Old World pitcher plants (Nepenthes spp., Nepenthaceae) trapand digest invertebrate prey to derive nutrients, primarilynitrogen (N). In the majority of lowland Nepenthes species studiedto date, ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) are numerically thedominant prey taxon. Short-range endemics are high-priority conservation targets, and valuable information for their management can be obtained from assessments of genetic diversity and structure, including potential hybridization with related species, and the investigation of factors shaping their patterns of occurrence. The Edough ribbed newt, Pleurodeles poireti, is restricted to the Edough Peninsula in Algeria, and listed as Endangered in IUCN’s Red List. Its range is completely surrounded by the more widespread, closely related, Algerian ribbed newt, Pleurodeles nebulosus. Here we examined patterns of genetic diversity and structure in P. poireti using mtDNA sequences of the ND4 gene and a suite of 12 polymorphic microsatellites in a sample of 193 individuals from 46 populations covering the whole range of P. poireti and neighboring populations of P. nebulosus. We also investigated the influence of environmental variables (climate, topography, soil texture and plant cover) on the patterns of occurrence of both species. Genetic data allow fine scale delineation of the ranges of the two species and provide evidence for hybridization in several localities in a broad area of overlap. Niche analyses indicate that P. nebulosus and P. poireti tend to occupy similar niches and that the hybrid zone is not associated to an ecotone. This suggests that the range boundaries of the two species may be constrained by reciprocal exclusion, although in the case of P. poireti there are additional environmental constraints. These distributional patterns could be explained by high occupation of habitats by P. poireti, hindering the penetration of P. nebulosus by a ‘density blocking’ effect.  相似文献

Ecological studies on seasonally dry tropical forest herpetofauna are scarce and those focused on interspecific relations of lizards in this endangered ecosystem are even fewer. This study evaluates general and seasonal patterns in time and habitat use among four lizard species (Anolis nebulosus, Sceloporus melanorhinus, S. utiformis, and Urosaurus bicarinatus) in a protected area of dry tropical forest in western Mexico. Data were gathered by visual surveys along 12 linear parallel transects located in an undisturbed habitat. Anolis nebulosus showed a bimodal pattern in daily activity whereas the other species exhibited unimodal patterns of activity. Seasonality only affected the general activity patterns of S. melanorhinus and U. bicarinatus. With the exception of A. nebulosus and S. melanorhinus, statistical differences were found for all pairwise comparisons of general and seasonal patterns of habitat use. The use of leaf‐litter and low perches in arboreal species was higher during the dry season, probably in response to higher food availability in these habitats. As expected, environmental seasonality affects both activity time and habitat use by lizards. Results suggest greater differences in habitat use than in time of activity among species. The data also indicate complementary use of time and space by these lizard species: species showing similar activity patterns exhibit greater differences in their habitat use. Predation could be an important factor affecting the use of habitat and time by the four lizard species.

Los estudios ecológicos de la herpetofauna de los bosques tropicales secos son escasos y aquellos enfocados a las relaciones ínterespecíficas en lagartijas de este ecosistema fuertemente amenazado son aún más raros. Este estudio evalúa el uso del tiempo y del hábitat de cuatro especies de lagartijas (Anolis nebulosus, Sceloporus melanorhinus, S. utiformis y, Urosaurus bicarinatus) en un área protegida en el occidente de México al comparar los patrones generales y estacionales. La información se obtuvo basándose en 12 transectos visuales ubicados en bosque intacto. Anolis nebulosus registró un patrón bimodal de actividad diaria mientras que en el resto fue unimodal, pero aparentemente, la estacionalidad solo afecto los patrones generales de S. melanorhinus y U. bicarinatus. A excepción de A. nebulosus y S. melanorhinus, todas las comparaciones intraespecificas de los patrones generales y estacionales del uso del hábitat mostraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas. El uso de la hojarasca y perchas mas bajas, en las especies arborícolas, fue mayor durante la época de sequía probablemente en respuesta a una mayor disponibilidad de alimento en esos hábitats durante ese tiempo. Como se esperaba, la estacionalidad puede afectar el uso del tiempo y hábitat en lagartijas. Los resultados sugieren la posibilidad de un mayor uso diferencial del hábitat que del tiempo y la ocurrencia de un uso complementario de ellos: las especies con patrones de actividad más similares difieren más en su uso del hábitat. La depredación puede tener un efecto importante en el uso del tiempo y hábitat de estas especies de lagartijas.  相似文献

Historical climatic refugia predict genetic diversity in lowland endemics of the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest. Yet, available data reveal distinct biological responses to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) conditions across species of different altitudinal ranges. We show that species occupying Brazil’s montane forests were significantly less affected by LGM conditions relative to lowland specialists, but that pre-Pleistocene tectonics greatly influenced their geographic variation. Our conclusions are based on palaeoclimatic distribution models, molecular sequences of the cytochrome b, 16S, and RAG-1 genes, and karyotype data for the endemic frog Proceratophrys boiei. DNA and chromosomal data identify in P. boiei at least two broadly divergent phylogroups, which have not been distinguished morphologically. Cytogenetic results also indicate an area of hybridization in southern São Paulo. The location of the phylogeographic break broadly matches the location of a NW–SE fault, which underwent reactivation in the Neogene and led to remarkable landscape changes in southeastern Brazil. Our results point to different mechanisms underpinning diversity patterns in lowland versus montane tropical taxa, and help us to understand the processes responsible for the large number of narrow endemics currently observed in montane areas of the southern Atlantic forest hotspot.  相似文献

We analyzed variations in chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) in the widespread herbaceous species Hosta sieboldiana and Hosta albomarginata across large portions of their geographic ranges in the Japanese archipelago. Our objective was to compare the phylogeographic histories and phylogeographic structures of the two congeneric species in the Japanese archipelago. The location of the study is Japanese archipelago. We sequenced 1380 bp of noncoding cpDNA from 45 populations of H. sieboldiana (= 362) and 55 populations of H. albomarginata (= 436) to assess genetic variations within and among populations across almost the entire distributions of the species in Japan. Extant patterns of geographic structure were analyzed using statistical parsimony networks and spatial analysis of molecular variance (SAMOVA). We also used Monmonier's algorithm to detect genetic barriers between regions. Relationships between the populations were examined using a neighbor‐joining (NJ) method. Four haplotypes were found for H. sieboldiana, whereas eight haplotypes were identified for H. albomarginata. Total genetic haplotype diversity (hT) and within‐population haplotype diversity (hS) for H. sieboldiana were 0.352 and 0.040, respectively, while the values for Halbomarginata were 0.529 and 0.085, respectively. The population differentiations (GST) for H. sieboldiana and Halbomarginata were 0.839 and 0.886, respectively. The SAMOVA analysis revealed two clusters in H. sieboldiana and four clusters in H. albomarginata. Differentiations between and among the clusters were supported by the BARRIER analysis and the NJ tree. We detected differences in the population genetic structure between the two species. We found that H. sieboldiana had lower haplotype diversity than H. albomarginata. These results may be partially explained by the difference in ecological habitats and geographic distributions between the species. Hosta albomarginata is more widely distributed than Hsieboldiana in East Asia including Russia, and this large distribution range would enable more chances to intraspecific gene flow.  相似文献

Analyses of the genetic population structure of spotted seatrout Cynoscion nebulosus along the south‐eastern U.S. coast using 13 microsatellites suggest significant population differentiation between fish in North Carolina (NC) compared with South Carolina (SC) and Georgia (GA), with New River, NC, serving as an area of integration between northern and southern C. nebulosus. Although there is a significant break in gene flow between these areas, the overall pattern throughout the sampling range represents a gradient in genetic diversification with the degree of geographic separation. Latitudinal distance and estuarine density appear to be main drivers in the genetic differentiation of C. nebulosus along the south‐eastern U.S. coast. The isolation‐by‐distance gene‐flow pattern creates fine‐scale differences in the genetic composition of proximal estuaries and dictates that stocking must be confined to within 100 km of the location of broodstock collection in order to maintain the natural gradient of genetic variation along the south‐eastern U.S. coast.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The power of genetic analysis possible with the fruitfly, Drosophila melanogaster, has yielded a detailed understandingof pattern formation controlled by homeotic and segmentationgenes in early embryogenesis. We are studying the genetic regulationof embryogenesis in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum.The dynamic process of germ rudiment formation and sequentialsegmentation exhibited by Tribolium provides a context differentthan Drosophila within which to assess the function of homeoticand segmentation gene homologs. Our analyses of the genes inthe HOM-C suggest many similarities in structure and functionwith the well-characterized Drosophila genes. Abdominal resemblesits Drosophila homolog abdominal-A in functioning to establishsegmental identities in the abdomen, such that in each casemutations result in homeotic transformations to PS6. Althoughthe anterior functional boundary of abdominal-A homologs isprecisely conserved, the domain within which Abdominal is importantextends more posterior than that of abdominal-A. The final expression pattern of the segmentation gene engrailedin Tribolium is identical to Drosophila, suggesting that thesehomologs are involved in a conserved developmental process.However, as expected the development of that pattern is different;engrailed stripes anticipate the formation of each new segmentas they appear sequentially in the elongating germ band. Althoughthe grasshopper even-skipped and fushi tarazu homologs are notapparently important in segmentation, the expression patternsof the Tribolium homologs strongly suggest that they have gaineda role in segmentation in the lineage leading to beetles andflies. Nevertheless, differences between Tribolium and Drosophilain the dynamics of even-skipped expression and the fushi tarazumutant phenotype indicate divergence in the regulation and rolesof these genes.  相似文献

The PSI-H subunit of photosystem I has two isoforms of differingmolecular mass in Nicotiana sylvestris [Obokata et al. (1993)Plant Physiol. 102: 1259], and is encoded by a nuclear gene,psaH. We identified three structurally distinct psaH genes inthe nuclear genome of N. sylvestris, designated psaHa, psaHb,and psaHc, and all three genes are expressed in young leaves.Each gene has two introns: one between sequences encoding atransit peptide and the N-terminal acidic domain, and one betweenthe N-terminal domain and a central hydrophobic domain. Thededuced amino acid sequences are identical in the mature proteinsand differ only in the transit peptides. The population genetic structure of the freshwater snail, Biomphalariaglabrata, was assessed in the municipality of Virgem das Graças(Minas Gerais, Brazil), a schistosomiasis-endemic area. Theseven microsatellite loci that were used to genotype 326 individualsfrom 17 collection sites within a 3-km radius revealed highgenetic variability. However, we found a deficit of heterozygotesrelative to Hardy–Weinberg expectations for most of theloci and in many collection sites, indicating a high level ofinbreeding. This may be the result of founder effects and sib-mating.A high level of overall population genetic differentiation amongB. glabrata collection sites suggested low gene flow at thisrelatively small spatial scale in this region. However, subsequentanalyses also indicated that these patterns may also resultfrom founder events and that an exchange of individuals betweenparticular collection sites does exist. The isolation-by-distancecorrelation between collection sites of B. glabrata was foundto be significant. However, only approximately 6% of the variancein FST was explained by geographic distances suggesting thatthere are other factors affecting genetic differentiation amongthese collection sites. It is likely that the current populationgenetic structure reflects patterns of both migration and founderevents. Results from this study are important for understandingthe potential for local adaptation between schistosomes andtheir snail hosts at this epidemiologically relevant scale.  相似文献

The partial-shoot theory of the leaf was a controversial hypothesisrevived by Arber and supported by her morphological and anatomicalstudies. This theory highlighted the parallels between leavesand shoots and contrasted with an alternative view that leaves,with their limited growth potential, are completely distinctfrom shoots. Pea morphological mutants with altered growth potentialin their compound leaves are described. The unifoliata mutanthas a limited growth potential relative to wild-type;cochleata,afila and insecatus have extended potentials. Characterizationof theunifoliata mutation and gene expression patterns indicatethat unifoliata is a common factor in pea compound leaf andfloral shoot development, and so provides rudimentary supportfor the idea that some leaves have shoot-like characteristics.Tomato leaves are also considered to lend tentative support.The afila and insecatus leaf forms are described as bipinnateand weakly bipinnate, respectively. These and the tendril-lessmutant are potential phenocopies of legume relatives, an ideabased on Vavilov's law of homologous series of variation. Arberillustrated, but did not articulate in genetical terms, thatmorphological variation in structures within an individual plantcan be interpreted as reiteration of design. The surface patterns of winged seeds of Paulownia fortunei,P. tomentosa and P. fortuneixP. tomentosa were examined by scanningelectron microscopy. The pattern of reticulation on the wingsand seed coat of P. fortunei and the hybrid are comparable,while that on P. tomentosa is different and more elongated.Also, the wings are more extended at the oblong ends of theseeds in the former when compared to the wings of P. tomentosa.Distinct random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) patterns wereobtained for the three taxa and P. kawakamii with five differentrandom oligonucleotide primers, suggesting that the method canyield genetic markers for differentiating the taxa. To help explain the apparent poor post‐release success of hatchery‐reared (HR) spotted seatrout Cynoscion nebulosus, this study examined the effects of handling, transport and release procedures on the stress response of two age classes [48 and 80 day post‐hatch (dph)] of HR C. nebulosus, as measured by cortisol concentrations and the post‐release survival and growth of 48 and 80 dph HR C. nebulosus. As a proxy for stress, tissue cortisol was measured at various times during the handling, tagging (80 dph), transport, acclimation and release process. To consider the implications of the pre‐release stressors, growth and survival were monitored in separate field experiments for each age class of acclimated post‐transport C. nebulosus using control C. nebulosus that only experienced anaesthesia, transport, acclimation and a net release v. experimental C. nebulosus that underwent the entire routine procedure, including anaesthesia, tagging, transport, acclimation and gravity release through a pipe. For 48 dph C. nebulosus, mean cortisol varied significantly throughout handling and transport, increasing more than six‐fold from controls before decreasing in mean concentration just prior to release. For 80 dph C. nebulosus, cortisol varied throughout handling, tagging and transport, first increasing more than three‐fold compared with control C. nebulosus, before decreasing and rising slightly just prior to release. For 48 dph C. nebulosus within field enclosures, survival was high and similar for control and experimental groups; experimental C. nebulosus, however, were shorter, lighter and lower in condition than control C. nebulosus. For 80 dph C. nebulosus within field enclosures, fewer experimental C. nebulosus survived and those that did survive were of lower condition than C. nebulosus from the control group. Small untagged C. nebulosus may survive the release procedure better than larger C. nebulosus carrying a coded‐wire tag. These findings document some ways in which pre‐release practices may translate into detrimental effects on post‐release success of HR C. nebulosus.  相似文献

Deduced amino acid sequences encoded by the cDNAs related tothe MIP gene family from Nicotiana excelsior were characterized.Phylogenetic characterization of the products of correspondinggenes named NeMip1, NeMip2, and NeMip3 strongly suggested thatthey are water channel proteins localized in the plasma membrane.Organ specificity of the gene expression was examined in leaves,roots, and reproductive organs. NeMip1 was expressed in rootsand reproductive organs; however, it was hardly detectable inleaves. Two other genes, NeMip2 and NeMip3, were expressed inall of organs examined. mRNA accumulation from the genes wasinvestigated in leaves under salt- and drought-stresses. Theresults demonstrated that mRNA accumulation from all three genesincreased under salt- and drought-stresses within one day. However,they showed different accumulation patterns. In addition totheir up-reg-ulation under salt- and drought-stresses, dailychanges in NeMip2 and NeMip3 mRNA accumulation was observedunder unstressed conditions in leaves. 全世界记录的长小蠹(鞘翅目:长小蠹科)有1 500余种,其分类地位一直存在争议。本研究通过分子基因信息探讨长小蠹科昆虫的分子系统进化关系,测定了中对长小蠹Euplatypus parallelus(Fabricius)、希氏长小蠹E. hintzi Schaufuss、散对长小蠹E. solutus Schedl、杯长小蠹Dinoplatypus cupulatus Chapuis、小杯长小蠹D. cupulatulus Schedl、芦苇黄截尾长小蠹D. calamus Blandford、五棘长小蠹Diapus quinquespinatus Chapuis、锥长小蠹Treptoplatypus solidus Walk、栎长小蠹Platypus quercivorus Murayama和东亚长小蠹P. lewisi Blandford等长小蠹科5属10种mtDNA COⅠ基因部分序列(549 bp);采用MEGA3.1分析了序列组成及遗传距离,应用PAUP4.0分别构建了长小蠹NJ,MP和ML等3种分子系统树,同时结合长小蠹的形态分类,探讨10 种长小蠹及其所在属的系统进化。结果表明:长小蠹科昆虫在碱基使用频率上有很大的偏向性;长小蠹科与外群小蠹科松瘤小蠹Orthotomicus erosus Wollaston之间的遗传距离(0.288~0.338)远大于科内种间距离(0~0.226);Diapus属分化最早,Euplatypus属独成一支,Treptohlatypus, Dinoplatypus和Platypus 3属分化为一支。长小蠹科分子系统进化研究结果与Wood(1993)新修订的分类系统基本一致,说明长小蠹科的分类系统更趋于合理。  相似文献

本文目的是通过对小萤叶甲属部分种类的线粒体COⅠ基因进行比较,探讨小萤叶甲属昆虫进化与寄主植物之间的关系,同时对几种分类地位模糊的昆虫进行分析和归类。测定了我国菱角萤叶甲Galerucella birmanica Jacoby和褐背小萤叶甲Galerucella grisescens Joannis以及小猿叶甲Phaedon brassicae Baly线粒体COⅠ基因720 bp序列,并调用GenBank中小萤叶甲属等其他8种昆虫的同源序列,对序列的碱基组成、转换颠换、遗传距离等进行了分析。并以小猿叶甲为外群,分别采用邻接法(NJ)、最大简约法(MP)和贝叶斯推论法(BI)建立这些种的分子系统发育关系。序列分析结果表明:小萤叶甲属昆虫COⅠ基因A+T含量平均为71.8%,存在较强的A+T含量偏向性,氨基酸的变异率为18.3%; 小萤叶甲属与外群之间的遗传距离(0.169~0.198)远远大于属内种间的距离(0.001~0.134)。依据分子系统树结果我们推测小萤叶甲属昆虫的进化与寄主植物之间有着显著的关系,在传统分类学上曾隶属于其他属的几种昆虫与小萤叶甲昆虫有着更近的亲缘关系。  相似文献

The composition of the skin microbiota of amphibians is related to the biology of host species and environmental microbial communities. In this system, the environment serves as a microbial source and can modulate the hosted community. When habitats are fragmented and the environment disturbed, changes in the structure of this microbial community are expected. One important potential consequence of fragmentation is a compromised protective function of the microbiota against pathogenic microorganisms. In this study, the skin microbiota of the amphibian Proceratophrys boiei was characterized, evaluated for relationships with environmental variables and environmental sources of microbial communities, and its diversity evaluated for frog populations from fragmented and continuous forests. In addition, the antimicrobial activity of this skin community was studied in frogs from both forest types. Culture methods and 16S rRNA high‐throughput gene sequencing were used to characterize the microbial community and demonstrated that the skin microbiota of P. boiei is more closely related to the soil microbial communities than those inhabiting water bodies or fragment matrix, the unforested area around the forested fragment. The microbial diversity and abundance of Pboiei skin microbiota are different between continuous forests and fragments. This community is correlated with environmental variables, especially with temperature of microhabitat and distance to human dwelling. All individuals of P. boiei harbored bacteria capable of inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria and different strains of the pathogenic fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, and a total of 27 bacterial genera were detected. The results of this study indicate that the persistence of populations of this species will need balanced and sustained interactions among host, microorganisms, and environment.  相似文献

Reproductive isolation was studied in four syntopic speciesof Petunia sensu Jussieu (Solanaceae) at a site in Rio Grandedo Sul State, Brazil. Reciprocal artificial crossing experimentsconfirmed that a genetic barrier exists between Petunia(P. axillarisand P. integrifolia) andCalibrachoa (C. parviflora and C. heterophylla),and also between C. parviflora andC. heterophylla . Petuniaaxillaris(white, nocturnally scented flower) is geneticallycompatible with the syntopic and allotopic P. integrifolia(coloured,unscented flower). Reproductive isolation appears to be maintainedby the two species having different pollinators: nocturnallyactive hawkmoths (Manduca contracta andM. diffissa subsp. petuniae)pollinate P. axillaris while a diurnally active bee (Hexanthedasp.) pollinates P. integrifolia. Flowers of P. integrifoliaexhibit diurnal opening and closing movements synchronous withthe activity period of the bee. Other than a probable nectarrobber (a carpenter bee, Xylocopa augusti), no insect visitedflowers of P. axillaris in the day. Amounts of floral nectarin P. axillaris and P. integrifolia were within the range ofhawkmoth- and bee-pollinated flowers, respectively. 以11种限制性内切酶对新疆荒漠中的9种束颈蝗和与其近缘的细距蝗Leptopternis gracilis,旋跳蝗Helioscirtus moseri moseri 及远缘的意大利蝗Calliptamus italicus italicus,红翅瘤蝗Dericorys roseipennis的线粒体DNA进行了长度片段多态性的研究。根据所得的酶切类型,计算了种间每核苷酸位点的平均碱基取代值P(遗传距离)。用UPGMA法构建分子系统树。结果表明,束颈蝗属种间的P值约为 0.099~0.146,与近缘种属间约0.100~0.205,与远缘种属间约为0.113~0.206。估算出束颈蝗属种间的分歧年代约在1000~1500万年前,处于中新世中期,将实验结果与形态演化比较分析,探讨束颈蝗的系统进化。  相似文献

Phlomisxmargaritae is a rare and sterile hybrid taxon foundin a single endangered population in southern Spain. It waspreviously described as a morphologically intermediate hybrid,putatively between Phlomis purpurea and P. composita. The presentstudy used allozymes as molecular markers to assess the hybrididentity ofP.xmargaritae . Ten putative loci from seven enzymesystems were resolved: five were monomorphic and fixed acrossall taxa studied and the rest (Aat-1, Aat-2, 6-Pgdh-2, Pgi andPgm) were polymorphic in at least one taxon. The two parentaltaxa are fixed for different alleles at 6-Pgdh-2 and show distinctallelic frequency differences for four other loci. Phlomisxmargaritaedisplays fixed heterozygous phenotypes for four of the fivepolymorphic loci, these being composed of combinations of thealleles found in the parental taxa. No unique alleles were detectedin P.xmargaritae. We conclude that this taxon is of hybrid originand confirm the identity of the parental taxa involved. It isfurther suggested that this population is composed of individualsthat are recent F1hybrids that have not undergone backcrossingor introgression.
