This paper deals with the history and investigations of the reefs and coral communities of the Gulf of Thailand based on published and unpublished materials, including the author's. The state of the art in the study of reef-building scleractinian corals and reefs of this region is presented. Characterized by remarkable distinctive features, the coral fauna and reefs of the Gulf of Thailand exhibit high similarity in coral species composition to other regions of Vietnam and form a single complex of species of the equatorial Indo-Pacific.

A nonstructural reef at Hon Nai Island in Cam Ranh Bay (southern Vietnam) was investigated. In comparison with most of the coastal continental and island coral reefs of this region, it is characterized by high species richness of reef-building corals, among them scleractinians. A total of 34 species of Acropora were found, which represent 80% of the total species composition of this scleractinian genus on the reefs of Vietnam and 25% on the reefs of the Indo-Pacific. Among 169 species of scleractinians found on the reef of Hon Nai, Favia sp. nov. was previously unknown to science. The vertical bionomic zonality of the reef corresponds to a zonal distribution of environmental factors and is similar to that on reefs of the Gulf of Siam and various areas of the Pacific and the Caribbean Basin. The thriving of the Hon Nai island reef may be connected with protective measures undertaken by the Government of Vietnam and the minimization of anthropogenic impacts due to the activities of the Sanest Co.

New data on the species composition and distribution of reef-building corals on some reefs of the Seychelles Islands are presented. The study revealed 236 species belonging to 68 genera, which exceeds the well-known values of scleractinian species composition in this region by almost two times. Representatives of the families Acroporidae, Poritidae, and Faviidae dominated. Settlements of the blue coral Heliopora coerulea and the hydroid Millepora dichotoma were fairly numerous and in aggregate covered up to 40% of the substratum. In its species composition, the coral fauna of the Seychelles reefs makes a single unit with the Indo-Pacific tropical fauna.

This paper deals with the history and results of the studies of reefs and coral communities of the Gulf of Tonkin based on published and unpublished materials, including the author's. The state of the art in the study of reef-building scleractinian corals and reefs of this region is reported. The peculiar nature of the reefs studied is caused by the monsoon climate in the region and river runoff waters cooled to 16–18°C, silted to 100 g/m2 per day, and freshened to 28‰ in the wintertime, i.e., conditions far from optimum for reef formation. The silting and eutrophication of the gulf waters resulted in a change in the composition and structure of the coral reef communities via the reduction or elimination of certain coral species. Instead of acroporids, typical for the majority of other reefs, reef communities of the Gulf of Tonkin are dominated by poritids and faviids, which form the framework of the reefs. These peculiarities make the reefs of the Gulf of Tonkin really unique.

Thirty-nine species of unattached scleractinian corals that belong to 22 genera of 9 families were found on the Seychelles reefs. Variations of the colony form of corals living on soft sediments under continuous wave action are described. Irrespective of their initial growth form and taxonomic position, corals assume a form close to spherical. Because of the worldwide deterioration of coral reefs, the adaptation to changing ecological conditions by reef-building corals needs to be studied.

Climate change scenarios suggest an increase in tropical ocean temperature by 1–3°C by 2099, potentially killing many coral reefs. But Arabian/Persian Gulf corals already exist in this future thermal environment predicted for most tropical reefs and survived severe bleaching in 2010, one of the hottest years on record. Exposure to 33–35°C was on average twice as long as in non-bleaching years. Gulf corals bleached after exposure to temperatures above 34°C for a total of 8 weeks of which 3 weeks were above 35°C. This is more heat than any other corals can survive, providing an insight into the present limits of holobiont adaptation. We show that average temperatures as well as heat-waves in the Gulf have been increasing, that coral population levels will fluctuate strongly, and reef-building capability will be compromised. This, in combination with ocean acidification and significant local threats posed by rampant coastal development puts even these most heat-adapted corals at risk. WWF considers the Gulf ecoregion as “critically endangered”. We argue here that Gulf corals should be considered for assisted migration to the tropical Indo-Pacific. This would have the double benefit of avoiding local extinction of the world''s most heat-adapted holobionts while at the same time introducing their genetic information to populations naïve to such extremes, potentially assisting their survival. Thus, the heat-adaptation acquired by Gulf corals over 6 k, could benefit tropical Indo-Pacific corals who have <100 y until they will experience a similarly harsh climate. Population models suggest that the heat-adapted corals could become dominant on tropical reefs within ∼20 years.

In October 2003 and January 2005, comparative observations were made on the reefs of Mju and Moon islands near the city and port of Nha Trang, which we first investigated in 1981. Appreciable changes due to anthropogenic impact have occurred on the reefs that are the nearest to the city. There was a reduction in substrate cover by reef-building corals, a substitution of dominant scleractinian species, and a decrease in the numbers and diversity of common species of corallobionts. The index of species diversity for scleractinians also decreased. The seaweeds Chnoospora and Halimeda spread into all zones of the reefs. Changes in coral communities on more distant and protected reefs were not so marked.

Acropora is the most diverse genus of reef-building corals in the world today. It occurs in all three major oceans; it is restricted to latitudes 31 degrees N-31 degrees S, where most coral reefs occur, and reaches greatest diversity in the central Indo-Pacific. As an exemplar genus, the long-term history of Acropora has implications for the evolution and origins of present day biodiversity patterns of reef corals and for predicting their response to future climate change. Diversification of Acropora was thought to have occurred in the central Indo-Pacific within the previous two million years. We examined Eocene fossils from southern England and northern France and found evidence that precursors of up to nine of 20 currently recognized Acropora species groups existed 49-34 Myr, at palaeolatitudes far higher than current limits, to 51 degrees N. We propose that pre-existing diversity contributed to later rapid speciation in this important functional group of corals.

Conservation genetics and the resilience of reef-building corals
Coral reefs have suffered long-term decline due to a range of anthropogenic disturbances and are now also under threat from climate change. For appropriate management of these vulnerable and valuable ecosystems it is important to understand the factors and processes that determine their resilience and that of the organisms inhabiting them, as well as those that have led to existing patterns of coral reef biodiversity. The scleractinian (stony) corals deposit the structural framework that supports and promotes the maintenance of biological diversity and complexity of coral reefs, and as such, are major components of these ecosystems. The success of reef-building corals is related to their obligate symbiotic association with dinoflagellates of the genus Symbiodinium. These one-celled algal symbionts (zooxanthellae) live in the endodermal tissues of their coral host, provide most of the host's energy budget and promote rapid calcification. Furthermore, zooxanthellae are the main primary producers on coral reefs due to the oligotrophic nature of the surrounding waters. In this review paper, we summarize and critically evaluate studies that have employed genetics and/or molecular biology in examining questions relating to the evolution and ecology of reef-building corals and their algal endosymbionts, and that bear relevance to coral reef conservation. We discuss how these studies can focus future efforts, and examine how these approaches enhance our understanding of the resilience of reef-building corals.

Hybridisation between coral species clearly occurs in vitro, but the evolutionary significance of this cross-fertility is still the subject of much debate. Compelling genetic and reproductive evidence support introgressive hybridization amongst Indo-Pacific members of the scleractinian genus Acropora. Although population genetic analyses indicate that interspecific hybridization events are relatively rare, they are likely be important on evolutionary time scales, creating the capacity for adaptive evolution by increasing genomic diversity and heterozygosity. However, in a recent paper based exclusively on the three endemic Caribbean Acropora species, Vollmer and Palumbi (2002) dispute the occurrence of reticulation in corals. Here we use data from both the Vollmer and Palumbi study and our earlier paper on the same species (van Oppen et al., 2000) to show that reticulation has occurred amongst the Caribbean Acropora species. Furthermore, conclusions based on the limited Caribbean Acropora fauna cannot simply be extrapolated to Indo-Pacific corals, and it is inappropriate to view some coral species as 'immortal mules'.

The Late Paleocene Salt Mountain Limestone from southwestern Alabama is a coral-algal-sponge buildup which further characterizes the faunal makeup of early post-Cretaceous reefs. Thin sectioning has disclosed a variety of lithologies, including large foram-algal packstone, algal bindstone, and sponge bafflestone. A low-diversity fauna of massive scleractinian corals caps the sequence, but may be developed intermittently throughout the section as well. The constructional importance of coralline algae and the low diversity of scleractinian corals are characteristic of Paleocene reefs in general. Sponges, however, are virtually unknown in earliest Tertiary sediments. Their abundance in the Salt Mountain demonstrates not only their local contribution to Early Tertiary reefs, but may also reflect an opportunistic response of sponges as reef constructors following the extinction of oligotrophic, rudist-coral reef communities of the Late Cretaceous. □ Paleocene, reef, paleoecology, sponges, extinction.

The distribution of 64 reef-building scleractinian species was studied in turbid waters of the South China Sea. The depth limit of scleractinian distribution in the Gulf of Siam is 18–20 m with 8–2% of incident surface irradiance, which is close to the lower light limit of most corals containing zooxanthellae. Forty percent of the scleractinian species studied inhabit the entire depth range with 70–30% of incident surface irradiance. No specific grotto species were identified even in sites of extreme shading, though only explanate plate, corymbose and encrusting colonies were found in low light levels.

Discovering how corals can adjust their thermal sensitivity in the context of global climate change is important in understanding the long-term persistence of coral reefs. In this study, we showed that short-term preconditioning to higher temperatures, 3°C below the experimentally determined bleaching threshold, for a period of 10 days provides thermal tolerance for the symbiosis stability between the scleractinian coral, Acropora millepora and Symbiodinium. Based on genotypic analysis, our results indicate that the acclimatization of this coral species to thermal stress does not come down to simple changes in Symbiodinium and/or the bacterial communities that associate with reef-building corals. This suggests that the physiological plasticity of the host and/or symbiotic components appears to play an important role in responding to ocean warming. The further study of host and symbiont physiology, both of Symbiodinium and prokaryotes, is of paramount importance in the context of global climate change, as mechanisms for rapid holobiont acclimatization will become increasingly important to the long-standing persistence of coral reefs.

The Biology and Economics of Coral Growth
To protect natural coral reefs, it is of utmost importance to understand how the growth of the main reef-building organisms—the zooxanthellate scleractinian corals—is controlled. Understanding coral growth is also relevant for coral aquaculture, which is a rapidly developing business. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of factors that can influence the growth of zooxanthellate scleractinian corals, with particular emphasis on interactions between these factors. Furthermore, the kinetic principles underlying coral growth are discussed. The reviewed information is put into an economic perspective by making an estimation of the costs of coral aquaculture.

The term hermatypic, as widely used in the literature of extant and fossil Scleractinia, includes, by definition (Wells 1933), the confusing generalization of equating reef-building with containing zooxanthellae. In course of time the use of the term diverged into denoting organisms which are either reef-building (including calcareous Rhodophyta) or those that contain zooxanthellae (including soft Alcyonaria). The equation: reef-building corals harbour zooxanthellae and vice-versa, is invalidated by reviewing the various ecological categories of corals such as: reef-building species without the support of zooxanthellae, zooxanthellae-containing corals which inhabit but do not build reefs, zooxanthellae-containing, non-reef-building corals beyond the bathymetric and latitudinal limits of reefs, and framework-erecting corals in deep waters without zooxanthellae. Former attempts to improve the original definition of hermatypic are shown to be insufficient to match the ecological diversity of corals. A strict terminological separation of the properties zooxanthellae-containing, reef-building and (more generally) framework-building is provided by the use of the revised, respectively new terms zooxanthellate, hermatypic and constructional (with the respective antonyms azooxanthellate, ahermatypic and nonconstructional). This terminology also applies to non-scleractinians.

The South China Sea in the Central Indo-Pacific is a large semi-enclosed marine region that supports an extraordinary diversity of coral reef organisms (including stony corals), which varies spatially across the region. While one-third of the world’s reef corals are known to face heightened extinction risk from global climate and local impacts, prospects for the coral fauna in the South China Sea region amidst these threats remain poorly understood. In this study, we analyse coral species richness, rarity, and phylogenetic diversity among 16 reef areas in the region to estimate changes in species and evolutionary diversity during projected anthropogenic extinctions. Our results show that richness, rarity, and phylogenetic diversity differ considerably among reef areas in the region, and that their outcomes following projected extinctions cannot be predicted by species diversity alone. Although relative rarity and threat levels are high in species-rich areas such as West Malaysia and the Philippines, areas with fewer species such as northern Vietnam and Paracel Islands stand to lose disproportionately large amounts of phylogenetic diversity. Our study quantifies various biodiversity components of each reef area to inform conservation planners and better direct sparse resources to areas where they are needed most. It also provides a critical biological foundation for targeting reefs that should be included in a regional network of marine protected areas in the South China Sea.

All species of the scleractinian coral genus Acropora presently known to occur in south-east Africa (denoting the African coast south of the Tropic of Capricorn, and including the atoll Bassas da India in the Mozambique channel) are reviewed. Twenty-three species are discussed, most of which are of wide Indo-Pacific distribution. Field and laboratory characteristics of all species are described in detail. Species richness in southern Mozambique is much higher (23 species) than in South Africa (14 species), probably due to the higher ecological differentiation of Mozambiquan reefs. The Acropora fauna of the atoll Bassas da India is similar to that of Mozambique but with two additional species A. paniculata and A. cf. striata. Compared to other coral reef areas in similar latitudes, the south-east African Acropora fauna is of average diversity. An identification key to all species is provided.

A platform reef at Bach Long Vi Island (Gulf of Tonkin in the South China Sea) was investigated for the first time. In all, 264 species of corals and their accompanying species of macrobenthos were found. Among the scleractinian corals, acroporids, poritids, and mussids dominated. Monospecific aggregations of alcyonarians Sinularia and Lobophytum and the hydroid Millepora were rather numerous. Based on its geomorphological characteristics, coral species diversity and zonal distribution, the investigated reef is comparable with ribbon and platform reefs on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and in the Indian Ocean.
