Variation in respiratory traits was quantified between two populations of the sailfin molly Poecilia latipinna (one from a periodically hypoxic salt marsh, Cedar Key, and one from a chronically normoxic river site, Santa Fe River). Two suites of characters were selected: traits that may show both short‐term acclimation response and interdemic variation in acclimation response (metabolic rate, critical oxygen tension and respiratory behaviour), and those that are not likely to respond to short‐term acclimation but may vary among populations (gill morphometric characters). Sailfin mollies from the salt marsh, acclimated to hypoxia (1 mg l−1, c . 20 mmHg) for 6 weeks, spent less time conducting aquatic surface respiration and had lower gill ventilation rates than hypoxia‐acclimated conspecifics from the well‐oxygenated river site. Poecilia latipinna acclimated to hypoxia exhibited a lower critical oxygen tension ( P c) than fish acclimated to normoxia; however, there was also a significant population effect. Poecilia latipinna from Cedar Key exhibited a lower P c than fish from the Santa Fe River, regardless of acclimation. Cedar Key fish had a 14% higher mean gill surface area relative to fish from the Santa Fe River, a character that could account, at least in part, for their greater tolerance to hypoxia.

This study quantifies the behavioral response of the widespread mouth brooding African cichlid Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor victoriae to progressive hypoxia. We exposed four gender/stage classes of P. multicolor (males, brooding females, females that had just released young, and non-brooding females) to progressive hypoxia and recorded the percent time spent using aquatic surface respiration (surface skimming, ASR) and gill ventilation rates. This was done for fish collected from three sites in Uganda (lake, swamp, and river) after long-term acclimation to normoxia. There was no effect of site of origin on response to hypoxia, but ASR thresholds did differ between gender/stage classes. The oxygen level (threshold) at which spent 10, 50, and 90% of their time at the surface using ASR was much higher for brooding females than for males, whereas ASR thresholds did not differ between non-brooding females and males. Similarly, the level at which ASR was initiated was much higher in brooding females than males, but did not differ between males and non-brooders, or between males and females than had just released young. The rate of gill ventilation dropped significantly in males and all stages of females after initiation of ASR, suggesting that surface skimming increases efficiency of oxygen acquisition. These results suggest that mouth brooding in female P. multicolor ASR improves oxygen uptake but imposes a cost in terms of time spent at the water surface, and this may affect maternal predation risk in low-oxygen habitats.

Effect of seasonal and experimental acclimation to temperature upon aquatic oxygen consumption of the sea anemone Actinia equina L. has been studied in animals from two shore levels during the summer of 1981 and the winter of 1982. A clear influence of both season and shore level on the weight exponent is registered, higher values occurring during the summer. Seasonally acclimated animals from the upper shore showed perfect winter-summer compensation with lateral translation to the right of the R-T curve in response to warm acclimation while this pattern was coupled with clockwise rotation and partial compensation in specimens collected from the low shore. Experimental acclimation during the summer resulted in partial compensation at Ta 15°C and no acclimation was found at Ta 25°C; during the winter, only high shore specimens exhibited compensatory responses. A significant increase in oxygen consumption, regardless of shore level, occurs in winter in both seasonally and experimentally acclimated animals.

We tested the hypothesis that the physiological strategy for acclimating to low body temperature is similar among closely related fish. Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus), bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus), black crappie (Pomonix nigromaculatus), and white crappie (Pomonix annularis), all members of the family Centrarchidae, were acclimated to 5 degrees and 25 degrees C. Morphometric variables (total mass, total length, organ masses) and enzyme activities (hexokinase; lactate dehydrogenase; and cytochrome oxidase in heart, liver, and muscle) were measured in 5 degrees C- and 25 degrees C-acclimated fish at 5 degrees and 25 degrees C assay temperatures. Each species displayed a distinct physiological response to cold acclimation that differed among tissues. These data suggest that the response to cold acclimation is highly variable within families. Our findings are consistent with other studies suggesting that acclimation responses are labile and may evolve independently even among closely related species.

The effects of temperature acclimation and acute temperature change were investigated in postprandial green shore crabs, Carcinus maenas. Oxygen uptake, gut contractions and transit rates and digestive efficiencies were measured for crabs acclimated to either 10 °C or 20 °C and subsequently exposed to treatment temperatures of 5, 15, or 25 °C. Temperature acclimation resulted in a partial metabolic compensation in unfed crabs, with higher oxygen uptake rates measured for the 10 °C acclimated group exposed to acute test temperatures. The Q10 values were higher than normal, probably because the acute temperature change prevented crabs from fully adjusting to the new temperature. Both the acclimation and treatment temperature altered the characteristics of the specific dynamic action (SDA). The duration of the response was longer for 20 °C acclimated crabs and was inversely related to the treatment temperature. The scope (peak oxygen consumption) was also higher for 20 °C acclimated crabs with a trend towards an inverse relationship with treatment temperature. Since the overall SDA (energy expenditure) is a function of both duration and scope, it was also higher for 20 °C acclimated crabs, with the highest value measured at the treatment temperature of 15 °C. The decline in total SDA after acute exposure to 5 and 25 °C suggests that both cold stress and limitations to oxygen supply at the temperature extremes could be affecting the SDA response. The contractions of the pyloric sac of the foregut region function to propel digesta through the gut, and contraction rates increased with increasing treatment temperature. This translated into faster transit rates with increasing treatment temperatures. Although pyloric sac contractions were higher for 20 °C acclimated crabs, temperature acclimation had no effect on transit rates. This suggests that a threshold level in pyloric sac contraction rates needs to be reached before it manifests itself on transit rates. Although there was a correlation between faster transit times and the shorter duration of the SDA response with increasing treatment temperature, transit rates do not make a good proxy for calculating the SDA characteristics. The digestive efficiency showed a trend towards a decreasing efficiency with increasing treatment temperature; the slower transit rates at the lower treatment temperatures allowing for more efficient nutrient absorption. Even though metabolic rates of 10 °C acclimated crabs were higher, there was no effect of acclimation temperature on digestive efficiency. This probably occurred because intracellular enzymes and digestive enzymes are modulated through different control pathways. These results give an insight into the metabolic and digestive physiology of Carcinus maenas as it makes feeding excursions between the subtidal and intertidal zones.

Cats exposed to novel environments initiate stress responses by behavioral and physiological changes that modify metabolism and lead to the collection of unreliable data. Fourteen cats (10 ± 2 months) were subjected to an 11-week acclimation procedure to adapt to restriction within chambers used for indirect calorimetry studies. Cats were acclimated to chambers in their home environments, to chambers in the study room, and to increasing periods of restriction within chambers. Ten additional cats (11 ± 1 month), used as controls, were subjected to a single 5-hr restriction without any prior exposure. Stress level, feed intake, fearfulness, and eliminations were recorded. Latencies to approach a novel object peaked on Weeks 4 and 8 (p < .05). Cat-Stress-Scores (CSS) declined with exposure and on Week 11, stress levels were low and consistent (p < .05). CSS was greater in unacclimated versus acclimated cats (p < .05). In conclusion, acclimation protocols prepare cats for repeated, temporary restriction within chambers, whereas short acclimations do not. A step-up acclimation procedure with behavioral indices of stress should be utilized to prepare cats for research that necessitates restriction.

Male sailfin mollies Poecilia latipinna were tested in five different treatments that varied in the relative frequency of heterospecific gynogens (Amazon molly Poecilia formosa) to conspecific females to determine whether social interactions among males within a population causes some males to mate with heterospecific females. Male P. latipinna inseminated a significantly higher proportion of conspecific females and fertilized a significantly higher number of conspecific eggs regardless of the treatment. Nonetheless, preference for conspecific females was not exclusive as a range of 20 to 50% of heterospecific females were fertilized. Social interactions among males may best explain the results and may therefore play an important role in the maintenance of unisexual--bisexual mating complexes.

(The energetic cost of transport, COT)影响显著(P<0.05)。

The stress of water-borne hormone collection process was examined in sailfin mollies Poecilia latipinna. Baseline release rates of the stress hormone cortisol were measured and minimum confinement time for water sampling was evaluated for a standard 60 min v. a 30 min protocol. A 30 min hormone collection period reflects release rates over 60 min. Potential stress response to confinement in the beaker for the water-borne collection process was tested over 4 days. There was no evidence of stress due to the collection methods, as cortisol release rates did not differ significantly across four sequential days of handling for P. latipinna. Males and females did not differ significantly in baseline cortisol release rates. Baseline cortisol release rates from fish immediately after being collected in the field were also not significantly different than those in the 4 day confinement experiment. After exposure to a novel environment, however, P. latipinna mounted a stress response. Stress may also affect sex steroids and behaviour but cortisol release rates were not significantly correlated with sex steroids [11-ketotestosterone (KT), testosterone, or oestradiol], or mating attempts. The correlation between water-borne release rates and plasma steroid levels was validated for both cortisol and KT. Finally, normalizing cortisol release rates using standard length in lieu of mass is viable and accurate. Water-borne hormone assays are a valuable tool for investigating questions concerning the role of hormones in mediating stress responses and reproductive behaviours in P. latipinna and other livebearing fishes.

Temperature acclimation may be a critical component of the locomotor physiology and ecology of ectothermic animals, particularly those living in eurythermal environments. Several studies of fish report striking acclimation of biochemical and kinetic properties in isolated muscle. However, the relatively few studies of whole-animal performance report variable acclimation responses. We test the hypothesis that different types of whole-animal locomotion will respond differently to temperature acclimation, probably due to divergent physiological bases of locomotion. We studied two cyprinid fishes, tinfoil barbs (Puntius schwanenfeldii) and river barbels (Barbus barbus). Study fish were acclimated to either cold or warm temperatures for at least 6 wk and then assayed at four test temperatures for three types of swimming performance. We measured voluntary swimming velocity to estimate routine locomotor behavior, maximum fast start velocity to estimate anaerobic capacity, and critical swimming velocity to estimate primarily aerobic capacity. All three performance measures showed some acute thermal dependence, generally a positive correlation between swimming speed and test temperature. However, each performance measure responded quite differently to acclimation. Critical speeds acclimated strongly, maximum speeds not at all, and voluntary speeds uniquely in each species. Thus we conclude that long-term temperature exposure can have very different consequences for different types of locomotion, consistent with our hypothesis. The data also address previous hypotheses that predict that polyploid and eurythermal fish will have greater acclimation abilities than other fish, due to increased genetic flexibility and ecological selection, respectively. Our results conflict with these predictions. River barbels are eurythermal polyploids and tinfoil barbs stenothermal diploids, yet voluntary swimming acclimated strongly in tinfoil barbs and minimally in river barbels, and acclimation was otherwise comparable.

Effects of prior hypoxia acclimation (14-day at 380 mm Hg) on soman (pinacolyl methylphosphonofluoridate) induced brain neuronal RNA and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) depletion and lethality were monitored in rats following their return to ambient oxygenation. Quantitative cytochemical techniques were used to measure RNA and AChE changes in individual cerebrocortical (Layer III) and striatal (caudate plus putamen) neurons. In ambient PO 2 controls, soman eventuated in a moderate diminution of neuronal RNA in both brain regions and severe, dosedependent suppression of AChE activity. Hypoxia acclimation per se induced RNA alterations as manifested in cortical RNA depletion and increased variability of striatal neuron RNA contents. In hypoxia acclimated rats, the extent of neuronal RNA depletion following soman injection was attenuated in both brain regions, yet there were no discernible differences in saline control AChE levels or in the extent of soman-induced AChE inhibition in ambient control versus hypoxia acclimated treatment groups. Hypoxia acclimated rats, however, were found to be even more susceptible to lethal actions of soman as assessed using 24- and 48-hour survival following a three-point treatment regimen. These data indicate that while compensatory systemic and central metabolic adjustments associated with 14d acclimation to reduced oxygen availability may retard soman-induced neuronal RNA depletion, resistance to lethal or near-lethal soman exposure is not enhanced. It is postulated that hypoxia acclimation is associated with complex adaptive and maladaptive neurophysiological alterations influencing CNS responsiveness to soman toxication, and that detrimental consequences exceed protection afforded by metabolic adaptation.

The extensive papyrus (Cyperus papyrus) swamps of East and Central Africa form a habitat of great ecological importance due to their extent, the extreme and chronic hypoxia of the interior swamp, and the unique assemblages of water-breathing insects that characterize these communities, including zygopteran (damselfly) larvae. The major goal of this study was to quantify physiological and behavioral responses of gilled and gill-less damselfly larvae of a papyrus swamp specialist, Proischnura subfurcatum, to low-oxygen conditions. Gill autotomization was common in P. subfurcatum of the Rwembaita Swamp in Kibale National Park, Uganda, with one to three gills missing from 56% of the specimens surveyed. We examined behavioral (ventilation activity and vertical migration) and physiological (metabolic rate) response to hypoxia in gilled and gill-less P. subfurcatum. Behavioral response to progressive hypoxia indicated that gill-less individuals rely more on use of wing sheaths (lifting and spreading) than gilled P. subfurcatum larvae. However, both morphs migrated to the surface to gain contact with atmospheric air under extreme hypoxia. On average, the rate of oxygen consumption of gill-less individuals was 51% lower than that of gilled individuals. This observed metabolic depression in gill-less P. subfurcatum may be attributed to the loss of major respiratory appendages. However, the apparent ability of both gilled and gill-less individuals to maintain their metabolic rates to a similar critical tension suggests other mechanisms may compensate for loss of gills, though not enough to mediate metabolic depression.

Female Amazon mollies, Poecilia formosa, are a unisexual species that reproduce by gynogenesis. They must coexist and mate with males of other species (usually the mollies Poecilia latipinna or Poecilia mexicana) to induce embryogenesis, but inheritance is strictly maternal. We examined the mating preference of the male sailfin molly, P. latipinna, for female sailfin mollies versus Amazon mollies, P. formosa. We compared the mating preferences of sympatric and allopatric populations collected throughout the Gulf Coast of North America. Male P. latipinna from six populations sympatric with Amazon mollies showed a significantly greater strength of preference for conspecific sailfin females than males from five populations that were allopatric with Amazon mollies. These results provide strong evidence for reproductive character displacement of male mate choice in sympatry. Furthermore, the large geographical range of populations that we tested revealed variation among populations within sympatry and allopatry, indicating that it is important to evaluate a large number of populations when examining reproductive character displacement.

The effects of temperature acclimation, acute temperature variation and progressive hypoxia on oxygen consumption rates (VO2) were determined for the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha. In the first experiment, after acclimation to 5, 15 or 25 degrees C for at least 2 weeks, VO2 was determined at 5 degrees C increments from 5 to 45 degrees C. VO2 increased in all three acclimation groups from 5 to 30 degrees C, corresponding to the normal ambient temperature range for this species. Mussels displayed imperfect temperature compensation at temperatures above 15 degrees C, but exhibited little acclimatory ability below 15 degrees C. In the hypoxia experiment, VO2 was determined over the course of progressive hypoxia, from full saturation (oxygen tension [PO2]=160 Torr [21.3 kPa]) to a PO2 at which oxygen uptake ceased (<10 Torr [1.3 kPa]). Mussels were acclimated to either 5, 15 or 25 degrees C for at least 2 weeks and their respiratory response to progressive hypoxia was measured at three test temperatures (5, 15 and 25 degrees C). The degree of oxygen regulation increased with increasing test temperature, particularly from 5 to 15 degrees C, but decreased with increasing acclimation temperature. The decreased metabolic rate observed for warm-acclimated animals, particularly in the upper portion of the temperature range of the zebra mussel, may allow for conservation of organic energy stores during warm summer months. Compared to other freshwater bivalves, D. polymorpha is a relatively poor oxygen regulator, corresponding with its preference for well-oxygenated aquatic habitats. In addition, a new quantitative method for determining the degree of oxygen regulation is presented.

Male association preferences in a bisexual‐unisexual species complex were studied in clear and turbid environments. In south and central Texas, where the gynogenetic sexual‐parasite Poecilia formosa lives syntopically with Poecilia latipinna as its sexual host species, association times of P. latipinna males with conspecific sexual and heterospecific asexual females in clear and turbid water were measured sequentially. Turbidity had an influence on male mate association behaviour. Males spent less time with any kind of female stimulus in turbid water. There was no preference for conspecific sexual females, either in turbid water or under clear conditions. Also, origin of males and acclimatization to turbid water had no effect. How turbidity as a source of visual noise might affect communication among individuals and how this environmental factor might contribute to the stability of this sexual‐asexual mating complex in nature are discussed.

The response of antioxidants to acclimation and chilling in various tissues of dark-grown maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings was examined in relation to chilling tolerance and protection from chilling-induced oxidative stress. Chilling caused an accumulation of H2O2 in both the coleoptile + leaf and the mesocotyl (but not roots), and acclimation prevented this accumulation. None of the antioxidant enzymes were significantly affected by acclimation or chilling in the coleoptile + leaf or root. However, elevated levels of glutathione in acclimated seedlings may contribute to an enhanced ability to scavenge H2O2 in the coleoptile + leaf. In the mesocotyl (visibly most susceptible to chilling), catalase3 was elevated in acclimated seedlings and may represent the first line of defense from mitochondria-generated H2O2. Nine of the most prominent peroxidase isozymes were induced by acclimation, two of which were located in the cell wall, suggesting a role in lignification. Lignin content was elevated in mesocotyls of acclimated seedlings, likely improving the mechanical strength of the mesocotyl. One cytosolic glutathione reductase isozyme was greatly decreased in acclimated seedlings, whereas two others were elevated, possibly resulting in improved effectiveness of the enzyme at low temperature. When taken together, these responses to acclimation illustrate the potential ways in which chilling tolerance may be improved in preemergent maize seedlings.

We examined the effects of acclimation temperature and two doses (2.5 and 25mgkg(-1)) of a pyrogen (lipopolysaccharide, LPS) on behavioral thermoregulation in juvenile green iguanas. Overall means of body temperatures for the three-day trial periods were compared among three groups of animals acclimated at 15, 25, and 34 degrees C. The responses of each group of animals to the two dosages of LPS and a control saline injection were examined. Within each treatment block, animals either chose high body temperatures characteristic of a fever response or chose low body temperatures characteristic of a hypothermic response. Thermoregulation was influenced by interaction effects between and among, and independent effects of, acclimation temperature, dose of LPS, and day. In some treatment blocks, individual lizard mass positively correlated with mean individual body temperature. Mean mass of lizards that chose higher body temperatures within a treatment block was higher than the mean mass of lizards that chose lower body temperatures. From these results, we concluded that LPS may induce two different behavioral thermoregulatory responses: fever or hypothermia. The actual amplitude and direction of body temperature change appears to be affected by acclimation temperature and possibly by mass or energy reserves of the animal. If the energy reserves are not sufficient to sustain the higher rate of metabolism associated with the higher body temperatures of a hyperthermic or feverish state, the animal may resort to hypothermia.

In short-horn sculpin Myoxocephalus scorpius , the power requirements for fast-start swimming and the length-specific velocity of the curvature wave travelling down the spine ( Û ) were not influenced significantly by acclimation to summer and winter conditions at test temperatures of 5 and 15° C. However, in-vivo and in-vitro muscle performance exhibited acclimation responses at 15° C. Seasonal acclimation altered the escape performance curves for power and Û significantly over a wider temperature range of 0·8–20° C. Û was significantly higher at 20° C in the summer- than winter-acclimation group. The acclimation of lower levels of physiological organization at 15° C may thus serve to extend the thermal limits for escape performance in summer acclimated fish.

1. Dogfish were acclimated to 7, 12 or 17 degrees C and exposed to progressive hypoxia at the temperature to which they had been acclimated. During normoxia, the Q10 values for oxygen uptake, heart rate, cardiac output and respiratory frequency over the full 10 degrees C range were: 2.1, 2.1, 2.1 and 2.5 respectively. Increased acclimation temperature had no effect on cardiac stroke volume or systemic vascular resistance, although there was a decrease in branchial vascular resistance, pHa and pHv. 2. Progressive hypoxia had no effect on heart rate or oxygen uptake at 7 degrees C, whereas at 12 degrees C and 17 degrees C there was bradycardia, and a reduction in O2 uptake, with the critical oxygen tension for both variables being higher at the higher temperature. Cardiac stroke volume increased during hypoxia at each temperature, such that cardiac output did not change significantly at 12 and 17 degrees C. Neither pHa nor pHv changed significantly during hypoxia at any of the three temperatures. 3. The influence of acclimation temperatures on experimental results from poikilotherms is pointed out. Previously-published results show quantitative differences. 4. The significance of the present results with respect to the functioning and location of oxygen receptors is discussed. It is argued that as the metabolic demand and critical oxygen tension of the whole animal are increased at high acclimation temperatures the same must be the case with the oxygen receptor. This would raise the stimulation threshold and could account for the bradycardia seen during hypoxia becoming manifest at higher values of PI,O2, Pa,O2 and Pv,O2 as the acclimation temperature is raised.
