Oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) is commonly grown for oil or bio-fuel production, while the seed residues can be used for animal feed. It can also be grown as a catch crop because of its efficiency in extracting mineral N from the soil profile. However, the N harvest index is usually low, due in part to a low ability to remobilize N from leaves and to the fall of N-rich leaves which allows a significant amount of N to return to the environment. In order to understand how N filling of pods occurs, experiments were undertaken to quantify N flows within the plant by (15)N labelling and to follow the changes in soluble protein profiles of tissues presumed to store and subsequently to remobilize N. Whereas N uptake increased as a function of growth, N uptake capacity decreased at flowering to a non-significant level during pod filling. However, large amounts of endogenous N were transferred from the leaves to the stems and to taproots which acted as a buffering storage compartment later used to supply the reproductive tissue. About 15% of the total N cycling through the plant were lost through leaf fall and 48%, nearly all of which had been remobilized from vegetative tissues, were finally recovered in the mature pods. SDS-PAGE analysis revealed that large amounts of a 23 kDa polypeptide accumulated in the taproots during flowering and was later fully hydrolysed. Its putative function of storage protein is further supported by the fact that when plants were grown at lower temperature, both flowering, its accumulation and further mobilization were delayed. The overall results are discussed in relation to plant strategies which optimize N cycling to reproductive sinks by means of buffering vegetative tissues such as stems and taproots.  相似文献

Two days after exposure of roots to15N labeled N2, partitioning of biologically fixed N into leaves, stems, peduncles, pods, roots and nodules was measured in the early pod development stage of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.). The experimental objective was to determine the quantity of biologically fixed N that is incorporated into vegetative tissue before being mobilized to pods. For the three varieties of cowpea included in the experiment a maximum of 50% of the N, biologically fixed two days earlier, was contained in the pods. The remaining N was distributed throughout the vegetative portion of the plant with at least 30% in stems and leaves which indicates that much of the newly fixed N must cycle through a N pool in these tissues before reaching the pods.  相似文献

Summary Remobilization of15N from vegetative tissue of mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) into pods was measured during the reproductive phase of growth. Plant tissue was labelled with15N during vegetative development. Experiments were conducted in the field at two sites. At one site the soil provided cowpeas with most of their N but at the other site N fixation provided most of the N. Remobilized N from vegetative tissue to pods occurred soon after they began to develop. The quantity of the labelled N ultimately remobilized to the pods amounted to 50% for one cultivar (Tx33) at the high soil N site and 70% at the low N site. For the other cultivar (Tx13) the values were 25% and 30%, respectively. The two cultivars performed very differently with respect to partitioning of N into pods and the rate of N fixation. Even though more N was accumulated in the shoots of the high N fixing cultivar (Tx13) less total N was contained in the pods.  相似文献

The effect of nitrogen source (N(2) or nitrate) on carbon assimilation by photosynthesis and on carbon partitioning between shoots and roots was investigated in pea (Pisum sativum L. 'Baccara') plants at different growth stages using (13)C labelling. Plants were grown in the greenhouse on different occasions in 1999 and 2000. Atmospheric [CO(2)] and growth conditions were varied to alter the rate of photosynthesis. Carbon allocation to nodulated roots was unaffected by N source. At the beginning of the vegetative period, nodulated roots had priority for assimilates over shoots; this priority decreased during later stages and became identical to that of the shoot during seed filling. Carbon allocation to nodulated roots was always limited by competition with shoots, and could be predicted for each phenological stage: during vegetative and flowering stages a single, negative exponential relationship was established between sink intensity (percentage of C allocated to the nodulated root per unit biomass) and net photosynthesis. At seed filling, the amount of carbon allocated to the nodulated root was directly related to net photosynthesis. Respiration of nodulated roots accounted for more than 60 % of carbon allocated to them during growth. Only at flowering was respiration affected by N supply: it was significantly higher for strictly N(2)-fixing plants (83 %) than for plants fed with nitrate (71 %). At the vegetative stage, the increase in carbon in nodulated root biomass was probably limited by respiration losses.  相似文献

Two high (NC106, NC111) and two normal (NC103, NC107) seed protein concentration lines, derived from two different recurrent selection populations of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) were subjected to partial defoliation at beginning seed fill (R5) under outdoor pot culture and field conditions. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that capacity to store N in vegetative organs and/or to mobilize that N to reproductive organs is associated with the high seed protein concentration trait. Symbiotic N2 fixation was the sole source of N in the pot experiment and the major source of N (met > 50% of the N requirement) in the low N soil used in the field experiment. Seed protein concentration and seed yield at maturity in both experiments and N accumulation and mobilization between R5 and maturity in the pot experiment were measured. The four genotypes did not differ significantly with respect to the amount of N accumulated before beginning seed fill (R5). Removal of up to two leaflets per trifoliolate leaf at R5 significantly decreased the seed protein concentration of NC107/111 but had no effect on this trait in NC103/106. Defoliation treatments significantly decreased seed yield, whole plant N accumulation (N2-fixation) during reproductive growth and vegetative N mobilization of all genotypes. Differences in harvest indices between the high and low protein lines accounted for approximately 35% of the differences in protein concentration. The two normal protein lines mobilized more vegetative N to the seed (average. 5.26 g plant–1) than the two high protein lines (average. 4.28 g plant–1). The two high seed protein lines (NC106, NC111) exhibited significantly different relative dependencies of reproductive N accumulation on vegetative N mobilization, 45% vs. 29%, in the control treatment. Whereas, NC103 with normal and NC106 with high seed protein concentration exhibited similar relative dependencies of reproductive N accumulation on vegetative N mobilization, (47% vs. 45%). Collectively, these results indicate that N stored in shoot organs before R5 and greater absolute and relative contribution of vegetative N mobilization to the reproductive N requirement are not responsible for the high seed protein concentration trait.Abbreviations DAT days after transplanting - R5 fifth reproductive stage according to Fehr and Caviness, 1977 Mention of trademark or proprietary product does not constitute a guarantee or warranty of the product by the United States Department of Agriculture and does not imply its approval to the exclusion of other products that may also be suitable.  相似文献

ME, efficiency of mobilized pre-anthesis C utilization in grain filling (g C g–1C)

Significant mobilization of protein and carbohydrates in vegetative plant parts of wheat regularly occurs during grain filling. While this suggests a contribution of reserves to grain filling, the actual efficiency of mobilized assimilate conversion into grain mass (ME) is unknown. In the present study the contribution of pre-anthesis C (C fixed prior to anthesis) to grain filling in main stem ears of two spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars was determined by 13C/12C steady-state labelling. Mobilization of pre-anthesis C in vegetative plant parts between anthesis and maturity, and the contributions of water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) and protein to pre-anthesis C mobilization were also assessed. Experiments were performed with two levels of N fertilizer supply in each of 2 years. Pre-anthesis reserves contributed 11–29% to the total mass of C in grains at maturity. Pre-anthesis C accumulation in grains was dependent on both the mass of pre-anthesis C mobilized in above-ground vegetative plant parts (r2 = 0·87) and ME (defined as g pre-anthesis C deposited in grains per g pre-anthesis C mobilized in above-ground vegetative plant parts; r2 = 0·40). ME varied between 0·48 and 0·75. The effects of years, N fertilizer treatments and cultivars on ME were all related to differences in the fractional contribution of WSC to pre-anthesis C mobilization. Multiple regression analysis indicated that C from mobilized pre-anthesis WSC may be used more efficiently in grain filling than C present in proteins at anthesis and mobilized during grain filling. Possible causes for variability of ME are discussed.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of defoliation intensity, defoliation frequency, and interactions with N supply on N uptake, N mobilization from and N allocation to roots, adult leaves, and growing leaves. Plants of Lolium perenne were grown under two contrasted N regimes. Defoliation intensity treatments consisted of a range of percentage leaf area removal (0, 25, 50, 75, or 100%). These treatments were applied in parallel to a set of plants previously undefoliated, and to a second set of plants which had been defoliated several times at a constant height. A (15)N tracer technique was used to quantify N uptake, mobilization, and allocation over a 7 d period. A significant reduction in plant N uptake was observed with the removal of more than 75% of lamina area, but only with high N supply. As defoliation intensity increased, the amount of N taken up and subsequently allocated to growing leaves during the labelling period was maintained at the expense of N allocation to roots and adult leaves. Increasing defoliation intensity increased the relative contribution of roots supplying mobilized N to growing leaves and decreased the relative contribution of adult leaves. Defoliation frequency did not substantially alter N uptake, mobilization, and allocation between roots, adult and growing leaves on a plant basis. However, tiller number per plant was largely increased under repeated defoliation, hence indicating that allocation and mobilization of N to growing leaves, on the basis of individual tillers, was decreased by defoliation frequency.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to elucidate whether remobilized N from lower leaves is involved in causing the drop in N(2) fixation during pod-filling in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L). Moreover, we addressed the question of whether remobilized N from lower leaves would reach the nodules. Nodulated common bean plants were grown in a growth chamber in quartz sand. During a 2-week period, at vegetative and at reproductive growth, 50% of the leaves (lower part) were either excised or individually darkened, thereby removing the same photosynthetic capacity yet allowing N to be remobilized from the darkened leaves. Moreover, at the vegetative growth period, three lower leaves per plants were (15)N labelled by applying (15)NH(4)NO(3) prior to imposing the darkening treatment. Leaf darkening at vegetative growth induced N remobilization as well as reduced N(2)-fixation rates and growth. Leaf excision at reproductive growth enhanced N(2) fixation. Changes in N(2)-fixation rates were in all cases the result of altered growth rates, while the % N in the whole plant and in various plant parts remained conserved. Directly after leaf labelling, but also at the end of the vegetative growth period, substantial amounts of (15)N from the leaves could be recovered in nodules in the control, and in higher amounts in the leaf-darkening treatment. It is proposed that nitrogen from leaves circulates within the plant via nodules, and that the strength or composition of this circular flow may be the signal for a putative N-feedback effect.  相似文献

The fluxes of (1) exogenous nitrogen (N) assimilation and (2) remobilization of endogenous N from vegetative plant compartments were measured by 15N labeling during the seed-filling period in pea (Pisum sativum L. cv Cameor), to better understand the mechanism of N remobilization. While the majority (86%) of exogenous N was allocated to the vegetative organs before the beginning of seed filling, this fraction decreased to 45% at the onset of seed filling, the remainder being directed to seeds. Nitrogen remobilization from vegetative parts contributed to 71% of the total N in mature seeds borne on the first two nodes (first stratum). The contribution of remobilized N to total seed N varied, with the highest proportion at the beginning of filling; it was independent of the developmental stage of each stratum of seeds, suggesting that remobilized N forms a unique pool, managed at the whole-plant level and supplied to all filling seeds whatever their position on the plant. Once seed filling starts, N is remobilized from all vegetative organs: 30% of the total N accumulated in seeds was remobilized from leaves, 20% from pod walls, 11% from roots, and 10% from stems. The rate of N remobilization was maximal when seeds of all the different strata were filling, consistent with regulation according to the N demand of seeds. At later stages of seed filling, the rate of remobilization decreases and may become controlled by the amount of residual N in vegetative tissues.  相似文献

Over-expressing an amino acid permease in Vicia narbonensis seeds increases sink strength for N that is evident from the higher seed protein content and seed weight. Here, the effect of increased seed sink strength of line AAP-12 on growth, development, and on whole plant carbon and nitrogen uptake and partitioning is analysed. AAP-12 plants have a prolonged growth period. Accumulation and partitioning of dry matter and N in leaves, stems, and pods are higher whereas remobilization to the seeds is delayed, indicating that the switch from growth to reserve allocation and remobilization is delayed. Measuring uptake and allocation of (15)N-ammonia applied via the roots revealed a higher and longer label uptake period during maturation. Measuring whole plant carbon fixation and allocation after (13)C labelling shows higher levels at maturation, particularly in seeds, indicating higher seed sink strength for C and increased allocation into maturing seeds. Levels of cytokinins were dramatically increased in AAP-12 seeds indicating its role in nitrogen-mediated growth stimulation. AAP-12 seeds have higher natural abundances for (13)C indicating increased C fixation via PEP carboxylase in order to meet the higher demand of carbon acceptors for amino acid synthesis. In summary, increased seed sink strength for N in AAP-12 stimulates seed growth, but also that of vegetative organs, which finally leads to a higher ratio of vegetative to seed biomass at maturity and thus a lower harvest index. Therefore, the increased N uptake due to higher seed demand of AAP-12 is partly compensated by growth stimulation of vegetative organs.  相似文献

In taproot of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.), a 23 kDa polypeptide has been recently identified as a putative vegetative storage protein (VSP) because of its accumulation during flowering and its specific mobilization to sustain grain filling when N uptake is strongly reduced. The objectives were to characterize this protein more precisely and to study the effect of environmental factors (N availability, daylength, temperature, water deficit, wounding) or endogenous signals (methyl jasmonate, abscisic acid) that might change the N source/sink relationships within the plant, and may therefore trigger its accumulation. The 23 kDa putative VSP has two isoforms, is glycosylated and both isoforms share the same N-terminal sequence which had been used to produce specific polyclonal antibodies. Low levels of an immunoreactive protein of 24 kDa were found in leaves and flowers. In taproot, the 23 kDa putative VSP seems to accumulate only in the vacuoles of peripheral cortical parenchyma cells, around the phloem vessels. Among all treatments tested, the accumulation of this protein could only be induced by abscisic acid and methyl jasmonate. When compared to control plants, application of methyl jasmonate reduced N uptake by 89% after 15 d, induced a strong remobilization of N from senescing leaves and a concomitant accumulation of the 23 kDa putative VSP. These results suggested that, in rape, the 23 kDa protein is used as a storage buffer between N losses from senescing leaves promoted by methyl jasmonate and grain filling.  相似文献

Steady-state labelling of all post-anthesis photosynthate of wheat was performed to assess the mobilization of pre-anthesis C (C fixed prior to anthesis) in vegetative plant parts during grain filling. Results were compared with estimates obtained by indirect approaches to mobilization of pre-anthesis C: ‘classical’ growth analysis and balance sheets of water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) and protein. Experiments were performed with two spring wheat cultivars grown with differential nitrogen fertilizer supply in 1991 and 1992. The fraction of pre-anthesis C mobilized in above-ground vegetative biomass ranged between 24 and 34% of total C present at anthesis. Treatment effects on mobilization of pre-anthesis C in total above-ground vegetative biomass were closely related (r2 = 0·89) to effects on mobilization of WSC-C plus protein-C (estimated as N mobilized × 3·15). On average, 81% of pre-anthesis C mobilization was attributable to the balance of pre-anthesis WSC (48%) and protein (33%) between anthesis and maturity. In roots, WSC and protein mobilization accounted for only 29% of the loss of pre-anthesis C. Notably, mobilization of pre-anthesis C was 1·4–2·6 times larger than the net loss of C from above-ground vegetative biomass between anthesis and maturity. This discrepancy was mainly due to post-anthesis C accumulation in glumes and stem. Post-anthesis C accumulation was related to continued synthesis of structural biomass after anthesis and accounted for a mean 15% of total C contained in above-ground vegetative plant parts at maturity. A close correspondence between net loss of C and mobilization of pre-anthesis C was only apparent in leaf blades and leaf sheaths. Although balance sheets of WSC and protein also underrated the mobilization of pre-anthesis C by ≈ 19%, they gave a much better estimate of pre-anthesis C mobilization than growth analysis.  相似文献

The seasonal course of nitrogen uptake, incorporation and remobilization in different shoot components of winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) was studied under field conditions including three rates of 15N labelled nitrogen application (0, 100 or 200 kg N ha-1) and two irrigation treatments (rainfed or watered at a deficit of 20 mm). The total amount of irrigation water applied was 260 mm, split over 13 occasions in a 7-week-period ranging from 1 week before onset of flowering until 4 weeks after flowering.Nitrogen application and irrigation increased plant growth and nitrogen accumulation. Irrespective of N and irrigation treatment more than 50% of total shoot N was present in the stem when flowering started. At the end of flowering, pod walls were the main N store containing about 30–40% of shoot N. The quantities of N remobilized from stems and pod walls amounted in all treatments to about 70% of the N present in these organs at mid-flowering. At harvest, stem and pod walls each contained about 10% of total shoot N, the remaining 80% being incorporated into seeds. The main component contributing to the response of seed N accumulation to nitrogen application and irrigation was pods in axillary racemes. Up to 20 kg N ha-1, corresponding to about 10% of final shoot N content, was lost from the plants by leaf drop.Irrigation increased the recovery at harvest of applied N from 30% to about 50%, while the level of N application did not affect the N recovery. 15N labelled (fertilizer derived) nitrogen constituted a greater proportion of the N content in old leaves than in young leaves and increased with age in the former, but not in the latter. Relative to soil N, fertilizer derived N also contributed more to the N content of vegetative than to that of reproductive shoot components. Small net changes in shoot N content after flowering reflected a balance between N import and export, leading to continuous dilution of 15N labelled N with unlabelled N.  相似文献

The dynamics of N uptake and N partitioning in peach (Prunus persica, Batsch) trees of a very early (cv. Flordastar) and a very late (cv. Tudia) fruit ripening varieties grown under a mediterranean climate was assessed during one season. Labelled N was applied to two-year old potted trees which were destructively harvested at regular intervals during the vegetative and reproductive cycle. Tree phenology as well as vegetative and reproductive growth of the two genotypes strongly differed: bud burst started in late January in Flordastar and late March in Tudia. Leaf senescence in Flordastar was almost complete by mid October, while Tudia still retained a significant fraction of leaves at the December harvest. Fruit yield averaged 4.0 and 6.9 kg tree–1 (fresh weight) in cv. Flordastar and Tudia, respectively, and fruit size was within commercial standards for the two genotypes. After growth resumption, shoot and fruit growth mainly relied on N remobilised from reserves, which accounted for 72–80% of total N in new growth. Nitrogen uptake by both genotypes was relatively low in the first month after bud burst, then was more rapid until the end of the season. Total labelled N uptake did not differ between the two genotypes and accounted on average for 65–70% of total N supplied. The kinetics of labelled N uptake were similar in the two varieties despite the great difference in the timing of their fruit ripening. Leaves were the main sink for N during much of the experimental period. The fruits, when present, also used a significant fraction of the absorbed N, which was almost constant until fruit ripening in Flordastar. Nitrogen partitioning to leaves declined progressively after summer, when a greater fraction of the absorbed N was recovered in the twigs, the trunk, the fine roots and especially in the coarse roots. The data provide evidence for guiding the kinetics of N supply to peach orchards under a Mediterranean climate.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The influence of initial residual leaf area and initial N reserves on N uptake, final N distribution, and yield in alfalfa regrowing after cutting, were studied. METHODS: The effects of two levels of initial residual leaf area (plants cut to 15 cm, with (L+) or without (L-) their leaves) and two initial levels of N status [high N (HN) or low N (LN)] on growth, N uptake and N partitioning, allocation and storage after 29 d of post-cutting regrowth were analysed. KEY RESULTS: During most of the regrowth period (8-29 d after the initial harvest), HN and L+ plants had higher net N uptake rates than LN and L- plants, respectively, resulting in a greater final mineral N uptake for these treatments. However, the final partitioning of exogenous N to the regrowing shoots was the same for all treatments (67 % of total exogenous N on average). Final shoot growth, total plant N content, and N allocation to the different taproot N pools were significantly lower in plants with reduced initial leaf area and initial N reserve status. CONCLUSIONS: Although both initial residual leaf area and initial N reserves influenced alfalfa regrowth, the residual leaf area had a greater effect on final forage production and N composition in the taproot, whereas the N uptake rate and final total N content in plant were more affected by the initial N reserve status than by the residual leaf area. Moreover, N storage as proteins (especially as vegetative storage proteins, rather than nitrate or amino acids) in the taproot allowed nitrate uptake to occur at significant rates. This suggests that protein storage is not only a means of sequestering N in a tissue for further mobilization, utilization for growth or tissue maintenance, but may also indirectly influence both N acquisition and reduction capacities.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of phosphorus (P) application and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi (Funneliformis mosseae) on growth, foliar nitrogen mobilization, and phosphorus partitioning in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata cv. Vita-5) plants. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in pots containing a mixture of vermiculite and sterilized quartz sand. Mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal cowpea plants were supplied with three levels of soluble P (0.1 (low P), 0.5 (medium P), or 1.0 mM (high P)). Cowpea plants supplied with low P fertilization showed significantly (p?<?0.05) higher root colonization than those with medium and high P fertilization at both the vegetative and pod-filling stages. P uptake and growth parameters of cowpea plants were positively influenced by mycorrhizal inoculation only in the medium P fertilization treatment at the vegetative stage. Lack of these effects in the other treatments may be linked to either a very low P supply (in the low P treatment at the vegetative stage) or the availability of optimal levels of freely diffusible P in the substrate towards the pod-filling stage due to accumulation with time. The N concentration in leaves of all cowpea plants were lower at the pod-filling stage than at the vegetative stage, presumably as a result of N mobilization from vegetative organs to the developing pods. This was however not influenced by AM fungal inoculation and may be a consequence of the lack of an improved plant P acquisition by the fungus at the pod-filling stage.  相似文献

The role of methyl jasmonate (MeJa) in promoting senescence has been described previously in many species, but it has been questioned in monocarpic species whether induced senescence is a result of a potential death hormone like MeJa, or a consequence of an increased metabolic drain resulting from the growth of reproductive tissue. In oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.), a polypeptide of 23 kDa has been recently identified as a putative vegetative storage protein (VSP). This polypeptide could be used as a storage buffer between N losses from senescing leaves putatively promoted by methyl jasmonate that might be produced by flowers, and grain filling which occurs later on, while N uptake is strongly reduced. In order to describe causal relationships during Brassica napus L. plant responses to MeJa treatment, a kinetic experiment was performed to determine the order and the amplitude with which general processes such as growth, photosynthesis, chlorophyll content, N uptake, and N storage under the form of the 23 kDa VSP are affected. One of the most immediate consequences of MeJa treatment was the strong reduction of nitrate uptake within 6 h, relative to control plants. However, this was not a specific effect as K(+) uptake was similarly affected. Photosynthesis was reduced later (after 24 h), while chlorophyll content as well as leaf growth also decreased in a similar way. Moreover, this was concomitant with a remobilization of endogenous unlabelled N from senescing leaves to roots. Accumulation of the 23 kDa VSP was induced in the taproot after 24 h of MeJa treatment and was increased 10-fold within 8 d. On the other hand, the reversible effect of a MeJa pretreatment was tested in the long term (i.e. along the growth cycle) using plants previously grown in field conditions induced for flowering. Results show that a MeJa pulse induced a reversible effect on N uptake inhibition. In parallel, protein immunologically related to the 23 kDa VSP was detected in stems with a similar molecular weight (23 kDa), and in flowers and leaves with a molecular weight of 24 kDa. This accumulation was concomitant with the remobilization of both subunits of Rubisco. During stem and pod development, this protein induced by MeJa is fully hydrolysed. The external and intermittent supply of MeJa mimic some of the plant physiological processes previously reported under natural conditions. This suggests that in oilseed rape, methyl jasmonate could be considered as a possible monocarpic senescence factor while accumulation/mobilization of the 23 kDa VSP in taproot could be a marker for the cessation of N uptake and the initiation of a massive leaf senescence.  相似文献

The objectives of this work were to determine the effect of nodulation on dry matter, reduced-N, and phosphorus accumulation and partitioning in above-ground vegetative parts and pods of field-grown soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr. cv Harosoy).

From comparison of nodulated and nonnodulated isolines, it was estimated that nodulated plants attained 81 and 71% of total-plant (above ground) N from uptake of soil N in 1981 and 1982, respectively. These data, along with visibly greener leaves of nodulated plants, led us to assume that nonnodulated plants were under a moderate N stress relative to nodulated plants. Nonnodulated plants accumulated less total-plant N and partitioned less dry matter and N to the pods, compared with nodulated plants. This occurred even though net photosynthesis, as estimated by rate and amount of dry matter accumulation, was the same for both nonnodulated and nodulated plants. Rate of dry matter and reduced-N accumulation in pods was less for nonnodulated than for nodulated plants while duration of podfill was similar for both isolines. From these data we concluded that moderate N stress affected partitioning of photosynthate rather than net photosynthesis, and that N played a role in translocation of photosynthate to the pods. Total plants (above-ground portion) and pods of both nodulated and nonnodulated plants accumulated similar amounts of phosphorus, which indicated that phosphorus and N accumulation were independent.

Remobilization of nitrogen and phosphorus from vegetation to pods preceded dry matter remobilization. It appeared that either more nitrogen accumulation prior to podfill, or continued nitrogen assimilation during podfill would increase nitrogen and dry matter partitioning to pods, but that increasing photosynthesis without concomitantly increasing nitrogen input may not necessarily result in enhanced seed production.
