Summary Results are presented from two replicated three-breed cross diallels that were conducted after 20 generations of selection for purebred performance in mice. The selection criteria for the different lines were: litter size at birth (LS), weaning weight at 4 weeks (WW), weight gain from week 4 to week 6 (WG), and body fat content at week 6 (FT). Additionally, a random-mating control line (C) was kept. Significant maternal heterosis was found in litter size and weaning weight. Estimates of maternal heterosis in litter size were very high, ranging from 17 to 50% of the mean of the corresponding single crosses. Maternal heterosis in weaning weight usually was negative and ranged from +9 to -11%. Significant maternal heterosis in feed efficiency and weaning weight could only be found in a few cases. Total performance of three-breed crosses was highly superior to that of single crosses and purebreds. Means of the corresponding purebreds or single crosses were of little use in predicting three-breed cross performance.  相似文献

Summary The influence of purebred selection on the combining abilities of five lines of mice was examined. Two replicated testcross diallels were made after 10 and 20 generations of purebred selection for litter size, weaning weight, weight gain, and feed efficiency. Average direct genetic effects were of major importance, followed by average maternal genetic effects. In all of the replications, between two and four out of ten crosses showed significant heterosis. Heterosis ranged from 0 to 38% in litter size, from 0 to 20% in weaning weight, from -11 to 11% in weight gain, and from -8 to 17% in feed efficiency. For litter size and weaning weight, heterosis estimates increased between 80 and 100% from generation 10 to 20. Weight gain and feed efficiency showed decreasing heterosis with partly negative estimates in the second diallel. Combinations exhibiting significant heterosis varied between replicates and between the two diallels.  相似文献

Farmer profit depends on the number of slaughter rabbits. The improvement of litter size (LS) at birth by two-stage selection for ovulation rate (OR) and LS could modify survival rate from birth to slaughter. This study was aiming to estimate direct and correlated response on LS traits and peri- and postnatal survival traits in the OR_LS rabbit line selected first only for OR (first period) and then for OR and LS using independent culling levels (second period). The studied traits were OR, LS measured as number of total born, number of kits born alive (NBA) and dead (NBD), and number of kits at weaning (NW) and young rabbits at slaughter (NS). Prenatal survival (LS/OR) and survival at birth (NBA/LS), at weaning (NW/NBA) and at slaughter (NS/NW) were also studied. Data were analysed using Bayesian inference methods. Heritability for LS traits were low, 0.07 for NBA, NW and NS. Survival traits had low values of heritability 0.07, 0.03 and 0.03 for NBA/LS, NW/NBA and NS/NW, respectively. After six generations of selection by OR (first period), a small increase in NBD and a slight decrease in NBA/LS were found. However, no correlated responses on NW/NBA and NS/NW were observed. After 11 generations of two-stage selection for OR and LS (second period), correlated responses on NBA, NW and NS were 0.12, 0.12 and 0.11 kits per generation, respectively, whereas no substantial modifications on NBA/LS, NW/NBA and NS/NW were found. In conclusion, two-stage selection improves the number of young rabbits at slaughter without modifying survival from birth to slaughter.

Best-hybridized crossing should ideally result in optimal exploitation of heterosis of lines and capitalize on expressed heterosis. Rabbit breeding is heading in the direction of breeding for best-hybridized crossing of meat rabbits. Most special sire lines are selected for post-weaning average daily gain and marketing weight. Post-weaning growth has a negative and favorable genetic correlation with the feed conversion ratio, which is used in indirect selection for feed conversion ratio. The most common selection criteria for special maternal lines are related to litter size at birth or at weaning. Since the heritability of most reproductive traits is low, we must collect as many individual and relative records as possible in the genetic evaluation of rabbits. The BLUP procedure under an animal repeatability model is the most common procedure used for evaluation of animals in selection programs for special lines of meat rabbits. Direct selection for litter size is less efficient than selection for post-weaning growth, but the estimation of heterosis is generally higher for litter size than that for the post-weaning growth. Evaluation of heterosis could be performed by estimating crossbreeding parameters in the cross or comparing contemporary productivity among purebreds and crossbreds. Here, we reviewed breeding of special lines, exploitation of heterosis of crossbreds, and establishment of crossbreeding system of hybrid meat rabbits and summarized the methodologies of breeding special lines, criteria in selection programs, and the result of heterosis estimates.  相似文献

All possible crosses and reciprocals were made among four inbred lines (F = 92%) developed from 12 generations of full-sib mating. All lines originated from a common outbred base population of ICR-albino mice. Data were obtained from 356 litter containing 2,734 mice to evaluate heterosis, reciprocal effects, sex effects and their interactions as they affect body weight and weight gain. Heterosis was significant for most of the postweaning traits (42- and 56-day weight and gain from 21 to 42 days). Nonadditive gene action may have included overdominance and epistasis since both reciprocal linecrosses were generally heavier than those of the better inbred lines. Although significant differences in reciprocals and inbred lines were not frequent, there were sufficient differences to indicate that lines varied in the fixation of loci during inbreeding. Sex-heterosis interactions were significant for 12 of 30 possible cases. However, eight of the 12 significant interactions occurred in crosses involving only one of the lines. The interactions were of the divergent type and arose from males exhibiting more heterosis than females. Overdominance in genes on the sex chromosomes modified by other loci (epistasis) was proposed as a possible explanation for these results. Some sex-linkage affecting growth was evident from the interaction of sex with reciprocal effects.  相似文献

Selection for litter size (Line S1) and for post-weaning body weight gain (Line G) increased spontaneous ovulation rate in mature females by 69 and 73%, respectively, over that of randomly bred control mice (Line C). Inbreeding from S1 mice with selection for litter size produced highly inbred lines with elevated ovulation rates. Inbreeding from Line C mice produced a 21% divergence among lines, but did not depress the mean ovulation rate. Crosses of these lines revealed little heterosis in ovulation rate. LH receptors were induced by treating females from 22 days of age with diethylstilboestrol for 4 days and FSH for 2 days. The in-vitro binding of 125I-labelled hCG per microgram DNA decreased 56% in response to selection for litter size and increased 57% in response to selection for body weight gain, indicating high susceptibility of this trait to genetic change. Inbreeding from Line C mice produced a 135% divergence amongst lines, but did not depress the mean LH receptor induction. Body weight had significant effects on ovulation rate and LH receptor induction. These results show that selection for litter size and for rapid post-weaning body weight gain increases ovulation rate, but we suggest that different mechanisms are involved in these responses.  相似文献

Summary A total of 2,457 lifetime performance records of 29 genetic groups of mice was analyzed using multiple regression of records on the proportion of gene contribution from 6 lines (designated as Lines MP, mQ, WP, wQ, CP and cQ). Genetic effects were partitioned into line additive, line maternal, direct heterosis, maternal heterosis and paternal heterosis effects. The line additive and line maternal effects were expressed as deviations from Line cQ. Seventeen of 25 line additive effects differed significantly (P<0.05) from Line cQ whereas only 4 of 25 line maternal effects deviated significantly from Line cQ. Deviations in line additive effects from cQ were negative in all lines examined whereas deviations in line maternal effects from cQ were all positive, indicating a negative relationship between line additive and line maternal effects. Direct heterosis effects were all positive and significant (P < 0.01) except in the MPxWP cross which was produced by mating Lines MP and WP of the same base population (P). Maternal heterosis effects were significant in 10 of 20 cases whereas paternal heterosis effects were significant in 13 of 20 cases. Although direct heterosis is a major component of total heterosis effects (sum of direct, maternal and paternal heterosis), the results suggest that parental heterosis may need to be considered in producing multiple way crosses. The fitting of line additive, line maternal, direct heterosis, maternal heterosis and paternal heterosis effects in the multiple regression model effectively accounted for all genetic effects in lifetime performance.Animal Research Centre Contribution No. 1326  相似文献

A modified crossfostering technique was developed to compare the performance of nurse dams in selected and control populations of mice. The H6 and M16 populations were selected for increased 6-week body weight and 3- to 6-week postweaning gain, respectively, while the C2 and ICR populations were the respective controls. Crossfostering was performed using H6, M16 and their reciprocal F1 crosses as nurse dams in the selected crossfostering group and C2 ICR and their reciprocals in the control group. Measurements recorded for nurse dams included mean body weight of 8 young within a nursed litter at birth (MWB) and 12 days of age (MW12). The latter was used as a measure of postnatal maternal performance. Other traits recorded for nurse dams were number born (NB), body weight at parturition (DWP) and 12 days postpartum (DW12), and weight gain (DWG), feed intake (FED) and efficiency (EFF = DWG/FED) for the first 12 days of lactation. The correlated response in MW12 was negative (P less than .01) for M16 and essentially zero for H6. Both lines exhibited positive (P less than .01) correlated responses in DWP and DW12 and no change in EFF. Only the H6 line increases significantly in DWG and FED as a result of selection. NB increased in M16 and H6, but was significant for the latter population only. Population differences in selection response [(M16-ICR)-(H6-C2)] were significant for FED only, primarily due to average direct genetic effects. Direct comparisons of M16 and H6 indicated that M16 was larger in DWP and DW12 but smaller in DWG and EFF. Average direct genetic effects favored M16 for NB, DWP, and DW12, whereas average maternal genetic effects favored H6 for NB, DWP, DW12 and FED. Percent direct heterosis, in F1 crosses of selected populations was significant for MW12 (13.7%) ,FED (10.8%) and NB (11.4%). Direct heterosis in F1 crosses of the controls was significant for MW12 (9.4%), NB (6.6%), DWP (3.5%), DW12 (3.3%) and FED (4.4%). The effects of MW12, DWG and metabolic body size (MBS) accounted for 47% of the variation in FED, pooled within populations. Of these variables, MW12 accounted for the highest proportion (32%) of variation in total feed intake.  相似文献

Summary The improvement of rate of seedling emergence and early seedling growth of maize (Zea mays L.) under cool conditions has been an objective of breeding programs in cool regions for many years. To study inheritance of emergence time, and to determine if differences in emergence time were due to differences in seedling growth, F1, F2 and backcross generations of a diallel cross of two rapidly emerging lines from CIMMYT Pool 5, 5-113 and 5-154, and two elite Corn Belt Dent lines, A619 and A632, were grown in controlled environment rooms at low temperatures. The lines from Pool 5 emerged significantly faster than A619 and A632 over a range of low temperature conditions. This difference occurred both when the lines themselves were tested and when the lines were tested as male and female parents in crosses. The Pool 5 lines converted a higher proportion of their original seed to new root and shoot tissue than did A619 and A632, indicating that they had a faster seedling growth rate. Primarily this was due to a faster loss of seed reserve, rather than a more efficient conversion process.A significant difference occurred between A619 and A632 for emergence time, but this was not due to a difference in seedling growth rate.Reciprocal differences occurred only in the F1 generation in crosses involving A619, and then marked effects could be attributed to the male parent. Reciprocal differences tended to disappear in the F2. This suggested that the genotype of the embryo and endosperm was of much greater importance than the genotype of the maternal parent in determining differences of time to emergence and seedling growth.Mid-parent heterosis occurred for time to emergence and seed loss, a measure of mean rate of utilization of seed reserve, in all crosses. High parent heterosis occurred in several crosses for these traits. High parent heterosis occurred in all crosses for efficiency of utilization of seed reserve.A generation means analysis indicated that both additive and dominance effects were present for rate of seedling growth in crosses between A632 and the Pool 5 lines.  相似文献

Summary Two populations of randombred of different origin (P and Q) containing eight lines (MP, WP, BP, CP, MQ, WQ, BQ and CQ) were used to evaluate the growth, feed efficiency and lifetime performance of females from eight pure lines and 16 F1 crosses. Line comparisons within populations (P or Q) revealed that the heaviest line at days 21, 42 and 63 was W, followed by lines B, M and C in both populations, while the highest in feed efficiency between days 21 and 63 was line W, followed by lines B, M and C in population P, and was line B followed by lines W, M and C in population Q. Generally, average body weights and feed efficiencies of crosses within and between populations were similar to those of mid-parents. Selection produced line W superior to the line M in additive direct genetic effects on body weight and feed efficiency in each population, and line WP superior to line WQ in additive maternal genetic effects on body weights at days 21, 42 and 63. In lifetime performance tests, total 20-day weight of litters produced by a dam during 200 days averaged from 442.7 g (WP) to 739.1 g (MP) for the eight lines. Lines M and W of populations P and Q generally did not differ in additive direct and maternal genetic effects on lifetime performance. Crosses excelled lines in the number of litters raised to weaning (5.44 vs. 5.25) and total 20-day litter weight per dam during 200 days (648.5 vs. 589.3 g). For lifetime 20-day litter weight per group, crosses from unselected lines (C) exceeded crosses from lines selected for nursing ability (M), adult weight (W) and both traits (B). Crosses of lines from different populations showed a higher heterosis in lifetime performance than crosses of lines within populations. Heterosis in the number of litters raised to weaning, and total 20-day litter weight per dam was significant in crosses between lines CP and CQ, between lines WP and wQ, and between lines WP and mQ. Crosses CPCQ and CQCP had a highly persistent production during lifetime tests.Animal Research Institute Publication 860USDA SEA-AR, Purdue University, West Lafayette, In. 47906 (USA)  相似文献

Genetic control of survival of frozen mouse embryos   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Lines of mice selected for increased litter size (L+), increased body weight (W+), or randomly (K) were used to study genetic variation in embryo cryosurvival in response to standard cryopreservation protocols. A total of 60528-cell embryos from 400 females were used in two studies. In Study 1, embryos from L+, W+, and K were frozen by slow-cool and ultrarapid (direct-plunge) methods to evaluate effects of selection on cryosurvival and genotype X freezing method interaction. Post-thaw survival (PTS) was measured as percentage of recovered embryos developing in vitro to blastocyst per donor female. Nonfrozen control embryos developed similarly for each line. Within slow-cool freezing, lines differed (W+ greater than K, W+ = L+, L+ = K; p less than 0.05); no differences were observed within the ultrarapid freezing. However, line X method interaction effects on PTS were not significant. In Study 2, reciprocal crosses were made between L+ and K and between W+ and K. Hybrid and pure line embryos were frozen by slow-cooling. Control embryos developed similarly for all genotypes. Selection lines did not differ for overall PTS. However, hybrid embryos from L+ dams were superior to those from K dams (84 vs. 61%; p less than .001). No overall embryo heterosis was observed. Differences were not significant among embryo genotypes or treatments for cell number or in vivo survival. These results demonstrate significant correlated responses in embryo post-thaw cryosurvival due to selection, and implicate both maternal and embryonic genomes as controlling mouse embryo cryosurvival.  相似文献

Crossfostering was performed using lines selected for increased 6-week body weight (H6) and increased 3-to 6-week postweaning gain (M16) and their reciprocal F1 crosses as nurse dams in the selected crossfostering group, and base population controls (C2, ICR) and their reciprocal F1 crosses in the control group. The offspring suckled were H6, M16 and F2 crosses in the selected group, and C2, ICR and their F2 crosses in the control group. Measurements taken on the individual offspring were body weights at birth (WB) and at 12, 21, 31, 42, and 63 days (W12, W21, W31, W42 and W63, respectively) and weight gains between adjacent ages (GB-12, G12–21, G21–31, G31–42 and G42–63, respectively). Least squares constants fitted to populations of genetic and nurse dams were used to calculate specific linear contrasts. Correlated responses to selection in average direct genetic effects were significant and positive for all traits examined in both H6 and M16, while the correlated responses in average maternal genetic effects were negative in M16 and negligible in H6. Selection response was primarily due to average direct genetic effects while the contribution of average maternal genetic effects was of secondary importance. The response in average direct genetic effects was smaller in M16 than in H6 through weaning (WB, W12 and W21), but was larger in M16 for postweaning weights (W31, W42 and W63). The correlated responses in average maternal genetic effects were consistently smaller in M16 than in H6. Direct heterosis was significant for all traits except for G12–21 and G42–63 in the control group, whereas maternal heterosis was significant for weight gains at early ages and for body weights. Direct heterosis tended to be larger than maternal heterosis in both selected and control crosses. Percent direct heterosis for body weight was larger in the selected crosses relative to the control crosses through 31 days of age, but the trend was reversed by 63 days. Percent maternal heterosis was consistently larger in the selected crosses.  相似文献

Female mice from lines which had undergone long-term single trait and antagonistic index selection for litter size and body weight were analysed for ovulation rate and LH receptor induction. Compared to randomly selected controls, selection for large litter size increased ovulation rate (60%; P less than 0.001) and decreased LH receptor induction per microgram ovarian DNA (87%; P less than 0.01). Selection for large body weight increased ovulation rate (18%; P less than 0.001), but did not lead to a significant correlated response in LH receptor induction. Index selection for large litter size and small body weight increased ovulation rate (14%; P less than 0.01) and decreased LH receptor induction (72%; P less than 0.01), while index selection for small litter size and large body weight did not significantly alter either ovulation rate or LH receptor induction. LH receptor quantities in testes of males from the 5 lines did not exhibit the among-line profile which was observed in ovaries of females. These results confirm the role of ovulation rate in mediation of the positive genetic correlation between litter size and body weight in mice. Increased ovulation rate in mice selected for large litter size may be due to mechanisms associated with LH receptors as well as factors related to growth. In contrast, increased ovulation rate in mice selected for large body weight may be due exclusively to factors related to growth.  相似文献

The aim of the experiment was to detect polymorphism in the ESR gene to determine associations between the genotype and litter size in Polish Large White and Landrace sows. Reproductive traits investigated were: total number of piglets born (TNB), number of piglets born alive (NBA) and number of piglets weaned (TW). The polymorphism in ESR gene was detected using the PCR-RFLP method, with specific primers and the restriction enzyme AvaI. Two different alleles of ESR gene were identified: alleles A (0.71) and B (0.29). The relationship between the ESR genotypes and TBN, NBA and NW were analyzed. The analysis showed in first parity sows statistically significant (P < 0.01) differences between sows carrying different ESR genotypes. The analysis of ESR gene showed that sows with BB genotype had the largest litter size compared to AB and BB sows, but the difference was statistically not significant.  相似文献

Summary The nature of gene action and of maternal influence governing cottonseed oil attributes were determined with four lines, two each with high and low seed-oil percentage. For this purpose, P1, P2, F0, F1, F2 and alternative sets of BC1 and BC2 generations were analysed in six cross-combinations and their reciprocals. Marginal extents of heterosis for seed-oil percentage were noticeable in F1, with inbreeding depression in F2. Data from reciprocal backcrosses provided evidence in favour of maternal rather than cytoplasmic effects of seed-oil development. Relatively higher extents of heterosis, sizeable inbreeding depression and reciprocally unequal F2 averages were characteristic of the seed index trait, which often showed a reversal of effects from F1 to F2. Reverse reciprocal backcrosses exhibited some differences, including greater resemblance between the types, (A/B)A and (B/A)A, in addition to variable dose effects in seed index. Thus, the differences between F1 seed index values were not due to cytoplasmic influence. Positive heterotic effects for seed-oil index, especially among the backcrosses, ranged between 16.08% and 47.29% over midparent averages. Genetic component estimates from analysis of similar sets of crosses differing only in reciprocal backcrosses, and also from sets of reciprocal crosses between any two parental combinations, were inconsistent. Scaling tests detected presence of epistasis within and between a majority of cross-combinations. Despite reciprocal differences, additive gene effects for seed-oil percentage were significant in 7 out of 24 crosses, representing high x low, low x high and low x low seed-oil parents. Those were, however, accompanied by significant dominance effects of higher order. In crosses involving low seed-oil percentage parents SA1060 and SA229, all six components were detected significant, with opposite effects of dominance and dominance x dominance epistatic components. Significant additive components were also detected for seed index and seed-oil index in 7 and 5 out of 24 crosses, respectively. In the inheritance of seed index and seed-oil index, dominance effects were more important. Epistatic components of additive x additive, and to a lesser extent, those of dominant x dominant were found significant.  相似文献

The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the semen quality traits of purebred male rabbits and their crosses under subtropical Egyptian conditions. A full 3 x 3 diallel crossing was performed for producing the first generation progeny of New Zealand White (N), Flander (F) and Rex (R) breeds. The highest ejaculate volume (p< 0.05) and percentage of live sperms (p<0.01) with the lowest percentage of sperm cell morphological abnormalities (p<0.05) had been recorded in the NF bucks. Moreover, they possessed positive estimates of direct heterosis for ejaculate volume, mass motility (Mm), individual motility (Im) and sperm cell concentration (SCC). On the contrary, pH had negative estimates of direct heterosis in all crosses and their reciprocal. Semen pH was negatively correlated with SCC (r = -0.18), Mm (r = -0.13) and Im (r = -0.23). In conclusion, the superiority of crossbreeding was particularly obvious in the New Zealand White x Flander males, which cumulated heterosis and favorable maternal effects of the Flander dams.  相似文献

Small Tail Han (STH) sheep is a famous Chinese local breed and has perfect prolificacy performance, but it is inferior to imported mutton sheep breeds on meat production. In this study, six imported male sheep populations (White Suffolk, Black Suffolk, Texel, Dorper, South African Mutton Merino and East Friesian) were crossbred with STH female sheep respectively. The heterosis values of litter size, average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of crossbred sheep were analyzed for seeking the optimal cross. Meanwhile 28 microsatellite markers were used to measure the genetic distance between imported populations and STH population. Regression between the genetic distance and heterosis was analyzed for evaluating potential of microsatellite on predicting heterosis. Results showed a significant positive linear correlation (r = 0.892, P < 0.05) between heterosis of litter size and genetic distance D A of six crosses. This implied that these microsatellite markers had moderate potential to forecast heterosis of litter size in sheep. Results of this study also indicated that South African Mutton Merino and East Friesian sheep would be the optimal sire breeds for the litter size and might bring the greatest economic benefit in six imported populations; Suffolk sheep could be prior consideration as sire breeds when breeding objective focused on ADG. Finally these results provided valuable information for Chinese sheep industry.  相似文献

No gene-specific differences were found with respect to LH or testosterone pulsatile secretion (over 12 h), or in 12 hourly mean FSH concentrations in adult Booroola FF and ++ rams. Also, no differences between genotypes in the LH response to an injection of testosterone propionate, the FSH response to an infusion of bovine follicular fluid, or the testosterone response to injections of PMSG were noted. However, during the phase of seasonal testicular development, mean testosterone pulse amplitude (over 12 h) and the FSH response to 25 micrograms GnRH were higher in FF than in ++ rams (P less than 0.05); there were also significant effects of sire (P less than 0.05 in FF genotype only) and litter size (P less than 0.05) on testosterone pulse amplitude and GnRH-stimulated FSH release, respectively. During the breeding season, mean LH, but not FSH, concentrations were higher in FF than in ++ rams, after an injection of 0.5 micrograms GnRH; LH release was not affected by sire or litter size (P greater than 0.05). Long-term studies revealed that the FF rams were born in significantly larger litters, they weighed significantly less than ++ rams (P less than 0.05), and that bodyweight was significantly correlated (P less than 0.05) with litter size. There were no differences in testis size, and testis size was not significantly correlated with bodyweight. There was a strong tendency (P = 0.056) for overall mean FSH concentrations, measured weekly for 9 months, to be highest more often in FF than in ++ rams.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
