Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of treating seasonally anoestrous ewes with melatonin before ram introduction on reproductive response, and on LH secretion in anoestrous ewes induced to ovulate by rams.In Experiment 1, a total of 667 ewes from three flocks involving Merino (Flock 1, N = 149), Merino entrefino (Flock 2, N = 325) and Rasa Aragonesa (Flock 3, N = 203) breeds were used. Within each flock, ewes isolated from rams since the previous lambing were assigned at random to receive melatonin implants of Regulin (75, 175 and 105 in Merino, Merino entrefino and Rasa Aragonesa flocks, respectively) or to serve as untreated controls (74 in Merino, 150 in Merino entrefino and 98 in Rasa Aragonesa flocks). Fertile rams were introduced into all flocks 5 weeks after implantation in March (Flocks 1 and 2) or April (Flock 3), and remained with the ewes for a 50 day mating period. Percentage of ewes with luteal activity at ram introduction did not differ between melatonin treated and control ewes in any flock. There were no significant differences in either the mean interval from ram introduction to lambing or the distribution of lambing. Implantation with melatonin resulted in an improvement of prolificacy in all three flocks, although this only reached statistical significance in the Merino flock (1.15 vs. 1.03 in treated and control ewes, respectively, P < 0.05). Fertility was increased significantly (P < 0.05) in the Merino entrefino flock (64.5% in treated vs. 51.3% in control ewes). In Experiment 2, two trials were undertaken utilizing a total of 63 ewes. Trial 1 involved 24 mature Manchega ewes and Trial 2 involved 39 Merino ewe lambs. Half of the animals in each trial received a Regulin implant on 28 February (Trial 1) or 12 March (Trial 2) and the remaining half acted as controls. Rams were introduced 5 weeks after implantation and remained with the ewes for a 25 day period. In both trials, anoestrous ewes at ram introduction were bled at 20 min intervals for 3 h before and 5 h after ram introduction and then at 3 h intervals over the next 24 h for assessment of plasma concentrations of LH. Secretion of LH before or following introduction of rams was not affected by melatonin. Both treated and control anoestrous ewes in each trial responded to introduction of rams with an increase in the frequency of the LH pulses (P < 0.05), but no significant changes were detected in pulse amplitude or mean levels of LH. A preovulatory surge of LH was detected between 8 and 26 h after ram introduction, but neither mean interval from ram introduction to the peak of LH surge, nor the magnitude of the LH peak, was influenced by melatonin treatment. Results from this study show that: (1) melatonin implants administered during early seasonal anoestrus have the potential to improve reproductive performance in Spanish breeds of sheep, but the response is conditioned by breed, management system and environmental factors; (2) melatonin did not modify the secretion of LH in anoestrous ewes induced to ovulate by the ram effect under our experimental conditions.  相似文献

Garole, a prolific small sized sheep breed of India was introduced in the Mutton Project of the Institute during 1997 to explore the possibility of incorporating fecundity gene into Malpura (M) sheep of semi-arid region of Rajasthan. The data on reproduction and production traits of M and Garole × Malpura (GM) half-breds was used in the study to assess the improvement in evolved crossbred stock. The overall percent gain in prolificacy in GM was 52.38, which increased to 75.73 in third parity. The GM compared to M ewes also weaned more lambs per ewe lambed (1 versus 1.41). The lambing rate averaged 91.75 and 148.21% in M and GM ewes, respectively. The twin lambing percentage was only 4.71% in M flock while; it reached up to 51.10% in GM. Moreover, 5.72% of GM ewes produced triplets also. The genetic group non-significantly affect ewe efficiency (EE), but GM produced 3.3% more total lambs weight per ewe lambed at weaning and 6.15% more total lamb weight per ewe lambed at 6-month of age. The body weights at different ages of GM half-breds were lower (P < 0.01) compared to contemporary M lambs. The parity of ewes significantly affects body weight from birth weight to 12-month of age. The survivability of GM half-breds was almost at par with the local M sheep. Results revealed that the fecundity genes responsible for increasing prolificacy have been incorporated into the GM and it might prove a valuable germplasm towards evolving a new prolific strain of sheep. The crossing of Garole with M increased the ewe efficiency.  相似文献

In the autumn (October–December), Finnish Landrace ewes aged 1 year (yearling), 4–5 years (mature) and 7–8 years (older) were fed forages with no supplemented (control) or supplemented daily with 150 g (diet 150) or 300 g (diet 300) of concentrates per ewe in order to determine the effect of energy supply to initiate flushing on ewe productivity. Concurrently, in the summer (August–September), yearling and mature ewes were fed 0, 300 or 450 g of concentrates daily for 17 or 34 days. Concentrate supplement prior to and during mating had little effect on the live weight, however mature ewes gained weight in the summer. In the autumn, increasing proportion of concentrate in the diet reduced the length of the mating period in the yearling ewes (P=0.03) however, diet combination had no significant effect of age on conception. In August and early September, flushing did not hasten the onset of estrus and only 25% of the young ewes and 83% of the adult ewes were mated successfully. The flushing diet had no effect on the prolificacy in yearling and older ewes. In contrast, prolificacy and number of lambs weaned increased (P<0.05) for mature ewes on diet 150. In the autumn, there was a significant influence of flushing on the litter weight at birth and live weight gain from birth to weaning for older ewes however, diet 300 and the control were similar. Although litter weight at birth and weaning tended to be higher in the summer for ewes supplemented with concentrate for 34 days, the number of ewes required for a significant influence due to diet and length of flushing combination were not adequate. It was concluded that little is to be gained in lamb production by flushing ewes of the Finnish Landrace breed.  相似文献

In a flock of highly prolific Romney ewes obtained from industry flocks, one ewe (A281), with a production record of 33 lambs born in 11 lambings, produced a number of female descendants with high ovulation rates. The mode of inheritance of this trait was determined in a series of four progeny tests of male descendants of this ewe. The first progeny test produced strong evidence for a new major gene affecting ovulation rate in this family line; this finding was supported by two subsequent progeny tests. The fourth progeny test was designed to test the hypothesis that this gene is carried on the X chromosome. The results showed that six sons of a carrier ram did not inherit the gene, but it was passed on to three of his five maternal grandsons. This finding, together with evidence of genetic segregation in the progeny of carrier females, demonstrates for the first time the presence of a major gene for prolificacy specifically located on the X chromosome. The effect of the gene is to increase ovulation rate by about one additional egg per ewe.  相似文献

Plasma FSH and LH in prepubertal Booroola ewe lambs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Basal plasma concentrations (four 30-min samples) and GnRH-induced release of gonadotrophins were measured every 15 days between 30 and 90 days and at 110 days of age in Merino ewe lambs from the prolific Booroola ('B') flock (n = 18-23), the medium prolificacy ('T') flock (n = 14-20), and the 'O' flock (n = 4-8) of low prolificacy. At ages of 30 and 45 days B ewe lambs had mean basal plasma FSH concentrations of 145 and 122 ng/ml which were significantly higher (P less than 0.01) than those seen in T (45 and 53 ng/ml), and O (39 and 38 ng/ml) flock ewes. Between 60 and 110 days of age there were no significant differences between genotypes. The increment in FSH concentrations above basal levels induced by the subcutaneous injection of 100 micrograms synthetic GnRH was only significantly (P less than 0.05) greater in B than T and O genotype ewe lambs at 110 days of age but not at other ages. The basal plasma FSH differences between the B, T and O genotypes at 30 and 45 days of age were not consistently related to the size of litter in which lambs were born. At 30 days of age the mean plasma LH concentration of B, T, and O flock lambs were 2.6 +/- 0.5, 1.2 +/- 0.6 and 0.7 +/- 0.8 ng/ml respectively. These differences were not significant. At later ages there were also no significant differences between the genotypes with respect to basal LH, and the increase in LH induced by exogenous GnRH was always similar for the three genotypes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The reproductive performance (fertility, prolificacy and fecundity of totally confined sheep in a controlled breeding program at the Animal Research Centre (ARC) was analyzed to evaluate the effect of pregnant mares' serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) on ewes synchronized for estrus with fluorogestone acetate (FGA). PMSG did not significantly enhance reproductive performance. Fertility for ewes receiving 500 IU PMSG was 57% and for ewes not receiving PMSG it was 47%. Corresponding values for prolificacy were 2.4 and 2.2, and for fecundity, 144 and 103%. The reproductive performance was not affected by any of the other factors (flock, strain, lighting regime, ram age or reproductive status of the ewe) indigenous to the controlled breeding program for sheep housed in total confinement.  相似文献

At lambing, ewes (Ovis aries) tend to isolate themselves from the flock and this is believed to be beneficial to the early relationship with their young. Later, they return to the flock and lambs progressively interact with other conspecifics. This study focused on the importance of isolation and socio-spatial factors on maternal recognition in lambs. All the ewes gave birth in individual 2 m2 pens and lambs were able to interact freely with their mothers. A first experiment investigated the role of isolation: INT1 lambs could progressively interact with other mothers and young in a pen which was increased in surface area from birth to 24 h (0–6 h: 1 ewe, 1 litter, 2 m2; 6–12 h: 2 ewes, 2 litters, 4 m2; 12–24 h: 4 ewes, 4 litters, 8 m2); ISO lambs remained in small pens (2 m2) and only with their mothers for 24 h. The lambs were submitted to a 5 min choice test between their own mothers and an alien ewe. At 12 h INT1 lambs, unlike ISO lambs, showed a clear preference for their mothers. ISO lambs still did not show any maternal preference at 24 h. The second experiment investigated the relative importance of social interactions while keeping the same space allowance for the two groups: INT2 lambs as described for INT1 in Experiment 1, and SPA lambs that remained isolated from the flock with their mothers but had the same increase in pen surface area as INT2 lambs. Both INT2 and SPA lambs displayed a preference for their own mothers at 12 h but INT2 lambs did so more rapidly. Our data also suggest that INT1 and INT2 lambs chose their own mothers at a distance. These results demonstrate that progressively increasing social interactions with flock members other than the mother facilitates the establishment of a preference for the mother in lambs. Increasing space allowance only also seems to have facilitating effects. This suggests that a rich socio-spatial environment from birth has beneficial effects on the development of filial bonding.  相似文献

Increased ewe prolificacy and lambing rates, under certain conditions of sheep husbandry, may be economical and desirable. This paper reports on the effects of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and phenobarbital (PB) on fertility and lambing rate in fat-tailed Ghezel sheep. One-hundred and five cyclic ewes (1.5 to 7.5 years of age) were randomly allotted to seven groups. Estrus was synchronized with two intramuscular injections of a prostaglandin F2 analogue (PGF2), eight days apart. Four groups were randomly assigned to the hCG and three groups to PB experiments. Twenty-four hours after the second injection of PGF2, the ewes in four groups were injected (i.m.), either with 1 ml normal saline (control) or with 125, 250 or 500 IU hCG. Prolificacy of the ewes which conceived at first estrus increased in ewes receiving 500 IU of hCG, as compared with control group (an increase of 0.5 lamb/ewe) but fertility and lambing rate decreased in hCG-treated groups (P<0.05). Nine days after the second injection of PGF2, ewes in the three remaining groups were orally fed empty gelatin capsules (control), 1.0 or 1.5 g of PB per day until the next estrus. Prolificacy and lambing rate increased (P<0.05) in ewes which received 1.0 g of PB (1.57 and 146.5%, respectively), as compared with the control groups (1.17 and 100.3%, respectively). It is concluded that daily feeding of 1.0 g of PB from day 7 of the estrous cycle until the next estrus period is an effective method of increasing lambing rate. hCG also increases the prolificacy, but it greatly decreases fertility and lambing rates. Since hCG is more convenient to administer on a flock basis, further experiments to improve its efficacy are warranted.  相似文献

This study involved records on fertility, prolificacy, multiple birth, fecundity, body weight and age at breeding of 2380 ewe lambs from 432 sires of three synthetic strains developed at the Animal Research Centre, Ottawa, Canada. Ewes were divided into two equal flocks which were bred to lamb alternately at 4-month intervals under an 8-month breeding cycle. Lambs were housed indoors, in a controlled environment, on expanded metal mesh floors in windowless barns and were bred in January, May and September at the end of a period of short days. Ewes that lambed were generally heavier and slightly older at breeding as were ewes that lambed to mating at the synchronised estrus. Though not significant, trends demonstrating seasonal differences in the heritabilities of all reproductive traits were observed. Paternal half-sib estimates showed fertility, prolificacy, multiple births and fecundity were non-heritable in ewes lambing to matings at the synchronized estrus. Heritability estimates for prolificacy and multiple birth were 0.22 and 0.13, respectively, in ewes lambing to matings at the synchronized plus follow-up estrus, suggesting that slow genetic progress can be achieved in these traits from selection. Heritability estimates ranged from 0.03 to 0.22 for body weight and from 0.28 to 0.54 for age at breeding. Ewes that lambed showed lower values than all ewes exposed. Phenotypic correlations between reproductive traits and either body weight or age at breeding were low and ranged from 0.04 to 0.09. There were higher estimates of genetic correlation of prolificacy (and multiple birth) with either body weight or age at breeding in ewes lambing to matings at the combined estruses. Indirect selection of ewe lambs based on age and body weight at breeding may be an effective alternative to direct selection for genetic improvement of prolificacy and multiple birth.  相似文献

Background

The major prolificacy gene FecL was first described in the Lacaune sheep meat breed Ovi-Test in 1998. A few studies estimated the effect of this gene on prolificacy but little data is available. In 2010, the Ovi-Test cooperative started genotyping FecL in all of their replacement ewe lambs. Thanks to the large amount of genotyping data that is available now, gene effects on litter size and other relevant traits can be estimated more accurately.

Methods

Our study included 5775 ewes genotyped since 2010 and 1025 sires genotyped since 2002. Performances and pedigrees were extracted from the French national database for genetic evaluation and research. Analysis of the effect of the gene on different traits was based on linear or threshold genetic animal models using the ASReml software.

Results

The female population was composed of 71% homozygous wild type ewes (++), 27% heterozygous ewes for the FecL mutation (L+) and 2% homozygous mutant (LL) ewes. On average, L + ewes produced 0.5 more lambs per lambing than ++ ewes. The FecL gene not only affected the mean litter size but also its variability, which was lower for ++ than for L + ewes. Fertility after insemination was higher for L + ewes than for ++ ewes. Lambs from ++ dams were heavier (+300 g) than the lambs of L + dams and the mortality of twin lambs born from ++ dams was lower than those from L + dams. In addition, bias in estimated breeding values for prolificacy when ignoring the existence of this major gene was quantified.

Conclusions

The effect of the FecL gene on prolificacy was estimated more accurately and we show that this gene affects both the mean and the variability of litter size and other traits. This paper also shows that ignoring the existence of this major gene in genetic evaluation of prolificacy can lead to a large overestimation of polygenic breeding values.  相似文献

A new naturally occurring mutation in the fecundity gene BMP15 in the Rasa Aragonesa sheep breed (Ovis aries) has been found to affect prolificacy. This mutation (FecXR allele) is a deletion of 17 base pairs that leads to an altered amino acid sequence, and this alteration increases prolificacy in heterozygous ewes but causes sterility in homozygous ewes. Selection of repository lambs with the FecXR allele increases rates of twins and multiple lambing and thereby also increases the probability of lambing freemartins that will become sterile. In this sense, an accurate, reliable, and quick method was developed by duplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for sex, amplifying an ovine-specific Y chromosome repetitive fragment, and BMP15 genotype determination in replacement ewe lambs. The BMP15 fragment served as an internal control of the amplification and detected the FecXR allele, avoiding a false negative and then a mistake in freemartin detection. This assay uncovered 6 freemartin females among 195 replacement ewes from 7 different commercial flocks and 1 experimental flock. Furthermore, 1554 rams from 64 commercial flocks were also analyzed to identify FecXR rams. This analysis identified 103 rams hemizygous for the FecXR allele and 1 heterozygous ram. Because this gene is located on the X chromosome, this heterozygous animal is a freemartin ram that is co-amplifying the DNA from XX and XY lymphocytes. These results confirm the usefulness of this multiplex PCR assay for detecting phenotypically sexed females, freemartins, and the BMP15 genotype to detect highly prolific ewes in commercial flocks and to assist breeders in selection of repository lambs.  相似文献

Although the UK is the largest lamb meat producer in Europe, there are limited data available on sheep flock performance and on how sheep farmers manage their flocks. The aims of this study were to gather evidence on the types of disease control practices implemented in sheep flocks, and to explore husbandry factors associated with flock productivity. A questionnaire focusing on farm characteristics, general husbandry and flock health management was carried out in 648 farms located in the UK over summer 2016. Abattoir sales data (lamb sales over 12 months) was compared with the number of breeding ewes on farm to estimate flock productivity (number of lambs sold for meat per 100 ewes per farm per year). Results of a multivariable linear regression model, conducted on 615 farms with complete data, indicated that farms vaccinating ewes against abortion and clostridial agents and administering a group 4/5 anthelmintic to ewes (as recommended by the Sustainable Control of Parasites in Sheep Initiative) during quarantining had a greater flock productivity than farms not implementing these actions (P<0.01 and 0.02, respectively). Flocks with maternal breed types had higher productivity indexes compared with flocks with either pure hill or terminal breeds (P<0.01). Farms weighing lambs during lactation had greater productivity than those not weighing (P<0.01). Importantly, these actions were associated with other disease control practices, for example, treating individual lame ewes with an antibiotic injection, weaning lambs between 13 and 15 weeks of age and carrying out faecal egg counts, suggesting that an increase in productivity may be associated with the combined effect of these factors. This study provides new evidence on the positive relationship between sheep flock performance and disease control measures and demonstrates that lamb sales data can be used as a baseline source of information on flock performance and for farm benchmarking. Further research is needed to explore additional drivers of flock performance.  相似文献

The objective was to determine if transrectal ultrasonography for determination of pregnancy in restrained ewes increases embryonic/fetal death or loss of pregnancy. Ten flocks (N=873 ewes) bred in either the estrous or anestrous season were randomized, into control (C) or examined (E) groups within flock. Examined ewes were placed in a tilting squeeze chute and scanned by one of three operators for pregnancy by transrectal ultrasonography once between Days 25 and 100 post-breeding. Control ewes were not subjected to handling in the squeeze chute or pregnancy diagnosis. Two operators counted embryos in E ewes in six flocks. There were no differences between E and C ewes in percent ewes lambing or lambing rate on a per flock basis. Prolificacy per flock was greater in E ewes (P=0.05; 1.53 versus 1.60, C and E, respectively) than in C ewes. Eighty-five percent of exposed ewes lambed in the estrous season, while only 62% of ewes lambed in the anestrous season (P=0.05). Overall prolificacy did not differ with season (1.60 versus 1.53), and there was no season by treatment interaction for any variable tested. Losses averaged 0.02 per E ewe exposed in the estrous season and 0.20 in the anestrous season (P<0.05). Examined ewes in this study had similar pregnancy and lambing rates to C ewes in the same flocks and prolificacy was slightly greater. Based on these data, the combination of transrectal ultrasonography with restraint is safe for pregnancy diagnosis in ewes.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted in a large flock of Berrichon purebred and Romanov × Berrichon F1 crossbred ewes. In experiment 1, 157 ewe lambs were placed in six groups according to season of mating and maternal breed. Within each group equal numbers of females were treated with either medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP) or fluorogestone acetate (FGA)-impregnated sponges for 14 days; dosage of PMSG at the time of sponge removal was 500 and 300 I.U. respectively for pure and crossbred. In experiment 2, 111 dry yearling ewes of the Berrichon breed were involved, of which 35, 51 and 25 had either a short lambing to treatment interval (approximately 3 months), a long lambing to treatment interval (approximately 6 months), or were primiparous or nulliparous. They were also treated either with MAP or FGA.The conception rates were extremely high (overall near 86%) in ewe lambs and not significantly affected by seasons or breeds or treatments. Prolificacy and number of lambs per ewe mated were higher in the F1 crossbred group than in pure Berrichon females (respectively 1.91 vs. 1.34 lambs/mated ewe). No significant difference between the two progestagens could be observed for any of the productivity criteria. Fertility was equally satisfactory in yearlings (overall near 85%) irrespective of the interval between lambing and mating. However, the fertility of the nulliparous ewes (those that failed to conceive as ewe lambs) was significantly lower (72%). The number of lambs per ewe mated was 1.78 in yearlings with a 6-month interval from lambing to mating but was not significantly different from the numbers recorded in the other two groups (1.37 and 1.36). As in experiment 1, there was no difference in the results obtained after either of the two progestagen treatments. In conclusion, progestagen treatment has been shown in both ewe lambs and yearlings to be a very effective means of increasing lamb production in large flocks. This was achieved in ewe lambs regardless of the season and, in dry yearling ewes, regardless of the interval from lambing to mating in the anoestrous season.  相似文献

Effective shelter has been demonstrated to reduce neonatal lamb mortality rates during periods of inclement weather. Periods of high wind speed and rainfall have been shown to influence shelter usage; however, it is not yet known how ewe factors such as breed, age and body condition score influence shelter-seeking behaviour. This study, conducted on a working upland farm in the UK, examined impact of artificial shelter on the biological and climatic factors that influence peri-parturient ewe behaviour. Pregnant ewes (n = 147) were randomly allocated between two adjacent fields which were selected for their similarity in size, topography, pasture management, orientation to the prevailing wind and available natural shelter. In one field, three additional artificial shelters were installed to increase the available shelter for ewes, this field was designated the Test field; no additional artificial shelter was provided in the second field which was used as the Control field. Individual ewes were observed every 2 h between 0800 and 1600 for 14 continuous days to monitor their location relative to shelter. Ewe breed (Aberfield and Highlander), age (2–8 years) and body condition score were considered as explanatory variables to explain flock and individual variance in shelter-seeking behaviour and the prevalence of issues which required the intervention of the shepherd, termed ‘shepherding problems’. Any ewe observed with dystocia, a dead or poor vigour lamb or who exhibited mismothering behaviour was recorded as a shepherding problem. The prevalence of these shepherding problems which necessitate human intervention represents arguably the most critical limiting factor for the successful management of commercial sheep flocks in outdoor lambing systems. Overall, ewes in the Test field with access to additional artificial shelter experienced fewer shepherding problems than those in the Control field (P < 0.05). A significant breed effect was also observed, with Highlander ewes more likely to seek shelter than Aberfield ewes (P < 0.001), and experiencing significantly fewer shepherding interventions (P < 0.05). These findings demonstrate the substantial and significant benefits to animal welfare and productivity that can be achieved through the provision of shelter in commercial, upland, outdoor lambing systems in the UK.  相似文献

Sheep meat producers derive the majority of income from sales of weaned lambs, determined by flock conception rates, litter size, and lamb survival. Field data from commercial flocks can inform sensitivity analyses of the effect of litter size on flock productivity, feed demand, and gross margin. This study adapted an established bio-economic model of a flock of breeding ewes informed by statistical relationships (from linear models) between flock litter size (lambs born per ewe lambing) and production factors (such as flock barren rate, litter birth type and lamb birth weight) identified using 156 145 animal records from the Irish national sheep breeding database. Sensitivity analyses were undertaken to investigate the effects of flock litter size on flock production, feed demand, and gross margin. Results showed that as flock litter size increased, the proportion of lambs born as multiples increased, with 14 % of lambs born as singles when flock litter size was 2.2 lambs born per ewe lambing. Flock gross margin increased from €2 205 to €7 730 as litter size increased from 1.0 to 2.0 lambs born per ewe lambing. As litter size increased from 1.0 to 2.2 lambs born per ewe lambing, flock gross margin increased linearly by, on average, €52 per 0.01 increase in litter size. At a litter size of > 2.2 lambs born per ewe lambing, flock gross margin increased on average €12 per 0.01 increase in litter size. At a litter size of 2.2 lambs born per ewe lambing, flock efficiency (at 65.0 kg of lamb weaned per ewe presented for breeding), weaning rate (at 1.5 lambs weaned per ewe presented for breeding; not including excess lambs from large litters sold within a week after birth and thus not weaned on-farm), and gross margin (at €8 500) began to plateau. The results indicate lower marginal returns in gross margin at very high flock litter size, due to the lower value of additional lambs born as triplets and quadruplets compared with single- and twin-born lambs. However, the diminishing economic returns occurred at higher flock litter size than are currently biologically achieved in most flocks. Quantification from this analysis demonstrates how the value of increasing the number of lambs born changes at very high flock litter size, which can inform the priorities and performance benchmarking for international sheep meat production industries.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of age and breed on the reproductive performance and lamb output of crossbred hill ewes relative to purebred Scottish Blackface (BF). BF ewes were compared alongside Swaledale (SW) × BF, North Country Cheviot (CH) × BF, Lleyn (LL) × BF and Texel (T) × BF ewes on six commercial hill farms across Northern Ireland, on which all the ewes were born and reared. Ewes were mated to a range of sire breeds, balanced across breeds, for up to five successive breeding seasons. Mature live weight of adult BF, SW × BF, CH × BF, LL × BF and T × BF ewes was 52.8, 54.9, 60.3, 55.6 and 58.6 kg (P < 0.001), respectively. Compared with the pure BF, the number of lambs born per ewe lambed was higher with LL × BF and SW × BF (P < 0.05), whereas the number of lambs weaned per ewe lambed was greater for LL × BF and T × BF (P < 0.01). Total litter weight at birth of all the crossbred ewes was heavier (P < 0.01) than the pure BF, except in primiparous 2-year-old ewes. Lambs born to CH × BF and T × BF dams were 0.24 to 0.35 kg heavier at birth (P < 0.01) than the other ewe breeds, whereas lambs born to CH × BF, LL × BF and T × BF dams were, on average, 1.7, 1.3 and 1.5 kg, respectively, heavier (P < 0.01) at weaning than those from BF dams due to their higher (P < 0.05) average daily gain. Compared with the pure BF, total weaned lamb output per ewe lambed was 3.7, 4.8, 6.7 and 5.4 kg heavier (P < 0.05) for SW × BF, CH × BF, LL × BF and T × BF, respectively. However, as a result of the heavier live weight of the crossbred ewes, production efficiency (lamb output per kilogram live weight (W) and lamb output per kilogram metabolic live weight (W0.75)) was higher (P < 0.001) for LL × BF ewes only. For all ewe breeds, litter size at birth per ewe lambed, total lamb birth weight per ewe lambed and litter size at weaning increased (P < 0.001) with age up to 5 years, but decreased in 6-year-old ewes. Average lamb weaning weight and total weaned lamb output per ewe lambed increased (P < 0.001) with age up to 4 years . Production efficiency of the 6-year-old ewes was lower (P < 0.01) than the younger ewes. This study shows that adopting a flock replacement policy based on crossing BF ewes with LL, SW, T and CH sires can lead to significant improvements in the productivity of hill flocks.  相似文献

Ovulation rates were measured in 547 progeny of 24 rams in a Romney flock with a long history of high prolificacy. These sheep were from the same family line and the distribution of ovulation rates suggests the presence of a segregating major gene (FecW) that increases prolificacy. The phenotype differs from those previously described for major genes affecting prolificacy in sheep. The putative gene shows autosomal inheritance and one copy increases ovulation rate by 0.8-1.0 eggs per ewe ovulating. To date, we have found no evidence of infertility among putative homozygous ewes, as described in some autosomal major genes for prolificacy.  相似文献

Ovulation rate, in mixed-age groups of prolific and non-prolific ewe breed types, after administration of a range of doses of PMSG (0, 375, 750 and 1500 i.u.) during the follicular phase of the oestrous cycle, were compared in Ireland, Morocco and New Zealand. The ewes in Ireland and Morocco were from the Finnish Landrace and Galway, and D'Man and Timhadite breeds, respectively. In New Zealand Booroola Merino x Romney ewes which had been previously identified as heterozygous carriers (F+) of the Booroola high fecundity gene and purebred Romneys were used to represent the prolific and non-prolific genotypes respectively; in addition a group of Booroola Merino x Romney non-carriers (++) of the major gene were also included for comparison. Ovulation rate at the oestrus which preceded stimulation with PMSG was also measured in all animals. In all 3 locations the ewes of the prolific genotype had a greater ovulation rate after PMSG stimulation than did the non-prolific controls. However, this association between prolificacy and response to PMSG was removed when ovulation rate after PMSG was transformed by dividing by the ovulation rate observed before PMSG administration. Despite the differences in the genetic basis of their high prolificacy the pattern of response to PMSG over the range of dosages used was similar in Finnish Landrace, D'Man and Booroola Merino x Romney (F+) ewes and all breeds had means of about 10 ovulations in response to 1500 i.u. PMSG. Amongst the non-prolific breeds, the Timhadite was the most responsive to PMSG although it had the lowest natural ovulation rate.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The levels of plasma LH and FSH were measured in serial blood samples taken at 15-min intervals for 6 h from ewes that had remained fertile after grazing oestrogenic pasture (clover-fertile ewes), from ewes that were permanently affected by clover disease (clover-infertile ewes) and from normal ewes. Two flocks of ewes from different locations were studied. In flock 1, tonic LH secretion (total area under the curve of LH concentration versus time, 1 area unit = 1 ng ml-1 x 1 h) was significantly (P < 0.05) greater in clover-infertile ewes (10.4 area units) during anoestrus than in ewes that had remained fertile after prolonged grazing of oestrogenic clover (5.4 area units). Tonic LH and FSH secretions during the bleeding season and FSH secretion during anoestrus were not significantly different. In flock 2, LH levels during the breeding season were significantly (P < 0.05) elevated in clover-infertile ewes (10.9 area units) compared to normal ewes (5.4 area units) that had never grazed oestrogenic clover. LH secretion in clover-infertile ewes (7.8 area units) was intermediate to that found in infertile and control ewes. Concentrations of FSH, progesterone and ovarian vein oestradiol-17 beta (E2) during the breeding season were similar in the three groups. In another experiment, the positive feedback release of LH following administration of E2 (12.5, 25 or 50 micrograms per ewe) was measured in anoestrous ewes of flock 2. Significantly (P < 0.01) more clover-infertile ewes demonstrated a positive feedback effect than control ewes when given 12.5 micrograms E2 but not when given higher doses. The elevation of LH secretion in permanently affected clover-infertile ewes is inconsistent with the hypothesis that the hypothalamo-pituitary axis of these ewes is less responsive to the negative feedback effect of oestrogen. Furthermore, the patency of the positive feedback loop is consistent with the ability to ovulate.  相似文献
