Two new species of the genus Amphinemura Ris from China are described and illustrated, i.e. A. annulata Du & Ji, sp. n. from Zhejiang, Shanxi, Shaanxi and Guizhou Province, and A. lingulata Du & Wang, sp. n. from Shaanxi and Sichuan Province. A. annulata is similar to A. tricintusidens Wang & Zhu in having an apical cavity of the epiproct, but the epiproct ventral sclerite and the median paraproct lobe of the two species are different. A. lingulata is related to A. didyma Zhu & Yang in having the similar epiproct, but they differ mostly in paraproct median and outer lobes. 相似文献

Development and fate of embryonic membranes in the silverfish Lepisma saccharina was examined throughout embryogenesis. The amnioserosal folds first arise as serosal folds that are completed by the later addition of the amnion from the embryo's margins as in archaeognaths. The close link between production of the amnion and formation of the folds should not be assigned to Dicondylia but to Pterygota as an autapomorphy. During fold formation, folding of embryonic membranes beneath the embryo is less extensive and the ventral cupping of the embryo plays a larger role comparable to that occurring in archaeognath embryos. In L. saccharina, the embryonic membrane pore (the amniopore) varies in its manner of closure, either by complete fusion of serosal folds or by formation of a serosal cuticular plug between them as in archaeognaths. Although, in many aspects of its embryogenesis, L. saccharina retains the primitiveness of archaeognaths, its amnioserosal folds persist and are well integrated into its embryogenesis as the amnioserosal fold-amniotic cavity system is established and as occurs in many pterygote embryos; this may be thus regarded as an autapomorphy of Dicondylia. 相似文献

Wolbachia is the most widespread bacterial endosymbiont in insects. It is responsible for a variety of reproductive alterations of the hosts. Wolbachia is transmitted through the germline from mother to offspring and, in rare cases, between individuals. This implies that acquired properties (through symbiosis with Wolbachia) can become heritable. We investigated the transovarial inheritance of Wolbachia in two phylogenetically distant insects, Drosophila melanogaster and Zyginidia pullula. We detected in both systems bacteriocyte-like cells, densely packed with Wolbachia endosymbionts, at the tip of the ovarioles. Bacteriocytes are cells specialized to harbour bacteria, typical of mutualistic insect symbiosis. Our observations of bacteriocyte-like cells harbouring Wolbachia in the ovary emphasize the plasticity of the female reproductive system of insects, which maintains its function while some cells are densely colonized by bacteria. In summary, there is evidence from different insects that bacteria which behave as parasites of reproduction are harboured by cells resembling bacteriocytes, which appear to mediate transmission of the bacteria to the progeny. It seems a valid hypothesis that the bacteriocyte-like cells that we observed are not the result of a co-evolution of host and symbiont, considering that Wolbachia is not an obligatory symbiont in Drosophila and Zyginidia. 相似文献

The stonefly genus Tyrrhenoleuctra includes species living in western Mediterranean temporary freshwater streams, sometimes also at sea level, a very unusual habitat for most Plecoptera. Traditional morphological approaches proved unsuccessful in drawing both taxonomic and phylogenetic patterns, thus hampering discussion of biogeographical patterns for this interesting group. We aimed at: (a) assessing the taxonomic status of populations of Tyrrhenoleuctra covering the geographic range of the genus; (b) studying the phylogenetic relationships among the recognized species; and (c) describing biogeographic patterns. We used phylogenetic analyses to infer the phylogenetic history of this group of stoneflies based on a combined data set of 1666 bp including fragments of the 12S ribosomal (12S) and cytochrome oxidase I (CO‐I) mtDNA genes, with maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods. Two main clades have been identified: a Sardo‐Corsican one, including Tyrrhenoleuctra zavattarii, and an Ibero‐Maghrebian one including four lineages of unkown taxonomic rank from the Balearic Islands (Maiorca), from northern Africa (Ceuta) and southernmost Spain (Algeciras), and a complex preliminarily referred herein to T. minuta (Klapálek, 1901), which includes two lineages, one from Cordoba, and one from Sierra de Grazalema (El Cerro) and Portugal (Tellhares) respectively. Dating the nodes by fixing the split of the Ibero‐Maghrebian clade from the Sardo‐Corsican one at 29 million years ago (Mya), yielded dates referring to the major geological events in the Mediterranean basin. Estimated molecular evolutionary rates ranged from 0.02–0.09% per million years (my) in the T. zavattarii lineages, to 0.2–0.7% per MY in the Ibero‐Maghrebian clade. The phylogenetic pattern emerged from the present study is congruent with the known paleo‐history of the western Mediterranean basin, with the divergence of the two main Tyrrhenoleuctra lineages corresponding to the split of the Sardo‐Corsican microplate from the Iberian block. Vicariance events have characterized the history of this stonefly group along its entire biogeographical history. Surprisingly low evolutionary rates, previously supposed by Fochetti (1991, 1994) and Fochetti et al. (2004) based on nuclear markers (allozymes), have been herein found also in mitochondrial markers. 相似文献

The stonefly genus Siphonoperla Zwick, 1967 (Chloroperlidae) ranges from the Atlas Mountains of North Africa, throughout Europe and east to the Lesser Caucasus Mountains in Armenia. Systematic relationships within the genus are unknown. We provide the first molecular phylogenetic reconstruction of the genus, based on sequence variation of 1348 bp of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene and relate this phylogeny to a few key morphological features as well as zoogeographical perspectives. A total of 15 taxa (32 individuals), including four outgroup species (Chloroperla Newman, 1836 and Xanthoperla Zwick, 1967 ) were screened. Monophyly of Siphonoperla, as well as each purported taxon was supported, with net pairwise distances ranging from 0.7% to 13.7%. Within‐taxon variability ranged from 0% to 6.2%, whereby the upper value relates to Siphonoperla torrentium Pictet, 1841 represented in our sample by three allopatric subspecific taxa. These taxa, displayed as a polytomy with an estimated time to the most recent common ancestor of about 5.4 Myr, are also shown to have distinct genitalia. These data could be used to support a species‐level distinction for the three subspecific taxa. Siphonoperla ranged from 13% (Xanthoperla) to 16.2% (Chloroperla) divergent from the outgroup genera. The recently described Siphonoperla ottomoogi, Graf, 2008 from Austria is not closely related to the sympatric Siphonoperla montana Pictet, 1841 and is a minimum of 7.8% divergent from congenerics, supporting its status as a micro‐endemic relict surviving on the edge of Alpine glaciation throughout the Pleistocene. Overall, the genus shows the highest levels of diversification in the Mediterranean and Southeast regions whereby at least some of the species found in Central Europe today may have persisted there in peri‐glacial refugia throughout the Pleistocene. 相似文献

Histological and histochemical methods have been employed to study the formation and growth of the exoskeleton in relation to the moulting cycle of the crab Menippe rumphii (Fabricius). In the premoult condition the epidermal cells secrete a two-layered cuticle. Later these layers are widened by the secretions coming from the reserve cells, tegumental glands, and the Leydig cells. The fully formed cuticle of the intermoult crab is divisible into four layers, epicuticle, exocuticle, mesocuticle, and endocuticle.Histochemical observations on different cells have revealed that the tegumental glands secrete both neutral and acid mucopolysaccharides. The reserve cells are positive to PAS, BPB, Sudan Black B and Alizarin Red S techniques indicating the presence of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and mineral calcium. The Leydig cells are loaded with enzymes, including alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, lipase, and phenoloxidase. Other histochemical tests have been employed to investigate the formation of different layers of the cuticle. 相似文献

Larvae of Lucilia cuprina, fed toxic levels of α-methyl DOPA (or other DOPA decarboxylase inhibitors) during the first or second instar, die at the completion of the next moult, soon after exposing their new cuticles. In electron micrographs of newly synthesised cuticle from these treated larvae, the ultrastructure of the lipid-rich outer epicuticle layer appears to be abnormal. This newly formed cuticle of the treated larvae is apparently defective in its role as a water permeability barrier (compared with that of normal larvae), since it permits the free movement of water in both directions. Thus, treated larvae die most probably as a direct result of dehydration. Larvae fed toxic levels of α-methyl DOPA can be rescued from death by simultaneously adding N-acetyldopamine (the cuticular sclerotizing agent) to the food. The rescued larvae are apparently normal in all respects. This suggests that sclerotization is required for the formation of a normal outer epicuticle. Diflubenzuron, which is known to inhibit chitin deposition in the cuticles of a number of different species of insect, also apparently affects chitin deposition in the larval cuticle of L. cuprina. Thus, in electron micrographs of cuticle from larvae fed toxic levels of diflubenzuron the ultrastructure of the chitin-containing endocuticle layer appears to be abnormal. 相似文献

The extensible cuticle of Argas (P.) robertsi is tuberculate and deeply folded when the tick is unfed but expands rapidly during feeding. During this expansion the epicuticle becomes less convoluted and the underlying endocuticle stretches but there is no significant alteration in thickness. However, the stretched cuticle has taken on a more open structure. Increase in surface area is restricted to a blister-like expansion because of an inextensible lateral suture which separates the dorsal and ventral surfaces. The cuticle is very hydrophobic, contains 9.9% chitin in the female and 8.9% in the male and the cuticular proteins are largely basic. The cuticle has similar properties to that of the ixodid tick Boophilus microplus but differs from it in fine structure. These differences appear to be related to the time sequence of cuticle synthesis and deposition and to the cycle of expansion and contraction which takes place each time A. (P.) robertsi feeds. 相似文献

Two new Neoperla species (Neoperla mesospina, Neoperla latispina) are described from the adult male stage from the Jinhuacha Nature Reserve, Guangxi of China. Few studies have considered whether cryptic coloration is protective. As a model predator/prey system, the visually foraging fish rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, and the stonefly nymph were used to examine cryptic coloration and anti-predator behaviour of prey. In both the laboratory and field, stonefly nymphs selected dark substrates on which they were inconspicuous and therefore less vulnerable to predation by trout. In the laboratory, substrate colour selection by nymphs ceased approximately 2 h after the lights were turned off but resumed within 1 h of lights being turned on. Stoneflies also selected dark patches, rather than light, on the surface of multi-coloured substrate. Colour selection behaviour was not different in the presence versus absence of trout. Stoneflies perceived colour through a combination of visual input from their compound eyes and oceli. 相似文献

We present the complete mitogenome of a stonefly, Cryptoperla stilifera Sivec (Plecoptera; Peltoperlidae). The mitogenome was a circular molecule consisting of 15,633 nucleotides, 37 genes and a A + T-rich region. C. stilifera mitogenome was similar to Pteronarcys princeps mitogenome (Plecoptera; Pteronarcyidae). All transfer RNA genes (tRNAs) had typical cloverleaf secondary structures except for trnSer (AGN), where the stem-loop structure of the dihydrouridine (DHU) arm was missing. The A + T-rich region of C. stilifera had two stem-loops and each had two interlink. Three conserved sequence blocks (CSBs) were present in the A + T-rich regions of C. stilifera, Peltoperla tarteri and Peltoperla arcuata. Moreover, many polynucleotide stretches (Poly N, N = A, T and C) in the A + T-rich region of C. stilifera Phylogenetic relationships of Polyneopteran species were constructed based on the nucleotide sequences of 13 protein coding genes (PCGs). Both maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) analyses supported Grylloblattodea as the sister group to Plecoptera + Dermaptera and Embiidina and Phasmatodea as sister groups. 相似文献

From analyses of monthly length frequency distributions of stonefly (Plecoptera) nymphs from stream riffles, two types of univoltine life cycles (Hynes 1961, classification) were observed: slow seasonal forIsoperla transmarina, Isoperla signata, Isogenoides olivaceus, andAllocapnia rickerii, and fast seasonal forProstoia similis. The Perlodidae stoneflies (Isoperla andIsogenoides) showed greatest propensities to drift near the end of their life cycles. The Bittacidae are unique in Mecoptera for their adults being predaceous. However, their mouthparts have not been well documented for functional morphology to date. Here, we investigated the mouthpart morphology of the hangingflies Bittacus planus Cheng and Terrobittacus implicatus (Huang & Hua) using scanning electron microscopy. The mouthparts are of the mandibulate type and situated at the tip of an elongated rostrum. The labrum is greatly elongated, roughly twice as long as the subquadrate clypeus. The epipharynx is furnished with a row of basiconic sensilla arranged evenly as a median band extending from the apex to the base. The mandibles are slender and elongated, bearing a sharp lateral and a small mesal tooth. The maxillae are well developed, each consisting of a partially sclerotized cardo and a stipes, a hirsute galea and a lacinia, and a five-segmented maxillary palp. The sensillar pattern on the distal segment of the maxillary palp differs slightly between the two bittacid species. The labium is composed of a postmentum, a prementum, and a pair of two-segmented labial palps. The feeding mechanism of bittacids is briefly discussed in combination with the mouthpart morphology and their feeding habits. 相似文献

The egg structure and outline of the embryonic development of Metallyticus splendidus of one of the basal Mantodea representatives, Metallyticidae, were described in the present study. The results obtained were compared with those from the previous studies, to reconstruct and discuss the groundplan of Mantodea and Dictyoptera. In M. splendidus, the egg is spheroidal, it has a convex ventral side at the center in which numerous micropyles are grouped, and it possesses a conspicuous hatching line in its anterior half. These are the groundplan features of mantodean eggs and the “grouped micropyles in the ventral side of the egg” are regarded as an apomorphic groundplan feature of Dictyoptera. A small circular embryo is formed by a simple concentration of blastoderm cells, which then undergoes embryogenesis of the typical short germ band type. Blastokinesis is of the “non-reversion type” and the embryo keeps its original superficial position and original orientation throughout embryonic development. During the middle stages of development, the embryo undergoes rotation around the egg's anteroposterior axis. These features are a part of the groundplan of Mantodea. It is uncertain whether sharing of the “non-reversion type” of blastokinesis by Mantodea and blaberoidean Blattodea can be regarded as homology or homoplasy. 相似文献

To add to our understanding of dendrocoelid spermatozoa and to describe additional phylogenetic characters, the ultrastructure of the testis was investigated in the subterranean freshwater planarian Dendrocoelum constrictum. This is the first study investigating spermatogenesis and spermatozoon ultrastructure in a subterranean freshwater planarian species. We found that the basic structure of spermatozoa in D. constrictum is similar to that of other Tricladida that have been studied previously. In fact, D. constrictum spermatozoa possess an elongated nucleus, one giant mitochondrion, and two subterminal flagella with a 9 + ‘1’ pattern. The flagella emerge together from one side of the spermatozoon. However, D. constrictum has some characteristics that have not yet been described for other freshwater planarians. In fact, the number of cortical microtubules reaches the maximum number in the anterior and middle part of region I, and then decrease until they disappear towards the posterior extremity of the spermatozoon. The extreme tip of the anterior region of the spermatozoon exhibits a specific external ornamentation of the plasma membrane. 相似文献

The morphology and ultrastructure of the male reproductive system of dwarfish males of the monoecious aphid species Glyphina betulae (subfamily Thelaxinae) and the heteroecious species Anoecia (Anoecia) corni (subfamily Anoeciinae) are described. The testicular follicle of these species has the form of a single sac, the proximal parts of the vasa deferentia are slightly (G. betulae) or strongly (A. (A.) corni) expanded, the accessory glands are sack-shaped, and in G. betulae asymmetric and strongly elongated, whereas the ejaculatory duct is short.In both species only mature spermatozoa have been found within the testicular follicles, i.e. the consecutive stages of spermatogenesis have not been observed in adult males. Our studies also show that the testicular follicle, vasa deferentia, accessory glands and ejaculatory duct are histologically very simple. They are composed of more-or-less flattened epithelium of a secretory type, and thin muscle fibres. The epithelial cells are rich in rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria and small vacuoles. The vasa deferentia, especially in G. betulae, are filled with an electron-dense secretion which, as was shown by histochemical staining, contains proteins and polysaccharides. We suggest that the maximum secretory activity of these epithelial cells occurs, as does spermatogenesis, during larval stages, so that the short living adult males are immediately ready for copulation as in other aphids with normal-sized males. 相似文献

Third-stage larvae of the genus Anisakis from the fish Leionura atun (Trichiuroidei: Perciformes) form a new cuticle and moult in vitro in about 72 h. If the culture medium is Krebs-Ringer under 5% carbon dioxide in air at 37°C, relatively few moult and survival is poor. But more moult and survival is enhanced if worms are incubated in tissue culture medium 199, even if the gas phase is air, although they moult more quickly if it contains 5% carbon dioxide. In both Krebs-Ringer and 199 the benefits of high concentrations of carbon dioxide only accrue if the gas is present during the first 40 h of incubation. The ultrastructure of the cuticle and mature spermatozoa of the oligochaete Propappus volki Michaelsen, 1916 is described with the aim of providing additional data for clarifying the systematic position of the taxon. P. volki is a fresh-water species living in streams, and is easily recognized by its proboscis on the pre-segmental prostomium and, in mature specimens, by a clitellum covering the segments XII–XIV. The cuticle is composed of a proximal fibre zone and a distal layered epicuticle covered with membrane-bound epicuticular projections. The fibre zone consists of collagenous fibres in a matrix, arranged in either densely packed parallel layers with the fibres oriented in the same direction, or with more loosely distributed fibres, although with the same main orientation. The epicuticular projections are pyramidal with the base leaning on the outer surface of the epicuticle. The cuticle covering the proboscis differs in morphology from that of the rest of the worm; the fibre zone is composed of thin and short fibrils running in all directions, and the epicuticular projections are longer and more narrow than the projections in other regions of the worm.
The spermatozoa are filiform cells formed, in sequence, by an acrosome, an elongated nucleus, a long midpiece, and a flagellum. The acrosomal tube is short and straight with a completely external acrosomal vesicle. Following the acrosome is a apically corkscrew-shaped and basally straight nucleus. The midpiece is twisted and formed by five mitochondria. The flagellum shows a prominent central sheath arrangement.
A comparison with ultrastructurally described cuticles and spermatozoa from other clitellate species reveals most similarities with enchytraeids. 相似文献
