Neutral-arena encounters were staged between pairs of sexually mature male bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus), between pairs of immature males, and between pairs consisting of one of each. Mature males exhibited more aggressive components of behaviour to each other than did immature males, but mature males did not attack immature males in ‘mixed’ encounters. The relevance of these results to the population ecology of voles is discussed.  相似文献

At the breeding season (November) the mature male parr had a thicker epidermis than had the immature parr. In winter (February) there was no difference, while in May, at the smoltification period, the previously mature male parr had a thicker epidermis than the immature parr. In both categories of fish the epidermis was thinner in May than in November. The epidermal thickness in castrated male parr was the same as in immature parr. Treatment with 11-ketoandrostenedione (llkΔ4) increased epidermal thickness in castrated males. Treatment with testosterone and llkΔ4 increased epidermal thickness in previously mature males in spring. There was no development of anadromous secondary sexual characters (hooked lower jaw, adult nuptial colouration) in any male.  相似文献

Scent markings of voles are visible via their ultraviolet reflection. Kestrels, and possibly other diurnal raptors, may use this property when hunting. We performed a laboratory study on bank voles to determine whether UV-reflectance of scent marks differs in relation to sex, age and social status. When reflectance spectra of scent marks were measured with a spectroradiometer, we found UV reflectance to be strongest in mature males. There were no differences between mature females and immature juveniles, nor between sexes in juveniles or mature and immature individuals in females. Moreover, we did not find any difference in UV reflectance between dominant and subordinate mature males. The results of this study support earlier findings that UV sensitive predators may use UV reflectance of scent marks as a prey cue. Consequently, studies on differing vulnerability of voles to avian predators should take into account not only their space use and behaviour but also the UV reflectance of their scent marks. Patterns of laboratory-determined aggressive behaviour and exploratory activity were examined in wild-caught male beach voles (Microtus breweri), an island-endemic species. This species is ecologically interesting because it has been found not to exhibit the super-annual population cycles typical of other rodents in the subfamily Microtinae. We found that body weight and reproductive condition were good predictors of aggressive behaviour, with heavier and reproductively active voles showing higher incidences of several stereotyped aggressive acts. Aggression also increased as the percentage of males and females who were reproductively active in the control population increased. Aggression was negatively correlated with population density, and more or less independent of dispersal rate. Dispersers and residents exhibited similar aggressive behaviour patterns. These observations are consistent with models which have proposed that population cycles in other vole species are controlled through the social interactions of individuals.  相似文献

Tear proteins were detected by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the vole, Microtus arvalis. The tear proteins were separated to 6 to 8 bands and the bands were divided to three regions on the anodic side. In the adult male vole, a male specific band (Vtp-1) was detected in the first region. The first region of adult female and immature voles contained two specific bands (Vtp-2, 3). In the castrated adult males or adult males injected with estrogen, the male specific hand, Vtp-1, disappeared and Vtp-2 and 3 bands appeared. In all castrated voles, the Vtp-1 band appeared and Vtp-2 and 3 bands disappeared after the administration of testosterone. Thus, sex hormone-dependent proteins are present in vole tears.  相似文献

Biological odours of conspecifics are known to have strong influences on behavioural interaction in bank voles Clethrionomys glareolus. This experiment tested two hypotheses. (1) Olfactory cues from familiar and unfamiliar mature opposite-sex conspecifics differ in their attractiveness to males and females, and their behavioural reactions change with age. (2) A genetically based mechanism is involved in female recognition of kin.In a two-choice preference test, prepubertal males and females were more attracted to familiar than to unfamiliar odours of opposite-sex conspecifics, as manifested by more time spent sniffing familiar voles. As the young reached sexual maturity they shifted their odour preferences. Mature males and females preferred the novel odour of unrelated opposite-sex conspecifics to that of relatives. The results of experiments testing the second hypothesis indicate that females use a genetically based mechanism to recognise their kin. Young and mature females were able to recognise the odour of their biological but socially unknown fathers, and showed the same pattern of behaviour as females in previous experiments.The possible biological functions of kin recognition in bank voles are discussed.  相似文献

Spacing between individuals in populations of Harmothoë imbricata has been investigated both on the shore and in the laboratory. Males tend to occur closer together than females, and the mean male‐male individual distance measured was less than the mean distance between females; male—female distances for immature worms were intermediate. When worms mature they pair: the male mounts the female and lies across her dorsal surface. There is evidence that after spawning the members of a pair separate. Contact responses between worms have been investigated in the laboratory. Most encounters between immature worms lead to separation, as a result of one or both worms moving rapidly away from the other or fighting; females show more marked avoidance behaviour than males. The majority of male‐male and female‐female encounters between mature worms also lead to separation but in male‐female encounters the male usually mounts the female. A male which has mounted a female becomes highly aggressive and will attack intruding males but not females.  相似文献

The role of familiarity in affecting the outcome of social interactions among meadow voles was investigated in both a laboratory and a field experiment. In the laboratory, captive meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, were exposed to a conspecific's odour. The voles were then placed into two groups: familiar and unfamiliar. Familiar voles were individuals who underwent staged dyadic encounters with the conspecific to whose odours they had been exposed. Unfamiliar voles were individuals who underwent paired encounters with conspecifics to whose odours they had not been exposed. In the field experiment, familiar voles were neighbours that were trapped within each other's home ranges over two consecutive bi-weekly trapping sessions. Unfamiliar voles were individuals that were trapped on different trapping grids. The results of the laboratory and field studies were similar. Encounters between familiar females resulted in less agonistic behaviour and more amicable acts than encounters between unfamiliar females. In contrast, encounters between familiar males resulted in more agonistic behaviour than encounters between unfamiliar males. Familiarity did not affect the outcome of male-female interactions. These results are discussed in the framework of the social system of the meadow vole.  相似文献

Sex-Specific Aggression and Antipredator Behaviour in Young Brown Trout   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Sex differences in adult behaviour are often interpreted as consequences of sexual selection and/or different reproductive roles in males and females. Sex-specific juvenile behaviour, however, has received less attention. Adult brown trout males are more aggressive than females during spawning and juvenile aggression may be genetically correlated with adult aggression in fish. We therefore tested the prediction that immature brown trout males are more aggressive and bolder than immature females. Because previous work has suggested that precocious maturation increases dominance in salmonids, we included precocious males in the study to test the prediction that early sexual maturation increase male aggression and boldness. Aggression and dominance relations were estimated in dyadic contests, whereas boldness was measured as a response to simulated predation risk using a model heron. Independent of maturity state, males initiated more than twice as many agonistic interactions as females in intersexual contests. However, males were not significantly more likely to win these contests than females. The response to a first predator attack did not differ between sex categories, but males reacted less to a second predator attack than females. Sexual maturity did not affect the antipredator response in males. Since there is no evidence from field studies that stream-living immature male and female salmonids differ in growth rate, it appears unlikely that the sex differences demonstrated are behavioural consequences of sex-specific investment in growth. It seems more likely that sex-specific behaviour arises as a correlated response to sexually selected gene actions promoting differential behaviour in adult males and females during reproduction. Alternatively, sex differences may develop gradually during juvenile life, because a gradual developmental program should be less costly than a sudden behavioural change at the onset of sexual maturity.  相似文献

Based on the hypothesis that, in Akodon azarae, polygyny operates through female defence, we studied inter-male aggression in order to test the following predictions: during the breeding period (1) resident males are more aggressive than intruder males in the presence of females (FP), and (2) aggressive behaviour is independent of male condition (resident or intruder) in the absence of females (FA). To test our predictions, we used the resident male behavioural response towards an intruder male in relation to FP or FA. We conducted 30 encounters in FP and 27 in FA in 0.79-m2 round enclosures placed in the Espinal Reservation. Our results support the prediction that, in FP, the intensity of aggressive behaviour exhibited by males varied in relation to resident or intruder condition. Resident males showed high levels of aggression towards intruders, and intruders exhibited the greatest values of submissive behaviours with residents. In FA, the intensity of aggressive behaviour did not vary in relation to resident or intruder condition. Both resident and intruder males exhibited low aggressive behaviour and inter-male encounters resulted mainly in non interactive behaviours. Our results support the hypothesis that, in A. azarae, the polygynous mating system operates through female defence.  相似文献

This study examined whether dominant migratory males (adopting fighter tactics) of the masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou would more aggressively attack large mature male parr (adopting sneaker tactics) as large mature male parr are expected to have the potential to cause a greater decrease in fertilization success. The frequency of aggressive behaviour was not related to the body size of males, and it increased with the frequency of interactions with mature male parr. The fertilization success of mature male parr was much lower than migratory males, and no relationship was observed between fertilization success and aggressive behaviour. The low fertilization success of mature male parr, despite infrequent aggressive behaviour by migratory males, indicates that there might be little benefit for migratory males to attack mature male parr more aggressively according to their body size.  相似文献

The aggressive behaviour of female hamsters was studied while they were housed in large enclosures with males and in brief tests with males or females. Some females are not aggressive with any male, whereas others are very aggressive toward all males in both testing conditions. Females that are not aggressive toward intact males may be very aggressive toward castrated males or females. When the animals are housed together for long periods of time, males dominate only if they are much heavier. Male dominance takes a relatively long time to establish and often there is an equivocal period characterized by reversals of dominance. Female dominance is rapidly established. Unless the male is much heavier, the female determines the presence or absence of agonistic behaviour.  相似文献

The socially monogamous mandarin vole (Microtus mandarinus) shows significant behavioral plasticity. We examined whether levels of sociability, parental care and central expression of estrogen receptor alpha differed between two populations with different ecologies. Our results show that males from the Chengcun population display significantly more amicable and less aggressive behaviors towards novel same-sex individuals compared to males from the second population of Xinzheng. Chengcun voles directed more licking behavior towards neonatal pups than did Xinzheng voles. Differences were also found in the number of estrogen receptor alpha-immunoreactive neurons. For example, Xinzheng males displayed significantly higher immunoreactivity than Chengcun males in the medial amygdala, medial preoptic area and ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus. Xinzheng females expressed higher levels of estrogen receptor alpha-immunoreactivity than Chengcun females in the medial preoptic area. Chengcun females exhibited significantly more estrogen receptor alpha expression than Xinzheng females in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. Our results indicate that mandarin voles from the Chengcun site possess monogamous traits, and animals from Xinzheng possess polygamous traits. It also appears that different social behavior and levels of parental care in these two populations may be associated with differences in estrogen receptor alpha-immunoreactive neurons.  相似文献

We examined male–male competition in guppies (Poecilia reticulata) to test for evidence of hierarchy formation and any subsequent effects on male mating success by comparing the interactions of pairs of males that were siblings and life‐long tank mates with those of unrelated pairs that had never met. These pairs of males were first observed in the absence of a female; then a female was added to gauge the effects of the initial male–male interactions on male sexual behaviour. The unfamiliar/unrelated pairs engaged in significantly more aggressive interactions such as physical contacts, nipping and chasing than the familiar/related pairs. Based on several previous studies, we suggest that familiarity played a greater role than relatedness in the differences in behaviour that we observed. Our results suggest that, in some circumstances, more aggressive males may have more mating opportunities than less aggressive males. Our results also indicate that males adjust their aggressive and courtship behaviours to the perceived intensity of competition for mates, based on the number of mature males in their rearing tanks. We suggest that male–male competition for mating opportunities may play a more important role in the guppy mating system than previously thought.  相似文献

The concentration of proteins in the urine of adult bank vole males was higher than that in urine of immature males and females. After separation of the urine by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of SDS, the principal urinary protein had a slightly lower mobility than cytochrome C. Urine from females or castrated males contained only trace amounts of this protein. Injection of testosterone into castrated males increased this protein band. We suggest that bank vole males, like those of rats and mice, synthesize and release in their urine an androgen-dependent protein fraction.  相似文献

We tested whether variation in heterozygosity could produce cyclic changes in population size in meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus). For this to occur, three conditions must be met: (1) populations are more outbred (heterozygotic) at high than low population density, (2) heterozygotic voles are more aggressive than relatively inbred individuals, and (3) heterozygotic voles have lower reproductive fitness, though being superior at defending resources. We found no evidence that heterozygosity varied with population size or that reproductive success varied with heterozygosity. However, the former test was indirect and relatively weak. We directly measured aggression and heterozygosity of individual voles. Aggression was significantly related to heterozygosity: higher heterozygosity correlated with more aggression in males and less aggression in females. The proportion of variance in aggression that could be explained by heterozygosity was small. These results suggest that changes in population size of meadow voles could not be driven by systematic changes in heterozygosity with population size.  相似文献

Hatchery-reared mature male Atlantic salmon parr were shorter than immature parr of the same age through the winter period and this difference increased prior to smolting in spring. Stripping had no effect on growth. In autumn mature male parr had a higher condition factor (CF) than immature parr, but from early January no difference was observed between unstripped mature males and immature parr. Stripping reduced the CF of male parr but the difference had disappeared by the time of smolting when the CFs of both mature groups were lower than that of immature fish. The quantity of expressible milt in stripped males decreased from c . 3% body weight in November and December to <0.05% by 2 March, after which no further milt expression was recorded. Milt expression in previously unstripped males was about 1% of body weight on 2 March, similar to that of stripped males 1 month earlier.  相似文献

An enzymatically dispersed pituitary preparation from Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix) was used to study the dynamics of gonadotropin release. After an 18-h incubation, the cells were challenged with different luteinizing hormone-releasing hormones (LHRH) for 90 min. Using pituitary cells from mature males, mammalian and chicken LHRH I (Gln8-LHRH) had approximately equal luteinizing hormone (LH)-releasing activity whereas chicken LHRH II (His5, Trp7, Tyr8-LHRH) was 8-9 times more potent. The LHRH agonist (Trp6, Pro9-NEt-LHRH) had 15 times greater potency than chicken LHRH I. Pre-incubation with an LHRH antagonist (D-Phe2, D-Trp6-LHRH) significantly suppressed LH release. Acid extracts of median eminence released LH from pituitary cells, extracts from short-day and long-day males had equal activity, while tissue extracts from castrated males had significantly greater LH-releasing activity. Pituitary cells from sexually immature males released LH in response to chicken LHRH I in a similar profile to cells from mature males. These data indicate that the quail LHRH receptor in the male recognizes several different molecular species of LHRH and the response to LHRH is comparable between short- and long-day males. Pituitary cells from ovulating females were variably sensitive to LHRH peptides, possibly due to changes in pituitary sensitivity during the ovulatory cycle. Pituitary cells from immature females did not release LH in response to chicken LHRH I. Weanling male and female field voles were placed in long or short photoperiods, kept at 18 degrees C or 4 degrees C, and fed (ad libitum) diets containing 24%, 16%, 8% and 4% protein, for 6 weeks. Animals in the long photoperiod were more sexually mature than were animals in the short photoperiod. Temperatures had no effect on females, but did affect males: those kept at 4 degrees C had heavier testes and wider seminiferous tubules than those kept at 18 degrees C. There was little difference between the animals on 24%, 16% and 8% protein diets. Animals on 4% protein diets had retarded growth rates and were significantly less sexually mature than those on the other 3 diets, males having smaller testes and seminal vesicles and narrower seminiferous tubules and females having smaller ovaries and uteri.  相似文献

Competition between male fallow deer (Dama dama), during the breeding season was studied to determine if conflict strategies were consistent with the reduction of risk. Agonistic interactions between males were analysed in relation to age, dominance rank and availability of mating opportunities. The breeding season was divided into two main periods: the pre-rut began when all males had cleaned the velvet from their antlers and ended on the last day before matings were first observed, while the rut refers to the period between the first and last matings. Overall, socially mature males (≥4yr old) were involved in more interactions than immature (≤3yr old) males. Males established dominance rank largely by non-contact agonistic interactions during the pre-rut and there was substantial carry-over of rank to the rut, when it was correlated with mating success. The mating success of males was skewed; mature males achieved 99.4% of the matings and immature males accounted for 0.6%. A mature male was 13 times more likely to fight than an immature male; the mature males that fought most often did so between 0.4 and 0.5 times per hour. During the rut, the number of fights was positively correlated across days with the number of matings. The majority of agonistic interactions (79%) comprising dyads of immature males, involved antler contact. In contrast, mature males engaged antlers in only 42% of their interactions. Fights between mature males lasted more than twice as long as those between immature males and were more likely to occur between opponents with similar dominance ranks. However, towards the end of the rut formerly mismatched opponents were more likely to fight. Thus males operated conditional competitive strategies to decide when to interact and fight. The persistence of rank order from the pre-rut period to the rut and the tendency for mature males to resolve disputes without antler contact, served to reduce the frequency of fights and therefore the risk of serious injury.  相似文献
