100 Years of Research on ‘Turbellaria’   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Comprehensive research on the ‘Turbellaria’ – or what are known now as the free-living platyhelminths – can mark its beginnings with the first monographic treatises on the group, foremost those by v. Graff, Lang, Wilhelmi and Benham. A major center for turbellarian research grew up around Graff in Graz, Austria, from 1884 through the first quarter of the 20th century; among its members were Böhmig, A. Meixner, J. Meixner, Reisinger and Steinböck. Other contributors to the major research effort in the later years of the 19th and early part of the 20th century were scattered in Germany, Italy, France, Scandinavia, Russia, Japan and the United States and included Hofsten, Steinmann, Wilhelmi, Sabussov, Beauchamp, Bresslau, Bock, Kenk, Ijima and Kaburaki. The attention to detail and accuracy of presentation by these early workers in Graz and elsewhere has made their contributions of long-lasting value. Between 1910 and 1960, modern research whose impact is still widely felt today took form. It includes studies in systematics (Luther, Karling, Hyman, Meixner, Beauchamp, Ijima, Ivanov, Mamkaev, Kenk, Papi, Riedl, Marcus, Ax), development (Bresslau , Reisinger, Steinböck), physiology (Hyman, Westblad), and genetics (Benazzi). Electron microscopy had a profound impact on morphological study starting in the 1970's, and the data it provided led to a new phylogenetic system of the Platyhelminthes as a whole, emphasizing the paraphyletic nature of the ‘Turbellaria’ within it. Systematic biology can be expected to make further advances by combining molecular methods with high-quality traditional taxonomic ones, still essential to this field. Other methodological advances spurring turbellarian research today include immunocytochemistry, molecular biology of nucleic acids, karyology and computational methods. Better understanding of nervous systems and muscle systems should come through studies in functional biology, immunocytochemistry, fluorescence microscopy and molecular biology. Understanding the early evolution of the brain as a control center in the nervous system will be especially interesting. Studies of structural and regulatory proteins as well as the newer microscopical techniques should provide insight into the regulation of cell proliferation, tissue growth, and embryonic development. Ecology and behavior are areas in which research efforts should be intensified. Culturing and the new techniques in molecular biology, microscopy and computational methods now allow the collection of quantitative, experimental data in these fields. Current karyological and biogeographical studies as well as work on the evolution of sex in hermaphrodites are encouraging signs that we might soon better understand many aspects of reproduction and of interactions of free-living platyhelminths in their ecosystems. Turbellarians remain important research subjects for reasons that inspired interest by even the earliest workers, the probability that they are the most primitive living representatives of the Bilateria.  相似文献

The proton conductance of the mitochondrial inner membrane can be quantified by applying Ohm's law to the experimentally determined protonmotive force and the proton current flowing around the proton circuit in the absence of ATP synthesis or ion transport. This last parameter is derived from the rate of State 4 respiration multiplied by the H+/O stoichiometry for the substrate. When the activity of the dehydrogenase supplying electrons to the respiratory chain is progressively increased the proton conductance increases rapidly when the protonmotive force is greater than 220 mV. The consequences of this non-ohmic relationship are discussed.  相似文献

Background

There is little consensus, and minimal evidence, regarding the age at which to stop cervical screening. We studied the association between screening at age 50–64 y and cervical cancer at age 65–83 y.

Methods and Findings

Cases were women (n = 1,341) diagnosed with cervical cancer at age 65–83 y between 1 April 2007 and 31 March 2012 in England and Wales; age-matched controls (n = 2,646) were randomly selected from population registers. Screening details from 1988 onwards were extracted from national databases. We calculated the odds ratios (OR) for different screening histories and subsequent cervical cancer. Women with adequate negative screening at age 65 y (288 cases, 1,395 controls) were at lowest risk of cervical cancer (20-y risk: 8 cancers per 10,000 women) compared with those (532 cases, 429 controls) not screened at age 50–64 y (20-y risk: 49 cancers per 10,000 women, with OR = 0.16, 95% CI 0.13–0.19). ORs depended on the age mix of women because of the weakening association with time since last screen: OR = 0.11, 95% CI 0.08–0.14 at 2.5 to 7.5 y since last screen; OR = 0.27, 95% CI 0.20–0.36 at 12.5 to 17.5 y since last screen. Screening at least every 5.5 y between the ages 50 and 64 y was associated with a 75% lower risk of cervical cancer between the ages 65 and 79 y (OR = 0.25, 95% CI 0.21–0.30), and the attributable risk was such that in the absence of screening, cervical cancer rates in women aged 65+ would have been 2.4 (95% CI 2.1–2.7) times higher. In women aged 80–83 y the association was weaker (OR = 0.49, 95% CI 0.28–0.83) than in those aged 65–69 y (OR = 0.12, 95% CI 0.09–0.17). This study was limited by an absence of data on confounding factors; additionally, findings based on cytology may not generalise to human papillomavirus testing.

Conclusions

Women with adequate negative screening at age 50–64 y had one-sixth of the risk of cervical cancer at age 65–83 y compared with women who were not screened. Stopping screening between ages 60 and 69 y in women with adequate negative screening seems sensible, but further screening may be justifiable as life expectancy increases. Hewett Cottrell Watson and Edward Forbes were two naturalists of the Victorian age. They were protagonists on a dispute that generated comment and serves as an illuminating case study of misunderstanding in priority issues. Watson accused Forbes of having plagiarized his original classification of the British plants into groups on the basis of their geographical distribution. This controversy originated mostly from a so-far-ignored basic difference in Watson’s and Forbes’ ideas about biogeographical regionalization. Watson’s classification of the British flora into groups of species with similar distribution was probably the first application of the concept of “regional chorotype.” By contrast, the biogeographical classification of the British flora proposed by Forbes belongs to the concept of “element,” because it was based on assumed species history (i.e. colonization routes). The two approaches may produce similar outcomes, but remain conceptually different. Although personal reasons may have contributed to exacerbate the Watson–Forbes controversy, failure in recognizing this distinction by its actors and their contemporaries, such as Hooker and Darwin, was the most important cause.  相似文献

Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein: GFAP-Thirty-One Years (1969–2000)   总被引:46,自引:0,他引:46  
It is now well established that the glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is the principal 8-9 nm intermediate filament in mature astrocytes of the central nervous system (CNS). Over a decade ago, the value of GFAP as a prototype antigen in nervous tissue identification and as a standard marker for fundamental and applied research at an interdisciplinary level was recognized (Raine, 135). As a member of the cytoskeletal protein family, GFAP is thought to be important in modulating astrocyte motility and shape by providing structural stability to astrocytic processes. In the CNS of higher vertebrates, following injury, either as a result of trauma, disease, genetic disorders, or chemical insult, astrocytes become reactive and respond in a typical manner, termed astrogliosis. Astrogliosis is characterized by rapid synthesis of GFAP and is demonstrated by increase in protein content or by immunostaining with GFAP antibody. In addition to the major application of GFAP antisera for routine use in astrocyte identification in the CNS, the molecular cloning of the mouse gene in 1985 has opened a new and rich realm for GFAP studies. These include antisense, null mice, and numerous promoter studies. Studies showing that mice lacking GFAP are hypersensitive to cervical spinal cord injury caused by sudden acceleration of the head have provided more direct evidence for a structural role of GFAP. While the structural function of GFAP has become more acceptable, the use of GFAP antibodies and promoters continue to be valuable in studying CNS injury, disease, and development.  相似文献

This review focuses on studies of water movement across biological membranes performed over the last 50 years. Different scientific approaches had tried to elucidate such intriguing mechanism, from hypotheses emphasizing the role of the lipid bilayer to the cloning of aquaporins, the ubiquitous proteins described as specific water channels. Pioneering and clarifying biophysical work are reviewed beside results obtained with the help of recent sophisticated techniques, to conclude that great advances in the subject live together with old questions without definitive answers.  相似文献

Background

Rabies is endemic in Sri Lanka, but little is known about the temporal and spatial trends of rabies in this country. Knowing these trends may provide insight into past control efforts and serve as the basis for future control measures. In this study, we analyzed distribution of rabies in humans and animals over a period of 12 years in Sri Lanka.

Methods

Accumulated data from 1999 through 2010 compiled by the Department of Rabies Diagnosis and Research, Medical Research Institute (MRI), Colombo, were used in this study.

Results

The yearly mean percentage of rabies-positive sample was 62.4% (47.6–75.9%). Three-fourths of the rabies-positive samples were from the Colombo, Gampaha, and Kalutara districts in Western province, followed by Galle in Southern province. A high percentage of the rabies samples were from dogs (85.2%), followed by cats (7.9%), humans (3.8%), wild animals (2.0%), and livestock (1.1%). Among wild animals, mongooses were the main victims followed by civets. The number of suspect human rabies cases decreased gradually in Sri Lanka, although the number of human samples submitted for laboratory confirmation increased.

Conclusions

The number of rabid dogs has remained relatively unchanged, but the number of suspect human rabies is decreasing gradually in Sri Lanka. These findings indicate successful use of postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) by animal bite victims and increased rabies awareness. PEP is free of charge and is supplied through government hospitals by the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka. Our survey shows that most positive samples were received from Western and Southern provinces, possibly because of the ease of transporting samples to the laboratory. Submissions of wild animal and livestock samples should be increased by creating more awareness among the public. Better rabies surveillance will require introduction of molecular methods for detection and the establishment of more regional rabies diagnostic laboratories.  相似文献

The ratio between the body circumference at the waist and the hips (or WHR) is a secondary sexual trait that is unique to humans and is well known to influence men’s mate preferences. Because a woman''s WHR also provides information about her age, health and fertility, men''s preference concerning this physical feature may possibly be a cognitive adaptation selected in the human lineage. However, it is unclear whether the preferred WHR in western countries reflects a universal ideal, as geographic variation in non-western areas has been found, and discordances about its temporal consistency remain in the literature. We analyzed the WHR of women considered as ideally beautiful who were depicted in western artworks from 500 BCE to the present. These vestiges of the past feminine ideal were then compared to more recent symbols of beauty: Playboy models and winners of several Miss pageants from 1920 to 2014. We found that the ideal WHR has changed over time in western societies: it was constant during almost a millennium in antiquity (from 500 BCE to 400 CE) and has decreased from the 15th century to the present. Then, based on Playboy models and Miss pageants winners, this decrease appears to slow down or even reverse during the second half of the 20th century. The universality of an ideal WHR is thus challenged, and historical changes in western societies could have caused these variations in men’s preferences. The potential adaptive explanations for these results are discussed.  相似文献

The frequency of histoplasmosis among solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients appears to be low where there are only a few case series, mostly among renal and liver transplant recipients. Herein we report a case of a 44-year-old woman who underwent a living-related renal transplant 18 years prior to evaluation, developed a nodule after followed by ulceration upon her posterior right leg and a second one upon her left leg 3 months and 2 months before her hospitalisation, respectively. The biopsy of lesion revealed the presence of Histoplasma spp. Bone marrow aspiration was performed and also revealed the same organism. She had initially received itraconazole without improvement of lesions, while a new lesion appeared on her left arm. Healing of all lesions could be observed after 40 days of liposomal amphotericin B when she was submitted to skin grafts on the legs and a surgical treatment on the arms, and the myelosuppression improved simultaneously. Histoplasmosis seems to be very uncommon among patients who underwent to organ solid transplantation. Most cases occur within 12–18 months after transplantation, although unusual cases have been presented many years post-transplant. There are cases reported in the literature, occurring from 84 days to 18 years after organ transplantation, but without cutaneous involvement. Our patient developed lesions on limbs and myelosuppression after 18 years of chronic immunosuppression medication. This case suggests that besides cutaneous histoplasmosis is an uncommon infection following iatrogenic immunosuppression and even rarer over a long period after the transplantation. Clinicians who care SOT recipient patients must bear in mind histoplasmosis infection as differential diagnosis in any case of cutaneous injury with prolonged fever and try to use as many tools as possible to make the diagnosis, once this disease presents a good prognosis if it is diagnosed and treated promptly.  相似文献

We studied from 1998 to 2002 the fine-scale vegetation dynamics of a poorly regenerated vacuum-mined bog located in southern Quebec. We selected mined sites that have been abandoned for 14 years and monitored the vascular and non-vascular plants, and some hydrological characteristics. We focussed our study on the monitoring of cotton-grass (Eriophorum vaginatum L.) tussocks. Major changes in the plant cover were observed during the five-year period, such as a decrease (26–31%) in the number of cotton-grass tussocks and an increase in the ericaceous shrub cover. The water table level (lower than 40 cm below the soil surface) and frost heaving appear to be the main factors explaining the failure of cotton-grass and of other typical bog plant species to colonize abandoned mined surfaces. The ericaceous shrub cover, although increasing, was still sparse even after two decades of abandonment, and it may take several additional decades before a complete shrub cover establishes itself. While the natural revegetation process of this vacuum-mined bog is still dynamic after two decades of abandonment, there is no evidence to suggest that vegetation assemblages will eventually resemble those of undisturbed peatlands.  相似文献

Dermatophytes are among the most common fungal agents causing superficial skin infections worldwide. Epidemiology of these infections is evolving and variable in every country. This report presents the Belgian epidemiological data regarding the distribution of dermatophytes species isolated by the two national reference centers for mycosis during a period of 5 years (2012–2016). Trichophyton rubrum was the most frequently isolated species, considering all sampling sites (60.3% on average between 2012 and 2016). More precisely, this dermatophyte was the major agent of Tinea unguium and Tinea corporis during this period, followed by species of the Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex. Moreover, Microsporum audouinii was the main etiological agent of Tinea capitis (TC) with a frequency of 52.5% on average between 2012 and 2016. Other African dermatophytes species such as Trichophyton soudanense and Trichophyton violaceum were also agents of TC with a respective prevalence of 11.6% and 11.5% on average. This study highlights a different dermatophyte distribution in Belgium in comparison with other European countries.
