Adult roach, bream and their presumed F1 hybrid from an Anglian Water reservoir were identified on the basis of morphological and meristic characteristics. The hybrid was clearly intermediate. Four hybrid breeding crosses were induced to spawn by hypophysis. A bream × roach cross (female named first) failed to produce fertile eggs, whereas F1 hybrid × roach, roach × F1 hybrid and F1 hybrid × F1 hybrid all produced fry. Fertility (defined as survival of eggs to hatching) was high for the F1 hybrid × roach back-cross (56%) but low for the others (<2%), in comparison to the pure species controls (roach 69%, bream 76%). Progeny from these crosses were reared until anal fin rays could be counted. These counts indicated intermediacy between the parents and back-crossed individuals, and similarity between F1 hybrids and their F2 progeny.  相似文献

The influence of an alternating electromagnetic field (EMF) on early development of amphibian embryos was examined. When the embryos developed under the influence of a low-frequency EMF (50 Hz, 5-30 mT), the rate of early development was accelerated. The effect of EMF was exerted preferentially at the gastrula stage, and the period of gastrulation was shortened. Histological observations showed that EMF promoted morphogenetic cell movements during the gastrulation. The concentration of intracellular free Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) in the embryonic cells under the influence of EMF was analyzed using Fura-2, an indicator of the intracellular concentration of calcium ions. The influence of EMF on [Ca2+]i was analyzed in embryonic cells isolated from blastula, gastrula, and neurula, EMF increased a [Ca2+]i particularly in the cells isolated from gastrula. Our results suggest that EMF specifically increased the [Ca2+]i of gastrula cells, thereby, accelerating the rate of morphogenetic cell movements during gastrulation.  相似文献

Several lines of evidence suggest that micromere signaling plays a key role in endo-mesoderm differentiation along the animal-vegetal (A-V) axis in sea urchin embryos. A recent study has suggested that the activity of micromeres of inducing endoderm differentiation of mesomere descendants is, unexpectedly, maximal at the hatching blastula stage in the echinoids Scaphechinus mirabiris and Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus. In the present study, to confirm the inductive capacity of the micromere descendants in normal development, the timing of initiation of gastrulation and the elongation rate of the archenteron were examined in both micromereless embryos and in micromereless embryos cultured until the hatching blastula stage and then recombined with micromere descendants of the same age. The micromereless embryos consistently exhibited a delay in the initiation of gastrulation and a decrease in elongation rate of the archenteron, as compared with those in controls. In contrast, when the micromereless embryos cultured until the hatching blastula stage were recombined with micromere descendants of the same age, the recombinant embryos exhibited rescue of both the delay in initiation of gastrulation and a decrease in elongation rate of the archenteron. The delayed expression of alkaline phosphatase activity, an endoderm-specific marker, in the micromereless embryos was also rescued in the recombinant embryos. The recombined micromere descendants formed the larval spicules in the same schedule as that observed in the controls. These results indicate that at the hatching blastula stage, micromere descendants emanate a signal(s) required for normal gastrulation of the presumptive endo-mesodermal region.  相似文献

The influence that an induced magnetic storm (IMS) modeled in a confined volume has on the early ontogenesis of Rutilus rutilus was studied. The significant effects of the IMS were observed for the hatching rate of roach embryos, the size-weight and morphometric parameters of the fry, the variability of the vertebral column, and ontogeny stability in the roach offspring.  相似文献

Piscivory of perch can occur within a few weeks after perch hatch, leading to the development of two size‐cohorts, with the larger perch becoming cannibals. However, the possibility of early piscivory is assumed to depend on the hatch timing of the prey and predator. Two species, bream (2006) and roach (2007), were tested as the prey fish. The bream (hatching 12 days after perch) were preyed upon by the perch, leading to the predicted development of two sizes of cohorts as well as to cannibalism. With roach (hatching simultaneously with perch), however, no piscivory or cannibalism occurred and the perch population was unimodally distributed. The results of this experimental pond study underpin recent theoretical findings that size differences between predator and prey, determined through differences in the timing of hatching as well as differences in juvenile growth rates, foster the occurrence of early piscivory in YOY perch that may lead to bimodality and finally to intra‐cohort cannibalism.  相似文献

Groups of fingerlings of the pike Esox lucius, that hatched from the eggs of the same female at the beginning and end of hatching are compared. It was found that larvae of pike of the beginning of hatching passed to external feeding earlier. In the period of mixed and exogenous feeding, they not only grew, but also developed more rapidly than larvae from the same brood. It was shown that pike juveniles of the end of hatching were characterized by a retarded development and growth in the first weeks of life (until reaching a length of 100 mm and a weight of 7 g). In the second month of life, specimens of this group began to feed intensively, grow, and according to body length and weight, reached pike juveniles of the beginning of hatching. Pike fingerlings of the end of hatching were characterized by compensation growth that was manifested at the excess of fish food (at cultivation in separate aquariums when the inhibitory effect of large fish on the growth of small fish was excluded) and in ponds where fish food availability was considerably lower.  相似文献

The viability of bream, roach, and blue bream F 1hybrids at early stages of their development is analyzed. Viability is controlled according to parameters of the survival rate at stages from fertilized eggs to yearlings. During embryogenesis, significant stages (blastula—gastrula and hatching) are revealed by the amount of losses. The viability of hybrids of the first generation (compared to pure species) from the hatching stage and in the subsequent development constantly increases. At the stage of fingerlings, the viability of F 1hybrids significantly exceeds that of pure species, which points to the heterozygous effect according to the parameters of hybrid survival for the first generation, which is absent in embryogenesis.  相似文献

Our SEM study of honeybee, Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera : Apidae), embryogenesis is based on embryos fixed at 1 hr intervals from oviposition to hatching. Embryos of equal age showed little variation, so that staging could be based on developmental age. Our data confirm many earlier light microscopical observations, but are at variance with some others. The cytoplasmic connections between the future blastoderm cells and the central yolk system are severed only at the onset of gastrulation. The serosa derives from cells which immigrate into the dorsal strip and then join up to form a pre-serosa bordering the germ band rims. When the serosa has detached, the amnion grows out from the germ band margins and serves as a provisional dorsal epithelium right from the beginning. Germ band segmentation is followed by the transient regression of every second transverse groove (double segment pattern). The germ band flanks grow dorsally and replace the amnion a few hr before hatching (dorsal closure). The tracheal openings which form half-way between segment borders are closed temporarily by the embryonic cuticle; similar openings above the labial buds contribute to the tentorium rather than the tracheal system. Most head appendages retain bud character until long after hatching. The events observed in the SEM are linked in a diagram to the stage series based on living embryos.  相似文献

We examined relationships among perch population variable parameters in two types of lakes, lakes with perch (P-lakes, n?=?15) and lakes with perch and roach (PR-lakes, n?=?10) using redundancy analysis (RDA) to relate population variables to environmental factors. Effects from environmental factors were tested for significance by means of permutation tests (Monte Carlo). Three factors, pH, altitude and fraction of roach (by number) in the gill net catches, explaining 47.9% of the variation, had significant effects on perch population variables. The significance of pH was improved by partialing out the effect of conductivity and roach. Similarly, the significance of altitude was improved by partialing out the effect of pH and roach, and the significance of roach was improved by partialing out the effect of pH and altitude. When the fraction of pike in the catch was included in the analysis, the effect of roach was not significant and vice-versa, as roach and pike fractions were correlated with each other. The effect of pike was significant when roach was not included, but the effect was not as strong as the effect of roach. A biplot was constructed by plotting population variables on the first and second RDA axis, with arrows showing five selected environmental factors. Growth of 3+ to 5+ perch was positively related to pH and altitude, perch catch per unit effort was negatively related to pH and altitude, and age specific perch weight was negatively related to fraction of roach. The relationship between growth of 2+ perch and pH was not as strong as the relationship between pH and the growth of older perch. Moreover, the growth of 2+ perch was negatively related to the fraction of roach, probably due to competition between young zooplankton feeding perch and roach.  相似文献

Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance attributed to electromagnetic fields (IEI‐EMF; formerly ‘electromagetic hypersensitivity’) is a medically unexplained illness in which subjective symptoms are reported following exposure to electrical devices. In an earlier systematic review, we reported data from 31 blind provocation studies which had exposed IEI‐EMF volunteers to active or sham electromagnetic fields and assessed whether volunteers could detect these fields or whether they reported worse symptoms when exposed to them. In this article, we report an update to that review. An extensive literature search identified 15 new experiments. Including studies reported in our earlier review, 46 blind or double‐blind provocation studies in all, involving 1175 IEI‐EMF volunteers, have tested whether exposure to electromagnetic fields is responsible for triggering symptoms in IEI‐EMF. No robust evidence could be found to support this theory. However, the studies included in the review did support the role of the nocebo effect in triggering acute symptoms in IEI‐EMF sufferers. Despite the conviction of IEI‐EMF sufferers that their symptoms are triggered by exposure to electromagnetic fields, repeated experiments have been unable to replicate this phenomenon under controlled conditions. A narrow focus by clinicians or policy makers on bioelectromagnetic mechanisms is therefore, unlikely to help IEI‐EMF patients in the long‐term. Summary Pulse treatment of sea urchin embryos with 3 µM A23187 for 2 h at 20° C, starting from 3 to 6 h of development, prevented the embryos from hatching. Many embryos thus treated with A23187 produced mesenchyme cells and underwent gastrulation while still enclosed within the fertilization membrane. The pulse treatment in this pre-hatching period exerts markedly stronger inhibitory effects on hatching than on other events in early development. Treatment beginning at times earlier than 2 h and later than 8 h of development caused only a slight delay of hatching. The activity of hatching enzyme, known to increase between 6 and 8 h after fertilization, was quite low, if present at all, in embryos in which hatching was blocked by A23187. Hatching enzyme synthesis is probably blocked by the preceding pulse treatment. However, overall protein synthesis, estimated with methionine S 35 incorporation, was somewhat augmented in embryos by the pulse treatment. The blockage of hatching and the augmentation of overall protein synthesis by A23187 were appreciably reversed by procaine, tetracaine, ruthenium red or verapamil. Probably, an artificial Ca2+ signal induced by A23187 activates protein synthesis but blocks the induction of hatching enzyme synthesis.  相似文献

The behavior of juvenile 4.5-month-old roach Rutilus rutilus (L.) raised (starting on the 12th day after hatching) at different levels of habitat informational diversity (feeding with live and immobilized zooplankton and benthos, the presence of a predator, and a constant water flow in the nursery aquarium) was studied. The fish’s exploratory behavior and locomotor activity were tested in a circular chamber; swimming activity was tested in a hydrodynamic conduit. It was experimentally shown that juvenile roach raised in the presence of a predator differed significantly (p < 0.05) in regards to behavioral characteristics from the fries raised in a water current and in conditions of a high level of environmental deprivation.  相似文献

Organismal performance in a changing environment is dependent on temporal patterns and duration of exposure to thermal variability. We experimentally assessed the time‐dependent effects of thermal variability (i.e., patterns of thermal exposure) on the hatching performance of Drosophila melanogaster. Flies were collected in central Chile and maintained for four generations in laboratory conditions. Fourth generation eggs were acclimated to different thermal fluctuation cycles until hatching occurred. Our results show that the frequency of extreme thermal events has a significant effect on hatching success. Eggs exposed to 24 hr cycles of thermal fluctuation had a higher proportion of eggs that hatched than those acclimated to shorter (6 and 12 hr) and longer cycles (48 hr). Furthermore, eggs subjected to frequent thermal fluctuations hatched earlier than those acclimated to less frequent thermal fluctuations. Overall, we show that, egg‐to‐adult viability is dependent on the pattern of thermal fluctuations experienced during ontogeny; thus, the pattern of thermal fluctuation experienced by flies has a significant and until now unappreciated impact on fitness.  相似文献

The mechanisms controlling egg diapause and circadian rhythms of hatching activity have been extensively studied in insects. However, relatively little attention has been paid to the mechanisms controlling synchronized hatching from an egg mass. In this study, we examined the possible involvement of embryo–embryo interaction in controlling hatching time in Halyomorpha halys (Stål). Eggs tended to hatch earlier as the egg mass size increased. Egg separation and clumping of separated eggs at various times showed that hatching synchrony was largely determined shortly before hatching. However, whether eggs were kept in a mass or separated until several hours before hatching also influenced the hatching time, indicating the presence of embryo–embryo interactions. Eggs derived from different masses and kept in physical contact with one another hatched synchronously if their ages were within approximately 8 h. In this case, both younger and older eggs advanced only in hatching time, in contrast to a case of locusts reported by others. Eggs separated by more than 7 mm hatched as synchronously as those kept in a mass when glued to the same substrate, suggesting an important role of the egg substrate in transmitting the vibrational hatching signals to neighboring sibling eggs to synchronize hatching.  相似文献

This study aimed to determine the effect of extremely low‐frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF‐EMF) on the physiological response of phagocytes to an infectious agent. THP‐1 cells (human monocytic leukemia cell line) were cultured and 50 Hz, 1 mT EMF was applied for 4–6 h to cells induced with Staphylococcus aureus or interferon gamma/lipopolysaccharide (IFγ/LPS). Alterations in nitric oxide (NO), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) levels, heat shock protein 70 levels (hsp70), cGMP levels, caspase‐9 activation, and the growth rate of S. aureus were determined. The growth curve of exposed bacteria was lower than the control. Field application increased NO levels. The increase was more prominent for S. aureus‐induced cells and appeared earlier than the increase in cells without field application. However, a slight decrease was observed in iNOS levels. Increased cGMP levels in response to field application were closely correlated with increased NO levels. ELF‐EMF alone caused increased hsp70 levels in a time‐dependent manner. When cells were induced with S. aureus or IFγ/LPS, field application produced higher levels of hsp70. ELF‐EMF suppressed caspase‐9 activation by a small extent. These data confirm that ELF‐EMF affects bacterial growth and the response of the immune system to bacterial challenges, suggesting that ELF‐EMF could be exploited for beneficial uses. Specific features of thermoregulation behavior were studied, and values of the selected and final selected temperature (25.1°C) for early juveniles of roach Rutilus rutilus aged 11–28 days after hatching were first studied in long-term experiments (16 days). Two periods of the process of thermoselection—transient (selected temperature, up to 7–9 days after the beginning of the experiment) and final (final selected temperature, 8–10 days after the beginning of the experiment)—have been identified. The selection by larval roach of final selected temperature values occurs with use of the adaptation response of “excessive responding.” It was shown that correct determination of final selected temperature values for early juveniles of fish is possible only in long-term experiments (more than 7 days). The obtained results can be used during the analysis of behavior and distribution of larval roach under natural and experimental conditions.  相似文献

Reduced reproductive success of birds nesting near power lines has been documented but never directly attributed to electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Laboratory studies have identified EMF effects on embryonic development, but reproductive success of wild birds is dependent on additional factors, including fertility, egg size, hatching, and fledging success. We tested whether EMFs affect reproductive success of birds. Captive American kestrels (Falco sparverius) were bred for one season per year for 2 yr under either controlled or EMF conditions. EMF exposure was equivalent to that experienced by wild reproducing kestrels and was weakly associated with reduced egg laying in 1 yr only. In both years fertility was higher, but hatching success was lower in EMF pairs than control pairs. Fledging success was higher in EMF pairs than control pairs in 1995 only. Egg composition and embryonic development were examined in 1 yr only, but hatchlings were measured in both years. EMF eggs were larger, with more yolk, albumen, and water, but had thinner egg shells than control eggs. Late-term EMF embryos were larger and longer than control embryos, although hatchlings were similar in body mass and size. EMF exposure affected reproductive success of kestrels, increasing fertility, egg size, embryonic development, and fledging success but reducing hatching success.  相似文献

The roach (Rutilus rutilus) has become a sentinel species for the study of sexual disruption in wild fish populations as a consequence of exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Little is known, however, about the normal ontogeny of sexual development in this species. Here, we analyzed the ontogeny of sexual development in captive‐bred roach and assessed how growth rate and fish size affected the timing of both sexual differentiation and sexual development over a 2‐year period. Ovarian differentiation was first recorded at 68 days post‐fertilization (dpf) and this preceded testicular differentiation (first recorded at 98 dpf). In contrast, sexual maturation occurred at an earlier age in males (300 dpf) compared with females (728 dpf). No differences in body size (length or weight) were recorded between male and female roach until the fish were 415 dpf. Studies on three populations of roach which grew at different rates showed that the timing of sexual differentiation was highly variable and more related to fish size than to fish age. Time to sexual maturation was also variable among populations but, subsequent to their first year of life, gonadal status was less well associated with fish size. Interestingly, the sex ratio of the population was biased towards females in populations that grew more rapidly during early life. The findings presented here provide a valuable foundation of work to support both field‐ and laboratory‐based assessments on the effects of EDCs, and other stressors, on sexual differentiation and development in the roach. Background and Aims

High temperatures over 32–36 °C at anthesis induce spikelet sterility in rice. The use of a germplasm with an early-morning flowering (EMF) trait has been hypothesized as a way of avoiding this problem. In this study, the effect of the EMF trait on avoiding high temperature-induced sterility at anthesis by flowering at a cooler temperature in the early morning was evaluated.

Methods

The EMF trait was introgressed from wild rice (Oryza officinalis) into the rice cultivar ‘Koshihikari’ (O. sativa). First, spikelets of the EMF line and Koshihikari were subjected to rising temperatures during the daytime in the greenhouse to test for differences in spikelet sterility. Secondly, spikelets of both plants were exposed to 26, 34 and 38 °C at anthesis and to 38 °C beginning at least 1 h after flowering, in the growth chambers at 70 % relative humidity, to test for differences in tolerance to high temperatures.

Key Results

Spikelets of the EMF line started and completed flowering a few hours earlier than Koshihikari. In a greenhouse experiment, spikelets of Koshihikari opened after the air temperature reached 35 °C, but those of the EMF line could open at cooler temperatures. Under these conditions, spikelet sterility significantly increased in Koshihikari, but did not in the EMF line. The number of sterile spikelets increased as their flowering time was delayed in Koshihikari. Furthermore, the chamber experiments revealed that 60 % of the spikelets from both lines were sterile when exposed to 38 °C at anthesis, indicating that tolerance of high temperature was similar in both genotypes.

Conclusions

Reduced sterility in the EMF line subjected to rising temperatures at anthesis in the greenhouse was attributed to an earlier flowering time compared with Koshihikari. The EMF trait of wild rice is effective in mitigating anticipated yield loss due to global warming by escaping high-temperature stress at anthesis during the daytime.  相似文献

The effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted by cellular phones on the event related desynchronization/synchronization (ERD/ERS) of the 4-6, 6-8, 8-10, and 10-12 Hz electroencephalogram (EEG) frequency bands were studied in 24 normal subjects performing an auditory memory task. This study was a systematic replication of our previous work. In the present double blind study, all subjects performed the memory task both with and without exposure to a digital 902 MHz field in a counterbalanced order. We were not able to replicate the findings from our earlier study. All eight of the significant changes in our earlier study were not significant in the present double blind replication. Also, the effect of EMF on the number of incorrect answers in the memory task was inconsistent. We previously reported no significant effect of EMF exposure on the number of incorrect answers in the memory task, but a significant increase in errors was observed in the present study. We conclude that EMF effects on the EEG and on the performance on memory tasks may be variable and not easily replicable for unknown reasons.  相似文献
