Male Teleogryllus oceanicus (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) produce a conspicuous calling song to attract females. In some populations, the song also attracts the phonotactic parasitoid fly Ormia ochracea (Diptera: Tachinidae). I examined the factors affecting calling song by characterizing the calling behavior of caged crickets from an area where the fly occurs. Calling activity (proportion of time spent calling) was repeatable and a significant predictor of female attraction. However, calling activity in the parasitized population was lower than in an unparasitized Moorea population (Orsak, 1988), suggesting a compromise between high activity to attract females and low activity to avoid flies. Calling activity peaked simultaneously with fly searching, so crickets did not shift to calling when the fly is less active. Males harboring larvae did not call less than unparasitized males; however, a more controlled study of the effects of parasitization on calling behavior is needed to evaluate this result. The results are discussed in the context of other studies of the evolutionary consequences of sexual and natural selection on cricket calling behavior.  相似文献

Male field crickets call and attract females or they silently search for females in the vicinity of calling males. At high population densities, fewer calling sites are available, defense of calling sites is costly, and an increased proportion of matings should result from searching behavior. To test these predictions, individually marked field crickets, Gryllus veletisand G. pennsylvanicus, were observed for 10 h nightly in large outdoor arenas at relatively high and low densities (2020 and 55, males and females). Data were gathered on body weight, calling duration, movement, and mating frequency for individual crickets. These observations showed that variance in male mating success was significantly greater at a low density in G. pennsylvanicus, and calling duration correlated with mating success at this density. Direct selection on a trait was estimated as the partial regression coefficient (selection gradient, ) and the total selection was estimated (direct and indirect selection on correlated traits) as the covariance (standardized intensity of selection, s) of the trait on the relative mating success. Direct selection favored increased movement at a high density in G. veletis, and direct and total selection favored increased calling duration at a low density in G. pennsylvanicus. Most other comparisons were not statistically significant. The data are discussed in terms of density-dependent fluctuations in sexual selection on correlated male traits.  相似文献

Male field crickets are subject to a delicate dilemma becausetheir songs simultaneously attract mates and acoustic predators. It has been suggested that in response, crickets have modifiedvarious temporal song parameters to become less attractiveto acoustic predators. We investigated whether crickets withchirping (versus trilling) song structures are less likely toattract acoustically orienting parasitoid flies. Experimentally,we evaluated the phonotactic quest of the parasitoid fly Ormiaochracea in response to broadcast cricket calls, presentedboth simultaneously (choice paradigm) and sequentially (no-choiceparadigm). Flight trajectories were recorded in darkness usingthree-dimensional active infrared video tracking. The flies showed remarkable phonotactic accuracy by landing directly onthe loudspeaker. The introduction of acoustic fragmentationthat resembles calls of many chirping crickets altered theflies' phonotactic accuracy only slightly. Our results documentdifferential attraction between trilling and chirping cricket songs and quantitatively demonstrate that chirping songs, ifpresented alone, do not impair the efficiency (temporal investmentand landing accuracy) of the flies' phonotactic quest. Thisstudy shows that song fragmentation is no safeguard againstacoustic parasitism. We conclude that, in general, a cricket may reduce predation only if its neighbors are acousticallymore conspicuous, chiefly by amplitude.  相似文献

Embryogenesis from isolated microspore cultures of wheat was improved by ovary co-culture when compared to a completely defined medium. This indicates that essential factor(s) in addition to PAA or its analogs may be supplied by the ovaries. Isolated microspores cocultured with 20 ovaries of wheat on the top of semi-solid MMS3 induction medium for 21–30 days gave the best response. Both the number and quality of the embryos was significantly increased. The maximum frequencies of dividing microspores and of embryogenesis were 94% and 2.4%, respectively. Up to 2583 embryos were formed per 100 anthers of cv Chris and between 18% and 43% of the larger embryos regenerated into green plants upon transfer. Genotype differences for both induction and embryogenesis phases were reduced using ovary co-culture. However, there was still a strong genotype influence on plant regeneration with cv Chris, with the F1 of Chris × Sinton displaying the highest frequencies. These results are important with respect to enhancing haploidy applications in wheat biotechnology and plant breeding.Abbreviations PAA Phenylacetic acid - MMS modified MS medium - MS Murashige and Skoog's medium 1962 - FHG Hunter's FHG medium 1988  相似文献

A key adaptation for any parasitoid insect is the sensory modality that it uses to locate its host insect. All members of the speciose family Tachinidae (Diptera) are parasitoids, but only flies of the tribe Orminini use acoustic cues to find their hosts. Ormiine flies are parasitoids of various genera of crickets and katydids. Gravid females of one ormiine species, Ormia ochracea, hear the reproductive calling song of male field crickets and home in on those calls to locate their hosts. While many flies possess various kinds of ears to detect airborne sounds, only ormiine flies have been reported to possess true tympanal hearing organs. Such organs are wellknown to occur in their cricket and katydid hosts. The ormiine ear is an evolutionary innovation within Diptera. Our objective was to trace the phylogenetic origins of the tympanal hearing organ among higher flies. Since the ormiine hearing organ is a complex organ within the prothorax, we examined possible precursor structures in the prothoraces of selected Diptera. We have uncovered a suite of characters that define the ormiine ear. These characters in the prothorax include a pair of prosternal tympanal membranes, a pair of chordotonal sensory organs, and modifications of the tracheal system. We have been able to identify and trace the presumptive homologs of these ormiine characters through selected species of related Diptera, using the method of outgroup comparison.Dedicated to the memory of Dr. Edmund A. Delicious apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) and several of its strains, which have been difficult to root in vitro, were successfully propagated with rooting percentages up to 100%. The combination of treatments used to achieve this result included placing the shoots on rooting medium in the dark at 30°C for the first week of the rooting stage, then moving them to a regime of 16 hr light-8 hr dark at 25°C. The rooting medium contained half strength Murashige and Skoog salts plus 1.2 M thiamine HCl, 0.56 mM myo-inositol, 1 mM phloroglucinol (PG), 1.4 M indolebutyric acid (IBA), 1.3 M gibberellic acid (GA3), 87.6 mM sucrose, and 7 g l–1 Difco Bacto agar. Dark treatment applied during the proliferation stage (etiolation) was less effective than one applied at the beginning of the rooting stage. The optimum length of dark treatment during rooting was 4 to 7 days. Increasing the temperature from 25°C to 30°C improved rooting of Delicious, Royal Red Delicious, and Vermont Spur Delicious in the absence of PG but generally had less effect in the presence of PG. Further increase in temperature to 35°C stimulated rooting of Royal Red Delicious but reduced rooting of Vermont Spur Delicious. Transfer of the cuttings to auxin-free medium after 1 week had no effect on percentage rooting and increased the number of roots per cutting for only 1 of 4 cultivars tested and then only in the presence of PG. In general PG stimulated rooting of Delicious and its strains, but had no effect on Golden Delicious.  相似文献

How populations adapt, or not, to rapid evolution of sexual signals has important implications for population viability, but is difficult to assess due to the paucity of examples of sexual signals evolving in real time. In Hawaiian populations of the Pacific field cricket (Teleogryllus oceanicus), selection from a deadly parasitoid fly has driven the rapid loss of a male acoustic signal, calling song, that females use to locate and evaluate potential mates. In this newly quiet environment where many males are obligately silent, how do phonotactic females find mates? Previous work has shown that the acoustic rearing environment (presence or absence of male calling song) during late juvenile stages and early adulthood exposes adaptive flexibility in locomotor behaviors of males, as well as mating behaviors in both sexes that helps facilitate the spread of silent (flatwing) males. Here, we tested whether females also show acoustically induced plasticity in walking behaviors using laboratory‐reared populations of T. oceanicus from Kauai (HI; >90% flatwings), Oahu (HI; ~50% flatwings), and Mangaia (Cook Islands; no flatwings or parasitoid fly). Though we predicted that females reared without song exposure would increase walking behaviors to facilitate mate localization when song is rare, we discovered that, unlike males, female T. oceanicus showed relatively little plasticity in exploratory behaviors in response to an acoustic rearing environment. Across all three populations, exposure to male calling song during development did not affect latency to begin walking, distance walked, or general activity of female crickets. However, females reared in the absence of song walked slower and showed a marginally non‐significant tendency to walk for longer durations of time in a novel environment than those reared in the presence of song. Overall, plasticity in female walking behaviors appears unlikely to have facilitated sexual signal loss in this species.  相似文献

Some populations of the field cricket Teleogryllus oceanicusare parasitized by the phonotactic fly Ormia ochracea. Flieslocate crickets by their song and deposit larvae onto them. The larvae develop inside the cricket for 1 week before killingthe host upon emergence. The reproductive compensation hypothesispredicts that parasitized crickets should increase their reproductiveeffort during the initial stages of infestation to offset theloss of fitness resulting from their shortened life span. An alternative hypothesis predicts that parasitized crickets willdecrease reproduction, either because they are unable to reproduceor because selection acting on the parasitoid favors decreasedhost reproduction. In laboratory experiments, parasitized malecrickets had reduced reproductive effort (spermatophore production, calling, mating activity, and mass allocated to reproductivetissue) compared to unparasitized males. Parasitized males fedad libitum showed no evidence of allocating a greater proportionof their resources to reproduction. Parasitized and healthymales did not differ significantly in resting or maximal metabolicrates, although this may have been due to the substantial contributionof larval respiration to the metabolic rate of the host—parasitoidcomplex. These results are consistent with previous studiesand suggest that T. oceanicus males parasitized by O. ochraceado not increase their reproductive effort. We discuss potentialreasons that crickets do not increase reproductive effort inresponse to fly larvae and address difficulties in demonstratingaltered life-history patterns in response to parasitism.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Predators, including insect parasitoids, often eavesdrop on prey signals, and as a result, predation can have important effects on the evolution of prey signalling behaviour.
2. The phonotactic parasitoid fly, Ormia ochracea , uses the calling songs of male field crickets to locate their field crickets hosts. In the western USA, this fly parasitises the variable field cricket, Gryllus lineaticeps . Previous work with one fly population suggested that female flies, like female field crickets, preferentially orient to male songs with higher chirp rates and longer chirp durations, although a limited range of male song types was used in this previous study. The current study, with a different fly population, used field-based, two-speaker choice tests to examine: (1) the effect of male chirp rate and chirp duration on fly attraction, using a natural range of song types; and (2) the relative importance of these song types in host selection by the flies.
3. Three lines of evidence suggested that chirp rate is more important than chirp duration in host selection. (a) The flies consistently preferred higher chirp rates but only sometimes preferred longer chirp durations. (b) The flies consistently preferred higher chirp rate/shorter chirp duration songs to lower chirp rate/longer chirp duration songs. (c) Preferences for longer chirp durations could be eliminated by increasing the amplitude of the less attractive song type, while preferences for higher chirp rates could only sometimes be eliminated by increasing the amplitude of the less attractive song type.
4. Fly predation may favour lower chirp rates and shorter chirp durations in G. lineaticeps , and may have resulted in stronger selection on chirp rate than on chirp duration.  相似文献

In many animals, males produce signals to attract females for mating. However, eavesdropping parasites may exploit these conspicuous signals to find their hosts. In these instances, the strength and direction of natural and sexual selection substantially influence song evolution. Male variable field crickets, Gryllus lineaticeps, produce chirped songs to attract mates. The eavesdropping parasitoid fly Ormia ochracea uses cricket songs to find its hosts. We tested female preferences for song structure (i.e., chirped song vs. trilled song) in crickets and flies using choice experiments. Female crickets from a parasitized and a non-parasitized population significantly preferred the species-typical chirped song, whereas flies significantly preferred a trilled song, which is expressed by other hosts in different regions. Sexual selection due to female choice and natural selection due to fly predation both appear to favor the chirped song structure of G. lineaticeps in the parasitized population, whereas sexual selection favors the chirped structure in the non-parasitized population.  相似文献

Female crickets lacking experience with phonotaxis to conspecific calling song respond to trains of continuously repeated sound pulses (trill), whereas experienced females do not. In the present study such inexperienced crickets were tested for their responsiveness to trills of pulse repetition periods from 30 to 70 ms on a Y- shaped maze. Stimulation with a repetition period of 30 ms led to unexpectedly low phonotactic and exploratory activity. Initial stimulation with trills of 30- ms repetition period drastically reduced the responsiveness of inexperienced animals to conspecific calling song and other attractive stimuli. Effects of visual stimulation on the phonotactic behavior of female crickets are demonstrated. Threatening visual stimuli changed the behavior of experienced animals to a state that resembles that of inexperienced animals. The relevance of these observations is discussed with respect to the development of the auditory pattern recognition mechanism in crickets.  相似文献

The segregation of seven isozyme marker genes was investigated using eight controlled crosses in almond. The cultivar Nonpareil was the maternal parent in all crosses. Pollination was achieved using eight different cultivars, and a total of 3200 individual kernels were assessed. For each isozyme the goodness-of-fit test was used to test for departure from the expected frequencies assuming Mendelian inheritance. Given a higher than expected number of significant results for individual isozymes, independent segregation between pairs of isozymes was tested using the chi-square statistic on the resulting two-way contingency tables. In all crosses a highly significant association (P value< 0.001) was observed between (1) the AAT- 1 and IDH isozymes loci and (2) the LAP-1 and PGM-2 isozymes loci, which leads to the conclusion that the respective isozyme pairs are linked. In addition, a significant association (P value < 0.001) was observed between LAP-1 and GPI-2 when the pollen sources were Fritz, Mission, or Price, but this could not be tested for the remaining five pollen sources, Carmel, Grant, Keane, Ne plus Ultra, Peerless, because they are homozygous at these loci. If LAP-1 is linked with GPI-2 and PGM-2, it might be expected that we should find evidence of linkage between GPI-2 and PGM-2. The lack of a significant association between these two isozymes suggests that LAP-1 is located centrally on the chromosome. These three pairs of linked loci are the first to be reported in almond.  相似文献

We examined pesticide residue effects on the egg parasitoid Anaphes iole Girault (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae), an inundative biological control agent for Lygus hesperus Knight (Heteroptera: Miridae) in strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa Duchesne). Our objectives were to identify compatible pesticides, determine appropriate parasitoid release timings for minimizing harmful effects, and develop an approach for interpreting pesticide toxicity curves. Six insecticides, 2 acaricides and 6 fungicides were tested, and survivorship of adult A. iole exposed to foliar residues for 48 h, at 4–6 different times after pesticide application, was examined. A logistic function was developed for incorporating control mortality at each test date. Values for LT50 (Lethal Time for 50% mortality) and mortalities on day 1 (initial mortality) and day 13 (estimated maximum time parasitoid releases can be delayed under extreme summer conditions) were estimated. In the study, insecticide residues proved to be the most toxic, followed by those from acaricides while most fungicides were least toxic. Among insecticides, fenpropathrin, bifenthrin and carbaryl caused the greatest mortality (estimated mortality on day 13 >75%). Residues of naled resulted in the least mortality (LT50=3.2 days) followed by methomyl (LT50=8.3 days) and malathion (LT50=13.2 days). Estimated mortality = 12.3% on day 13 for the acaricide propargite and <1% for abamectin. For the fungicides benomyl, captan, myclobutanil and thiram, estimated mortality on day 1 was <1%, and for iprodione it was <6%, indicating compatibility with A. iole releases. For sulfur, LT50=0, but the mortality decay curve was relatively flat (estimated mortality on day 13=13.6%). These results suggest possibilities for integrating A. iole releases with certain pesticide programs by appropriate timing of pesticide applications to minimize negative impacts.  相似文献

Summary Isozyme analysis of Brassica napus cv Topas and CGRC5006 as well as of Sinapis alba cv Emergo revealed significant polymorphism between the two species for the isozymes, aconitate hydratase, glucose phosphate isomerase, and diaphorase. F1 hybrids between B. napus 5006 and S. alba cv Emergo were backcrossed to B. napus cv Topas, and the S1 progeny of the first two backcrosses were studied isozymically. At the backcross one level the frequency of S. alba or S. alba plus B. napus patterns observed ranged from 18% to 87% across the four lines studied. There were differences between lines for the frequency of S. alba patterns, which could have an impact on the efficiency of selection for subsequent backcrossing. By the backcross two generation in one of the two lines studied, GR86-24, the S. alba patterns for GPI and DIA had been lost, while in the other line, GR86-28, the S. alba pattern for ACO had been lost, resulting in lost opportunity for S. alba gene transfer. In a wide cross such as S. alba x B. napus, which requires an intensive effort to accomplish, the isozymes ACO, GPI, and DIA may serve as useful markers to ensure gene transfer between the two species has occurred. In addition, the identification of lines with divergent isozyme patterns from B. napus will provide the basis for establishing linkages between S. alba traits of interest and isozyme markers.  相似文献

There has been little or no documentation of the insect community attracted to fermented tree sap, despite our familiarity with it. This study describes the influence of resource abundance (exudate quantity) on species richness, insect abundance, and diversity at the patch level in order to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for community structure. Resource abundance was positively correlated with species richness and insect abundance, negatively correlated with the equitability index (J), and not significantly correlated with diversity (Simpsons index of diversity; 1/D). Both correlation analyses and canonical correspondence analysis based on taxonomic categories indicated that responses to resource abundance were much greater in parasitoid wasps (Ichneumonoidea), drosophilid flies (Drosophilidae), and rove beetles (Staphylinidae). Field experiments showed that patches with more of the resource had greater species richness and greater hornet abundance. These results indicate that resource abundance is an important factor that affects community structure at the patch level, although it does not influence diversity directly, due to differences in the response to a resource across subgroups; drosophilid flies, the most abundant group that was heavily dependent on tree sap, make an especially large contribution to the change in J. Various factors influence the variation in the response to resource abundance, including population size, feeding habits, and resource utilization patterns (i.e. whether the species uses patches as habitat).  相似文献

Summary A computer controlled setup is introduced which allows the song analysis of both male and femaleLeptophyes punctatissima during duetting in a laboratory situation. The essential acoustical parameters for the initiation of the male's phonotactic approach towards the stationary female are described. The female responds reflex-like to the male song after a remarkably short delay time of about 28 ms. The male only performs phonotaxis if he perceives the female reply above an intensity value of about 50 dB SPL and if the female response falls within a critical time window from 25 to a maximum of 55 ms after the onset of his song (Figs. 3 and 5). The sound intensity and overall time delay of the female response can be varied independently, so that the relationship between both parameters and their limitations for maximum phonotaxis distance can be described.  相似文献

We measured canine teeth from 28 woolly spider monkeys (Brachyteles arachnoides) to assess sexual dimorphism and population differences. The specimens are from the Brazilian states of Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. We found strong sexual dimorphism in canine length for individuals belonging to populations south of 22°00 latitude but no sexual dimorphism in canine length from individuals of populations north of 21°00 latitude. Canine length did not vary among females of northern and southern populations. However, southern males had significantly longer canines than northern males. This geographical difference in canine morphology, together with the presence or absence of thumbs and published accounts of differences in genetics and social structure between northern and southern populations, suggests thatBrachyteles arachnoides may be composed of at least two subspecies, which appear to be separated by the rivers Grande and Paraiba do Sul and the Serra da Mantiqueira.  相似文献

Two hypotheses about the ralationship of diabroticina beetles and plants in the family Cucurbitaceae are tested: (1) evolution of sensory receptors for cucurbitacins by diabroticina beetles was in part due to the predator protection offered by ingestion of these compounds, and (2) commercial varieties of cucurbitacin-producing cucumber offer Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber chemical protection from some potential sources of natural controlSpotted cucumber beetles fed either Marketmore 70 cucumber which contains cucurbitacin-C or Marketmore 72 which totally lacks cucurbitacin were presented to four species of vertebrate predators that commonly occur in the summer and/or winter habitats of D. u. howardi: Bufo americanus, B. fowleri, Peromyscus maniculatus, Colinus virginianus. None of the four species were significantly deterred from preying on beetles that had eaten Marketmore 70 cucumber. These results do not support either of the two hypotheses. The limitations of these negative results as evidence for refutation of the first hypothesis are discussed.

Clostridium sporogenes MD1 grew rapidly with peptides and amino acids as an energy source at pH 6.7. However, the proton motive force (p) was only –25 mV, and protonophores did not inhibit growth. When extracellular pH was decreased with HCl, the chemical gradient of protons (ZpH) and the electrical membrane potential () increased. The p was –125 mV at pH 4.7, even though growth was not observed. At pH 6.7, glucose addition did not cause an increase in growth rate, but increased to –70 mV. Protein synthesis inhibitors also significantly increased . Non-growing, arginine-energized cells had a of –80 mV at pH 6.7 or pH 4.7, but was not detected if the F1F0 ATPase was inhibited. Arginine-energized cells initiated growth if other amino acids were added at pH 6.7, and and ATP declined. At pH 4.7, ATP production remained high. However, growth could not be initiated, and neither nor the intracellular ATP concentration declined. Based on these results, it appears that C. sporogenes MD1 does not need a large p to grow, and p appears to serve as a mechanism of ATP dissipation or energy spilling.Mandatory disclaimer: Proprietary or brand names are necessary to report factually on available data; however, the USDA neither guarantees nor warrants the standard of the product, and the use of the name by the USDA implies no approval of the product, and exclusion of others that may be suitable.  相似文献

Summary The frequency of intra- and interchromosomal recombination was determined in RAD18 and rad18 deletion and rad18-3 mutant strains. It was found that spontaneous interchromosomal recombination at trp5, his1, ade2, and MAT was elevated 10- to 70-fold in the rad18-3 and rad18 mutants as compared to the RAD + strains. On the other hand the frequencies of spontaneous intrachromosomal recombination for the his33, his35 and the his4C , his4A duplications and for heterothallic mating type switching were only marginally elevated in the rad18 deletion mutant, and recombination between ribosomal DNA repeats was only 2-fold elevated in the rad18-3 mutant. These differences may be due to a haploid versus diploid specific difference. However interchromosomal recombination was elevated 40-fold and intrachromosomal recombination was only marginally (1.5-fold) elevated in a diploid homozygous for rad18, arguing against a haploid versus diploid specific difference. Possible explanations for the difference in the elevated levels of intra- versus interchromosomal spontaneous recombination are discussed.  相似文献
