The influence of local heating of the skin on the integrated EMG (registered with surface and subcutaneous electrodes), the amplitude of the ECG, the skin blood flow, the electrode impedance, the electrode-to-skin impedance, and the tissue impedance is investigated. Except for the increasing skin blood flow each of the variables exhibits a significant reduction with an increase in skin temperature. From these results the existence of two mechanisms is deduced mediating thermal influence on bioelectric signals picked up by surface electrodes: 1. An alteration of the signal source. 2. An alteration of the electric transfer characteristics of the tissue between signal source and electrode. Especially in quantitative surface electromyography the temperature dependence of the signal can be a source of error.  相似文献

The study of hand and finger movement is an important topic with applications in prosthetics, rehabilitation, and ergonomics. Surface electromyography (sEMG) is the gold standard for the analysis of muscle activation. Previous studies investigated the optimal electrode number and positioning on the forearm to obtain information representative of muscle activation and robust to movements. However, the sEMG spatial distribution on the forearm during hand and finger movements and its changes due to different hand positions has never been quantified. The aim of this work is to quantify 1) the spatial localization of surface EMG activity of distinct forearm muscles during dynamic free movements of wrist and single fingers and 2) the effect of hand position on sEMG activity distribution. The subjects performed cyclic dynamic tasks involving the wrist and the fingers. The wrist tasks and the hand opening/closing task were performed with the hand in prone and neutral positions. A sensorized glove was used for kinematics recording. sEMG signals were acquired from the forearm muscles using a grid of 112 electrodes integrated into a stretchable textile sleeve. The areas of sEMG activity have been identified by a segmentation technique after a data dimensionality reduction step based on Non Negative Matrix Factorization applied to the EMG envelopes. The results show that 1) it is possible to identify distinct areas of sEMG activity on the forearm for different fingers; 2) hand position influences sEMG activity level and spatial distribution. This work gives new quantitative information about sEMG activity distribution on the forearm in healthy subjects and provides a basis for future works on the identification of optimal electrode configuration for sEMG based control of prostheses, exoskeletons, or orthoses. An example of use of this information for the optimization of the detection system for the estimation of joint kinematics from sEMG is reported.  相似文献

This tutorial is aimed primarily to non-engineers, using or planning to use surface electromyography (sEMG) as an assessment tool for muscle evaluation in the prevention, monitoring, assessment and rehabilitation fields. The main purpose is to explain basic concepts related to: (a) signal detection (electrodes, electrode–skin interface, noise, ECG and power line interference), (b) basic signal properties, such as amplitude and bandwidth, (c) parameters of the front-end amplifier (input impedance, noise, CMRR, bandwidth, etc.), (d) techniques for interference and artifact reduction, (e) signal filtering, (f) sampling and (g) A/D conversion, These concepts are addressed and discussed, with examples. The second purpose is to outline best practices and provide general guidelines for proper signal detection, conditioning and A/D conversion, aimed to clinical operators and biomedical engineers. Issues related to the sEMG origin and to electrode size, interelectrode distance and location, have been discussed in a previous tutorial. Issues related to signal processing for information extraction will be discussed in a subsequent tutorial.  相似文献

While recording surface electromyography [sEMG], it is possible to record the electrical activities coming from the muscles and transients in the half-cell potential at the electrode–electrolyte interface due to micromovements of the electrode–skin interface. Separating the two sources of electrical activity usually fails due to the overlapping frequency characteristics of the signals. This paper aims to develop a method that detects movement artifacts and suggests a minimization technique. Towards that aim, we first estimated the frequency characteristics of movement artifacts under various static and dynamic experimental conditions. We found that the extent of the movement artifact depended on the nature of the movement and varied from person to person. Our study's highest movement artifact frequency for the stand position was 10 Hz, tiptoe 22, walk 32, run 23, jump from box 41, and jump up and down 40 Hz. Secondly, using a 40 Hz highpass filter, we cut out most of the frequencies belonging to the movement artifacts. Finally, we checked whether the latencies and amplitudes of reflex and direct muscle responses were still observed in the highpass-filtered sEMG. We showed that the 40 Hz highpass filter did not significantly alter reflex and direct muscle variables. Therefore, we recommend that researchers who use sEMG under similar conditions employ the recommended level of highpass filtering to reduce movement artifacts from their records. However, suppose different movement conditions are used. In that case, it is best to estimate the frequency characteristics of the movement artifact before applying any highpass filtering to minimize movement artifacts and their harmonics from sEMG.  相似文献

Recently, high-density surface EMG electrode grids and multi-channel amplifiers became available for non-invasive recording of human motor units (MUs). We present a way to decompose surface EMG signals into MU firing patterns, whereby we concentrate on the importance of two-dimensional spatial differences between the MU action potentials (MUAPs). Our method is exemplified with high-density EMG data from the vastus lateralis muscle of a single subject. Bipolar and Laplacian spatial filtering was applied to the monopolar raw signals. From the single recording in this subject six different simultaneously active MUs could be distinguished using the spatial differences between MUAPs in the direction perpendicular to the muscle fiber direction. After spike-triggered averaging, 125-channel two-dimensional MUAP templates were obtained. Template-matching allowed tracking of all MU firings. The impact of spatial information was measured by using subsets of the MUAP templates, either in parallel or perpendicular to the muscle fiber direction. The use of one-dimensional spatial information perpendicular to the muscle fiber direction was superior to the use of a linear array electrode in the longitudinal direction. However, to detect the firing events of the MUs with a high accuracy, as needed for instance for estimation of firing synchrony, two-dimensional information from the complete grid electrode appears essential.  相似文献

The identification of the motor unit (MU) innervation zone (IZ) using surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals detected on the skin with a linear array or a matrix of electrodes has been recently proposed in the literature. However, an analysis of the reliability of this procedure and, therefore, of the suitability of the sEMG signals for this purpose has not been reported. The purpose of this work is to describe the intra and inter-rater reliability and the suitability of surface EMG in locating the innervation zone of the upper trapezius muscle. Two operators were trained on electrode matrix positioning and sEMG signal analysis. Ten healthy subjects, instructed to perform a series of isometric contractions of the upper trapezius muscle participated in the study. The two operators collected sEMG signals and then independently estimated the IZ location through visual analysis. Results showed an almost perfect agreement for intra-rater and inter-rater reliability. The constancy of IZ location could be affected by the factors reflecting the population of active MUs and their IZs, including: the contraction intensity, the acquisition period analyzed, the contraction repetition. In almost all cases the IZ location shift due to these factors did not exceed 4 mm. Results generalization to other muscles should be made with caution.  相似文献

Sweat accumulation underneath surface EMG (sEMG) electrodes is a common problem in workplace studies which compromises electrode adherence to the skin as well as signal fidelity. In this study, the effect of sweat accumulation on signal amplitude and mean frequency (MF) was examined to determine if the sEMG signal becomes altered through the sweat layer and whether this effect can be avoided by interrupting the pool of sweat using a thin strip of medical adhesive between the electrode snaps. Nine males performed a maximum, isometric contraction of their right quadriceps as sEMG was collected. Skin conditions under the electrode were dry and wet in incremental layers of 0.02 mm of artificial sweat. The results demonstrated that sweat accumulation under sEMG electrodes dampens the amplitude of the EMG signal in a predictable way (r = .88 and .97 for double and single snap electrodes, respectively) with almost 2% and 3% deterioration for every 0.02 mm of sweat depending on the type of electrode used. The medical adhesive proved to be highly effective at preventing amplitude deterioration indicating that signal shunting can be prevented. MF was not influenced by sweat accumulation even under the extreme wet condition.  相似文献

A technique is reported for the long-term application of surface electrodes for ambulatory electromyographic (EMG) recording. Prior to electrode application the surrounding skin is lightly painted with tincture of benzoin. This treatment improves adherence to the skin of disposable electrodes and electrode attachment collars, reduces skin trauma associated with electrode removal, and minimizes sensitivity to electrode adhesives.  相似文献

PurposeTo determine how the skin dose varies in patients receiving radiation treatment for breast cancer in the prone and supine positions.MethodsFifty patients were scanned in the prone and supine positions. A radiation treatment plan was created for the left breast using a 6-MV beam for a prescribed dose of 42.66 Gy in 16 fractions. The dose was calculated using 1- and 2.5-mm calculation grid sizes and the surface dose was compared in both techniques.ResultsThe median gantry angles relative to the skin surface at the central axis were 8 and 52 degrees for treatment in the prone and supine positions, respectively. The mean dose difference between the prone and supine techniques was statistically significant from 3- to 5-mm depth for both grid sizes. For the 1-mm calculation grid size, the doses at 3-, 4-, and 5-mm depths in the prone and supine techniques were 87.80% and 89.10% (P < 0.003), 91.92% and 94.50% (P < 0.00), and 95.30% and 98.20% (P < 0.00), respectively; for the 2.5-mm grid size, the respective doses were 87.10% and 88.59% (P < 0.00), 91.60% and 94.63% (P < 0.00), and 95.10% and 97.80% (P < 0.00), respectively.ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that the prone technique facilitates a relatively lower skin dose than the supine technique. This observation is probably due to the beam angle. The beam is more perpendicular to the skin surface in the prone technique, whereas it is more tangential in the supine technique, which may deliver a higher skin dose. Thus, the dose to the skin should be evaluated in the prone technique, and if desired, the skin dose could be carefully augmented via a bolus or beam spoiler.  相似文献

Musculoskeletal neck discomfort is prevalent in many occupations and has been the focus of much research employing surface electromyography (sEMG). Significant differences in experimental methods among researchers make comparisons across studies difficult. The goal of the current research was to use empirical methods to answer specific methodological questions concerning use of sEMG in evaluation of the neck extensor system. This was accomplished in two studies. In Experiment 1, ultrasound technology was used to: (a) determine accessibility of m. splenius and semispinalis capitis with surface electrodes, (b) identify appropriate electrode locations for these muscles/muscle groups, and (c) illustrate potential benefits of using ultrasound in locating muscles/placing electrodes. Experiment 2 sought to assess effects of posture when normalizing sEMG data. Results from Experiment 1 showed no direct access to semispinalis capitis for surface electrodes; their activity can only be sampled as part of a group of muscles. In most subjects, m. splenius was found to be accessible to surface electrodes. Electrode placement recommendations are provided. Results of Experiment 2 showed significant differences in normalized EMG data between a posture-specific technique and a reference posture technique. Posture-specific normalization is recommended for accurately assessing the relative intensity of contractions of these muscles.  相似文献

The application of atomic force microscopy (AFM) for observing iodine complexes in starch has been limited due to limitations including granular sample fixation techniques and possible unintended reactions with embedding materials such as epoxy resins or adhesives. In this paper, a new method is described that employs an optical microscopic technique to ensure that the tip of the AFM is scanning a specified granule without any probe-induced particle movement by the AFM probe motion. The direct sprinkling of samples on a two-sided adhesive tape allows investigations in an in situ environment of the un-embedded starch granule surface and thus provides high-resolution images of granule morphology and phase changes of starches in the presence of humidity and with iodine vapor. These observations demonstrate that this novel in situ AFM imaging technique allows us to visualize the hair-like structures on the surface of granular starches when starches are exposed to iodine vapor under humid environments. This study reveals that the hair-like extensions on the starch granule surfaces are strongly dependent on the organization of the glucan polymers within corn or potato starch.  相似文献

PurposeTo review the methodologies used to assess muscle co-contraction (MCo) with surface electromyography (sEMG) during gait in people with neurological impairment.MethodsThe Scopus (1995–2013), Web of Science (1970–2013), PubMed (1948-2013) and B-on (1999–2013) databases were searched. Articles were included when sEMG was used to assess MCo during gait in people with impairment due to central nervous system disorders (CNS).ResultsNineteen articles met the inclusion criteria and most studied people with cerebral palsy and stroke. No consensus was identified for gait assessment protocols (surfaces, speed, distance), sEMG acquisition (electrodes position), analysis of sEMG data (filters, normalisation techniques) and quantification of MCo (agonist-antagonist linear envelopes overlapping or agonist-antagonist overlapping periods of muscles activity, onset delimited).ConclusionGiven the wide range of methodologies employed, it is not possible to recommend the most appropriate for assessing MCo. Researchers should adopt recognized standards in future work. This is needed before consensus about the role that MCo plays in gait impairment in neurological diseases and its potential as a target for gait rehabilitation can be determined.  相似文献

Contactless simultaneous positioning of micrometer-sized particles in suspension (e.g., copolymer beads, living cells, silicon microparts) can be performed using ultrasound. Current devices are capable of collecting particles into planes or lines by exciting a resonance in the fluid by means of a piezoelectric transducer located beneath the fluidic cavity and are designed such that a one-dimensional pressure field is created. The focus of this work is to collect cells in distinct point locations for potential drug screening array applications. A device to create two-dimensional arrays of cells within a micromachined chamber is described. The chamber is etched into a silicon wafer and sealed with glass; on the underside of the silicon layer a piezoelectric actuator is attached. A signal is applied to each of two orthogonally aligned strips electrodes defined on the surface of the piezoelectric plate. These two strip electrodes create independently addressable approximately one-dimensional pressure fields. It is shown that by applying the same signal to each electrode a diagonally aligned grid of cells can be produced. However, the independence of the two electrodes allows the application of two signals with slightly different frequencies to be applied which creates a grid of circular cell clumps highly suitable for the identified application. The study of muscle activity using surface electromyography (sEMG) is commonly used for investigations of the neuromuscular system in man. Although sEMG has faced methodological challenges, considerable technical advances have been made in the last few decades. Similarly, the field of animal biomechanics, including sEMG, has grown despite being confronted with often complex experimental conditions. In human sEMG research, standardised protocols have been developed, however these are lacking in animal sEMG. Before standards can be proposed in this population group, the existing research in animal sEMG should be collated and evaluated. Therefore the aim of this review is to systematically identify and summarise the literature in animal sEMG focussing on (1) species, breeds, activities and muscles investigated, and (2) electrode placement and normalisation methods used. The databases PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Vetmed Resource were searched systematically for sEMG studies in animals and 38 articles were included in the final review. Data on methodological quality was collected and summarised. The findings from this systematic review indicate the divergence in animal sEMG methodology and as a result, future steps required to develop standardisation in animal sEMG are proposed.  相似文献

In this paper, we present computational techniques to investigate the effect of surface geometry on biological pattern formation. In particular, we study two-component, nonlinear reaction–diffusion (RD) systems on arbitrary surfaces. We build on standard techniques for linear and nonlinear analysis of RD systems and extend them to operate on large-scale meshes for arbitrary surfaces. In particular, we use spectral techniques for a linear stability analysis to characterise and directly compose patterns emerging from homogeneities. We develop an implementation using surface finite element methods and a numerical eigenanalysis of the Laplace–Beltrami operator on surface meshes. In addition, we describe a technique to explore solutions of the nonlinear RD equations using numerical continuation. Here, we present a multiresolution approach that allows us to trace solution branches of the nonlinear equations efficiently even for large-scale meshes. Finally, we demonstrate the working of our framework for two RD systems with applications in biological pattern formation: a Brusselator model that has been used to model pattern development on growing plant tips, and a chemotactic model for the formation of skin pigmentation patterns. While these models have been used previously on simple geometries, our framework allows us to study the impact of arbitrary geometries on emerging patterns.  相似文献

Tissue donor scarcity is a major hindrance to articular cartilage tissue engineering. Previous research shows that dermal fibroblasts express chondrocytic markers after seeding on aggrecan-coated surfaces. Since cell roundness appears to correlate with chondrocytic behavior of dermal fibroblasts, this study quantified roundness by measuring cell height and surface area-volume ratio. In addition to aggrecan as a surface coating, collagen type II and decorin, two other major extracellular matrix components of articular cartilage, were examined. Aggrecan, collagen type II, and decorin were coated onto a glass substrate using three application techniques: static drying, airbrush, and painting. Vertical scanning interferometry (VSI) is a novel technique that allows for the expedient morphological determination of single cells. Interferometry was used for the characterization of protein-coated surfaces in addition to characterizing the morphology of single dermal fibroblasts after 24 h of seeding. Fibroblast height was found to vary from 1.0 to 4.0 microm and protein coating, application technique, and seeding position were significant factors (p < 0.002). The largest cell heights were observed on aggrecan and collagen type II coated surfaces using the air brush and static applications. Additionally, variations were observed for surface area-volume ratio, ranging from 1.75 to 11.94 microm(-1) with decorin resulting in the lowest ratio, followed by collagen type II and aggrecan. This study identifies optimal coating conditions for stimulating morphology in dermal fibroblasts that is characteristic of the chondrocytic phenotype. These conditions can be employed to attempt articular cartilage regeneration and bypass difficulties due to a paucity of donor tissue.  相似文献

DNA computing has been applied in broad fields such as graph theory, finite state problems, and combinatorial problem. DNA computing approaches are more suitable used to solve many combinatorial problems because of the vast parallelism and high-density storage. The CLIQUE algorithm is one of the gird-based clustering techniques for spatial data. It is the combinatorial problem of the density cells. Therefore we utilize DNA computing using the closed-circle DNA sequences to execute the CLIQUE algorithm for the two-dimensional data. In our study, the process of clustering becomes a parallel bio-chemical reaction and the DNA sequences representing the marked cells can be combined to form a closed-circle DNA sequences. This strategy is a new application of DNA computing. Although the strategy is only for the two-dimensional data, it provides a new idea to consider the grids to be vertexes in a graph and transform the search problem into a combinatorial problem.  相似文献

Electromyographic models to assess muscle fatigue   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Muscle fatigue is a common experience in daily life. Many authors have defined it as the incapacity to maintain the required or expected force, and therefore, force, power and torque recordings have been used as direct measurements of muscle fatigue. In addition, the measurement of these variables combined with the measurement of surface electromyography (sEMG) recordings (which can be measured during all types of movements) during exercise may be useful to assess and understand muscle fatigue. Therefore, there is a need to develop muscle fatigue models that relate changes in sEMG variables with muscle fatigue. However, the main issue when using conventional sEMG variables to quantify fatigue is their poor association with direct measures of fatigue. Therefore, using different techniques, several authors have combined sets of sEMG parameters to assess muscle fatigue. The aim of this paper is to serve as a state-of-the-art summary of different sEMG models used to assess muscle fatigue. This paper provides an overview of linear and non-linear sEMG models for estimating muscle fatigue, their ability to assess power loss and their limitations due to neuromuscular changes after a training period.  相似文献
