Asymmetry in size, shape, and color impairs the protective value of conspicuous color patterns 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:2
The received view of protective coloration in animals is thatconspicuous colors and patterns have evolved because they elicitavoidance behavior in potential predators. In the present study,we examine the spontaneous response of naive predators (Gallusgallus domesticus) to artificial prey to test the hypothesisthat deviations from bilateral symmetry of signaling patternelements may negatively influence the avoidance-inducing effectof conspicuous color patterns. Chicks displayed stronger aversionsto artificial "butterfly" prey items possessing symmetric colorpattern elements than to those possessing asymmetric signalswith pattern elements of different color or shape. Althoughthey attacked signals with a size asymmetry of 5% at the samerate as symmetric signals, signals with a size asymmetry of7.5% or more were attacked more often than were symmetric signals.These results suggest that the protective value of conspicuouscolor patterns is impaired by asymmetry in color, shape, andsize of color pattern elements. Our findings also argue againstthe notion that animals have inherent preferences for symmetricover asymmetric objects, and demonstrate the existence of athreshold for asymmetry detection, beyond which further incrementsin asymmetry have no influence on signal efficacy. 相似文献

1. Variation in immune responsiveness within and among species is the subject of the emerging field of ecological immunology. The work reported here showed that individuals of Lestes forcipatus Rambur differ in their likelihood of mounting immune responses, and in the magnitude of those responses, against a generalist ectoparasite, the water mite Arrenurus planus Marshall. 2. Immune responses took the form of melanotic encapsulation of mite feeding tubes, occurred in the few days after host emergence, and resulted in mites dying without engorging. Such immune responses were more probable and stronger for hosts sampled later rather than earlier in the season. Such responses may act as selection affecting seasonal patterns of egg hatching and larval abundance of mites. 3. Contrary to expectation, metrics of host size (wing length) and wing cell fluctuating asymmetry were not related to the likelihood of immune responses. 4. The importance of season on immune expression of insects has not been explored in detail. These results suggest possible trade‐offs in allocation of melanin (or its precursors) to maturation versus immunity, and indicate the need for studies on the synergistic effects of weather and parasitism on host species that use melanotic encapsulation to combat parasites and pathogens. 相似文献

We studied effects of habitat structure on routine travel velocities,
intermittent locomotion, and vigilance by the degu (Octodondegus), a diurnal rodent of central Chile. We predicted thattravel speed, pauses during locomotion, and vigilance wouldbe greater in open (riskier) than in shrub (safer) habitats.Video recordings of marked individuals in the wild were used
to measure speed and other variables of spontaneous locomotionnot triggered by predatory attack or any other noticeable stimulusduring nonforaging periods. Time spent vigilant while foragingwas also measured. Because degus use bare-ground runways fordistant movements (e.g., between burrow openings and/or foodpatches), data on locomotion decisions were not confounded by
effects of obstructive vegetation cover and/or resource abundance.When moving across the habitat between different feeding places,degus showed an intermittent pattern of locomotion, interruptingrunning events with short pauses. As predicted, travel speedand the duration of pauses between locomotion bursts were significantlygreater in open habitats. Further, the duration of locomotionbursts between feeding sites or between feeding sites and burrowswas significantly longer in open habitats. Our assumption that
pauses and velocities are independent decisions was supportedby the lack of correlation between pauses and speeds duringlocomotion events. During foraging, degus devoted more timeto vigilance in open than in shrub habitats. The static positionadopted by degus during pauses, the speeds attained during
movements, and the concordance between pausing behavior andvigilance across habitats suggest that pausing has an antipredatoryrole and is not limited to orientation and/or physiologicalrecovery. Our results support the view that degus perceivehigher predation risk in open areas and that flexible movement

Without receptor stimulation, cells from multicellular organisms die by apoptosis. Here we show that lymphocytes deprived of receptor stimulation undergo progressive atrophy before commitment to apoptosis. Following loss of receptor engagement, lymphocytes rapidly downregulated the glucose transporter, glut1. This was accompanied by reduction in mitochondrial potential and cellular ATP, suggesting that atrophy resulted from depletion of glucose-derived metabolic substrates. Expression of the antiapoptotic protein, Bcl-X(L), prevented death but not atrophy following either growth factor or glucose withdrawal. In Bcl-X(L) transgenic animals, size and metabolic activity of naive T cells were regulated through the TCR and correlated with TCR-dependent glut1 expression. These data suggest that ligands for cell-specific receptors promote cell survival by regulating nutrient uptake and utilization. 相似文献

The peak position vs log molecular weight curves of protein-SDS complexes chromatographed on controlled pore glass of narrow pore size distribution is linear over a molecular weight range of 17,000–385,000. A glass with a pore size of approximately 500 Å allows the inclusion of all complexes in this range. Peak position curves on glasses with broad pore distributions show decreased resolution and deviate from linearity at low elution coefficients.Exclusion size analysis of the elution coefficients of individual complexes from different columns with pore diameters ranging from 197 to 650 Å gives from 120 to 423 Å as their longest dimension. Assuming constant hydration and SDS-to-protein ration, the found dimension suggests the shape of a football, rather than a sphere or rigid rod. 相似文献

Two plataspid hemipteran species proliferated on Bridelia micrantha(Euphorbiaceae). Colonies of Libyaspis sp., never attendedby ants, developed on branches, while Caternaultiella rugosa
lived at the base of the trunks, mostly in association withCamponotus brutus that attends them in carton shelters. Bothplataspid species are prey of the coccinellid beetle Anisolemniatetrasticta, whose larvae always detected them by contact.When attacked the Libyaspis nymphs cowered, so that the hypertrophiedlateral sides of their tergits made contact with the substrate,but the ladybirds slid their long forelegs under these nymphs,lifted them, and bit them on the ventral face. The Caternaultiellanymphs, which do not have hypertrophied extremities of thetergits, tried to escape at contact with the ladybirds, butwere rarely successful. To capture them, the ladybirds eitheradopted the previous behavior or directly grasped then bitthem. We noted a graded aggressiveness in the ants toward theladybirds according to the situation: no aggressiveness onthe tree branches; stopping the ladybirds that approached theshelters where the ants attended Caternaultiella; and fullattack of ladybirds that tried to capture Caternaultiella nymphssituated outside shelters. The latter behavior can emit analarm pheromone that triggers the dispersion of their congenerswhile attracting attending C. brutus workers. Naive workersare not attracted, so we deduce that this behavior is the resultof a kind of learning. 相似文献

Social network theory underwent rapid development in the 1970s by sociologists and was recently further refined by physicists. Network theory has been applied to systems consisting of interconnected components as different as that of actors in Hollywood, the neural network of the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans , and the US national power grid. Network theory has great potential as a conceptual tool, for example, it can be used to provide quantitative predictions regarding information transmission, spreading of diseases, and the potential for establishing reciprocal altruistic relationships. Conventionally behavioural studies have been restricted to the analysis of social interactions between isolated pairs or small groups of individuals. Here we built up, however, from pair‐wise interactions, the social network of an entire population of guppies ( Poecilia reticulata ) in Trinidad. We show that guppies have highly structured social networks with significant repeated interactions between male–male, female–female and male–female pairs. Furthermore, sexual segregation within the network is positively correlated with the strength of the social interactions. Finally, individuals were observed to be more variable in their inter‐sexual interactions than their intra‐sexual ones. 相似文献

Fast-growing bacteria and fungi are expected to cause the initial stage of decomposition of woody fragments in and on soils,
i.e. the respiration of sugars, organic acids, pectin and easily accessible cellulose and hemi-cellulose. However, little
is known about the factors regulating initial wood decomposition. We examined the effect of wood fragment size, vertical position,
nitrogen addition and soil origin on initial wood decay and on the relative importance of fungi and bacteria therein. Two
fractions of birch wood were used in microcosm experiments, namely wood blocks (dimensions: 3 × 0.5 × 0.5 cm) and sawdust
(dimensions: 0.5–2 mm). The woody fragments were enclosed in nylon bags and placed on top of- or buried in an abandoned arable
soil and in a heathland soil. After 15, 25 and 40 weeks of incubation, fungal biomass was quantified (as ergosterol and chitin
content) and bacterial numbers were determined. The results indicated that initial wood decay was mostly caused by fungi;
bacteria were only contributing in sawdust in/on abandoned arable soil. Larger fragment size, burial of fragments and nitrogen
addition positively influenced fungal biomass and activity. Fungal biomass and decay activities were much lower in woody fragments
incubated in/on heathland soil than in those incubated in/on abandoned arable soil, indicating that soil origin is also an

Male share of provisioning is not influenced by actual or apparent loss of paternity in western bluebirds 总被引:3,自引:2,他引:3
Approximately 45% of western bluebird (Sialia mexicana) femaleshave some chicks in the nest that are not sired by their socialmates. Extrapair fertilizations account for 42% of offspringin these nests and 19% of nestlings overall. I tested the hypothesisthat males reduce nestling provisioning when their certaintyof paternity or share of paternity is reduced. Capture and detentionof socially monogamous males for 1 h or 24 h during the layingperiod reduced males' copulatory access and their ability tomate guard, increasing the frequency with which extrapair malesintruded and attempted to copulate with resident females. Malesdetained during laying did not reduce their share of feedingtrips compared to control males detained during incubation,compared to unmanipulated males, or compared to males that werecaptured but not detained. Males detained on territory for 1h during the laying period did not reduce their share of feedingtrips when they observed male intrusion, nor when they observedtheir mates accepting extrapair copulations. Males that witnessedtheir mates accepting extrapair copulations did not reduce theirshare of risk in provisioning. Genetic fingerprinting at nonexperimentalnests indicated that males also failed to reduce their feedingcontributions when their estimated share of paternity was reduced,even when a helper male was present to reduce the impact onnestlings. These results suggest that male western bluebirdsdo not make significant adjustments in their share of provisioningwhen they have evidence of partial paternity loss. Togetherwith prior results, this study suggests that western bluebirdmales use an all-or-none rule, contributing approximately halfof the parental provisioning at nests, as long they have somecopulatory access to the female during egg laying. 相似文献

Two cysteine protease families, caspase and calpain, are known to participate in cell death. We investigated whether a stress-specific protease activation pathway exists, and to what extent Bcl-2 plays a role in preventing drug-induced protease activity and cell death in a dopaminergic neuronal cell line, MN9D. Staurosporine (STS) induced caspase-dependent apoptosis while a dopaminergic neurotoxin, MPP(+) largely induced caspase-independent necrotic cell death as determined by morphological and biochemical criteria including cytochrome c release and fluorogenic caspase cleavage assay. At the late stage of both STS- and MPP(+)-induced cell death, Bax was cleaved into an 18-kDa fragment. This 18-kDa fragment appeared only in the mitochondria-enriched heavy membrane fraction of STS-treated cells, whereas it was detected exclusively in the cytosolic fraction of MPP(+)-treated cells. This proteolytic cleavage of Bax appeared to be mediated by calpain as determined by incubation with [(35)S]methionine-labelled Bax. Thus, cotreatment of cells with calpain inhibitor blocked both MPP(+)- and STS-induced Bax cleavage. Intriguingly, overexpression of baculovirus-derived inhibiting protein of caspase, p35 or cotreatment of cells with caspase inhibitor blocked STS- but not MPP(+)-induced Bax cleavage. This appears to indicate that calpain activation may be either dependent or independent of caspase activation within the same cells. However, cotreatment with calpain inhibitor rescued cells from MPP(+)-induced but not from STS-induced neuronal cell death. In these paradigms of dopaminergic cell death, overexpression of Bcl-2 prevented both STS- and MPP(+)-induced cell death and its associated cleavage of Bax. Thus, our results suggest that Bcl-2 may play a protective role by primarily blocking drug-induced caspase or calpain activity in dopaminergic neuronal cells. 相似文献

Sexual adornments often vary markedly across a species' range,which presumably is owing to differences in local environmentalconditions and the associated selection pressures, such as naturalversus sexual selection or the relative signaling value of differentornamental traits. However, there are only a few reported examplesin which the information content of mating signals varies geographically,and even fewer in which a set of secondary sexual traits servesdifferent signaling functions in different populations. Classicstudies of sexual selection in the European barn swallow (Hirundorustica rustica) demonstrate that elongate tail-streamers provideseveral reproductive advantages to males and females and areused as reliable signals of mate quality. Here, we show thattail-streamers do not appear to confer these same benefits ina population of barn swallows from North America (Hirundo rusticaerythrogaster). Instead, ventral plumage coloration, which ismore exaggerated in North American swallows compared with theirEuropean counterparts, predicts patterns of assortative matingand annual reproductive success in H. r. erythrogaster. Theseobservations support the idea that ornamental traits can servedifferent functions among animal populations and suggest thatgeographic variation in different sexual signals may facilitatepopulation divergence, which may ultimately lead to speciation. 相似文献

ABSTRACT A study of the effect of respiratory inhibitors on O2 uptake of Euglena gracilis mitochondria, isolated from cells grown in the presence of cyanide or with ethanol as carbon source, was undertaken. The contents of cytochrome c oxidase and alternative oxidase were also determined. Inhibition of respiration by antimycin and cyanide was only partial and it was dependent on the oxidizable substrate used. Succinate oxidation was the most sensitive to cyanide whereas lactate oxidation was the most resistant. Cell growth in the presence of cyanide or with ethanol as carbon source brought about an enhanced content of alternative oxidase without a concomitant increase in cytochrome aa3 content. However, a correlation between cyanide-resistant respiration and alternative oxidase content was not found. Analysis of heme types in mitochondrial membranes revealed the absence of heme O. The data suggest the presence of an inducible alternative oxidase in Euglena mitochondria which has high resistance to cyanide and contains heme B. A close relationship between Euglena alternative oxidase and bacterial quinol oxidases containing B-type heme is proposed. 相似文献

The basement membrane between the epidermis and the dermis is indispensable for normal skin functions. It connects, and functionally separates, the epidermis and the dermis. To understand the suprastructural and functional basis of these connections, heterotypic supramolecular aggregates were isolated from the dermal-epidermal junction zone of human skin. Individual suprastructures were separated and purified by immunomagnetic beads, each recognizing a specific, molecular component of the aggregates. The molecular compositions of the suprastructures were determined by immunogold electron microscopy and immunoblotting. A composite of two networks was obtained from fibril-free suspensions by immunobeads recognizing either laminin 332 or collagen IV. After removal of perlecan-containing suprastructures or after enzyme digestion of heparan sulfate chains, a distinct network with a diffuse electron-optical appearance was isolated with magnetic beads coated with antibodies to collagen IV. The second network was more finely grained and comprised laminin 332 and laminins with α5-chains. The core protein of perlecan was an exclusive component of this network whereas its heparan sulfate chains were integrated into the collagen IV-containing network. Nidogens 1 and 2 occurred in both networks but did not form strong molecular cross-bridges. Their incorporation into one network appeared to be masked after their incorporation into the other one. We conclude that the epidermal basement membrane is a composite of two structurally independent networks that are tightly connected in a spot-welding-like manner by perlecan-containing aggregates. 相似文献

Summary Immunohistochemistry with a minoxidil antibody suggested that minoxidil-immunoreactivity is associated with the root sheaths, laterally orientated differentiating matrix cells, and dividing epithelial cells of cultured vibrissa follicles of pigmented and albino neonatal mice. The dermal papilla and connective tissue sheath were devoid of minoxidil-immunoreactivity. To verify that minoxodil-immunoreactivity in the follicles was specific, immunostaining was conducted with dissected whisker pads, formalin-fixed dead follicles, and sections of spleen, liver and kidney (non-haired organs) cultured with minoxidil. Microscopic examination revealed minoxidil-immunoreactivity in all of these tissues. Follicles and whisker pads cultured with minoxidil, then washed for one h in media were devoid of minoxidil-immunoreactivity. These data suggest that minoxidil-immunoreactivity in cultured vibrissa follicles is probably non-specific. Sections of skin from C3H and CF1 mice which were topically dosed with minoxidil (in vivo) phy demonstrated that tritiated minoxidil was bound in vivo and in vitro only to melanin granules in pigmented follicles of rodent and human tissue. This is probably non-specific binding since melanin is known to accumulate several chemically and pharmacologically unrelated drugs. It is reasonable to conclude that, under the conditions of these experiments, minoxidil is not specifically localized in any cells of whisker, pelage or, scalp follicles. 相似文献

We investigated the control of proliferation and differentiation in the larval Caenorhabditis elegans hermaphrodite germ line through analysis of glp-1 and lag-2 mutants, cell ablations, and ultrastructural data. After the first several rounds of germ cell division, GLP-1, a receptor of the LIN-12/Notch family, governs germline proliferation. We analyzed the proximal proliferation (Pro) phenotype in glp-1(ar202) and found that initial meiosis was delayed and spatially mispositioned. This is due, at least in part, to a heightened response of the mutant GLP-1 receptor to multiple sources of the somatic ligand LAG-2, including the proximal somatic gonad. We investigated whether proximal LAG-2 affects germline proliferation in the wild type. Our results indicate that (1) LAG-2 is necessary for GLP-1-mediated germline proliferation and prevention of early meiosis, and (2) several distinct anatomical sources of LAG-2 in the larval somatic gonad functionally overlap to promote proliferation and prevent early meiosis. Ultrastructural studies suggest that mitosis is not restricted to areas of direct DTC-germ line contact and that the germ line shares a common cytoplasm in larval stages. We propose that downregulation of the GLP-1 signaling pathway in the proximal germ line at the time of meiotic onset is under tight temporal and spatial control. 相似文献
