Pollen of the 27 genera presently recognized as comprising the family Lythraceae have been surveyed with light microscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Results for five genera (Physocalymma, Pleurophora, Rotala, Tetrataxis, Woodfordia), in addition to Duabanga, Sonneratia, and Punica (assigned to the Lythraceae in some classifications), are presented here; the remaining genera were treated previously in the series. The family is revealed as the most diverse palynologically of the order Myrtales. The most simple pollen type and the one common to the largest number of genera is prolate-spheroidal to prolate; tricolporate, without pseudocolpi; psilate, scabrate or finely verrucate; and 16–28 μm or less in length. Specializations include oblate grains, development of pseudocolpi (three or six in number), diversification of exine sculpturing, broadening of the colpal and pseudocolpal areas, and reduction in the conspicuousness of the colpi. Pollen evidence provides qualified support for inclusion of Punica in the Lythraceae, the generalized nature of the pollen tempering the conclusion, and little support for inclusion of Sonneratia and Duabanga in the family. Completion of the survey provides a data base of pollen characters that will be integrated in future studies with other evidence into an overall phenetic and cladistic assessment of the family leading to production of a more natural classification.

The developmental stages of the pollen wall and tapetum, together with exine morphology were studied in a number of Crocus species, by light and scanning electron microscopy. Gametogenesis was characterized by: 1) development of a thick intine, 2) single mitosis, and 3) terminal amylolysis. The tapetum was of the secretory type. In C. cartwrightianus cv. albus, abnormal sporogenesis and gametogenesis produced vacuolate pollen grains with a reduced-or no intine layer, and rich with starch granules; the tapetum was either of the parietal-or amoeboid type. The exine was echinate and the pollen grains had different types of aperture: furrows, colpi or pores. The ornamentation varied from microreticulate to irregularly perforate. The exine framework was overlaid by a pellicle resistant to chloroform-carbon disulphide, on which a layer of pollenkitt was deposited. The results are discussed from both cytological and evolutionary viewpoints.  相似文献

In order to provide new insights into phylogenetic relationships among the neotropical taxa of Phyllanthus , 28 illustrations are provided of the pollen grains of 22 selected species studied from 11 sections of the subgenera represented in the neotropics. Special attention has been given to subgenus Conami because of its variability in pollen morphology: of eight species illustrated, the apertures are diploporate colpi in three species and pores in five species; exine ornamentation is vermiculate in two species and pilate in the other six species. The six species in the neotropical sections Pityrocladus and Microglochidion (subgenus Emblica ) are characterized by prolate grains with an increased number of colpi (4–8). Of particular interest are species in which the pollen exine is clypeate (with exine shields); clypeate pollen grains are illustrated in two species of subgenus Xylophylla and in one species of section Cyclanthera that has unique exine shields with single central pila. The pollen of the one Brazilian phylloclade-bearing species illustrated (in section Choretropsis ) has 3-colporate grains with reticulate exine, typical for subgenus Phyllanthus , and very different from the clypeate grains of the West Indian phylloclade-bearing species in section Xylophylla . This pollen evidence clearly demonstrates homoplasy in the origin of phylloclades in Phyllanthus . Pollen morphological data suggest that the neotropical taxa of Phyllanthus have arisen following colonization from Africa (subgenus Kirganelia ) and Asia (subgenus Emblica ). © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 138 , 325–338.  相似文献

The morphology of mature pollen grains among 12 New World genera in tribe Antirrhineae has been examined with light and scanning electron microscopy. Pollen from 29 American species have mean polar diam that range from 17 to 26 μm, have a tectate structure with perforate, microreticulate, or reticulate surface pattern, and are subspheroidal to prolate, and trizonocolporate with fusiform or narrowly oblong colpi that are free or occasionally fused at the poles. Among the genera, pollen size is positively associated with style length but not haploid chromosome number. Three major morphological categories are recognized based on grain shape, exine structural pattern, and colpus shape. Two of these morphotypes each characterize individual genera (Mohavea, Linaria). The other morphological category includes ten New World genera and has been divided into three subcategories based on variation in lumina diam and intermittent occurrence of fused colpi. Only Antirrhinum and Pseudorontium have species or populations with pollen in more than one subcategory. Concordance of morphological, anatomical, chromosomal, and palynological data suggests that Linaria and Mohavea are best placed in separate subtribes from other native American genera. Compared to Old World taxa in tribe Antirrhineae, the most common pollen type (subspheroidal, microreticulate, apocolpate, fusiform colpi) may be the most primitive. Pollen grains with fused colpi (Antirrhinum p.p., Pseudorontium) and perforate (Mohavea) or reticulate (Holmgrenanthe) structural patterns probably represent derived types.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that bats are effective pollinators of mangroves in Malaysia. Bats (Eonycteris spelaea) visited flowers of two Sonneratia species frequently, and deposited large quantities of conspecific pollen grains on stigmas. The bats are likely to be important pollinators of the two mangrove species.  相似文献

The pollen morphology of 38 representative species and varieties within the genus Coffea L. is described. Eight pollen types, placed in two major groups, have been identified on the basis of the number of colpi, colpus characteristics, exine morphology and pollen size. Differences in pollen structures of the species studied do not correspond to present taxonomic groupings, but support a current proposal to place some of the species in the genus Paracoffea Leroy. Among the four sections in the genus, the section Eucoffea contains a high degree of pollen polymorphism.  相似文献

The pollen grains of 32 species, 1 subspecies and 4 varieties of Vitis and 1 species of Muscadinia were scanned with Hitachi S-800 scanning electron microscope and described in the present paper. In Vitis, the pollen morphology is found to be valuable for the identification of species, though it is of little significance in supraspecific classification and systematic consideration. The ornamentation of Vitis could be divided into four types: ( 1 ) The pollen grains are oblate or rarely spheroidal (P/E =0.97 ~ 1.08) in shape, with colpi wide enough to show dense granulae inside. The pollen grains of V. coignetiae Pull. Ex Planch. belong to this type. (2) The pollen grains are prolate to subprolate (P/E = 1.25 ~ 1.76 ), with sparse granulae within the colpi. This type includes l0 species, 1 subspecies and 3 varieties, such as V. hui Cheng etc. (3) The pollen grains of V. romanetii Roman du Caill. ex Planch. and V. davidii (Roman du Caill. ) Foex. var. ferruginea Merr. et Chun are prolate (P/E= 1.87 ~ 2.1), with colpi narrow and linear-shaped, but rhombic in the equational region. (4) The pollen grains are prolate or perprolate (P/E= 1.30 ~ 2. 0), with narrow and linear-shaped colpi. The species with this type of pollen grains are Muscadiniarotundifolia (Michx.) Small and 20 species of Vitis.  相似文献

The pollen morphology of 148 taxa (135 species and 13 varieties) of the parasitic plant genus Cuscuta (dodders, Convolvulaceae) was examined using scanning electron microscopy. Six quantitative characters were coded using the gap-weighting method and optimized onto a consensus tree constructed from three large-scale molecular phylogenies of the genus based on nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and plastid trn-LF sequences. The results indicate that 3-zonocolpate pollen is ancestral, while grains with more colpi (up to eight) have evolved only in two major lineages of Cuscuta (subg. Monogynella and clade O of subg. Grammica). Complex morphological intergradations occur between species when their tectum is described using the traditional qualitative types—imperforate, perforate, and microreticulate. This continuous variation is better expressed quantitatively as “percent perforation,” namely the proportion of perforated area (puncta or lumina) from the total tectum surface. Tectum imperforatum is likely the ancestral condition, while pollen grains with increasingly larger perforation areas have evolved multiple times. The reticulated tectum, unknown in other Convolvulaceae, has evolved in Cuscuta only in two lineages (subg. Monogynella, and clade O of subg. Grammica). Overall, the morphology of pollen supports Cuscuta as a sister to either the “bifid-style” Convolvulaceae clade (Dicranostyloideae) or to one of the members of this clade. Pollen characters alone are insufficient to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships; however, palynological information is useful for the species-level taxonomy of Cuscuta.  相似文献

Pollen morphology of ten Brazilian species within the South American clade (ca. 20 species) of Symplocos section Barberina (Symplocaceae) was analyzed with scanning electron microscopy to assess their reported androdioecious breeding system. All species exhibited pollen dimorphism. Pollen from male individuals is well developed and 3-colporate, whereas that from morphologically hermaphroditic individuals is malformed, often completely fragmented, lacks cytoplasm, and has no germination pores. Our results suggest that the morphologically hermaphroditic species of S. section Barberina with malformed pollen are cryptically dioecious.  相似文献

A total of 129 species from the subtribe Flueggeinae of the tribe Phyllantheae (Euphorbiaceae, Phyllanthoideae) were investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy, and 10 species using transmission electron microscopy, in order to evaluate the relationships between the eight constituent genera: Breynia, Flueggea, Glochidion, Margaritaria, Phyllanthus, Reverchonia, Richeriella, and Sauropus. Of these genera, Flueggea, Margaritaria and Richeriella share pollen with a prolate spheroidal meridional outline and a 3-colporate aperture system. Pollen of Reverchonia is also 3-colporate, but differs from that of the Flueggea alliance by its clearly prolate shape, tilioid ornamentation and absence of costae endopori. Breynia and Sauropus have 4–12 and 3–16-colporate pollen, respectively, with diploporate colpi. Two pollen types are recognised in Breynia, and four in Sauropus, one of which supports the recognition of Sect. Hemisauropus. Glochidion pollen is 3–6-colporate, and similar to that of Breynia in having reticulate sculpture with Y-shaped sexine structures, but it has monoporate colpi. Of the genus Phyllanthus, only species with pollen with diploporate colpi have been studied. Seven types are described. Diploporate Phyllanthus pollen can be distinguished from that of Breynia and Sauropus by its distinct colpus margins consisting of parallel muri. Colpal irregularities and endoaperture configurations in the subtribe are discussed, and pollen morphological trends are hypothesised. Placed in the successiform aperture series, the Flueggea alliance and Reverchonia form a basal group. Glochidion is considered intermediate, giving rise to the Breynia-Sauropus group. The relationship with Phyllanthus remains unclear.  相似文献

Although discounted in a monograph recognizingStylisma as distinct fromBonamia, pollen morphology is useful in distinguishing these genera, Light and scanning electron microscopy show that the pollen ofStylisma is characterized by an advanced 3-aggrecolpate aperture totaling 12 or 15 colpi, while pollen ofBonamia is typically of a primitive 3-colpate type.  相似文献

The pollen grains of 69 specimens representing 44 species or supposed species of the genus Waltheria L. have been studied. Based mainly on differences in exine characters 2 pollen types, a spinulose and a suprareticulate one were pointed out. Both types show ± parallel trends in the development of the aperture system to an increase of aperture number, to a shortening of the colpi and to more distinct bounds and nexine thickenings of the ora. They exemplify important steps of aperture evolution, which in the spinulose type leads from zonocolporate by way of zonopororate to pantopororate and in the suprareticulate type from zonocolporate to pantocolporate grains. The tendencies of sporoderm evolution concern a more distinct morphological and partially also a regional differentiation of the exine elements (bacula, spinulae), which prove to be close correlated with the evolution levels of the apertures. According to the pollen morphological point of view the species of the genus Waltheria are to be arranged in two groups, which may be regarded as two related, but relative independent phyletic entities. These evidences speak in favour of a taxonomic  相似文献

Pollen grains from 15 species (18 taxa) of the genus Filipendula were examined with light and scan-ning electron microscopy. It was revealed that the pollen grains are isopolar, tricolporate, with scabrate or scabrate-microechinate surface. The pollen morphology was compared with the conventional classification sys-tems of the genus by different authors, and supported Shimizu's system (1961), in which the genus was divided into three subgenera. The monotypic subgen. Hypogyna is characterized by pollen lacking fastigium and thickened costae colpi. The other monotypic subgen. Filipendula differs from others by pollen having larger grain, larger pore size, longitudinally elliptic fastigium and thickened costae colpi. The largest subgen. Ulmaria is distinguished by pollen having rounded or latitudinally elliptic fastigium and thickened costae colpi. Sectional classification was not supported by the pollen morphology due to insufficient variability.  相似文献

This study used pollen morphology to address taxonomic controversies related to several species belonging to subgenus Hebeclada of the genus Polygala (Polygalaceae). According to the last traditionally accepted revision of this subgenus, it comprises 40 species. Nevertheless, a recent taxonomic treatment applying more comprehensive criteria reduced this number to only nine species. Our work focused on 15 traditionally accepted species that occur in Brazil, fourteen of which have been considered as only six species in this recent taxonomic study. Pollen grains from floral buds at pre‐anthesis were collected from herbarium specimens and analysed using both visible light and scanning electron microscopy. Most of the traditionally accepted species were distinguished by different combinations of several pollen‐related features, in particular colpi number (13 or 15), pollen size and shape, and endoaperture type (endocingulate or not) and arrangement (parallel or sinuous). The species accepted in the recent taxonomic treatment could not be discriminated by pollen characters. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 157 , 609–619.  相似文献

Pollen morphology of 36 species representing 14 genera within the tribe Rhinantheae in the family Orobanchaceae was studied and illustrated with light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Five major pollen types were recognized on the basis of exine ornamentation. Within these major types, minor types (subtypes) were distinguished based on exine surface pattern, size, shape, amb form, colpi and colpus membrane. These types and subtypes are as follows: type I. retipilate: subtype Ia. regular retipilate: (1) pollen size < 27 μm, (2) pollen size > 27 μm, subtype Ib. irregular retipilate; type II. verrucate: subtype IIa. macro-verrucate, subtype IIb. verrucate, subtype IIc. sparse verrucate; type III. retirugulate; type IV. granulate; type V. micro-reticulate. A key to pollen morphology of genera studied within the Rhinantheae was made based on pollen morphology from our study and earlier work. Combining with other sources of information on the Rhinantheae, the systematic relationships of this tribe are discussed. Rhinantheae pollen displays considerable variation between genera and species, with taxonomically significant characters at genus and species level. Palynological characteristics provide evidence for interpreting the conflicting views concerning the “Pterygiella Complex”. The evolutionary trend in exine sculpture of Rhinantheae could be proposed, namely that retipilate sculpturing which is the most widespread type is more primitive than the other types (such as foveolate, granulate, regulate, reticulate, retirugulate and verrucate). The pollen data in present study and the view of Hong (1986), as well as the molecular data from Bennett and Mathews (2006) indicated that Asia and related regions were likely to the origin centre of the tribe Rhinantheae.  相似文献
