1. Phosphate uptake kinetics and uptake rates were calculated for planktonic (phytoplankton and bacterioplankton) and benthic (epiphyton and epipelon) assemblages in a large, shallow, subtropical lake. Samples were taken bimonthly over the period of 1 year at three different sites to examine spatial and temporal variability in these processes. 2. Two of the sites, located at the edge of the littoral zone next to the open water (ecotone sites), had low irradiance at the sediment surface and high total phosphorus (TP) concentration (annual mean TP = 112 μg L–1). The third site, located in the littoral marsh zone, had high irradiance at the sediment surface and low TP concentration (annual mean TP = 7 μg L–1). 3. Based on 32P-PO4 turnover time, P availability varied temporally and spatially. At the two high TP ecotone sites, P concentration was lowest in July and August. At the low TP marsh site, P limited algal production throughout the year. 4. The quotient of maximum uptake rate to half saturation constant (Vm/Ks) in the plankton increased by over two orders of magnitude during the P-limited (summer) period at the two ecotone sites, suggesting that plankton used the scarce phosphorus more efficiently. The specific uptake rate of plankton was significantly greater than that of periphyton at all sites, suggesting that the plankton were more efficient than periphyton at taking up phosphate. 5. Periphyton biomass, as well as absolute and percentage P uptake rate, was greater at the marsh site than at the ecotone sites, despite the lower P concentrations in the marsh. This was probably a result of rapid nutrient cycling, combined with high light availability in the marsh.  相似文献

报道了浮游生物物群落多样性指数与水质关系及初步分析了东昌湖的水质情况。2004年4月至2005年3月,采用PFU法及化学检测法对国内第二大人工湖——山东东昌湖的三个湖区9个采样点的浮游生物及水化学指标进行了初步调耷。共观察到浮游藻类76种,其中污染指示种为17种;原生动物92种,其中污染指示种为21种。浮游生物物种组成的多样性指数及化学水质分析显示,各湖区水质优劣程度依次为南湖区〉东南湖区〉西北湖区,调查结果表明东昌湖属于富营养化水体。  相似文献

This report summarizes the results of summer studies of five soft water lakes, five hard water lakes and six calcareous spring ponds in Wisconsin with respect to the composition of the plankton and aufwuchs communities and the relative role of desmids in those communities. The results are compared with similar data obtained from selected acid bog lakes, alkaline bog lakes and closed bogs. Soft water lakes harbored a greater aufwuchs and plankton desmid diversity than hard water lakes or spring ponds; however, diversity in acid bog lakes was substantially greater than in any other lake type. Utricularia contained the greatest desmid diversity and population density in every lake where it occurred. Staurastrum was the most prevalent genus in the plankton and it was the only one recorded from hard water lakes and calcareous spring ponds. Desmid aufwuchs population densities were roughly comparable in hard water lakes, soft water lakes and acid bogs and the contribution of desmids to the total aufwuchs population was similar for the latter two lake types. However, the plankton of acid bog lakes generally harbored substantially greater desmid populations and these populations contributed much more to the total population than in any other lake type. Aufwuchs data are presented for several hosts and comparisons of population densities are given among hosts within a given lake and between the same host in different lakes of a given type. 1. The temporal abundance and composition of the plankton of a continental Antarctic lake (Lake Druzhby) situated in the Vestfold Hills, Eastern Antarctica was investigated from December 1992 to December 1993. The system was dominated by microbial plankton (cyanobacteria, heterotrophic bacteria and protozoans) with few metazoans. 2. Chlorophyll a concentrations ranged between 0.15 and 1.1 μg l–1 and showed highest levels from late winter to spring. 3. Heterotrophic bacteria ranged between 75 and 250 × 106 l–1 with highest abundances in late winter/spring. Mean bacterial biovolumes showed considerable seasonal variation (0.05–0.31 μm3). Largest biovolumes occurred in summer and this was the time of highest community biomass. 4. Heterotrophic nanoflagellates reached highest abundances in late summer (maximum 14 × 105 l–1). Their mean biovolume also exhibited considerable seasonal variation, ranging between 1.77 and 27.0 μm3, with largest size resulting in community biomass peaking in early summer. Ciliated protozoa were poorly represented and sparse. Phototrophic nanoflagellates were sparse in this lake; instead the phototrophic plankton was dominated by a small rod-shaped cyanobacterium which constituted the largest carbon pool in the system. It was common throughout the year, its biomass peaking in autumn. Its presence is discussed in relation to lake morphometry and light climate. 5. Heterotrophic flagellate grazing rates ranged from 6.78 bacteria cell–1 day–1 at 2 °C to 11.8 bacteria cell–1 day–1 at 4 °C. They remove around 2% of the bacterial carbon pool per day during summer and winter. 6. Nutrient levels were low and recorded in pulses. Dissolved and particulate organic carbon were also low, usually less than 3 mg l–1 and 600 μg l–1, respectively. The carbon pools were derived from autochthonous sources. This lake system is driven by bottom-up forces and lacks top-down control, which fits into the picture currently seen for continental Antarctic lakes.  相似文献

The main focus of this study was to investigate the effects of lime treatment with Ca(OH)2 on a hypereutrophic hardwater lake (Lake Alserio, Northern Italy), focusing on its impact on plankton communities. We performed a mesocosm experiment using two large enclosures, one for treatment and one control, in the lake. The addition of Ca(OH)2 proved to be effective in reducing phosphorus concentration, but the effect was limited in time. Redissolution of the precipitating calcium carbonate as it came into contact with the deep water determined a phosphorus increase about 2 weeks after the liming. The liming had a strong impact on the plankton assemblage, as was demonstrated by the sharp decrease in phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass and density, and 1 month after the treatment we observed a different taxonomic composition inside the enclosure from that of the lake. The result of the experiment showed that liming with Ca(OH)2 can be regarded as a suitable treatment for accelerating recovery of the lake. Multiple treatments will be necessary to improve the trophic level over a longer period.  相似文献

鄱阳湖是中国第一大淡水湖,具有"丰水为湖,枯水为河"的独特特点。为探讨鄱阳湖浮游甲壳动物群落结构及其时空分布的特征,于2009年全年采集其不同季节、不同水位期的浮游甲壳动物样品进行定量分析。结果显示,鄱阳湖浮游甲壳动物群落结构总体与河流浮游甲壳群落具有相似性。无节幼体、象鼻溞、剑水蚤等河流优势类群在鄱阳湖浮游甲壳动物中占优势;而哲水蚤和溞属仅在低水位季节占优势,枝角类丰度仅在高温、高水位、流速缓的季节高过桡足类。丰水期浮游甲壳动物平均丰度和生物量远远高于枯水期,可达枯水期的50倍,差异极其显著(P0.01)。温度和水位变化引起的环境因子改变是导致鄱阳湖浮游甲壳动物发生季节演替的主要原因;而营养盐对浮游甲壳动物的影响并不显著。空间上浮游甲壳动物群落构成明显不同,年均丰度最高和最低的点均出现在河口地区。因此:对于换水周期短,水交换速率快的水体,应该充分考虑水文条件对生物的影响。  相似文献

Common seasonal plankton succession patterns in temperate lakes are well understood, and were described in the popular PEG-model. Seasonal plankton succession in warm-water lakes, however, is not as well known. Recent theory suggests that some lake systems are characteristic of having alternate system-states, where one of the system-states is characterized by dominance of cyanobacteria, and transition between system-states can be abrupt and undeterminable. Lake Somerville, a shallow, well-mixed, warm-water reservoir located in eastern TX, U.S.A., experiences occasional periods of cyanobacteria dominance. To increase our understanding of seasonal plankton dynamics in warm-water systems, we analyzed 14-years of plankton data spanning a 22-year period. During this period, succession dynamics characteristic of those described by the PEG-model were observed, as well as succession dynamics expected during periods of cyanobacteria dominance, i.e., greater accumulated phytoplankton biovolume, low secondary productivity, and low light penetration. In addition to the PEG-model and cyanobacteria type system-states, other states of the system that were intermediate between these were observed. Therefore, we conclude the lake does not behave according to the alternate system-states model. The change from year to year in early-year cyanobacteria dominance was abrupt and non-monotonic during this period. In addition, the early year performance of cyanobacteria appeared to influence the plankton succession trajectory for the remainder of the season. While the magnitude of lake-flushing early in the year accounted for ~37% of variability in cyanobacteria prevalence, many of the traditional factors impacting cyanobacteria dominance appeared insignificant.  相似文献

Production-to-respiration (P:R) ratio was estimated at an offshore site of Lake Biwa in order to examine whether the plankton and benthic community is subsidized with allochthonous organic carbon, and to clarify the role of this lake as potential source or sink of carbon dioxide. The respiration rate of protozoan and metazoan plankton was calculated from their biomass and empirical equations of oxygen consumption rates, and that of bacterioplankton was derived from their production rate and growth efficiency. In addition, the carbon mineralization rate in the lake sediments was estimated from the accumulation rate of organic carbon, which was determined using a 210Pb dating technique. On an annual basis, the sum of respiration rates of heterotrophic plankton was comparable to net primary production rate measured by the 13C method. However, when the mineralization rate in the lake sediments was included, the areal P:R ratio was 0.89, suggesting that Lake Biwa is net heterotrophic at the offshore site with the community being subsidized with allochthonous organic carbon. Such a view was supported by the surface water pCO2 that was on average higher than that of the atmosphere. However, the estimate of net CO2 release rate was close to that of carbon burial rate in the sediments. The result suggests that the role of Lake Biwa in relation to atmospheric carbon is almost null at the offshore site, although the community is supported partially by organic carbon released from the surrounding areas.  相似文献

The photosynthesis of plankton sampled from the eutrophic Lake Loosdrecht was studied in Laboratory Scale Enclosures (LSEs) with regard to the rate of mixing. First, two LSEs were operated at different mixing rates. No significant differences in photosynthetic performance were found, with the exception of a depressed photosynthesis in the afternoon in the LSE which had a low mixing rate. Secondly, when mixing was stopped, the phytoplankton which stayed in the dark due to the steep light gradient in the LSE responded by changing its maximal photosynthetic capacity. The results show that the filamentous cyanobacteria in the lake can respond rapidly to changes in the depth of the mixed layer by altering their photosynthetic performance.This is publication 567 of the Centre for Estuarine and Coastal Ecology.  相似文献

For a period of one year (March 1987 to February 1988), the incidence of Escherichia coli was determined in water, sediment and plankton collected from two sampling sites in a freshwater lake extensively used by humans and animals. Densities of E. coli associated with plankton was the lowest while sediments, especially at site 2, harbored high densities of the organism. Correlation coefficients revealed that the density of E. coli in water samples was linearly correlated to temperature, pH of water, sediment and humidity. Stepwise multiple regression analysis, however, showed that sediment temperature was the dominant variable which could explain 27% of the observed variation in the numbers of E. coli in the overlying waters (p = less than 0.001). Of the 150 environmental E. coli strains which were characterized, 31 (20.7%) were found to belong to the classic enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) serogroups. Seven of the serogroups among the environmental EPEC strains were also encountered from EPEC strains isolated from human cases during a concurrent clinical study. None of the 150 environmental strains were enterotoxigenic or enteroinvasive but 4 strains possessed HEp-2 cell adhesive factor. With the exception of one, all the EPEC strains isolated were multi-drug resistant. From this study, it was evident that the lake is an important source of infection of EPEC and other related diarrheagenic E. coli.  相似文献

The lake sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens, is a threatened species across most of its range. To understand any potential shifts in diet across season or habitat, stomach contents were examined from juvenile lake sturgeon caught in the Winnipeg River, Manitoba, Canada. This information will aid in assessment of environmental impacts and conservation initiatives for this threatened species. From 2006 to 2008 gut contents were collected from juvenile lake sturgeon using a non‐lethal gastric lavage methodology. Juvenile lake sturgeon were sampled from four discrete deep water habitat types (13.7–27.4 m depths), during the months of May, June, July and October. In total, 13 066 prey items belonging to 14 prey groups were collected from 345 juvenile lake sturgeon (251–835 mm TL). Overall, juvenile lake sturgeon consumed a low diversity of organisms; insect larvae from three invertebrate orders, Trichoptera, Diptera and Ephemeroptera, accounted for 97.4% of the total numeric abundance of prey items recovered. A relationship between size of juvenile lake sturgeon and prey quantity or type was not observed. Diet of juvenile lake sturgeon varied in relation to season, with Diptera (77.6%) being the most abundant prey in May, Trichoptera the most abundant in June (n = 3,056, 60.4%) and July (n = 2,055, 52.6%). During October, 96% of stomachs examined were empty. In terms of habitat type, the standardized abundance of invertebrate prey items was highest in deep water habitats characterized by medium water velocity (depths > 13.7 m) and coarse substrate (particle sizes > 0.063 mm) in May and June when compared to deep water habitats characterized by low water velocity (<0.2 m.s?1) and fine substrate (particle sizes < 0.063 mm). However, in July, the opposite was observed and prey abundance in juvenile lake sturgeon stomachs decreased with increasing particle size. Results suggest a high degree of dietary overlap among juvenile lake sturgeon from multiple size/age classes occupying deep‐water habitats of the Winnipeg River.  相似文献

The distribution of stomatocysts of chrysophyte algae in the plankton of bodies of water of different types in the basin of the middle reach of the Irtysh (at the Omsk Region), as well as in the plankton and in fouling of the deep-water oligotrophic lake Teletskoe (Gorny Altai) has been considered. The classification of morphotypes of stomatocysts has been carried out. The number of morphotypes found in plankton samples from bodies of water of the middle Irtysh basin is 30 and, in Lake Teletskoe, 60. Four similar morphotypes of cysts were revealed for the bodies of water under investigation.  相似文献

Sources of pollution at the north end of Lake Tanganyika are concentrated around Bujumbura, Burundi. The impact of River Ntahangwa on the water quality of this part of Lake Tanganyika was compared with that of an unpolluted river, the Mugere. A shallow bay, not influenced by a river, was used as a reference station. Chemical analyses were carried out at four week intervals during nearly a year. Samples were taken at different distances from the shore and at different depths. River impact was detected up to 100 m from both river mouths. Even at 50 m from the mouth of the polluted River Ntahangwa, no important decrease of dissolved oxygen was detected. Chlorophyll-a maxima were found 100 m from the Ntahangwa mouth, but this was also the case 100 m from shore in the unpolluted bay. Lake water at 60 m depth was saturated with oxygen during the dry season, as it used to be in 1956. The rivers studied descent initially within the lake due to greater sediment load and lower water temperature. Nevertheless, it appears that these rivers mix completely in the lake within 100–300 m from the river mouths. The direct effects from organic pollution of the Ntahangwa on the lake seem to be rather negligible. Appropriate anti-erosion measures should reduce massive sediment discharge into the lake.  相似文献

Enzymatic phosphate release was studied in water from three small lakes in the subarctic region of northern Sweden. Free dissolved hydrolytic enzymes were shown to release considerable amounts of phosphate from autoclaved lake water. It was possible to show that phosphate was enzymatically released from particulate matter by exposure of autoclaved, 32P-labelled plankton to lake enzymes followed by characterization of degradation products with gel chromatography. Seston turned out to be vitally important as a phosphorus source for planktic organisms since plankton inoculated in lake water freed from seston were shown to produce high activities of phosphatase.  相似文献

During the last roughly 100 years (1881–1989) some noteworthy changes have occurred in the planktonic Cladocera taxocene of the lake Popradské pleso (High Tatra Mts., Czecho-Slovakia). Primarily, in course of the twenties up to the fifties of our century Daphnia pulicaria and Polyphemus pediculus, and later also Holopedium gibberum, disappeared from the plankton of the lake. Conversely, approximately from the mid-seventies, Daphnia longispina has become a constituent of the lake plankton. In spite of lacking data on the principal parameters of the abiotic and biotic environment from the past, the author assumes that probably the most important factor responsible for the changes referred to were fluctuations in the predation pressure of fish. Besides, organic pollution might have played a definite but less important role.  相似文献

Events in the plankton community of a 120 ha, shallow (1.2 m), brackish lake have been studied with the help of two watertight enclosures, each of which isolated about 300 m3 of water and its underlying sediment. Analyses of soluble reactive phosphorus, total phosphorus, ammonia-N, nitrate-N, silicate-Si, chloride, photosynthetic pigments, phytoplankton and zooplankton counts are reported and are related to inputs of nitrogen and phosphorus into the lake from adjoining basins and the catchment, and to the hydrologic regime. The inputs of phosphorus are budgeted and a very large roost of black-headed gulls appears to provide most of the phosphorus supply. The results are discussed with reference to the eutrophication of the lake and decline of aquatic macrophytes which have occurred in the past ten years.  相似文献

Whereas many studies have addressed the mechanisms driving partial migration, few have focused on the consequences of partial migration on trophic dynamics, and integrated studies combining the two approaches are virtually nonexistent. Here we show that temperature affects seasonal partial migration of cyprinid fish from lakes to predation refuges in streams during winter and that this migration in combination with temperature affects the characteristics and phenology of lower trophic levels in the lake ecosystem. Specifically, our six‐year study showed that the proportion of fish migrating was positively related to lake temperature during the pre‐migration growth period, i.e. during summer. Migration from the lake occurred later when autumn water temperatures were high, and timing of return migration to the lake occurred earlier at higher spring water temperatures. Moreover, the winter mean size of zooplankton in the lake increased with the proportion of fish being away from the lake, likely as a consequence of decreased predation pressure. Peak biomass of phytoplankton in spring occurred earlier at higher spring water temperatures and with less fish being away from the lake. Accordingly, peak zooplankton biomass occurred earlier at higher spring water temperature, but relatively later if less fish were away from the lake. Hence, the time between phyto‐ and zooplankton peaks depended only on the amount of fish being away from the lake, and not on temperature. The intensity of fish migration thereby had a major effect on plankton spring dynamics. These results significantly contribute to our understanding of the interplay between partial migration and trophic dynamics, and suggest that ongoing climate change may significantly affect such dynamics.  相似文献

The present study describes generally the ecosystem of Lake Verevi while more detailed approaches are presented in the same issue. The main task of the article is to estimate long-term changes and find the best method for the restoration of good ecological status. Lake Verevi (surface 12.6 ha, mean depth 3.6 m, maximum depth 11 m, drainage area 1.1 km2, water exchange 0.63-times per year) is a hypertrophic hard-water lake located in town Elva (6400 inhabitants). Long-term complex limnological investigations have taken place since 1929. The lake has been contaminated by irregular discharge of urban wastewaters from oxidation ponds since 1978, flood from streets, and infiltrated waters from the surrounding farms. The so-called spring meromixis occurred due to extremely warm springs in recent years. The index value of buffer capacity of Lake Verevi calculated from natural conditions is on the medium level. Water properties were analysed according to the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive. According to the classification, water quality as a long-term average of surface layers is moderate-good, but the water quality of bottom layers is bad. Values in deeper layers usually exceed 20–30 times the calculated reference values by Vighi and Chiaudani’s model. Naturally, at the beginning of the 20th century the limnological type of the lake was moderately eutrophic. During the 1980s and 1990s the ecosystem was out of balance by abiotic characteristics as well as by plankton indicators. Rapid fluctuations of species composition and abundance can be found in recent years. Seasonal variations are considerable and species composition differs remarkably also in the water column. The dominating macrophyte species vary from year to year. Since the annual amount of precipitation from the atmosphere onto the lake surface is several times higher, the impact of swimmers could be considered irrelevant. Some restoration methods were discussed. The first step, stopping external pollution, was completed by damming the inlet. Drainage (siphoning) of the hypolimnetic water is discussed. Secondary pollution occurs because Fe:P values are below the threshold. The authors propose to use phosphorus precipitation and hypolimnetic aeration instead of siphoning.  相似文献
