The composition and abundance of the macroscopic biota of a sandy-bottom Zostera marina community at a depth of 3–5 m were studied in Tvärminne, S Finland, in 1968–1971. Zostera occurred contagiously and very sparsely, 6 ± 2 shoots · m−2, ash-free dry weight (AFDW) 2 ± 1 g · m−2 (95% confidence interval). Totals of 45 plant and 70 animal taxa were found. Fucus vesiculosus (80%) and Zostera marina (11%) dominated the plant biomass, 16.5 ± 17.8 g · m−2 in June 1971. At this time animal density was 8540 ± 830 ind. · m−2 (0.6-mm mesh) and AFDW 17.3 ± 5.0 g · m−2, 80–90% of the latter consisting of Macoma baltica, Mya arenaria, Corophium volutator, Nereis diversicolor and Hydrobia spp. The same percentage of animal density was made up by Hydrobia spp., M. baltica, C. volutator and Pygospio elegans. Normal analysis by classification of the samples suggested that the community was spatially rather homogeneous in 1971. Inverse analysis, based on interspecific correlations, revealed three distributional groups of species. These groups corresponded to the compositional subdivisions suggested by normal analysis. The community was subdivided into strata characterized by (D) deposit feeders, (Z) Zostera marina and (F) Fucus vesiculosus. The periodicity of the biota in the Zostera-characterized stratum was investigated. The principal dominants, especially Fucus, Zostera and Macoma, showed no distinct seasonal or interannual differences in 1968–1971, which made the community seem very stable. Yet, the species diversity of plants varied with the abundance of filamentous algae. Animal species diversity and mean animal density reached their seasonal minima in late summer, when the parental stocks of many invertebrates were dying and the summer's offspring were often still too small to be obtained by our methods. The recruitment of many important animal species failed in 1968 as compared with the other years.  相似文献

Productivity of Podostemum ceratophyllum, the dominant aquatic macrophyte in the New River, was measured at four sites representing soft- and hardwater reaches of the river. Available dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was 4–5 times greater in the hardwater reach. The difference in available DIC was reflected in standing crop and productivity of P. ceratophyllum. Maximum standing crops of P. ceratophyllum at the two hardwater sites (Sites 1 and 2) were 244.8 ± 30.7 g ash-free dry wt (AFDW) m−-2 and 193.8 ± 18.7 g AFDW m−-2 compared to 128.5 ± 14.9 g AFDW m−-2 and 101.3 ± 6.9 g AFDW m−-2 for the softwater sites (Sites 3 and 4). Productivity, based on differences in standing crops, was: Site 1, 1.08 ± 0.12 g C m−-2 d−-1; Site 2, 0.86 ± 0.08 g Cm−-2d−-1; Site 3,0.58 ± 0.06 g C m−-2 d−-1; Site 4,0.45 ± 0.03 g C m−-2 d−-1. Corresponding values for productivity as 14C uptake were: 2.77 ± 0.44 g C m−-2 d−-1; 2.10 ± 0.45 g C m−-2 d−-1; 0.34 ± 0.04 g C m−-2 d−-1; 0.28 ± 0.03 g C m−-2 d−-1. Productivity/biomass (P/B) based on 14C uptake and standing crop revealed that P. ceratophyllum productivity was inhibited at the softwater sites perhaps due to carbon limitation. Because of its abundance and its high productivity, P. ceratophyllum is hypothesized to contribute significantly to the New River organic matter budget.  相似文献

Populations of A. aquaticus were sampled quantitatively in 1979–82 at two localities in the river Suså which has a slope of <1 m km−1 and large variations in macrophyte biomass, discharge and stream velocity. The latter two differed significantly between years. A. aquaticus had (1)−2 life cycles per year and summer and winter cohort production intervals of 85 and 290 days. Populations of A. aquaticus varied between 0 and 28,000 ind. m−2 with an exponential increase in the spring and an exponential decrease in the autumn-winter. The A. aquaticus rate of decrease varied between 0.62 and 5.61 % d−1 and increased with increasing rate of elimination of the macrophyte biomass Differences between the two localities were due to differences in physical heterogeneity. Production varied between 2.8 and 9.1 g DW m−2 yr−1 and between 12.9 and 55 g DW m−2 yr−1 at the two localities and P/B ratios were 7.4–9.9 yr−1. Physical limitations are thought to be most important for the populations of A. aquaticus in the Suså, and the macrophyte biomass played an important role in modifying the physical environment. Differences between streams and lake populations are discussed.  相似文献

Summary An outline has been given of the soft-bottom macrozoobenthic research in Lake Grevelingen, after its creation in 1971. A faunistic study aims at assessing the effect of the closure of the former estuary on the species composition, diversity, and distribution of the benthic macrofauna. The main project is a study into the biomass and production of the macrozoobenthos, in order to estimate its role in the carbon cycle in the lake.As regards the faunistic work, a preliminary species-balance has been presented for molluscs and polychaetes. The total number of mollusc species hardly changed after the closure, the number of polychaetes decreased with about one quarter. Nearly all disappeared species were rare or rather scarce in the Grevelingen estuary and most of them may be regarded as typical North Sea species. Several newcomers have also been recorded after the closure. The strong river influence in the former estuary causing wide salinity fluctuations, possibly selected for more hardy species, and these species obviously are able to survive quite well in the present brackish lake.Mean mollusc biomass in April decreased in the first years after the closure. In 1973 it amounted to only 11 g ash-free dry weight.m–2. In view of the preliminary estimate for 1977 (over 50g ash-free dry weight.m–2) a recovery has taken place.Up till 1976 polychaete biomasses were assumed to be unimportant in Lake Grevelingen, reason to ignore them in benthic production studies. A survey with a Van Veen bottom grab seemed to confirm this: mean April biomass in 1977 was only 2.6 g ash-free dry weight.m–2. However, especially in coarser sediments this bottom grab inadequately samples the bottom fauna. Diver-taken cores proved that, on average, polychaetes live deeper than molluscs and are relatively much more underestimated with the Van Veen grab. Moreover, sieving techniques used are not appropriate for many of the fragile polychaete species. In a special polychaete research at three permanent stations a mean annual biomass of 7.5–12.4 g ash-free dry weight was estimated. Mainly based on P/B ratios from the literature a conservative production estimate for these three stations gave values of 16–25 g ash-free dry weight.m–2.yr–1. This indicates an important role for polychaetes in the benthic ecosystem of Lake Grevelingen.  相似文献

Duckweed, Lemna gibba, was grown in 12 m2 shallow ponds in the Negev desert, during 12 months of continuous cultivation, beginning April 1984. Average monthly growth rates varied with the season of the year. The lowest daily yield, 2·6±0·4 g dry weight m−2 day−1, was obtained during January. Highest daily yields, 7·9±2·6 g dry weight m−2 day−1 and 7·0±1·2 g dry weight m−2 day−1, were obtained during September and May. A 35% decline of the yield was seen during midsummer (July), 4·8±1·2 g dry weight m−2 day−1. The average rate for the year was 5·15±1·7 g dry weight m−2 day−1. The protein content of the plants ranged from 30 to 38% per unit dry weight.Growth performance is discussed in relation to the prevailing climatic conditions.  相似文献

The structure of macroinvertebrate communities was studied at I I sampling sites of the outlet of Lake Belau in the lowlands of northern Germany. To describe the structures of macrobenthic animal communities three different units were examined: abundance, biomass, and secondary production. 112 taxa were collected from the entire stream. The numbers of species ranged from 31 (fine sand) to 70 (submerged macrophytes). For the stream, average macroinvertebrate density was 18.400 ind. M−1. Density was highest at the macrophytes amounting to 35,630 individuals per m2, and lowest in the pure sand with only 3,900 ind. M−2. Average biomass (dry mass) was 194 g DM m−2 varying from 9.8 (peat) to 381 g DM m−2 (gravel with mollusk shells near the upstream lake). For the stream, average annual production was 129 g DM m−2 varying from 15 (peat) to 286 g DM m−2 (macrophytes). The highest values for each unit were found in stream sections with gravel and submerged macrophytes. Lower values occured in sections that contained peat and sand. Usually, a single structure of the macroinvertebrate community was dominated by less than ten taxa, which varied at each sampling site depending on the units observed.  相似文献

Quantitative samples were used to investigate density, biomass and annual production of the benthic invertebrate fauna in a small Danish stream. Forty-eight taxa were found and the total invertebrate densities varied from 3 810 m?2 in July to 20 040 m?2 in December. The total mean annual biomass of the invertebrate fauna was 6.1 g ash-free dry wt m?2. The annual production of the invertebrates was estimated from their mean annual biomass and their annual P/B ratio. Production of the primary consumers (herbivores and detritivores) was 21.4 g ash-free dry wt m?2 y?1 and of secondary consumers (carnivores) 1.1 g m?2 y?1. The amount of invertebrate production available to the trout population and the importance of the species as food for trout are discussed.  相似文献

A pico sized Synechococcus species isolated from Lake Balaton was studied in batch and continuous cultures. This picocyanobacterium had a pH optimum at 8.5 and a temperature optimum at 28-30°C. The Ik value for growth was 52 μEinstein m−2 S−1, the maximum growth rate 2.27 d−1, the half saturation Constant of growth 1.2 μg PO4-P I−1 and the minimal cell quota 1.74 nig P g dry weight−1. The dry weight of cells showed a minimum, the chlorophyll-a/biomass ratio a maximum as a function of growth rate. Above the quota of 3.4 fg P Cell−1 significant amounts of non-reactive dissolved Phosphorous were released.  相似文献

A quantitative study, based on monthly samples taken by divers with 0.1m2 quadrats, was conducted on a benthic community settling coarse sediments in an area exposed to strong water currents. The richness of the community was high both in terms of biomass (270±107 g m–2 in ash-free dry weight) and diversity (ten zoologicals groups for a total of 98 species). Three suspension feeding species were dominant: Ophiothrix fragilis, Urticina felina and Alcyonium digitatum accounted for more than 95% of the total biomass at all sampling periods.Spatial heterogeneity analysis confirmed the role of these three dominant species. Heterogeneity revealed at a scale of 0.1 m2 by dendrograms (qualitative similarity index) or by Factor Correspondence Analysis (FCA) (on biomasses) was due to the strong dispersion of rare species. The influence of the observation scale was visualised by building Rank-Frequency Diagrams using progressively aggregated replicates. The distribution of relative biomasses and the rank of the dominant species always stabilized at scale of 0.4 or 0.5 m2.The three dominant species were overdispersed at a scale of 0.1 m2 compared with a Poisson distribution. Spatial competition among the three species was suggested by their dispersion in the plane of the FCA. Calculation of a multiple linear regression (at the scale of 0.8 m2) showed negative relationships among these dominant species.Temporal homogeneity was indicated (at a scale of 0.8 m2) by dendrograms of species similarities among samples and by FCA performed on total biomasses.  相似文献

A bimonthly sampling of the seaweed-seagrass resource of Mararison Island, Culasi Antique, was undertaken over 1 year to assess the species composition, similarity of taxa, and biomass (dry weight [d.w.] g m?2) at seven localities. A total of 45 species was identified: 17 Chlorophyta, seven Phaeophyta, 15 Rhodophyta, one Cyanophyta and five seagrasses. Except for some Rhodophyta and Syringodium isoetifolium (Ascherson) Dandy, the occurrence of species between stations was not significantly different; however, differences in biomass between sampling time (month) were significant. Identical taxa between stations were determined. The highest (40) and lowest (22) number of species collected were in May and July, respectively. The species were most abundant from March to May (dry months) and sparse from July to September (wet months). The most abundant species were: Sargassum polycystum C. Agardh (399 g m?2) (Phaeophyta), Dictyosphaeria cav-ernosa (Forsskat) Borgesen (43.1 g m?2) (Chlorophyta), Acanthopeitis japonica Okamura (97.2 gm?2) (Rhodophyta) and Thalassia hemprichii (Ehrenberg) Ascherson (1370 g m?2; seagrass). The Phaeophyta were abundant in March, and the Chlorophyta and Rhodophyta in May, while the seagrasses were abundant in September. Some species occurred only during the dry months: two Phaeophyta, nine Chlorophyta and five Rhodophyta. All the seagrasses were found year-round. Almost all of the seaweeds (39/45) were found associated with seagrass. The number of seaweeds in Mararison Island was higher than for seagrasses but the total biomass of the latter was much higher than the combined biomass of the seaweeds.  相似文献

Trophic interactions and cycling of organic carbon within the macroinvertebrate community of a Northern German lowland stream were analyzed based on a compartment model. The network model describes the structure of the food web quantifying biomass, production, and consumption of their elements, of the entire system and between trophic levels. System primary production is 153.7 g C m−2 yr−1 and invertebrate production 53.3 g C m−2 yr−1. Invertebrate consumption amounts to 702.6 g C m−2 yr−1. Main flows are identified between trophic level 1 and 2 and are connected with highly productive compartments. ‘Anodonta and Pseudanodonta’ and Dreissena polymorpha show the highest consumption of all groups with 269.9 g C m−2 yr−1 and 114.1 g C m−2 yr−1, respectively. System consumption is highest on the import from the upstream lake with 532.5 g C m−2 yr−1, sediment detritus with 135.5 g C m−2 yr−1, and primary producers with 25.7 g C m−2 yr−1. The lowest predation pressure is observed for Bivalvia with an ecotrophic efficiency of <10% and highest for Chironomidae with 91%. Approximately 20% of organic matter entering the detritus pool are recycled to the living groups of the system. Transfer efficiencies between discrete trophic levels are generally low except for transfer of detrital material between level I and II.  相似文献

Summary The population densities of snails living in beech litter were studied form March 1968 to April 1969. Litter production over one year was measured and the role of snails in litter disappearance assessed.Snails were extracted from litter using a modified Vágvölgyi (1952) flotation method, extraction efficiencies being 84%. The mean annual population density of the twenty-one species of snail recorded on the main sampling site was estimated at 489/m2. Carychium tridentatum was the most numerous species, with a mean density of 200/m2. Acanthinula aculeata, Punctum pygmaeum and Vitrea contracta also had fairly high mean densities. The mean annual biomass was 699 mg dry wt./m2 or 278 mg ash-free dry wt./m2. Hygromia striolata and Oxychilus cellarius/alliarius were the most important species in terms of biomass on the main site. Within the limits of accuracy imposed by the sampling regime the population densities of four out of five of the species (C. tridentatum, A. aculeata, V. contracta, Retinella pura) studied remained unchanged throughout the year, whereas P. pygmaeum had a significantly higher autumn population. C. tridentatum populations were highly aggregated at all times of the year, most markedly so in June. Other species were aggregated at certain times of the year only. Samples taken from other sites showed total population densities of snails ranging from 185–1082 snails/m2.A total tree litter production of 652 g/m2/annum was recorded of which 584g/m2/annum was of beech material. 72% fell in the October–December period. 58% of the beech litter-fall was leaves, 5.2% bud-scales, 27% fruits and 10% twigs and bark. Summation of appropriate field layer peak standing crops amounted to 23.3 g/m2. This was considered as potential litter and was equivalent to 3.4% of the total litter input. The litter standing on the woodland floor in Septermber 1968 was 2,700 g/m2, hence, assuming a steady state, litter turnover time was estimated as 4.5 years. It was calculated that the total snail population ingested 0.35–0.43% of the annual litter input, of which 49% was assimilated. The role of the individual species is examined in relation to concepts of key species in ecosystem functioning. The possible role of slugs in decomposition processes is also discussed.  相似文献

The composition, temporal and spatial distribution, and productivity of profundal benthos were investigated in a Colorado Front Range reservoir which impounds water diverted from the Western Slope of the Rocky Mountains. Horsetooth Reservoir, 10.6 km × 1.0 km, consists of three basins with depths greater than 50 m connected by two equalizing channels ca. 30 m deep. Water quality parameters did not vary significantly between sites, but temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen varied seasonally. The composition and organic content of sediment exhibited a gradient from inlet to outlet which significantly influenced faunal density and distribution patterns. Although 28 genera of macroinvertebrates were collected, the oligochaetes Tubifex tubifex (Müller) and Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri Claparède comprised 97.6% of the total organisms. Chironomids comprised 2.2%. The relative contribution of chironomids to total biomass decreased with increasing depth; the reverse was true for oligochaetes. Mean annual density ranged from 3,827 to 51,901 total organisms/m2 for six sampling sites. Mean annual biomass varied from 0.16 to 2.3 g ash-free dry wt/m2. Annual turnover ratios ranged from 3.6 to 4.5. Annual production estimates varied from 7.2 to 82.8 kg/ha ash-free dry weight, averaging 39.3 kg/ha or 26.9 kcal/m2.  相似文献

Distribution and abundance of phyto-, zooplankton and benthic organisms in Lake Qarun were investigated during the period from January 1974 to December 1977.Average number of phytoplankton cells was 152,300 cells/L and its biomass was 0.365 g/C/m3; average number of zooplankton was 31.44 × 103/m3 and its biomass was 194.19 mg/m3. The average number of benthic fauna was 19889/m2 and its biomass was 400.22 g/m2 (dry wt.). Therefore, Lake Qarun may be considered as a highly eutrophic body of water.Freshwater planktonic species, that used to inhabit the lake, such as Diaptomus salinus and the cladoceran Moina salinarum, disappeared completely when the salinity of the lake water reached 30–34 However, some Rotatoria were able to withstand the high salinity. The new composition of the zooplankton community shows that the marine zooplankton species include not only Acartia latisetosa and Cirripedia nauplii, but also other species such as Polychaeta, Obelia medusae, etc.The benthos of Lake Qarun is characterised by an intensive growth of few species. The major part (i.e. 93.54% by weight) of bottom fauna in the lake is Mollusca, mainly Cerastoderma glaucum (69·84% by weight).  相似文献

Above-and below-ground biomass of Typha angustifolia L. was sampled monthly for 18 months from a small Texas pond. Maximum above-ground biomass was 2559±284 g AFDW (ash-free dry weight) m−2 in 1983 and 2895±217 g AFDW m−2 in 1984. Peak below-ground biomass for these 2 years was 2506±278 g AFDW m−2 and 2314±226 g AFDW mt-2, respectively. Stepwise multiple linear regression analyses revealed that mean above-ground biomass accrual was related to duration of growing season, cumulative precipitation, cumulative degree days and/or cumulative pan evaporation. The same was not true for below-ground biomass increases. Analysis of covariance revealed that the rates of above-ground biomass production were not significantly different (F test, p < 0.05) between the 1983 and 1984 growing seasons. Below-ground biomass turnover times for 1983 and 1984 were 2.47 and 1.21 years, respectively.  相似文献

We measured carbon (C) stocks and fluxes and vegetation phenology in the world's oldest prairie restoration (∼65 years) and an adjacent prairie remnant in southern Wisconsin from 2001–2004 to quantify structural and functional differences. While the species distributions and frequency differed, the number of species measured per 1 m2 quadrat were not significantly different (15.8±4.4 and 14.1±2.1 for remnant and planted [order for all reported values in abstract]; P=0.29), and the annual average aboveground net primary productivity (271±51 and 330±55 g C m−2) and peak leaf area index (2.9–4.9 m2 m−2) were comparable under similar fire management. Total root biomass was not significantly different in 2002 (1736±1062 and 1690±459 g dry matter m−2) or 2003 (3029±2081 and 2146±898 g m−2), but annual average soil respiration (1229±77 and 1428±24 g C m−2 yr−1) was significantly higher in the restoration (P<0.0001). However, the prairie remnant contained 37% greater soil C (P<0.0001) in the top 25 cm. Soil respiration response to 10 cm soil temperature (Q10) varied with respect to prairie and soil moisture conditions as annual Q10 values ranged from 2.5 to 3.6. We calculated a range of net ecosystem production (NEP) values using estimated heterotrophic respiration and three root turnover values. Average NEP varied from −1.4 to 1.9 and −2.3 to 1.3 Mg C ha−1 yr−1 for the remnant and planted prairies, respectively. While these two prairies share similar structural components and functional attributes, the large uncertainty in NEP casts doubt as to whether we can verify these prairies as C sources or sinks without direct measures of heterotrophic respiration and root turnover. We argue that quantitative studies of C exchange in prairies, which differ in restoration methodology, management intensity, and fire frequency, are needed to solidify the relationship between prairie structure and potentially desired functions such as C sequestration.  相似文献

Physical-chemical conditions, phytoplankton productivity, community structure and productivity of the macroinvertebrate benthic community were determined during 1976–77 in a subtropical reservoir. Physical-chemical results revealed high nitrate and phosphate concentrations with highest values in the riverine segment. Large phytoplankton populations were present during most of the year. Phytoplankton productivity was high, producing an annual mean of 87 mg C · m−3 · h−1 (12 hours light day). High turbidity in the riverine segment limited phytoplankton productivity during winter and spring. Macrobenthos was dominated by chironomids (Chironomus, Procladius, Coelotanypus and Tanypus) and oligochaetes (Limnodrilus). The annual mean benthic population was estimated at 1,626 · m−2 with a mean dry weight of 0.66 g · m−2. Mean benthic species diversity was 1.80. A lacustrine-riverine community gradient was revealed. Benthic productivity was 6.8 g · m−2 · yr−1 (dry weight) with a P: B ratio of 10. A low correlation was observed between benthic and phytoplankton productivity, and between phytoplankton standing crop and benthic macroinvertebrate numbers throughout the reservoir. Algal food supplies had little impact on the benthic community which was composed predominately of species which fed mostly on organic detritus. Stressful conditions caused by low dissolved oxygen concentrations probably inhibited development of the benthic community throughout the reservoir during summer months, while high sedimentation rates limited development in the head waters.  相似文献

We investigated whether rates of net primary production (NPP) and biomass turnover of floating grasses in a central Amazon floodplain lake (Lake Calado) are consistent with published evidence that CO2 emissions from Amazon rivers and floodplains are largely supplied by carbon from C4 plants. Ground‐based measurements of species composition, plant growth rates, plant densities, and areal biomass were combined with low altitude videography to estimate community NPP and compare expected versus observed biomass at monthly intervals during the aquatic growth phase (January–August). Principal species at the site were Oryza perennis (a C3 grass), Echinochloa polystachya, and Paspalum repens (both C4 grasses). Monthly mean daily NPP of the mixed species community varied from 50 to 96 g dry mass m?2 day?1, with a seasonal average (±1SD) of 64±12 g dry mass m?2 day?1. Mean daily NPP (±1SE) for P. repens and E. polystachya was 77±3 and 34±2 g dry mass m?2 day?1, respectively. Monthly loss rates of combined above‐ and below‐water biomass ranged from 31% to 75%, and averaged 49%. Organic carbon losses from aquatic grasses ranged from 30 to 34 g C m?2 day?1 from February to August. A regional extrapolation indicated that respiration of this carbon potentially accounts for about half (46%) of annual CO2 emissions from surface waters in the central Amazon, or about 44% of gaseous carbon emissions, if methane flux is included.  相似文献

The aquatic macroinvertebrates in two freshwater biotopes, viz. aNymphoides peltata-dominated site and a macrophyte-free site, were studied quantitatively in a shallow alkaline oxbow lake of the river Waal, the main branch of the river Rhine in The Netherlands. The research comprised the analysis of water, sediment and macrophyte samples. In the macrophyte-free site Oligochaeta and Nematocera, particularly of the collector gatherer functional feeding group, dominated the prevailing benthic community. The total macroinvertebrate biomass ranged here from 0.3 to 0.9 g ash-free dry weight per m2 of biotope.Species richness, densities, and biomass of macroinvertebrates were considerably higher in the biotope dominated byNymphoides peltata. Many taxa were found associated with the aboveground macrophyte. The sediment compartment, however, contributed most to the total density and biomass of macroinvertebrates. Nematocera and Oligochaeta were the most abundant fauna groups, whereas the largest share in total biomass was provided by clams (Mollusca). The biomass of the total macroinvertebrate community in theNymphoides-dominated site ranged from 6.2 to 7.5 g ash-free dry weight per m2 of biotope. The biomass of the aboveground phytophilous fauna ranged from 0.1 to 0.6 g ash-free dry weight per m2 of biotope. In September, when theNymphoides peltata vegetation was in its senescent phase, the largest numbers and the highest biomass of phytophilous macroinvertebrates were observed. The contribution of the shredder functional feeding group was high in this period. This, and the overall high abundance of fauna with a detritivorous mode of life, indicates the importance of macrophyte detritus as input to food chains.  相似文献

Periphytic biomass in a downriver riffle of the Grand River in Southern Ontario, Canada was measured with concrete-block glass slide samplers from May to December 1971. Average rate of accumulation of periphyton on glass slides was 266.2 mg/m2/day ash-free weight, 120.9 mg/m2/day carbon, 20.4 mg/m2/day nitrogen, or 1.11 mg/m2/day chlorophyll a and on concrete blocks was 590.0 mg/m2/day ash-free weight, 202.9 mg/m2/day carbon, 22.8 mg/m2/day nitrogen, or 2.95 mg/m2/day chlorophyll a. The standing biomass of periphyton on glass slides varied from a maximum of 21.6 g/m2 between May 28 and July 15 to a minimum of 0.7 g/m2 in December with an average of 8.6 g/m2. The biomass on concrete blocks ranged from a high of 132.5 g/m2 in August to a low of 29.9 g/m2 in October with a mean of 66.1 g/m2. The well established periphyton on concrete blocks towards the end of the study period was similar to that from native rocks with respect to biomass, carbon and nitrogen contents, and ratios of biomass to chlorophyll a. This suggests that concrete blocks are a better substrate than glass slides for measuring riverbed periphyton. By comparing biomass of periphyton on slides and on concrete blocks, the average rate of loss of periphyton from concrete blocks was estimated to be 2.9 g/m2/day, representing 63% of the mean total accumulation rate of the periphyton. The magnitude of the estimated total loss and the high standing biomass of the periphyton on concrete blocks manifest the importance of the periphyton as a source of organic matter in the river.  相似文献
