Species diversity and morphological disparity are two measures to examine the diversity of life. Evidence based on the fossil record suggests a complex relation between these two parameters of biodiversity including frequent decoupling of their assembly through time. However, rather few studies explored the correlation of these two measurements by studying extant plant species. This study was designed to explore the accumulation of morphological disparity of the derived Neotropical fern genus Pleopeltis. To explore the relationship of species diversity and morphological disparity, we employed several approaches including divergence time estimates based on DNA sequence variation, reconstruction of character state changes based on a morphological matrix comprising 41 discrete characters, and exploration of the phylomorphospace. Accumulation of species diversity and morphological disparity was found to be concordant although the assumption of independence was not rejected for the accumulation of genetic and morphological variation. The phylomorphospace reconstruction provided further evidence for clade‐specific morphospace expansion that imply developmental pathways and competition among clades as major factors shaping the assembly of morphological disparity over time.  相似文献

The excited state (S1) of sulfononaphthols has a pK value well below that of the ground state, consequently intensive illumination of their aqueous solution should lead to acidification. In this study the second harmonics of a ruby laser pulse (10 MW, 30 ns at 347.2 nm) were used for excitation of a sulfonophthol solution, resulting in a lowering of the pH from 8 to 4. The change in pH was demonstrated by spectral changes of the pH indicators Bromocresol Green, Bromothymol Blue, Bromocresol Purple and Phenol Red. The magnitude of the pH change was calculated from the kinetics of the changes in the indicators' absorbance and from fluorescence intensity of naphtholate.Sulfononaphthols, due to their hydrophylic nature, cannot permeate across phospholipid membranes. Taking advantage of this property, liposomes containing sulfononaphthol were prepared and irradiated by the laser pulse. Evidence is given that under such conditions the change in pH was limited to the space enclosed in the liposomes. The resulting proton-motive force (ΔμH+ = 180?240 mV) is adequate for perturbing the energy-coupled reactions of oxidative phosphorylation.Possible applications of this technique in chemical physics, chemistry, biochemistry and bioenergetics are discussed.  相似文献

A temporally continuous and spatially discrete stochastic model for the spread of an epidemic within some set of holdings is constructed. A recursion formula is given for the probability that a certain set of holdings is infected at a certain moment. Moreover, under an additional condition (which will always be satisfied in practice) a formula for the expected value and the variance of the moment when a certain holding is infected the first time is given.  相似文献

(1) 31P nuclear magnetic resonance was used to measure the creatine kinase-catalysed fluxes in Langendorff-perfused rat hearts consuming oxygen at different rates and using either of two exogenous substrates (11 mM glucose or 5 mM acetate). (2) Fluxes in the direction of ATP synthesis were between 3.5–12-times the steady-state rates of ATP utilization (estimated from rates of O2-consumption), demonstrating that the reaction is sufficiently rapid to maintain the cytosolic reactants near their equilibrium concentrations. (3) Under all conditions studied, the cytosolic free [ADP] was primarily responsible for regulating the creatine kinase fluxes. The enzyme displayed a Km for cytosolic ADP of 35 μM and an apparent Vmax of 5.5 mM/s in the intact tissue. (4) Although the reaction is maintained in an overall steady-state, the measured ratio of the forward flux (ATP synthesis) to the reverse flux (phosphocreatine synthesis) was significantly greater than unity under some conditions. It is proposed that this discrepancy may be a consequence of participation of ATP in reactions other than the PCr /ag ATP or ATP /ag ADP + Pi interconversions specifically considered in the analysis. (5) The results support the view that creatine kinase functions primarily to maintain low cytosolic concentrations of ADP during transient periods in which energy utilization exceeds production.  相似文献

Background

High levels of blood cholesterol are conventionally linked to an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease (Grundy, 1986). Here we examine the molecular mode of action of natural products with known cholesterol-lowering activity, such as for example the green tea ingredient epigallocatechin gallate and a short pentapeptide, Ile-Ile-Ala-Glu-Lys.

Methods

Molecular Dynamics simulations are used to gain insight into the formation process of mixed micelles and, correspondingly, how active agents epigallocatechin gallate and Ile-Ile-Ala-Glu-Lys could possibly interfere with it.

Results

Self-assembly of physiological micelles occurs on the order of 35–50?ns; most of the structural properties of mixed micelles are unaffected by epigallocatechin gallate or Ile-Ile-Ala-Glu-Lys which integrate into the micellar surface; the diffusive motion of constituting lipids palmitoyl-oleoyl-phosphatidylcholine and cholesterol is significantly down-regulated by both epigallocatechin gallate and Ile-Ile-Ala-Glu-Lys;

Conclusions

The molecular mode of action of natural compounds epigallocatechin gallate and Ile-Ile-Ala-Glu-Lys is a significant down-regulation of the diffusive motion of micellar lipids.

General significance

Natural compounds like the green tea ingredient epigallocatechin gallate and a short pentapeptide, Ile-Ile-Ala-Glu-Lys, lead to a significant down-regulation of the diffusive motion of micellar lipids thereby modulating cholesterol absorption into physiological micelles.  相似文献

The kinetic equation of the process of cell dehydration during freezing has been obtained. It is used to assess the degree of protoplasmic supercooling as a function of the cooling rate and cell parameters.The suggested model of dehydration cannot be applied to cells with permeability coefficients for water molecules more than 10?5 cm/sec · bar, in particular to erythrocytes.The peculiarities of intracellular crystallization in red cells have been studied. The results show that red cells are likely to start freezing at cooling rates slower than those supposed from calculations of Mazur (9).  相似文献
