The transfer of animals from the wild into captivity is an important strategy for the conservation of species that are under threat of extinction. To determine the reproductive capability of animals following transfer from the wild, brushtail possums relocated from Brisbane, Adelaide, and Armidale into captivity in Brisbane were monitored. Seventy five percent of the Brisbane possums (N = 80) gave birth during the months from March to May following transfer from the suburbs of Brisbane and 75% of the young born reached weaning. Thirteen adult females and four adult male brushtail possums were relocated from Adelaide into captivity in Brisbane in June 1994. Four young were born in Brisbane, however none survived to weaning and all the relocated possums had died 2 years after their transfer from Adelaide. Seventeen adult females and seven adult male possums were transferred from Armidale to Brisbane in July 1996. In the first year, 1997, four young were born in Brisbane and none survived to weaning. In the second year, three young were born and survived to weaning. Two years after their transfer, one adult male and three adult females from Armidale and three juvenile possums were housed in the Brisbane enclosures. As the Brisbane, Adelaide, and Armidale possums received the same photoperiod and environmental conditions, some factor must have inhibited breeding activity in the Adelaide possums and to a lesser extent in the Armidale possums. The ability of the Armidale possums to give birth and wean their young after 2 years in Brisbane would suggest that relocated possums require up to 2 years in order to adjust sufficiently to their new environment to reproduce. However, the failure of the Adelaide possums to reproduce successfully after a similar period of time in Brisbane suggests that certain environmental differences inhibit the ability of different populations of possums to adjust to a new environment. In Queensland, possums in the wild and in captivity first give birth during March and continue to give birth throughout the year until November. In this study the effect of short daylengths on the initiation of breeding activity was examined. One male and 4 female possums were transferred from an outside enclosure into a light control room (10 h light, 14 h dark) on 22 November. A control group of possums was housed in outside enclosures. The possums held in the light room gave birth 81.2 +/- 14.7 days (s.e.m.) after being placed in the short-day photoperiod. The control group gave birth 133.8 +/- 9.8 days after 22 November. This result suggests that photoperiod plays a role in the initiation of the breeding season of the brushtail possum.  相似文献

Juvenile male Wistar rats were injected i.p. with 0, 20, or 40 mg/kg 3,3',4,4',5,5'-hexabromobiphenyl and blood samples collected periodically up to 28 days. A dose-dependent depression of the serum thyroxine level was detected, while the circulating triiodothyronine concentration was not affected by the biphenyl congener. Thyroxine turnover in vivo 7 days after injection of the 20 mg/kg dose revealed significant increases of various clearance parameters relative to controls. The fractional clearance rate (day-1) increased by 84%, the daily metabolic clearance rate (mL.kg-1.day-1) increased by 128%, and the daily thyroxine disposal rate (ng.kg-1.day-1) increased by 41%. Also, the thyroxine distribution space (mL/kg) increased by 21%. These results indicated greater thyroxine binding in major organs as well as a marked increase in the peripheral metabolism of thyroxine. The increased thyroxine metabolism is explained by a 4.8-fold induction of uridine 5'-diphosphoglucuronyltransferase activity in liver microsomes. The type I 5'-deiodinase activity in liver homogenates and endogenous concentrations of the cofactor for this reaction, glutathione, were not affected by the biphenyl. This result means that homeostatic mechanisms involving thyroxine conversion to triiodothyronine do not explain the maintenance of serum T3 under these conditions.

Abstract: Fertility control is currently under development for the control of brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula), one of New Zealand's most serious vertebrate pests. Despite intensive research into various methods for achieving infertility, including immunocon-traception and disrupting endocrine control of reproduction, researchers know little about the potential effects of these methods on the behavior of wild possums. We assessed the effects of surgically imposed sterility, either to block fertilization (tubal ligation) or to disrupt endocrine control of fertility (gonadectomy), by using radiotelemetry on the movement patterns and site fidelity of wild brushtail possums. In addition, we assessed the effect of gonadectomy on the transmission rate of a commonly occurring, directly transmitted pathogen in possums, Leptospira interrogans serovar balcanica (hereafter L. balcanica), to determine the effect of any behavioral changes on possum contact rates. Both tubal ligation and gonadectomy of females did not appear to have any appreciable effect on behavior, with sterilized females having space-use patterns and fidelity to seasonal breeding ranges similar to those of fertile females. However, gonadectomy of male possums resulted in a significant reduction of 42% and 47% in the 95% and 70% isopleth seasonal breeding ranges, respectively. Furthermore, the transmission rate of L. balcanica in gonadectomized male and female possums was reduced by 88% and 63%, respectively, compared with that in fertile male and female possums. Overall, these results suggest that fertility control, either by blocking fertilization (e.g., immunocontraception) or by disrupting endocrine control of reproduction (e.g., gonadotropin-releasing hormone vaccines), is unlikely to have an impact on social organization and behavior of brushtail possums in ways that may compromise the efficacy of fertility control for reducing population density. However, the reduction in the transmission rate of L. balcanica indicates that fertility control that interferes with endocrine control of reproduction is likely to reduce the contact rate between possums. This could have implications for the control of other wildlife diseases requiring direct contact for transmission.  相似文献

Prolactin (PRL) is a pituitary hormone involved in various physiological processes, including lactation, mammary development, and immune function. To further investigate the in vivo and comparative endocrine roles of PRL, mouse PRL cDNA fused to the cytomegalovirus promoter, was introduced into muscle by direct injection. Previously we studied the function of rat PRL using the same protocol. PRL mRNA was detected in the muscle following injection by RT-PCR and subsequent Southern blot analysis. PRL was also detected and Western blot analysis revealed a relatively high level of serum PRL. In the pCMV-mPRL-injected female mice, the estrous cycle was extended, especially in diestrus stage and the uterus thickening that was shown in normal estrous stage was not observed. In the pCMV-mPRL-injected male mice, new blood vessels were first found at 5 weeks of age and fully developed blood vessels were found after 8 weeks in the testis. The number of Leydig cells increased within the testis and the testosterone level in serum was observed high. Finally, the number of white blood cells (WBCs) increased in the pCMV-mPRL-injected mice. The augmentation of WBCs persisted for at least 20 days after injection. When injection was combined with adrenalectomy, there was an even greater increase in number of WBCs, especially lymphocytes. This increase was returned normal by treatment with dexamethansone. Taken together, our data reveal that intramuscularly expressed mouse PRL influences reproductive functions in female, induces formation of new blood vessels in the testis, and augments WBC numbers. Of notice is that the Leydig cell proliferation with increased testosterone was conspicuously observed in the pCMV-mPRL-injected mice. These results also suggest subtle difference in function of PRL between mouse and rat species.  相似文献

We examined the effects of cage size and testosterone (T) levels on basal and peak metabolic rates (BMR and PMR, respectively) and on pectoral and leg muscle masses of male house sparrows (Passer domesticus). Birds were housed either in small birdcages or in flight aviaries for at least 2 weeks prior to the initial metabolic evaluations. They were then implanted with either empty or T-filled silastic capsules and remeasured 5-6 weeks later. Birds treated with single T implants achieved breeding levels (4-6 ng/mL) and one group given double implants reached 10 ng/mL. There was no effect of T on BMR or PMR in any group studied, but there was an effect of caging. Caged birds showed significant reductions in PMR over the course of captivity, whereas PMR in aviary-housed birds were indistinguishable from their free-living counterparts. Testosterone treatment significantly increased leg muscle mass in caged birds, but had no effect on muscle mass in aviary-housed sparrows. We conclude that testosterone has no direct effect on sparrow metabolic rate or muscle mass, but may interact with cage conditions to produce indirect changes to these variables.  相似文献

Abstract

Den sharing among wild brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) has important implications for disease transmission. This study investigated den sharing in captive possums, and measured interactions between possums sharing dens. Thirty‐four sexually mature possums (16 female, 18 male) were housed in single‐sex or mixed‐sex pairs in large enclosures that contained two dens. Daily patterns of den sharing were recorded for each pair over a 69 day period in the breeding or non‐breeding season. Social behaviour within shared dens was sampled using miniature infrared cameras. Male pairs rarely shared dens in the breeding or non‐breeding seasons (4% and 1% of days respectively) and usually engaged in ‘threats’ and ‘fights’ associated with den defence. Pairs of female possums (in both seasons) and mixed‐sex pairs housed together in the breeding season shared dens most frequently (between 84% and 91% of days), and also spent the most time together in dens each night. While sharing dens, affiliative interactions were frequent, including long periods of ‘touching’, and also ‘food sharing’ and ‘allogrooming’. The preference for den sharing and close contact shown by captive possums highlights the importance of den sharing as a potential route for disease transmission.  相似文献

  • 1.1. The young of the bandicoot and possum are of similar weight at birth (200–250 mg) but by day 50 post-partum have weights of 100 and 20 g, respectively. The aim of this study was to determine whether the disparate growth rate was associated with a difference in the transfer of thyroxine from mother to young.
  • 2.2. Radioactive thyroxine was injected intramuscularly into the lactating female and 24 hr later a blood sample was obtained from the mother and the pouch young removed. The amount of radioactive thyroxine remaining in the blood and within the young was determined.
  • 3.3. The data obtained indicated that milk is a source of thyroid hormones in early pouch life.
  • 4.4. The hypothesis that greater quantities of thyroxine are transferred in the milk of bandicoots than that of brushtail possums is not supported.

Wild animals and captives display physiological and behavioral differences, and it has been hypothesized, but rarely tested, that these differences are caused by sustained elevation of the hormone corticosterone. We used repeated computed tomography (CT) imaging to examine body composition changes in breeding male and female wild house sparrows (Passer domesticus; n = 20) in response to two weeks of captivity, and assessed behavioral changes using video recordings. Half of the birds received the drug mitotane, which significantly decreased stress-induced corticosterone titers compared to controls. Based on the CT images, fat volumes increased, and pectoralis muscle density and heart and testes volumes decreased, over the two weeks of captivity in both groups of birds. However, beak-wiping, a behavior that can indicate anxiety and aggression, showed increased occurrence in controls compared to mitotane-treated birds. While our results do not support the hypothesis that these body composition changes were primarily driven by stress-induced corticosterone, our data suggest that experimentally reducing stress-induced corticosterone may mitigate some captivity-induced behavioral changes. Broadly, our results emphasize that researchers should take behavioral and physiological differences between free-living animals and captives into consideration when designing studies and interpreting results. Further, time in captivity should be minimized when birds will be reintroduced back to the wild.  相似文献

A heterologous double-antibody radioimmunoassay has been validated for prolactin in plasma and pituitary preparations of T. vulpecula. Serial dilutions of crude pituitary homogenates and plasmas from several marsupials and purified prolactin from the tammar, Macropus eugenii, showed parallel dose response curves. In both male and female possums plasma prolactin concentrations increased in response to a single intravenous injection of thyrotrophin releasing hormone. Plasma prolactin concentrations were measured in six lactating females (June-November) and in four non-lactating females (July-October). In the following year prolactin levels were also measured in 11 possums with young less than 50 days old and in 24 possums with young aged between 100 and 145 days. In early lactation prolactin concentrations were low (less than 8 ng/ml) but increased to high levels (greater than 30 ng/ml) by 120 days and remained high until about 160 days of lactation. Thereafter concentrations declined although the young continued to take milk from the mother for a further 30-50 days. The changes in plasma prolactin concentrations throughout lactation are very similar to those described for the tammar, and this unusual pattern appears to be common to marsupials. Non-lactating possums showed no consistent changes in plasma prolactin concentrations between July and October.  相似文献

We have investigated the seasonal changes in food intake, body weight, gonadal volume and plasma concentrations of thyroxine, luteinizing hormone and testosterone in male blackheaded bunting (Emberiza melanocephala) in captivity under natural daylengths at 29° N. The cycles in food intake, body weight and testis size in buntings appeared to be phase related. While the changes in body weight and testicular size were parallel to each other and correspond to the increasing daylengths of spring and early summer, cycle in food intake was almost antiphase to the cycles in body weight and testicular growth and development. Furthermore, buntings showed a distinct seasonal cycle in plasma concentrations of thyroxine, luteinizing hormone and testosterone. It is suggested that these seasonal cycles in buntings are endogenously programmed and their entrainment to the environmental photoperiod ensures the occurrence of different physiological functions at temporally fixed time of the year.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to test for the efficacy of a slow release GnRH-agonist implant (4.7 mg deslorelin, Suprelorin®) in the male cat. Ten toms were implanted sc in the neck. Changes in testosterone (T) secretion, testicular size, body weight and behaviour (mounting, mating, urine marking) were monitored. T concentrations were significantly decreased (P < 0.0001) to basal levels (< 0.1 ng/mL) in 5 of 10 cats after 4 weeks and in all but one tom after 11 weeks (T < 0.1 ng/mL). In this respective tom only partial downregulation with T-values from 0.2 to 0.1 ng/mL was achieved until week 27. In weeks 28 and 32, T concentrations were below 0.1 ng/mL. Compared to pretreatment values, testicular volume was significantly decreased by about 60% in week 12 and about 73% after 36 weeks (P < 0.001). Penile spines disappeared 9.4 ± 1.0 weeks after treatment. Food intake was significantly increased during treatment period (P < 0.001). In all tomcats libido, mating behaviour and urine marking were significantly reduced (P < 0.0001) after an initial stimulation. In one tom, mating an oestrous queen on day 20 after implant administration resulted in pregnancy. Mating of another tom that had T-values between 0.1 and < 0.1 ng/mL since day 24 in week 8 revealed the presence of spermatozoa; however, this mating did not result in pregnancy.Subcutaneous implant administration was well tolerated by all tomcats without sedation or anaesthesia and no treatment related negative effects were observed. These results demonstrate the clinical efficacy of the 4.7 mg deslorelin implants (Suprelorin®) in the tom inducing all castration related effects.  相似文献

We observed the reproductive behavior of the oval squid Sepioteuthis lessoniana in captivity. The male used three different mating behaviors: male-parallel (MP), male-upturned (MU) and sneaking. Male competition over females frequently occurred before and during the female egg-laying period, and the outcome of most fights depended on male body size. Larger males guarded their partners from other males and performed MP mating during the egg-laying period of the paired females. In contrast, there was no pairing and mate guarding in MU mating and sneaking, which were adopted by smaller subordinate males as alternative tactics outside female egg-laying period and during the period, respectively. MP matings were 95% successful, but more than half of MU matings were unsuccessful. Higher mating success in MP mating was achieved through pairing, whereas males in MU mating were less successful because mating attempts without pair formation were often foiled by escape of the female. Sneaking was successful in all cases but occurred less frequently. Spermatophores were attached at the opening of the oviduct in MP mating, whereas they were attached around the female buccal membrane in MU mating and sneaking. Considering the route of egg transportation, higher fertilization success can be expected in MP mating because of the advantageous location of the attached spermatophores. Our results suggest that MP mating is used by larger, paired males during the female egg-laying period, and that MU mating and sneaking are alternative tactics adopted by smaller, subordinate males. These alternative mating behaviors would be conditional strategy dependent on relative body size, because some individual males displayed both MP and MU mating behaviors.  相似文献

In two closely related species, females generally prefer conspecific males over heterospecific males. We found that estrous (but not diestrous) female Syrian hamsters Mesocricetus auratus prefer the odors of conspecific males to odors of Turkish hamsters Mesocricetus brandti . However, female Syrian hamsters are not aggressive toward male Turkish hamsters and will readily mate with them. We hypothesize that many generations in captivity led to a reduction in females' ability to avoid inter-species mating, possibly related to the heightened sexual receptivity observed in Mesocricetus hamsters in captivity. To test this hypothesis, we replicated a study carried out with female Turkish hamsters soon after the current laboratory stock of this species was established. In that study, female Turkish hamsters showed lordosis toward male Syrian hamsters in only 20% of interactions and attacked heterospecific males in 80% of the pairings. Using animals descended from that original colony (after many generations in captivity and certain episodes of inbreeding), 100% of female Turkish hamsters mated with heterospecific males and none showed aggression toward heterospecific males. Thus female avoidance of inter-specific mating may be affected by captive rearing conditions.  相似文献

The minimum body temperatures and the longest torpor bouts recorded for pygmy possums (family Burramyidae) are compared with hibernating representatives from the insectivores, rodents and Australian bats. The lowest body temperatures of pygmy possums are around 6 degrees C which is within the range of the other mammalian groups. The torpor bouts of the pygmy possums last up to two weeks and the durations are similar to those of eutherian hibernators.  相似文献

Eight male naked mole-rats, from three colonies were studied in captivity. When non-breeding male naked mole-rats were removed from their colonies and paired with a non-breeding female, or removed and housed singly for 6 weeks before pairing with a female, concentrations of urinary testosterone and plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) increased significantly (P less than 0.05). Concentration of these hormones were highest while the males were singly housed: urinary testosterone (mean +/- s.e.m.) increased from 8.2 +/- 1.3 ng/mg urinary creatinine (Cr) in a non-breeder in a colony to 49.1 +/- 5.5 ng/mg Cr when singly housed and 21.8 +/- 2.5 ng/mg Cr when paired with a female. Plasma LH concentrations increased from 4.7 +/- 1.0 miu/ml when a non-breeder in a colony to 19.8 +/- 4.0 miu/ml when singly housed and 9.9 +/- 1.1 miu/ml when paired with a female. After pairing with a female, the pattern of urinary testosterone secretion in the male was synchronized with the ovarian cycle of the female mate, such that urinary testosterone concentrations were significantly higher during the early follicular phase of the female's cycle (P less than 0.05). These results suggest that active suppression of reproductive physiology by social cues occurs in non-breeding male naked mole-rats, and that this is readily reversible if social cues are removed and males are housed singly. When a male was subsequently paired with a female, endocrine suppression was partially reimposed on the reproductively active males, such that urinary testosterone concentrations were suppressed to values similar to those in non-breeding males, except for periods prior to mating.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Abstract

Live-trapping and radio-tracking were used to monitor the movements of brush-tailed possums in and around an erosion-control planting of poplars. Possums' use of the planted area was monitored by traffic counters and by marking (with Rhodamine B dye) possums which climbed the poplars. The extent of browse damage to the poplars was also recorded. Over a period of 20 months, 358 individuals were trapped, marked, and released, and 50 were fitted with radio transmitter collars. The study area was mapped into nine 100-m-wide annular zones radiating out from the focus, Zone 0, which contained the poplars. Seventy percent of possums assigned to Zone 1 were caught in Zone 0, but only 24%, 5%, and 0% assigned to Zones 2, 3, and 4–8 respectively were caught in Zone 0. Trapping and radio-tracking revealed no increase in the use of the planted area during the spring flush although the poplars were being damaged. Traces of Rhodamine B dye on the possums showed that 87% of animals caught in Zone 0 had visited the poplars, but only 45%, 10%, and 0% of possums caught in Zones 1, 2, and 3–8 respectively. Possums in this area were sedentary and damage to the poplars during spring was attributed to local animals only. Protection of the poplars by fitting expandable plastic sleeves was found to be more cost-effective than aerial poisoning of the surrounding possum population.  相似文献

Over a period of 8 weeks ram lambs (16 weeks old) were made hyperthyroidal (serum thyroxine approximately equal to 150 ng/ml, compared with control approximately equal to 48 ng/ml) by daily subcutaneous injections of thyroxine or maintained at a constant body weight by restriction of the feed intake. Hyperthyroidal and restricted-intake lambs remained at a constant body weight during the period of treatment whilst control rams gained body weight. Testicular growth was normal in restricted-intake lambs but was suppressed in hyperthyroidal animals. Hyperthyroidism, but not feed restriction, was also associated with decrease in LH pulse frequency (1.3 +/- 0.3/12 h compared with controls 4.8 +/- 0.9/12 h. Hyperthyroidal lambs showed normal LH responses to exogenous LHRH. After cessation of treatment testicular growth continued to be suppressed for up to 16 weeks in previously hyperthyroidic rams; thereafter testes began to increase in size but at 30 weeks after treatment were still smaller than those of control rams. It is concluded that elevated thyroxine concentrations directly influence sexual maturation in ram lambs through actions at hypothalamic and/or higher brain centres which control LH secretion. Transient hyperthyroidism during sexual maturation may cause permanent impairment of sexual development.  相似文献
