The quantitative and qualitative distribution of phytoplankton was investigated along five North–South transects in the eastern Weddell Sea during the transition from late autumn to winter. Relationships with the regional hydrography, progressing sea ice coverage, nutrient distribution and zooplankton are discussed and compared with data from other seasons. To the north of the Antarctic Slope Front (ASF) a remnant temperature minimum layer was found above the primary pycnocline throughout summer. Surface waters had not entirely acquired typical winter characteristics. While temperature was already in the winter range, this was not the case for salinity. Highest biomass of phytoplankton, with the exception of the first transect, was found in the region adjoining the ASF to the north. Absolute chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations dropped from 0.35 to 0.19 g l–1 . Nutrient pools exhibited a replenishing tendency. Ammonium concentrations were high (0.75–2 mol l–1), indicating extensive heterotrophic activity. The phytoplankton in the ASF region was dominated by nanoflagellates, particularly Phaeocystis spp.. North of the ASF the abundance of diatoms increased, with Fragilariopsis spp., F. cylindrus and Thalassiosira spp. dominating. Community structure varied both due to hydrographical conditions and the advancing ice edge. The phytoplankton assemblage formed during late autumn were very similar to the ones found in early spring. A POC/PON ratio close to Redfield, decreasing POC concentration and a high phaeophytin/Chl a ratio, as well as a high abundance of mesozooplankton indicated that a strong grazing pressure was exerted on the phytoplankton community. A comparison between primary production (PP) in the water column and the sea ice showed a shift of the major portion of PP into the ice during the period of investigation.  相似文献

Phytoplankton distribution patterns are still largely unknown for the Pacific region of the Southern Ocean. Pigment distributions were determined by HPLC on 40-m samples collected from the mixed layer during the ANTXII/4 cruise in March–May 1995 aboard RV “Polarstern”. A transect was covered (90°W, from 51°S to 70°S), crossing the Subantarctic Front in the north, the Polar Front, and the Southern Polar Front in the south. Coinciding with high concentrations of silicate, diatoms dominated in the Antarctic waters south of the Polar Front. North of the Polar Front, silicate concentrations dropped to values less than 10 μM. In this area flagellates (Prymnesiophyceae and green algae) were the dominant phytoplankton group. Nutrient depletion of the surface waters near the Southern Polar Front indicated formerly enhanced productivity. These findings confirmed previous observations by the British Sterna expedition, which described locally elevated chlorophyll a biomass near the southern boundary of the Southern Polar Front. We propose a role for supply of bioavailable iron via the front, and emphasise the importance of frontal systems for phytoplankton productivity in the Southern Ocean. The photosynthesis-irradiance relationships (P-I curves) ofnatural plankton samples were studied in the Weddell Sea ice-edgezone, between Elephant Island and South Orkney Islands, duringthe austral summer of 1988–89. Three water bodies weredistinguished in the region: Bellingshausen Sea waters modifiedafter flowing through Drake Passage and Bransfield Strait, WeddellSea waters and Weddell Sea waters modified by melting. The stationssituated in modified Bellingshausen waters showed a net phytoplanktoncomposition which was different from that of the other two waterbodies. Weddell Sea waters and Weddell Sea waters modified bymelting of sea ice had the same net phytoplankton composition. In the area of modified Weddell Sea waters, there was an accumulationof phytoplankton in the upper 40 m (>4 mg Chl m–1).pB, and  相似文献

The population dynamics of Pseudo-nitzschia in relation to environmental factors was investigated from March 2002 to July 2008 in Lim Bay, in the north-eastern Adriatic Sea. Domoic acid was monitored in the breeding population of Mytilus galloprovincialis from 2005 to 2008. The principal-component analysis of environmental parameters showed that the system is mostly temperature driven. The phytoplankton community was mainly composed of diatoms. Pseudo-nitzschia was the dominant diatom, present in 60% of samples, with a maximum (1.6 × 106 cells L−1) contribution up to 97% of the total diatom abundance. Morphological analysis revealed Pseudo-nitzschia manii and potentially toxic Pseudo-nitzschia pseudodelicatissima, Pseudo-nitzschia pungens, Pseudo-nitzschia fraudulenta and Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha as the dominant species in blooms. Pseudo-nitzschia abundance positively correlated to temperature, phosphate and ammonia in accordance with its maximal abundance in the summer/autumn period when fish farms had a maximum impact on the environment. Domoic acid was detected in M. galloprovincialis in concentrations below regulatory limits, ranging from 0.097 to 0.8721 μg g−1 in five cases from April to October 2005 in Lim Bay, but so far it is not clear which of the species was responsible for DA production. This study is also the first record of P. manii, P pungens and P. fraudulenta species in the Adriatic Sea.  相似文献

Summary The effect on adequate sample size and sample volume of the abundances of three predominant copepod species, Metridia gerlachei, Calanus propinquus and Calanoides acutus, were studied in Bransfield Strait (Antarctic Peninsula) in the austral summer of 1988–1989 and waters north of the Weddell Sea in 1989–1990. Copepod abundances were higher in the area north of the Weddell Sea, with the exception of Metridia gerlachei, which was evenly distributed over both areas. Local (intra-station) patchiness was not found, indicating random distribution over small areas. In the assessment of inter-station variability in Bransfield Strait, with standard error of the mean set arbitrarily at 20% of the average abundance and a sampling volume of 150 m3, the theoretical minimum sample size (number of sampling stations) ranged from 6 to 17 for juvenile copepods and from 11 to 25 for adults. The minimum number of stations in the area north of the Weddell Sea reached from 5 to 7, and from 7 to 10 respectively.  相似文献

The relationships between hydrography and spatial distribution of several biochemical indicators of microplankton biomass (chlorophyll, protein and ATP) were studied in an area covering the eastern part of the Bransfield Strait and the northern part of the Weddell Sea, during Antarctic summer (January 1994). Four hydrographic zones were identified: (a) the northern part of the Bransfield Strait, covered by waters of Bellings- hausen Sea origin; (b) a Weddell Sea water mass that affected most of the study area; (c) the Weddell-Scotia Confluence waters, observed north of Elephant Island; and (d) waters influenced by ice melting, found towards the southeastern part of the sampled area. The highest values of biomass indicators (chlorophyll a, ATP and protein) were found in the zones affected by ice-melting processes and in waters from the Bellingshausen Sea. The lowest values of all biochemical parameters were found in the Weddell Sea and in the Weddell-Scotia Confluence waters. A high variability in the hydrographic structure and the distribution of biochemical indicators was observed. The degree of stabilization of the water column, the depth of the upper mixed layer and the grazing pressure of herbivorous zooplankton played a major role in the development, accumulation and spatial variability of microplankton biomass. Marine planktonic diatoms of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia Peragallo have been responsible for amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) events worldwide through the production of the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA). The appearance and toxicity of Pseudo-nitzschia species is variable throughout the year and potentially linked to changes in environmental parameters; many ASP events occur in relatively high latitudes where day length is particularly variable with season. In UK waters, shellfish monitoring has prevented any impact on human health but has led to long-term closures of fisheries, with severe economic consequences. Laboratory experiments on two Pseudo-nitzschia species typically found in Scottish West Coast waters during spring (short photoperiod (SP)) and summer (long photoperiod (LP)) conditions were conducted to determine the influence of photoperiod on their growth and toxicity. Results indicated that non-toxic P. delicatissima (Cleve) Heiden achieved a greater cell density under SP (9-h light:15-h dark (L:D) cycle). For toxin-producing P. seriata (Cleve) H. Peragallo, a LP (18-h L:6-h D cycle) resulted in an enhanced growth rate, cell yield and total toxin production, but it decreased the toxin production per cell. A better understanding of the response of Pseudo-nitzschia species to photoperiod and other foreseeable environmental variables may help predict the appearance of toxic strains.  相似文献

Composition and distribution of asteroid and ophiuroid assemblages were investigated by means of Agassiz trawl catches at 34 stations in 220- to 1,200-m depth in the Weddell Sea and at 17 stations in 90- and 830-m depth off Northeast Greenland. A total of 86 species (48 sea stars, 38 brittle stars) were identified in the Weddell Sea whereas off Northeast Greenland a total of 26 species (16 sea stars, 10 brittle stars) were recorded. In both study areas, brittle stars were numerically more important than sea stars, and abundances generally decreased with water depths. Multivariate analyses revealed a conspicuous depth zonation of sea and brittle stars off Greenland. Very high abundances of Ophiocten sericeum and Ophiura robusta characterized the assemblages on shallow shelf banks whereas in greater depths Ophiopleura borealis, Ophioscolex glacialis and Ophiacantha bidentata became dominant, albeit at significantly lower densities. Mass occurrences of brittle stars, such as those recorded on Greenlandic shelf banks, have not been discovered in the Weddell Sea, where distinct assemblages were discriminated in deep shelf trenches as well as on the eastern and southern shelf. Ophioplocus incipiens, Ophiurolepis martensi and Ophiurolepis brevirima were the most prominent species on the eastern shelf. Ophiacantha antarctica, Ophiurolepis gelida and Ophionotus victoriae on the southern shelf, and Ophiosparte gigas as well as the asteriod Hymenaster sp., in the shelf trenches. Overall, the Weddell Sea housed conspicuously more asterozoan species than the waters off Greenland. Higher species diversity was also evident at both a regional and local scale, especially for the eastern Weddell Sea shelf. However, because many species from the Weddell Sea are closely related, the Weddell Sea assemblages were not significantly different from the Greenland ones in terms of taxonomic diversity and distinctness. The Arctic Ocean and its surrounding shelf seas are warming much faster than the global average, which potentially opens up new distribution areas for temperate‐origin marine phytoplankton. Using over three decades of continuous satellite observations, we show that increased inflow and temperature of Atlantic waters in the Barents Sea resulted in a striking poleward shift in the distribution of blooms of Emiliania huxleyi, a marine calcifying phytoplankton species. This species' blooms are typically associated with temperate waters and have expanded north to 76°N, five degrees further north of its first bloom occurrence in 1989. E. huxleyi's blooms keep pace with the changing climate of the Barents Sea, namely ocean warming and shifts in the position of the Polar Front, resulting in an exceptionally rapid range shift compared to what is generally detected in the marine realm. We propose that as the Eurasian Basin of the Arctic Ocean further atlantifies and ocean temperatures continue to rise, E. huxleyi and other temperate‐origin phytoplankton could well become resident bloom formers in the Arctic Ocean.  相似文献

During January 1989, phytoplankton biomass and species composition were studied in a north / south transect at the Weddell / Scotia Confluence (47°W), between 57° and 61°30′S. Results showed a diatom bloom in the Scotia Sea (chlorophyll a 1.9 μg l−1, particulate organic carbon 239 μg l−1), dominated by Fragilariopsis cylindrus, Dactyliosolen antarcticus and Chaetoceros dichaeta. Low chlorophyll a / phaeopigments ratios (about 1.4) and silicate concentrations (15 μmol l−1) suggested that this was an advanced bloom phase, probably linked to high grazing pressure. Minimum chlorophyll a values of 0.1–0.2 μg l−1 and particulate organic carbon 46 μg l−1 were found at the Weddell / Scotia Front and in a subsurface layer of the Weddell Sea Water. In the southern part of the transect (61°30′S), in the Weddell Sea, a second surface maximum was found (chlorophyll a 0.9 μg l−1, particulate organic carbon 120 μg l−1), but with a different species composition, with Cryptomonas sp. dominant. Our results show a succession within the diatom community in the Weddell / Scotia Confluence Waters when comparing the three EPOS legs. In the Weddell Sea from spring to summer, nanoflagellates, with only a minor contribution from diatoms, persist over a long period with little change in the community structure. We suggest that the frontal system, together with the receding ice edge and the grazing pressure of either krill or protozooplankton, are mainly responsible for the phytoplankton distribution patterns found. The study of materials collected by Russian expeditions and literature data showed that the pelagic ostracod fauna of the Somov Sea, which lies south of the Antarctic Divergence (AD), is an impoverished complex of the fauna of the Australian-New Zealand Antarctic sector. While to the north of the AD the ostracod fauna includes species introduced from waters of the subantarctic and tropical-subtropical structures, ostracods of the Somov Sea are mainly typical Antarctic species. To the north and south of the AD, ostracod abundance and species richness are highest in the depth range of 200–500 m (especially at 300–400 m). Austrinoecia isocheira is the most common species in the Somov Sea and Alacia hettacra in the adjacent northern region. The more southerly Ross Sea has harsher environmental conditions than the Somov Sea and its ostracod fauna is a more impoverished complex of mainly Antarctic species. Alacia belgicae and A. isocheira are the dominant species in the Ross Sea, with their highest abundances at 200–300 m depths. The proportion of A. hettacra in the Ross Sea taxocene decreases southwards. The taxonomical composition and biogeographical structure of ostracod faunas change in the AD region at the northern boundaries of both seas.  相似文献

The morphology and toxicity of the four ubiquitous species belonging to the genus Pseudo-nitzschia found in mixed blooms of phytoplankton from northern Chilean waters were studied. The phytoplankton samples and cultures obtained were identified by scanning electron microscopy, revealing the presence of Pseudo-nitzschia australis, P. calliantha, P. pseudodelicatissima and P. subfraudulenta. This is the first report of P. calliantha in northern Chile. Toxin analyses using the LC–MS method confirmed the presence of domoic acid in P. australis and P. calliantha. Domoic acid was not detected in cultures of P. subfraudulenta. This study therefore confirms P. australis and P. calliantha as an unequivocal source of domoic acid in Chilean waters. P. australis is probably the most important producer of amnesic shellfish toxin in view of its domoic acid content. However, more research is needed to evaluate the potential for toxin production in P. pseudodelicatissima.  相似文献

The finless porpoise, Neophocaena phocaenoides, is endemic to the coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific, ranging from the Persian Gulf to Japan. Nine tetranucleotide microsatellite loci were isolated from the finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides). Polymorphism of each locus was assessed in 39 unrelated individuals from the Yellow Sea and the South China Sea of the Chinese waters. The number of alleles per locus varied from 2 to 11. The ranges of observed and expected heterozygosity were 0.154–0.795 and 0.146–0.839, respectively. Cross-species amplification of these loci was tested in other cetacean species. These microsatellite markers described here will be suitable for population genetic studies of finless porpoises and other cetacean species.  相似文献

The abundances of four dominant Antarctic copepod species, Metridia gerlachei, Rhincalanus gigas, Calanoides acutus and Calanus propinquus, were examined in the Southern Ocean in a combination of a literature review, analysis of museum samples and field sampling. The data were analysed for spatial and temporal variations. The data included in the analysis were from the Weddell Sea area in the summertime at periods 1929–1939 and 1989–1993. The results are discussed in the light of environmental changes and their hypothesised and observed consequences in the Southern Ocean: global temperature change, ozone deficiency and cascading trophic interactions. Combining all these hypothetical effects our null hypothesis was that there were no consistent long-term changes in the abundance of dominant pelagic Copepoda. The null hypothesis was rejected, since several taxons did show statistically significant long-term changes in abundance. The changes were not uniform however. The numbers of adults and juveniles of Calanus propinquus increased significantly between the periods studied. Adult stages of Calanoides acutus were the only taxon decreasing in abundance, in concert with the cascading trophic interactions theory. Latitudinally, only Metridia gerlachei showed a significant increase from north to south. Longitudinally, the abundances of Calanus propinquus juveniles and both adults and juveniles of Rhincalanus gigas increased from west to east. There were no significant variations between day and night samples. Interannual changes were statistically significant in juvenile stages of all the species and in adults of Calanus propinquus. We conclude that no uniform and consistent abundance changes could be observed in the pelagic Copepoda of the Weddell Sea that could be connected to major environmental changes, expected to affect the whole planktonic ecosystem of the Southern Ocean. Significant changes in some of the species studied show that the pelagic ecosystem is not in a steady state, but in addition to interannual changes, there are also major fluctuations extending over decades. The association between the variability of phytoplankton biomass and community structure and the distribution of water masses around the Antarctic Peninsula were examined during austral summer 1993. Phytoplankton biomass showed high variability, and was dominated by an autotrophic flagellate (Cryptomonas sp.) that represented, on average, 91% of total phytoplankton biomass. The lowest phytoplankton biomasses were associated with the strongly mixed, saline, cold waters characteristic of the Weddell Sea water mass, and with the waters influenced by ice melt from the Bellingshausen Sea. The highest biomasses were found in the confluence of these water masses, where a front develops. Community composition also differed among water masses, with eukariotic picoplankton and diatoms having their highest relative contribution to community biomass in stations with Bellingshausen Sea and Weddell Sea water masses, whereas the abundance of Cryptomonas sp. was highest at the confluence of these waters. These results indicate that mesoscale processes, that determine water mass distribution, are of paramount importance in controlling the time and space variability of Antarctic phytoplankton.  相似文献

Summary To compare the spatial and temporal (seasonal) distribution of dinoflagellates, vertical net hauls were taken along similar cruise tracks in the Scotia Sea, Weddell Sea and across the Polar Front Zone in the austral spring and the austral fall. Sixty-three species of armored dinoflagellates were identified and enumerated. Chisquare and hierarchical cluster analyses were performed to define spatial and seasonal patterns in genera and species assemblages. The dominant genera were Protoperidinium, Dinophysis and Ceratium. The Polar Front Zone was an important biogeographical barrier with Blepharocysta, Gonyaulax, Heteroschisma, Oxytoxum and Podolampas occurring mainly north of the Front. Species found primarily in the austral spring were Ceratium fusus, Ceratium lineatum, Dinophysis antarctica, Dinophysis simplex, Gonyaulax digitale, Protoperidinium pyriforme and Protoperidinium variegatum. Austral fall species included Dinophysis tuberculata and Protoperidinium elegantissum. Distribution of armored dinoflagellates in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean is influenced at the generic level by spatial considerations, particular with relation to the Polar Front Zone, whereas species composition can be effected by both region and season.  相似文献

The current work presents new data on the pycnogonids collected during the ANTXXI/2 cruise on board of “Polarstern” R/V during December 2003 and January 2004 in the Eastern Weddell Sea (Antarctica). Twenty-eight samples were taken, with different trawls, from depths between 120 and 1,866 m. In total, 251 specimens of pycnogonids, belonging to 31 species, were collected. Five species were observed to increase their depth range while six were found for the first time in the Weddell Sea, exhibiting an expansion in their geographical distribution, and confirming the general trend toward the circumpolarity of this group (23 of 31 species were circumpolar). Pallenopsis kupei is new for Antarctic waters. The most abundant species were Colossendeis megalonyx and Nymphon australe. Current data were completed with the samples collected from the same region during Polarstern cruise ANTXIII/3 (EASIZ I) in February–March 1996. Bathymetric patterns of distribution were analyzed for the total of 1,564 specimens (82 species, 14 genera). The results showed a difference in the composition between the continental shelf (from 100 to 900 m depth) and the slope (below 900 m), where the genus Nymphon dominated. Depth seems to be an influential factor in the structure of pycnogonid assemblages.  相似文献

The distribution pattern of Pseudo-nitzschia species, associated phytoplankton flora and its relationships with main environmental factors were studied for the first time in continental shelf surface waters of the Argentine Sea (Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, 38–55°S). Both qualitative and quantitative samples, collected during summer and fall 2003, were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. Results indicated that the genus Pseudo-nitzschia has a wide distribution along the studied area. It was present at low densities, with infrequent peak abundances and appeared most frequently as a minor component of the diatom populations that typically develop on the continental shelf of the Argentine Sea. Moreover, phytoplankton communities were numerically dominated by unidentified phytoflagellates (≤5 μm) throughout almost all samples analyzed. Eight Pseudo-nitzschia species were identified in our study: P. australis, P. fraudulenta, P. heimii, P. lineola, P. pungens, P. cf. subcurvata, P. turgidula and P. turgiduloides. Of these, P. heimii, P. lineola and P. turgiduloides are new records for the Argentine Sea. Their presence in the area is attributable to the influence of southerly cold water masses. Spatial and temporal variations of the environmental parameters recorded in the study area generally determined the distribution of Pseudo-nitzschia species. P. pungens and P. australis were widely distributed and reached high densities, especially in waters with elevated temperatures and salinities (around 15 °C, 33.8 psu) and low nutrients concentrations. On the other hand, P. heimii, P. lineola, P. turgidula and P. turgiduloides showed a more restricted distribution, with lower densities in relatively cold, less saline (8 °C, 32.45 psu) and nutrient-rich waters. From the Pseudo-nitzschia species found throughout this survey, P. australis, P. fraudulenta, P. pungens and P. turgidula are known as domoic acid (DA) producers around the world, but there is little information on the potential toxicity of these species in Argentina.  相似文献

Eutrophication has become increasingly serious and noxious algal blooms have been of more frequent occurrence in the Yangtze River Estuary and in the adjacent East China Sea. In 2003 and 2004, four cruises were undertaken in three zones in the estuary and in the adjacent sea to investigate nitrate (NO3–N), ammonium (NH4–N), nitrite (NO2–N), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), dissolved reactive silica (DRSi), dissolved oxygen (DO), phytoplankton chlorophyll a (Chl a) and suspended particulate matter (SPM). The highest concentrations of DIN (NO3–N+NH4–N+NO2–N), SRP and DRSi were 131.6, 1.2 and 155.6 μM, respectively. The maximum Chl a concentration was 19.5 mg m−3 in spring. An analysis of historical and recent data revealed that in the last 40 years, nitrate and SRP concentrations increased from 11 to 97 μM and from 0.4 to 0.95 μM, respectively. From 1963 to 2004, N:P ratios also increased from 30–40 up to 150. In parallel with the N and P enrichment, a significant increase of Chl a was detected, Chl a maximum being 20 mg m−3, nearly four times higher than in the 1980s. In 2004, the mean DO concentration in bottom waters was 4.35 mg l−1, much lower than in the 1980s. In comparison with other estuaries, the Yangtze River Estuary was characterized by high DIN and DRSi concentrations, with low SRP concentrations. Despite the higher nutrient concentrations, Chl a concentrations were lower in the inner estuary (Zones 1 and 2) than in the adjacent sea (Zone 3). Based on nutrient availability, SPM and hydrodynamics, we assumed that in Zones 1 and 2 phytoplankton growth was suppressed by high turbidity, large tidal amplitude and short residence time. Furthermore, in Zone 3 water stratification was also an important factor that resulted in a greater phytoplankton biomass and lower DO concentrations. Due to hydrodynamics and turbidity, the open sea was unexpectedly more sensitive to nutrient enrichment and related eutrophication processes.  相似文献

During the austral summer of 1995, distributions of phytoplankton biomass (as chlorophyll a), primary production, and nutrient concentrations along two north-south transects in the marginal ice zone of the northwestern Weddell Sea were examined as part of the 8th Korean Antarctic Research Program. An extensive phytoplankton bloom, ranging from 1.6 to 11.2 mg m−3 in surface chlorophyll a concentration, was encountered along the eastern transect and extended ca. 180 km north of the ice edge. The spatial extent of the bloom was closely related to the density field induced by the input of meltwater from the retreating sea ice. However, the extent (ca. 200 km) of the phytoplankton bloom along the western transect exceeded the meltwater-influenced zone (ca. 18 km). The extensive bloom along the western transect was more closely related to local hydrography than to the proximity of the ice edge and the resulting meltwater-induced stability of the upper water column. In addition, the marginal ice zone on the western transect was characterized by a deep, high phytoplankton biomass (up to 8 mg Chl a m−3) extending to 100-m depth, and the decreased nutrient concentration, which was probably caused by passive sinking from the upper euphotic zone and in situ growth. Despite the low bloom intensity relative to the marginal ice zone in both of the transects, mean primary productivity (2.6 g C m−2 day−1) in shelf waters corresponding to the northern side of the western transect was as high as in the marginal ice zone (2.1 g C m−2 day−1), and was 4.8 times greater than that in open waters, suggesting that shelf waters are as highly productive as the marginal ice zone. A comparison between the historical productivity data and our data also shows that the most productive regions in the Southern Ocean are shelf waters and the marginal ice zone, with emerging evidence of frontal regions as another major productive site.
