A study on octopodids from the eastern Weddell Sea, Antarctica   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A comprehensive study of octopodids in the Weddell Sea was conducted during cruise ANT XIII/3 of RV "Polarstern". The study yielded eight species of incirrate octopodids, three of which were undescribed. There appeared to be no differences in octopodid species assemblage in the two sampling areas (Kapp Norvegia and south of Drescher Inlet), supporting the theory that there is a single macrobenthic assemblage on the eastern shelf of the Weddell Sea. Six of the octopodid species belonged to the genus Pareledone, illustrating the extensive radiation of this endemic genus within the Southern Ocean. The fragmented nature of suitable habitats and disturbance caused by glaciation cycles are proposed as mechanisms for this radiation. Comparative data illustrate that both the number of octopodid species present and their abundance are greater at higher latitudes than close to the Antarctic Polar Frontal Zone.  相似文献

The structure and spatial distribution of the macrofauna community of the Bellingshausen Sea in the western sector of Antarctica was studied during the ‘BENTART–06’ oceanographic expedition. This is one of the least explored Antarctic seas. A total of 20 box cores were sampled at 11 stations ranging from 157 to 3,304 m depth, using an USNEL-type box corer (BC) dredge. Representatives of 25 higher taxa of invertebrates were collected. Deeper sampling sites were less rich in taxa (4–7 taxa), whereas the figures were higher at shallower sites (up to 17 taxa). Faunal density on the sea bottom revealed a horizontal spatial gradient from the western sites with extremely low figures (90 indiv./m2) towards the eastern ones with the highest figures (1,360 indiv./m2) close to the Antarctic Peninsula. Several abiotic factors (depth, redox, organic matter, carbonates and particle size of surficial sediments) were measured simultaneously on the sea floor to characterise the substrate preferences of the fauna. Positive correlations were found between the faunal distribution and a combination of depth, redox values, and organic matter content of sediments. This indicates decreasing availability of food in the deeper bottoms of the Bellingshausen Sea with a prevalence of depauperated bottoms dominated almost exclusively by a foraminiferans community.  相似文献

As they represent one of the most diversified taxonomic groups on Antarctic bottoms, amphipods are likely to play a complex role in biogeochemical fluxes that occur within benthic ecosystems. The aim of this paper is to present, using both digestive tract analyses and relative species abundance data, the impact of amphipod feeding on different potential preys of the Weddell Sea. The study is based on data obtained for 29 representative amphipod species collected at 130 stations distributed along the eastern shelf of the Weddell Sea (depth range: 60-2,000 m) during three summer cruises, from 1989 to 1998. Sedimenting plankton particles (10-27%), crustaceans (22-32%) and fish carrion (5-18%) are the main food resources. Other abundant potential preys, such as molluscs or tunicates, do not seem to be consumed. Variations in the proportions of the different preyed food items are observed, mainly related to differences in relative amphipod species composition in samples. Presented results will help in refining ecological models of the prospected area, but also underline the need for accurate and reliable measurements of the feeding rates of Antarctic benthic organisms.  相似文献

Summary The stomach contents of 142 Pleuragramma antarcticum from the southernmost part of the Weddell Sea (Gould Bay: 77°19S) and from the eastern coast (72°–74°S) were analyzed. The fish were collected in February 1983 and stored frozen. Size range of the investigated specimens was from 6.4 cm SL (7.3 cm TL) to 21.9 cm SL (24.1 cm TL). The fish were caught by bottom trawl (Gould Bay) and Agassiz Trawl and pelagic RMT-m net in the upper 300 m layer at the eastern coast, respectively. Thirty-six stomachs were empty or contained sand only. The most important prey in terms of biomass were euphausiids, which occurred in 49 stomachs at a mean number of 2. Their dry weight was estimated to be 15–50 times that of the next important food items, which were copepods, gastropods and gammarids. Krill (Euphausia superba) constituted up to 14% of the euphausiids in the diet of fish caught in the eastern Weddell Sea. The rest was usually made up by Euphausia crystallorophias. This species was taken with preference even when the abundance of E. superba in accompanying plankton catches was 16 times higher. In the Gould Bay, gastropods were frequently eaten despite high numbers of copepods in the plankton, whereas in the eastern Weddell Sea, copepods were abundant both in plankton and in the stomach content. The almost complete absence of the early stages of fish in the diet of Pleuragramma antarcticum in the southern and eastern Weddell Sea is due to a pronounced vertical segregation of fish of different sizes. This distribution pattern is thought to be an adaptive mechanism to avoid intraspecific predation, as 90% of the ichthyoplankton in that area is Pleuragramma antarcticum.  相似文献

The metabolic responses of several species of Antarctic copepods to primary productivity and changes between seasons were investigated. To examine the influence of the spring ice-edge bloom on the metabolism of copepods, oxygen consumption rates were determined on specimens from three zones of widely different ice coverage and chlorophyll biomass: pack ice (pre-bloom), ice edge (bloom) and open water (post-bloom). Summer metabolic rates were compared with published winter rates. Field work was done in the Weddell Sea in the region of 60 °S, 36°W in late November and December 1993. Oxygen consumption rates were determined by placing individuals in syringe respirometers and monitoring the oxygen partial pressure for 10–20 hours. Higher metabolic rates were observed in the primarily herbivorous copepods, Calanoides acutus, Rhincalanus gigas and Calanus propinquus in regions of higher primary production: ice edge and open water. The carnivorous Paraeuchaeta antarctica showed a similar pattern. The omnivorous copepods Metridia gerlachei and Gaetanus tenuispinus showed no changes in metabolism between zones. Data on routine rates of copepods from the winter were available for C. propinquus and P. antarctica. In P. antarctica, rates were higher in the summer. Calanus propinquus showed a higher metabolic rate in the summer than in the winter, but the difference was not significant at the 0.05 level. It was concluded that copepods near the ice zone in the ice zone in the Antarctic rely on the spring ice-edge bloom for growth and completion of their life cycle.  相似文献

The diversity and ecological distribution of cyanobacteria in the northern, deglaciated part of James Ross Island were studied during the Antarctic summer season 2005–2006. Seventy-five cyanobacterial morphotypes were observed in various habitats of this area. The identified cyanobacterial taxa belong to the characteristic and dominant types of coastal Antarctica, and majority of them appeared connected to special habitats and formed distinct populations and ecologically delimited communities. The results are compared and discussed with respect to phenotypically characterised cyanobacterial microflora of maritime Antarctica and to recent molecular analyses of cyanobacterial strains from different Antarctic regions. The existence of a specificity and characteristic composition of Antarctic cyanobacterial communities was demonstrated.  相似文献

Stable isotope (13C/12C and 15N/14N) analyses were performed on 90 species belonging to different benthic communities sampled in the eastern Weddell Sea. The study focused on eight amphipod species whose isotopic composition was compared to their previously described respective gut contents. Amphipod stable isotope ratios correspond fairly accurately to the trophic classification based on gut contents and attest to their wide spectrum of feeding types. Since the fundamental difference between the isotope and the gut content approaches to diet studies is the time scale each method addresses, this coincidence indicates that there would be no significant changes in feeding strategies over time. Three levels of the food web are covered by the eight species and, instead of belonging strictly to one trophic category, amphipods display a continuum of values from the suspension-feeder to scavengers.  相似文献

A new species of sea anemone in the genus Hormathia, is described and illustrated based on forty-two specimens collected during the Polarstern cruises ANT XV/3 and ANT XVII/3 in the Weddell Sea. The main features of the new taxon are the crown of flattened and hooked tubercles at the distal end of the scapus, the regular arrangement of pointed tubercles along the column and the cnidom. The new species shares the pointed tubercles, at least in the upper part of the scapus, with two other species of Hormathia in the southern hemisphere: Hormathia spinosa Hertwig 1882 and H. pectinata Hertwig 1882 Received in revised form: 27 December 2000 Electronic Publication  相似文献

Summary During the third leg of the European Polarstern Study (EPOS leg 3) in the austral summer season 1989, benthic macrofaunal communities were sampled from the Elephant Island area (61° southern latitude) and from Kapp Norvegia (71° southern latitude) to Halley Bay (75°30 southern latitude) using a commercial bottom trawl and an Agassiz trawl. Thirty-six trawl samples from a depth range of about 200–2,000 m were considered, with most of the samples being from the shelf and upper slope. Multivariate analysis techniques (clustering and TWIN-SPAN) discriminated between an eastern and a southern community in which parallel subgroups can be distinguished at increasing distance from the ice shelf.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

In this study isopod species of the Ross Sea were investigated. Literature until May 2008 was checked to provide an overview of all known and described species in the Ross Sea. This species checklist was then enlarged through material of the 19th Italica expedition in 2004. During this expedition for the first time a small mesh net (500 μm) was used. Nine thousand four hundred and eighty one isopod specimens were collected during this expedition. Through this material the number of isopod species in the Ross Sea increased from 42 to 117 species, which belong to 20 families and 49 genera. Fifty-six percentage of the isopods species collected during the Italica expedition are new to science. The zoogeography of the 117 species was investigated. A non-transformed binary presence-absence data matrix was constructed using the Bray–Curtis coefficient. The results were displayed in a cluster analysis and by nonmetric multidimensional scaling (MDS). This paper gives a first insight into the occurrence and distribution of the isopod species of the Ross Sea.  相似文献

In spite of their dominance in meltwater environments in the Polar Regions, little is known about conditions that control community structure and production in microbial mats. Microbial mats were sampled at 13 recently separated ponds on the McMurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica, with the aim to determine microbial mat community response to shifts in deterministic processes. Community structure in ponds of different size classes responded to different environmental variables, with conductivity as a common theme. Biomass and net oxygen exchange did not vary across the pond conditions and may reflect the very slow turnover rates characteristic of Antarctic microbial communities. Microbial mat communities on the MIS appear unresponsive to large intra-annual variability, while the long-term inter-annual physiochemical environment of the overlying appears to be influencing the community dynamics.  相似文献

The depth-related patterns in the benthic megafauna of the NE Weddell Sea shelf at the edge of the Fimbul Ice Shelf were investigated at seven sites using towed camera platform photographs. Megafaunal density decreased with depth from 77,939 ha−1 at 245 m to 8,895 ha−1 at 510 m. While diversity was variable, with H′ ranging between 1.34 and 2.28, there were no depth related patterns. Multivariate analyses revealed two distinct assemblages; a shallow assemblage with dense patches of suspension feeders in undisturbed areas and a deep assemblage where these were not present. Disturbance from icebergs explained many observed patterns in faunal distribution. In shallow waters probable effects of disturbance were observed as changes in successional stages; in deeper waters changes in habitat as a result of past disturbance explained faunal distributions. In deeper areas ice ploughing created a mosaic landscape of fine and coarse sediments. Total megafaunal density was highest in areas of coarse sediment (up to 2.9 higher than in finer sediment areas) but diversity was highest in intermediate areas (H′ = 2.35).  相似文献

This study examined the impact of physical disturbance from long-established road culverts on stream macroinvertebrate communities. Three streams within a 6 km section of highway on the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland, Canada, were sampled. Streams had the entire upstream watershed and at least 100 m downstream of the road with natural boreal forest/barren vegetation and all had, within the sampled reaches, similar physical streambed characteristics. The fauna on stones from riffles was sampled at two upstream and three downstream sites, i.e., from 50 m above to about 100 m below the road in each stream. A total of 33 taxa were identified among the streams, with differences limited to a few rare taxa. The sample site communities did not significantly differ from each other with respect to the taxa present. Total macroinvertebrate abundance by site, for combined data of all streams, indicated the site at the exit of culvert plunge pool (site 3) had significantly elevated abundances. Analysis of individual taxa showed this was primarily due to very high numbers of Simulium spp. The other most notable changes were a decrease in numbers of Hydropsyche spp. and Elmidae below the road. The abundances of the remaining taxa were more variable among all sites. The study indicated that long-standing point source physical disturbance primarily impacted taxa abundance rather than community present/absent data, which will recolonize the disturbed zone by downstream drift. We investigated temporal patterns of recolonisation and disturbance in a benthic hard bottom community in high-arctic Kongsfjorden from 1980 to 2003 through annual photographic surveys. A manipulative sampling design was applied, where half of the study area (treatment areas) was cleared at the beginning of the study. Twenty-three different taxa and groups of benthic epifauna were found in the photographs. The benthic community structures of treatments and controls converged within the first decade, but significant differences prevailed until ≤13 years after the start of the study. We could distinguish between three different time intervals with increased inter-annual changes. While the observed differences during the first two intervals could be attributed to recolonisation and succession, the changes in interval 3 were mostly due to increased external forcing and characterised by low inter-group and high inter-annual differences. During this interval, brown algae (mainly Desmarestia) and the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis emerged in high densities, while sea anemone populations declined. Different recolonisation patterns for individual species were related to life span, rate of maturity, predators and larval settlement. We could not find a climax stage in the succession for the benthic community at Kvadehuken, presumably due to the constant level of disturbances at the site.  相似文献

The quantitative and qualitative distribution of phytoplankton was investigated along five North–South transects in the eastern Weddell Sea during the transition from late autumn to winter. Relationships with the regional hydrography, progressing sea ice coverage, nutrient distribution and zooplankton are discussed and compared with data from other seasons. To the north of the Antarctic Slope Front (ASF) a remnant temperature minimum layer was found above the primary pycnocline throughout summer. Surface waters had not entirely acquired typical winter characteristics. While temperature was already in the winter range, this was not the case for salinity. Highest biomass of phytoplankton, with the exception of the first transect, was found in the region adjoining the ASF to the north. Absolute chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations dropped from 0.35 to 0.19 g l–1 . Nutrient pools exhibited a replenishing tendency. Ammonium concentrations were high (0.75–2 mol l–1), indicating extensive heterotrophic activity. The phytoplankton in the ASF region was dominated by nanoflagellates, particularly Phaeocystis spp.. North of the ASF the abundance of diatoms increased, with Fragilariopsis spp., F. cylindrus and Thalassiosira spp. dominating. Community structure varied both due to hydrographical conditions and the advancing ice edge. The phytoplankton assemblage formed during late autumn were very similar to the ones found in early spring. A POC/PON ratio close to Redfield, decreasing POC concentration and a high phaeophytin/Chl a ratio, as well as a high abundance of mesozooplankton indicated that a strong grazing pressure was exerted on the phytoplankton community. A comparison between primary production (PP) in the water column and the sea ice showed a shift of the major portion of PP into the ice during the period of investigation.  相似文献

A gram-positive, motile, rod-shaped, strictly anaerobic bacterium was isolated from an enrichment initiated with sediment taken from below the cyanobacterial mat of a low-salinity pond on the McMurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica. The organism grew optimally at 12° C, at pH 6.5, and at an NaCl concentration of < 0.5% (w/v). It survived freeze-thawing at low salt concentrations, but not exposure to temperatures over 25° C for more than 20 h or short-term exposure to temperatures > 50° C. Out of a variety of polysaccharides tested as growth substrates, only xylan supported growth. The organism also grew on a variety of mono- and disaccharides including the cyanobacterial cell wall constituent, N-acetyl glucosamine. Fermentation products on a mol product per 100 mol of hexose monomer fermented basis were: acetate, 72; formate, 72; butyrate, 55; hydrogen, 114; and CO2, 100. Not detectable in the culture medium (< 2 mol per 100 mol of monomer) were lactate, propionate, ethanol, n-propanol, n-butanol, and succinate. The G+C content of the DNA from the bacterium was 33 mol%, and a phylogenetic analysis indicated that it grouped closely with members of the RNA-DNA homology group 1 of the genus Clostridium. It differed from other species of this genus with regard to growth temperature optimum, substrate range, and fermentation pattern, and is therefore designated as a new species of Clostridium for which the name Clostridium vincentii is proposed. An array of four sediment traps and one current meter was deployed under a well-developed platelet layer for 15 days in the Drescher Inlet in the Riiser Larsen ice shelf, in February 1998. Traps were deployed at 10 m (just under the platelet layer), 112 m (above the thermocline), 230 m (below thermocline) and 360 m (close to sea floor). There was a substantial flux of particulate organic material out of the platelet layer, although higher amounts were collected in the traps either side of the thermocline. Material collected was predominantly composed of faecal pellets containing diatom species growing within the platelet layer. The size classes of these pellets suggest they derive from protists grazing rather than from larger metazoans. Sediment trap material was analysed for particulate organic carbon/nitrogen/phosphorus (POC/PON/POP) and '13CPOC (carbon isotopic composition of POC). These were compared with organic matter in the overlying platelet layer and the water column. In turn, the biogeochemistry of the platelet layer and water column was investigated and the organic matter characteristics related to inorganic nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, silicate, phosphate), dissolved organic carbon/nitrogen (DOC/DON), pH, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), oxygen and '13CDIC (carbon isotopic composition dissolved inorganic carbon).  相似文献
