Body measurements, hematology, and serum chemistry values were studied in 40 captured male and female Cebus apella monkeys. Some significant dimorphism with male predominance was found. Significant differences were also found for hemoglobin and red cell volume between males and females. Differential white blood cell counts indicated a marked predominance of lymphocytes and high values of gamma globulin in both sexes.  相似文献

Tamoxifen, the widely prescribed drug in the prevention and therapy of breast cancer, may cause side effects which may be influenced by gender. The present study was undertaken to investigate the impact of gender on tamoxifen-induced toxic and biochemical changes following oral administration of tamoxifen at high dose level of 20 mg/kg once daily for a 2-week period in both male and female rats. The results showed marked increases in serum activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in female rats. In contrast, treatment with tamoxifen in male animals significantly decreased the activity of ALT, with a tendency for a decrease in serum AST levels. In female rats, a significant reduction in the serum activity of acid phosphatase (ACP) was noted, compared with a non-significant decrease in males. Non-significant changes in serum levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were seen in both sexes. Tamoxifen lowered serum contents of total lipid and total cholesterol in both male and female rats. Serum levels of triglycerides were reduced in female rats as compared to a non-significant decrease in male animals. The serum albumin concentration was decreased in both male and female rats, while total protein was decreased only in female animals. Tamoxifen markedly increased serum levels of creatinine in female rats, compared with a non-significant rise in males. Total serum contents of calcium were similarly reduced in both males and females. This is the first study which points to gender-related differences in tamoxifen-induced toxic and metabolic changes in rats. The results indicated that females are more susceptible than males to tamoxifen toxicity, probably due to the ability of tamoxifen to antagonize the action of estrogen in females.  相似文献

Thiazide diuretics are used commonly to treat hypertension. Unfortunately, they also are known to elevate serum cholesterol levels. Because serum lipid fraction levels differ between the sexes, possible sex-related differences in thiazide-induced changes in serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels were examined. Four groups of male and female hamsters were treated for a minimum of 3 months with hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) at zero, 1, 2 or 4 mg/kg/day. At zero dose, there was no difference in TG levels between the sexes; however, females had significantly higher TG concentrations than did males at 1, 2 and 4 mg HCTZ (all p less than 0.05). Females demonstrate a significant dose response with HCL-C levels increasing with increasing doses of HCTZ, (r = 0.983; p less than 0.02); in contrast males had a similar increase in HDL-C at all dose levels (all p less than 0.05) thus there was no demonstrable dose response (r = 0.539). Total cholesterol concentrations were significantly higher in the females than in males (p less than 0.05) at all 3 dose levels as well as at zero dose. Further, the females demonstrated a direct dose response in TC levels (r = 0.986; p less than 0.02) while the males showed no such dose response (r = 0.824; p less than 0.01). Based on these findings we conclude that: 1) HCTZ increases TG, TC and HDL-C levels in both male and female hamsters; 2) TC levels are higher in females than in males regardless of HCTZ dose; 3) only females show a dose-dependent increase in HCL-C and TC in response to HCTZ. These sex-related changes in lipid fractions occurring with HCTZ treatment, if they occur in humans, may contribute to sex-related differences in rates and severity of atherosclerosis in HCTZ-treated populations.  相似文献

A number of age-related changes in physiological functions have been identified in macaques and humans. However, few studies have examined physiological aging in chimpanzees, despite the increasing age of the chimpanzee population. We documented age-related changes in seven hematology and 17 clinical chemistry parameters in 49 adult chimpanzees (17 males, 32 females) as a comparative viewpoint with human and macaque aging. Longitudinal data were analyzed using weighted linear and quadratic mixed effects regression models. Male chimpanzees exhibited a significant age-related increase in anemia risk, based on significant decreases in hemoglobin (F(1,49)=12.45, P=0.0009) and hematocrit (F(1,49)=15.42, P=0.0003). Both sexes exhibited significant age-related decreases in both kidney and liver function. Decreases in kidney function were noted by significant increases in blood urea nitrogen (F(1,45)=3.92, P=0.036) and creatinine (F(1,50)=5.63, P=0.022) as well as changes in electrolyte (i.e., sodium, potassium, phosphorous, chloride) balance. Declining liver function was based on significant increases in globulin (F(1,46)=32.34, P<0.0001) and decreases in albumin (F(1,48)=23.42, P<0.0001). These changes were most evident beginning at 25-30 years of age in males and 30-35 years of age in females. We recommend amending chimpanzee age classes to categorize males over 25 years and females over 30 years as aged.  相似文献

Background

The cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) has been increasingly used in biomedical research, making knowledge of its blood-based parameters essential to support the selection of healthy subjects and its use in preclinical research. As age and sex affect these blood-based parameters, it is important to establish baseline indices for these parameters on an age and sex basis and determine the effects of age and sex on these indices.

Methods

A total of 917 cynomolgus monkeys (374 males and 543 females) were selected and segregated by age (five groups) and sex. A total of 30 hematological and 22 biochemical parameters were measured, and the effects of age and sex were analyzed.

Results

Baseline indices for hematological and biochemical parameters were separately established by age and sex. Significant effects by age, sex, and age-sex interaction were observed in a number of blood parameters. In the 49–60 months and 61–72 months age groups, red blood cell count, hemoglobulin, and hematocrit showed significantly lower values (P<0.01) in females than males. Serum alkaline phosphatase varied with age in both sexes (P<0.01) and was significantly higher in females than males (P<0.05) in the groups aged 13–24 months and 25–36 months; however, in the three groups aged over 25–36 months, serum alkaline phosphatase was significantly lower in females than males (P<0.01). Creatinine concentration increased with age (P<0.01) in all age groups; specifically in the groups aged 49–60 months and 61–72 months, creatinine was significantly higher (P<0.01) in males than females. Total protein and globulin both increased with age (P<0.01).

Conclusion

The baseline values of hematological and biochemical parameters reported herein establish reference indices of blood-based parameters in the cynomolgus monkey by age and sex, thereby aiding researchers in selecting healthy subjects and evaluating preclinical studies using this species.  相似文献

Studies have been made on the erythrocyte counts per mm3 of blood, total differential leucocyte counts per mm3 of blood, concentration of haemoglobin per 100 ml of blood, haematocrit values and nucleocytoplasmic ratio in a common Indian grass snake, Natrix stolata, in relation to body weight of both the sexes in the same month of the year (during breeding phase). Logarithmic transformations have been used in case of erythrocyte counts and haemoglobin concentrations. From log/log calculation it seems that the correlation between body weight and erythrocyte is more prounounced in females than in males. The concentration of haemoglobin shows a very high degree of correlation in both the sexes. The haematocrit values show a clear trend of increase with increasing body weight in both the sexes. The nucleocytoplasmic ratio does not show much variation in different weight groups whereas in females the variation is well marked in different weight groups and the size of erythrocyte also becomes larger in higher weight groups. In both the sexes the leucocyte counts have been found that along with the increase in body weights, the number of leucocyte increases in juveniles but in adults the leucocyte number decreases with the increasing body weights.  相似文献

This study investigated fluctuations in hematological values of 50 wild-caught vervet monkeys (African green monkeys, grivets, Chlorocebus aethiops) during habituation to captivity. The monkeys were categorized into four groups according to age and sex viz adult males, adult females, juvenile males, and juvenile females. The erythrocyte values were significantly higher (P<0.05) in the adult males than in the other animals. There was an increase in most of the erythrocyte parameters studied during the monitoring period with the most significant being hemoglobin, hematocrit, and mean corpuscular volume. However, the red cell distribution widths, which were higher in adult females, declined. The total white blood cell (WBC) counts, which were higher in adult females than in the other animals, were closely correlated with granulocytes counts. The WBC levels decreased in all the animals throughout the 8 months study, indicating gradually decreasing stress, but they were relatively stable in males. The platelet counts declined significantly (P<0.05) and at 8 months post capture the counts were higher in females than in males. The juvenile female platelet counts were relatively stable during the monitoring period. The maintenance of the monkeys on an improved stable diet and in environment-controlled housing combined with progressing psycho-physiological adaptation may be important factors for the gradual improvements of the hematological values recorded. There were wide variations in these between individual animals emphasizing the need for long adaptation combined with establishment of individual baseline values before experimental studies.  相似文献

Oestrone, oestradiol and an uncharacterized polar fraction of oestrogenic substances were monitored by radioimmunoassay in Day-0 domesticated chickens (Gallus domesticus) after routine 21.5-day artificial incubation. Paired adrenals and gonads, blood serum and in-ovo excrement (allantoic urates plus cloacal expressions) were collected from 9 female and 10 male chicks. All samples were homogenized, hydrolysed and extracted with ether. Component oestrogens were isolated by celite:ethylene glycol column co-chromatography before assay. All egg excretory oestrogen measurements were higher (P less than 0.001) in females than in males. Oestradiol was the major excretory oestrogen in both sexes; oestradiol:oestrone ratios (mean +/- s.e.m.) in females and males were 18.45 +/- 2.42 and 3.03 +/- 0.37, respectively. Females had higher (P less than 0.01) total oestrogens for gonadal and adrenal homogenates and for blood serum samples than did the males; oestradiol was generally the major component.  相似文献

We examined hematological parameters for a semifree-ranging population of mandrills to investigate the influence of age and sex, and to establish normative values for age-sex classes. We also investigated the influence of the reproductive cycle on hematological parameters in females and the influence of seasonality on both sexes. We examined hemoglobin concentration, platelet count, white cell count, red cell count, hematocrit, mean cell volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and differential white cell counts, with a total of 459 observations. Red cell counts, hemoglobin, and hematocrit are significantly lower in females than in males, while female white cell counts are significantly higher. Platelet and white cell counts both decreased with age, while MCV and MCHC (males only) increased with age. Absolute lymphocyte counts also decreased with age. Female reproductive status had little effect on hematology, but melengestrol acetate contraceptive implants resulted in significant increases in hemoglobin, white cell count, red cell count, and hematocrit. Finally, lymphocyte counts increased significantly during the wet season in comparison with dry months, which may be related to increased parasite infection during the wet season. We compare our findings to those for other species, and discuss age-sex patterns in light of mandrill life history. Our results demonstrate the importance of including age-sex class, female reproductive status, and season in studies of hematology and will be useful in further studies of the colony.  相似文献

Nineteen hematological and serum biochemical values were analyzed for 91 healthy cats of both sexes (aged 1 to 48 months) that were bred and reared in our laboratory. Age-related changes were found for many parameters. Red blood cell counts (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Ht), Mean corpuscular constants, GPT, total protein (TP) and albumin (ALB) initially were low but increased then stabilized. White blood cell counts (WBC), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), inorganic phosphorus (Pi), total bilirubin (TBil), total cholesterol (TC), glucose (GLU), and triglyceride (TG) initially were high, but decreased then stabilized. No age-related changes were found for GOT, blood urea nitrogen, or calcium. Of the parameters that changed with age, the mean corpuscular constants, GPT, GLU, and TG became stabilized during the first 3 to 4 months of life, but others (RBC, Hb, Ht, TP, ALB) became stabilized after 9 to 11 months, during which period body weight reached a plateau. Some parameters (WBC, ALP, TG, Pi) showed change up to 18 months of age. These results suggest that cats 9 to 11 months old can be regarded as adults; but for some parameters, cats aged 18 months, or older, are better regarded as adults. Sex-related differences in the values for mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and WBC that were found after 11 months of age were higher in females. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of prolonged melatonin administration on chosen metabolic and hormonal variables in male and female Sprague-Dawley rats. Melatonin was administered in tap water (4 microg/ml) daily from the 6th month of age. Rats were fed a standard type of diet ad libitum and were kept in a light regimen L:D--12:12h. The experiment was terminated after 12 weeks of melatonin administration. Melatonin decreased body mass during the whole experiment in females and from the 42nd day of the experiment in males. Relative heart muscle weight in females and absolute/relative thymus weight in males were increased after melatonin administration. Melatonin decreased glycaemia, heart muscle glycogen concentration in females and liver glycogen concentration in both sexes. Serum insulin concentration in males was decreased; serum corticosterone concentration was increased in both males and females. Serum triacylglycerol and heart muscle cholesterol concentration in females were decreased, however in males serum and heart muscle cholesterol concentration was increased. Liver phospholipid concentration in females was decreased and heart muscle phospholipid concentration in males was increased. Melatonin increased malondialdehyde concentration in heart muscle in males and in liver in both sexes. Melatonin induced prominent sex-dependent changes in both carbohydrate and lipid metabolism.  相似文献

High-dose testosterone enanthate (TE) may prevent hypogonadism-induced osteopenia. For this study, 3-mo-old male and female Fisher SAS rats underwent sham surgery, gonadectomy (GX), or GX plus 28 days TE administration (7.0 mg/wk). GX reduced serum sex hormones (i.e., testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, and estradiol) (P < 0.05) in both sexes and bone concentrations of testosterone (males only), and estradiol (females only). GX also elevated urine deoxypyridinoline/creatinine in both sexes and serum osteocalcin (females only), findings that are consistent with high-turnover osteopenia. GX reduced cancellous bone volume (CBV) and increased osteoid surfaces in tibia of both sexes. GX males also experienced reduced trabecular number and width and increased trabecular separation, whereas GX females experienced increased osteoblast and osteoid surfaces. Bone biomechanical characteristics remained unaffected by GX, except that femoral stiffness was reduced in females. In contrast, TE administration to GX rats elevated serum and bone androgens to supraphysiological concentrations in both sexes but altered neither serum nor bone estradiol in males. Additionally, TE did not prevent GX-induced reductions in serum or bone estradiol in females. TE also reduced markers of high-turnover osteopenia in both sexes. In males, TE prevented GX-induced changes in trabecular number and separation, CBV, and osteoid surfaces while diminishing osteoblast and osteoclast surfaces; however, these changes were not fully prevented in females. In both sexes, TE increased femoral length and femoral maximal strength to above that of Sham and GX animals while preventing the loss of femoral stiffness in females. In conclusion, TE administration appears protective of cancellous bone in male rats and augments cortical bone strength in both sexes.  相似文献

肥胖及血脂异常研究很少涉及低收入地区。本研究分析了新疆低收入地区维吾尔族农民体质指数(BMI)、超重及肥胖与多种血脂分子异常的关系,探讨贫困地区筛查高危人群的适宜策略。在新疆喀什农村对3 286名年龄≥18岁个体(男1 585人,女1 701人) 进行问卷检查、体格检查及多项血脂分子的检测。数据采用Pearson相关性、ROC、Logistic回归等统计学分析。结果显示,在男女性中,随着BMI的增加,甘油三酯(TG)、总胆固醇(TC)、低密度脂蛋白胆固醇(LDLC)的血浓度呈现递增趋势(P<0.01);男/女性TG、LDLC、TC血浓度均与BMI有显著相关性(P<0.01)。单项或多项血脂异常率均随BMI增加而上升;同一个体2个血脂指标同时异常的高危组合分别是TG+HDLC(高密度脂蛋白胆固醇)和TC+TG。Logistic联合多变量ROC曲线分析表明, 单项指标HDLC(AUC=089)在血脂异常诊断中的权重最高;而组合指标TG+HDLC(AUC=095)的权重高于其它任何组合。单因素Logistic回归分析发现,超重和肥胖是代谢综合征相关血脂指标TG、TC和HDLC异常的危险因素(P<0.05)。上述结果表明,在南疆农村贫困维吾尔族人群中,男女性超重与肥胖者均与血脂指标异常升高相关;HDLC、TG和 TC 任意两个指标同时异常,为血脂异常的高危状态。肥胖伴有“TG+HDLC”异常升高可能是血脂异常相关疾病的“集合危险因素”,在贫困地区具有临床筛查参考价值。  相似文献

Several thyroid function parameters were compared between reproductively inhibited prairie deer mice of both sexes taken from laboratory populations and corresponding reproductively capable controls. The results of these experiments indicated the following: 1) prairie deer mice females had a statistically significant daily variation in mean serum thyroxine concentration and males displayed a similar trend; 2) total serum thyroxine and triiodothyronine were significantly lower in both male and female reproductively inhibited population animals compared with reproductively capable controls; 3) several morphometric characteristics of the thyroid of male and female population prairie deer mice were significantly different from that of control males and females, suggesting functional hypothyroidism in both sexes; 4) thyroid histology of male population deer mice was different from that of female population animals. In males, the data suggested that thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) stimulation was deficient due to some undetermined secondary hypothyroidism. In females, reduced serum thyroxine and triiodothyronine concentrations were observed due to primary hypothyroidism of unknown origin. The interrelationship between thyroid and adrenal function is discussed here and it is concluded that each of the systems may contribute to the observed reproductive inhibition. In particular, it was noted that the mechanism of response between population males and females may be quite different. No conclusive data are available to suggest whether one or the other system is the primary controller of the reproductive inhibition.  相似文献

为研究不同性别桑树在镉(Cd)与酸雨(AR)复合处理条件下的生长与镉积累差异,本试验以‘强桑1号’(雌株)和‘农桑14号’(雄株)两种不同性别桑树为材料,研究重金属镉(100 mg·kg-1干土)和模拟酸雨(pH 3.0)处理下,两者生物量积累和分配、最大净光合速率(Amax)和叶绿素荧光参数,以及Cd积累与分配的差异.试验共设置无Cd和AR(对照)、单独Cd、单独AR、Cd+AR复合4个处理.结果表明:单独Cd处理虽然显著增加了雌株和雄株根茎叶中Cd含量,而且雌株各部分Cd含量显著高于雄株,但是只有雄株根、茎和总生物量、最大净光合速率显著下降,而雌株除了Amax显著下降外,各部分生物量积累下降均不显著,且两者的最大光化学效率(F_v/F_m)、光化学淬灭系数(q_P)和非光化学淬灭系数(q_N)均未发生显著变化.复合处理下,雄株和雌株的总生物量、Amax均显著降低,与单独镉处理相比,雌株根和叶中的Cd含量显著升高,但雄株没有明显变化,两者的F_v/F_m、q_P没有显著变化,但q_N均显著降低.短时间处理下桑树雌株对单独镉胁迫的耐受性高于雄株,但是酸雨的加入会降低雌株对镉的耐受性,可能是因为酸雨促进雌株根系对镉的吸收,并导致叶片积累了更多的镉.  相似文献

To follow‐up on our previous report that acarbose (ACA), a drug that blocks postprandial glucose spikes, increases mouse lifespan, we studied ACA at three doses: 400, 1,000 (the original dose), and 2,500 ppm, using genetically heterogeneous mice at three sites. Each dose led to a significant change (by log‐rank test) in both sexes, with larger effects in males, consistent with the original report. There were no significant differences among the three doses. The two higher doses produced 16% or 17% increases in median longevity of males, but only 4% or 5% increases in females. Age at the 90th percentile was increased significantly (8%–11%) in males at each dose, but was significantly increased (3%) in females only at 1,000 ppm. The sex effect on longevity is not explained simply by weight or fat mass, which were reduced by ACA more in females than in males. ACA at 1,000 ppm reduced lung tumors in males, diminished liver degeneration in both sexes and glomerulosclerosis in females, reduced blood glucose responses to refeeding in males, and improved rotarod performance in aging females, but not males. Three other interventions were also tested: ursolic acid, 2‐(2‐hydroxyphenyl) benzothiazole (HBX), and INT‐767; none of these affected lifespan at the doses tested. The acarbose results confirm and extend our original report, prompt further attention to the effects of transient periods of high blood glucose on aging and the diseases of aging, including cancer, and should motivate studies of acarbose and other glucose‐control drugs in humans.  相似文献

T cells contribute to hypertension in male experimental models; data in females is lacking even though women are more likely to develop immune disorders. The goal of this study was to determine whether immune cells contribute to hypertension in female spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and define the T cell profile in whole blood and kidneys of male and female SHR. We hypothesized that inflammatory cells contribute to hypertension in female SHR; however, male SHR have a higher blood pressure so we hypothesize they will have a heightened inflammatory profile. The lymphocyte inhibitor mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) was administered in a dose-dependent manner to SHR. At the highest dose (50 mg·kg(-1)·day(-1)), blood pressure was significantly decreased in both sexes, yet the percent decrease in blood pressure was greater in females (female: 12 ± 1%; males: 7 ± 1%, P = 0.01). Circulating and renal T cell profiles were defined using analytical flow cytometry. Female SHR had more circulating CD3(+), CD4(+), and pro-inflammatory CD3(+)CD4(+)RORγ(+) Th17 cells, whereas males had more immune-suppressive CD3(+)CD4(+)Foxp3(+) T regulatory cells. In the kidney, females had greater numbers of CD8(+) and T regulatory cells than males, whereas males had greater CD4(+) and Th17 cell infiltration. MMF decreased circulating and renal T cells in both sexes (P < 0.0001), although the effect of MMF on T cell subtypes was sex specific with females having greater sensitivity to MMF-induced decreases in lymphocytes. In conclusion, there is a lymphocyte contribution to the maintenance of hypertension in the female SHR and sex of the animal impacts the T cell profile.  相似文献

Hematologic and serum chemistry values were determined for 20 adult captive European wildcats (Felis silvestris) in Lleida (Catalonia, Spain). Seven wildcats (4 females and 3 males) were captured in the wild and 13 (4 females and 9 males) were born and raised in captivity. Samples were collected between September and December from 1993 to 1998. Blood was obtained by jugular venipuncture after administration of either ketamine and xylazine or ketamine and medetomidine. Females had significantly higher mean eosinophil counts, albumin concentration, (and A/G ratio) and lower mature neutrophil counts, although these differences were not clinically relevant. Results for many of the blood parameters fall within the reference range for domestic cats. Mean values for alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, creatine phosphokinase, and lactate dehydrogenase activities as well as blood urea nitrogen, glucose, and sodium concentrations were higher than the upper limit of the reference range for domestic cats.  相似文献
