We conducted laboratory and field experiments to elucidate the life history of Ixodiphagus hookeri, a parasitoid of the ixodid tick Amblyomma variegatum in Western Kenya. Ixodiphagus hookeri females oviposited in unfed host nymphs as well as engorged nymphs, but rarely in engorged larvae. While I. hookeri developed to adults in engorged nymphs, the eggs laid in unfed nymphs disappeared within 2 days after oviposition. As temperature increased, development time of I. hookeri from oviposition to adult emergence in engorged nymphs decreased from 46 days at 23 °C to 35 days at 28 °C, and their immature survival in engorged nymphs decreased from 67% at 23 °C to 22% at 28 °C. No parasitoid adult emerged from hosts at 30 °C. Individual hosts parasitized by single females produced 42–53 adult wasps, 73% of which were females. As a typical pro-ovigenic species, I. hookeri females had an average of 84 mature eggs at emergence and lived only for a few days. When laboratory-reared, unfed nymphs of A. variegatum were attached to cattle for 4–9 days in subsistence farmers’ fields in Western Kenya, 25% of the engorged nymphs and 4% of the unfed nymphs on cattle were parasitized by I. hookeri, demonstrating that I. hookeri females search for and oviposit in A. variegatum nymphs on cattle. Unlike other strains of I. hookeri that overwinter as eggs in unfed nymphs, I. hookeri could continuously reproduce throughout the year in Western Kenya.  相似文献

Summary Adult females of the pine beauty moth, Panolis flammea, fed on a saturated honey solution, laid significantly more eggs than those individuals given water only or not fed at all.At 20°, the longevity of both male and female moths was significantly increased when they were supplied with a food source. At 10° fed male months were not significantly longer lived than unfed moths. Fed female moths at 10° were however, significantly longer lived than unfed individuals. At 20°, fed male moths lived longer than fed females (8.17 days as compared with 5.95 days). At 10°, fed female moths lived longer than fed males (16.00 days compared with 11.41 days).At 20°, weight loss in unfed females over the reproductive period was proportional to the number of eggs laid and the survival time of the individual. In fed females, no significant weight loss occurred over the reproductive period, irrespective of the number of eggs laid or the longevity of the individual.Egg production, even in fed females, over the life span of an individual was only a fifth of the total eggs present in the reproductive tract at eclosion.It is concluded that adult females of P. flammea are likely to require an extra external food source to achieve their full reproductive potential.  相似文献

The survival of unfed males and females of six species of African ticks was monitored at five different saturation deficits at constant temperature (25°C). The survivorship curves for each species comprised a pre-mortality period, prior to when ticks started to die and a mortality period corresponding to a rapid increase in the mortality rate. Longevity was defined as pre-mortality plus mortality. A negative correlation between the longevity of the ticks and the saturation deficits was found with ticks surviving longer at lower deficits. The survival of males and females was similar. At low saturation deficits (2–4 mmHg) Amblyomma hebraeum survived the longest periods (74 weeks). Some correlation was found between the tick survival under dehydrating conditions and habitat associations. Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Haemaphysalis leachii, the most mesic in distribution, had the shortest longevity (21 and 13 weeks, respectively) at high saturation deficits (7–21 mmHg). Hyalomma marginatum rufipes, the most xerophilic in distribution, had the longest survival (39.3±10.5 weeks) at high saturation deficits. Other factors apart from the adult survival should be taken into account when accounting for the tick distribution, in particular the tolerance of earlier developmental stages to desiccation.  相似文献

The water content, the survival time at various relative humidities(r.h.) and the critical equilibrium activity of unfed adultDermacentor marginatus and D.reticulatus ticks were investigated at a constant temperature of20 °C. It was also examined whether these ticks use liquidwaterto compensate water loss. Both Dermacentor spp. showed nosignificant differences in water content in relation to body mass. The meanwater content of D. marginatus and D.reticulatus was 54.6% and 54.7%, respectively, in females and 56.3%and 57.0%, respectively, in males. The survival time of unfed adults prolongedwith decreasing saturation deficits. On average, males survived longer thanfemales and D. marginatus ticks survived mostly longerthanD. reticulatus ticks. The 50% mortality period rangedbetween 40 d at 33% r.h. and 420 d at 95% r.h. in D.marginatus, and between 43 d at 33 r.h. and 366 d at 95% r.h. inD. reticulatus. The critical equilibrium activity of unfedadults was estimated to be 0.84 for both species and was independent of sex.When dehydrated adult D. marginatus and D.reticulatus ticks were offered liquid water, only a few slightlygained weight while most further lost weight. Liquid water was not attractivefor dehydrated or non-dehydrated ticks and drinking was not observed. Aftersubmerging in water for 2 d, most of the dehydrated ticks had gained weight.  相似文献

The free-living stages of the tick Haemaphysalis (Kaiseriana) longicornis were studied at Mt Tamborine (526 m altitude) and Amberley (25 m altitude) in southeast Queensland between 1971 and 1980. Data are presented on the number of eggs and larvae produced, the moulting success of engorged larvae and nymphs and the survival and behaviour of unfed larvae, nymphs and adult females. Temperature, moisture, daylength, grass length and age of unfed ticks were investigated as sources of variation in development rates, fecundity or survival. At Mt Tamborine the life cycle was well synchronized with the seasons to produce one generation per year. At Amberley higher temperatures accelerated development rates and would have delayed diapause, so disrupting the life cycle.  相似文献

The longevity of two populations of the planktonic copepod Acartia clausi in the Saronicos Gulf was estimated. One group lived in a heavily polluted area, the other group in a relatively clean area. Three annual generations were studied. A comparison was also made between fed and unfed animals. A temperature of 14°C appeared to be the most favourable for the survival of Acartia; however, the optimum survival temperature depended also upon the generation to which the Acartia belonged. The acclimatization temperature has a strong influence on survival. Acartia in its natural environment thrives best and has maximum longevity at colder temperatures. The pollution-adapted Acartia population survived longer under laboratory-controlled conditions than the population living in a non-polluted area.  相似文献

An enhancement programme based on stocking 0+ year age‐class Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, conducted in the River Bush, Northern Ireland, U.K. over the period 1996–2005, was reviewed with reference to the performance and biological characteristics of wild fish. Wild ova to 0+ year fry (summer) survival was c. 8% with subsequent wild 0+ year fry‐to‐smolt survival c. 9%. Stocked unfed 0+ year juveniles gave c. 1% survival to smolt whilst fed 0+ year S. salar stocked in late summer exhibited survival at c. 5%. Stocking with unfed and fed fry contributed to increased smolt production and helped attain local management objectives between 2001 and 2005. Significant differences in biological characteristics were observed between wild and stocked‐origin fish. Wild‐smolt cohorts were dominated by 2+ year age‐class fish on the River Bush whilst smolts originating from fed fry mostly comprised younger 1+ year individuals. The mean mass of 1+ year smolts derived from stocked fed fry was significantly lower than that of wild 1+ year smolts, although these differences were not evident between older age classes. Differences in run timing between wild smolts and smolts derived from stocked fry were also apparent with the stocked‐origin fish tending to run earlier than wild fish. Although the stocking exercise was useful in terms of maximizing freshwater production, concerns over the quality of stocked‐origin recruits and the long term consequences for productivity are highlighted.  相似文献

A collection of EST clones from female tick Amblyomma americanum salivary glands was hybridized to RNA from different feeding stages of female tick salivary glands and from unfed or feeding adult male ticks. In the female ticks, the expression patterns changed dramatically upon starting feeding, then changed again towards the end of feeding. On beginning feeding, genes possibly involved in survival on the host increased in expression as did many housekeeping genes. As feeding progressed, some of the survival genes were downregulated, while others were upregulated. When the tick went into the rapid feeding phase, many of the survival genes were downregulated, while a number of transport‐associated genes and genes possibly involved in organ degeneration increased. In the males, the presence of females during feeding made a small difference, but feeding made a larger difference. Males showed clear differences from females in expression, as well. Protein synthesis genes were expressed more in all male groups than in the partially fed females, while the putative secreted genes involved in avoiding host defenses were expressed less. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The role of host size, movement, feeding status, color, and species in the visual host evaluation and recognition behavior of the tick parasitoid, Ixodiphagus hookeri Howard was investigated. Freshly emerged female parasitoids were subjected to a choice bioassay, where the test materials were placed in sealed vials and the vials placed in a Petri dish. When presented with A. variegatum live and mummified nymphs, females examined: larger nymphs significantly longer than smaller nymphs, fed nymphs significantly longer than unfed nymphs, dead and live nymphs for similar lengths of time, and grey live nymphs and yellow-brown and dark brown mummified nymphs for similar lengths of time. The total number of visits to vials containing these test materials were also not significantly different, except there were significantly more visits to yellow-brown mummies when compared to the number of visits to dark brown mummies. When presented with A. variegatum (host) and R. appendiculatus (nonhost) nymphs, the females examined A. variegatum nymphs significantly longer than R. appendiculatus nymphs. The total number of visits to vials containing A. variegatum nymphs were significantly more than the visits to the vials containing R. appendicualtus nymphs. Furthermore, females spent significantly more total examination time per visit on larger and fed A. variegatum nymphs when compared to smaller and unfed nymphs, respectively. Direct and indirect detection were significant when females were presented with fed versus unfed A. variegatum nymphs, grey nymphs versus yellow-brown mummies, and R. appendiculatus versus A. variegatum nymphs. Direct and indirect detection for the rest of the bioassays were not significantly different. Finally, The percentages of females contacting large fed A. variegatum nymphs first were significantly different from those of females contacting small unfed R. appendiculatus nymphs first. The firstcontact percentages for the rest of the bioassays were not significantly different.  相似文献

Quantitative data are given on the survival and rate of development of Amblyomma hebraeum Koch in relation to temperature and humidity, in laboratory and field conditions. By comparison with other ixodid species the developmental periods of A. hebraeum are extremely long. Development is most rapid at 30 C, and the duration of the developmental periods increases exponentially with decreasing temperature. Oviposition occurs successfully at 15 and 30 C, egg incubation at 20 to 30 C, and larval and nymphal molting at 15 to 35 C. The ability of the developing stages to survive in dry conditions increases with increasing size, i.e. from egg to engorged larva. Mortality in the developing stages increases at low humidities as temperature decreases, due to the longer periods over which water is lost. The conversion efficiency of ovipositing females is influenced by both temperature and atmospheric humidity. Longevity of unfed larvae is correlated directly with saturation deficit. Longevity of unfed nymphs and adults is dependent on both temperature and saturation deficit.  相似文献

Ticks secrete an array of lesion-maintenance factors into the host via the salivary glands while feeding, some of which elicit an immune response by the host that adversely affects the ability of the tick to feed and reproduce. Our approach to characterizing these factors has been to make expression libraries from mRNA of salivary glands (from unfed and 3-day-feedingAmblyomma americanum females) which will serve as sources of the genes (clones) that code for them. Thus far, we have detected 10 positive clones in primary screens using polyspecific antiserum from rabbits hyperimmunized to 3-day-feeding tick salivary glands. We also report making a cDNA library from whole unfed females, and a genomic library from whole unfed ticks, which will serve as additional sources of genetic information for characterizing salivary-gland secretory products. Immunoblots of salivary glands fromA. americanum females feeding for various intervals (unfed, and 12, 48, 72, and 96 h) revealed the presence of several prominent polypeptides (90 & 45 kDa) when probed with the same rabbit antiserum that was used to screen the expression library.Ixodes dammini had several immunogens in common withA. americanum at 96 h (90, 45, 43 and 23 kDa). We plan to use monospecific antiserum raised to antigens detected in our immunoblots (e.g. 90 kDa) to further screen the expression libraries, in addition to using the polyspecific antiserum already in hand. We discuss the future use of the salivary-gland genes for characterizing secretory products which facilitate attachment to the host (cement) and maintain the lesion during the lengthy feeding interval.  相似文献

In most animals it is the sex that invests the most in reproduction, generally the female, that expresses mate choice. However, in numerous species, males or both males and females are choosy. We investigated mate choice in males of the egg parasitoid Trichogramma turkestanica Meyer (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). We tested the impact of age and feeding status of males on their capacity to choose between virgin or mated and kin or non-kin females. As expected, males showed no preference between kin and non-kin mates, but inseminated virgin females over mated ones. No effect of age on the level of choosiness was found, but unfed males were choosier than fed ones. This is the first study to show an effect of feeding status of males on mate choice in insect parasitoids.  相似文献

Laboratory colonies of Rhytidoponera ants were allowed to prey on the fed and unfed stages of the Australian ticks Aponomma hydrosauri and Amblyomma limbatum. The unfed tick stages had a higher survival than the fed stages. The ants took longer to handle the adult ticks than the nymphs and longer to handle the nymphs than the larvae. The ants also took longer to handle the unfed than fed nymphs, but longer to handle the fed than unfed females. As well as the differences between the tick stages, there was a species effect, with the ants taking longer to handle A. limbatum, and with that tick species having a higher survival than A. hydrosauri after ant predation. Anaphes iole Girault(Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) is a native, solitaryegg parasitoid of Lygus spp.(Heteroptera: Miridae) in North America. Current research is considering factors thatmay optimize the in-vivo rearing of A.iole using Lygus hesperus Knight(Heteroptera: Miridae) as host. The effects ofhost density, day of oviposition and foodpresence, parasitoid age and mate presence onproduction of A. iole progeny weredetermined in this study. After exposingindividual parasitoids to host patches for 24h, the percentage of hosts containing a latestage A. iole pupa wassignificantly greater at a moderate hostdensity (41–70 eggs per patch) than at a lowdensity (10–40 eggs). But, no differenceswere detected between moderate and high density(71–100 eggs) or between high and low densitytreatments. More adult progeny were generatedby females (of variable age; 0–2 d old) onthe first day of oviposition rather than thesecond day, regardless of food presence. Progeny sex ratio was decidedly male-biased onthe second day. Female age (0 d vs 1 d old)had a marginal effect on production in 24 h; 0d old females tended to generate more adultprogeny than 1 d old females. Overall, thisresearch suggests that exposing newly-emerged,unfed, mated A. iole females to amoderate to high host density for 1 to 2 dcould lead to time-efficient production ofadult progeny in an in-vivo rearing system.  相似文献

In vitro proliferation and cytokine production were investigated in BALB/c mice splenic cell cultures that were stimulated with concanavalin A (ConA) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and simultaneously exposed to salivary gland extracts (SGE) of unfed and partially fed adult ixodid ticks (Ixodes ricinus, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, Amblyomma variegatum). Generally, tick SGE enhanced proliferation of unstimulated splenocytes and SGE of unfed ticks suppressed mitogen induced proliferation. Partially fed R. appendiculatus and A. variegatum suppressed ConA responses, while partially fed I. ricinus stimulated both ConA and LPS induced proliferation. A. variegatum and R. appendiculatus females slightly enhanced LPS responses 2 days after attachment but suppressed them at the end of the slow feeding phase. In 72 h ConA induced cell cultures, interferon gamma (IFN-γ) production was suppressed by SGE of all ticks, interleukin (IL)-10 production was enhanced by unfed I. ricinus and partially fed A. variegatum males and IL-5 production was enhanced by feeding R. appendiculatus females and A. variegatum males. The study revealed variability in the responsiveness of murine splenocytes to SGE of different ixodid tick species, whereby patterns of host immunomodulation within one tick species differed between sexes and changed during feeding.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to extend 40 yr of prior demographic work on northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) at Año Nuevo, California, by including the oldest animals. We used a Bayesian mark‐recapture analysis to estimate lifelong survival and lifespan of a cohort of 372 weaned pups branded in 1985–1987 and resighted until 2008. Annual survival probability of females averaged 86.3%/yr at ages 5–16, then declined until age 21, the age of the oldest female. Male survival was lower, averaging 67.7%/yr from age 1 to age 15, the age of the oldest male. Northern elephant seal females in the expanding population at Año Nuevo live longer than southern elephant seal females (M. leonina) at colonies whose populations are declining. This comparison suggests that high survival of females is a key factor in population growth.  相似文献

Abstract. The reproductive status of native (wild) screwworm fly, Chrysomya bezziana, caught on swormlure-baited sticky traps in Papua New Guinea is described. A total of 1122 females and 25 males were trapped. Of these females 595 were scored for insemination status and stage of ovarian development (on a scale of 2–10) of which 20% were in suitable condition for assignment to first, second and third ovarian cycles. Of the nulliparous females, only 17% were inseminated at stage 3 of ovarian development, 70% at stage 4, 93-97% at stages 5 and 6, and all of stages 7–10 (gravids). All parous females were inseminated. More than half of the captured females were parous (58%) and only 7% of the total were gravid. Proportions of females in ovarian cycles 1, 2 and 3 were 41%, 50% and 9% respectively. Survival of female Ch. bezziana in the laboratory was adequately described by lognormal and Gompertz survival functions, for both of which the mortality rate is an increasing function of reproductive age. Analysis of the reproductive age distribution of native females estimated their mean life-expectancy at 9 days under the prevailing mean field temperature of 26.5oC. This equates to completion of 1.7 ovarian cycles and an estimated mean lifetime fecundity of 146 female progeny. The survival models, which also allowed responsiveness of females to swormlure-baited traps (female trappability) to vary according to their stage of ovarian development, indicated significant age-dependent trapping bias. These findings are compared with similar data for the New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax.  相似文献

In individually monitored red deer (Cervus elaphus) living in the North Block of the Isle of Rhum, Scotland, juvenile survival is related to the genotype at the enzyme loci Mpi and Idh-2 (each with two alleles, f and s). To establish whether other fitness components also are related to genetic differences, we examined whether age at first breeding, fecundity, and adult survival of females were related to genotype at the same loci. Fertility in females shot outside the study area was also analyzed in relation to Mpi and Idh-2 genotype. The analyses controlled for phenotypic and environmental factors affecting female reproductive performance. At Mpi, f-carrying females in the study area bred earlier than ss individuals and tended to be more fecund. However, no association was found between Mpi genotype and adult survival. In culled females, Mpi f-carriers were more likely to be pregnant than ss females. At Idh-2, homozygous females in the study area started breeding earlier than heterozygous females. Idh-2 fs and ss females were more fecund than ff females though this relationship was complicated by an interaction with spring temperature in the year of birth. When the population was at high density, adult survival of Idh-2 ss females was better than survival of ff females, which was, in turn, better than survival of fs females. No association was found between Idh-2 genotype and fertility in culled females. Overall, the associations found in female reproductive measures favor those genotypes that survive particularly badly over the first two years of life. This result supports the idea that countervailing selection in different fitness components (antagonistic pleiotropy) is a common and powerful force maintaining polymorphism in natural populations. It may also explain how fitness components can have large heritabilities while overall fitness may have a low heritability.  相似文献

The fine structure of the fat body and associated nephrocytes of the American dog tick,Dermacentor variabilis (Say), was described in unfed larvae, unfed nymphs, and in unfed and fed adults of both sexes. The fat body consisted of one type of cell, the trophocyte. Morphological changes that occured in the trophocytes of both sexes were dependent on feeding. The ultrastructure of feeding male trophocytes was distinct from trophocytes of feeding females. In the feeding female, the trophocyte developed an ultrastructure characteristic of cells that produce secretory proteins. A type of scalariform cell junction was found associated with rough endoplasmic reticulum of the trophocytes. Nephrocytes were closely associated with trophocytes but were not part of the fat body. Nephrocyte ultrastructure was unaltered throughout the life-stages we examined, except at the end of oviposition. Organelles in the nephrocytes were not randomly distributed, but were found in distinct regions of the cytoplasm. Slit diaphragms at the surface of the nephrocytes were extracellular specializations that had a periodic ultrastructure.  相似文献
