The role of bud competence in the determination of flowering seasonality was studied in three Citrus cultivars, Bearss lime (Citrus latifolia Tan.), Fino lemon (C. limon [L.] Burm. f.) and Owari satsuma (C. unshiu (Mak.) Marc.), which differ in their adaptation to hot climates and their propensity to produce off-season blooms. Potted plants were kept in a greenhouse under non-inductive conditions (minimum temperature higher than 20°C), and periodically the flowering response was determined of a group of trees exposed for 30 days to an inductive temperature regime (15/8°C). A seasonal change in bud competence was demonstrated, and both bud sprouting and flower formation were highest when the low temperature regime was imposed during February and March. During the summer months, the low temperature regime resulted in a small increase in bud sprouting as compared to non-chilled trees, but only vegetative buds developed and no flowers were formed. The influence of environmental factors on the determination of bud competence was further studied. No effect of photoperiod was found, but raising the minimum air temperature above 25°C during 60 days, eliminated bud competence in Owari satsuma. In Bearss lime trees, the buds reacquired the competence after 4 months at 25/20°C, a temperature regime that does not induce flower formation. The reacquisition of competence was much faster at a lower temperature (15/8°C). A consistent relationship between the flowering response and DNA methylation in buds could not be demonstrated in all cultivars.

We examined the responses of two tree fern species (Dicksonia antarctica and Cyathea australis) growing under moderate and high light regimes to short-term water deficit followed by rewatering. Under adequate water supply, morphological and photosynthetic characteristics differed between species. D. antarctica, although putatively the more shade and less drought adapted species, had greater chlorophyll a/b ratio, and greater water use efficiency and less negative δ13C. Both species were susceptible to water deficit regardless of the light regime showing significant decreases in photosynthetic parameters (A max, V cmax, J max) and stomatal conductance (g s ) in conjunction with decreased relative frond water content (RWC) and predawn frond water potential (Ψpredawn). During the water deficit period, decreases in g s in both species started one day later, and were at lower soil water content, under moderate light compared with high light. D. antarctica under moderate light was more vulnerable to drought than all other plants as was indicated by greater decreases in Ψpredawn, lowest stomatal conductance, and photosynthetic rates. Both tree fern species were able to recover after a short but severe water stress.

In Leymus chinensis, mild water stress (soil moisture 60–65 % of field capacity) had no significant effects on nitrogen metabolism, photosynthesis, and chlorophyll fluorescence. Severe water stress (35–40 %) significantly decreased the activities of nitrate reductase, glutamine synthetase, and glutamate dehydrogenase, net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, maximal efficiency of photosystem 2 photochemistry (Fv/Fm), actual quantum yield, and photochemical quenching, but increased the endopeptidase activity and malondialdehyde contents. The adverse effects on photosynthesis and N metabolism were markedly greater in reproductive shoots than in vegetative shoots.

Potted two-year-old lemon plants (Citrus limon (L.) Burm. fil.) cv. Fino, growing under field conditions were subjected to drought by withholding irrigation for 13 d. After that, plants were re-irrigated and the recovery was studied for 5 d. Control plants were daily irrigated maintaining the soil matric potential at about -30 kPa. Young leaves of control plants presented higher leaf conductance (g1) and lower midday leaf water potential (Ψmd) than mature ones. Young leaves also showed higher leaf water potential at the turgor loss point (Ψtlp) than mature leaves. In both leaf types g1 decreased with increased vapour pressure deficit of the atmosphere. From day 1 of the withholding water, predawn and midday leaf water potentials (Ψpd and Ψmd) decreased, reaching in both cases minimum values of -5.5 MPa, with no significant differences between mature and young leaves. Water stress induced stomatal closure, leaf rolling and partial defoliation. No osmotic adjustment was found in response to water stress in either leaf type, but both were able to enhance the cell wall elasticity (elastic adjustment). After rewatering, leaf water potential recovered quickly (within 2 d) but g1 did not. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Field bean plants were subjected to flooding stress for 7 days, during two stages of development: at the vegetative phase (4-week-old seedlings) and at the generative phase (8-week-old plants). The height of plants, total area of leaves, the number of undamaged leaves, dry plant matter, chlorophyll content, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) activity, the maximum quantum yield of PS2 photochemistry (Fv/Fm ratio), the photosynthesis rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s) were determined. A strong reduction in stem elongation and leaf area as well as in dry matter production was observed as a result of flooding. The responses from vegetative plants were greater than in generative plants. Waterlogging decreased chlorophyll a and b in leaves, notably at the vegetative stage, and persisted after cessation of flooding. After flooding, photosynthesis was strongly reduced and positively correlated with decreased stomatal conductance. Damage to the photosynthetic apparatus resulted in a lower Fv/Fm especially in young seedlings. In vegetative plants Fv/Fm quickly returned to the control levels after the soil was drained. The results show that an excess of water in the soil limits growth and injures the photosynthetic apparatus in field beans, but that the extent of the injury is strongly age dependent.

We examined the potential differences in tolerance to hypoxia by two species of apple rootstocks. Stomatal behavior and photosynthesis were compared between Malus sieversii and Malus hupehensis. Plants were hydroponically grown for 15 days in normoxic or hypoxic nutrient solutions. Those of M. sieversii showed much greater sensitivity, with exposure to hypoxia resulting in higher leaf concentrations of abscisic acid (ABA) that prompted stomatal closure. Compared with the control plants of that species, stomatal density was greater in both new and mature leaves under stress conditions. In contrast, stomatal density was significantly decreased in leaves from M. hupehensis, while stomatal length was unaffected. Under stress, the net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and chlorophyll contents were markedly reduced in M. sieversii. The relatively hypoxia‐tolerant genotype M. hupehensis, however, showed only minor changes in net photosynthesis or chlorophyll content, and only a slight decrease in stomatal conductance due to such treatment. Therefore, we conclude that the more tolerant M. hupehensis utilizes a better protective mechanism for retaining higher photosynthetic capacity than does the hypoxia‐sensitive M. sieversii. Moreover, this contrast in tolerance and adaptation to stress is linked to differences in their stomatal behavior, photosynthetic capacity and possibly their patterns of native distribution.

To clarify mortality patterns of current-year shoots within the crown of Betula maximowicziana Regel after severe insect herbivory in central Hokkaido, northern Japan, we investigated the degree of defoliation, pattern of shoot development, shoot mortality, and leaf tissue-water relations. One hundred current-year long shoots growing in a B. maximowicziana plantation were observed for defoliation and mortality in June 2002. An outbreak of herbivorous insects (Caligula japonica and Lymantria dispar praeterea) occurred in the stand in mid-to-late June, and the monitored shoots were defoliated to various degrees. Within 1 month of defoliation, some of the severely defoliated shoots had produced new leaves on short shoots that had emerged from axillary buds. Stepwise logistic regression revealed that the probability that current-year long shoots would put out axillary short shoots with leaves is closely related to the degree of defoliation. To evaluate the water relations of the leaves, we determined pressure–volume curves for the leaves that survived the herbivorous insect outbreak and the new leaves that emerged after defoliation. The water potential at turgor loss (Ψl,tlp) and the osmotic potential at full turgidity (Ψπ,sat) were higher for the new leaves than for the surviving leaves, indicating a lower ability to maintain leaf cell turgor against leaf dehydration in the new leaves. Of the 100 shoots, 13 died after the emergence of new leaves. Stepwise logistic regression revealed that the probability that the long shoots would die generally increased with the emergence of new leaves, with increasing shoot height. This result suggests that the combined effect of the vulnerability of newly emerged leaves and low water availability, associated with higher shoot positions within the crown, caused shoot mortality. Based on our results, some possible mechanisms for mortality in severely defoliated B. maximowicziana are discussed.

Abstract Environmental constraints on gas exchange, stomatal conductance and water relations were investigated in the Soft Tree Fern, Dicksonia antarctica, at sites across its natural distribution and in the glasshouse. Dicksonia antarctica exhibited strong stomatal response down to a vapour pressure deficit (VPD) of 0.25 kPa, an unusual characteristic when compared with other ground fern species. Net photosynthetic rate may be a response of the microenvironment prevalent during frond development, reflecting acclimatory capacity. Both these ecophysiological characteristics are consistent with the ecological niche of D. antarctica, a long‐lived, fire‐resistant species that, during its lifetime, may be exposed to: (i) a humid environment beneath a rainforest canopy; and (ii) an exposed environment following wildfire. Maximum net photosynthesis and quantum yield of photosynthesis correlated strongly with VPD and the maximum net photosynthetic rate of 10.8 µmol m?2 s?1 was the highest yet recorded for a fern. These observations are consistent with the relatively low growth typically observed in D. antarctica on sunny, exposed sites and vice versa on cool, humid sites exposed to sunflecks. Favourable water relations maintained under conditions of moderate VPD (2.03 kPa) were probably due to stomatal control. However, inadequate rainfall or high VPD (4.98 kPa) caused water stress, recovery of which was limited by slow water transport through fronds. These observations are consistent with the limitation of D. antarctica distribution to sites sheltered from hot winds and with reliable water supply. The funnel‐shaped rosette of fronds of D. antarctica may harvest rainfall and make it accessible to aerial roots situated at the base of fronds. This process may maintain favourable water relations independently of a subterranean root system. This proposed strategy of water acquisition is unique for a fern species and may eliminate a need for soil moisture competition with surrounding plant species. It is suggested that the ecophysiological characteristics observed in D. antarctica in this study may contribute to the ecological niche it occupies, which is characterized by a variable environment.

Photosynthetic gas exchange, vegetative growth, water relations and fluorescence parameters as well as leaf anatomical characteristics were investigated on young plants of two Olea europaea L. cultivars (Chemlali and Zalmati), submitted to contrasting water availability regimes. Two-year-old olive trees, grown in pots in greenhouse, were not watered for 2 months. Relative growth rate (RGR), leaf water potential (ΨLW) and the leaf relative water content (LWC) of the two cultivars decreased with increasing water stress. Zalmati showed higher values of RGR and LWC and lower decreased values of ΨLW than Chemlali, in response to water deficit, particularly during severe drought stress. Water stress also caused a marked decline on photosynthetic capacity and chlorophyll fluorescence. The net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, the maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII (F v/F m) and the intrinsic efficiency of open PSII reaction centres (F′ v/F′ m) decreased as drought stress developed. In addition, drought conditions, reduced leaf chlorophyll and carotenoids contents especially at severe water stress. However, Zalmati plants were the less affected when compared with Chemlali. In both cultivars, stomatal control was the major factor affecting photosynthesis under moderate drought stress. At severe drought-stress levels, the non-stomatal component of photosynthesis is inhibited and inactivation of the photosystem II occurs. Leaf anatomical parameters show that drought stress resulted in an increase of the upper epidermis and palisade mesophyll thickness as well as an increase of the stomata and trichomes density. These changes were more characteristic in cv. ‘Zalmati’. Zalmati leaves also revealed lower specific leaf area and had higher density of foliar tissue. From the behaviour of Zalmati plants, with a smaller reduction in relative growth rate, net assimilation rate and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, and with a thicker palisade parenchyma, and a higher stomatal and trichome density, we consider this cultivar more drought-tolerant than cv. Chemlali and therefore, very promising for cultivation in arid areas.

Many species of the genus Cenchrus, with different ploidy are important components of world grasslands. In the present investigation, influence of ploidy on leaf water potential (Ψleaf) and photosynthetic characteristics under water-stress condition was studied in 2-month-old plants of eight Cenchrus species representing three ploidy and two life spans. Stress was imposed for 2, 4, 6, and 8 days by withholding watering. Decrease in water potential, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance for CO2 (g s), and carboxylation efficiency (P N/C i) occurred in all species. Nevertheless, perennial and diploid C. setigerus maintained the highest P N/C i at maximum stress indicating its higher assimilation potential. Photosynthetic water use efficiency (P N/E) in general decreased with increase of water stress; however, at low stress, reverse trend was observed in diploid C. prieurri, C. setigerus, and tetraploid C. glaucus. Results indicate that relative reduction in photosynthetic characteristics was more in annual diploid than perennial diploid and tetraploid. Stress tolerance in terms of plant height, rolling and wilting of leaves also indicated better adaptability of tetra and hexaploid species over diploid. Moreover, recovery of different physiological traits was more pronounced in perennial tetraploid and hexaploid over annual diploid, thus making them suited more to drought conditions. Analysis of variance results showed direct correlation (r = 0.675) of ploidy with gas exchange parameters indicating better impact of this on physiological performance of different species of Cenchrus under water stress. This is the first report where influence of ploidy levels on photosynthetic characteristics and overall responses to moisture stress is studied in a tropical grass species.

Forty-day-old seedlings of Atriplex halimus were treated either with NaCl (50, 300 and 550 mM) for the subsequent 30 days or with 15% PEG for the subsequent 10 days. As much as 50 mM of NaCl significantly increased shoot fresh and dry weight and height; nevertheless, 300 or 550 mM NaCl seemed to have no effect. On the other hand, these growth parameters were not affected by drought after 3 or 6 days, but were reduced after 10 days. The gas exchange parameters (photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate) were increased by 50 mM NaCl, but decreased by 300 and 550 mM. These parameters were decreased in response to drought only after 10 days of withholding water. In contrast to Na+, K+ was significantly decreased by NaCl but not by drought. The time course effect revealed that phosphoenol pyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) protein was doubled in response to NaCl after 1 and 5 h and continued thereafter, higher than control, while drought had no significant effect. Rubisco seemed unchanged by NaCl or drought. It could be concluded that the decrease in fresh weight might be attributed to the decrease in water content. Moreover, the decrease in photosynthesis could result from a decrease in stomatal conductance, a protective mechanism against water loss to improve water use efficiency. These findings indicate that Atriplex halimus tolerates NaCl and drought through decreasing growth, reducing gas exchange parameters to improve water use efficiency, uptake Na+ and saving, if any, the photosynthetic enzyme particularly PEPC.

Insect herbivory has variable effects on plant physiology; so greater understanding is needed about how injury alters photosynthesis on individual injured and uninjured leaves. Gas exchange and light-adapted leaf chlorophyll fluorescence measurements were collected from uninjured and mechanical partial leaf defoliation in two experiments with Nerium oleander (Apocynaceae) leaves, and one experiment with Danaus plexippus herbivory on Asclepias curassavica (Asclepiadaceae) leaves. Gas exchange impairment (lower photosynthetic rate (P n ), stomatal conductance (g s)) indicates water stress in a leaf, suggests stomatal limitations causing injury P n impairment. The same pattern of gas exchange impairment also occurred on uninjured leaves opposite from injured leaves in both N. oleander experiments. This is an interesting result because photosynthetic impairment is rarely reported on injured leaves near injured leaves. No photosynthetic changes occurred in uninjured A. curassavica leaves opposite from D. plexippus-fed leaves. Partially defoliated leaves that had P n and g s reductions lacked any significant changes in intercellular leaf [CO2], C i. These results neither support, nor are sufficient to reject, stomatal limitations to photosynthesis. Manually imposed midrib vein severance in N. oleander experiment #1 significantly increased leaf C i, indicating mesophyll limitations to photosynthesis. Maximal light-adapted leaf photochemical efficiency () and also non-photochemical quenching (q N) were reduced by mechanical or insect herbivory to both study species, suggesting leaf trouble handling excess light energy not used for photochemistry. Midrib injury on N. oleander leaves and D. plexippus herbivory on A. curassavica leaves also reduced effective quantum yield (ΦPSII) and photochemical quenching (q P); so reduced plastoquinone pools could lead to additional PSII reaction center closure.

Soil salinization and alkalinization frequently co-occur in naturally saline and alkaline soils. To understand the characteristics of mixed salt-alkali stress and adaptive response of Medicago ruthenica seedlings to salt-alkali stress, water content of shoots, growth and photosynthetic characteristics of seedlings under 30 salt-alkaline combinations (salinity 24–120 mM and pH 7.03–10.32) with mixed salts (NaCl, Na2SO4, NaHCO3, and Na2CO3) were examined. The indices were significantly affected by both salinity and pH. The interactive effects between salt and alkali stresses were significant, except for photosynthetic pigments. Water content of shoots, relative growth rates of shoots and roots and pigment concentrations showed decreasing trends with increasing salinity and alkalinity. The root activity under high alkalinity and salinity treatments gradually decreased, but was stimulated by the combined effects of low alkalinity and salinity. The survival rate decreased with increased salinity, except at pH 7.03–7.26 when all plants survived. Net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and intercellular CO2 concentration decreased with increased salinity and pH. M. ruthenica tolerated the stress of high salt concentration when alkali concentration was low, and the synergistic effects of high alkali and high salt concentrations lead to the death of some or all seedlings. M. ruthenica appeared to be saltalkali tolerant. Reducing the salt concentration or pH based on the salt components in the soil may be helpful to abate damage from mixed salt-alkaline stress.

The effects of simulated herbivory (early or late defoliation and cutting of the flowering shoot) on the growth and reproduction of three species of monocarpic composite forbs (Crepis pulchra, Picris hieracioides and C. foetida) with different inflorescence architectures were studied in experimental plots. For the three species studied, early defoliation had no significant effect on subsequent growth. In contrast, late defoliation, occurring at the start of the season of drought, had a negative effect on growth and reproduction in the two Crepis species, particularly C. foetida, but had less effect on P. hieracioides. Sexual biomass was more clearly affected by late defoliation than was vegetative biomass, although the effects differed markedly among species possibly as a result of differences in phenology. Clipping the flowering shoot removed about 3 times less biomass than late defoliation and had little effect on vegetative biomass. It had much greater effects on the sexual biomass in P. hieracioides and C. pulchra, and resulted in the production of many shoots sprouting from the rosette, allowing the treated plants to regain a vegetative biomass close to that of control plants. Clipping did however lead to the production of shorter shoots and a reduction in the number of capitula formed. In C. foetida, much branching occurred even when the main shoot was not cut; the architecture of individual plants was therefore only slightly changed by clipping the apical bud and the sexual biomass of this species was not affected by ablation of the flowering shoot. Overcompensation was found in only two families of C. pulchra for vegetative biomass. No over-compensation was found for sexual biomass, despite an increase in the number of flowering shoots in C. pulchra and P. hieracioides following clipping. However situations close to compensation for the vegetative biomass in the three species and in P. hieracioides for the sexual biomass were recorded. The response of the three study species to simulated herbivory were related to their architecture and to the time of defoliation.

Anthracnose Citrus disease has been associated with several symptoms worldwide and it is recently compromising Citrus production in the Mediterranean area. Four species complexes are mainly involved: Colletotrichum boninense, C. acutatum, C. gloeosporioides and C. truncatum. In this study, we investigated the genetic diversity of Colletotrichum spp. in Tunisia associated with wither‐tip of twigs on Citrus. Specific primers ITS4‐CgInt allowed the identification of Cgloeosporioides species complex in all the 54 isolates, sampled from three regions and four Citrus species. Overall, our genotypic analysis using 10 SSR markers showed a moderate diversity level in Tunisian C. gloeosporioides population and highlighted that C. gloeosporioides reproduce mainly clonally. In addition, heterothallic isolates were present in our population, suggesting that the pathogen population may undergo parasexual recombinations. The highest genetic diversity in C. gloeosporioides was recorded in Nabeul and on orange, which likely constitutes the area and the host of origin for the Citrus anthracnose disease in Tunisia. In addition, no population subdivision was detected at the geographic, host species or cultivars’ origin levels. However, our study identified two genetic subpopulations and indicated a rapid C. gloeosporioides population change at temporal scale that should be further examined over several consecutive growing seasons in order to understand its population dynamics.

The impact of different defoliation intensities on the ability of Lotus tenuis plants to regrowth, mobilise nutrients and to associate with native AM fungi and Rhizobium in a saline‐sodic soil was investigated. After 70 days, plants were subjected to 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% defoliation and shoot regrowth was assessed at the end of subsequent 35 days. Compared to non‐defoliated plants, low or moderate defoliation up to 75% did not affect shoot regrowth. However, 100% treatment affected shoot regrowth and the clipped plants were not able to compensate the growth attained by non‐defoliated plants. Root growth was more affected by defoliation than shoot growth. P and N concentrations in shoots and roots increased with increasing defoliation while Na+ concentration in shoots of non‐defoliated and moderately defoliated plants was similar. Non‐defoliated and moderately defoliated plants prevented increases of Na+ concentration in shoots through both reducing Na+ uptake and Na+ transport to shoots by accumulating Na+ in roots. At high defoliation, the salinity tolerance mechanism is altered and Na+ concentration in shoots was higher than in roots. Reduction in the photosynthetic capacity induced by defoliation neither changed the root length colonised by AM fungi nor arbuscular colonisation but decreased the vesicular colonisation. Spore density did not change, but hyphal density and Rhizobium nodules increased with defoliation. The strategy of the AM symbiont consists in investing most of the C resources to preferentially retain arbuscular colonisation as well as inoculum density in the soil.

We measured diurnal changes in photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance and water use efficiency in three species of herbaceous climbing plants (Luffa cylindrica, Trichosanthes kirilowii and Dioscorea opposita) exposed to two intensities of UV-B radiation: 3.0 μw cm?2 (R1) and 8.0 μw cm?2 UV-B (R2) radiation under ambient growth conditions. Responses differed per species and per treatment. In Luffa all values increased compared to the Control in both treatments, except for stomatal conductance in R2. In Trichosanthes photosynthetic rates and water use efficiency increased, while the transpiration rates decreased under both treatments, and stomatal conductance was lower in R1. In Dioscorea photosynthetic rates and water use efficiency decreased under both treatments, while the transpiration rates and stomatal conductance increased. The results suggested that to some extent increased UV-B radiation was beneficial to the growth of L. cylindrica and T. kirilowii, but detrimental to D. opposita.
