The close similarity in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) between Pomarine and (North Atlantic) Great skuas, Stercorarius pomarinus and Stercorarius skua, has several possible explanations. Two of the main alternatives are stochastic lineage sorting of mtDNA and introgressive hybridization between S. pomarinus and S. skua. Here, a new probabilistic approach to testing these alternatives using different phylogenies based on external morphology, mtDNA and ectoparasites leads to rejection of the lineage sorting and corroboration of the hybridization hypothesis. If great skuas are a monophyletic group, as indicated by the present cladistic analysis based on morphology and by other evidence, the available molecular genetic data are as expected if mtDNA has been transferred from S. pomarinus to S. skua by introgressive hybridization. Further evidence from several unlinked regions of nuclear DNA is crucial for critical testing of the alternative hypotheses on skua evolution.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of increased egg production on body condition as well as on measures of reproductive performance in great skuas, Stercorarius skua, over two subsequent years. We experimentally increased egg production from the normal two to six eggs. Six eggs might also be produced under natural circumstances after repeated clutch loss. After the production of the last egg we measured: (i) body mass, (ii) pectoral muscle, and (iii) haematocrit, total red blood cell count and mean corpuscular volume, as indicators of body condition. We took the same measurements of control females who had produced the normal clutch of two eggs. The measurements were repeated one year after the manipulation, and survival, laying dates, clutch sizes and hatching success were recorded for up to three consecutive years. After producing six eggs, females were lighter, had smaller pectoral muscles and lower haematological values than control females. Hatching success of eggs was significantly reduced. Even one year after the experiment there were still differences in body condition. Annual survival was not affected by the manipulations, although there was an indication that survival costs depended on whether chicks were raised after the increased egg production. While pair bonds and egg sizes were not affected in the post‐experimental year, females started breeding significantly later than in the previous year. Two years after the experiment laying dates had advanced again and were not different from those of control females. This pattern of maintaining survival and egg sizes, but delaying breeding in the post‐experimental year was found for two independent groups of females which had both been subjected to increased egg production. These results present evidence that increased egg production can have long‐term effects on female body condition and aspects of reproduction. However, although present, the costs of extra eggs appear to have been relatively small in the great skua in comparison to the two other bird species for which inter‐annual effects have been reported.  相似文献

In many sexually size-dimorphic species of birds and mammals, the larger sex, often the males, show increased environmental sensitivity during ontogeny. This is generally assumed to be due to higher energy requirements, reflected in higher absolute growth rates of the larger sex. Poor early conditions often increase the sex differences in vulnerability. However, it is not clear whether these patterns are equally pervasive in species where females are larger, as males face an additional early disadvantage due to high levels of testosterone. We investigated sex-specific growth patterns of mass, tarsus and wing of the great skua Stercorarius skua , a seabird with reversed size dimorphism. We were particularly interested in sex-specific effects of early conditions on growth. Beside data from unmanipulated nests, we present results from an egg removal experiment, which caused chicks to hatch from smaller eggs and in poorer body condition. Half of the experimental chicks were raised by pairs in which mothers were in poor body condition. At the end of the nesting period, great skua chicks exhibited a comparable degree of size dimorphism as is found in adults, although neither sex had reached final adult size. Despite females reaching larger asymptotic values of mass and tarsus, timing of growth was not different between the sexes. Absolute growth was higher for females around the time of maximum growth, which suggests that daughters face higher energetic demands. We found sex-specific effects of poor early conditions on growth patterns, although not to the extent which we had predicted. Hatching in poor body condition was related to slowed growth in females but not males. However, our experimental manipulations had no additional negative effect on growth. Our results indicate that daughters in the great skua face higher demands during growth than sons, and that early conditions are more important for the development of the larger sex in this reversed dimorphic species.  相似文献

Interspecific parental care is rare, conveys no ultimate evolutionary advantage, and is usually attributed to reproductive errors in species with analogous habitat, behaviour and diet. We report on interspecific parental care (brooding and “defence” of unrelated chick) provided by a king penguin to a sub-Antarctic skua chick on Marion Island, despite substantial risk of injury to the penguin due to the presence of the true parents.  相似文献

The arctic skua (Stercorarius parasiticus) is one of the most long‐lived bird species. In 2010, we captured in Finland an adult, female arctic skua which had been ringed as a nestling in 1987. We tagged it also with a color ring. The bird has last been seen in July 2020 at the age of 33 years, making it most likely the oldest known arctic skua of the world. In 2010–2011 the bird carried a light‐level measuring geolocator, the data of which revealed that the bird had spent the nonbreeding season in the Canary Current area on the west coast of Africa. Breeding populations of arctic skuas have declined recently especially in British Isles, thus it is useful to get longevity data of this species with a high breeding site fidelity.  相似文献

Data on reproductive success of 110 Falkland Skua Catharacta skua antarctica pairs were gathered during the austral summers of 1988–1989 and 1990–1991 on New Island, Falkland Islands. Adults laid two eggs 2–3 days apart and began incubation with the first egg. For the years combined, 1.39 chicks per nest hatched and 0.84 chicks per nest fledged (fledging was defined as surviving to 16 days of age). Brood reduction was common; 43% of the two-chick broods were reduced to one, and mortality was concentrated on the younger chick. Although asynchronous hatching and differential death are consistent with Lack's brood reduction hypothesis, application of O'Connor's quantitative criterion revealed that sibling competition may not be responsible for the observed chick mortality. Furthermore, because no aggressive interactions between chicks were observed or detected indirectly, siblicide may be absent in this population. Instead, predation modified by a variety of factors may have led to the greater mortality of the second-hatched chick.  相似文献

 Three skua specimens with a colouration pattern of the Chilean skua were observed at Potter Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica. Two of these were breeding birds. However, they showed a pattern of mitochondrial DNA typical for South Polar skua. These birds thus represent hybrids originating from male Chilean skua. The third bird could not be caught. Seven avian remains from Mid-Holocene strata of the southeastern coast of Potter Peninsula (King George Island: Isla 25 de Mayo, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) are reported. They were described and assigned to the brown skua Stercorarius antarcticus lonnbergi (Aves, Laridae), a living species currently breeding in the area. The presence of penguins in the same sequence is in agreement with the current dynamics of the coastal ecosystems of Antarctica. Nowadays, penguins and skuas frequent these same environments.  相似文献

In 881 nesting attempts by Great skuas on Foula during 1975 and 1976, 1.24 chicks were fledged per pair. Addled eggs and egg predation were the main causes of losses. Eggs rolled out of the nest were not retrieved. Almost all chicks which hatched also fledged. Young or inexperienced breeders were almost as successful as older or experienced pairs. Birds producing single egg clutches and addled eggs usually also showed low aggression and held small territories. Egg predation was greatest at high nest density, when food availability was low, and when adult aggression score was low. High density nesting seems to have been imposed by the limited size of the island and prolonged population increase.  相似文献

Methods are described for the maximum likelihood estimation of mating preferences in models of assortative mating for monogamous and polygamous organisms. These methods are applied to data of matings of the three phenotypes, pale, intermediated and dark of the Arctic Skua. The data were obtained by exhaustive surveys of the Arctic Skua populations on the islands of Fair Isle and Foula. The data give evidence of significant assortative mating of pale birds on Foula and intermediate birds on Fair Isle. The combined data show that there is very highly significant assortative mating, but only of intermediates. In previous surveys, data, in which intermediates and darks were not distinguished, were obtained from a number of islands in the Shetlands. These data, combined with the present data, show that the overall assortative mating of pale is very highly significant with no evidience of heterogeneity. The assortative mating of intermediate birds on Fair Isle agrees with other evidence showing that inermediate males have an advantage as a result of sexual selection.  相似文献

Hybridisation between South polar skua (C. maccormicki) and Brown skua (C. antarctica lonnbergi) in the area of the Antarctic Peninsula is known at least since the beginning of the last century but no survey has been done so far. This paper reviews information on the species composition of skua colonies of more than 10 pairs in the Antarctic Peninsula region, and the incidence of mixed pairs. Morphometrics, population size and breeding success were examined in detail at King George Island. The northward distribution of South polar skuas extended to King George Island (62°11′ S 59°00′ W), with a small outlying population on Signy Island (60°45′ S 45°36′ W), whereas Brown skuas did not breed further south than Anvers Island archipelago (64°46′ S 64°03′ W). The proportion of mixed pairs was highest at the northern end of the ∼500-km-wide hybrid zone. Body size distribution of sympatric skuas from King George Island is clearly bimodal but overlaps considerably and hybrids cannot be identified. Skua population sizes at Potter Peninsula/King George Island remained stable between 1994 and 2004. Numbers of mixed breeding pairs fluctuated more strongly than those of pure species pairs. Breeding success of Brown skuas varied the least.  相似文献

Sixteen brown skuas (Catharacta antarctica lonnbergi) and seven South Polar skuas (C. maccormicki) were found dead near Boekella Lake, Hope Bay, Antarctica, in February 1997. Postmortem examination revealed conspicuous caseous, deep yellow fungal/mycelial mats or cores in the trachea of nine of 19 carcasses that were examined. These mycelial cores, highly suggestive of aspergillomas, completely occluded the tracheal lumen in four of these nine carcasses. Thelebolus microsporus, a psychrophilic ascomycetous fungus commonly isolated from skua dung and skua nesting material, was isolated in pure culture from these tracheal plugs. Awareness of pseudolesions resulting from Thelebolus microsporus profuse postmortem growth in the trachea of dead skuas will minimize potential confusion with aspergillosis when investigating causes of epornithics in Antarctica.  相似文献

Summary Pellets regurgitated by south polar skuas at Hop Island, in the Rauer Group, East Antarctica, Princess Elizabeth Land were collected and analysed. Individual collections were grouped in relation to the nearest breeding colony of seabirds, but irrespective of their source the frequencies of occurrence of the food items identified in pellets indicated that Adélie penguins were of varying, but major (29%–72%), importance to skuas inhabiting the Island. Though the incidence of Antarctic petrel remains (from adult or chick) was generally low in pellets (<7%), the occurrence of remains of southern fulmars was high (>27%) at all sites near the fulmar breeding colonies. Fish remains, and beaks of cephalopods, were present in few pellets. Whilst indicating the range of foods eaten on Hop Island, and perhaps their relative importance, it is considered that the pellets by themselves do not reflect accurately the level of predation of eggs of Antarctic petrels and southern fulmars, nor do the pellets necessarily include the remains of young of these species.  相似文献

The lice, Haffneria grandis and Saemundssonia were extracted from their hosts, skuas (Aves: Stercorariidae). Lice were extracted from dead birds by combing feathers, while lice from live birds were extracted using a delousing chamber containing chloroform vapour. Lice were measured and the data analysed by canonical discriminant analysis. Lice show variation in morphology that is useful in identifying some of these hosts. This variation is presumably due to micro-environmental pressure provided by each host. Our interpretation is that these chewing lice have evolved to be adapted to each skua taxon; different sizes and morphologies of skua taxa result in different sizes and morphologies of Haffneria grandis and Saemundssonia.  相似文献

Skuas, which are closely related to gulls, frequently use a specialized feeding method (kleptoparasitism) by which they rob other seabirds of their food. This paper tests the idea that skuas have evolved as specialist kleptoparasites.
The fibre type composition of the M. pectoralis, M. supracoracoideus and M. iliofibularis of a great skua Catharacta skua (Brünn.) and a herring gull Larus argentatus (Pontopp.) was determined by three enzyme histochemical methods commonly used for mammalian fibre classification; the reactions for alphaGPDH, NADH-TR and mATPase activity.
In both species slow fibres were present only in the M. iliofibularis, and fast twitch glycolytic fibres were not present in any of the muscles. The M. pectoralis and M. supracoracoideus of both species consisted entirely of the fast twitch oxidative-glycolytic fibres.
The overall metabolic enzyme activities of the muscles were assessed in terms of the proportions of fibres with high, intermediate and low metabolic enzyme activity. The overall levels of oxidative and glycolytic enzyme activity were significantly higher in the M. pectoralis than in the M. supracoracoideus and significantly higher in both of these than in the M. iliofibularis. This was true of both species.
The oxidative and glycolytic activities of all three muscles of the great skua were significantly higher than those of the homologous muscles of the herring gull. This was particularly true of the M. pectoralis and M. supracoracoideus. It is suggested that this difference between great skuas and herring gulls enables the former to be more effective aerial kleptoparasites than the latter.  相似文献
