This study compared the hydrology, physiochemistry, and amphibian biomass between a complex of created vernal pools and a complex of natural vernal pools in 2007 in central Ohio, United States. Hydrologic connectivity of surface water and groundwater differed between the natural and the created pool complexes. Surface inundation duration for created pools exceeded that of natural pools, although spring water depths were similar. Dissolved oxygen (p= 0.05) and hourly temperature (p= 0.00) were 1.2% and 1.1% higher, respectively, in the created pools, and conductivity was 1.5% higher (p= 0.00) in the natural pools. Amphibian dip net results found no significant difference in biomass between natural and created pools or family (hylid, ranid, and ambystomatid) biomass in both pool types. Amphibian families were evenly represented by both capture methods in the created wetlands; however, the distribution of families was not even in natural pools and the proportion of ranids was four times greater for samples obtained by funnel traps than dip netting. Eleven years after construction, the created vernal pools did not mimic natural pools in surface inundation and groundwater–surface water exchange, dissolved oxygen, and water temperature. The created pools are perched wetlands and are never likely to mimic reference pool hydrology. Dissolved oxygen and temperature differences are likely due to the separation of surface water and groundwater in the created pools. However, the created pools exhibited a higher taxa diversity than the natural pools due to a more even distribution of organisms between the three families.  相似文献

Vernal pool ecosystems are declining throughout California, with only 10% of historic habitat remaining. This has endangered many specialist endemic plant species, leaving extant populations fragmented, isolated, and threatened or endangered. Recovery plans for the increasing number of endangered vernal pool species require information on their genetic and ecological status to guide conservation and restoration efforts. Federally threatened Neostapfia colusana (Colusa grass) and federally endangered Tuctoria greenei (Greene’s tuctoria) are two endemic vernal pool grasses of high conservation concern in central California. Remaining populations are highly fragmented due to range-wide habitat destruction. Using five polymorphic microsatellite markers for each species, we performed genetic surveys of 240 individuals from eight vernal pools for N. colusana, and 317 individuals from 13 vernal pools for T. greenei. We detected high within-population genetic diversity for both species, with average allelic diversities of 24 alleles/locus (mean Hobs = 0.68, mean Hexp = 0.71) for N. colusana, and 19 alleles/locus (mean Hobs = 0.77, and mean Hexp = 0.79) for T. greenei. Bayesian clustering and AMOVA indicated two genetically distinct population groups for N. colusana (Fst = 0.268, P < 0.0001), and three for T. greenei (Fst = 0.11, P < 0.0001). We found very slight temporal genetic structure at one N. colusana (Fst = 0.013, P < 0.05) and two T. greenei (Fst = 0.015, Fst = 0.018, P < 0.05) pools. These estimates of population genetic diversity and structure are critical measures for both species that will help inform recovery management actions.  相似文献

The fact that several vernal pool restoration and creation attempts in eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey have been paired with conservation of natural pools in the same area provided a valuable research opportunity to compare amphibian habitat quality between project sites and natural reference pools. To measure desired outcomes, we used successful reproduction and metamorphosis of two vernal pool indicator species, the wood frog and spotted salamander. Although many previous studies indicate that restored and created pools rarely replace function lost in the destruction of natural pools, success of vernal pool indicator species was not necessarily related to pool type in this study. Results indicate a strong correlation between reproductive success for both species and vernal pool size (i.e. mean depth and volume), regardless of pool type. Although overall survival rates of wood frog larvae were significantly higher in natural pools with hydroperiods between 12 and 35 weeks, wood frogs were also successful in one restored and one created vernal pool. Salamander survival rates were highest in two natural and two created pools, which had in common both greater volumes and higher proportions of forest land cover in the surrounding 1,000 m. The documented success of vernal pool indicator species in two well‐established created pools demonstrates that pool creation can sometimes restore communities and ecological functions lost, especially when nearby natural pools are degraded or destroyed.  相似文献

The effect of five constant temperatures (16, 20, 24, 28 and 32°C) on the development, survival and reproduction of Neoseiulus barkeri Hughes fed on Aleuroglyphus ovatus Toupeau (Acari: Acaridae) was examined in the laboratory at 85% relative humidity. Development time of different immature stages decreased with increasing temperature, total egg-to-adult development time varied from 5.0 ± 0.13 to 17.5 ± 0.29 days. The lower thermal threshold for development was 9.7 ± 2.48°C and the thermal constant from egg to adult was 111.1 ± 12.34 degree-days. Pre- and post-oviposition period and female longevity all shortened as temperature increased. The longest oviposition period was observed at 24°C with 20.4 ± 1.13 days. At 20, 24, 28 and 32°C, mated females laid on average 0.7 ± 0.08, 1.5 ± 0.04, 1.6 ± 0.11 and 1.5 ± 0.11 eggs per day, respectively, but no eggs were laid at 16°C. Both the maximum fecundity (30.9 eggs per female) and the highest intrinsic rate of increase (r m = 0.166) were obtained at 28°C. The results of this study indicated that a mass rearing of N. barkeri with A. ovatus as prey is feasible at the appropriate temperature.  相似文献

This study evaluated the hydrologic sensitivity of vernal pool ecosystems in the Central Valley of California to climatic changes projected for 2100. A vernal pool water-balance model was used to evaluate rain-fed vernal pools at four locations under future conditions projected by two contrasting global climate models. The potential for change in the duration of continuous inundation, frequency of reproductively suitable inundation events, and the seasonal distribution of inundation was quantified. The potential impact of hydrologic changes varied by species and by location. Three scales of response were identified: (a) At the regional scale, pools in the middle of the Central Valley near Merced were the most responsive to climatic changes. (b) At the local scale, smaller, shallower pools had the greatest potential to change the distribution of reproductively suitable habitat available to branchiopods. (c) At the individual pool scale, changes in precipitation will dominate changes in temperature, resulting in relatively linear responses in the duration of inundation. The ecological impact of these changes will be determined by a balance between the increasing suitability of vernal pools for branchiopod predators and the hydrologic improvement of currently marginal habitats.  相似文献

The endangered annual plant Limnanthes floccosa ssp. californica Arroyo is restricted to vernal pools in Butte County, California. To identify populations with unique genetic resources, guide reintroduction efforts, and design seed collection scenarios for long-term ex situ seed storage we determined extant genetic diversity and structure by surveying 457 individuals from 21 distinct populations using nine polymorphic microsatellite markers. We found low within population genetic diversity: low allelic diversity (1.9 [0.06 SE] alleles/locus); low heterozygosity (H obs = 0.10 ± 0.018, H exp = 0.19 ± 0.015), and a high fixation index (0.556 ± 0.044). The number of polymorphic loci ranged between 11 and 89%. Bayesian ordination determined 20 distinct populations and we found high genetic structure among these (F st = 0.65, P < 0.0001). We identified notable gene flow barriers across populations, confirming regional structuring between three previously defined population density centers and two outlying populations (F st = 0.21, P < 0.0001). Population size estimates ranged between ~50 and >5,000 extant plants per site. Our study confirms previous isozyme-based results and suggests that the loss of any population would represent a significant loss in the species’ genetic diversity. Recovery requires active restoration of existing populations and permanent habitat protection. We recommend close comparison of microhabitats of declining populations with genetically similar populations, to determine the potential for human assisted gene flow via seed movement to recover declining populations.  相似文献

The growth, hematology, and immune responses of subadult Chinese sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis) (avg. wt. 25.11 ± 3.74 kg) were determined at three water temperature levels (12, 18, and 24°C) × three concentrations of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) (0.05 ± 0.02, 1.03 ± 0.04, and 2.03 ± 0.05 mg/L) for 90 days in recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). At the end of the experiment, all fish were weighed and serum was collected for analysis using biochemical parameters. The temperature level had significant effects on the growth and hematology responses of subadult Chinese sturgeon under the RAS conditions. The specific growth rate (SGR) of subadult Chinese sturgeon was highest at 18°C compared to other temperatures; at this temperature, the total antioxidant capacity (T‐AOC), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and lysozyme (LZM) activities were also the highest (p < 0.05). As the temperature rose, the oxygen consumption rate and ammonia excretion rates significantly increased (p < 0.05). In addition, there was no effect of TAN level on ammonia excretion rates of subadult Chinese sturgeon, while the oxygen consumption rate was greater in the high TAN group compared with the other groups (p < 0.05). The SGR of the fish was markedly reduced when the TAN level rose, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), blood ammonia (BA), malondialdehyde (MDA) and cortisol in the serum were significantly elevated when the fish were in high TAN water for 90 days (p < 0.05), T‐AOC and LZM activities in the serum clearly decreased, indicating that the antioxidant system and nonspecific immune mechanism of subadult Chinese sturgeon appeared to be inhibited, which could raise the sensitivity of the Chinese sturgeon to various pathogens. The results of this study indicate that subadult Chinese sturgeon could achieve normal growth in the RAS, but that growth and hematology were significantly affected when the TAN concentration in the water was higher than 2 mg/L for an extended period.  相似文献

In order to gain insight into the effect of watershed conditions on fluctuations in stream water temperature, we statistically analyzed water temperature data for 1 year, using root mean square (Rms) and harmonic (A Amplitude, φ delay time) methods. The average values of delay time (days) between air and water temperatures (T a and T w) of small (< 0.5 ha), medium (0.5–100 ha) and large (> 100 ha) watersheds were 4.53 ± 0.82 days, 11.83 ± 3.88 days and 4.45 ± 1.52 days, respectively. Fluctuations in stream water temperature expressed by Rms (Rms T w/Rms T a) and harmonic methods (A −T w/A −T a) in the medium-sized watersheds with moderate slope gradients were 0.37 ± 0.09 and 0.56 ± 0.14, respectively. These values increased in the larger watersheds with low slope gradients, including five large rivers covered by various landscapes, with their averages of 0.53 ± 0.09 and 0.78 ± 0.09, respectively, indicating the influences of solar radiation and heat transfer processes. In the smaller watersheds with high slope gradients, these values were 0.73 ± 0.02 and 0.87 ± 0.03, respectively, suggesting that shorter passage time affected water temperatures. With respect to forest type, these values at badly managed hinoki forest watersheds (0.45 ± 0.04 and 0.73 ± 0.07) were larger than those at broadleaf forest (0.34 ± 0.04 and 0.51 ± 0.12) and well-managed hinoki forest (0.33 ± 0.04 and 0.51 ± 0.07) watersheds, indicating different proportions of flow paths.  相似文献

Life cycle and behaviour of Cunaxatricha tarsospinosa Castro & Den Heyer from rubber trees in Brazil were studied, with Tenuipalpus heveae Baker offered as prey. The study was conducted at 25.4 ± 0.2°C, 83 ± 5% RH and 12:12 h L:D photophase. The egg stage was the longest immature stage, lasting 17.1 ± 1.3 days (mean ± SE); total juvenile development was completed in 33.2 ± 2.8 days. Lifetime fecundity was 12.0 ± 2.2 eggs. Intrinsic rate of population increase was low, suggesting that T. heveae may not be a good prey for the predator. All specimens of C. tarsospinosa collected in the field for this study were females, no males were found. Concurrently, only females were obtained in the laboratory. This seems to be the first report of thelytokous parthenogenesis for cunaxids. Similar to earlier reports for some Cunaxinae and Coleoscirinae, prey were captured when predators were actively searching for them.  相似文献

The small ant Camponotus anderseni lives exclusively in twigs of the mangrove tree Sonneratia alba, and during inundation, the entrance hole is blocked with a soldier’s head which effectively prevents flooding. The nests can be very crowded, with the ants and coccids filling up to 50% of the volume, and due to their metabolic activity, the conditions in the nests during inundation become hypercapnic and hypoxic. Each nest has only one entrance, and the opening is quite small (1.56 ± 0.03 mm). The mean diameter of the galleries is 2.31 ± 0.23 mm, independent of the thickness of the twig and length of the nest. During normal conditions with open nests, the oxygen depletion is substantial in the part of the nest most distant from the opening, and in a 120 mm long nest the oxygen concentration can be as low as 15.7%. During simulated inundation, in which the nest entrances were blocked, the oxygen concentration dropped to very low levels (<0.5%) after one hour. After opening the nest entrance, the oxygen concentration increased again, but for a 100 mm long nest it took nearly 20 minutes before the concentration was back to the normal depressed level. Mathematical modelling of the steady-state oxygen concentrations in the innermost part of the nests shows a lower O2 concentration than calculated. The time for equilibration of oxygen after inundation is longer than expected for small nests, presumably because the passive diffusion is obstructed by the nest contents. The “dilemma” faced by C. anderseni is to avoid drowning without suffering anoxia or hypercapnia, and they show a remarkable ability to adapt to the extreme conditions in the mangrove and exploit a niche where the density of other ants is insignificant. Abstract The present abundance and historical spread of an exotic grass, Agrostis avenacea, is documented for California, USA, and for the vernal pools of San Diego County in particular. Agrostis avenacea is native to Australia where it is a common grass of ephemeral and fluctuating wetlands. California vernal pools, by reason of their extreme variability and high endemism, have been thought to be relatively resistant to invasion. The recent expansion of A. avenacea in San Diego County demonstrates, however, that the alleged resistance is probably a function of a relatively small pool of invaders and a low probability of targeted dispersal. Although A. avenacea is now abundant in pools with little current disturbance, human disturbance appears to have been a major factor that facilitated its initial establishment. This specific instance adds to the mounting evidence that there are probably few, if any, habitats immune to invasion.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the spray‐drying process on the inactivation of Salmonella choleraesuis and Salmonella typhimurium spiked in liquid porcine plasma and to test the additive effect of immediate postdrying storage. Commercial spray‐dried porcine plasma was sterilized by irradiation and then reconstituted (1:9) with sterile water. Aliquots of reconstituted plasma were inoculated with either S. choleraesuis or S. typhimurium, subjected to spray‐drying at an inlet temperature of 200°C and an outlet temperature of either 71 or 80°C, and each spray‐drying temperature combinations were subjected to either 0, 30 or 60 s of residence time (RT) as a simulation of residence time typical of commercial dryers. Spray‐dried samples were stored at either 4·0 ± 3·0°C or 23·0 ± 0·3°C for 15 days. Bacterial counts of each Salmonella spp., were completed for all samples. For both Salmonella spp., spray‐drying at both outlet temperatures reduced bacterial counts about 3 logs at RT 0 s, while there was about a 5·5 log reduction at RT 60 s. Storage of all dried samples at either 4·0 ± 3·0°C or 23·0 ± 0·3°C for 15 days eliminate all detectable bacterial counts of both Salmonella spp.

Significance and Impact of the Study

Safety of raw materials from animal origin like spray‐dried porcine plasma (SDPP) may be a concern for the swine industry. Spray‐drying process and postdrying storage are good inactivation steps to reduce the bacterial load of Salmonella choleraesuis and Salmonella typhimurium. For both Salmonella spp., spray‐drying at 71°C or 80°C outlet temperatures reduced bacterial counts about 3 log at residence time (RT) 0 s, while there was about a 5.5 log reduction at RT 60 s. Storage of all dried samples at either 4.0 ± 3.0°C or 23.0 ± 0.3°C for 15 days was effective for eliminating detectable bacterial counts of both Salmonella spp.  相似文献

Questions

Do livestock grazing and seasonal precipitation structure species composition in montane vernal pools? Which grazing and precipitation variables best predict cover of vernal pool specialists and species with broader habitat requirements? Is vernal pool species diversity correlated with livestock exclosure, and at what spatial scales?

Location

Montane vernal pools, northeast California, USA.

Methods

Vegetation was sampled in 20 vernal pools, including pools where livestock had been excluded for up to 20 years We compared plant species composition, functional group composition and species diversity among sites that varied in grazing history and seasonal precipitation using CCA and LMM.

Results

Although vernal pool specialists were dominant in montane vernal pools, over a third of plant cover was comprised of species that occur over a broad range of wetland or upland environments. The species composition of vernal pool plant communities was influenced by both livestock grazing and precipitation patterns, however the relative effects of these environmental variables differed by functional group. Livestock exclosures favoured perennial vernal pool specialists over annual vernal pool specialists. In contrast, the cover of habitat generalists was more strongly influenced by seasonal precipitation than livestock grazing. At small spatial scales, species richness and diversity decreased as the number of years a pool had been fenced increased, but this relationship was not significant at a larger spatial scale.

Conclusions

Both livestock grazing and seasonal precipitation structure the montane vernal pool plant community. We found that livestock grazing promotes the cover of annual vernal pool specialists, but at the expense of perennial vernal pool specialists. Wetter vernal pools, however, support higher cover of wetland generalist species regardless of whether pools are grazed.  相似文献

Nutritional deficiency associated with reduced thiamine (vitamin B1) and reduced natural reproduction of salmonid species in the Great Lake Region is well established. The negative relationship between egg thiamine and lipid concentration to post-hatch larval growth and survival in teleost species, coupled with the limited research of egg thiamine in Acipenseriform species of conservation concern, including lake sturgeon, indicates that study of thiamine concentrations lake sturgeon eggs is warranted. Eggs were collected from females (N = 12) during the early and late portion of the spawning run in 2007 in a wild population from Black Lake, MI. Concentrations of thiamine, lipid and fatty acid concentration were measured along with female biological information (body size and egg size) and characteristics of larvae at hatch. Significant differences in egg thiamine concentrations were observed between early- and late-spawning females (mean ± SD: 2.36 nmol·g−1 ± 1.09 vs. 0.73 ± 0.25 nmol·g−1, W = 0.05, p < .01). No significant relationships were observed between female body size or egg size and egg lipid or thiamine concentration. Differences in lipid and thiamine concentrations were not predictive of larval body size or yolk sac volume at hatch. Total and phosphorylated thiamine were correlated with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, suggesting that dietary items were likely partially responsible for provisioning of essential compounds. Given the negative effects of low egg thiamine concentration on larval survival in other fish species globally, results indicate that further research in areas of nutrient acquisition and thiamine effects on larval survival, natural recruitment, and hatchery feeding strategies is warranted for lake sturgeon.  相似文献

Aconophora compressa (Hemiptera: Membracidae), a biological control agent introduced against the weed Lantana camara (Verbenaceae) in Australia, has since been observed on several non-target plant species, including native mangrove Avicennia marina (Acanthaceae). In this study we evaluated the suitability of two native mangroves, A. marina and Aegiceras corniculatum (Myrsinaceae), for the survival and development of A. compressa through no-choice field cage studies. The longevity of females was significantly higher on L. camara (57.7 ± 3.8 days) than on A. marina (43.3 ± 3.3 days) and A. corniculatum (45.7 ± 3.8 days). The proportion of females laying eggs was highest on L. camara (72%) followed by A. marina (36%) and A. corniculatum (17%). More egg batches per female were laid on L. camara than on A. marina and A. corniculatum. Though more nymphs per shoot emerged on L. camara (29.9 ± 2.8) than on A. marina (13 ± 4.8) and A. corniculatum (10 ± 5.3), the number of nymphs that developed through to adults was not significantly different. The duration of nymphal development was longer on A. marina (67 ± 5.8 days) than on L. camara (48 ± 4 days) and A. corniculatum (43 ± 4.6 days). The results, which are in contrast to those from previous glasshouse and quarantine trials, provide evidence that A. compressa adults can survive, lay eggs and complete nymphal development on the two non-target native mangroves in the field under no-choice condition.  相似文献

Conservation practitioners widely agree that optimal conservation strategies will maximize the amount of genetic variation preserved in target taxa, but there is ongoing debate about how that variation should be distributed through restoration and mitigation activities. Here, we evaluate the impacts of ~10 years of mitigation on the population genetic structure of Limnanthes vinculans, a state- and federally-listed endangered plant species restricted to ephemeral vernal pool wetlands in the Santa Rosa Plain of California. Using microsatellite loci to estimate patterns of neutral molecular variation, we found that created pools support similar levels of variation in L. vinculans as natural pools. Habitat creation and seed translocation have not disrupted the largest-scale patterns of population structure across the species range, but a concentration of mitigation activity towards the range center has reduced the extent of isolation-by-distance operating in this region and shifted the location of at least one genetic boundary. Patterns of genetic variation among populations in remnant vernal pools reveal that gene flow has historically occurred beyond the scale of individual pools at the center of the species range, while small genetic populations have differentiated around the range margins. On average, L. vinculans in created pools exhibit less cover and more restricted local distributions than those in remnant pools, but these patterns were driven by two particularly productive natural sites rather than consistent differences between natural and created sites. We conclude that mitigation activities have changed the historical patterns of gene flow within the species range to a moderate degree, that these changes will likely impact remnant pools through gene flow, and that current created sites provide less heterogeneous habitat for L. vinculans than do natural pools. Studies that track individual plants will be needed to determine if the changes in gene flow due to mitigation will have positive or negative impacts on the demographic and microevolutionary trajectories of L. vinculans. More generally, this study provides a retrospective analysis of the outcome of managing an endangered plant species through intensive mitigation, and yields several insights to inform future conservation strategies.  相似文献

The importance of assessing spatial data at multiple scales when modelling species–environment relationships has been highlighted by several empirical studies. However, no landscape genetics studies have optimized landscape resistance surfaces by evaluating relevant spatial predictors at multiple spatial scales. Here, we model multiscale/layer landscape resistance surfaces to estimate resistance to inferred gene flow for two vernal pool breeding salamander species, spotted (Ambystoma maculatum) and marbled (A. opacum) salamanders. Multiscale resistance surface models outperformed spatial layers modelled at their original spatial scale. A resistance surface with forest land cover at a 500‐m Gaussian kernel bandwidth and normalized vegetation index at a 100‐m Gaussian kernel bandwidth was the top optimized resistance surface for A. maculatum, while a resistance surface with traffic rate and topographic curvature, both at a 500‐m Gaussian kernel bandwidth, was the top optimized resistance surface for A. opacum. Species‐specific resistant kernels were fit at all vernal pools in our study area with the optimized multiscale/layer resistance surface controlling kernel spread. Vernal pools were then evaluated and scored based on surrounding upland habitat (local score) and connectivity with other vernal pools on the landscape, with resistant kernels driving vernal pool connectivity scores. As expected, vernal pools that scored highest were in areas within forested habitats and with high vernal pool densities and low species‐specific landscape resistance. Our findings highlight the success of using a novel analytical approach in a multiscale framework with applications beyond vernal pool amphibian conservation.  相似文献

The thyroid functions of breastfed infants, as well as (indirectly) the development of their central nervous system, are dependent on the iodine status of the lactating mother. Purkinje cell protein-2 is a cell-specific marker of the cerebellum Purkinje cell and is a suitable indicator for observing the postnatal development of the cerebellum after birth. We measured the Purkinje cell protein-2 mRNA and protein levels in the rat cerebellum in the critical postnatal (14 days after birth) and maturation periods (28 days after birth) to determine the effect of different nutritional iodine levels on cerebellum growth in the offspring during lactation. We found that severe iodine deficiency resulted in thyroid dysfunction in lactating rats and their offspring on both 14 and 28 days, showing maternal total T4 16.7 ± 12.0 vs 36.4 ± 15.0, P < 0.05 (14 days) and 22.6 ± 18.7 vs 53.4 ± 9.4, P < 0.01 (28 days), and neonatal total T4 10.6 ± 2.3 vs 16.4 ± 4.7, P < 0.01(14 days) and 12.8 ± 2.9 vs 16.7 ± 3.4, P < 0.05 (28 days), respectively. The Purkinje cell protein-2 mRNA and its protein levels in offspring rats were significantly reduced that showed Purkinje cell protein-2 mRNA 1.12 ± 0.04 vs 2.25 ± 0.53, P < 0.05 (14 days) and 1.74 ± 0.94 vs 8.69 ± 2.71, P < 0.01 (28 days). However, mild iodine deficiency and excessive iodine maintained almost normal thyroid function in maternal and neonatal rats and normal Purkinje cell protein-2 mRNA and protein levels in offspring’s cerebellum. We conclude that severe iodine deficiency could significantly reduce Purkinje cell protein-2 mRNA and its protein levels, indicating that the cerebellum development was retarded, but mild iodine deficiency and excessive iodine could maintain them at an approximately normal level by the mother’s and offspring’s compensations, especially by the mother’s mammary glands.  相似文献

The life table of the indigenous Neoseiulus californicus was studied at different temperatures and 65 ± 5% relative humidity under conditions of 16 h light : 8 h dark (LD 16:8). The total developmental period from egg to adult varied from 3.0 to 14.0 days at 15 to 35°C. Survival to adulthood ranges from 86.21 to 93.94%, with the highest rate at 25°C. The lower threshold temperature from egg to adult stages of females and males was 10.84 and 10.72°C, respectively, and the thermal constant was 57.14 degree‐days (DD) for females and 56.18 DD for males. Total number of eggs laid by each female was the highest (70.38 eggs) at 25°C, whereas average daily fecundity was the highest (3.69 eggs/female/day) at 30°C. The net reproductive rate was the highest (48.49) at 25°C and lowest (26.18) at 30°C. Mean generation time decreased from 19.04 to 11.47 days with increasing temperature from 20 to 30°C. Both intrinsic rate of natural increase (0.284) and finite rate of increase (1.32) were maximum at 30°C. Adult longevity was the highest (42.75 days for females and 32.60 days for males) at 20°C and lowest (22.70 days for females and 15.30 days for males) at 30°C. Sex ratio was female biased and was the highest (78.08) at 25°C and lowest (70.24) at 30°C. Developmental data of five constant temperatures, temperature thresholds and thermal requirements may be used to predict the occurrence, number of generations and population dynamics of N. californicus as an important biocontrol agent of Tetranychus urticae.  相似文献

It is critical to determine the methods by which coral colonies regenerate tissue lost to physical injury as they provide the physical structure of coral reef systems. To explore regeneration, circular lesions (12 mm diameter × 3 mm depth) were created in the fall of 2014 on 124 Montastraea cavernosa colonies located in the coastal waters of Grenada and Carriacou (10–12 m depth). Coral regeneration was documented at weekly intervals for 28 days. Repeated measures ANOVA on estimated weekly coral regeneration rates showed that island (p = 0.024) and colony colour (p = 0.024) were the only factors significantly affecting lesion regeneration. Mean rate of lesion closure during the first 28 days was approximately 2.8 mm2 d−1. Four identical circular lesions were created on 30 M. cavernosa colonies (Carriacou, 10–12 m depth) in the fall of 2015. One representative lesion created on each coral colony was re-sampled at each of 14, 21, and 32 or 33 days following injury, and coral tissue was flash-frozen. Tissues from 10 normally pigmented brown colonies were selected for proteomic analysis using tandem mass tags. The initial polyp sample, the day 14, and the final samples were used to quantify the difference in protein abundance as the lesions healed. In the tissue samples 6419 peptides were reliably identified, which corresponded to 906 unique proteins. During the first month of regeneration, 111 proteins were differentially abundant (p < 0.05) on at least one timepoint and of these, 11 were associated with regeneration. An additional 14 proteins were also identified that were differentially abundant (p < 0.05) and were associated with inflammation or antioxidant activity. This work demonstrates, for the first time, the differential abundance of proteins associated with regeneration in a scleractinian coral.
