Mites of the genus Veigaia are common gamasid inhabitants of forest litter. They engage in the peculiar reproductive strategy of podospermy which, along with other morphological and behavioral adaptations, involves modification of the chelicerae of the relatively rare males into gonopods. Each movable digit is provided with an appendage (spermatodactyl) that is involved in sperm transfer. We describe the gross anatomy, fine structure, and functional morphology of the mouthparts of a male Veigaia species and give ultrastructural details for the corniculi, laciniae, preoral cavity, labrum, pharynx, and movable and fixed digits. The fine structure of the spermatodactyl is illustrated here for the first time in detail. A semischematic reconstruction of the gnathosoma and spermatodactyl is provided. The spermatodactyl is totally fused with the movable digit and a sperm transfer duct runs along its entire length. This duct starts at the adaxial base of the movable digit, continues inside the digit into the tube of the spermatodactyl, and finally opens at the distal abaxial surface of the spermatodactyl. Several sensory structures associated with the spermatodactyl probably provide the male with mechanical and chemical clues.  相似文献

Males of Parasitina and Dermanyssina (Gamasida = Mesostigmata) have chelicerae modified to function as gonopods. The slit-like spermatotreme in the movable digit of the chela in males of Parasitina was studied in three species: in Pergamasus quisquiliarum and Holoparasitus sp. a rather simple slit is indeed present, whereas in Vulgarogamasus kraepelini the structure is represented by a fine duct traversing the movable digit. The spermatodactyl studied in two phytoseioid species (Phytoseiulus persimilis, Blattisocius dentriticus) of Dermanyssina is a slender process arising from the movable digit and containing a fine duct which is formed by cuticular folds. The spermatodactyl of these species thus differs remarkably from that described in Veigaia sp. The diversity of these structures seen in the few taxa studied up to now is discussed under functional and systematic aspects.  相似文献

The ameroseiid mite Hattena cometis has a male genital system that consists of an unpaired, u‐shaped testis and paired deferent ducts leading into an unpaired accessory genital gland and ejaculatory duct. The genital opening is located anteriorly immediately in front of the sternal shield. Spermatogenesis is simple, probably due to the haploid nature of the male. Eight stages of spermatogenesis could be roughly distinguished. Mature spermatozoa as found in the deferent duct lumen are peculiar in having a bisected nucleus and numerous peripheral flat chambers, which were formed from indentations of the plasmalemma. In inseminated females, spermatozoa were observed in the syncytial tissue of the sperm access system and in the somatic cells of the ovary. These spermatozoa have achieved a new structure, i.e., an electron‐dense plate dividing the cell into two unequal halves. The dense plate has an intricate substructure. Its function is unknown. These sperm cells are considered to represent capacitated spermatozoa. The peripheral chambers are reduced in number inside the female. Similar sperm cells, containing a dense plate, were seen in vacuoles within the epithelium of the deferent duct of one male. These cells are evidently under destruction, but before being completely dissolved had undergone a development leading beyond that of the mature sperm cells found in the deferent duct. Apparently, entering the cell of the deferent duct epithelium or the syncytium tissue triggers the production of the dense plate (or the capacitation process). Our observations are compared with results obtained from other anactinotrichid Acari, mainly Gamasida, and confirm and complete the interpretation of the correlated evolution of components of gamasid reproductive systems. Veigaiidae are predatory gamasid mites with a controversial systematic position. Some authors see a close relationship with Parasitina, others with Dermanyssina. Since the morphology of the genital system is of high relevance in terms of the systematics of Gamasida, we have carefully studied the ultrastructure of the female reproductive system. It consists of two parts, one which accepts spermatozoa (sperm access system), and the other which produces and delivers eggs. Since we have already published a detailed account of the sperm access system we add only some further information here on that system and focus instead on egg production and delivery. The unpaired gonad is divided into a germinal and a nutritive region, the latter of which is a compact structure as in Parasitina and does not show lateral arms as seen in most studied Dermanyssina. The oviduct (uterus, vaginal duct) is an unpaired structure that terminates in a vagina (genital atrium) covered by the genital plate. Two small vaginal glands open into the vagina, which is provided with a peculiar interlocking system. First observations on spermatozoa found in one female reveal similarities with those of Parasitina. Our results are discussed under morphological aspects and compared with other gamasid mites. In conclusion, the veigaiids show some peculiar features that are shared either with Parasitina or with Dermanyssina. These observations make it difficult to simply assume that the Veigaiidae belong either to the Dermanyssina or to the Parasitina. They appear instead to comprise an intermediate entity.  相似文献

The structure of the sensory organs situated on palps and chelicerae of the quill mite Syringophilopsis fringilla (Fritsch, 1958) was examined with the use of scanning and transmitting electron microscopy. The tarsal segment of the palps bears 8 sensilla of three types: two contact chemo-mechanoreceptor sensilla, a single chemoreceptor (olfactory) sensillum, and five tactile mechanoreceptor sensilla. All other sensilla situated on basal palpal segments and on cheliceral stylets are represented exclusively by tactile mechanoreceptors. A proprioceptor sensillum was revealed in the movable digit of chelicerae; the modified cilia of dendrites of 5 sensory neurons of this sensillum run inside the inner non-sclerotized core of the stylet and end at different levels in its apical part, attaching to electron-dense rods connected with a sclerotized sheath of the stylet. The authors assume that the proprioceptor sensillum of the stylet detects the strength of the pressure of the stylet of the movable digit on the quill wall during its piercing, and palpal sensilla determine the optimal place for this process.  相似文献

In previous studies plant feeding behavior of plant- and non-plant feeding phytoseiids was never examined directly. Moreover, in these studies the cheliceral morphology of phytoseiids was not associated with their ability to feed on plants. In the present study, we monitored the plant-feeding behavior of Euseius scutalis and Amblyseius swirskii. Only E. scutalis was observed penetrating the leaf surface with the movable digit and feeding. Second, using a dye and coloring the gut as an indicator for feeding, we found that E. scutalis pierced an artificial membrane and fed whereas A. swirskii did not. Finally, to identify morphological characteristics typical of plant feeders versus non-plant feeders, we used scanning electron microscopy to examine the adaxial (inner) profile of the chelicerae in 13 phytoseiid species. The only parameter that distinguished between plant- and non-plant feeders was the ratio of the dorsal perimeter length of the fixed digit to the ventral perimeter length of the movable digit. Plant-feeders were characterized by ratio values greater than one whereas the values for non plant-feeders were lower than one. We suggest that a shorter and less curved movable digit, expressed by a high ratio, will facilitate the penetration of the leaf surface. Cheliceral traits proposed here as typical of plant feeders, were observed for five genera, indicating that plant-feeding may be more common in the Phytoseiidae than previously reported. We propose that the ability to feed on plants be added as a cross type trait of phytoseiid life-style types.  相似文献

An investigation of gamasid mites on the body surface of small mammals was carried out in Yunnan Province of China from 1990 to 2004. The small mammal hosts were captured from 25 counties which represent five geographical subregions, namely Middle Subregion of Hengduan Mountains, Southern Subregion of Hengduan Mountains, Eastern Plateau Subregion of Yunnan, Western Plateau Subregion of Yunnan and Southern Moun- tainous Subregion of Yunnan. The captured 10 803 small mammal hosts belong to nine families, 29 genera and 52 species in four orders (Rodentia, Insectivora, Scandentia and Lagomorpha). A total of 68 571 gamasid mites were collected from the body surface of the captured small mammal hosts and all the gamasid mites were identified to 10 families, 33 genera and 112 species. This paper lists all the mite species, together with their taxonomic position (genera and families) and their corresponding hosts. Much more mite species were found in the Middle Subregion of Hengduan Mountains than in other geographical subregions. The total individuals of mites and small mammals in the Middle Subregion of Hengduan Mountains are also the most plentiful in the five geographical subregions. Three dominant mite species and three dominant small mammal hosts were determined as the dominant species in the investigated areas of Yunnan Province. The dominant hosts are Rattus flavipectus (which accounts for 34.85% of the total individuals), Apodemus chevrieri (13.43%) and Rattus norvegicus (10.40%) while the dominant gamasid mite species are Laelaps nuttalli (Hirst, 1915) (27.84%), Laelaps echidninus (Berlese, 1887) (18.38%) and Laelaps guizhouensis (Gu et Wang, 1981) (14.79%). The results showed the high species diversity of gamasid mites in Yunnan Province and the uneven distribution feature in different subregions.  相似文献

In this paper I synthesize original and published studies of sperm transfer behaviour of 23 genera of water mites from 15 families. The morphology of spermatophores from 16 genera (12 families) is described. Behaviour and/or spermatophores are described for the first time for the following species: Hydrachna magniscutata Marshall, Hydrachna hesperia Lundblad, Hydrachna sp. nr. leegei Koenike, Limnochares americana Lundblad, Limnesia undulata (Müller), Neumania distincta Marshall, Unionicola (three species in the U. crassipes-complex), Thyas slolli Koenike, Lebertia annae Habeeb, Lebertia sp., Piona sp. nr. debilis (Wolcott), Tiphys vernalis (Habeeb), Arrenurus dentipetiolatus Marshall, Arrenurus marshalli Piersig and Arrenurus birgei Marshall. On the basis of proximity of male and female during sperm transfer, I divide water mites into four groups: complete dissociation, involving no physical or chemical contact between the sexes (nine genera); incomplete dissociation, requiring distance-or contact-chemoreception but not involving pairing behaviour (five genera); pairing with indirect transfer, involving pairing behaviour with females controlling sperm uptake (three genera); pairing with direct transfer (=copulation), involving pairing behaviour and male placement of sperm in the receiving structure of the female (12 genera). Four genera have representative species in more than one category of sperm transfer. Factors possibly leading to the diversity of water mite mating behaviour include an evolutionarily flexible mode of sperm transfer in the ancestral water mite, and the development of planktonic and endoparasitic habits in many mites. Morphological features of spermatophores that improve physical stability, probability of females taking up sperm and resistance against osmotic stress are discussed. Finally, I present implications of mating behaviour and spermatophore morphology for phylogenetic relationships within water mites and between this group and terrestrial Acari.  相似文献

Several parts of the reproductive system of both sexes ofDermatophagoides farinae andD. pteronyssinus are investigated and compared by light-, scanning electron-, and transmission electron microscopy. New techniques have been employed for scanning of the internal structures of these mites. The male reproductive system consists of unpaired testis, paired vasa deferentia, an accessory gland, ejaculatory duct, and copulatory organ. The female reproductive system consists of bursa copulatrix, ductus bursae, receptaculum seminis, paired ducti receptaculi, ovaries, oviducts, one chorion gland, ovipositor, and oviporus. Testis as well as ovaries are characterized by syncytia of nutritional function. The specifics of spermatogenesis are discussed in connection with sperm transfer. Similarities between the construction of the ovaries and oogenesis in astigmatic mites and telotrophic meroistic ovaries in insects are discussed.  相似文献

The species diversity and habitat relations of gamasid mites from nests of the field vole (Microtus agrestis L.) were studied in the middle taiga subzone of the Republic of Karelia. The fauna of gamasid mites on the field vole, in its nests, and in the forest litter is very diverse, comprising 49 species with a complex taxonomic structure (22 genera, 12 families) and a variety of life strategies (necrophages, zoophages, and hematophages). The fauna of gamasid mites is most diverse in the nests of M. agrestis and includes both primitive free-living forms and specialized obligatory (epizoic) parasites. The group with the highest diversity of mite species is that from the nest of M. agrestis, with the diversity index amounting to 2.65 (30 species, 18 genera, 11 families).  相似文献

Abstract A total of 70 species of gamasid mites (7485 individuals) were collected from the body surface of 38 species of small mammals (3023 individuals) during an investigation of 13 counties of western Yunnan, China, from 1990 to 1996. Most species of gamasid mites have more females (80% 100%) than males (P <0.01). Exceptions are Haemogamasus gongshanensis where males outnumber females (P < 0.01) and Haemolaelaps glasgowi where there are similar numbers of males and females (P > 0.05). No larva was found in most of the mite species. The proportion of individuals at the immature stages (mainly protonymphs and deutonymphs) in most mite species is small (0–12.84%) compared to the adults (P < 0.01). Exceptions are Ornithonyssus bacoti and Haemolaelaps glasgowi where 62.84% and 49.48% respectively are nymphs. The biased sex ratios may reflect the probable different bloodsucking preferences and parthenogenesis of the gamasid mites. The absence of larvae and a low proportion of nymph stages in most mite species probably reflect that the larvae or nymphs of most mite species are non‐feeding or non‐blood sucking and are in their hosts' nests. Another possibility is that some species directly produce protonymphs or even deutonymphs without eggs and larvae which makes it difficult to find the larval stage.  相似文献

New data are presented on the ectoparasite fauna of several species of vesper and horseshoe bats (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae, Rhinolophidae) of the Crimean Peninsula. In the studied territory, 11 species of ectoparasites (mites and insects) have been collected from 6 bat species; 2 of the ectoparasite species were new to Crimea. Findings of gamasid mites Ichoronyssus scutatus on an unusual host are discussed. The gamasid mite Spinturnix emarginatus (Acari: Mesostigmata: Gamasina) is described for the territory of Russia for the first time.  相似文献

Abstract. The sabellid polychaete, Terebrasabella heterouncinata, forms burrows in gastropod shells. It is a small, intratubular brooder that breeds semi‐continuously. It has been shown to self‐fertilize, but its reproductive biology suggests that some form of sperm transfer must occur between individuals. To gain an understanding of its fertilization biology, the ultrastructure of spermiogenesis and the sperm in T. heterouncinata was described, and the animal examined for sperm storage structures. Spermiogenesis occurs in clusters of eight spermatids. The mature sperm has an elongate nucleus and a bilaterally symmetrical acrosome with twisted subacrosomal spaces. The midpiece is short, with three crescent‐shaped mitochondria, and forms a tight sheath around the axoneme. A single spermatheca, which opens on the inner ventral part of the crown near the buccal region, is present. It is a simple blind‐ending duct that runs below the ventral nerve cord and is longer than 100 μm. This is the first record of a single spermatheca in Sabellidae. The shape of the sperm and the presence of a spermatheca confirm that individuals of T. heterouncinata produce ent‐aquasperm and would normally cross‐fertilize.  相似文献

The male genital system of the actinotrichid mite Rhagidia halophila is described and compared with other mites and arachnids. The large testes are composed of germinal and glandular parts and produce numerous small sperm cells. The glandular parts are connected via a testicular bridge. Spermiogenesis occurs in cysts containing spermatids in equal stages of development. Cysts of spermatids are embedded in huge somatic cells. The nuclei of the spermatids loose their envelope. Mature sperm cells are simple exhibiting a ring‐shaped chromatin body and lacking an acrosomal complex. They are most similar to the sperm cells of the related mite Linopodes motatorius. The spermatopositor contains the ejaculatory duct divided into a dorsal channel and a ventral channel that are connected via a narrow passage. At its distal end, the spermatopositor is divided into three eugenital lips. The function of the spermatopositor during deposition of the peculiar thread‐like spermatophores is discussed. Details of the sensilla of the spermatopositor and the progenital lips are reported. The genital papillae located on the inner side of the progenital lips exhibit characteristics of cells performing transport of ions and/or water. The results confirm the overall similarity of actinotrichid genital systems, which is profoundly different from that of anactinotrichid mites. With reference to other Arachnida it is corroborated that testes and sperm structure of Actinotrichida are most similar to that of Solifugae. However, synapomorphies between sperm cells of Rhagidia and Solifugae that could suggest a closer relationship between these two taxa as was suggested in earlier studies were not recognizable. On the contrary, the sperm cells of Rh. halophila being devoid of an acrosomal complex appeared to be more apomorphic than those of many other actinotrichid mites as well as Solifugae. J. On Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum cv. S 22), the eriophyid mite Abacarus hystrix usually fed on the bulliform epidermal cells at the base of the grooves on the adaxial leaf surface. Scanning electron micrographs illustrate (1) the external morphology of the mouthparts of the mites, (2) how, prior to feeding, they remove cuticular leaf wax with their rostra and (3) feeding punctures in epidermal cells made by the styliform chelicerae. Of eleven graminaceous species tested, A. hystrix only settled on Festuca pratensis, L. perenne and L. multiflorum. On L. multiflorum, the mites preferred the youngest leaves and on mature leaves, preferred the youngest part.  相似文献

以云南省57种医学革螨作为分类单元,以形态特征为主列出60项分类性状特征来探讨云南省医学革螨不同属和种的亲缘关系。运用SPSS 11.5 统计软件中的系统聚类分析和主成分分析,对57种医学革螨进行了数值分类分析。结果显示:57种医学革螨划分为厉螨科(La elapidae)、寄螨科(Parasitidae)、皮刺螨科(Dermanyssidae)、赫刺螨科(Hirstionyssidae)和裂胸螨科(Aceosejidae)5个类群。赫刺螨属和棘刺螨属从厉螨科中分离出来另立为赫刺螨科,柏氏禽刺螨归入了皮刺螨科而不是巨刺螨科。分类结果与传统形态分类结果基本一致,因而认为数值分类能比较客观地反映医学革螨各分类阶元的分类地位与亲缘关系。  相似文献
