The male reproductive cycle of Philodryas patagoniensis in south Brazil was described through morpho‐anatomical and histological analysis of individuals deposited in zoological collections. Spermatogenesis occurred during late autumn–winter (June–September) and spermiogenesis occurred in spring–summer (October–March). The volume of the testes was smaller (quiescent) in winter, while the tubular diameter and the epithelial height of the seminiferous tubule were larger in summer (January–March). The ductus deferens presented spermatozoa all over the year and had no seasonal variation in diameter. The length of the kidney was larger in winter–spring (July–December), although the tubular diameter and epithelium height of the sexual segment of the kidney (SSK) were larger only in winter (July–September). Total testicular regression was observed in late autumn (May), simultaneously with the peak in SSK. Therefore, at the individual level, males exhibit a discontinuous cyclical reproduction. Considering the population level, the reproductive cycle is seasonal semisynchronous, with most of the individuals showing a reproductive peak in spring–summer (October–March). Here, we present evidence to support the importance of the microscopic approach to reproductive cycle studies. Finally, we discuss the intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing P. patagoniensis reproductive patterns. 相似文献

Among reptiles, an ampulla ductus deferentis has been reported only in Squamata. Fairly detailed studies are available only for two species, the lizard Calotes versicolor (Fam: Agamidae) and the snake Seminatrix pygaea (Fam: Colubridae). The light microscopic study on C. versicolor revealed the ampulla to be a prominent organ, whereas the light and transmission electron microscopic study in S. pygaea revealed it to be discernable only in histological preparations. Further, the epithelium of the ductal portion of vas deferens as well as the ampulla of C. versicolor appears to contribute to the seminal plasma and can also phagocytose dead sperm, whereas in S. pygaea neither of these roles has been established. Thus, we hypothesize that there may be variations in the anatomy, histology, and the role of the vas deferens in general, and the ampulla in particular, of the squamate reptiles. In this study, the ductus deferens of the small fan-throated lizard Sitana ponticeriana (Fam: Agamidae) was subjected to light and transmission electron microscopic analysis. In this lizard the ampulla is more prominent than in C. versicolor. The epithelium of the ductal portion of vas deferens consists of principal cells (with features reflecting roles in endocytosis and phagocytosis of dead sperm), dark cells (which are absent in the epithelium of the ductal portion of vas deferens of snakes), and basal cells. The ampulla of S. ponticeriana is differentiated into storage and glandular portions. The epithelium of the storage portion is like that in the ductal portion of the vas deferens, whereas that of the glandular portion, consisting of dark and light principal cells and foamy cells, is tall and forms into smooth villous folds. All three cell types show evidence for a role in secretion, in all likelihood different from each other, for release into the lumen to contribute to seminal plasma. These cells do not provide evidence of a role in phagocytosis of dead sperm. It appears that within the Squamata, the ductal ampulla differs in structure as well as function. We suggest that the ductal ampulla of agamid lizards is a composite gland of the ampulla ductus deferentis and seminal vesicles of mammals. 相似文献

The kidneys of the Mediterranean Gecko, Hemidactylus turcicus (Gekkonidae), were investigated using light and electron microscopy with the primary focus placed on morphology of the sexual segment of the kidney. The nephrons of male H. turcicus are composed of five distinct regions: 1) a renal corpuscle and glomerulus, 2) a proximal convoluted tubule, 3) an intermediate segment, 4) a distal convoluted tubule, and 5) the sexual segment of the kidney/collecting duct. Female H. turcicus is similar but lack a sexual segment of the kidney. The sexual segment of the kidney is hypertrophied during the months of March through August, which corroborates previous reports of reproductive activity. During inactive months, the sexual segment of the kidney is nondiscernable from the collecting ducts. The sexual segment consists of tall columnar epithelial cells with basally positioned nuclei. Perinuclear Golgi complexes and rough endoplasmic reticulum are present. Secretory granules, which fill the apices of the epithelial cells, are electron dense and released into the lumen by a merocrine secretory process. Narrow intercellular canaliculi separate each epithelial cell and are sealed by tight junctions at the luminal aspect. Basally, leukoctyes are observed within the intercellular canaliculi and outside the basal lamina. Mast cells can be found just outside the basal lamina in close association with renal capillaries. The sexual segment of the kidney of H. turcicus is similar to that of three unrelated lizards for which ultrastructure was investigated with secretion mode being the major difference Also, H. turcicus is similar to most other lizards in that complete regression occurs during reproductive inactivity, but differs in this trait from the skink, Scincella lateralis, and most snakes which display a hypertrophied sexual segment of the kidney throughout the entire year. Although some unique similarities appear during the optimization, no direct patterns or directions are observed, and only the molecular based phylogeny resolves the ancestral condition of the Squamata as the sexual segment of the kidney being observed in the distal convoluted tubule, collecting duct, and ureter. We studied the male reproductive cycle in a population of Ophisops elegans from Mount Sannine, Lebanon, by histological analysis. Testicular histology showed active spermatogenesis in spring, followed by a testicular regression at the end of summer and a subsequent recrudescence in autumn. Monthly variations in the epididymis, the ductus deferens and the sexual segment of the kidney were in synchrony with the testicular cycle. They were hypertrophied as spermatogenetic activity increased and atrophied as spermatogenetic activity decreased. Males of O. elegans showed a vernal type of spermatogenesis with a close relationship between the evolution of the seminiferous tubules and the secondary sexual characters. 相似文献

We characterized nine polymorphic microsatellite (six trinucleotides and three tetranucleotides) loci for the slatey-grey snake (Stegonotus cucullatus) from Australia, in order to study the mating system of this species. Based on a total of 100 samples, the number of alleles per locus ranged from three to 10, and the observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.62 to 0.86 and from 0.53 to 0.83, respectively. 相似文献

Mating with more than one male often provides direct or indirect benefits to female fitness but can also increase the chance of injury and death. Costs of mating are expected to increase linearly with increasing mating number. But how such costs interact with benefits to determine the net payoff of mating multiply is not well understood. Using the highly cannibalistic Springbok mantis, Miomantis caffra, a species where females are stabbed in the abdomen by males during violent premating struggles that males initiate to avoid being cannibalized, we took an experimental approach to assess the economics of polyandry under the risk of external, male-inflicted injury. We predicted that females that mate multiply would be more likely to show abdominal injuries, have higher prereproductive mortality, produce fewer offspring and be more likely to engage in pre-mating cannibalism to avoid unwanted matings. In line with our predictions, we found that the likelihood of abdominal injury was highest among females that mated at least once, and prereproductive death was highest among females that mated twice or three times. Virgin females completely avoided these costs and produced some offspring parthenogenetically but not enough to provide a net benefit. Although mating was better than not mating, there was no singularly optimal mating number: females that mated once and three times produced similarly high numbers of offspring from the first ootheca, which resulted in an intermediate trough in offspring production at two matings. We also found little evidence that cannibalism was deployed as a mate-avoidance strategy: females consistently attacked and consumed males regardless of how many times they mated or how long they were housed with males. Our results suggest the possibility of two distinct mating strategies in M. caffra, where females either mate at a lower frequency to minimize costs or at a higher frequency to maximize benefits. We discuss possible explanations for this bimodal pattern in offspring production. 相似文献

Variation in lekking duration of males of a Hawaiian Drosophila, D. grimshawi, was examined in laboratory enclosures. The relationship between variation in male lekking activity and number of eggs laid by females, proportion of eggs hatching, and total offspring production was investigated. Females mating highly active males laid fewer eggs and thus had lower offspring production than females mating less active males, even though other studies have shown that D. grimshawi females prefer more active males as mates. These results are discussed in terms of conflict between males and females over mating benefits and in trade-offs faced by males between lekking duration and offspring production per mating. Testis mass was not related to lekking activity levels, but males with heavier testes produced more offspring per mating, suggesting that males may vary in other ways that correlate with possible direct fitness gains for females. 相似文献

The present lectin histochemical comparison of cauda epididymal and ampullary bovine sperm was conducted to investigate whether ampullary secretions are involved in altering the plasma-membrane glycoconjugates of sperm. A marked redistribution of glycoconjugates between sperm from these two regions was indeed revealed on the basis of changes in binding patterns of the following fluoroscein-isothiocyanate (FITC)-labelled lectins: wheat-germ agglutinin (WGA), Maclura pomifera agglutinin (MPA), Griffonia simplicifolia I agglutinin (GS I) and Bauhinea purpurea agglutinin (BPA). This was evidenced in the first three cases by a relative reversal of staining intensity between the acrosomal and post-acrosomal regions, and by a pronounced increase in the staining of the midpiece. Changes in the distribution of BPA binding sites were limited to the latter phenomenon. The results are compared with previous findings, discussed in the context of the hypermotility characteristic of ampullary sperm and related to previously reported differences in the lectin-binding patterns of the luminal and glandular epithelia. 相似文献

Hymenaea stigonocarpa is a neotropical tree that is economically important due to its high‐quality wood; however, because it has been exploited extensively, it is currently considered threatened. Microsatellite loci were used to investigate the pollen and seed dispersal, mating patterns, spatial genetic structure (SGS), genetic diversity, and inbreeding depression in H. stigonocarpa adults, juveniles, and open‐pollinated seeds, which were sampled from isolated trees in a pasture and trees within a forest fragment in the Brazilian savannah. We found that the species presented a mixed mating system, with population and individual variations in the outcrossing rate (0.53–1.0). The studied populations were not genetically isolated due to pollen and seed flow between the studied populations and between the populations and individuals located outside of the study area. Pollen and seed dispersal occurred over long distances (>8 km); however, the dispersal patterns were isolated by distance, with a high frequency of mating occurring between near‐neighbor trees and seeds dispersed near the parent trees. The correlated mating for individual seed trees was higher within than among fruits, indicating that fruits present a high proportion of full‐sibs. Genetic diversity and SGS were similar among the populations, but offspring showed evidence of inbreeding, mainly originating from mating among related trees, which suggests inbreeding depression between the seed and adult stages. Selfing resulted in a higher inbreeding depression than mating among relatives, as assessed through survival and height. As the populations are not genetically isolated, both are important targets for in situ conservation to maintain their genetic diversity; for ex situ conservation, seeds can be collected from at least 78 trees in both populations separated by at least 250 m. 相似文献

Mating rate optima often differ between the sexes: males may increase their fitness by multiple mating, but for females multiple mating confers little benefit and can often be costly (especially in taxa without nuptial gifts or mala parental care). Sexually antagonistic evolution is thus expected in traits related to mating rates under sexual selection. This prediction has been tested by multiple studies that applied experimental evolution technique, which is a powerful tool to directly examine the evolutionary consequences of selection. Yet, the results so far only partly support the prediction. Here, we provide another example of experimental evolution of sexual selection, by applying it for the first time to the mating behaviour of a seed beetle Callsorobruchus chinensis. We found a lower remating rate in polygamy-line females than in monogamy-line (i.e. no sexual selection) females after 21 generations of selection. Polygamy-line females also showed a longer duration of first mating than monogamy-line females. We found no effect of male evolutionary lines on the remating rate or first mating duration. Though not consistent with the original prediction, the current and previous studies collectively suggest that the observed female-limited responses may be a norm, which is also consistent with the conceptual advances in the last two decades of the advantages and limitations of experimental evolution technique. 相似文献

Understanding why females mate multiply is a major issue in evolutionary ecology. We investigated the consequences of an asynchronous arrival pattern on male competition and multiple paternity in the apparently monoandrous agile frog ( Rana dalmatina ). The largest frogs arrived first and both males and females lost weight significantly during the spawning period. Asynchronous arrival at breeding sites resulted in a male-biased operational sex ratio (OSR). The OSR was more strongly male-biased at the beginning and at the end of the breeding period when the number of satellite males increased. All females mated only once, but multiple paternity within clutches occurred at the beginning and the end of the breeding period. The influence of asynchronous arrival and biased sex ratio suggests that reduced variance or bet-hedging promoting female fitness had only a reduced role in the evolution of polyandry, and polyandry is likely to be associated with male benefits. Polyandry in frogs can be explained either by forced mating as a result of sexual conflict or by clutch piracy. Sulphoxidation occurs in protamines that are enriched in cysteine and supplies chromatin for packaging. The extracellular fluid contains higher levels of oxidised cysteine (cystine), and some cells utilise system xc?, a cystine transporter in which xCT is the main protein component, to fulfil the need for cysteine. We hypothesised that system xc? might ensure the supply of cysteine needed for spermatogenesis. The reproductive ability of xCT?/? male mice at 6- to 18-weeks of age appeared to be lower than xCT+/+ male mice. The courtship behaviour of the xCT?/? male mice was undynamic, which appeared to be associated with the low reproductive ability of xCT?/? male mice. xCT was found to be expressed in mouse testes, notably in Sertoli cells, as well as in the epididymis and the levels were increased at the time of sexual maturation. Despite the normal histological appearance of testicular tissues, the cauda epididymis of xCT?/? mice contained round, greater numbers of immature spermatogenic cells than that of xCT+/+ mice. However, there were no significant differences in the numbers of sperm stored in the cauda epididymis or in the concentrations of cysteine or glutathione in the testes. The resulting sperm had normal fertilising ability. Thus, system xc? appears to function as a backup system for supplying cysteine to testes and play a pivotal role in supplying cysteine for normal sexual behaviour by a mechanism that is different from that for the supply of cysteine in spermatogenesis. 相似文献

The seminal fluid proteins (SFPs) transferred to mating partners along with sperm often play crucial roles in mediating post‐mating sexual selection. One way in which sperm donors can maximize their own reproductive success is by modifying the partner's (sperm recipient's) post‐copulatory behaviour to prevent or delay re‐mating, thereby decreasing the likelihood or intensity of sperm competition. Here, we adopted a quantitative genetic approach combining gene expression and behavioural data to identify candidates that could mediate such a response in the simultaneously hermaphroditic flatworm Macrostomum lignano. We identified two putative SFPs—Mlig‐pro46 and Mlig‐pro63—linked to both mating frequency and ‘suck’ frequency, a distinctive behaviour, in which, upon ejaculate receipt, the worm places its pharynx over its female genital opening and apparently attempts to remove the received ejaculate. We, therefore, performed a manipulative experiment using RNA interference‐induced knockdown to ask how the loss of Mlig‐pro46 and Mlig‐pro63 expression, singly and in combination, affects mating frequency, partner suck propensity and sperm competitive ability. None of the knockdown treatments impacted strongly on the mating frequency or sperm competitive ability, but knockdown of Mlig‐pro63 resulted in a significantly decreased suck propensity of mating partners. This suggests that Mlig‐pro63 may normally act as a cue in the ejaculate to trigger recipient suck behaviour and—given that other proteins in the ejaculate have the opposite effect—could be one component of an ongoing arms race between donors and recipients over the control of ejaculate fate. However, the adaptive significance of Mlig‐pro46 and Mlig‐pro63 from a donor perspective remains enigmatic. 相似文献

Competition between males creates potential for pre‐ and postcopulatory sexual selection and conflict. Theory predicts that males facing risk of sperm competition should evolve traits to secure their reproductive success. If those traits are costly to females, the evolution of such traits may also increase conflict between the sexes. Conversely, under the absence of sperm competition, one expectation is for selection on male competitive traits to relax thereby also relaxing sexual conflict. Experimental evolution studies are a powerful tool to test this expectation. Studies in multiple insect species have yielded mixed and partially conflicting results. In this study, we evaluated male competitive traits and male effects on female costs of mating in Drosophila melanogaster after replicate lines evolved for more than 50 generations either under enforced monogamy or sustained polygamy, thus manipulating the extent of intrasexual competition between males. We found that in a setting where males competed directly with a rival male for access to a female and fertilization of her ova polygamous males had superior reproductive success compared to monogamous males. When comparing reproductive success solely in double mating standard sperm competition assays, however, we found no difference in male sperm defense competitiveness between the different selection regimes. Instead, we found monogamous males to be inferior in precopulatory competition, which indicates that in our system, enforced monogamy relaxed selection on traits important in precopulatory rather than postcopulatory competition. We discuss our findings in the context of findings from previous experimental evolution studies in Drosophila ssp. and other invertebrate species. 相似文献

Sexual isolation between Groups A and B of Closterium ehrenbergii, two closely related species, was studied by a multiple-choice mating method, as well as the nochoice mating method which has been used in previous work on microalgae. Time lapse photomicrographs and the difference in cell shape and size between the two mating groups allowed identification of a given cell in the mixture as either Group A or B, even when certain morphological changes occurred during the several day culture required for sexual induction. When plus and minus mating types of Group A were mixed with those of Group B (multiplechoice mating), no intergroup hybrid zygospores were formed. However, many intragroup zygospores of either Group A or B were formed. When one plus strain of Group A was mixed with one minus strain of Group B or when one plus strain of Group B was mixed with one minus strain of Group A (no-choice mating), intergroup sexual interactions took place resulting in a small number of hybrid zygospores; however, the process took much longer than intragroup sexual interactions. It was also shown that cell size difference itself hardly affects sexual interactions between haploid and autodiploid strains of Group A. It is suggested that sexual isolation between Groups A and B would be complete in nature, although they may interact sexually in the laboratory. 相似文献

Two independent components of mating behaviour, sexual selection and assortative mating, were studied in two allopatric morphs, one sheltered boulder shore form (S-morph) and one exposed cliff shore form (E-morph), of Littorina saxatilis from the west coast of Sweden. Sexual selection was studied by comparing the sizes of copulating and non-copulating snails in the field. Size assortative mating was studied by collecting copulating pairs in the field, while assortative mating between morphs was investigated by bringing the pure morphs together in intermediary habitats and then noting the matings. The S-morph mated randomly in relation to size in two of the studied populations and exhibited a trend towards size assortative mating in a third, while the E-morph showed size assortative mating in both studied populations. The microdistribution of sizes of snails on the shores could not explain all the size assortative mating found, and instead it is argued that a size-based mate rejection behaviour also contributes to the assortative mating in at least some of these populations. There was sexual selection on size in both males and females in the S-morph, with large individuals being favoured as mates. In contrast, copulating snails of the E-morph were smaller than non-copulating ones. The significantly different sexual selection intensities between the two morphs may help to explain the size differences between them. There was random mating between the E- and the S-morphs of L. saxatilis, which suggests no incipient reproductive isolation between morphs on Swedish rocky shores. Mating plugs occluding the female gonopore after mating are a widespread phenomenon. In scorpions, two main types of mating plugs are found: sclerotized mating plugs being parts of the spermatophore that break off during mating, and gel‐like mating plugs being gelatinous fluids that harden in the female genital tract. In this study, the gel‐like mating plug of Euscorpius italicus was investigated with respect to its composition, fine structure, and changes over time. Sperm forms the major component of the mating plug, a phenomenon previously unknown in arachnids. Three parts of the mating plug can be distinguished. The part facing the outside of the female (outer part) contains sperm packages containing inactive spermatozoa. In this state, sperm is transferred. In the median part, the sperm packages get uncoiled to single spermatozoa. In the inner part, free sperm is embedded in a large amount of secretions. Fresh mating plugs are soft gelatinous, later they harden from outside toward inside. This process is completed after 3‐5 days. Sperm from artificially triggered spermatophores could be activated by immersion in insect Ringer's solution indicating that the fluid condition in the females' genital tract or females' secretions causes sperm activation. Because of the male origin of the mating plug, it has likely evolved under sperm competition or sexual conflict. As females refused to remate irrespective of the presence or absence of a mating plug, females may have changed their mating behavior in the course of evolution from polyandry to monandry. J. A new species of Astyanax from the Rio Paraguaçu basin, Bahia, Brazil, is described. This new species is distinguished from its congeners known to occur in Brazilian drainages by the presence of small bony hooks on all fins of mature males. Furthermore, the new species can be diagnosed by its colour pattern, which consists of a unique vertically elongated humeral blotch, a conspicuous dark drop‐shaped horizontal blotch over the caudal peduncle, tapering anteriorly and not extending to the median caudal‐fin rays, and by the absence of a conspicuous broad dark midlateral stripe. The new species differs further by having the greatest body depth just anterior to the dorsal‐fin origin, 32–35 perforated scales in the lateral line and a reduced number of branched anal‐fin rays (16–20). Apparently, the new species does not fit into any species complex of Astyanax. The occurrence of bony hooks on all fins of Astyanax is discussed. 相似文献

Incipient sexual isolation between genotypes, lines, or populations of the same species is commonly measured in Drosophila by choice tests. Results of these tests are known to be influenced, in an undetermined manner, by the mating propensity of competitors and by discriminatory factors during courtship. We have approached the problem by measuring male and female propensities in separate, independent tests, and by examining whether these estimates could explain the results of the choice tests. First, male and female choice tests were used to measure sexual isolation between populations of Drosophila melanogaster and between populations of D. simulans. Significant deviations from random mating occurred in 31 out of 48 tests, in agreement with the propensity values of the tested genotypes. We conclude that mating propensity instead of discrimination is directly involved in the estimation of sexual isolation in our populations, and advise against the application of male and female choice tests to assess intraspecific isolation without a proper knowledge of the mating propensities of competing individuals. Second, multiple choice tests were used to assess isolation between D. melanogaster populations. In examining the dynamics of matings throughout the test, we show that if competing individuals differ in mating propensities and tests are long enough to allow most matings to happen, a spurious sexual isolation can appear. We recommend that multiple choice tests be terminated once 50 percent of matings had been observed. 相似文献

The gross morphology of the brain of Rineloricaria heteroptera and its relation to the sensory/behavioural ecology of the species is described and discussed. The sexual and ontogenetic intraspecific variation in the whole brain length and mass, as well as within/between the eight different brain subdivisions volumes, is also examined and discussed. Negative allometry for the whole brain length/mass and relative growth of the telencephalon and optic tecta was observed. Positive allometry was observed for the relative growth of the olfactory bulbs and medulla oblongata . Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses did not reveal significant differences in the brain subdivision growth rates among sexes and/or developmental stages, except for the optic tectum and some portions of the medulla oblongata , with juveniles and males showing more developed optic tecta and medullary subdivisions, respectively. The growth rates for each brain subdivision were relatively constant, and the slopes of the growth equations were almost parallel, except for those of the olfactory bulbs and medulla oblongata subdivisions, suggesting some degree of tachyauxesis of subdivisions against the entire brain. The corpus cerebelli was the more voluminous brain subdivision in most specimens (principally adults), followed by the optic tectum (the more voluminous subdivision in juveniles), hypothalamus, and telencephalon, in that order. Differences in the number of lamellae and relative size of the olfactory organ were also detected among developmental stages, which were more numerous and larger in adults. Based on these results, it is possible to infer an ontogenetic shift in the habitat/resource use and behaviour of R. heteroptera . Vision, primarily routed through the optic tectum, could be fundamental in early stages, whereas in adults, olfaction and taste, primarily routed through the olfactory bulbs and medulla oblongata , play more important roles. 相似文献
