A field research was carried out in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan in order to establish the role of the water-scorpion, Laccotrephes japonensis Scott as predator of nymphs of the endangered giant water bug, Kirkaldyia (= Lethocerus) deyrolli. To assess the impact of this predator, a field experiment was set up with (Control) and without L. japonensis (Removed). The survival rate of K. deyrolli in Removed treatment was higher than in the Control. Our experimental results showed that L. japonensis is an important predator for K. deyrolli nymphs in the field. The food habits of the endangered giant water bug, Lethocerus deyrolli, were studied in the rice fields of Nose, in the north of Osaka Prefecture, Japan. Field observations revealed that frogs were the most important prey item. Frogs represented 86.4% and 78.6% in the diet of L. deyrolli in spring and summer, respectively. Among seven species of three families (Hylidae, Rhacophoridae, and Ranidae) exploited by L. deyrolli, the most important food item was adult Hyla japonica in spring and juvenile Rana nigromaculta in summer. Fish and aquatic arthropods were not considered important foods for L. deyrolli. The frog‐dependent food habits indicate that the recovery and conservation of frogs should be prioritized to protect L. deyrolli from extinction.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to analyze the morphology and COI sequences of giant water bugs (Belostomatidae: Lethocerinae) that inhabit the Palearctic, Oriental, and Australian regions (i.e., three Lethocerus and a single Kirkaldyia species). Analysis revealed that both L. patruelis and L. indicus share two light stripes on the pronotum, but L. patruelis possesses narrower stripes and L. insulanus possesses an additional longitudinal narrow dark median band, whereas K. deyrolli was characterized by not having such markings. With regards to genetic analysis, the average intraspecific genetic distances of L. patruelis and L. indicus (from Palearctic and Oriental regions are 0.3 and 0.8%, respectively), but K. deyrolli which was collected from Northeast Asia, showed much higher intraspecific genetic distance (3.7%). The genetic distance between Kirkaldyia and Lethocerus (16.4–16.8%) is similar to that found between the genera of other hemipteran taxa. This study also newly reported the extended easternmost distribution of L. patruelis up to Surat Thani Province in southern Thailand. Along with K. deyrolli, which is considered threatened in South Korea and Japan, Lethocerus species have been facing threats in Southeast Asia, where they are heavily harvested and commonly sold in local markets as food. Therefore, future conservation efforts should be directed toward Lethocerus species in tropical Southeast Asia, especially the rarely found L. patruelis.  相似文献

This paper suggests that the nymphs of a specialist predator, Kirkaldyia (=Lethocerus) deyrolli (Belostomatidae: Heteroptera), are indirectly affected by their tadpoles’ prey. K. deyrolli nymphs and the predator Laccotrephes japonensis (Nepidae: Heteroptera) adults coexist in rice paddy fields. It was predicted that the difference in tadpole density may influence the K. deyrolli nymph survival rate. We first compared survival rates of the first instar nymphs of K. deyrolli in June (high tadpole density period) and July (low tadpole density period). Secondly, we investigated the survival rate of K. deyrolli nymphs at different tadpole densities and under the presence or absence of L. japonensis adults to examine whether higher tadpole density moderates predation pressure from L. japonensis adults to K. deyrolli nymphs, e.g., density-mediated indirect effects. As a result of the comparison, the survival rate of K. deyrolli nymphs in June was higher than that in July. For the field experiment, the slopes between the survival rate of K. deyrolli nymphs and tadpole density were positive under both predator presence and absence. However, the slope under the presence of a predator was steeper than that under absence of the predator (“predator-by-tadpole density interaction” was significant). These results suggest that a higher tadpole density in June provides an abundant food resource for K. deyrolli nymphs and also moderates predation pressure from L. japonensis.  相似文献

Rice fields provide major habitats for lentic aquatic insects including the giant water bug Kirkaldyia (=Lethocerus) deyrolli (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae) in Japan. Previous researchers have emphasized that conserving populations of the frogs, Hyla japonicus and Rana nigromaculata, is very important for preserving K. deyrolli because these frogs were found to be a major component of the diet of K. deyrolli adults. However, these previous studies were carried out in rice fields with no loaches, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, which were probably been inhabited by loaches in the past. A series of field surveys and laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the dietary preference of K. deyrolli adults for loaches, frogs, and aquatic insects; the reproductive effects of consuming these foods; and their protein content. In the rice fields, K. deyrolli adults ate loaches when they were available. When the three prey species (frog: R. nigromaculata, loach: M. anguillicaudatus, and dragonfly: Orthetrum albistylum speciosum) were supplied in laboratory conditions, K. deyrolli adults ate more loaches than frogs or dragonflies. In addition, K. deyrolli adults provided with loaches or frogs laid more egg masses within the limited breeding season than when provided with dragonflies. The edible parts of the loach bodies were the largest of the three prey types. It is possible that K. deyrolli adults have been forced to eat frogs due to reductions in the population density of loaches because modern rice cultivation obstructs loach migration routes and reduces their spawning grounds.  相似文献

When giant water bugs (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae) encounter prey animals that are larger than they are themselves, they first hook the claw of their raptorial legs onto the animal, and then use all their legs to pin it. The claws of the raptorial legs in giant water bugs play an important role in catching larger prey, but the relationship between the claws, body lengths of predators, and prey size has not been fully investigated. To elucidate the functioning of claws in catching prey, we investigated prey body size relative to predator size in nymphs of two sympatric belostomatid giant water bug species, the vertebrate eater Kirkaldyia (=Lethocerus) deyrolli Vuillefroy and the invertebrate eater Appasus japonicus Vuillefroy, captured in rice fields. The younger nymphs of K. deyrolli caught preys that were larger than themselves, whereas those of A. japonicus caught preys that were smaller. Younger nymphs of K. deyrolli had claws that were curved more sharply than those of A. japonicus. The more curved claws of younger nymphs of K. deyrolli probably hook more easily onto larger vertebrates and thus this shape represents an adaptation for acquiring such prey.  相似文献

Some species of predatory aquatic bugs (Nepoidea, including Belostomatidae and Nepidae) are designated as threatened-vulnerable species in the Red Data Book of Japan and are regarded as effective predators of freshwater snails and mosquito larvae. To reveal the feeding habits of Nepoidea, we investigated their dietary items in wetlands and obtained data from the published literature. Lethocerus deyrolli (Vuillefroy) preys mainly upon frogs, and the major diet of the nymphs is tadpoles. Laccotrephes japonensis (Scott) adults prey mainly upon tadpoles. Lethocerus deyrolli nymphs and L. japonensis adults compete against each other as same-guild members because they are sympatric in wetlands. Both nymphs and adults of Appasus japonicus (Vuillefroy) feed on snails, and L. japonensis nymphs feed on aquatic insects, including mosquito larvae (39.3% of aquatic insects). These species are effective predators of medically important pests such as snails, and mosquito larvae.  相似文献

Summary Using a tethered flight technique, migration was studied in the African cotton stainer bugs Dysdercus fasciatus Sign., D. nigrofasciatus Stål, and D. superstitiosus (F.) (Heteroptera: Pyrrhocoridae). The flight system of males of all three species matures in 4–6 days post-eclosion, and flight can continue throughout life. Fed females of D. fasciatus do not fly, but rather histolyse the flight muscles and develop oocytes. Fed females of D. nigrofasciatus and D. superstitiosus exhibit some flight at 4 days post-eclosion, but flight is essentially absent at 6 days when flight muscle histolysis and oögenesis are in progress. Starved females of all three species undertake considerable flight and do not histolyse the flight muscles or develop oöcytes. In starved pairs coupling frequency is lowered permitting increased migration. The three species are thus facultative migrants using starvation as a releasing cue. D. fasciatus feeds on baobab (Adansonia) fruits which are seasonally abundant and is the most opportunistic species with the highest reproductive potential and no flight in the presence of food. D. nigrofasciatus feeds on a variety of herbaceous annuals and perennials; it follows an intermediate migration and reproductive strategy. Finally D. superstitiosus is the most catholic in its food habits and has the lowest reproductive potential. Both of the latter species retain some flight capacity even when fed, presumably so that individuals can locate suitable host plants.  相似文献

Three species of bugs (Order: Hemiptera) belonging to different suborders and different families were investigated with respect to flight-related metabolism, and the neuropeptide hormones that regulate metabolism in Encosternum delegorguei, Locris arithmetica and Nezara viridula were characterised. The concentration of two potential metabolic fuels in the haemolymph of these bugs (at rest) revealed that lipids were more abundant than carbohydrates and that lipids increased significantly when the bugs performed extensive exercise (flight) and in the resting period following the aerobic activity. Carbohydrate levels declined during flight but recovered to the pre-flight level during a 1 h resting period post-flight. Further experiments with N. viridula revealed greater lipid accumulation in the haemolymph after a 10 min flight than after a 2 min flight and significant activation of glycogen phosphorylase was recorded in the fat body immediately after flight activity. Crude extracts of corpora cardiaca (CC) from L. arithmetica and E. delegorguei were both active in mobilising carbohydrates in the cockroach Periplaneta americana. In conspecific assays, only L. arithmetica CC extract had a significant hypertrehalosaemic effect, while CC extracts from both E. delegorguei and L. arithmetica were hyperlipaemic. By a combination of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry two octapeptides known as Peram-CAH-I and Pyrap-AKH were identified from the spittle bug, L. arithmetica, and two octapeptides known as Panbo-RPCH and Schgr-AKH-II were identified from the edible inflated stink bug, E. delegorguei. Injection of Panbo-RPCH into E. delegorguei and into the green stink bug, N. viridula had no effect on circulating carbohydrates, although glycogen phosphorylase was activated in the fat body. The circulating lipid concentration in N. viridula did not change significantly under artificially induced hypertrehalosaemia, suggesting that lipids were not being used or mobilised.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to analyze the effects of food supply and photoperiod on the induction of dormancy inLeptocorisa oratorius Fabricius (Heteroptera: Alydidae) adults in Alor Setar (latitude 6.1o N), West Malaysia. When the adults were deprived of food, they ceased oviposition, became tolerant to starvation, and their oxygen consumption rate decreased, but they did not accumulate lipid. Their oxygen consumption rate again increased when they were allowed to resume feeding. Therefore, food limitation induced quiescence in the adult. On the other hand, diapause was induced by short daylength (critical photoperiod was 12L:12D), leading to immature ovaries, hypertrophied fat bodies, lipid accumulation and low oxygen consumption rate even when food was available. However, in the study area most of the bugs probably did not enter diapause at any time of the year, because the shortest outdoor daylength including civil twilight was longer than the critical daylength for diapause induction.  相似文献

A two-year sampling study (1992–93) in a flat storage of shelled corn showed that the larger pirate bugLyctocoris campestris (F.) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae), can be detected by relative sampling techniques as early as the second week of May. The perceived seasonal pattern ofL. campestris varied with trapping method. Of the three relative sampling methods used, probe traps consistently captured more bugs of both sexes than cardboard traps in the grain and sticky flight traps. Probe traps showed a third degree polynomial trend through the season. On the other hand, flight traps were effective for monitoringL. campestris population during early and mid-summer when temperatures were high, but the effectiveness declined during late summer and early fall. Cardboard traps showed the opposite trend to those of flight traps, with increasingL. campestris abundance during the fall when bugs sought refuge as temperature decreased. Sampling date and environmental factors, including grain moisture content, air and grain temperatures were correlated with trap capture. Earlier work reported thatL. campestris showed a highly female biased sex ratio in the field as opposed to a 1∶1 sex ratio in laboratory colonies. The present study found that the estimate of sex ratios in the field can differ with trapping methods. Of the three relative sampling methods used, flight and cardboard traps, in most cases, showed no deviation from a 1∶1, sex ratio. Probe traps, however, indicated a highly female biased sex ratio in field populations. Absolute sampling using a 1140 ml cup sampler also showed no deviation from a 1∶1 sex ratio in the field population. The data suggested that relative sampling methods may be inappropriate for sex ratio estimation in the field. Thus, an absolute sampling method is required for determination of the true field sex ratio ofL. campestris. Analyses of dispersion patterns showed that both males and females ofL. campestris exhibit an aggregated spatial distribution in the grain. This article reports the results of research only. Laboratory experiments were carried out to evaluate the efficiency of two insecticides, cypermethrin and oxydemeton-methyl, in controlling the nymphs and adults of Lygus bugs and the resulting damage caused by these bugs to small pine seedlings. Both insecticides significantly increased the mortality of bugs on the seedlings compared with bug mortality on untreated controls. Mortality of bugs was higher in the oxydemeton-methyl treatment than in the cypermethrin treatment. The occurrence of seedlings with multiple leaders and the number of leader shoots per seedling were significantly decreased in insecticide-treated seedlings. Mean number of leader shoots was significantly higher in seedlings treated with oxydemeton-methyl than in seedlings treated with cypermethrin after a 24-h exposure to nymphal instars of Lygus. The mortality of the pine seedlings was very low but significantly decreased in insecticidal treatments. Factors affecting the effects of different insecticides on bug mortality and their efficiency in controlling the multiple-leadering phenomenon are discussed.  相似文献

For insect parasitoids, knowledge of their flight capability is essential for a general understanding of the relationship with their hosts. For instance, flight capacity might partly determine their efficacy as biological control agents. Ibalia leucospoides Hochenwarch (Hymenoptera: Ibaliidae) is a solitary, pro-ovigenic parasitoid of the woodwasp, Sirex noctilio Boidin (Hymenoptera, Siricidae), an economically important pest of softwood forestation. This study explores the flight capacities of I. leucospoides females and assesses the effects of a sugar-rich food supply and crowding on female flight performance, by using computer-linked flight mills. The present study shows: (1) a high variability in flight potential of I. leucospoides females, (2) no effects of food supply and grouping on wasp flight (flight distance and speed), (3) a significant effect of body size and wing loading on flight performance and, (4) a significant body mass loss during the flight dependent on the total distance flown. The lack of effect of food on a highly energy-demanding activity as flight may be related to the life-history traits and nutritional strategies of this parasitoid. The relevance of these observations for the use of I. leucospoides as a biological control agent is discussed.  相似文献

Producers in the southeastern USA face significant crop losses from the stink bugs Nezara viridula (L.), Euschistus servus (Say), and Chinavia hilaris (Say) (all Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). Cotton, peanut, and soybean are major agronomic crops and host plants of stink bugs in the region. We conducted a field plot study to measure the relative longevity of adult, unmated N. viridula males and females caged on peanut, cotton, and soybean to test three hypotheses: (1) differences in mortality are associated with differences in host plant food suitability, (2) mortality rates increase with age, and (3) males have higher mortality than females. Using survival analysis, we found that the sex of the individual did not affect survival rates on any of the three host plants. Survival was significantly higher in cotton and soybean than in peanut. Mortality rates increased with age in peanut, but not in soybean or cotton. The frequency of canopy temperatures above 35 °C was higher in peanut than in soybean. Peanut appears to be a less than ideal habitat in terms of canopy temperature and/or food quality for N. viridula adults. Both, cotton and soybean were equally suitable food resources for Nviridula adults prior to maturation of the plants.  相似文献

The common nettle (Urtica dioica L.) is a perennial and cosmopolitan plant species and is known to be the source of food for a great diversity of insects. To understand the importance of the nettle in agro-ecosystems, a field experiment was carried out in an experimental farm at Gembloux (Belgium) to study the effect of nettle margin strips on aphid and aphidophagous populations in close field crops, namely wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), green pea (Pisum sativum L.) and rape (Brassicae napus L.). The aphids and related beneficial populations were weekly assessed, from March to August 2005, by visual observations in two plots per field crop. A higher abundance of aphidophagous beneficials was collected in nettle strips when compared to the field crops. Particularly, the presence of predatory anthocorids, mirids and green lacewings was observed on nettle only. Nevertheless, the most abundant aphid predatory family, the Coccinellidae, was distributed in both environments, in nettle strips and in crop fields. The field margin supported a significantly higher density ofHarmonia axyridis than the field crops. In contrast, the field crops, green pea particularly, supported a higher density of Coccinella septempunctata. The distribution of the aphidophagous species, mainly the ladybirds, was discussed in relation to the host plant and related aphid species and their potential effect on integrated pest management.  相似文献

We collected data during a 10-month study carried out on the mongoose lemur, Eulemur mongoz, at Anjamena in northwestern Madagascar, which provide baseline information on seasonal variation in the ecology, home range use and some aspects of the behavior of two neighboring groups. We monitored group size of nine groups in the study area and assessed them for seasonal variation. We present additional information collected during short-term surveys in other areas before and during the study for comparison. The study groups were small family units, and changes in group size were limited to births and emigrations of sexually mature progeny. In spite of clear seasonal changes in climate and vegetation, there is no variation in grouping patterns, so it is not possible to correlate variation in group size with seasonal variation of ecological variables. Comparison with ecological data from other field studies on lemurids reveals differences in food resource distribution in western forests versus other types of Malagasy forest. This distribution of food resources may predict home range size in mixed frugivorous–folivorous lemurs. Small home ranges, mainly in the West, could be correlated with a uniform distribution of food resources. Finally, we suggest that the dry season in the West may not present frugivorous–folivorous lemurs with major problems in finding an adequate food supply. This is supported by the lack of seasonal differences in ranging behavior of mongoose lemurs.  相似文献

We examined the diet of an endangered frog, Rana porosa brevipoda inhabiting rice fields of western Japan, by forced regurgitation of stomach contents. The frog diet consisted of a wide variety of arthropods, and ants, beetles, dipterans, bugs, orthopterans, and spiders, which were especially prominent. These prey taxa were also collected in large numbers by sweep-net samplings made in the frog habitat, and relative abundances of prey taxa in frog diet and those in sweep samples were found to be significantly correlated. Aquatic forms did not contribute much to the frog diet, but were found to be taken more frequently and in larger numbers in irrigated fields than in drained fields. These findings suggest that prey availability around frog habitat is very important to regulate the food items of R. p. brevipoda. On the other hand, terrestrial components of frog habitats are indicated to be important because the frog highly depended on terrestrial invertebrates. From these results, we consider it imperative to preserve terrestrial components linked with aquatic environments to conserve biodiversity in rice field ecosystems.  相似文献

Digestive tract morphology and function of captive garden warblers (Sylvia borin) were measured during four stages of their endogenous circannual rhythm: before, during and after their autumn fattening prior to migration to wintering grounds in Africa, and after a partially simulated migratory flight. Food intake increased by 33% during fattening, utilization efficiency of dry matter tended to increase, and that of energy increased significantly (P0.01). This was because digestive tract capacity (measured as dry tissue mass) increased, so that mean retention time of food remained constant before, during and after fattening (80–84 min). After a 48-h period of starvation of fattened birds to partially simulate a migratory flight, food intake was lower on the first day of refeeding than on the next 4 days, and utilization efficiency was higher on that day, at least partly because of a longer mean retention time (111 min versus 78 min on the third day). Digestive tract dry tissue mass fell by 50% during starvation, and that of the small intestine by 63%. It is concluded that the garden warbler adapts to long-distance migration without feeding by rapidly reducing the size of its digestive tract, an expensive tissue to maintain, during migration in order to save weight and energy, and possibly also to supply part of the fuel and protein required for the flight. The cost of this strategy appears to be the time taken to rebuild the gut at stopover sites with food, but the low probability of finding such a site in the Sahara Desert means that this strategy is probably optimal for garden warblers.  相似文献
