The African butterfly Danaus chrysippus , like other members of the family Danaidae, feeds as a larva on species of milkweeds (Asclepiadaceae). It has been demonstrated in a sample from a West African population that only a minority of adult D. chrysippus accumulated detectable amounts of poisonous and presumably emetic cardenolides from their larval foodplants. It has also been shown in D. chrysippus and the related monarch butterfly ( D. plexippus ) that the cardenolide content of adults varies with that of their respective milkweed foodplants.
Three population samples of D. chrysippus from sites in East Africa are analysed for cardenolides using the spectrophotometric technique refined by Brower, Edmunds & Moffitt (1975), which allows the assay of individual butterflies. The East African samples all have a palatability spectrum with a considerably higher percentage of cardenolide-containing individuals than the West African one.
This is discussed in terms of its effect on potential bird predators and the 'automimicry' of emetic by palatable individuals. In East Africa D. chrysippus is polymorphic and appears to act as a model in a complex mimicry ring, whereas in West Africa it is monomorphic and may have 'shed' most of its mimics. This latter hypothesis is discussed in the light of our results.

An ecological study was made of a population of caterpillars of the African queen butterfly (Danaus chrysippus) feeding on three species of asclepiad plants at Nungua, Ghana, over a nine month period in 1972-73. The principal sources of mortality of caterpillars are probably the parasitic hymenopterans Apanteles chrysippi and Charops sp. There is an inverse correlation between the population of caterpillars and incidence of parasitization. This, and other evidence, suggests that the two parasites are important in limiting the population of Danaus chrysippus below the level imposed by the available food supply. Early instar caterpillars are probably palatable to birds but later instars may be edible or emetic depending on the toxicity of their food plant. It is suggested that the early instar caterpillars are cryptic whilst late instars are cryptic from a distance but conspicuous from nearby, and these may be aposematic or mimetic according to the nature of the food plant. Caterpillars parasitized by Apanteles are paler and hence more cryptic than normal caterpillars. There is also a green, cryptic morph present in the population at low frequency. It is suggested that there is a correlation between colour of caterpillars and the principal source of mortality: i.e., cryptic caterpillars are palatable to birds, suffer heavy predation but a low incidence of parasitization, whilst conspicuous caterpillars are unpalatable to many birds, suffer little predation but have a high incidence of parasitization.

Haemolymph and osmeterial secretions of caterpillars of Lymantria monacha (Linnaeus) and L. concolor Walker were analysed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry for low molecular weight secondary metabolites. The similarities of their chemical compositions were determined by means of cluster analysis techniques in order to characterize possible chemical variations related to developmental stage or food of the larvae. For this purpose, two dissimilarity coefficients (Euclidean distances, Canberra metrics) and four clustering methods (UPGMA, WPGMA, WPGMC, single linkage) were combined. The patterns of secondary compounds obtained from the haemolymph and osmeterial secretions studied did not differ statistically significantly between two groups of L. monacha larvae fed with either larch, Larix decidua Mil., or Norway spruce, Picea abies (L.), indicating no relevant influence of plant chemistry. However, haemolymph of penultimate instar larvae of L. concolor fed on Rhododendron contained a mixture of compounds differing statistically significantly from that of last instar caterpillars. The total compositions of the corresponding gland secretions were statistically identical though the presence/amounts of individual compounds varied. This suggested that the haemolymph composition reflected changing physiological requirements of the successive instars, whereas the composition of the defensive mixtures remained comparatively constant, possibly due to a constant spectrum of potential enemies. A more pronounced age-dependence of larval chemistry was shown by a similar analysis of data from various developmental stages of L. dispar (Linnaeus) and one of its food plants. This analysis suggested plant composition affected the secondary chemistry of early larval instars of L. dispar. The results are discussed in terms of the roles of secondary metabolites in defence against natural enemies.

In laboratory trials, Glypta variegata, a common endoparasitoid of leafrollers in North America, successfully parasitized first through third instar Choristoneura rosaceana and first to fourth instar Pandemis limitata. Significantly more second instar C. rosaceana were parasitized when temperatures fluctuated between 30.3 and 12.0°C (16 L:8 D) than when temperatures fluctuated between 17.5 and 4.0°C (12 L:12 D), similar to fall conditions in southern British Columbia, Canada. Under the warmer simulated summer conditions, an average female wasp began to parasitize C. rosaceana 8 days post-emergence (range: 4-16 days), lived 31 days (range: 24-37 days) and successfully parasitized 28 larvae (range: 1-89). When parasitized, C. rosaceana larvae consumed less food in their last two instars than did unparasitized female larvae.

Resin glycoside material extracted from the periderm tissue of storage roots from sweetpotato, Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam., was bioassayed for effects on survival, development, and fecundity of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.). The resin glycoside was incorporated into an artificial diet and fed to P. xylostella larvae. First instars were placed individually into snap-top centrifuge vials containing artificial diet with one of six concentrations of resin glycoside material (0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 1.00, 1.50, and 2.00 mg/ml). Each replication consisted of 10 individuals per concentration, and the experiment was repeated 13 times. Vials were incubated at 25 degrees C and a photoperiod of 14:10 (L:D) h in a growth chamber. After 6 d, surviving larvae were weighted and their sex determined, then returned to their vials. Later, surviving pupae were weighed and incubated at 25 degrees C until moths emerged. Females were fed, mated with males from the laboratory colony, and allowed to lay eggs on aluminum foil strips. Lifetime fecundity (eggs/female) was measured. There were highly significant negative correlations between resin glycoside levels and survival, and between glycoside levels and larval weight after 6 d of feeding. For larvae that lived at least 6 d, there was no additional mortality that could be attributed to the resin glycoside material. However, there was a significant positive correlation between glycoside dosages and developmental time of larvae (measured as days until pupation). Lifetime fecundity also was negatively affected at sublethal doses. Resin glycosides may contribute to the resistance in sweetpotato breeding lines to soil insect pests.

Tritonia diomedea Bergh was reared from oviposition, through metamorphosis to reproductive maturity in the laboratory. The larvae of T. diomedea are planktotrophic and undergo considerable shell growth (from 144.6–329 μ average maximum shell length). Metamorphosis does not require induction, but there may be a preference to metamorphose in the presence of the probable adult prey, a small Virgularia sp. Larvae in cultures fed no food, Dunaliella tertiolecta Butcher Isochrysis galbana Parke, or Monochrysis lutheri Droop did not achieve metamorphic competence at near ambient sea-water temperatures (11.9±1.3 and 13.0±0.8°C). Larvae from cultures fed Monochrysis at room temperature (20.8±1.5°C) or fed a 1 : 1 mixture of Isochrysis and Monochrysis at near ambient sea-water temperatures did metamorphose. Even so, only those larvae fed the 1 : 1 mixture survived more than a few days following metamorphosis. Adult behavioral patterns developed gradually, feeding being first observed at 5 days, swimming in response to NaCl crystals at about 60 days, copulation at about 272 days, and oviposition at about 277 days after metamorphosis. Growth rates were determined for field collected Tritonia diomedea; smaller animals gained and lost weight relatively faster than larger animals.

The attack, escape and predation rates for larvae of aphidophagous ladybird Propylea dissecta (Mulsant) and Coccinella transversalis Fabricius were quantified as a potential mechanism leading to the differences in the incidence of cannibalism and intraguild predation. These rates were compared at four larval instars within and between the species. The attack rates of larvae of C. transversalis were significantly higher than those of P. dissecta towards conspecific and heterospecific victims. For both species, third instars exhibited maximum tendency to attack. Escape rates in C. transversalis were higher than P. dissecta. In P. dissecta, the second instars made a greater number of escapes than other conspecific instars after being attacked by same stage cannibal or heterospecific predator. In P. dissecta, first instars suffered maximum mortality due to cannibalism and intraguild predation by conspecifics and heterospecifics of the same and older developmental stage. No larvae of C. transversalis were eaten by P. dissecta of the same stage. These results suggest that the larvae of P. dissecta were more often potential cannibals than intraguild predators, while the reverse was the case in C. transversalis. Based on this finding, it could be predicted that in patchy prey habitats, high rates of larval cannibalism in P. dissecta would occur with a high risk of cannibalism of first instars. Larvae of C. transversalis would respond as intraguild predators, while those of P. dissecta as intraguild prey. The greater size and walking activity of C. transversalis could be possible reason for this tendency.

The effects of diet and temperature on instar numbers and head capsule width in Spodoptera litura F. were compared among individuals reared on an artificial diet, lettuce and perilla leaves at 25 and 30 °C. The number of instars that the insect completed varied as diet and temperature were changed. All the larvae developed through seven instars at 25 °C regardless of diet, but at 30 °C, the number of instars varied depending on the diet. All larvae fed on lettuce leaves had six instars, while larvae fed on the artificial diet passed through seven instars. On perilla, 52% of larval individuals had six instars, and the rest had seven instars. Head capsule width could be used effectively to determine the developmental stage of individual larvae. The frequency distribution of head capsule width showed six or seven distinct peaks, depending on diet and temperature conditions. The relationship between mean head capsule width and weight of larvae was described using an exponential model.

Müllerian mimicry, in which there is convergence in coloration between unrelated unpalatable species, should lead to uniformity in appearance, not polymorphism, and so the occurrence in tropical Africa of unrelated species of unpalatable butterflies with corresponding polymorphic colour forms suggested a problem of special evolutionary interest. Field work in Uganda and Sierra Leone in 1964 72 demonstrated a statistical association between the occurrence and relative frequencies of polymorphic forms in Danaus chrysippus (Danainae) and Acraea encedon (Acraeinae) which was deemed as confirmation of a Müllerian relationship between them. There were, however, certain anomalies which at the time remained unresolved. Later, in 1976, it was discovered that what had been called A. encedon is in reality two sibling species. A. encedon and a new one, named as A. encedana. The two differ in the structure of both male and female genitalia and in the coloration and the food-plants of the larvae. The recognition of the additional species has enabled a re-assessment of the polymorphie Müllerian association with D. chrysippus. It emerges that, although there is a close qualitative and quantitative reciprocal mimetic relationship between A. encedana and D. chrysippus, the relationship between A. encedon and D. chrysippus is much weaker, and in places non-exitent. The possible origin of the mimetic polymorphism is discussed in terms of hybridization of previously allopatric and monomorphic populations which have met as a consequence of recent expansions of geographical range in all three species resulting from forest clearance and the spread of savanna-like conditions in previously forested areas.

Larvae of the moth Samea multiplicalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), developed more rapidly when their food plant, Salvinia molesta was richer in nitrogen. Larvae that fed on plants with less than 1.35% nitrogen during their first instar completed the larval stage in 18.0–24.2 days, after passing through six instars. In contrast, larvae that had fed on food richer in nitrogen during their first instar completed the larval stage in 14.1–17.4 days, and passed through five instars. Experience of nitrogen in later instars had little additional effect on total larval development time. Oöcyte complements of 1-day old adult females was correlated with the mean food nitrogen content over the larval period. Food nitrogen content experienced by larvae in earlier instars was as important as that in the final instars, in determining number of mature oöcytes, which suggests early conditioning of the nitrogen use effciencies of later instars.
