The effect on clubroot of the addition to a mineral soil of calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate and sodium carbonate was studied in two field experiments during a 3-yr period. Applications of calcium carbonate (ground limestone) at 10 or 20 t/ha increased the soil pH from 6×7 to 7×9; sodium carbonate at 7×5 t/ha to pH 8×3 and calcium sulphate (gypsum) at 20 t/ha caused a slight depression in pH to 6×6. 98% of cabbage plants showed clubroot symptoms in the untreated plots after 3 yr and the percentages were 0×7, 1×6 and 66×6 for the calcium carbonate, sodium carbonate and calcium sulphate treatments respectively. Yields were significantly increased by all three materials. There were no significant differences in disease incidence or in yield when calcium carbonate was used at 10 or 20 t/ha either applied as a single application or as two half-rate applications. Soil from the calcium carbonate treated plots was used in a greenhouse experiment where the addition of inoculum of Plasmodiophora brassicae resulted in a large increase in clubroot incidence. There was no evidence that a biological suppressor was present in the high pH, low disease incidence soils.  相似文献

Summary The availability to oats of adsorbed sulphate in soils and of sulphate impurity in calcium carbonate was studied in pot-culture experiments.When calcium carbonate was added to soils with pH values ranging from 5.7 to 7.4 the uptake of sulphur by oats was increased, due probably to enhanced mineralization of soil organic sulphur. When the calcium carbonate contained sulphate impurity the uptake of sulphur was further increased by an amount comparable with the release of sulphate which could be expected from a reaction of the calcium carbonate with the exchangeable hydrogen of the soil. Sulphate in excess of this amount appeared to be largely unavailable. Uptake of sulphur by oats from calcareous sands containing large amounts of insoluble sulphate associated with calcium carbonate also suggested that soil sulphur in this form had very low availability to plants.Substantial increases in the amounts of sulphur extracted by reagents commonly used for the determination of adsorbed sulphate in soils occurred when soils were airdried at about 20°C. Decreases in adsorbed sulphate in soils following the growth of oats in pot culture confirmed that adsorbed sulphate is readily available to plants.  相似文献

The influence of soil application of carbofuran on the growth response of groundnut, and both mycorrhizal colonization and sporulation of Glomus clarum was studied in a pot culture experiment. Carbofuran application with or without mycorrhizal inoculation increased the height of the potted plants measured 8 weeks after sowing. Mycorrhizal plants were significantly taller than nonmycorrhizal plants at the final harvest time (14 weeks). Carbofuran, at the recommmended field dose of up to 2 kg/ha, greatly increased shoot dry matter and pod yield in mycorrhizal groundnut. Colonization and sporulation by this VAM fungus were also enhanced significantly at these dose levels. The application of carbofuran at 5 kg/ha inhibited both growth and mycorrhizal status of groundnut.  相似文献

Effect of nitrogen application on number of flowers per plant, number of different types of flowers per plant, length of style, number of fruits per plant and fruit yield/ha of eggplant was investigated under controlled greenhouse conditions. Nitrogen was supplied at 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175 and 200 kg N/ha with one control (no nitrogen) treatment. Nitrogen supplied at 200 kg N/ha gave best results and significantly produced the highest number of flowers per plant, fruits per plant and yield (32.24 ton/ha) over control plants. Nitrogen failed to influence style length and type of flowers i.e. long, medium, pseudo-short and short styled flowers. Nitrogen application at 150 and 175 kg N/ha showed comparable results with nitrogen applied at 200 kg N/ha.  相似文献

Summary Field experiments were conducted during 1979 and 1980 summer seasons on sandy loam soils of low moisture retentive capacity to study the effect of high frequency irrigation at different levels of N on groundnut yield and nutrient uptake (NPK). Four irrigation frequencies (irrigation at 2, 4, 6 and 8 cm cumulative can evaporation, corresponding to irrigation once in 3, 5, 7 and 10 days respectively) and four levels of nitrogen (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg N/ha) were tested in a factorial randomized block design with three replications. Pod yield of groundnut was maximum (3,293 kg/ha) when irrigations were scheduled at 4 cm cumulative can evaporation (once in 5 days). Addition of N did not increase the pod yield. N and P uptake by the crop was maximum (180 kg N and 18 kg P/ha) with high frequency irrigation of scheduling irrigation at 4 cm cumulative can evaporation. Highest uptake of N (183 kg/ha) and P (19 kg/ha) was with a combination of 20 kg N/ha and high frequency irrigation (4 cm CCE). K uptake was low with low irrigation frequency, while it was highest (67 kg K/ha) at 20 kg N/ha.  相似文献

Summary The availability of Ca from different levels of gypsum and calcium carbonate in a non-saline sodic soil has been investigated. Different levels of tagged gypsum (Ca45SO4.2H2O) and calcium carbonate (Ca45CO3) (i.e. 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 per cent of gypsum requirement) were mixed thoroughly in 3.5 Kg of a non-saline alkali soil (ESP, 48.4; ECe, 2.68 millimhos/cm). Dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata) — a legume and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) — a cereal were taken as test crops. Increasing levels of gypsum caused a gradual increase in the yield of dry matter, content of Ca and K in the plant tops and Ca:Na and (Ca+Mg):(Na+K) ratios in both the crops. Application of calcium carbonate caused a slight increase in the dry matter yield, content of Ca and Mg and Ca:Na and (Ca+Mg):(Na+K) ratios in barley, however, in case of dhaincha there was no such effect. Gypsum application caused a gradual decrease in the content of Na and P in both the crops. Total uptake of Ca, Mg, K, N and P per pot increased in response to gypsum application. The effect of calcium carbonate application on the total uptake of these elements was much smaller on dhaincha, but in barley there was some increasing trend.Increasing application of tagged gypsum and calcium carbonate caused a gradual increase in the concentration and per cent contribution of source Ca in both the crops, although, the rate of increase was considerably more in dhaincha. The availability of Ca from applied gypsum was considerably more than that from applied calcium carbonate. Efficiency of dhaincha to utilize Ca from applied sources was considerably more (i.e. about five times) than that of barley  相似文献

Regulation of the uptake and distribution of calcium in thetomato plant was investigated in plants grown in recirculatingnutrient solutions at electrical conductivities of 2,7,12 and17 millisiemens (mS). Despite an increased calcium content inthe nutrient solution at high conductivity (7–17 mS),the accumulation of calcium by fruit was progressively reducedby increasing salinity, particularly in the distal half. Theincidence of blossom-end rot in fruit (BER) also increased withsalinity. The uptake of water and 45Ca by plants was substantially reducedin the high salinity treatment (17 mS) and, to a lesser extent,by high relative humidity (90 per cent r.h. at 20 °C). Further,the translocation of 45Ca from roots to shoots was reduced byhigh salinity, while the percentage distribution of 45Ca tothe apex was reduced by high humidity. Only approx. 2 per centof the 45Ca taken up by a plant was imported by the truss. The uptake of 45Ca and its distribution among pedicel, calyxand berry by detached fruit in 24 h showed that fruit from highsalinity plants had a reduced uptake and a lower accumulationof 45 Ca in the berry than in the calyx. In addition, plants grown at high conductivity had a lower rateof xylem sap exudation from decapitated plants. The fruit ofthese plants had a smaller xylem cross-sectional area in thefruit pedicel and a smaller calyx than those of the low conductivitytreatment. O2-dependent CA2+ uptake by rat duodenal discs has been characterized and used in a revised assay for 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol-induced intestinal Ca2+ transport. Although both muscle and mucosal surfaces are exposed in this free-floating-disc assay, the Ca2+ influx across the muscle surface is small, not O2- or vitamin D-dependent, and can be subtracted out. Depriving the animals of food for 9-14 h before assay increases the O2-dependent uptake by about 75%. Half-saturation values for O2-dependent Ca2+ uptake as determined with this assay are: 0.8mM-Ca2+ (fed) and 0.5mM-Ca2+ (food-deprived) for vitamin D-deficient rats, and 0.9mM-Ca2+ (fed) and 1.5mM-Ca2+ (food-deprived) for rats dosed with 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol. The maximum velocity of uptake varies from 6.7nmol of Ca2+ per cm2/min (fed) to 7.0nmol of Ca2+ per cm2/min (food-deprived) for vitamin D-deficient rats and 16.7nmol of Ca2+ per cm2/min (fed) to 29 nmol of Ca2+ per cm2/min (food-deprived) for 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol-treated rats. By using a 5 min preincubation and 15 min incubation with 1.0mM-Ca2+, duodenal tissue taken from vitamin D-treated rats shows about a 3-fold increase in O2-dependent Ca2+ uptake when compared with tissue taken from vitamin D-deficient animals. The calcium ionophore A23187, depending on concentration, either has no significant effect on or inhibits the O2-dependent uptake, rather than increasing it. Actinomycin D, at a dose of 2 micrograms/g, inhibits the O2-dependent uptake in intestinal discs from both vitamin D-deficient and vitamin D-treated rats by 58 and 80% respectively, when administered in vivo 3 1/2 h before assay.  相似文献

Summary A pot experiment was conducted with groundnut crop in two red soils with various levels of application of calcium, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. The plants were analysed at vegetative, reproductive and post harvest stages for the uptake of nutrients. Up to vegetative stage, the crop absorbed 10 per cent of the total requirement of nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium. During the reproductive stage the crop removed about 40 to 50 per cent of the above nutrients. Between reproductive and harvest stages groundnut absorbed the remaining amount of the nutrients.Forms a part of the Ph.D. thesis of the first author approved by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.  相似文献

Summary The effect of CaCO3 and iron on the availability of iron, manganese phosphorus and calcium was studied in the greenhouse on pea (Pisum sativum L.) crop on a light textured soil, which was marginal in exchangeable calcium. Addition of calcium carbonate caused significant increase in dry matter yield with no added iron at both the stages of crop growth. But yeild intended to decrease with 8% CaCO3 at 75 days of crop growth. Dry matter yield also increased with the addition of iron upto 10 ppm at 45 days and upto 5 ppm at 75 days. The iron concentration and uptake decreased with the increase in CaCO3 and increased with the application of iron at both the stages of crop growth. The application of iron and CaCO3 decreased concentration and uptake of phosphorus significantly at both the stages.Like phosphorus, concentration and uptake of manganese also decreased with the increase in added CaCO3 upto 8% and iron upto 20 ppm at 45 and 75 days. The concentration of calcium increased with the addition of CaCO3 to the extent of 50 and 40% with 8% CaCO3 at 45 and 75 days, while the uptake of calcium increased more than 3 folds at 45 days and more than 2 folds at 75 days. The concentration of calcium decreased with the application of iron upto 20 ppm but the uptake at 45 days increased upto 10 ppm and at 75 days upto 5 ppm and then decreased.The concentration of Fe, P and Ca decreased at 75 days and that of Mn increased while the uptake of all these nutrients increased at 2nd stage due to higher dry matter.  相似文献

Aluminium (Al) has been recognised as a cause of bone tissue disorders. The aims of this work were to investigate: (i) whether Al affects calcium (Ca) entry into enterocyte, and (ii) the possibility that the Al effect upon calbindin-D-related Ca transport would be influenced by intestinal glutathione (GSH) levels. In isolated chicken duodenal enterocytes, 100 microM Al lactate produced a decrease in both, the maximum uptake rate and the affinity constant of 45Ca uptake (CaUPT). This effect of Al on CaUPT was concentration-dependent in the micromolar range, showing an inhibitory saturation type phenomenon which appeared to be higher at pH 6.5 than at pH 7.4, and was not modified by the Ca channel activators A23187 and capsaicin. The simultaneous administration of Al (50 mg elemental Al/kg body weight, as AlCl3) and GSH (10 mmol/kg body weight) to rats during 7 days, prevented the inhibitory effects of Al on Ca transport. The protective effect of GSH was accompanied by an increased duodenal calbindin-D9k expression. Experimental depletion of intestinal GSH by means of D,L-buthionin-[S,R] sulfoximine, a gamma-glutamylcystein-synthase inhibitor, given as a single i.p. dose of 2 mmol/kg body weight, enhanced the degree of reduction of Ca absorption ascribed to Al. Our results suggest that Al might interfere Ca uptake by enterocytes through a general effect on cell membrane, and that an oxidative stress state induced by Al would reduce intestine GSH level affecting calbindin-D function and/or synthesis, thus leading to a reduced transcellular Ca absorption in the small intestine.  相似文献

Continuous nondestructive monitoring of intracellular ionized calcium in isolated squid axons by differential absorption spectroscopy (using arsenazo III and antipyrylazo III) was used to study uptake of calcium by carbonyl cyanide, p-trifluoromethoxy-phenylhydrazone (FCCP)- and (or) cyanide (CN)-sensitive and insensitive constituents of axoplasm. Known calcium loads imposed on the axon by stimulation produced proportional increments of free axoplasmic calcium. Measurement of increments in ionized calcium as a function of load confirmed earlier reports of buffering in normal and FCCP- and (or) CN-poisoned axons. Measurement of rates of calcium uptake by presumed mitochondria showed little uptake at ambient Ca below 200--400 nM, with sigmoidal rise to about 20--30 mumol/kg axoplasm per min (calculated to be about 200 mmol/kg mitochondrial protein per min) at 50 micrometer, indicating a functional threshold for presumed mitochondrial uptake well above physiological ionized calcium concentration. Treatment of stimulated axons with cyanide, to release calcium from presumed mitochondria, showed that the sensitivity to cyanide decreased progressively with time after stimulation (t 1/2 = 3--10 min) implying transfer of sequestered calcium into a less metabolically labile form.  相似文献

The rate of calcium transport by sarcoplasmic reticulum vesicles from dog heart assayed at 25 degrees C, pH 7.0, in the presence of oxalate and a low free Ca2+ concentration (approx. 0.5 microM) was increased from 0.091 to 0.162 mumol . mg-1 . min-1 with 100 nM calmodulin, when the calcium-, calmodulin-dependent phosphorylation was carried out prior to the determination of calcium uptake in the presence of a higher concentration of free Ca2+ (preincubation with magnesium, ATP and 100 microM CaCl2; approx. 75 microM free Ca2+). Half-maximal activation of calcium uptake occurs under these conditions at 10-20 nM calmodulin. The rate of calcium-activated ATP hydrolysis by the Ca2+-, Mg2+-dependent transport ATPase of sarcoplasmic reticulum was increased by 100 nM calmodulin in parallel with the increase in calcium transport; calcium-independent ATP splitting was unaffected. The calcium-, calmodulin-dependent phosphorylation of sarcoplasmic reticulum, preincubated with approx. 75 microM Ca2+ and assayed at approx. 10 microM Ca2+ approaches maximally 3 nmol/mg protein, with a half-maximal activation at about 8 nM calmodulin; it is abolished by 0.5 mM trifluperazine. More than 90% of the incorporated [32P]phosphate is confined to a 9-11 kDa protein, which is also phosphorylated by the catalytic subunit of the cAMP-dependent protein kinase and most probably represents a subunit of phospholamban. The stimulatory effect of 100 nM calmodulin on the rate of calcium uptake assayed at 0.5 microM Ca2+ was smaller following preincubation of sarcoplasmic reticulum vesicles with calmodulin in the presence of approx. 75 microM Ca2+, but in the absence of ATP, and was associated with a significant degree of calmodulin-dependent phosphorylation. However, the stimulatory effect on calcium uptake and that on calmodulin-dependent phosphorylation were both absent after preincubation with calmodulin, without calcium and ATP, suggestive of a causal relationship between these processes.  相似文献

In contrast to previous investigations at 25 degrees C, glucose was shown to support 45Ca2+ uptake at 37 degrees C in intact ELD ascites tumor cells. Intact ascites tumor cells in vitro accumulated up to 5.0 micromol of 45Ca2+ per g cells dry wt. within 20 min. In the presence of 10.0 mM glucose, intracellular P(i) levels fell from 40.0 micromol x g(-1) cells dry wt. to 20.0 micromol x g(-1) cells dry wt. in 5 min. Intracellular P(i) levels were maintained by 20.0 mM extracellular Tris-P(i). 45Ca2+ uptake was inhibited in P(i)-depleted cells, even though the metabolic rate (as measured by Q(lactate)) and energy state (as measured by ATP levels) were at acceptable levels. Evidence has been presented suggesting that previous reports of glucose inhibition of calcium uptake can be attributed to a competition for available intracellular P(i) between glycolytic processes and the mitochondrial calcium uptake mechanism.  相似文献

It is commonly known that calcium promotes NO3 - uptake in many crop species. However, calcium enhancement of NH4 + uptake by plants has received little attention. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Ca supplements on NH4 + uptake and plant growth in solution cultured rice. Supplemental Ca applied at vegetative and reproductive phases of plant ontogeny tended to stimulate NH4 + absorption, and accordingly resulted in a better straw and grain yield. However, excessively supplied Ca (400 ppm) was detrimental to plant growth. Increases in straw and grain yield observed at Ca levels up to 300 ppm were linked to the Ca-enhanced activities of glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamate synthase (GOGAT), and ribulose 1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco).  相似文献

Tomato fruit grown in diurnally fluctuating salinities (8 mScm–1 during the day and 3 mS cm–1 at night; 8/3mS cm–1), accumulated the same amount of dry matter andmagnesium (Mg) as those in constant 3 or 8 mS cm–1, butan intermediate amount of calcium (Ca). Raising the salinityof the nutrient solution by enriching with macronutrients orby adding NaCl had similar effects. The uptake of 45Ca by tomato plants during the day was greaterthan at night and was reduced by salinity in both periods. Whilethe uptake of 45Ca by 8/3 mS plants at night was similar tothat of 3 mS plants, the daily uptake was less than that in3 and 5.5 mS plants. The Ca content of tomato fruit increased with truss number at3 and 5.5 mS cm–1 but not at 8/3 and 8 mS cm–1.Within the same truss, the distal fruit had a lower Ca contentbut higher Mg content than the proximal fruit. The reductionin Ca content of the distal fruit at 8/3 mS cm–1 was similarto that at 5.5 mS cm–1. The Ca content of the tissue atthe distal end of the 8/3 mS fruit was lower than that of the5.5 mS fruit. Similarly, the distribution of 45Ca to the distalhalf of the detached 8/3 mS fruit was less than that of 5.5mS fruit. Conflicting evidence has been reported regarding the role of endothelin-1, a potent vasconstrictor peptide, in stimulating extracellular calcium influx in rabbit vascular smooth muscle. The objective of this study was to elucidate the effects of endothelin-1 on transmembrane 45Ca2+ influx and intracellular calcium mobilization in cultured rabbit aortic smooth muscle cells. In calcium containing buffer, endothelin-1 induced a concentration-dependent 45Ca2+ efflux response over the range of 10 pM to 100 nM with an EC50 of approximately 60 pM. Maximum endothelin-stimulated 45Ca2+ efflux was not affected by the absence of extracellular calcium or the presence of 1 microM verapamil. Endothelin-1 did not induce transplasmalemmal 45Ca2+ uptake at times up to 30 min. These findings suggest that an alteration in intracellular calcium handling, rather than extracellular calcium influx, is responsible for the endothelin-stimulated increase in intracellular calcium concentration in rabbit aortic smooth muscle cells.  相似文献

Summary Three levels of irrigation, three plant densities and three fertiliser schedules were tested in 33 factorial confounded design with two replications in winter on sandy loam soils of Tirupati campus of Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University. Pod yield did not vary due to the plant densities and the fertiliser schedules when the crop was sown in optimum time during 1980. When the sowings were delayed, as in 1979, 444000 plants per ha and 60 kg N ha−1, 40 kg P ha−1 and 100 kg K ha−1 was optimum. Scheduling irrigation at 25 or 50% DASM (depletion of available soil moisture) was optimum for the groundnut crop. There was no difference in the uptake of NPK due to irrigations at 25 and 50% DASM in both the years. Low plant density was as effective as high plant density for efficient use of fertilisers. Uptake of NPK by the crop was relatively high at higher fertiliser levels. However, this higher uptake did not contribute to high pod yield, probably due to utilisation of absorbed nutrients for rank vegetative growth.  相似文献

The response of two peanut cultivars (Tainan 9 and SK 38) to applications of six boron (B) rates (H3BO3 at 0, 0.12, 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 kg B ha–1) at two calcium levels [nil (-Ca) or CaSO4 at 100 kg Ca ha–1 (+Ca)] to a B-deficient Oxic Paleustult was studied in a pot experiment. Without added Ca, both cultivars had low seed yields and gave only small responses to B. Similarly, without added B, both cultivars had low seed yields and did not respond to Ca. But, with added Ca or B, they responded strongly to B and Ca, respectively. In both cultivars, deficiencies of Ca or B depressed seed dry weight by depressing seed size by over 75%. Boron deficiency further depressed seed dry weight by decreasing the number of seeds per plant by decreasing the number of seeds per pod in Tainan 9, and the number of pods per plant in SK 38. Seed dry weight was depressed more than pod dry weight, so that both Ca and B deficiencies severely depressed the shelling %. With added Ca, tainan 9 responded to lower levels of B than SK 38, reaching maximum seed dry weight at 0.12 kg B ha–1. At this low level of B. SK 38 yielded only half the seed dry weight of Tainan 9. But SK 38 continued to respond to increasing levels of B to 2 kg ha–1, producing a maximum seed yield 40% higher than Tainan 9. The results indicate that where all other nutrients are adequate, SK 38 will yield better than Tainan 9 on soils with high B, but worse on soils with low B. The implications of these findings for the selection of peanut cultivars are discussed.  相似文献

Inoculation with rhizobia or application of Nod factors (lipo-chitooligosaccharides, LCOs) causes transient increases in cytosolic calcium concentration in root hairs of legume plants. We conducted experiments to evaluate whether application of LCO and inoculation with rhizobia improved (45)CaCl(2) uptake into soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) leaves. Roots of soybean seedlings with one developing trifoliolate were immersed in Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal liquid medium containing treatment solutions and (45)CaCl(2), and the plants were incubated under continuous light. After 24 h, leaf samples were taken, and their radioactivity levels were determined. Addition of NodBj-V (C18:1 MeFuc) at a concentration of 10(-7) M increased (45)Ca(2+) uptake. Inoculation with genistein-induced Bradyrhizobium japonicum strain 532C and USDA3 also increased (45)Ca(2+) uptake; whereas, inoculation with strain Bj-168, a nodC-mutant incapable of producing LCO, did not. Rhizobia that do not normally nodulate soybean, i.e. Rhizobium leguminosarum, and Sinorhizobium meliloti did not affect calcium uptake, nor did the tetramer or pentamer of chitosan, or lumichrome. Surprisingly, Rhizobium sp. NGR234, which can nodulate some types of soybean, although without effective N(2)-fixation, also did not affect calcium uptake. This work suggests that the rhizobial symbiosis, in addition to its known role in provision of nitrogen fixation, also improves early calcium uptake into soybean plants.  相似文献
