Analysis of lateral and dorsoventral radiographic films shows that ingestion, transport, and mastication in Pedetes capensis (Rodentia) are cyclic and their movement patterns are essentially similar for the three food types offered. During the ingestion cycle, closing of the mouth is accompanied by a backward translation of the condyles, so that movement is predominantly orthal. During the opening stage, the extent of the anterior condylar translation is smaller. As a result the mandibular incisors move ventrally and posteriorly. During the ingestion cycles, food is transported to the back of the tongue, with the transverse rugae and the folds of the upper lip playing important roles. Springhares show a bilateral masticatory pattern; food is chewed on both sides simultaneously. During chewing, the condyles lie in their most forward position at maximum opening of the mouth. The mouth is closed by rotation of the lower jaw around the temporomandibular joint coupled with posterior condylar translation. At the beginning of the slow-closing stage, the upward rotation of the mandible slows and the jaw slowly shifts forward. During the grinding stage, the mandible is shifted forward with both toothrows in occlusion. During the opening stage, the jaw returns to its starting position. Comparison of kinematic and anatomical data on rodent mastication suggests that some dental characteristics form the most important factors regulating the masticatory pattern and consequently allow reasonably reliable prediction of rodent masticatory patterns.  相似文献

The hind limb muscles of the spring hare (Pedetes capensis) were found to be relatively heavier than the hind limb muscles of the cane rat (Thryonomys gregorianus). The distribution of succine dehydrogenase activity was investigated in four of these muscles (m. gluteus superficialis, m.semimembranosus, m. biceps femoris and m.rectus femoris) from both animals. It was found that the spring hare had a higher proportion of low-activity fibres in all four muscles than the cane rat. All muscle fibre types were also smaller in diameter in the spring hare than the cane rat. These results are discussed in relation to the different locomotry habits of the two animals.  相似文献

Springhares are large rodents that live in arid and semi-arid regions of Africa. We deprived springhares of water for periods of up to 7 days to determine what physiological adaptations, if any, enable them to survive in arid regions without drinking. During water deprivation, springhares lost up to 30% body weight and produced a mean maximum urine concentration of 2548 mosmol kg−1 with a maximum of 3076 mosmol kg−1 in an individual animal. Haematocrit and plasma sodium and potassium concentrations were well regulated throughout water deprivation at 47.5 ± 3.8% and 132.6 ± 7.4 mmol l−1 and 3.5 ± 0.7 mmol l−1, respectively, while plasma osmolality increased slightly from 293 ± 12.5 mosmol kg−1 to 324 ± 7.3 mosmol kg−1. Springhares thus appeared to be good osmoregulators and were able to maintain plasma volume during 7 days of water deprivation. In addition to the production of a relatively concentrated urine, water loss was limited by the lowered solute load and faecal water loss achieved by a reduction in food consumption and by the production of very dry faeces. Variation in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was used together with comparative cytogenetics to examine the evolutionary history and taxonomic status of an African hystricomorphous rodent, the springhare Pedetes capensis. The mtDNA phylogeographic structure showed that the majority of the southern African populations (P. c. capensis) are characterized by unique but closely related maternal lineages. Based on restriction endonuclease fragment analysis, the east African populations (P. c. surdaster) appear more structured and are distinguished from those in southern Africa by an average sequence divergence of 5.52% (±1.4%). This marked divergence is concordant with results of the cytogenetic study. Specimens from southern Africa have 2n = 38, and those from east Africa 2n = 40. The change in diploid number is due to a single centric fusion. It is suggested that the closure of the Brachystegia or miombo woodland (20,000–10,000 B.P.), which delimits contemporary springhare ranges, may have been too recent to account for the accumulated genetic differences that distinguish these taxa. While rifting and associated habitat changes in east Africa can be invoked to explain genetic structure in this region, the southern African springhare populations, which have a high incidence of locality-specific haplotypes, show a shallow phylogeographic structure, in keeping with a relatively recent range expansion from smaller source populations. Given the magnitude of genetic, morphological, and ethological differences between the two geographic isolates, we believe that there is strong support for the elevation of the east African and southern African springhare populations to full species status, thus supporting earlier taxonomic treatments of this rodent.  相似文献

The maternal and paternal behavior of Kerodon rupestris was examined. Quantitative differences between fathers and mothers and between mothers raising young with fathers present and with fathers absent were assessed. Growth rates of young raised by paired females and by lone females were compared. The male provides direct paternal care to the young by engaging in allogrooming, sniffing, and huddling. There is no significant difference between the sexes in the amount of contact promoting behavior given to the offspring, nor are the sexes significantly different in the amount of exploratory sniffing of the offspring. When the male is absent, the female spends a greater amount of time in contact with the young. Young raised by lone females gained significantly more weight than young raised by paired females. The suggestion that indirect paternal care acts to reduce female aggression to the young and relieve the energy expenditure burden of the female is discussed. The results indicate that social experience is gained at the expense of physical nurturing when the male is present.  相似文献

Irisin was first identified in muscle cells. We detected irisin immunoreactivity in various organs of the crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata). In the epidermis, irisin immunoreactivity was localized mainly in stratum basale, stratum spinosum and stratum granulosum layers; immunoreactivity was not observed in the stratum corneum. In the dermis, irisin was found in the external and internal root sheath, cortex and medulla of hair follicles, and in sebaceous glands. Irisin immunoreactivity was found in the neural retina and skeletal muscle fibers associated with the eye. The pineal and thyroid glands also exhibited irisin immunoreactivity.  相似文献

The karyotypes of Hystrix coreana from eastern USSR and H. patula from USA were investigated by Giemsa C-banding. Both species are outbreeders and have 2n = 4x = 28. The karyotype of two plants of H. coreana has 10 metacentric, 6 submetacentric, 8 heterobrachial and 4 SAT chromosomes; two plants differed by having 12 metacentric, 4 submetacentric, 8 heterobrachial and 4 SAT-chromosomes, and 10 metacentric, 4 submetacentric, 9 heterobrachial and 5 SAT-chromosomes, respectively. The C-banding pattern had no or few inconspicuous intercalary bands, but conspicuous telomeric C-bands in one or both arms giving a high content of heterochromatin (16.3–18.2%). The chromosome complement of one plant of H. patula had 8 metacentric, 6 submetacentric, 8 heterobrachial and 6 SAT-chromosomes. The C-banding pattern had between 1 and 4 intercalary or centromeric bands and conspicuous telomeric bands on one or both arms giving a high content of constitutive heterochromatin (16.4%).  相似文献

The prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii among West African rodent, Thryonomys swinderianus, was assessed by the Sabin-Feldman dye-test. All of the 104 animals examined in the study were seropositive for Toxoplasma dye-test antibody. This indicates that there exists among these rodents a considerable reservoir of Toxoplasma from which infection can be transmitted to man and other animal species in that area.  相似文献

The carotid arterial system of the porcupine Hysitrix cristota has been studied using light and electron microscopy. Emphasis has been placed on describing the structure and innervation of the carotid sinus area located at the origin of the internal carotid artery. The sinus wall has a largely elastic structure and a reduced smooth muscle content. A functional relationship is proposed between the elastic structure of the sinus wall and baroreceptor mechanisms.  相似文献

Background  

Biological invasions can be considered one of the main threats to biodiversity, and the recognition of common ecological and evolutionary features among invaders can help developing a predictive framework to control further invasions. In particular, the analysis of successful invasive species and of their autochthonous source populations by means of genetic, phylogeographic and demographic tools can provide novel insights into the study of biological invasion patterns. Today, long-term dynamics of biological invasions are still poorly understood and need further investigations. Moreover, distribution and molecular data on native populations could contribute to the recognition of common evolutionary features of successful aliens.  相似文献

Giemsa C-band staining of somatic chromosomes in Allium cepa, A. cepa cv. Shallot, A. fistulosum and A. galanthum shows that these four taxa are characterised by all chromosomes having one band at each telomere, except chromosome arms with satellites, in which case the band is proximal to the nucleolar constriction. This similarity is correlated with common morphological characteristics and an ability of the three species to hybridize with one another, indicating that they have a close genetic relationship. The results indicate that Giemsa C-bands are evolutionarily conservative in this group and provide a useful criterion for determining relationships.  相似文献

利用随机扩增多态性DNA(RAPD)技术对小麦族披碱草属、鹅观草属和猬草属3个属的模式种进行了基因组DNA多态性分析。42个引物产物的290条谱带中,257条(88.62%)表现出多态性,说明披碱草属、鹅观草属和猬草属3个属的模式种间具有丰富的遗传多样性。利用290个RAPD标记,计算材料间Nei氏遗传相似性系和遗传距离,在NTSYS程序中利用UPGMA进行聚类。结果表明,Elymus sibiricus种不同居群间的遗传差异较小,遗传距离在0.097-0.180之间。E.sibiricus,Roegneria caucasica和Hystrix patula的种间遗传差异明显,遗传距离在0.458-0.605之间。H.patula与E.sibiricus的亲缘关系较近。R.caucasica与E.sibiricus的亲缘关系较远。  相似文献

Parasites are often dependent on their hosts for survival and dispersal and this led to a hypothesis that the evolution of obligate permanent host-specific parasites specifically will show phylogenetic congruence with their hosts. To investigate the factors influencing parasite evolution, mitochondrial- and nuclear DNA sequence data were used to test for genetic co-divergences between Hoplopleura and Polyplax lice occurring on four rodent taxa associated with the Aethomys/Micaelamys rodent complex. Mitochondrial DNA haplotype networks drawn from 24 rodents and 74 obligate permanent lice supported the existence of at least eight genetically distinct parasite lineages. Bayesian and maximum likelihood analyses showed considerable congruence between the phylogenies of the parasites and their hosts, and these finding were also partly supported in a fair amount of overlap in the timing of divergences. Jane co-phylogenetic reconstructions illustrated that co-divergences are the most parsimonious solution to explain the evolution within Polyplax, and also within Hoplopleura. Based on mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I sequence distances of >13% between strongly supported monophyletic parasite lineages, coupled to some unique morphological features detected for both lice taxa occurring on Micaelamys granti, we propose that the taxonomy of Polyplax and Hoplopleura studied herein is in need of revision. In addition, our findings provide examples of perfect topological co-divergence between parasites and their hosts, and in doing so also provide circumstantial evidence for co-evolution between these permanent host-specific parasites and their hosts. We argue that the signal of co-divergence is partly enforced by limited opportunities for host switching events across the landscape.  相似文献
