Thirteen meromictic lakes and two permanently stratified fjords in the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica, were surveyed in 1983 for photosynthetic bacteria. Burton Lake and Ellis Fjord were sampled throughout the year to determine seasonal variations. Physical and chemical parameters were recorded and related to the species present. The dominant species in waters with salinities of 100.7 g kg–1 were Chlorobium vibrioforme and Chlorobium limicola with populations at the O2–H2S interface in the range 0.3 to 6.7 × 106 ml–1. Neither of these species was found at higher salinities. Thiocapsa roseopersicina and a Chromatium sp. were found in low numbers (< 105 ml–1) in most of the same waters as the Chlorobium spp. These bacterial phototrophs developed in a narrow band below the O2–H2S interface where both light and H2S were available. Very low numbers (< 102 ml–1) of Rhodopseudomonas palustris were found in both oxic and anoxic waters having salinity 148 g kg–1. The dominance of the Chlorobium spp. is ascribed to their more efficient maintenance metabolism during the darkness, their faster growth at low light intensities (< 1 µE m–2 s–1) and the lack of selective filtering of incident light. The Chlorobium spp. grew well at –2 °C, but not –5°C in hypersaline waters. The concentration of H2S had no apparent effect on the development of the bacterial flora. Viable cells were found to depths of 100 m in Ellis Fjord indicating that viability in total darkness could have been maintained for periods of the order of 1700 days.  相似文献

A detailed survey was undertaken of the microbial communities of 16 saline lakes in the Vestfold Hills (Princess Elizabeth Land, eastern Antarctica), which ranged in salinity from slightly brackish (4–5‰) to hypersaline (maximum: 174‰). Temperatures at comparable sampling depths in the lakes ranged from −12.2°C to +10.5°C. Ranges in the abundances of bacteria, heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNAN) and phototrophic nanoflagellates (PNAN) were 1.40 × 107 l−1–1.58 × 1010 l−1, 4.83 × 104 l−1–1.70 × 107 l−1 and 0–1.02 × 107 l−1, respectively. There was considerable variation across the salinity spectrum, though in the case of bacteria and PNAN significantly higher concentrations of cells were seen in two of the most saline lakes. The autotrophic ciliate Mesodinium rubrum occurred in all but five of the lakes and was found at salinity levels up to 108‰. Heterotrophic ciliates were generally scarce. Dinoflagellates, particularly Gonyaulax c.f. tamarensis, Gyrodinium lachryma and Gymnodinium sp., occurred in the majority of the lakes. On the basis of chlorophyll a concentrations, nutrient levels and microplankton concentrations the lakes spanned the spectrum from ultra-oligotrophic to oligo/mesotrophic. The most saline lakes had much reduced species diversity compared with the less saline environments. Isolation from the marine environment has led to nutrient depletion, simplification and a truncated trophic structure. Received: 19 September 1996 / Accepted: 13 January 1997  相似文献

Summary The adult sizes and reproductive capabilities of populations of the cladoceran Daphniopsis studeri Rühe from freshwater and slightly saline lakes in the Vestfold Hills, Princess Elizabeth Land were monitored during December, 1990. The population of Crooked Lake was studied in detail from July 1990–March 1991. Limited samples were also obtained from Heard Island (sub Antarctic). Obligate parthenogenesis involving the production of subitaneous eggs appears to be the case. No males occurred. The overwintering populations of continental Antarctica consist mainly of adult females containing extensive fat reserves. The main reproductive effort occurs in spring. some females produce a smaller second brood during the summer. Reproductive output increases with adult size which is related to the nutrient status of the lake and its productivity. The Heard Island populations have a higher weight to length ratio than the Vestfold populations and have a much greater reproductive output.  相似文献

The inshore marine ecosystem off the Vestfold Hills,Antarctica   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:3
The planktonic, ice/water interface, and benthic communities at three sites off the coast of the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica, were examined over a complete year. The planktonic flora and fauna were composed predominantly of oceanic species with diatoms and copepods the numerically dominant groups. Primary production was largely restricted to the summer months except for epontic algae which developed in spring. The zooplankton exhibited a similar seasonal cycle but lagged some months behind that of the phytoplankton. The ice/water interface (epontic) fauna consisted of species from the plankton and benthos. Copepods were major contributors; however, two amphipod species dominated. Seasonality of the fauna in this habitat was determined by ice formation and breakout, and development of ice algae. Each of the benthic substrates supported a characteristic macrofaunal assemblage, although infaunal amphipods and tanaids were similar at each site. Infauna exhibited a distinct seasonal cycle related to that of the primary producers whereas macrofauna showed no seasonal changes in abundance.Species composition of each community in this coastal antarctic region was comparable with that of similar habitats in other antarctic coastal areas, supporting the circumpolarity of antarctic marine communities.  相似文献

Thirteen species of fish have so far been caught in the inshore waters around the Vestfold Hills, including the Rauer Islands, in depths down to approximately 100 m. Species caught depend markedly on the type of fishing gear used, but three species are clearly dominant numerically. Pagothenia bernacchii is most abundant in the shallower (< 20 m deep) weedy and rocky habitats, while Chionodraco hamatus is dominant in the deeper (> 20 m deep) nearshore troughs and further offshore. Pagothenia borchgrevinki occupies the specialized habitat associated with sea ice and close-inshore areas, including fjords and Burton Lake. The species list from the Vestfold Hills area is similar to lists from comparable locations in East Antarctica except for the major difference that C. hamatus has not yet been recorded from such shallow waters at the other locations, while P. bernacchii and P. hansoni are much more abundant in water deeper than 20 m at those sites than at Davis.  相似文献

The Larsemann Hills are a series of rocky peninsulas and islands in Prydz Bay at 69° 24 S and 76° 20 E. There is about 2000 km2 of ice free land with well over 150 freshwater lakes spread evenly over the granite and gneiss hills. The nearshore islands were ice free by 9500 BP, while the present coastline was exposed by 4500 BP. A relatively steady rate of ice retreat is indicated, around 0.3 ma–1. The two freshwater lakes studied so far have evolved from oligotrophic, proglacial lagoons to fresh or brackish lakes affected by periodic influxes of salt water from sea spray and surges produced by glacial calving. The diatom assemblages increase in species diversity following marine incursion or influence. The major changes are therefore due to the postglacial recovery of sea level, rather than any intrinsic chemical evolution of the lake waters.  相似文献

Sediment samples from several locations in the southern part of the Vestfold Hills have been examined for their foraminiferid content. Those from Early Pliocene sediments of Marine Plain immediately east of Burton Lake contain little foraminiferid evidence of marine deposition. Those from mid-late Holocene sections in and near the lakes contain good open marine faunas of species now known to be living on the continental shelf west of Cape Darnley.Foraminiferid faunas characterized by calcareous forms are most common, the most prevalent dominated by Globocassidulina crassa. The faunas examined contrast markedly with those in the present Prydz Bay which is characterized by agglutinated forms. The results, in relation to planktonic faunas, conflict with an earlier record of a diverse fauna.  相似文献

A survey of the terrestrial tardigrades inhabiting growths of algae, lichens and mosses in the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica, was carried out at 11 and 35 sites during the austral summers of 1980 and 1982, respectively. In all, 24 species of plants were collected from which four genera and four species of Tardigrada were recovered. A key to the tardigrades of the area is presented. The distribution and associational patterns of the tardigrades are discussed in the context of other studies of antarctic Tardigrada.  相似文献

Euphausia crystallorophias is the dominant zooplankton species in the neritic seas of Antarctica, where it occurs in similar abundances to those of Euphausia superba in more offshore areas. Despite its great abundance and probable ecological significance, few details are known of this species’ development, life history and ecology. This study found that E. crystallorophias spawned in Ellis Fjord from late November to early December and completed its larval development under the sea ice during the Antarctic winter. The mean time for E. crystallorophias eggs to develop to furcilia stage VI was 235.5 days, which is virtually identical to the developmental time already reported in the laboratory, but almost twice that of E. superba. This slow development rate is likely to be due either to the low water temperatures (<0°C) in which E. crystallorophias lives, or to low levels of food being available over winter. Bivalves collected in Vestfold Hills during the 55th Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE, 2009?2010) are represented by five species. Four of them (Laternula elliptica, Thracia meridionalis, Adamussium colbecki, and Philobrya sublaevis) were collected in the sediments that filled the coastal lake terraces during the Holocene; these species are still abundant on the Antarctic shelf at present. Bivalves were found in eight samples, with L. elliptica shells and fragments thereof found in seven of those samples. The sample collected near Deep Lake had the most diverse species composition, as it contained all four species named above. Shells of named species widely occurring in present-day Antarctica were found high above sea level in the marine sediments of the oasis. This indicate to the similarity of the oasis habitats in the past and the recent marine conditions. Fragments of shells of the fifth (now extinct) species Ruthipecten tuftsensis were found in glacial–marine sediments of the Marine Plain dating back to the late Pleistocene. The present study of fossil bivalves from the late Cenozoic marine sediments in Vestfold Hills is the first of its kind in Russia.  相似文献

The effect of nutrient and water enhancement on the biodegradation of petroleum was tested in Antarctic mineral soils. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were applied in solution, with or without gum xanthan or plastic covers, to sites artificially contaminated with distillate. The effectiveness of these procedures was assessed by measuring changes in total petroleum hydrocarbons; heptadecane/pristane and octadecane/phytane ratios; in concentrations of major hydrocarbon components and in microbial numbers and activity.Significantly lower hydrocarbon concentrations were recorded after one year in soils treated with fertilizer solutions, but only in the surface 3 cm. These soils also showed lowered heptadecane/pristane and octadecane/ phytane ratios and had the highest levels of microbial activity relative to other plots. Soils treated with gum xanthan. or covered with plastic had the highest residual hydrocarbon levels. Both treatments inhibited evaporative loss of hydrocarbon, and there were indications that gum xanthan was utilized by the microbiota as an alternative carbon source to distillate. Higher temperatures were recordecd under the plastic but no stimulation of biodegradation was detected.Estimated numbers of metabolically active bacteria were in the range 107 to 108 g–1 dry weight of soil, with an estimated biomass of 0.03 to 0.26 mg g–1 soil. Estimated numbers of amoebae were in the range 106 to 107 g–1 soil (biomass of 2 to 4 mgg–1). The highest populations were recorded in fertilized, contaminated soils, the only soils where petroleum degradation was demonstrated.  相似文献

Summary A microbiological survey of 40 soils from contaminated and pristine localities of Mawson Base or the Vestfold Hills (Davis Base) is described. High microbial populations (from 106 to in excess of 109 cells g-1 dry soil) were associated with soil contaminated by man or animals, soil from beneath a moss bed, or soil from beneath translucent quartz pebbles and containing green algae. Lower microbial populations (generally between 104–106 cells g-1 soil) were associated with pristine soils lacking an identifiable primary producer. No correlation was evident between population density and soil particle size, moisture content, pH or salinity as determined by the electrical conductivity (E.C.) of soil suspensions, although relationships were evident between the components of the microflora and E.C. Microbial groups associated with low E.C. were chitinolytic bacteria, fungi and green algae; favoured by high E.C. were halotolerant bacteria. The microflora of uncontaminated soils appeared to be dominated by Gram-negative aerobic rods (68% of the total flora) with Moraxella, Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas being the most frequently isolated genera. The remaining microflora comprised Grampositive pleomorphic bacteria (mainly coryneforms), 13%; filamentous Gram-negative aerobic rods (morphologically akin to Bacillus species), 12%; and yeasts, 7%. Streptomyces was identified among the dominant microflora of only one soil. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria were never isolated, although their presence was indicated in 40% of the soils tested by acetylene-reduction assay. Anaerobes were not detected in any soil using dilutionplate techniques, but were occasionally detected by enrichment in semi-solid media. All of 242 isolates obtained at 10° incubation were able to grow at 15°, 3.3% failed to grow at 18° and a further 9.5% failed to grow at 25°. Of 304 isolates obtained on one-tenth strength Trypticase-Soy agar (0.05% nutrient concentration), 10% failed to grow on the full-strength medium. Soils from the vicinity of Mawson or Davis bases contained a variety of fungi (Cladosporium, Chrysosporium, Acremonium, Phoma, Aureobasidium and Trichoderma species being isolated) in contrast to pristine soils, from which only Verticillium was occasionally isolated.Abbreviations E.C. electrical conductivity - TSA Trypticase-Soy agar - m.S. milli Siemens  相似文献

The distributions of volatile fatty acids (C1–C5) (VFAs) and dissolved free amino acids (DFAAs) in Organic Lake, a shallow hypersaline meromictic lake in the Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica, were determined during the winter and spring of 1987. The concentrations of the two VFAs detected, formic and acetic acid, were low (<10 M) in the oxic upper waters of the lake, but increased dramatically (up to 250M) beneath the oxycline. The distribution of DFAAs was similar, with a total concentration of 280M in the anoxic water early in the study. The amino acids occurring at the highest concentrations were alanine, glutamic acid, leucine and valine. Total VFA concentrations in the anoxic zone increased during the study period, but the total amino acid concentration dropped significantly to 64 M by the end of the study. The high concentrations beneath the oxycline were probably the result of bacterial utilisation of these substrates that was slow due to the high salinity and low temperature of the lake water.  相似文献

The invertebrate fauna of many Antarctic ice-free areas, even those close to permanent research stations, can be poorly known. Here we describe some nematodes from freshwater and saline, marine-derived lakes of the Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica. The freshwater lakes contained the widespread East Antarctic endemic species, Plectus frigophilus Kirjanova, 1958. The saline lakes were inhabited by two recently described species, Halomonhystera halophila Andrássy, 2006 and Halomonhystera continentalis Andrássy, 2006, and by a new species described in this report, Hypodontolaimus antarcticus sp. n. Originally marine but now brackish Highway Lake contained a nematode fauna with both freshwater and marine-derived components. The nematode fauna of Antarctica now consists of 54 named species, 22 of which are found in East Antarctica.  相似文献

The compositions of carotenoids, chlorophylls and lipids at four depths in Ace Lake have been determined as a means of studying the vertical zonation of species in the lake and for comparison with the lipids found in the bottom sediments. The four major species of phytoplankton found in the lake were identified by electron microscopy. The most abundant phytoplankter was Pyramimonas gelidicola McFadden (Chlorophyta, Prasinophyceae) which occurred in greatest numbers at 10 m, the base of the oxylimnion. The pigments and lipids at this depth were mainly derived from this alga. At 11 m (the top of the anoxylimnion) only traces of lipids and pigments attributable to P. gelidicola were found, indicating only limited settling of algal cells through to the anoxylimnion, at least in summer. The pigments at 11 m were dominated by bacteriochlorophylls c derived from green photosynthetic bacteria Chlorobium spp. These pigments were also abundant at 23 m suggesting the presence of intact bacterial cells which had settled out from higher in the water column. Major non-polar lipid classes in the sediments included sterols, alcohols, hydrocarbons and an unusual suite of very long-chain unsaturated ketones and esters which have not previously been reported from antarctic environments. Several novel compounds, not found previously in either sediments or organisms, are reported. These include tri- and tetra-unsaturated straight-chain C39 methyl ketones and C40 ethyl ketones and the methyl ester of a tetra-unsaturated straight-chain C36 fatty acid. The distributions of lipids in the sediment were markedly different from those in the water column indicating extensive bacterial degradation and recycling of labile lipids.  相似文献

Viruses in the plankton of freshwater and saline Antarctic lakes   总被引:7,自引:1,他引:7
1. Virus‐like particle (VLP) abundances in nine freshwater to saline lakes in the Vestfold Hills, Eastern Antarctica (68° S) were determined in December 1999. In the ultra‐oligotrophic to oligotrophic freshwater lakes, VLP abundances ranged from 1.01 to 3.28 × 106 mL–1 in the top 6 m of the water column. In the saline lakes the range was between 6.76 and 36.5 × 106 mL–1. The lowest value was found in meromictic Ace Lake and the highest value in hypersaline Lake Williams. Virus to bacteria ratios (VBR) were lowest in the freshwater lakes and highest in the saline lakes, with a maximum of 23.4 in the former and 50.3 in the latter. 2. A range of morphologies among VLP was observed, including phages with short (Podoviridae) and long tails, icosahedric viruses of up to 300 nm and star‐like particles of about 80 nm diameter. 3. In these microbially dominated ecosystems there was no correlation between VLP and either bacterial numbers or chlorophyll a. There was a significant correlation between VLP abundances and dissolved organic carbon concentration (r=0.845, P < 0.01). 4. The data suggested that viruses probably attack a spectrum of bacteria and protozoan species. Virus‐like particle numbers in the freshwater lakes were lower than values reported for lower latitude systems. Those in the saline lakes were comparable with abundances reported from other Antarctic lakes, and were higher than most values published for lower latitude lakes and many marine systems. Across the salinity spectrum from freshwater through brackish to hypersaline, VLP concentrations increased roughly in relation to increasing trophy. 5. Given that Antarctic lakes have a plankton almost entirely made up of bacteria and protists, and that VLP abundances are high, it is likely that viruses play a pivotal role in carbon cycling in these extreme ecosystems.  相似文献

Populations of the cladoceran Daphniopsis studeri Rühe in freshwater and brackish lakes of eastern Antarctica have been thought to consist solely of females that reproduce parthenogenetically by the production of ameiotic subitaneous eggs. This note reports the presence of male D. studeri and the production of ephippial (sexual) eggs in a number of lakes of the Vestfold and Larsemann Hills, which indicate the possibility of sexual reproduction within these populations. The biogeography of Antarctic lacustrine diatoms is incompletely known due in part to the absence of information from some important ice-free regions. In the first detailed study of the diatoms of the Bunger Hills, 29 species were identified in near-edge microbial mats of lakes ranging in salinity from fresh to 77‰. Most of the species present had previously been recorded in other East Antarctic coastal oases. The distribution and relative abundance of diatoms within the Bunger Hills were strongly influenced by salinity, but other factors, notably the characteristics of lakes in the immediate area of a particular lake, also played important roles.  相似文献

Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems are briefly described, with emphasis on Signy Island in the maritime antarctic region, and the McMurdo oasis, southern Victoria Land, and Vestfold Hills in the continental antarctic region. As the largest and best known coastal ice-free oasis, the Vestfold Hills contain excellent examples of terrestrial sublithic, epilithic, chasmoendolithic, epiphytic and terricolous algal communities, as well as epilithic, endolithic, and epiphytic lichen communities, and moss communities. Many of the numerous lakes support dense communities of aquatic algae.  相似文献

Blood and cloacal swabs were collected from 1073 Adelie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) in 13 separate colonies near Davis in the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica. Three paramyxoviruses, distinct from Newcastle disease virus, were isolated from cloacal swabs obtained from penguins at three widely separated colonies. These isolates, together with others obtained from penguins in other areas of Antarctica, suggest that such viruses are widespread in antarctic penguins. Their significance in the ecology of antarctic penguins has not been determined. No evidence of infection with Newcastle disease virus or avian influenza virus was obtained during the survey.  相似文献
