WINTER FEEDING ECOLOGY OF WIGEON ANAS PENELOPE AT THE OUSE WASHES, ENGLAND   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Investigations on the feeding ecology of Wigeon were carried out in winter 1978–79 at the species' most important inland wintering habitat in Britain. The study area included 287 ha of grassland, about one-sixth of the Washes, which is grazed by cattle and sheep until late autumn. In winter the area is partly or fully flooded. The number of Wigeon increased to 11 200 in January but cold weather in February, with snow and frozen flood water, forced the birds to leave, only 600 staying in the reserve. In March up to 4000 birds were again present. The distribution of the population within the refuge depends on whether the habitat is dry pasture with only a few ponds, partly flooded, fully flooded or covered with snow and frozen flood water. Under dry or slightly wet conditions 98% of the Wigeon were grazing (October to January), while under partly flooded conditions (February and March) 42%, fed on water. With increasing water depth, upending was used by 13%, while 45% of the population moved to the barrier banks, grazing there in March. The feeding method can change within a few hours with increasing water depth. The diurnal activity pattern varies during the wintering period. A lower percentage of morning feeding occurred after flights back from feeding outside the refuge and under frozen conditions. The feeding activity was higher at mid-day with a slight decrease towards dusk. The average diurnal feeding activity was 71% (October to April), with a maximum of 90% in November. Wigeon feed diurnally and nocturnally. During a 24 h period in March they were foraging for 15 h 40 min; by day 81% of the time was spent feeding, while at night only 48%. Standing crop measurements showed that the biomass of green vegetation declined significantly outside enclosures due to Wigeon usage. Pasture land should be grazed at different intensities by cattle and sheep before the arrival of the ducks. Inland reserves should include such pasture together with some standing water where the birds are undisturbed. The use of inland pastures can compensate for the loss of coastal habitats.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of Wigeon wintering in the vicinity of Bridgwater Bay National Nature Reserve is described. The birds roost on mudflats in the Bay during the day and feed, mainly at night, on saltings and wet pastures in the surrounding area. Their food, ascertained from gut analyses, consists largely of grass leaves; with roots, stolons, bulbils and seeds of secondary importance. Analyses including gizzard contents much exaggerated the importance of seeds because they are retained in the gizzard for longer than softer items.
An investigation of Wigeon feeding behaviour and food preferences on salting pasture is described, using the density of the birds' droppings on different vegetation zones to assess usage, and faecal analysis to determine the composition of the selected diet. The technique of faecal analysis is discussed in relation to feeding studies on grazing wildfowl.
Disturbance is a very important factor affecting the availability of feeding habitat, and this can mask the birds' food preferences. Early in the winter, Wigeon select Puccinellia maritima in preference to Agrostis stolonifera and Festuca rubra. They do this initially by selecting the broad zone in which they feed, by selecting feeding sites within zones, and particular plant species from a mixed sward. The birds are more selective when feeding in less preferred zones. The mechanisms and reasons for food selection are discussed in relation to characteristics of the habitat and of the plants. It is concluded that the nutritional value of the plants is important in determining the birds' preference, but that other factors also play a part.
Wigeon are flexible in their feeding habits and are increasingly found on inland habitats. They are adaptable in using new roosts, and in modifying their behaviour in response to changes in food supply and changes in disturbance pressures.  相似文献

There are almost no long-term demographic monitoring programmes of commoner waterbird species, yet such data are fundamental to our understanding of drivers of population change. In the present study, we present annual age and sex ratios in samples of shot duck wings forwarded on a voluntary basis by hunters throughout Denmark from 1982 to 2010 for eight common quarry species. Wigeon, Shoveler, Pintail and Goldeneye showed statistically significant declines in the proportions of young birds in the samples, but only Wigeon showed a statistically significant decline in the proportion of females in the adult sample over this period. Amongst Wigeon, the proportions of first winter birds and females were lower amongst the sample shot over decoys compared with those shot without decoys, suggesting these two shooting methods differentially select for young birds and females. However, the slopes of declines in these proportions shot with and without decoys over time did not differ. We found no correlations between North Atlantic Oscillation index values and the proportions of young for any of the species or between May and June temperatures on the breeding areas of Wigeon and the proportions of young in samples derived the following winter. With the exception of Wigeon, little is known about how well the shot duck wing samples reflect the true ratios in the populations, and unravelling the error and bias associated with these samples remains a high future research priority. If long-term declines in age and sex ratio in the wing surveys reflect true trends in the Wigeon population as a whole, we have strong grounds for concern for this population, and effort should be invested in increased demographic surveillance to better understand the causes of these changes. We need improved methods to derive unbiased measures of annual breeding of our common duck species if we are to be better able to understand the population dynamics of these stocks and be effective in their management. In the meantime, the Danish wing survey represents a unique time series of reproductive success for many common migratory duck species and must be maintained and further exploited.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   Studies of the dynamics of carcass components are critical to understanding survival and reproduction in waterfowl. Here, we examined the influence of sex, age, and season on the carcass composition of American Wigeon ( Anas americana ) in the Southern High Plains (SHP) of Texas during the migration and wintering periods. Wigeon ( N = 621) were collected from late fall through early spring, and carcass components (lipid, protein, and mineral) were estimated for each bird. Overall, carcass mass and lipids increased from autumn to early or midwinter and declined thereafter. However, over-winter changes in carcass reserves differed among sex and age groups. Wigeon of different sex and age groups maintained lipid and protein reserves to different degrees and used those reserves through the winter at different rates. The lack of premigratory fattening suggests that wigeon in the SHP must obtain most of the resources necessary for reproduction en route to breeding grounds, and highlights the importance of suitable stopover locations on their migratory routes. Changes in mean structural size of wigeon sampled during the nonbreeding season, in conjunction with genetic data, suggest that the wintering population in the SHP was composed of birds from several breeding populations. Our research will aid migratory bird biologists in determining how wigeon that differ in sex and age meet their over-winter resource needs, and in evaluating the responses of wigeon to habitat conservation and management efforts.  相似文献

The overwintering conditions of northern plants are expected to change substantially due to global warming. For perennial plants, winter warming may increase the risk of frost damage if the plants start dehardening prematurely. On the other hand, evergreen plants may remain photosynthetically active and thereby benefit from milder winters. The positive and negative effects of mild winters on annual plants remain, however, largely unknown. We postulated that summer annuals may be susceptible to frost damage if the seeds germinate during a mild spell in winter. Winter annuals may utilize a warm period for photosynthesis. These questions were addressed in two consecutive experiments in which pot-grown individuals of Thlaspi arvense that overwintered in the field were exposed to an elevated temperature for 8 days in growth chambers in mid-winter. No premature germination was observed in summer annuals. However, in accordance with our hypothesis, winter annuals started photosynthesising very rapidly upon exposure to elevated temperature. The winter warming treatment affected neither the total number of seeds produced nor the mean seed weight. These seeds, possessing divergent parental overwintering histories, were used as starting material for the second experiment. Seeds originating from both summer and winter annual plants germinated both in the autumn and in the following spring. We observed a major parental effect associated with the winter warming treatment. The warm spell experienced by the mother plant (either as a winter annual rosette or as a summer annual seed) reduced the proportion of autumn germination in the next generation. Only 43% of the seeds of summer annuals possessing a parental warming history germinated before the winter, whereas the germination percentage of seeds with no previous winter warming history was 71%. In the case of seeds collected from winter annual plants, 4% of the seeds germinated in autumn if the mother plants experienced the warming treatment during the previous winter, whereas the corresponding value was 37% if the mother plants did not experience warming. Our results show that summer and winter annual individuals show diverse responses to warm spells in winter. Since the responses are not limited only to the generation that actually experiences the warm spell, but also appear in their offspring, long-term studies consisting of several generations are called for.  相似文献

We compared age and sex ratios among Eurasian Wigeon Anas penelope derived from Danish field observations and hunter‐based shot samples throughout an entire winter. Sex ratios did not differ significantly between the two samples. Overall, first‐year males were more than three times more likely to be represented than adult males in the hunter sample compared with field samples and were 7–20 times overrepresented in the hunting sample at the beginning of the season. These results confirm the need to account for such bias and its temporal variation when using the results of hunting surveys to model population parameters. Hunter‐shot age ratios may provide a long‐term measure of reproductive success of dabbling duck flyway populations given an understanding of such bias.  相似文献

The zonation of non-breeding waterbirds along the Schelde estuary (The Netherlands–Belgium), one of the longest estuaries in NW-Europe with still a complete salinity gradient, including a large freshwater tidal area, was described. Numbers of birds were counted monthly over the period October 1991 to June 1997. Highest numbers of waterbirds were observed in late autumn and winter, with annual peak numbers ranging between 150,000 and 235,000 individuals for the whole estuary. Based on a multivariate analysis different waterbird communities were observed along the salinity gradient. The polyhaline areas of the estuary were numerically dominated by the waders Oystercatcher and Dunlin. Due to the presence of a large brackish marsh in the mesohaline zone, the waterbird community in this area was dominated by the herbivores Wigeon and Greylag Goose. In the oligohaline and freshwater tidal areas, the waterbird community was dominated by duck species, with Teal and Mallard being the most important. The international importance of the Schelde estuary for waterbirds was evidenced by the fact that for 21 waterbird species the 1% level criterion, according to the Ramsar convention, was exceeded. The relation of the observed diversity and community patterns with the functional and habitat diversity of the Schelde estuary as well as the effect of recent conservation measures to preserve this habitat were discussed.  相似文献

The flowering biology and pollination ecology ofLoranthus acaciae was studied at Hazeva in the northern Arava Valley in Israel. Flowers at anthesis had red anthers, a red stigma and a green corolla which turned red as a postfloral phenomenon. Their flowering period was approximately 10 months long (from mid-June until mid-April) during which time two main flowering patterns were distinguished. Some plants flowered twice a year, with separate summer and winter flowering periods; other plants flowered continuously, with two peaks, one in the summer and one in the winter. Several significant differences between summer and winter flowering and fruiting were found: (1) the summer flowering period was shorter than that of winter, (2) flowering synchrony between individual plants was lower in summer than in winter, (3) in summer the plants produced a larger proportion of female flowers, whereas in winter most of the plants produced a larger proportion of hermaphrodites, (4) in summer a limited number of plants produced smaller flowers while the majority produced normal-sized flowers, whereas in winter the entire population produced only normal-sized flowers, and (5) fruit set percentage was lower in summer than in winter.L. acaciae was found to be self-compatible, but, since it was not spontaneously self-pollinated, it showed high dependence on pollinator activity. In summer the flowers were visited by a wide spectrum of pollinators, both birds and insects, while in winter flowers were visited almost exclusively by the orange-tufted sunbird (Nectarinia osea osea, Nectariniidae). These seasonal changes in flowering characteristics and pollinator activity could explain why reproductive success is higher in winter than in summer.  相似文献

Ceratophyllum demersum L. remained physiologically active beneath ice of a southeastern Michigan lake. The effect of seasonally low photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and cold but nonfreezing temperature on whole-plant physiology was studied. Net photosynthesis was measured at six temperatures and 12 PPFDs. Net photosynthesis, soluble protein concentration, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) protein concentration, and Rubisco activity of winter plants were 32, 31, 33, and 70% lower, respectively, than those of plants collected in the summer. Optimum temperatures for net photosynthesis of winter and summer plants were 5 and 30[deg]C, respectively. Dark respiration of winter plants was up to 313% greater than that of summer plants. Reduced Rubisco activity and increased dark respiration interacted to reduce net photosynthesis. Interaction of reduced net photosynthesis and increased dark respiration increased CO2 and light compensation points and the light saturation point of winter plants. Growth of C. demersum was limited by the ambient phosphorus concentration of lake water during summer. Apical stem segments of winter-collected plants had 54 and 35% more phosphorus and nitrogen, respectively, than summer-collected plants. Physiologically active perennation beneath ice enabled C. demersum to accumulate phosphorus during the winter when it was most abundant. Partial uncoupling of phosphorus acquisition from utilization may reduce phosphorus limitation upon growth during the summer when phosphorus concentration is seasonally the lowest.  相似文献

This is the first record of seed transmission of turnip yellow mosaic virus (TYMV) in oilseed and turnip rapes. The seed transmission of TYMV in a naturally infected winter turnip rape (Brassica napus var. silvestris) cultivar Perko PVH was investigated. By ELISA 1.6%, 3.2% and 8.3% seed transmission of the virus was found in seed of plants from three localities. The proportion of infected seeds produced by artificially infected plants of winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus ssp. oleifera) and winter turnip rape cultivars was determined. The virus transmission rate, expressed as the proportion of virus-infected plants which germinated from the seed was for the oilseed rape cvs Jet Neuf 0.1%, Solida 0.4%, Silesia 0.8%, Darmor 1.2%, SL-507 0.2%, SL-509 0.0% and for the winter turnip rape cv. Perko 1.5%. ELISA cannot be used in direct tests on bulk seed lots to estimate proportion of infected seed, but must be used on germinated seedlings.  相似文献

Sixty-four aerial surveys were flown during cold, winter weather between December 1982 and February 1772 to provide an index of trends in abundance of the Florida manatee ( Trichechus manatus latirostris )around five Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) plants. The surveys documented high winter use of warm-water discharges at four of the plants (Canaveral, Riviera. Port Everglades, and Fort Myers). The total number of manatees sighted at the five primary plants surveyed during a single survey ranged from 6 to 765 manatees (= 330 ± 45 manatees per survey): thus, up to 41% of the total Florida manatee minimum population of 1.850 animals may be found on cold days at FPL plants. The number of calves sighted at the plants during winter has decreased; similarly, for three consecutive years (winter 1989–1970 through winter 1991–1992), the percentage of the manatees that are calves sighted at the plants has decreased. Although data from the surveys of FPL plants do not necessarily reflect what may be happening with manatees located elsewhere in Florida, a possible reduction in calf numbers, coupled with increasing numbers of dead calves being documented by scientists involved in manatee carcass salvage work, is cause for concern in this slow-reproducing, endangered species.  相似文献

The present study was conducted in the hill station of G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Ranichauri, Uttarakhand, which is known for its diversity in medicinal and aromatic plants. The plant geranium, also known as rose or lemon geranium is highly valued for its essential oil which is used in the cosmetic and preferring industries. The plant suffers due to stem and root rot both during summer and winter seasons. In the present study, geranium plants showed maximum stem rot incidence (60.55%) and plant mortality (17.20%) during the winter season, whereas in summer the crops showed maximum root rot and wilt complex incidence (38.33%) with plant mortality up to (12.22%). The average stem rot mortality was comparatively low (16–20%) in summer but increased to 18–26% in winter crop. Several phenolic acids such as as tannic, gallic, caffeic, ferulic and benzoic were detected by using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in variable amounts in these plants. The disease intensity varied from 97.77 to 92.46% from season to season. The significance of the phenolic compounds is discussed in relation to disease prevalence.  相似文献

2004年1~3月在小兴安岭通河林区,使用粪便显微组织学分析方法并结合野外食痕调查,对斑羚(Naemorhedus goral)的冬季食性进行了分析研究。结果表明,斑羚冬季主要以枯草、落叶和当年生枝条为食,共取食20属,22种植物。通过频率转换分析发现,莎草科的羊胡子苔草(Carex callitrichos)和杜鹃花科的兴安杜鹃(Rhododendron dauricum)是其冬季的大宗食物,占食物的百分比分别为31.72%和18.14%。此外,斑羚冬季对苔藓、杨柳科和木犀科植物的取食频次也较高,其百分比分别为7.30%、6.87%和5.25%.  相似文献

Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) is a high quality forage and turf grass mainly due to its excellent nutritive values and rapid establishment rate. However, this species has limited ability to perform in harsh winter climates. Though winter hardiness is a complex trait, it is commonly agreed that frost tolerance (FT) is its main component. Species growing in temperate regions can acquire FT through exposure to low, non-lethal temperatures, a phenomenon known as cold acclimation (CA). The research on molecular basis of FT has been performed on the model plants, but they are not well adapted to extreme winter climates. Thus, the mechanisms of cell response to low temperature in winter crops and agronomically important perennial grasses have yet to be revealed. Here, two L. perenne plants with contrasting levels of FT, high frost tolerant (HFT) and low frost tolerant (LFT) plants, were selected for comparative proteomic research. The work focused on analyses of leaf protein accumulation before and after 2, 8, 26 h, and 3, 5, 7, 14 and 21 days of CA, using a high-throughput two-dimensional electrophoresis, and on the identification of proteins which were accumulated differentially between the selected plants by the application of mass spectrometry (MS). Analyses of 580 protein profiles revealed a total of 42 (7.2%) spots that showed at a minimum of 1.5-fold differences in protein abundance, at a minimum of at one time point of CA between HFT and LFT genotypes. It was shown that significant differences in profiles of protein accumulation between the analyzed plants appeared most often on the 5th (18 proteins) and the 7th (19 proteins) day of CA. The proteins derived from 35 (83.3%) spots were successfully identified by the use of MS and chloroplast proteins were shown to be the major group selected as differentially accumulated during CA. The functions of the identified proteins and their probable influence on the level of FT in L. perenne are discussed.  相似文献

Populations of winter barley were sown in autumn in large tubsof soil to half of which additional phosphate was supplied.Half the plants of each phosphate treatment were infected withpowdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis D.C. f. sp. hordei Marchal)and all plants were transferred to the-field. Infection inducedextensive leaf injury during mid-winter in plants at low phosphate,but injury was greatly reduced in the high soil phosphate treatment.The extent of winter injury had a marked effect on the increasein leaf area in spring, and the accumulation of plant d. wtwas positively correlated with the percentage of total leafarea remaining undamaged at the end of winter. This, in turn,was strongly influenced by the interaction between powdery mildewand soil phosphate. High soil phosphate may act as a ‘buffer’to the effects of infection, minimizing the combined effectsof infection and abiotic stresses suffered by plants in winter. The Schelde estuary is an important wintering area and stop-over place for waders and waterfowl using the East Atlantic fly-way. The port of Antwerp is situated in the Lower Zeeschelde, the transition area between the brackish- and freshwater tidal part. Three intertidal areas in this zone (Groot Buitenschoor, Galgenschoor and Schor Ouden Doel) are protected under several international and national legislations. In this study long-term datasets (1982–1998) on water birds in these intertidal areas were analysed and attempts were made to assess the impact of two container terminals, constructed during the covered period. Overall abundance of water birds in the study area did not show any significant trends. Looking at individual areas, maxima and winter means on the Galgenschoor and Groot Buitenschoor were very variable but the peak seasons levelled out with time. On the Schor Ouden Doel, where hunting was banned, maximal numbers increased by a factor of four between 1985 and 1990, mainly due to an increase in Greylag Goose numbers. The trophic composition of the bird populations showed major shifts. Initially, species compositions in winter differed considerably between the three areas, but they became more similar during the study period. The results suggest that the area became more important as wintering and resting place for herbivores such as Greylag Goose and Wigeon while its function as feeding ground and stop-over site for migrating benthivorous birds became relatively less important, especially on the right bank. The water bird populations in the study area varied greatly with the geographic and regional trends for the different species and were influenced by winter severity but no direct proof of impacts from the container terminals could be established. Nearly every season the international 1 level was exceeded by one or more species, but the species of international importance changed with time. National and international protection measures are valuable but insufficient tools for the conservation of these estuarine habitats. A more comprehensive conservation strategy is proposed.  相似文献

Light leaf spot (Pyrenopeziza brassicae) was assessed as % plants with light leaf spot, % leaves with light leaf spot or % leaf area with light leaf spot in winter oilseed rape field experiments done at different sites (Rothamsted, Hertfordshire; Boxworth, Cambridgeshire; near Aberdeen, Scotland), with different cultivars (e.g. Bristol and Capitol), different fungicide treatments, on plants sampled at different dates. Regression analyses on data from these experiments showed that there were consistently good relationships between % leaves with light leaf spot and % plants with light leaf spot for plants sampled during the autumn and winter, until the % plants with light leaf spot approached 100%. The slopes and positions of regression lines were sometimes affected by cultivar, fungicide treatment or sampling date, but not by site. The relationship between % leaf area with light leaf spot (square root-transformed) and % leaves with light leaf spot was less consistent than that between % leaves with light leaf spot and % plants with light leaf spot and was sometimes affected by cultivar, fungicide treatment or sampling date but not by site. The relationship between % leaf area with light leaf spot (square root-transformed) and % plants with light leaf spot was also inconsistent and was sometimes affected by cultivar, fungicide treatment, sampling date and site.  相似文献

Flowering and fruiting were assessed on 14 populations of the grasstree, Xanthorrhoea preissii Endl., occurring in the Darling Range near Perth, Western Australia. Independent of site, season of burn or year of flowering, there was a strong relationship between plant height, which varied from 0.1 to over 2 m, and the incidence of postfire flowering, which varied from 1% (winter burn) to 75% (summer burn) of grasstrees present. There was no relationship between inflorescence dimensions, or flower or fruit production on a spike basis, and plant size/age (height). When standardized for height, spring‐burnt populations produced 40% as many inflorescences as autumn‐burnt populations and 20% as many as summer‐burnt populations. Inflorescences produced by spring‐burnt plants were moderately smaller than those by summer–autumn‐burnt plants. Fruit density per spike in autumn‐burnt plants was 80% of that in spring–summer‐burnt plants. The net effect was an average of 70 000 fruits produced per 100 summer‐burnt plants, 22 000 in autumn‐burnt plants, and 14 000 in spring‐burnt plants. Ecophysiological explanations of these results and their implications for population dynamics have yet to be explored.  相似文献

本文采用粪便显微组织学分析技术,分析了呼伦贝尔草原黄羊与放牧绵羊冬季采食植物的种类组成和比例,探讨了黄羊与放牧家羊冬季对食物资源利用的关系。研究表明,黄羊与放牧家羊冬季采食的植物均以禾本科、豆科等草本植物为主,二者在冬季对食物资源利用的重叠性较大,相似性系数PS=0.789。  相似文献
