Assemblages of diving beetles (Dytiscidae) and mosquito immatures (Culicidae) were studied during 1987–1988 in 40 small, more or less temporary, snowmelt pools in spruce swamp forest and clearings at the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Larger pools were warmer than smaller ones, and clearing pools were warmer than forest pools. Temperature differences between pools remained high until late July. Twenty-one dytiscid species, representing three guilds, occurred in the pools, and individual pools had 1–13 species. Ten species occurred in both habitats. A few stenotopic species of boreal swamp forests had in clearing pools apparently been replaced by some species with a preference for more productive, often man-made habitats. Six Aedes species were collected in the clearing pools. Five of these were found in the forest pools, of which three had no mosquito larvae. Dytiscid assemblages in both habitats and culicid assemblages in clearing pools showed strong nested patterns.Abundance and species richness of both culicids and dytiscids were higher in clearing than in forest pools with an area >2 m2 after that the effects of pool area had been accounted for (MANCOVA). In both habitats, abundance and species richness of both culicids and dytiscids were strongly and positively correlated with a linear combination of pool area, depth and temperature (Canonical Correlation). Increasing drought frequency of pools had a negative, less significant effect on the biota. In the clearing, the abiotic correlations with abundance were somewhat weakened chiefly by the relatively low abundance values from the largest pool.Distribution and mean abundance of individual dytiscid species were positively related in the clearing pools. Flying dytiscids were trapped in the larger (1.6 m2), but not in the smaller (0.07 m2) artificial pools, and the immigration rate was markedly higher on clearings than in forest. Dug pools were colonized faster on clearings than in forest. Even the flightless Hydroporus melanarius colonized dug pools during the first year.  相似文献

Distribution among pools of six mosquito species and 23 predatory insect taxa were studied in temporary rain pools during the summer and fall season in Buenos Aires city. Both mosquito immatures and predators were disproportionally more abundant in pools with high flooded surface, depth, and duration. Mosquito immatures differed in their habitat use with respect to predators. Among mosquitoes, Ochlerotatus albifasciatus showed a different pattern when compared to the remaining culicids. More culicid and predatory insect taxa colonized the pools in those flooding events of longer duration. Ochlerotatus albifasciatus was the only mosquito species recorded during short duration events and the first one in colonizing the pools in long duration events. This species shared the pools mainly with early arriving adult predators. Three Culex species were recorded later and showed higher coexistence with most of the predatory taxa, mainly immatures of the genera Tropisternus, Rhantus, Liodessus, and Belostoma. A high heterogeneity between pools and seasons was observed. Multiple regression analyses showed a negative relationship of per capita change of Culex species with large-sized predators only in those cases where predators were collected in high abundances during the summer. No negative relationship of predators was detected in relation to per capita change and abundance of Ochlerotatus albifasciatus. Differences in duration of about two to three weeks seemed to significantly affect the abundance of both culicid and predatory taxa, suggesting that the urban pools analyzed in this study are on the extreme of suitable conditions for these aquatic insects.  相似文献

The WWF Oasis of Palo, 38 kms north of Rome, is one of the last remnants of the Mediterranean plain forest formerly covering the coastal areas of Latium. Within this preserved area, nine temporary waterbodies were periodically visited during 2001 to obtain information on their morphology, water cycle and faunal composition. In total, 25 crustacean species were listed and monthly changes in their abundance were recorded. Cladoceran species prevailed in all waterbodies (11 species, 7 genera, 2 families). Copepoda were represented by 8 species, 7 genera, 2 families. Ostracoda included 5 species, 5 genera, 3 families. Anostracans were recorded in only two pools and were represented by Chirocephalus diaphanus Prévost, 1803, the most common species in Italy. Chirocephalus kerkyrensis Pesta, 1936 usually occurring in the waterbodies of the Mediterranean maquis, was missing. Species richness was maximal in late autumn and winter, and correlated positively with pond duration, flooded area, water level and number of rainpools. The species most frequently recorded were Chydorus sphaericus O.F. Müller, 1785 and Daphnia curvirostris Eylmann, 1887 for Cladocera, Megacyclops viridis Jurine, 1820, Diacyclops bicuspidatus odessanus Shmankevitch, 1875 and Mixodiaptomus kupelwieseri Brehm, 1907 for Copepoda, Cyclocypris ovum Jurine, 1820 and Eucypris virens Jurine, 1820 for Ostracoda. Others, like Alona affinis Leydig, 1860, Ceriodaphnia pulchella Sars, 1862 (Cladocera), Macrocyclops albidus Jurine, 1820 (Copepoda), Herpetocypris reptans Baird, 1835 Fabaeformiscandona fabaeformis Fischer, 1854 (Ostracoda) were found in only one pool.  相似文献

Solar radiation, which influences temperature and hydroperiod, should strongly influence colonization, development rate, development strategies and survival in temporary pools. We assessed these hypotheses at two spatial microscales with varying microclimate. One scale, ca. 200 m, was opposing slopes of a canyon on MT Carmel, Israel, referred to as 'Evolution Canyon' (Nevo, 1995). Due primarily to differential solar radiation, the warmer and drier South-facing slope (SFS) supports a savanna-like open park forest while the cooler, moister North-facing slope (NFS) is heavily forested, primarily with live oak. Using artificial pools, we assessed how these close but contrasting environments may influence developmental plasticity in the frog, Hyla savignyi, and colonization of insects. As expected, hydroperiod was considerably longer on the NFS. Hyla tadpole development was significantly faster on the SFS, while size at metamorphosis was greater on the NFS. Insect species richness was higher in NFS pools. The most common species, Culex pipiens, oviposited significantly more in NFS pools than in SFS pools. In the second scale, we placed pools only meters apart, but varying in shade and thus maximum temperature at Haifa University Campus, MT Carmel. Species richness and maximum temperature among pools were not correlated during winter and early spring (cool to mild temperatures), but were strongly and negatively correlated during early summer (hot temperatures). Thermal tolerance in the laboratory of selected species matched their thermal spatial distribution in the field. These results indicate that temperature can play a strong role in affecting developmental strategies, species′ distributions and community structure in temporary pools over a very small spatial scale. The immature stages of Ochlerotatus albifasciatus develop in temporary pools. The present study aims at evaluating the seasonal dynamics of the aquatic stages of this mosquito, also analyzing the relationship among their presence and breeding success to some relevant climatic and environmental variables in the ephemeral rain pools of an urban park. Nineteen cohorts of O. albifasciatus that developed synchronously after rain events were recorded in all seasons. The proportions of mosquito-positive pools were significantly higher during the fall-winter period than in the spring-summer months (p < 0.001). The presence of this mosquito species was positively related to the amount of rain (p < 0.001), whereas negatively correlated to air temperature (p < 0.05) within a 5.2 to 29.7 degrees C range. The distribution of the number of cohorts per pool throughout the year was grouped (variance/mean: 3.96), indicating that these habitats were not equally suitable as breeding sites. The immature stages of O. albifasciatus were detected in pools belonging to all of the categories of surface area, depth, duration, vegetation cover, and insolation. However, the proportion of pools where immature mosquitoes were detected was positively and significantly related to surface, depth, duration, and vegetation cover. On the other hand, the proportion of mosquito-positive pools was higher at an intermediate insolation degree. Our results suggest that although preimaginal stages were present in all seasons, high temperatures may be unfavorable to larval development, and substrate vegetation may regulate water temperature. The positive relationship between the proportion of mosquito-positive pools and pool size and duration might reflect a strategy of O. albifasciatus to accomplish immature development.  相似文献

The study was conducted in a park of Buenos Aires City, where a total of 89 rain pools were sampled weekly for mosquito immature stages over a one-year period. The aim of the present paper was to investigate the seasonal dynamics of three Culex species breeding in temporary rain pools and to analyze the relationships of the presence of these species to pool dimensions, pool age, vegetation, and insolation degree. The three species showed differences in their seasonal patterns, Culex dolosus being present during the whole year, Culex pipiens mainly in the summer season, and Culex maxi almost exclusively during the fall. The variable explaining most of the variation among sampling dates in species composition was weekly mean temperature. A significant positive association was detected among mosquito species, as they were recorded together more frequently than expected by chance. The statistical analyses performed revealed significant positive relationships of all three mosquito species to increasing surface area, whereas no relationship to insolation degree was detected in the studied pools. Culex pipiens and Culex dolosus showed positive relationships to increasing vegetation cover, whereas the presence of Culex dolosus was also related to pool age.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of the predatory backswimmer, Anisops sardea, on oviposition habitat selection of mosquitoes and other dipterans, and on community structure in experimental pools. We predicted that those dipteran species whose larvae were shown to be highly vulnerable to predation by Anisops would avoid Anisops pools when choosing an oviposition site. We established the following treatments in plastic tubs: (1) Control (without Anisops); (2) Free Anisops (ten Anisops within pool but not caged); (3) Caged Anisops (ten Anisops in cage). The pools were open to colonization by insects. We added resting stages of crustaceans and first instar larvae of the mosquitoes Culiseta longiareolata and Culex laticinctus. Among the dipteran species, Culiseta longiareolata, Culex laticinctus, Chironomus riparius (Chironomidae) and Forcipomyia sp. (Ceratopogonidae), only Culisetalarvae were highly vulnerable to predation. As predicted, based on larval vulnerability, Culiseta, but not the other species, avoided Anisops pools when ovipositing. Free Anisops reduced taxon richness. This reduction resulted largely from the elimination of the cladoceran Ceriodaphniasp. and Culiseta in most free Anisops pools. Thus, Anisops sardea structures the community, both by a behavioral response of prey to its presence and by consumption of prey.  相似文献

We investigated the relationships between vegetation area, edge length, and mammals in the urban woods of Daejeon Metropolitan City, South Korea. The vegetation patches included in this study varied from 2.1 to 501.0?ha in size. Surveys were conducted monthly between February and October 2015, with a survey route measuring 1?km in length and 10?m width established in each forest patch. Field signs of 14 species of mammals were recorded in the 33 chosen forest patches over the course of the study period, and the number of species in each patch varied from 2 to 11. Mammal species richness was positively correlated with vegetation area, and field sign frequency was positively correlated with vegetation area and negatively correlated with edge length. The field sign frequencies of large moles Mogera robusta, Siberian chipmunks Tamias sibiricus, leopard cats Prionailurus bengalensis, Korean hares Lepus coreanus, water deer Hydropotes inermis, and wild boars Sus scrofa were positively correlated with vegetation area. Moreover, that of large moles, leopard cats, Korean hares, and water deer were negatively correlated with edge length. Remnant vegetation area and edge length are the primary determinants of mammal species richness and field sign frequency in urban woods, highlighting the importance of vegetation patch size for mammal conservation in fragmented urban landscapes.  相似文献

Temporary water bodies exhibit a high level of biodiversity,much of which is unique tothese habitats.Studies of microturbellarian community ecology in temporary pools are scarce,eventhough turbellarians are potentially important in organizing community structure.Moreover,therehas been virtually no documentation of microturbellarians from Israel.We examined the re-lationships between several pool properties (surface area,water depth,permanence and sedimentdepth)and microturbellarian species richness among 52 temporary pools at a single site.A total of17 taxa of microturbellarians were identi ed,of which 14 were determined to genus or species level.Richness was positively related with surface area and with maximal sediment depth,togetherexplaining 54%of the variance.In more intensive sampling of a subset of 18 pools,surface areawas the only signi cant predictor,explaining 76%of the variance.Community dissimilarity waspositively related with di erences in both surface area and permanence.We identi ed three cate-gories of pool size,each characterized by di erent turbellarian species:large pools were dominatedbyCastrada viridis andGieysztoria cuspidata ,intermediate pools byDochmiotrema limicola ,and many of the small pools byGieysztoria ornata andOlisthanella obtusa .Large pools contributed themost to regional diversity,with 11 of the 17 observed taxa.However,some species were unique tosmall pools.Thus,in order to maintain maximal regional diversity of temporary water turbellar-ians,it is important to conserve habitats containing pools of various sizes.  相似文献

Diversity of terrestrial isopods across habitats and altitude was studied in the National Park of Chambi (central Tunisia). Samples were collected over five years in seven sites (S1–S7), within an altitudinal range from 750 to 1,500 m a.s.l. Twelve species belonging to five families were identified, with one endemic species (Porcellio djahizi) to this area, and three species were present in all sites (P. djahizi, Leptotrichus panzerii and Armadillidium tunisiense). Agnaridae represented by Hemilepistus reaumurii species was the most abundant family (58.77%) and found in only one site. Our results showed differences in species richness between sites. Indeed, S2 and S3 (900 and 1,050 m) showed the highest species richness with 11 species each. This result validates the hypothesis of mid‐elevational richness peak and contradicts the theory of large sampling regimes in determining the relationship between species richness and elevation. Terrestrial isopod species richness in the Chambi Mountain tends to decrease with altitude: 11 species in S2 and S3 to four species in S7. The highest Shannon–Wiener diversity index value was observed in S2 (H′ = 3.21 bits). Canonical correspondence analysis revealed that H. reaumurii was positively correlated with temperature whereas A. tunisiense and P. djahizi were the only species positively correlated with altitude.  相似文献

1. The factors that promote coexistence of global invaders and native species are poorly understood. The role of abiotic factors in determining the dominance of invasive species is also an area of increasing interest. Gambusia holbrooki (Eastern Mosquitofish) is an important global invader, displacing endemic fish and frogs on four continents. However, Gambusia co‐occurs with a similar‐sized fish (Hypseleotris spp.) in dynamic floodplain wetland pools of south‐eastern Australia. 2. We examined the relative abundance of Gambusia and Hypseleotris in regularly flooded and irregularly flooded pools to determine whether seasonal hydrological disturbance may be advantageous to the native species. We aimed to determine whether Gambusia and Hypseleotris populations respond differently to regular seasonal flooding and whether this could reduce the ability of Gambusia to dominate numerically the native species. We tested this by sampling fish bi‐monthly in 15 floodplain pools over 2.5 years. 3. We found that the relative abundance of the two species differed between regularly and irregularly flooded pools, while both pool types persisted (over a period of a year). Hypseleotris were numerically dominant in regularly flooded pools from spring through to autumn, following a major spring flood. In contrast, Gambusia were more abundant than Hypseleotris in irregularly flooded pools from summer until pools dried completely. 4. Due to the higher reproductive response of Hypseleotris to a spring flood, and the timing of its breeding season, we suggest that Hypseleotris may have a reproductive advantage over Gambusia during productive post‐flood spring/summer conditions. While the abundances of both species were usually within a similar range, variation in hydrologic habitats and the inter‐play between life‐history traits and hydrologic disturbance may nonetheless give the native fish an edge.  相似文献

Aim To test whether species richness of Sphagnum mosses on islands in a land uplift archipelago is related to island age, area or connectivity, and whether the frequency of different species can be predicted by their life history and autecology. Location The northern Stockholm archipelago in the Baltic Sea, east‐central Sweden, with a current land uplift rate of 4.4 mm year?1. Methods We sampled 17 islands differing in area (0.55–55 ha), height (3.6–18 m, representing c. 800–4000 years of age) and distance from mainland (1.6–41 km). For each Sphagnum patch we measured area, height above sea level, horizontal distance from the shore and shading from vascular plants. Factors affecting island species richness, species frequency and habitats on the islands were tested by stepwise regressions. Species frequency was tested on nine life history and autecological variables, including estimated abundance and spore output on the mainland, habitat preference and distribution. Results We recorded 500 patches of 19 Sphagnum species, distributed in 83 rock pools on 14 islands. Island species richness correlated positively with island area and with degree of shelter by surrounding islands, while distance from the mainland, connectivity, height or age did not add to the model. Species frequency (number of colonized islands and rock pools) was mainly predicted by spore output on the mainland and by habitat preference (swamp forest species were more frequent than others), while spore size, for example, did not add to the model. Species differed in mean height above and horizontal distance from the shore, area of occupied rock pools and in the degree of shading of patches. The mean horizontal distance from the shore and the area of occupied rock pools correlated positively with the normal growth position above the water table among species. Spore capsules were found in only 2% of patches, mostly in the bisexual Sphagnum fimbriatum. Main conclusions The presence of Sphagnum in the Stockholm archipelago seems to be governed by regional spore production and habitat demands. Sphagnum does not appear to be dispersal limited at distances up to 40 km and time spans of centuries. Species with a high regional spore output have had a higher colonization rate, which, together with the rarity of spore capsules on the islands, indicate the mainland as a source for colonization rather than dispersal among islands. Swamp forest species seem more tolerant to the island conditions (summer droughts and some salt spray) than open mire species. The different distances from the sea occupied by the species indicate a slow, continuous succession and species replacement towards the island interior as islands are being uplifted and thus expand in area. This partly explains why larger islands harbour more species. Our results thus support some of the island biogeographical theories related to the species–area relationship.  相似文献

Disturbance alters the structure and dynamics of communities. Here, we examined the effects of seasonal flooding on the lizard community structure by comparing two adjacent habitats, a seasonally flooded and a non‐flooded forest, in a Cerrado–Amazon ecotone area, the Cantão State Park, Tocantins state, Brazil. Despite the strong potential impact of seasonal flooding, the only significant environmental difference detected was more termite mounds in non‐flooded forests. Species richness was significantly higher in the non‐flooded forest. Colobosaura modesta, followed by Mabuya frenata and Anolis brasiliensis, were the only species that differed in number of captures between sites. Colobosaura modesta was exclusively found in the non‐flooded forest, while Anolis brasiliensis was the most captured in the flooded forest. Mabuya frenata is indicated as an indicator species in the flooded forest, and Colobosaura modesta in the non‐flooded forest. We found a significant association between lizard abundances and habitat characteristics, with flooding, canopy cover, and logs being the best predictors. A phylogenetic community structure analysis indicated a lack of structure in both lizard assemblages. Overall, we show that seasonal flooding can strongly impact species richness and species occurrence patterns, but not phylogenetic community structure. The Amazon–Cerrado transition is undergoing pronounced transformations due to deforestation and climate change. Despite being species‐poor compared with central areas in Amazon or Cerrado, this ecotone harbors species with important adaptations that could hold the key to persistence in human‐disturbed landscapes or during periods of climate change.  相似文献

The proposed Mbaéré-Bodingué National Park (872km2) is located in the southwestern part of the Central African Republic and consists of terra firma rain forests and seasonally flooded forests. We assessed the conservation significance of this site using data on wildlife and habitat conditions collected during a comprehensive primate survey. Scores were attributed to a system of variables and sub-variables to assess the conservation value of the proposed park at the national level. We identified a total of 10 diurnal primate species (eight monkeys, two apes) and flooded forests were considered as a key habitat for primates as they hold a greater number of species than terra firma forests. We recorded the presence of 12 mammal species listed under the 2000 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, including four classified as Endangered (two Primates, one Proboscidae and one Insectivora). We found that the conservation value of the proposed park ranked second out of the 15 existing protected areas of the country. Primate abundance was found to be generally higher than in the nearby Dzanga-Ndoki National Park (the sole other park located in the same vegetation unit), in particular for the species occurring in flooded forests. This highlights the fact that the proposed Mbaéré-Bodingué National Park is an important area for the conservation of species associated with flooded forests, a habitat which is currently under-represented in the national protected area system. Poaching pressure was identified as the main current threat to the integrity of the proposed park.  相似文献

Urban habitats harbour considerable biological diversity. Ecologists have developed methods to select which habitats should be conserved. The Ecological value, a method based on vegetation, has been created for the urban habitats of Montreal (Quebec, Canada). The main objective of our study was to determine if this method was relevant to assess carabid diversity of Mount Royal Park. This index is calculated using five criteria: uniqueness, representativeness, degree of succession, richness and rarity of the flora, each of which can influence communities of insects. Ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) were selected because of their success as biological indicators. Despite sampling difficulties, our results demonstrate clearly that the Ecological value method does not represent the high carabid richness of urban open habitats (tall grasses) and their specialised native carabid species. Within forests we found nonetheless that the ecological value index has a significant positive relationship with native carabid abundance. Moreover, maturity and structure of urban forests were positively correlated with carabid abundance and richness. Some urban vegetation characteristics have been shown to influence entomological diversity, but the relevance of using a global floral index to encompass the carabid community seems limited.  相似文献

Bolboschoenus maritimus, a clonal species, is locally invasive in Mediterranean temporary pools where it threatens endangered rare plant species such as Isoetes setacea. The combination of management modifications (grazing) and of the progressive accumulation of fine sediments in the pools contributed to the establishment of competitive perennial plants such as B. maritimus. The competitive advantage of B. maritimus on I. setacea has been studied in controlled conditions. The goal of this experiment was to assess the role of environmental conditions in the output of the competition between Bolboschoenus and Isoetes, notably hydrology and soil richness. For this purpose, Isoetes was cultivated alone (three individuals/pot) and with Bolboschoenus (three individuals of both species). The experiment was run with five replicates on six types of sediment (gradient of richness in sand/silt/clay) combined with three hydrological treatments (flooded, wet. and dry). The competitive advantage of Bolboschoenus was measured as the ratio of the production of Isoetes in mixture versus monoculture. The results showed that Isoetes was always outcompeted by Bolboschoenus. However, the competitive advantage of Bolboschoenus on Isoetes, was more related to hydrology than to soil richness. The competitive advantage of Bolboschoenus was very high in wet and flooded conditions and very low in dry conditions. This situation may lead to the extinction, medium-term, of the populations of I. setacea. The introduction of ovine grazing or of cut back practices in temporary pools could reduce the B. maritimus biomass and help toward the conservation of I. setacea populations. Guest editors: B. Effects of habitat fragmentation on the insect community of stinging nettle (Urtica dioica L.) were studied, using 32 natural nettle patches of different area and degree of isolation in an agricultural landscape. Habitat fragmentation reduced the species richness of Heteroptera, Auchenorrhyncha, and Coleoptera, and the abundance of populations. Habitat isolation and area reduction did not affect all insect species equally. Monophagous herbivores had a higher probability of absence from small patches than all (monophagous and polyphagous) herbivore species, and the percentage of monophagous herbivores increased with habitat area. Abundance and population variability of species were negatively correlated and could both be used as a predictor of the percentage of occupied habitats. Species richness of herbivores correlated (positively) with habitat area, while species richness of predators correlated (negatively) with habitat isolation. In logistic regressions, the probability of absence of monophagous herbivores from habitat patches could only be explained by habitat area (in 4 out of 10 species) and predator absence probability only by habitat isolation (in 3 out of 14 species). Presumably because of the instability of higher-trophic-level populations and dispersal limitation, predators were more affected by habitat isolation than herbivores, while they did not differ from herbivore populations with respect to abundance or variability. Mosquito borne diseases have remained a grave threat to human health and are posing a significant burden on health authorities around the globe. The understanding and insight of mosquito breeding habitats features is crucial for their effective management. Comprehensive larval surveys were carried out at 14 sites in Qatar. A total of 443 aquatic habitats were examined, among these 130 were found positive with Culex pipiens, Cx. quinquefasciatus, Cx. mattinglyi, Ochlerotatus dorsalis, Oc. caspius and Anopheles stephensi. The majority of positive breeding habitats were recorded in urban areas (67.6%), followed by livestock (13.8%), and least were in agriculture (10.7%). An. stephensi larvae were positively correlated with Cx. pipien, Cx. quinquefasciatus, and negatively with water salinity. Large and shaded habitats were the most preferred by An. stephensi. In addition, Cx. pipiens was positively associated with the turbidity and pH, and was negatively associated with vegetation and habitat size. A negative association of Cx. quinquefasciatus with dissolved oxygen, water temperature, and salinity, while positive with habitat surface area was observed. Oc. dorsalis was negatively correlated with pH, water temperature, depth, and habitat surface area, whereas salinity water was more preferable site for females to lay their eggs. These results demonstrate that environmental factors play a significant role in preference of both anopheline and culicine for oviposition, while their effective management must be developed as the most viable tool to minimize mosquito borne diseases.  相似文献
