The vacuum erection device (VED) is a nonsurgical alternative for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. This method is based on 2 phenomena:
  1. an erection-like state occurs when the penis is placed in a vacuum
  2. this state can be maintained by a constricting band placed around the base of the penis
The erection-like state thus obtained differs from a normal erection in the following ways:
  1. blood flow into the penis decreases
  2. penile skin temperature falls
  3. congestion of extra-corporeal penile tissues occurs
  4. the penis pivots at its base
  5. the ejaculate is trapped in the proximal urethra
About 30 to 60% of men who trie the device at home purchase it for continued use. The others are unable to achieve sufficient rigidity, experience side-effects or dislike the use of the device despite good result. About 60 to 80% of the men who purchased the device continue to use it regulary at short or middle term. The VED seems to have lesser drop-out rate than the self injection therapy. The most frequently encountered side-effects of the device are pain, petechiaes, bruising and ecchymosis.  相似文献

  1. Culture filtrates of heterotrophic bacteria were tested for their stimulatory effect on nitrification of three strains of Nitrobacter.
  2. Yeast extract-peptone solution, in which Pseudomonas fluorescens had grown, after removal of the cells was added to autotrophically growing cultures of Nitrobacter agilis; it caused a stimulated nitrite oxidation and growth of Nitrobacter agilis.
  3. The degree of stimulation depended on: a) the proportion of the culture filtrate to the autotrophic medium; b) the composition of the complex medium in which Pseudomonas fluorescens had been grown; c) the time the heterotrophic bacterium had been grown in the complex medium.
  4. The stimulatory effect was highest with Nitrobacter agilis, less with Nitrobacter winogradskyi and negligible with Nitrobacter K 4.
  5. It was possible to adapt nitrifying cells of Nitrobacter agilis to higher concentrations of yeast extract and peptone. After the nitrite had been completely oxidized the cell-N still increased up to 30% before growth stopped.

  1. Growth of the floating aquatic weed, Salvinia, in sterile culture was exponential for at least 2 weeks under standardized conditions.
  2. Increase in light intensity or in CO2 resulted in increases in growth rate, but did not extend the exponential period of growth.
  3. This aquatic plant, like many others, discriminates against calcium relative to strontium.
  4. In culture Salvinia exhibited luxury consumption of N and P.
  5. Because of high C/N ratios, Salvinia may not be a favorable source of animal food, but might be useful in nutrient removal schemes.
  6. In sterile culture, S. molesta produced fewer leaves than S. minima, but maintained a significant increase in leaf area and dry weight. This may be correlated with the ability of the first species to rapidly spread over tropical waterways.

  1. We are studying the neural basis of consummatory feeding behavior in Aplysia using intact, freely moving animals.
  2. Video records show that the timing of radula closure during the radula protraction-retraction cycle constitutes a major difference between ingestion (biting or swallowing) and rejection. During ingestion, the radula is closed as it retracts. During rejection, the radula is closed as it protracts.
  3. We observed two patterns of activity in nerves which are likely to mediate these radula movements. Patterns I and II are associated with ingestion and rejection, respectively, and are distinguished by the timing of radula nerve activity with respect to the onset of buccal nerve 2 activity.
  4. The association of ingestion with pattern I is maintained when the animal feeds on a polyethylene tube, the same food substrate used to elicit rejection responses. Under these conditions, pattern I is associated with either swallowing or no net tube movement.
  5. Most transitions from swallowing to rejection were preceded by one or more occurrences of pattern I in which there was no net tube movement, suggesting that these transitions can be predicted.
  6. Our data suggest that these two patterns can be used to distinguish ingestion from rejection.

  • Pollen‐pistil interactions are a fundamental process in the reproductive biology of angiosperms and play a particularly important role in maintaining incipient species that exist in sympatry. However, the majority of previous studies have focused on species with syncarpous gynoecia (fused carpels) and not those with apocarpous gynoecia (unfused carpels).
  • In the present study, we investigated the growth of conspecific pollen tubes compared to heterospecific pollen tubes in Sagittaria species, which have apocarpous gynoecia. We conducted controlled pollinations between S. pygmaea and S. trifolia and observed the growth of conspecific and heterospecific pollen tubes under a fluorescence microscope.
  • Heterospecific and conspecific pollen tubes arrived at locules within the ovaries near simultaneously. However, conspecific pollen tubes entered into the ovules directly, whereas heterospecific tubes passed through the carpel base and adjacent receptacle tissue, to ultimately fertilize other unfertilized ovules. This longer route taken by heterospecific pollen tubes therefore caused a delay in the time required to enter into the ovules. Furthermore, heterospecific pollen tubes displayed similar growth patterns at early and peak pollination. The growth pattern of heterospecific pollen tubes at late pollination was similar to that of conspecific pollen tubes at peak pollination.
  • Heterospecific and conspecific pollen tubes took different routes to fertilize ovules. A delayed entry of heterospecific pollen into ovules may be a novel mechanism of conspecific pollen advantage (CPA) for apocarpous species.

The roles of molybdenum and iron in the enzymes of the assimilatory nitrate-reducing system from Azotobacter chroococcum have been investigated.
  1. By adding 99Mo-molybdate to a cell culture of A. chroococcum with nitrate as the nitrogen source, it has been possible to inccrporate the radioactive metal into a purified preparation of the enzyme nitrare reductase.
  2. When 185W-tungstate was supplied to a culture medium lacking added molybdate, a 185W-labelled nitrate reductase preparation with negligible activity could be obtained. This in vivo incorporation of tungsten was competitively hindered by molybdenum.
  3. The cellular level of nitrite reductase activity gradually increased in response to the addition of increasing amounts of iron to the culture medium. Under the same conditions, the level of nitrate reductase activity was not affected.

EPR spectroscopy is a powerful tool to identify at a molecular level, the different steps of catalyst preparation, and of catalytic reactions:
  1. Deposition of paramagnetic transition metal ions onto a support is monitored, and the coordination sphere of the metallic center is characterized by EPR.
  2. The catalyst is also characterized after activation (thermal oxidation or reduction):
  • - the distribution among the different sites in zeolites can be determined;
  • - the dispersion of the active phase may be appreciated;
  • - the unsaturation degree of the active site may be evaluated using probe molecules such as water or13C enriched carbon monoxide.
    1. The catalytic mechanisms can be investigated by studying the elementary steps of the catalytic reaction, as illustrated for methanol oxidation over Mo/SiO2 catalysts whose EPR results have extended the reaction mechanism proposed on the basis of kinetic data. In addition, reaction intermediates may be isolated inquasi-in situ conditions as in the case of olefin oligomerization catalyzed by Ni/SiO2 systems.

    Five different liquid medium culture methods for meristem propagation of bananas were investigated and compared with solid medium culture. Treatments studied were: gelled culture medium (treatment 1); liquid medium with immersion of the plants (treatment 2); liquid medium with cellulose culture support (treatment 3); liquid medium with partial immersion of the plants (treatment 4); liquid medium aerated by bubbling (treatment 5); liquid medium with temporary immersion of the explants for 20 min every 2h (treatment 6). After 20 days of culture, three culture groups with statistically different multiplication rates were observed:
  • -shoots in simple liquid medium and those on cellulose substrate proliferated little or not at all,
  • -shoots on gelled medium, those subjected to partial immersion and those in aerated medium displayed multiplication rates of 2.2 to 3.1, and
  • -the highest multiplication rate (>5) was observed in explants subjected to temporary immersion in the medium.
  • Two groups of treatments differed in the accumulation of dry matter: the smallest weight (around 0.5 g) was observed in treatment 1, 2, 3 and 4, and accumulation was 2 to 5 times greater in the explants in aerated liquid medium and those subjected to temporary immersion. The highest multiplication rates and weight gains were observed in aerated treatments (treatments 4 and 5). Shoots in liquid medium continuously aerated by bubbling displayed hyperhydricity of the outer leaf sheaths. This was not observed with temporary immersion of explants.  相似文献

    1. Specific activity of amylase, cellulase, protease and lipase in the intestines of the air-breathing catfish, Clarias batrachus (Linn.) has been studied.
    2. Excepting amylase and protease, the activity of lipase and cellulase showed practically no changes with change in the nutritional status of the diets.
    3. pH optima of all enzymes were between 6.9 and 7.6
    4. There is reason to believe from cellulase and high amylase activity in the intestine of the species that its culture operation could be done more economically by giving them a supplementary diet from indigeneously available raw material particularly from plant origin.

    The decomposition (meaning disappearance) of different leaf types and artificial leaves made from cellulose hydrate foil was studied in three forests — an alluvial forest (Ulmetum), a beech forest on limestone soil (Melico-Fagetum), and a spruce forest in soil overlying limestone bedrock. Fine, medium, and coarse mesh litter bags of special design were used to investigate the roles of abiotic factors, microorganisms, and meso- and macrofauna in effecting decomposition in the three habitats. Additionally, the experimental design was carefully arranged so as to provide information about the effects on decomposition processes of the duration of exposure and the date or moment of exposure.
    1. Exposure of litter samples oor 12 months showed:
    2. Litter enclosed in fine mesh bags decomposed to some 40–44% of the initial amount placed in each of the three forests. Most of this decomposition can be attributed to abiotic factors and microoganisms.
    3. Litter placed in medium mesh litter bags reduced by ca. 60% in alluvial forest, ca. 50% in beech forest and ca. 44% in spruce forest.
    4. Litter enclosed in coarse mesh litter bags was reduced by 71% of the initial weights exposed in alluvial and beech forests; in the spruce forest decomposition was no greater than observed with fine and medium mesh litter bags. Clearly, in spruce forest the macrofauna has little or no part to play in effecting decomposition.
    5. Sequential month by month exposure of hazel leaves and cellulose hydrate foil in coarse mesh litter bags in all three forests showed that one month of exposure led to only slight material losses, they did occur smallest between March and May, and largest between June and October/November.
    6. Coarse mesh litter bags containing either hazel or artificial leaves of cellulose hydrate foil were exposed to natural decomposition processes in December 1977 and subsampled monthly over a period of one year, this series constituted the From-sequence of experiments. Each of the From-sequence samples removed was immediately replaced by a fresh litter bag which was left in place until December 1978, this series constituted the To-sequence of experiments. The results arising from the designated From- and To-sequences showed:
    7. During the course of one year hazel leaves decomposed completely in alluvial forest, almost completely in beech forest but to only 50% of the initial value in spruce forest.
    8. Duration of exposure and not the date of exposure is the major controlling influence on decomposition in alluvial forest, a characteristic reflected in the mirror-image courses of the From- and To-sequences curves with respect to the abscissa or time axis. Conversely the date of exposure and not the duration of exposure is the major controlling influence on decomposition in the spruce forest, a characteristic reflected in the mirror-image courses of the From-and To-sequences with respect to the ordinate or axis of percentage decomposition.
    9. Leaf powder amendment increased the decomposition rate of the hazel and cellulose hydrate leaves in the spruce forest but had no significant effect on their decomposition rate in alluvial and beech forests. It is concluded from this, and other evidence, that litter amendment by leaf fragments of phytophage frass in sites of low biological decomposition activity (eg. spruce) enhances decomposition processes.
    10. The time course of hazel leaf decomposition in both alluvial and beech forest is sigmoidal. Three s-phases are distinguished and correspond to the activity of microflora/microfauna, mesofauna/macrofauna, and then microflora/microfauna again. In general, the sigmoidal pattern of the curve can be considered valid for all decomposition processes occurring in terrestrial situations. It is contended that no decomposition (=disappearance) curve actually follows an e-type exponential function. A logarithmic linear regression can be constructed from the sigmoid curve data and although this facilitates inter-system comparisons it does not clearly express the dynamics of decomposition.
    11. The course of the curve constructed from information about the standard deviations of means derived from the From- and To-sequence data does reflect the dynamics of litter decomposition. The three s-phases can be recognised and by comparing the actual From-sequence deviation curve with a mirror inversion representation of the To-sequence curve it is possible to determine whether decomposition is primarily controlled by the duration of exposure or the date of exposure. As is the case for hazel leaf decomposition in beech forest intermediate conditions can be readily recognised.

    Galanthamine (GAL) is increasingly used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. We have attempted to develop a method of producing this alkaloid using in vitro cultures of Narcissus confusus plants. The “shoot-clump” culture in liquid medium was shown to be an appropriate method for the micropropagation of this bulbous plant. The complete process included three steps:
    1. culture of “twin-scales” starting from the bulbs;
    2. culture of the newly formed shoots in a medium for bud proliferation (Murashige Skoog+1 mg l-1 of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid+5 mg l-1 of benzyladenine), and
    3. culture of “shoot-clumps” in a liquid-shake medium. Here we describe the effect of the addition of trans-cinnamic acid, a precursor in the biosynthesis of the Amaryllidaceae alkaloids, on the production of galanthamine and related alkaloids, and also on the growth of the “shoot-clump” culture. The production of galanthamine was found to be inhibited by the addition of the precursor, which promoted the production of the other alkaloid in the same biosynthetic pathway, N-formyl-norgalanthamine. The total production of galanthamine in the control cultures in day-long photoperiod was 2.50 mg per culture, of which 1.97 mg per culture were released into the medium.

    Acetoin dehydrogenase can be catabolite repressed by numerous sources of carbon. The following results point out that the catabolite repression of this enzyme and the inhibition of sporulation are mediated by the same mechanism:
    1. Mutants, able to synthesize acetoin dehydrogenase in the presence of glucose, sporulate in glucose medium at a higher rate than the standard strain.
    2. The catabolite repressing effect of a compound and its ability to inhibit sporulation are in a direct relation to each other.
    3. The limitation of inorganic phosphate in the growth medium, which is known to favour sporulation, counteracts the catabolite repressing effect of glucose.

    1. Cell-free extracts from vegetative cells and developing myxospores of Myxococcus xanthus were found to contain similar amounts of proteolytic activity, approximately 80% of which was due to one or more neutral metal proteases.
    2. Sixty per cent of the proteolytic activity was particulate.
    3. The specific activity of the proteases was high throughout all stages of myxospore formation and displayed small increases in activity at two stages of development: (1) during cell shortening and (2) immediately following the conversion to spheres. The first peak in activity was apparent in assays conducted at pH 8 or 10 whereas the second peak was obvious only at pH 6.
    4. A mutant which develops into myxospores only after a lag of approximately 7–8 h possessed levels of proteases similar to the wild type and displayed a peak in proteolytic activity after a delay of 7–8 h.
    5. Low levels of serine protease activity were occasionally detected in both vegetative cells and myxospores; no sulfhydryl proteases were detectable in either cell type.
    6. Extracellular proteases accumulated in the medium throughout myxospore development but differed from the intracellular proteases in pH optima and sensitivity to inhibitors.

    Young colonies of Sabouraud's glucose agar room temperature culture ofCandida species from human isolation were suspended in distilled water. The suspension was mixed with a solution of lysozyme and incubated in a 37° C water bath. Within 3–5 hours, various species ofCandida cells showed flocculation to varying degrees which occurred at varying periods of onset. Among sevenCandida species,Candida albicans andCandida stellatoidea showed the strongest flocculation, earliest onset and most solution clarity than did any other species.Candida stellatoidea was indistinguishable fromCandida albicans in its degree of flocculation, and in the clarity of solution.Candida species may be arranged in the following order according to their decreasing positivity in flocculation:

    High frequency plant regeneration via somatic embryogenesis has been induced from in vitro shoot-base cultures of seedlings of garden leek (Allium porrum L.). Four main steps are involved in the procedure using BDS medium:
  • - shoot multiplication with 17.6 mM benzyladenine;
  • - induction of nodular callus from the in vitro shoot base with 9 mM 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid;
  • - initiation of embryogenic callus from nodular callus with 9 mM 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid +7.6 mM abscisic acid;
  • - plant regeneration from embryogenic callus with 9.8 mM N6-(2-isopentenyl)adenine.
  • The presence of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in the medium and light conditions were shown to be essential for nodular callus induction and somatic embryogenesis. Abscisic acid was not a prerequiste for somatic embryogenesis, but it significantly increased the frequency.  相似文献

    The following scheme lists the problems which have been and will continue to be encountered in grazing experiments on natural particle assemblages. In some cases there are solutions, but many of the problems listed below remain intractable. To solve them will require innovative approaches, most probably combining the use of particle counters with other techniques to approach the problem to be solved from several angles at once. Variance between samples due to
  • - statistical causes (especially caused by large particles) and
  • - differences between experimental bottles and between experimentals and controls at start of experiment. Shifts in particle distribution during experiment due to
  • - increase in small particles
  • - growth of bacteria and other organisms due to excretion of grazers and
  • - breakage during handling by grazers into fragments. Processes, independent of grazing, leading to changes in particle size distribution due to
  • - primary production
  • - grazing by additional components and
  • - bacterial growth on detrital particles and the formation of detrital flocs.

    1. The transfer of immature embryos from maternal plants to artificial media influenced the radial arrangement of vascular bundles in developing root primordia. The variability in the number of poles of the prospective protoxylem and protophloem, observed as a rule during embryogenesis under natural conditions, could not be suppressed even under the conditions ofin vitro cultivation. The possibility is admitted that when using agar medium the nutrient supply need not necessarily be equivalent for all embryos.
    2. Using excised embryos of various ages the period of delimination of the vascular system in the root primordium was determined. It is relatively short and occurs in the first half of embryogenesis. The results obtained revealed no relationship between vascular system arrangement in root primordium and mature grain and mature embryo size.
    3. Maize ear represents a type of inflorescence of which the apical part is delayed in development. Histogenically this uneven development becomes evident with the formation of a significantly lower mean number of poles in root primordia from the grains originating from the apical region of the cob. This is further evidence of the adaptibility of the vascular system development to environmental conditions.
    4. As further causes of the variability in pole number those differences are considered which occur during sex cell formation, pollination and fertilization.

    Androgenic hormones seem to be of beneficial effects on sports performance:
  • - they increase motivation, will, aggressiveness, resistance to the stress and to the fatigue, leading to an increase of the training quantity,
  • - they increase bone mineralization and probably mechanical resistance,
  • - they stimulate the bone marrow and so, with the erythropoietin, the erythropoiesis,
  • - they increase the tendancy to hyperglycemia, but with a decrease of the tolerance to the glucose,
  • - they stimulate the fatty acids mobilization from the adipose tissue, for their utilization in the muscle during the exercise,
  • - they participate, for the trained sportmen, to a better gestion of the muscle glycogen storage: their utilization during exercise is decreased,
  • - they increase the lean body mass, with an increase of the protein synthesis and a decrease of the protein catabolism, leading also to an increase of the muscle force under training. There is no beneficial effect upon the tendons,
  • - they have an immunomodulation action.
