Although scorpions are one of the better known groups of Arthropoda, detailed knowledge of their anatomy remains superficial. This contribution presents the first comprehensive investigation of the gross morphology of the scorpion vascular system, based on a survey of species representing all major lineages of the order, using classical and modern non-destructive techniques in combination with three-dimensional reconstruction. The investigation reveals that the hemolymph vascular system (HVS) of Scorpiones comprises a central pumping heart which extends the entire length of the mesosoma and is enclosed in a pericardium. Several arteries branch off the heart to supply different organs and body regions. Two different anterior aorta major branching patterns are identified among the species investigated. Arteries that branch off the anterior aorta system supply the appendages (chelicerae, pedipalps, and walking legs) and the central nerve mass with a complex arterial network. This study of the HVS of scorpions provides further evidence that the vascular systems of euarthropods can be highly complex. Use of the term "open circulatory system" within arthropods is re-emphasized, as it refers to the general organization of the body cavity (i.e. mixocoely) rather than to the complexity of the circulatory system.  相似文献

Endocranial surfaces, volumes, and interconnectivities of extant and fossil odontocetes potentially offer information on the general architecture of the brain and on the structure of the specialized cetacean circulatory system. Although conventional methods for acquiring such data have generally involved invasive preparation of the specimen, particularly in the case of fossils, new tomographic technologies afford nondestructive access to these internal morphologies. In this study we used high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) to scan a skull of the extant Tursiops truncatus (Cetacea: Odontoceti). We processed the data to reveal the cranial endocast and details of internal skeletal architecture (data at www.digimorph.org). Major features that can be discerned include aspects of the specimen's hypertrophied retia mirabilia, the major canals and openings of the cranial cavity, and the relationship of the brain and endocranial circulatory structures to the surrounding skeleton. CT data also provide information on the shape of the brain that may be lost in conventional anatomical preparations, and readily provide volumetric and linear measurements of the endocast and its individual segments. These results demonstrate the utility of HRXCT for interpreting the internal cranial anatomy of both extant and fossil cetaceans.  相似文献

Before the appearance of a functional heart in many invertebrate species, the assumption was that general body movements provide circulatory function. Consequently, I investigated the frequency of gut movements in the brine shrimp, Artemia franciscana, immediately post-hatch to the point when a functional heart appeared. Prior to cardiac ontogeny, movements of internal musculature and gut provided pre-cardiac circulatory currents with the rate of gut movements increasing when swimming limbs were impeded. There was also some evidence that gut movements were responsive to low oxygen, indicating a possible regulatory function for the gut in early circulation. Overall, this suggests that general body movements are not always adequate to provide internal circulation in small, heartless individuals.  相似文献

Djungarian dwarf hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) show an annual cycle in weight-specific metabolic rate with a high level during winter. These seasonal changes in oxygen demand are met by hematological adjustments, primarily based on an increased number of erythrocytes, but a decreased erythrocyte volume during winter. Subsequently, the diffusion area for blood gas exchange is increased during this time of high metabolic capabilities. Blood oxygen capacity (hemoglobin, 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) does not change with the season. However, seasonal changes in heart weight suggest changes in cardiac output, causing an increased blood flow per unit tissue weight during winter. This increase in circulatory efficiency, as well as changes in erythrocyte surface, are primarily controlled by photoperiod, since it occurred in hamsters living indoors at thermoneutrality but subjected to seasonal changes in photoperiod to the same extent as in hamsters living outdoors.  相似文献

Background

The ostrich Struthio camelus reaches the highest speeds of any extant biped, and has been an extraordinary subject for studies of soft-tissue anatomy and dynamics of locomotion. An elongate tarsometatarsus in adult ostriches contributes to their speed. The internal osteology of the tarsometatarsus, and its mechanical response to forces of running, are potentially revealing about ostrich foot function.

Methods/Principal Findings

Computed tomography (CT) reveals anatomy and bone densities in tarsometatarsi of an adult and a young juvenile ostrich. A finite element (FE) model for the adult was constructed with properties of compact and cancellous bone where these respective tissues predominate in the original specimen. The model was subjected to a quasi-static analysis under the midstance ground reaction and muscular forces of a fast run. Anatomy–Metatarsals are divided proximally and distally and unify around a single internal cavity in most adult tarsometatarsus shafts, but the juvenile retains an internal three-part division of metatarsals throughout the element. The juvenile has a sparsely ossified hypotarsus for insertion of the m. fibularis longus, as part of a proximally separate third metatarsal. Bone is denser in all regions of the adult tarsometatarsus, with cancellous bone concentrated at proximal and distal articulations, and highly dense compact bone throughout the shaft. Biomechanics–FE simulations show stress and strain are much greater at midshaft than at force applications, suggesting that shaft bending is the most important stressor of the tarsometatarsus. Contraction of digital flexors, inducing a posterior force at the TMT distal condyles, likely reduces buildup of tensile stresses in the bone by inducing compression at these locations, and counteracts bending loads. Safety factors are high for von Mises stress, consistent with faster running speeds known for ostriches.

Conclusions/Significance

High safety factors suggest that bone densities and anatomy of the ostrich tarsometatarsus confer strength for selectively critical activities, such as fleeing and kicking predators. Anatomical results and FE modeling of the ostrich tarsometatarsus are a useful baseline for testing the structure’s capabilities and constraints for locomotion, through ontogeny and the full step cycle. With this foundation, future analyses can incorporate behaviorally realistic strain rates and distal joint forces, experimental validation, and proximal elements of the ostrich hind limb.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to analyze the mortality from circulatory diseases for about 30,000 members of the Techa River cohort over the period 1950–2003, and to investigate how these rates depend on radiation doses. This population received both external and internal exposures from 90Sr, 89Sr, 137Cs, and other uranium fission products as a result of waterborne releases from the Mayak nuclear facility in the Southern Urals region of the Russian Federation. The analysis included individualized estimates of the total (external plus internal) absorbed dose in muscle calculated based on the Techa River Dosimetry System 2009. The cohort-average dose to muscle tissue was 35 mGy, and the maximum dose was 510 mGy. Between 1950 and 2003, 7,595 deaths from circulatory diseases were registered among cohort members with 901,563 person years at risk. Mortality rates in the cohort were analyzed using a simple parametric excess relative risk (ERR) model. For all circulatory diseases, the estimated excess relative risk per 100 mGy with a 15-year lag period was 3.6 % with a 95 % confidence interval of 0.2–7.5 %, and for ischemic heart disease it was 5.6 % with a 95 % confidence interval of 0.1–11.9 %. A linear ERR model provided the best fit. Analyses with a lag period shorter than 15 years from the beginning of exposure did not reveal any significant risk of mortality from either all circulatory diseases or ischemic heart disease. There was no evidence of an increased mortality risk from cerebrovascular disease (p > 0.5). These results should be regarded as preliminary, since they will be updated after adjustment for smoking and alcohol consumption.  相似文献

Squamates use the circulatory system to regulate body and head temperatures during both heating and cooling. The flexibility of this system, which possibly exceeds that of endotherms, offers a number of physiological mechanisms to gain or retain heat (e.g., increase peripheral blood flow and heart rate, cooling the head to prolong basking time for the body) as well as to shed heat (modulate peripheral blood flow, expose sites of thermal exchange). Squamates also have the ability to establish and maintain the same head-to-body temperature differential that birds, crocodilians, and mammals demonstrate, but without a discrete rete or other vascular physiological device. Squamates offer important anatomical and phylogenetic evidence for the inference of the blood vessels of dinosaurs and other extinct archosaurs in that they shed light on the basal diapsid condition. Given this basal positioning, squamates likewise inform and constrain the range of physiological thermoregulatory mechanisms that may have been found in Dinosauria. Unfortunately, the literature on squamate vascular anatomy is limited. Cephalic vascular anatomy of green iguanas (Iguana iguana) was investigated using a differential-contrast, dual-vascular injection (DCDVI) technique and high-resolution X-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT). Blood vessels were digitally segmented to create a surface representation of vascular pathways. Known sites of thermal exchange, consisting of the oral, nasal, and orbital regions, were given special attention due to their role in brain and cephalic thermoregulation. Blood vessels to and from sites of thermal exchange were investigated to detect conserved vascular patterns and to assess their ability to deliver cooled blood to the dural venous sinuses. Arteries within sites of thermal exchange were found to deliver blood directly and through collateral pathways. The venous drainage was found to have multiple pathways that could influence neurosensory tissue temperature, as well as pathways that would bypass neurosensory tissues. The orbital region houses a large venous sinus that receives cooled blood from the nasal region. Blood vessels from the nasal region and orbital sinus show anastomotic connections to the dural sinus system, allowing for the direct modulation of brain temperatures. The generality of the vascular patterns discovered in iguanas were assessed by firsthand comparison with other squamates taxa (e.g., via dissection and osteological study) as well as the literature. Similar to extant archosaurs, iguanas and other squamates have highly vascularized sites of thermal exchange that likely support physiological thermoregulation that “fine tunes” temperatures attained through behavioral thermoregulation.  相似文献

Tanaidacea and Cumacea are crucial for understanding the phylogenetic relationships of "core group" peracarids. Here, the haemolymph vascular system in three tanaidacean and four cumacean species was studied on the basis of histological sections and 3D reconstruction. The circulatory organs in Tanaidacea include a tubular heart which extends through most of the thorax. It is extended into the cephalothorax by an anterior aorta. Haemolymph enters the heart through one to two pairs of incurrent ostia. Up to five pairs of cardiac arteries emanate from the heart to supply viscera in the body cavity. In the anterior cephalothorax, the aorta forms a pericerebral ring from which the arteries for the brain and the antennae branch off. In Cumacea, the heart is shorter but more voluminous. In all cumaceans studied, five pairs of cardiac arteries supply the thoracopods and the pleon. The single pair of ostia is situated in the centre of the heart. The anterior aorta runs into the anterior cephalothorax where it supplies the brain and antennae. This paper provides a general comparative discussion of all available data from the literature and the data provided herein. In certain details, the haemolymph vascular system of the Tanaidacea resembles that of Amphipoda, and some correspondences between Cumacea and Isopoda are pointed out. These findings might support a closer relationship between the latter two taxa while they show no support for an amphipod/isopod clade.  相似文献

Featherstars, comatulid crinoids that shed their stalk during their ontogeny, are the most species-rich lineage of modern crinoids and the only ones present in shallow water today. Although they are of considerable palaeontological interest as a ‘success story’ of the Mesozoic Marine Revolution, their fossil record is relatively species-poor and fragmentary. New Spanish fossils of the Cretaceous featherstar Decameros ricordeanus preserve the shape and configuration of nervous and circulatory anatomy in the form of infilled cavities, which we reconstruct from CT scans. The circulatory system of D. ricordeanus was relatively extensive and complex, implying a pattern of coelomic fluid flow that is unique among crinoids, and the peripheral parts of the nervous system include linkages both to the circulatory system and to the surface of the body. A phylogenetic analysis (the first to include both living and fossil featherstars and which includes characters from internal anatomy) recovers D. ricordeanus among the lineage of featherstars that includes Himerometroidea, Tropiometra and ‘Antedonoidea’, among others. D. ricordeanus is larger than almost any modern featherstar, and its elaborate coelomic morphology appears to be a consequence of positive allometry. All featherstars with coelomic diverticula are shown to belong to a single comatulid subclade, and this feature may constitute a synapomorphy of that group. Some preservation of cavities corresponding to soft tissue is probably not exceptional in fossil crinoids, providing an opportunity to study the diversity and evolution of extinct anatomical systems typically only preserved in Lagerstätten.  相似文献

Flap prefabrication in the head and neck: a 10-year experience   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Tissue neovascularized by implanting a vascular pedicle can be transferred as a "prefabricated flap" based on the blood flow through the implanted pedicle. This technique potentially allows any defined tissue volume to be transferred to any specified recipient site, greatly expanding the armamentarium of reconstructive options. During the past 10 years, 17 flaps were prefabricated and 15 flaps were transferred successfully in 12 patients. Tissue expanders were used as an aid in 11 flaps. Seven flaps were prefabricated at a distant site and later transferred using microsurgical techniques. Ten flaps were prefabricated near the recipient site by either transposition of a local vascular pedicle or the microvascular transfer of a distant vascular pedicle. The prefabricated flaps were subsequently transferred as island pedicle flaps. These local vascular pedicles can be re-used to transfer additional neovascularized tissues. Common pedicles used for neovascularization included the descending branch of the lateral femoral circumflex, superficial temporal, radial, and thoracodorsal pedicles. Most flaps developed transient venous congestion that resolved in 36 to 48 hours. Venous congestion could be reduced by incorporating a native superficial vein into the design of the flap or by extending the prefabrication time from 6 weeks to several months. Placing a Gore-Tex sleeve around the proximal pedicle allowed for much easier pedicle dissection at the time of transfer. Prefabricated flaps allow the transfer of moderate-sized units of thin tissue to recipient sites throughout the body. They have been particularly useful in patients recovering from extensive burn injury on whom thin donor sites are limited.  相似文献

The carapace of Recent crustaceans such as myodocope ostracodes and phyllocarids is pervaded with well-developed anastomosing sinuses conveying hemolymph from the metabolizing organs to the dorsal heart. The inner lamella cuticle, which separates the sinuses from seawater, is thin enough to allow gaseous diffusion (e.g., O2 uptake) over its surface. Comparable radiating and/or anastomosing features, of possible vascular origin, are herein recognized in several possible Crustacea from the Cambrian: cambriid, svealutiid, hipponicharionid and beyrichonid Bradoriida and in Carnarvonia from the middle Cambrian Burgess Shale. The vascular network is basically the same in these groups, consisting of sinuses radiating from supposed adductorial areas or from inferred areas of dorsal attachment of the body. The integumental (carapace sinuses) and branchial (gills) systems of respiration in crustaceans and crustacean-like animals were probably already differentiated by the middle Cambrian. The oldest record of probable integumental circulation is in the bradoriid Petrianna from the early Cambrian of Greenland. Similar circulatory systems may be represented by radiating ridges on the cephalon of other Cambrian arthropod groups such as the arachnomorphs ( Burgessia ) and trilobites ( Naraioa ) and may also be manifest in the carapaces of Ordovician-Devonian leperditicope ostracodes. Organs on the thoracopods of Cambrian supposed crustaceans, such as Canadaspis , resemble the foliaceous thoracic gills of Recent nebaliid phyllocarids and therefore may have served the same (respiratory) function.  相似文献

Form and Function in Reptilian Circulations   总被引:4,自引:2,他引:2
Consistent with the great variation in their circulatory morphology, there are distinct variations in the cardiovascular physiologyof extant reptiles. The chelonian and squamate reptiles havea complexly structured heart that includes three partially separatedventricular cava. In most species (under most conditions), theventricle acts as a single pressure pump perfusing both thepulmonary and systemic circuits. However, the varanid lizardsprovide a striking exception. Subtle evolutionary changes incardiac morphology allow the ventricle of the varanid lizardto divide functionally during systole into a low pressure, pulmonarypump and a high pressure, systemic pump. The crocodilians representyet another anatomical and physiological pattern. The ventricleis completely divided into left and right chambers as in homeotherms, but the systemic and pulmonary circuits may still communicatethrough the left aorta that arises from the right ventricle. A fundamental feature of all reptilian circulations is the abilityto regulate the distribution of cardiac output between systemicand pulmonary circuits via central vascular blood shunts.Regardlessof species, mechanisms for regulating intracardiac shuntinginvolve changes in the balance between peripheral resistanceof the pulmonary and systemic circulations, and adjustmentsin cardiac performance per se. Several hypotheses are presentedthat suggest selective advantages for central vascular shuntingin intermittent breathing reptiles with variable body temperatureand metabolic rate.  相似文献

Background

VE-cadherin is an endothelial specific, transmembrane protein, that clusters at adherens junctions where it promotes homotypic cell-cell adhesion. VE-cadherin null mutation in the mouse results in early fetal lethality due to altered vascular development. However, the mechanism of action of VE-cadherin is complex and, in the mouse embryo, it is difficult to define the specific steps of vascular development in which this protein is involved.

Methodology and Principal Findings

In order to study the role VE-cadherin in the development of the vascular system in a more suitable model, we knocked down the expression of the coding gene in zebrafish. The novel findings reported here are: 1) partial reduction of VE-cadherin expression using low doses of morpholinos causes vascular fragility, head hemorrhages and increase in permeability; this has not been described before and suggests that the total amount of the protein expressed is an important determinant of vascular stability; 2) concentrations of morpholinos which abrogate VE-cadherin expression prevent vessels to establish successful reciprocal contacts and, as a consequence, vascular sprouting activity is not inhibited. This likely explains the observed vascular hyper-sprouting and the presence of several small, collapsing vessels; 3) the common cardinal vein lacks a correct connection with the endocardium leaving the heart separated from the rest of the circulatory system. The lack of closure of the circulatory loop has never been described before and may explain some downstream defects of the phenotype such as the lack of a correct vascular remodeling.

Conclusions and Significance

Our observations identify several steps of vascular development in which VE-cadherin plays an essential role. While it does not appear to regulate vascular patterning it is implicated in vascular connection and inhibition of sprouting activity. These processes require stable cell-cell junctions which are defective in absence of VE-cadherin. Notably, also partial modifications in VE-cadherin expression prevent the formation of a stable vasculature. This suggests that partial internalization or change of function of this protein may strongly affect vascular stability and organization.  相似文献

Total metabolism, body temperature and basic circulatory parameters (the heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen content and hind limb blood flow) were measured in anaesthetized cold-acclimated male laboratory rats exposed to the calorigenic action of noradrenaline. In addition, cardiac output, the oxygen extraction coefficient and peripheral vascular resistance were calculated from these data.  相似文献

Mechanics of cancer cells are directly linked to their metastatic potential, or ability to produce a secondary tumor at a distant site. Metastatic cells survive in the circulatory system in a non-adherent state, and can squeeze through barriers in the body. Such considerable structural changes in cells rely on rapid remodeling of internal structure and mechanics. While external mechanical measurements have demonstrated enhanced pliability of cancer cells with increased metastatic potential, little is known about dynamics of their interior and we expect that to change significantly in metastatic cells. We perform a comparative study, using particle-tracking to evaluate the intracellular mechanics of living epithelial breast cells with varying invasiveness. Particles in all examined cell lines exhibit super-diffusion with a scaling exponent of 1.4 at short lag times, likely related to active transport by fluctuating microtubules and their associated molecular motors. Specifics of probe-particle transport differ between the cell types, depending on the cytoskeleton network-structure and interactions with it. Our study shows that the internal microenvironment of the highly metastatic cells evaluated here is more pliable and their cytoskeleton is less dense than the poorly metastatic and benign cells. We thus reveal intracellular structure and mechanics that can support the unique function and invasive capabilities of highly metastatic cells.  相似文献

Echiurida is a small group of marine benthic invertebrates that burrow in sediments and live a hidden lifestyle. Investigation of the morphology and anatomical features of various organ systems allows better understanding of the biology of these enigmatic animals, many of which are deep-sea species. The morphology and microscopic anatomy of the deep-sea echiurid Protobonellia zenkevitchi Murina, 1976 have been studied using the light microscopy and histology methods. The body of P. zenkevitchi is divided into a proboscis and trunk. The ciliary grooves and large vacuolated cells in the connective tissue of the distal part of the proboscis suggest a specific position of the proboscis on the sediment surface and a mechanism for sorting food particles. It has been shown for the first time that the coelom is not subdivided into compartments. In the digestive tract, an unusual part of the midgut has been found that was previously unknown in echiurids; it probably performs the function of food storage. This part contributes to thorough food digestion, which is important in the oligotrophic conditions of greater depths. The circulatory system of P. zenkevitchi lacks the neuro-intestinal and ring blood vessels. The oocyte storage chamber of the gonoduct has a pore, which apparently connects its cavity with the trunk coelom, but lacks a specialized and well-expressed part, the androecium. A comparative analysis of the microscopic anatomy shows that many organ systems (muscular, coelomic, circulatory, excretory, and reproductive) in P. zenkevitchi have a simpler organization compared to those in other echiurids. This can probably be explained by the small body size of P. zenkevitchi and the great depths of its habitat. At the same time, P. zenkevitchi possesses some unique anatomical characteristics related to the features of the biology of this deep-sea species.  相似文献

The decoupled sites representation (DSR) is a theoretical instrument which allows to regard complex pH titration curves of biomolecules with several interacting proton binding sites as composition of isolated, non-interacting sites, each with a standard Henderson–Hasselbalch titration curve. In this work, we present the mathematical framework in which the DSR is embedded and give mathematical proofs for several statements in the periphery of the DSR. These proofs also identify exceptions. To apply the DSR to any molecule, it is necessary to extend the set of binding energies from ${\mathbb{R}}$ to a stripe within ${\mathbb{C}}$ . An important observation in this context is that even positive interaction energies (repulsion) between the binding sites will not guarantee real binding energies in the decoupled system, at least if the molecule has more than four proton binding sites. Moreover, we show that for a given overall titration curve it is not only possible to find a corresponding system with an interaction energy of zero but with any arbitrary fix interaction energy. This result also effects practical work as it shows that for any given titration curve, there is an infinite number of corresponding hypothetical molecules. Furthermore, this implies that—using a common definition of cooperative binding on the level of interaction energies—a meaningful measure of cooperativity between the binding sites cannot be defined solely on the basis of the overall titration. Consequently, all measures of cooperativity based on the overall binding curve do not measure the type of cooperativity commonly defined on the basis of interaction energies. Understanding the DSR mathematically provides the basis of transferring the DSR to biomolecules with different types of interacting ligands, such as protons and electrons, which play an important role within electron transport chains like in photosynthesis.  相似文献

Introduction

The intra-hepatic vascular anatomy in rodents, its variations and corresponding supplying and draining territories in respect to the lobar structure of the liver have not been described. We performed a detailed anatomical imaging study in rats and mice to allow for further refinement of experimental surgical approaches.

Methods

LEWIS-Rats and C57Bl/6N-Mice were subjected to ex-vivo imaging using μCT. The image data were used for semi-automated segmentation to extract the hepatic vascular tree as prerequisite for 3D visualization. The underlying vascular anatomy was reconstructed, analysed and used for determining hepatic vascular territories.

Results

The four major liver lobes have their own lobar portal supply and hepatic drainage territories. In contrast, the paracaval liver is supplied by various small branches from right and caudate portal veins and drains directly into the vena cava. Variations in hepatic vascular anatomy were observed in terms of branching pattern and distance of branches to each other. The portal vein anatomy is more variable than the hepatic vein anatomy. Surgically relevant variations were primarily observed in portal venous supply.

Conclusions

For the first time the key variations of intrahepatic vascular anatomy in mice and rats and their surgical implications were described. We showed that lobar borders of the liver do not always match vascular territorial borders. These findings are of importance for the design of new surgical procedures and for understanding eventual complications following hepatic surgery.  相似文献

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) control of the circulation is altered with aging in adult humans. Similar changes are observed in obesity, particularly abdominal obesity. To determine whether age-associated differences in ANS-circulatory function can be partially explained by increased body fatness, we examined ANS function and three expressions of adiposity (total body fat, abdominal body fat, and abdominal-to-peripheral body fat distribution; dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) in 43 healthy men: 27 young (25 +/- 1 yr) and 16 older (65 +/- 1). ANS functions assessed included 1) autonomic support of arterial blood pressure (BP; radial artery catheter), i.e., the reduction in BP during versus before acute ganglionic blockade (GB; intravenous trimethaphan); 2) baroreflex buffering, i.e., the increase in systolic BP with continuous incremental and bolus infusions of phenylephrine during versus before GB; 3) cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity (Oxford technique); and 4) heart rate variability (time- and frequency-domain analyses). Covarying for abdominal-to-peripheral fat distribution reduced or abolished age-related differences in ANS support of BP, cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity, and heart rate variability but did not affect age-related differences in baroreflex buffering. Covarying for abdominal and total fat had small selective or no effects on age-associated differences in autonomic-circulatory control. Abdominal-to-peripheral fat distribution explains a significant portion of the variance in a number of autonomic-circulatory functions attributable to aging. Therefore, the development of this fat pattern may contribute to several changes in ANS-cardiovascular function observed with aging. These results may help explain how changes in body fat distribution with advancing age are linked to impairments in circulatory control.  相似文献
