The application of the expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor for the anaerobic treatment of low-strength soluble wastewaters using ethanol as a model substrate was investigated in laboratory-scale reactors at 30oC. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was above 80% at organic loading rates up to12 g COD/L . d with influent concentrations as low as 100 to 200 mg COD/L. These results demonstrate the suitability of the EGBS reactor for the anaerobic treatment of low-strength wastewaters. The high treatment performance can be attributed to the intense mixing regime obtained by high hydraulic and organic loads. Good mixing of the bulk liquid phase for the substrate-biomass contact and adequate expansion of the substrate-biomass contact and adequate expansion of the sludge bed for the degassing were obtained when the liquid upflow velocity (V(up)) was greater than 2.5 m/h. Under such conditions, an extremely low apparent K(s) value for acetoclastic methanogenesis of 9.8 mg COD/L was observed. The presence of dissolved oxygen in the wastewater had no detrimental effect on the treatment performance. Sludge piston flotation from pockets of biogas accumulating under the sludge bed occurred at V(up) lower than 2.5 m/h due to poor bed expansion. This problem is expected only in small diameter laboratory-scale reactors. A. more important restriction of the EGSB reactor was the sludge washout occurring at V(up) higher than 5.5 m/h and which was intensified at organic loads higher than 7 g COD/L. d due to buoyancy forces from the gas production. To achieve an equilibrium between the mixing intensity and the sludge hold-up, the operation should be limited to an organic loading rate of 7 g COD/L d. and to a liquid up-flow velocity between 2.5 and 5.5 m/h (c) 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Biodegradation of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) was shown in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor under thermophilic conditions. The reactor was inoculated with granular biomass and fed with a synthetic medium and 3 micromol/L of a mixture of LAS with alkylchain length of 10 to 13 carbon atoms. The reactor was operated with a hydraulic retention time of 12 h with effluent recirculation in an effluent to influent ratio of 5 to 1. A sterile reactor operated in parallel revealed that sorption to sludge particles initially accounted for a major LAS removal. After 8 days of reactor operation, the removal of LAS in the reactor inoculated with active granular biomass exceeded the removal in the sterile reactor inoculated with sterile granular biomass. The effect of sorption ceased after 185 to 555 h depending on the LAS homologs. 40% of the LAS was biodegraded, and the removal rate was 0.5 x 10(-6) mol/h/mL granular biomass. Acidified effluent from the reactor was subjected to dichloromethane extraction followed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Benzenesulfonic acid and benzaldehyde were detected in the reactor effluent from the reactor with active granular biomass but not in the sterile and unamended reactor effluent. Benzenesulfonic acid and benzaldehyde are the first identified degradation products in the anaerobic degradation of LAS.  相似文献

The feasibility of anaerobic methanethiol (MT) degradation at elevated sodium concentrations was investigated in a mesophilic (30 degrees C) lab-scale upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor, inoculated with estuarine sediment originating from the Wadden Sea (The Netherlands). MT was almost completely degraded (>95%) to sulfide, methane and carbon dioxide at volumetric loading rates up to 37 mmol MT x L(-1) x day(-1), 0.5 M sodium (NaCl or NaHCO(3)) and between pH 7.3 and 8.4. Batch experiments revealed that inhibition of MT degradation started at sodium (both NaCl and NaHCO(3)) concentrations exceeding 0.8 M. Sulfide inhibited MT degradation already around 3 mM (pH 8.3).  相似文献

Mean settling velocity of granular sludge in full-scale UASB (upflow anaerobic sludge blanket) and EGSB (expanded granular sludge bed) reactors was evaluated by settling column tests, and a settling velocity model based on the experimental results and available literature data was developed. It is concluded that the settling velocity should be calculated by the Allen formula, because the settling process of the granules is in the category of intermediate flow regime rather than in the laminar flow one. The comparison between calculated and measured values of the settling velocity shows an excellent agreement, with an average relative error of 4.04%. A simple but reliable mathematical method to determine the settling velocity is therefore proposed.  相似文献

In order to understand the fate of PCP in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB) more completely, the sorption and biodegradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) by anaerobic sludge granules were investigated. The anaerobic granular sludge degrading PCP was formed in UASB reactor, which was seeded with anaerobic sludge acclimated by chlorophenols. At the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 20–22 h, and PCP loading rate of 200–220 mg l−1 d−1, UASB reactor exhibited good performance in treating wastewater which containing 170–180 mg l−1 PCP and the PCP removal rate of 99.5% was achieved. Sequential appearance of tetra-, tri-, di-, and mono-chlorophenol was observed in the reactor effluent after 20 mg l−1 PCP introduction. Sorption and desorption of PCP on the anaerobic sludge granules were all fitted to the Freundlich isotherm equation. Sorption of PCP was partly irreversible. The Freundlich equation could describe the behavior of PCP amount sorbed by granular sludge in anaerobic reactor reasonably well. The results demonstrated that the main mechanism leading to removal of PCP on anaerobic granular sludge was biodegradation, not sorption or volatization.  相似文献

Long-term operation for biohydrogen production with an efficient carrier-induced granular sludge bed (CIGSB) bioreactor had encountered problems with poor biomass retention at a low hydraulic retention (HRT) as well as poor mass-transfer efficiency at a high HRT or under a prolonged operation period. This work was undertaken to develop strategies enabling better biomass retention and mass-transfer efficiency of the CIGSB reactors. Supplementation of calcium ion was found to enhance mechanical strength of the granular sludge. Addition of 5.4–27.2 mg/l of Ca2+ also led to an over three-fold increase in biomass concentration and a nearly five-fold increase in the H2 production rate (up to 5.1 l H2/h/l). Two reflux strategies were utilized to enhance the mass-transfer efficiency of the CIGSB system. The liquid reflux (LR) strategy enhanced the H2 production rate by 2.2-fold at an optimal liquid upflow velocity of 1.09 m/h, which also gave a maximal biomass concentration of ca. 22 g VSS/l. Similar optimal H2 production rate was also obtained with the gas reflux (GR) strategy at a rate of 1.0–1.49 m/h, whereas the biomass concentration decreased to 2–7 g VSS/l and thereby the specific H2 production rate was higher than that with LR. The operation strategies applied in this work were effective to allow stable and efficient H2 production for nearly 100 days.  相似文献

During the treatment of raw domestic wastewater in the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, the suspended solids (SS) present in the wastewater tend to influence negatively the methanogenic activity and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) conversion efficiency. These problems led to the emergence of various anaerobic sludge bed systems such as the expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB), the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB)-septic tank, the hydrolysis upflow sludge bed (HUSB), the two-stage reactor and the anaerobic hybrid (AH) reactor. However, these systems have, like the UASB reactor, limited performance with regard to complete treatment (e.g., removal of pathogens). In this respect, a new integrated approach for the anaerobic treatment of domestic wastewater is suggested. This approach combines a UASB reactor and a conventional completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR) for the treatment of the wastewater low in SS and sedimented primary sludge, respectively. The principal advantages of the proposed system are energy recovery from organic waste in an environmentally friendly way; lowering the negative effect of suspended solids in the UASB reactor; production of a high quality effluent for irrigation; and prevention of odour problems.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to investigate the influence of liquid flow modulation of trickle bed reactors (TBR) on biological hydrogen methanation (BHM). The modulation promises to improve the gas‐liquid mass transfer and has already been demonstrated in trickle bed reactors of other fields of application. Therefore, the influence of four different circulation intervals with pauses from two to 1,440 min was investigated in TBR for BHM. The results showed that as pause intervals without sprinkling became longer, the methane content increased from 88.61 ± 1.58 vol‐% at a circulation interval of 2 min to up to 97.19 ± 0.46 vol‐% at a circulation interval of 1,440 min. The analysis of the process liquid indicated a stable biological process at any trial phase. This study demonstrated that the performance of TBR on BHM can be significantly improved by liquid flow modulation, thus significantly reducing operating costs.  相似文献
