Summary Agapanthus umbelatus pollen tubes (PTs) display a number of different growth patterns when germinated in an electric field of 750 mV· mm–1. When pollen is germinated near the cathode (82.44% of orientation to the cathode side) or near the anode (55.35% of orientation to the anode), growth is oriented parallel to the applied field but when germinated at an intermediate position, there is random growth. An increase and decrease in the orientation rates as well as reversion of the polarized growth were observed when the growth conditions were systematically altered. These findings reflect the influence of different ionic currents present in the germination medium. These ionic currents induce the formation of ionic gradients, which were monitored by ion-HPLC. The individual omission of Ca2+, K+, Mg2+ and Cl suppresses or alters the oriented growth pattern. 为深入理解高山林线原始林中优势树种的空间结构特征和种间关系,以青藏高原东缘林线杜鹃-岷江冷杉原始林1 hm2样地调查数据为基础,采用成对相关函数g(r)函数,分析了优势种岷江冷杉(Abies faxoniana)和凝毛杜鹃(Rhododendron agglutinatum)各径级的空间分布格局和各径级间的空间关联性。结果表明:岷江冷杉和凝毛杜鹃径级分布连续,呈倒"J"型,均为进展种群。小尺度上,对于岷江冷杉活立木(小树+中树+大树)、小树、中树为显著聚集分布,大树为均匀分布,死树则为随机分布;凝毛杜鹃活立木(小树+中树+大树)、小树、中树、大树、死树均为显著聚集分布。小尺度上随径级增大岷江冷杉的分布格局从聚集分布趋于均匀分布。岷江冷杉大树与其小树的空间关联验证了Janzen-Connell假说中的距离制约效应。通过验证接受了随机死亡假说,发现种内的密度制约效应不明显。两个树种的枯立木对凝毛杜鹃小树均表现为排斥关系,而对岷江冷杉小树表现为相互独立的关系。两个优势种总体表现为相互独立,但种间不同径级间的空间关联性各异。  相似文献

Summary Cortical microtubules (MTs) were visualized in root cortex cells ofHyacinthus orientalis L. using immunofluorescence techniques. Cellular MT orientation was determined adjacent to radial longitudinal and transverse walls of root tip, uncontracted, contracting, and fully contracted regions. As seen in longitudinal views, MTs formed parallel, apparently helical arrays which were oriented transversely, axially or obliquely depending upon the region. Transverse sectional views showed that MTs adjacent to transverse cell walls formed a variety of patterns which varied with developmental stage and cell location. Microtubules were oriented in crisscross or parallel arrays. The parallel arrays were oriented either parallel, perpendicular or oblique to the radius of the root. There was an apparent temporal progression in MT reorientation from outer cortical to inner cortical cell layers. A resultant progression of reoriented cell growth could account for root contraction. These findings corroborate earlier electron microscopic observations of changing MT orientation accompanying root contraction, and provide cytological evidence to test mathematical and biophysical models of the mechanics of cell expansion.Abbreviations MT microtubule - MF microfibril - MTSB microtubule stabilizing buffer - PBS phosphate buffered saline  相似文献

In this study the effects of potassium iodide on the growth and metabolite accumulation of Nitzschia closterium (Ehr.) W. Smith and Phaedactylum tricornutum Bolin were investigated to assess its possible application to the mass culture of the two diatoms in open environment, extensive systems. The results indicated that supplementation of potassium iodide at a concentration of 1000 mg L−1 resulted in a reduction of the induction phase in cultures of N. closterium and P. tricornutum and led to an increase in the accumulation of biomass and extracellular polymeric substances. Conversely, the addition of potassium iodide, at all concentrations tested, showed no obvious effect on the fatty acid profiles of the two diatoms, particularly in the content of eicosapentaenoic and decosahexaenoic acid. Potassium iodide was also found to inhibit the growth of Dunaliella salina, Cryptomonas sp. and Chlorella sp. at minimum inhibitory concentrations of 356.8, 475.9 and 696.2 mg L−1, respectively. It also inhibited bacteria, including species isolated from the two diatom cultures, at a minimum concentration of 400 mg L−1. These results suggest that potassium iodide is an effective agent for inhibiting the proliferation of certain flagellate and non-flagellate algae, and bacteria, thus forming a favorable environment for diatoms to proliferate and consequently improving accumulation of biomass and EPS. These properties of potassium iodide provide a possible solution for preventing contamination from flagellate and non-flagellate algae in mass culture of the two diatoms without causing significant changes in their fatty acid composition.  相似文献

Patch selection for cobbles covered by different food types, with and without deposited sediment, by two common New Zealand stream invertebrates, the snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum (Hydrobiidae) and the mayfly Deleatidium sp. (Leptophlebiidae), was quantified. Each taxa was exposed to cobbles covered by (1) filamentous green algae (FGA) or diatoms, and (2) diatoms or heterotrophic biofilms. Two cobbles of each food type were used in each trial, one of which was contaminated by deposited sediment. All cobbles were embedded in plaster in small basins to prevent animals hiding under them, and a known number of animals placed into each basin. The location of each animal was recorded over time, with some observations being made during darkness to see whether this influenced animal movement. More Potamopyrgus were found on cobbles covered by FGA than cobbles covered by diatoms. Sediment-contaminated cobbles covered with FGA also supported more snails than uncontaminated cobbles covered with diatoms. More Potamopyrgus were found on cobbles covered by diatoms than biofilms, and sediment reduced their preference for both these foods. More Deleatidium nymphs were found on diatom-covered cobbles than FGA-covered cobbles. Sediment reduced the preference of Deleatidium for diatoms, but more animals were found on cobbles with sediment-contaminated diatoms than uncontaminated FGA. Patch selection was similar between cobbles covered by either diatoms or biofilms, but sediment reduced the preference of both these foods to Deleatidium. More Deleatidium were recorded on bare plaster during darkness, suggesting they were more mobile at night and searching for new habitats. These results help explain the common occurrence of Potamopyrgus in streams draining developed catchments where FGA blooms and deposited sediment are common, and of Deleatidium in streams draining less developed catchments where FGA and deposited sediment are uncommon.  相似文献

As food of planktivorous fish and likely good predictors of natural perturbations, members of the family Calanidae are recognised to be key species in ecosystems worldwide. The distribution and seasonal relative abundance of the Calanidae species occurring in the Argentine Sea were reviewed from published and unpublished data collected over the last three decades. Species are also figured in order to elucidate any possible taxonomic uncertainty. Calanoides cf. carinatus, Calanus australis and Calanus simillimus are the most abundant calanids in the region. The former two species typically inhabit inner and middle shelf waters decreasing offshore, while Calanus simillimus is distributed in the middle and outer shelf, its abundance increasing towards the shelf-break. The southern limit of the distribution of Calanoides cf. carinatus appears to be 46° S. Calanus australis is the most common large copepod in coastal and inner shelf waters off southern Patagonia. Neocalanus tonsus and Calanoides patagoniensis are a much rarer species. The latter is recorded in the southwestern Atlantic, for the first time, immediately east of Magallanes Strait and the Beagle Channel. The taxonomic status and worldwide biogeographic distribution of the region's calanids are briefly described and the patterns identified off Argentina are discussed in relation to the major hydrographic characteristics.  相似文献

The chlorophyll a content and two operational fractions of carbohydrate (water extractable and EDTA extractable) were measured every three months during one year along transects on a tidal flat in the Ems-Dollard estuary (The Netherlands). Chlorophyll a was used as an indicator of microphytobenthos biomass, which was composed predominantly of epipelic diatoms. Both carbohydrate fractions correlated significantly with chlorophyll a. EDTA extractable carbohydrates were more resistant towards degradation than the water extractable fraction. During most of the year, concentrations of chlorophyll a and carbohydrates were low, but in June, high concentrations of up to 90 g chlorophyll a/g sediment were found in a narrow zone running parallel to the channel. Maximum concentrations of water extractable carbohydrates and EDTA extractable carbohydrates ranged between 800–1200 and 600–800 g/g sediment, respectively. The mud content was high (± 90%) at the margin of the tidal flat. This was not limited to the growth season of the diatoms, but was observed throughout the year. This indicated that the high mud content at the mudflat margin was mainly caused by hydrodynamic factors, and not by biostabilization. In June, exceptionally high diatom densities were found in sediment with a high mud content. There was only minor evidence that biostabilization by epipelic diatoms lead to a further increase in the mud content of the sediment.  相似文献

Synopsis Fishes of the family Nototheniidae (Pisces: Perciformes) dominate antarctic fish communities and have radiated to fill diverse niches. The most southern species must operate under an extended austral night and under thick sea ice, yet have eyes more typical of shallow coastal fishes. In winter, the eyes are probably useless, except for detecting bioluminescence. I compared the responses of four species to hydromechanical and tactile signals: two benthivores,Trematomus bernacchii andT. pennellii, a benthic planktivore,T. nicolai, andPagothenia borchgrevinki, which feeds near the ice undersurface and within ice cracks. The planktivores have dorsal mouths, with eyes oriented dorsally or laterally (Pagothenia); their lateral line canals and receptor organs are larger dorsally. The benthivores have more ventrally oriented mouths and eyes. All species responded to hydromechanical cues to the head, but only the two benthivores responded to trunk hydromechanical stimuli or tactile stimuli to the ventral trunk or pelvic fins. Possibly responses to plankton along the trunk are of little use if a reorientation washes pelagic prey away. In responding to trunk stimuli,T. bernacchii reorients its head to the target in two stages by slowly pivoting on its pelvic fins. In contrast,T. pennellii reorients in a single quick flip. It is argued that, becauseT. bernacchii has wider canals thanT. pennellii, it must move more slowly to reduce self-generated noise. It is likely that further studies of winter diet and prey behavior may reveal the relative advantages of the two repositioning styles.  相似文献

Algal communities were compared among benthic and net plankton samples from Cape Maclear, Lake Malai. In the cool mixing season (from May to August), rocks were overgrown byCladophora orCalothrix, accompanied by the diatomsRhopalodia, Cymbella, andNavicula. These diatoms, together withEpithemia andCocconeis, were epiphytic onCladophora and macrophytes. In sandy areas, the common diatoms wereRhopalodia, Fragilaria, Epithemia, Navicula, Surirella, andMelosira.In all phytoplankton samples, taken with a 10 µm mesh net, cyanophyte cells were the most common (70 to 80%), especially those ofOscillatoria. Biomass, however, was dominated byPeridinium from November to April and byAnabaena andOscillatoria from September to April when the mixolimnion was stratified. Among the chlorophytes,Oedogonium was the most common, especially from May into December whenPleodorina became more common.Diatoms dominated the biomass in the mixing season (May to September):Stephanodiscus in May, followed byMelosira nyassensis and lanceolateNitzschia species from mid-June through August. For the rest of the year the epilimnion was stratified and theseNitzschia species were virtually the only diatoms present.Benthic and planktonic communities share few taxa: benthic taxa never made up more than 2% of cells in offshore tows. This conclusion contrasts with previous reports, especially regardingSurirella. Consequently, an abundance of benthic taxa in sediment cores may be interpreted as lower lake level if sediment redistribution can be excluded. The seasonality of the planktonic diatoms is compatible with current ecological hypotheses, and therefore increases their value as paleolimnological indicators.  相似文献

Summary The morphogenesis of the different types of labiate processes is compared among three species of centric diatoms [Stephanopyxis turns (Greville) Ralfs,Odontella sinensis (Greville) Grunow, andOdontella aurita (Lyngbye) Agardh]. In all species, a cytoplasmic structure,i.e., the labiate process apparatus, situated close to the developing labiate process, appears before the labiate process begins to form and disappears upon its maturation. Summary Ultrastructural observations on monoplastidic root tip cells ofIsoetes andSelaginella demonstrate two important phenomena associated with preprophasic preparation for mitotic cell division, 1. the preprophase band and 2. precise orientation of the dividing plastid relative to the preprophase band. Both of these phenomena accurately predict the future plane of cell division. The plastid divides in a plane parallel to the spindle and each cell inherits a single plastid which caps the telophase nucleus. When succesive transverse divisions occur, the plastid migrates prior to prophase from a position near an old transverse wall to a lateral position in the cell. The plastid is oriented with its median constriction precisely intersected by the plane of the preprophase band. When a longitudinal division follows a transverse division, the plastid remains in its position adjacent to an old transverse wall where it is bisected by the plane of the longitudinally oriented preprophase band microtubules.  相似文献

In the Berre lagoon, a large brackish and swallow area near Marseille, the environmental factors (temperature, salinity, oxygen, suspended particulate matter and chlorophyll) generally display strong space and time variations. The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and the copepod Acartia tonsa constitute the bulk of the zooplankton population during all the year. Their space and time distributions were studied in 23 stations distributed all over the lagoon, during four seasonal cruises (February, June, October, November), at surface and bottom layers. There is no marked difference in the horizontal and vertical distribution of the two species, (except in November when rotifers were prevailing in surface and copepods at depth) and in their time occurence. When the four series of data are pooled, correlation analysis show that A.tonsa is positively correlated with temperature, salinity and seston and negatively to oxygen and chlorophyll. B. plicatilis is positively correlated with temperature and seston, but also with chlorophyll, while salinity has a negative effect. The specific eggs number of both species is chlorophyll dependent. Considering seasonal cruises separately, some differences appear in the sense or the significance of these different correlations. The respective distribution of the two species is only partly dependent on the variation of the environmental factors: most of the variance remains unexplained, as indicated by the result of a stepwise multiple regression analysis using the most significant factors (temperature, salinity and oxygen explain 33 to 42% of the variance in Acartia, while temperature and salinity explain 27 to 28% of the variance in Brachionus). Thus, internal behavioral factors could also play a role in the distribution of organisms, particularly in some cases of aggregations of organisms observed during this study. As the two species occupied the same space habitat most of the year, they are potentially in competition for food. A way to optimize the food utilization could be the time separation of their feeding activity, nocturnal in Acartia and diurnal in Brachionus. Another way could be selective feeding upon food particles depending on their size (Brachionus being able to use finer particles than Acartia) or their quality (Brachionus being more herbivorous than Acartia) as demonstrated in some grazing experiments carried out in parallel.  相似文献

This study reveals disjunct distribution patterns of certain plant species on zinc-rich soils in the Zawar mines region near Udaipur. Ten plant species have high constancy and fidelity values on zinc-rich soils in comparison to normal soil. The plant community composed of these species has been named Impatiens balsamina-Triumfetta pentandra association. We examined the patterns of distribution, vectors of introduction, and potential ecological impacts of freshwater exotic species in Texas over the last 45 years. Currently, five species of exotic gastropods are established: channeled-type applesnail (Pomacea insularum), red-rim melania (Melanoides tuberculatus), quilted melania (Tarebia granifera), giant rams-horn snail (Marisa cornuarietis), and Chinese mysterysnail (Cipangopaludina chinensis). In contrast to the northern part of the US, where shipping appears to be the most important vector for the introduction of aquatic invasive species, aquarium and ornamental trade dominated among unintentional vectors of introduction of all freshwater exotics in Texas, resulting in different patterns of distribution, spread, and ecological impacts. The rate of spread of exotic gastropods in Texas varied from 39 waterbodies colonized over 18 years for P. insularum to only three waterbodies during last 45 years for C. chinensis. Four of five exotic gastropods were found in highly vulnerable aquifer-fed springs and rivers, which contain numerous endemic and endangered species. The fifth species, Pomacea insularum, is an agricultural pest. Potential negative ecological effects of exotic gastropods include impacts on wetlands and wetland restoration, competitive exclusion of native snails, and the introduction of exotic parasites, trematodes, which could infect fish and waterfowl, including federally protected species. The cheilostome bryozoan Antarctothoa bougainvillei (d’Orbigny) is the most frequent epibiont on the ribbon-like red alga Hymenena laciniata (Hooker f. & Harvey) Kylin in San Sebastián Bay (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina). Twenty-one thalli and 1,484 colonies were examined to analyse the relationship between both species. In most cases, number and area of colonies did not differ significantly at both sides of the thallus. Ancestrulae (i.e., founder zooids originating colonies by asexual budding) were mostly oriented facing the algal growing edge. Colonies were more frequent on central than on marginal zones of the thalli. The population of A. bougainvillei was mainly composed of very small colonies (<10 mm2). Larger colonies predominated and intraspecific competition was more intense near the basal portions of the thalli. Fecundity (number of ovicells) increased at a significantly higher rate in colonies with margins obstructed by conspecific neighbours than in free-growing colonies. Colonies were significantly larger on somatic than on reproductive algal tissues. As total and reproductive surfaces covered by colonies of A. bougainvillei were on average very low (4.43% and 0.53%, respectively), this epibiont is not supposed to produce a negative effect on H. laciniata. The effect of seed aggregation and distance from conspecific trees on seed predation was experimentally examined for two neotropical tree species, Macoubea guianensis (Apocynaceae) and Pouteria sp. (Sapotaceae) in a lowland tropical rain forest in northeastern Peru. Results of these experiments are discussed in the context of the Janzen-Connell model (Janzen 1970; Connell 1971), which predicts decreased seed survival near parent trees due to either density-or distance-responsive mortality, and Howe's model (Howe 1989) which predicts that trees with seeds dispersed in clumps (aggregated) will not suffer density-dependent predation, and will have higher survival of seeds near the parent tree than other trees. We also examined whether predation on seeds of these species was affected by seed placement in or near 30-m-wide strips regenerating after clear-cutting. Both species appeared to be mammal-dispersed but differed in how frugivores handled seeds, seed size, overall fruit crop size, and gemination time. Neither of the two species studied appeared to suffer seed predation in a manner predicted by the Janzen-Connell model, and patterns of seed predation for only one of the species was similar to predictions of Howe's model. For neither species did seed predation along the edge of, or in the center of, regenerating clear cuts differ from predation 15 m into the primary forest. For Pouteria, seed predation in and near regnerating strips was significantly greater than around forest trees, but the opposite pattern held for Macoubea. Overall, seed predation was much greater on Macoubea. The difference in seed predation for these two species was most likely a result of differences in the types of seed predators that attacked these two species.  相似文献

Summary Initially non-polar protoplasts of the green algaMougeotia will regenerate to re-establish their original cylindrical cell shape. The orientation of the growth axis of regenerating protoplasts held in agarose was independent of both the direction of incident white light and gravity. Protoplasts elongated parallel to applied DC electric fields of approx. 0.2 Vcm–1 (1 mV/protoplast) and greater, with an increasing percentage oriented with increasing field strength. At the maximum field strength used (10 mV/cell), 53% of protoplasts were oriented within +- 10° of the 0/180° axis of the field. In untreated controls, the orientation of elongation was random. Protoplast survival was unaffected by field treatment. Some protoplasts (up to 37% in 10 mV/cell fields) formed outgrowths towards the cathode and occasionally towards the anode. Regenerating protoplasts in fields displayed the normal sequence of microtubule reorganization. This means that the positioning of the ordered symmetrical array of microtubules centred on two foci that appears within 3 to 4 h, and the subsequent organization of microtubules by 8 to 12 h into a band that intersects both foci and which is transverse to the axis of elongation (Galway and Hardham 1986), may be controlled by externally applied electric fields. In the region of this microtubule band, the applied field causes the plasma membrane to be stretched parallel to the field (Bryant and Wolfe 1987). The somatic chromosomes ofTriticum turgicum var.durum cv. Langdon andT. dicoccoides (AABB tetraploids),T. timopheevii, andT. araraticum (AAGG tetraploids) were assayed for distribution patterns of a highly repeated 120bp DNA sequence by in situ hybridization. The repeated sequence appears to be an ancient sequence shared withSecale andAegilops. The distribution patterns of the chromosomes were compared to the patterns of the A and B genome chromosomes ofT. aestivum cv. Chinese Spring (AABBDD hexaploid).T. turgidum andT. dicoccoides were observed to have identical in situ hybridization patterns. In both species, nine chromosomes with a total of 21 sites of hybridization were observed. The pattern, with few exceptions, was identical to that of Chinese Spring.T. araraticum andT. timopheevii were observed to have different patterns. InT. araraticum, six chromosomes with 21 total hybridization sites are present while inT. timopheevii nine chromosomes with 19 total sites exist. Major differences in hybridization patterns were observed between the B and G genomes. The divergence of the tetraploid wheats in this study appears to have resulted in changes in location, not in amount, of the ancient repeated sequence.  相似文献

Summary The somatic epithelia of Dysdercus and Apis follicles were analyzed by electron microscopy, and the patterns of F-actin and microtubules were studied by fluorescence microscopy. The epithelia in both species differ considerably in shape and in the organization of the cytoskeleton. During previtellogenic stages, the epithelium consists of columnar-shaped cells with small (Dysdercus) or no (Apis) lateral intercellular spaces. During vitellogenesis, the follicle cells round up; the intercellular spaces increase in size in Dysdercus follicles, whereas in Apis follicles they remain small. Along the basal surface of the follicle cells, there are conspicuous parallel bundles of microfilaments perpendicular to the anteroposterior axis of the follicles. In the honeybee, these microfilament bundles are present in long filopodia, most of which are embedded in thickenings of the basement membrane and extend over the surfaces of neighbouring cells. In the cotton bug, the basal surface of the follicle cells is thrown into parallel folds. The microfilament bundles are located just underneath the cell membrane where the folds contact the basement membrane. In the polar regions of the Dysdercus follicle, the epithelial cells become flat and adhere to each other without forming intercellular spaces. The basement membrane is particularly thick in the polar areas; this has also been observed in Apis follicles around the intercellular bridge connecting oocyte and nurse cells.  相似文献

Alkane distribution patterns were determined in the epicuticular wax of the leaves of 13 species and a hybrid fromEricaceae and one species ofEmpetrum (Empetraceae). As chemotaxonomic indicators, the results are of limited use only. The most uniform genus wasRhododendron, the most heterogeneousVaccinium.
