Tricyrtis macrantha Maxim. (Liliaceae), an endemic species to Japan, is illustrated. It is distributed in a small area in Shikoku (Kochi Prefecture), and grows on limestone cliffs. Tricyrtis macrantha and its allied species, T. macranthopsis Masam., distributed in Kii Peninsula in western Honshu, and T. ishiiana (Kitag. & T. Koyama) Ohwi & Okuyama, distributed in Pacific coast side of central Honshu, comprise one natural group.  相似文献

Genetic diversities were examined using six microsatellite markers amplifiable in three rare and one widespread species of Tricyrtis section Flavae, which are endemic to Japan. Contrary to a general expectation, the three rare species, Tricyrtis flava, Tricyrtis ohsumiensis and Tricyrtis perfoliata, have comparable genetic variation at the species level to that of the widespread Tricyrtis nana. This is probably because T. nana has not sufficiently recovered genetic diversity from the bottleneck at speciation or because recent range contractions have occurred in the three rare species. Genetic diversity at the population level was smaller in the putative selfing species T. nana than in the other three outcrossing species. Compared with a preceding study using allozyme markers, the genetic diversity in microsatellite loci was considerably larger, probably resulting from higher mutation rates at the microsatellite loci. Owing to the high genetic diversity of the microsatellite markers, genetic differentiation among populations could be estimated even in T. nana with little allozyme polymorphism.  相似文献

The distribution of two sedge species was studied in two mires which differ in abiotic environments and in distribution ofPhragmites australis. Carex lasiocarpa var.occultans dominated in nutrient-poor valley mire, andCarex thunbergii var.appendiculata dominated in nutrient-rich flood plain subject to water fluctuations.Phragmites australis grew well in nutrient-rich conditions. The distribution ofC. lasiocarpa showed a strong negative correlation withP. australis coverage, whereasC. thunbergii coverage was not affected byP. australis. The leaf area per dry leaf mass (specific leaf area: SLA) ofC. thunbergii increased with shading byP. australis, but that ofC. lasiocarpa was stable. The SLA flexibility ofC. thunbergii to light interception might enable this species to invadeP. australis patches in nutrient-rich environments. The residual nutrient ratio of nitrogen and phosphorus (the ratio of the residual nutrient content at the end of the growing season to peak nutrient content) in the vegetative ramet ofC. thunbergii was 1.7 times higher than that ofC. lasiocarpa. This low residual ratio may indicate effective nutrient recovery to storage organs. The effective nutrient recovery inC. lasiocarpa might enable this species to grow even in nutrient-poor environments. However, it may be difficult forC. lasiocarpa to expand its habitat to nutrient-rich areas whereP. australis dominates as it is not shade tolerant.  相似文献

Carex lasiocarpa and C. pellita (sect. Carex) share a very similar morphology and have overlapping ranges in North America, but are found in different habitats characterized by contrasting soil types and pH. We studied allozyme variation and chromosome numbers to assess genetic differentiation between the two taxa. Both principal components analysis on the allele frequencies from 12 putative enzyme-coding loci and cluster analysis of genetic identities separated 51 sampled populations into two groups that were consistent with recognized structural differences between C. lasiocarpa and C. pellita. Mean within-group genetic identities were 0.95 for C. lasiocarpa and 0.93 for C. pellita; mean between-group genetic identity was 0.81. With the exception of two rare alleles, the alleles of C. pellita were a subset of those found in C. lasiocarpa. Principal components analysis of measurements of structural characters from voucher specimens representing 46 populations also separated the two species with minimal overlap. Meiotic squashes of microsporocytes revealed haploid chromosome numbers of 38 and 38 + 1 for C. lasiocarpa and 41 and 40 + 1 for C. pellita. These data support the continued recognition of the two taxa as distinct species, and suggest that C. pellita may be a daughter species still in the process of divergence from C. lasiocarpa.  相似文献

Sanjiang Plain is the largest freshwater marsh in China, where plant zonation along water-level gradients is a common phenomenon. The aim of this experiment was to identify the role of water level and nutrient availability on plant zonation in the plain. Growth and root morphology of three perennial emergent macrophyte species were investigated by growing in two water levels (0.1 and 10.0 cm, relative to soil surface) and in two levels of nutrient supply (0 and 0.5 g slow-release fertilizer per container). In the plain, Carex lasiocarpa typically occurs at low elevations, Glyceria spiculosa at medial elevations, and Deyeuxia angustifolia at high elevations. The relative growth rate was the highest in C. lasiocarpa and the lowest in D. angustifolia in the 10.0-cm water level. Among the three species, only total biomass of D. angustifolia was affected by water level, and decreased with increasing water level. High nutrient supply led to increased total biomass in C. lasiocarpa and G. spiculosa. High water level led to an increased root diameter in G. spiculosa and a decreased root length in C. lasiocarpa. In the 10.0-cm water level, low nutrient supply led to thinner roots in D. angustifolia, but resulted in an increased specific root length (SRL) in C. lasiocarpa and root diameter in G. spiculosa. Water-level effect on root porosity was only observed in G. spiculosa, and nutrient amendment did not influence root porosity in all the species. These data indicate that both nutrient and water level are important factors regulating plant distribution pattern in the Sanjiang Plain, because both C. lasiocarpa and G. spiculosa are relatively sensitive to nutrient supply whereas D. angustifolia is sensitive to water level. In planta transformation methods have opened up the possibility of transforming plant species for which no regeneration protocols currently exist. In this study, the suitability of the germ-line transformation method developed for Arabidopsis thaliana was examined for four taxa in the Brassicaceae that have not been previously transformed: Arabidopsis griffithiana, Arabidopsis lasiocarpa, Arabidopsis petraea and Capsella bursa-pastoris. Numerous transformants were obtained for A. lasiocarpa. Transformation of A. lasiocarpa was confirmed at the phenotypic and molecular levels for stably transformed lines and for backcrossed lines segregating the T-DNA insert. Parameters affecting transformation efficiency of A. lasiocarpa were also explored. As with A. thaliana, sucrose and surfactant in the inoculation medium are required for high levels of transformation, although the suitable concentrations of these are different for A. lasiocarpa. Other components present in earlier versions of the inoculation medium had little effect on transformation efficiency. Vacuum infiltration (rather than simple floral dipping) led to higher rates of transformation and did not seriously affect seed production in A. lasiocarpa. Identification of species susceptible to germ-line transformation will aid in determining the factors important for applying this technology to more recalcitrant species.  相似文献

Abstract Phosphate uptake by excised roots of Carex species from a range of oligotrophic to eutrophic swamps was investigated. The range of species from oligotrophic to eutrophic is: C.rostrata Stokes, C.limosa L., C.lasiocarpa Ehrh., C.diandra Schrank, C.hudsonii A.Benn. and C.acutiformis Ehrh. All species showed two phases for Pi uptake in the Pi concentration range of 0.01 – 50 μM. In phase 1, C.rostrata and C.lasiocarpa had relatively high Vmax:s and Km:s, whereas the species from richer areas had intermediate values. The lowest Vmax and Km values were found in C.limosa and C.hudsonii. In phase 2, apart from the high Vmax and Km values found for C.lasiocarpa, the kinetic constants showed little variation, indicating a similar Pi carrier mechanism for all the species. Results on phosphate uptake and leakage are discussed against the phosphate requirement of each species in its specific habitat, and against the literature data of agricultural crops, which generally show a much lower affinity for phosphate uptake.  相似文献

Summary The study of macroscopic plant remains (fruits and seeds) from the neolithic settlement Burgäschisee South (Villaret-Von Rochow, 1967) raised the question whether the origin of the rootlet peat (Radizellentorf) in the lower level of the archeological layer is partly due to a sedge fen vegetation with Carex lasiocarpa and Equisetum palustre as dominants. Vogt's definition of the archeological layer (Kulturschicht) stresses its complex character; and we think that organic matter from types of swamp vegetation upon which a settlement was located may be found not underneath but within the archeological layer itself. But these organic matters may easily be destroyed by fire.In 1956 Dr. W. Lüdi and the author studied numerous peat cliffs located in different parts of Switzerland. From these studies it appears that the vegetation types of Carex lasiocarpa, in some localities associated with Scheuchzeria palustris peat, had been of rather widespread occurrence in Swiss mires during the boreal, atlantic and subboreal period. These mires sometimes developed into raised bog communities.The ecology and variation of pH of some of the few recent Carex lasiocarpa swamps is briefly discussed. Characteristic swellings of rootlets of Carex lasiocarpa containing hyphae seem to indicate mycorrhiza-like association with some fungus.

Question: How does regeneration response to a host‐specific, high‐severity, infrequent Dendroctonus rufipennis outbreak differ from our conceptualization of high‐severity, infrequent/low‐severity, frequent disturbance regimes in Picea engelmanniiAbies lasiocarpa communities? Location: Southern Utah, USA. Methods: One hundred and seven plots across a high‐elevation P. engelmannii forest were sampled to reconstruct pre‐outbreak overstory and seedling bank densities, and calculate their associated metrics of diversity. Decade of establishment by seedling bank trees indicated “chronic” and “pulse” regenerators. Results: The post‐outbreak overstory and seedling bank were dominated by A. lasiocarpa. Although Pinus flexilis, Pinus ponderosa, Picea pungens, and Psuedotsuga menziesii were present in the overstory, they were virtually absent in the seedling bank. Seedling bank recruitment of A. lasiocarpa and P. engelmannii has been occurring chronically for at least the last ~205 and ~152 years, respectively. A pulse response of seedling bank Populus tremuloides was apparent; however, results were complicated by intense ungulate browsing. Conclusions: Despite some similarities to the high‐severity, infrequent/low‐severity, frequent conceptualization of regeneration response to disturbance, the high‐severity D. rufipennis outbreak is best described by explicitly considering host specificity and severity. Although, the outbreak simultaneously promoted both a pulse of P. tremuloides and a release of chronically regenerated A. lasiocarpa, the P. tremuloides response was generally masked by ungulate browsing, and the regeneration response came overwhelmingly from the A. lasiocarpa seedling bank. In this landscape, once dominated by P. engelmannii, the chronically regenerating seedling bank, typically thought to take advantage of canopy gaps associated with low‐severity disturbances, is poised to dominate forest reorganization in response to the host‐specific outbreak.  相似文献

We compared genetic variability and clonal diversity in the closely related sedges Carex lasiocarpa and C. pellita using allozyme markers at 12 loci. Both species produce spreading rhizomes, occur in open habitats, and can form large clones; C. lasiocarpa primarily along lakeshores, or in bogs, fens, or marshes, and C. pellita more commonly along riverbanks and ditches or in wet meadows. Polymorphism was high in both species, similar to that of other rhizomatous Carex and to other species with comparable growth forms and life histories. Total gene diversity was higher for C. lasiocarpa (HT = 0.266) than for C. pellita (HT = 0.248), but the coefficient of differentiation among populations was lower. Rare alleles usually occurred as heterozygotes rather than homozygotes, and significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were found at few loci, suggesting that both species are predominantly outcrossing. Mean clone size, diversity, and evenness were not significantly different between the two species, although populations varied from monoclonal to those where nearly every sampled shoot belonged to a different clone. No significant differences in genetic variation or clone size of C. pellita were found when comparisons were made between groups based on climate (warmer vs. cooler) or successional stage (pioneer vs. established). However, within C. lasiocarpa, genetic variability decreased and clone size increased in cooler climates and at established sites.  相似文献

Vesicles and hyphae typical of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM) were common in seedlings of Pseudotsuga menziesii, Abies lasiocarpa and Tsuga mertensiana growing in openings where herbaceous hosts of these fungi were common. Seedlings of A. lasiocarpa, Tsuga heterophylla, and T. mertensiana growing under closed forest canopies also had vesicles but at a much lower incidence than seedlings in the openings. The Pinaceae are generally assumed to be ectomycorrhizal, but Glomus-type colonizations occurred on the same seedlings as the ectomycorrhizae. The ecological significance of abundant VAM-type endophytes in otherwise ectomycorrhizal hosts deserves comprehensive study.  相似文献

The depth of penetration of Ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 300 and 320 nm) and visible (680 nm) light was measured in foliage of Abies lasiocarpa and Picea engelmannii using a fibre-optic microprobe. Measurements were made on foliage at four times during development: needles were sampled from within expanding buds (in bud); within 72 h of emergence from the bud scales (emergent); from elongating branches (elongating); and from foliage that emerged the previous summer (mature). Light attenuation in pre-emergent needles of both species was steep and showed strong wavelength dependence. Short wavelength 300-nm light was attenuated strongly in the developing epidermal layer, but a significant proportion of this potentially damaging UV-B radiation penetrated into the mesophyll. For A. lasiocarpa and P. engelmannii, 99% attenuation of 300-nm light occurred at 51 and 96 μm, respectively, well within the mesophyll. At this stage, however, the bud scales were opaque to light below 400nm. As the epidermal cell walls and cuticle continued to develop and chlorophyll accumulated following emergence from the bud scales, light attenuation, particularly of UV-B radiation, increased. Although no UV-B is transmitted through the epidermis-hypodermis of mature needles, small but measurable quantities of 300- and 320-nm light were measured in the photosynthetic mesophyll of post-emergent and elongating needles. Thus, shortly after emergence from the bud scales in mid-June to mid-July, when incident UV doses are highest, absorption of UV-B radiation by potentially sensitive chromophores in the mesophyll may disrupt physiological and developmental processes in these species. Soluble UV-absorbing pigments accumulated during needle maturation for P. engelmannii but not A. lasiocarpa, suggesting that, for A. lasiocarpa at least, the development of effective UV screening properties in the epidermis may not be related to the induction of soluble flavonoids.  相似文献

Summary Small trees ofAbies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt. andPicea engelmannii Parry were collected along two elevational transects in the central Rocky Mountains, and the effects of low temperature on their root respiration activity were measured after growth in cool and warm soil temperature treatments.Picea engelmannii roots respired significantly faster than those ofA. lasiocarpa, and trees of both species collected from high elevations respired significantly faster than those from lower elevations. The mean Q10 and mean activation energy of respiration were 2.0 and 47.2 kJ mol–1, respectively; they did not differ between transects, species, elevations of collection, or the soil temperature treatments. The results suggest ecotypic differentiation has occurred along these transects resulting in higher root respiration rates at higher elevations.  相似文献

Twelve polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized from the threatened toad lily Tricyrtis flava. The number of alleles ranged from three to 17, and the observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.35 to 0.96 and from 0.50 to 0.93, respectively, in a population of T. flava. We also tested cross‐species amplifications of the markers in three other species of Trycyrtis sect. Flavae. Most of 12 markers developed for T. flava were successfully amplified in the species of sect. Flavae and will be useful for population genetic studies of these species.  相似文献

The responses of soil enzyme activity of freshwater marsh, microbial biomass carbon (MBC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and aboveground biomass to water gradients were studied with Carex lasiocarpa pot culture experiment. The relationships between soil enzyme activity and MBC, DOC and aboveground biomass were discussed. The water gradients were W1, 15 cm; W2, ?5 cm; W3, ?5–5 cm; W4, submerged. The results indicated that acid phosphatase, invertase and urease activities were decreased with the increase of water level, while catalase activity was increased with moisture content increasing. Drying-wetting alternation (W3) increased soil enzyme activities if compared with W1. MBC content followed the order of W3 > W1 > W2 > W4, and the activities of invertase, urease and catalase were significantly positively correlated with MBC (p < 0.05). DOC content presented the order of W4 > W1 > W3 > W2, and the activities of urease and acid phosphatase were most significantly negatively correlated with DOC (p < 0.01). In addition, drying-wetting alternation promoted the growth of Carex lasiocarpa. When water submerged plants, the growth of Carex lasiocarpa was significantly inhibited. The aboveground biomass was positively related to soil enzyme activities. There were close relationships between the activities of invertase, urease and catalase and the growth situation of Carex lasiocarpa.  相似文献

Abstract. On the Vecht river plain (western Netherlands), small fens, remnants of a large mesotrophic wetland bordering a moraine, of 1 to 5 ha are found in a man-made matrix of lakes and pastures. The regional position of the fens, local position of sampling sites, composition of the vegetation and local hydrological variables were measured. Polders in the river plain produce a complex hydrology obscuring the regional zonation between moraine and river. Water supply and species composition are determined more by a site's regional than local position. High-productivity reedlands are abundant close to the river. Carex paniculata reedlands receive large amounts of river water, which gives their fen water a high K+ concentration. Low-productivity C. diandra fens and litter fens have their optimum closer to the moraine. C. diandra fens are fed mainly by inflowing nutrient-poor ground- or surface water; litter fens receive primarily rainwater. Nutrients in fen water and in peat are lowest in C. diandra and C. lasiocarpa fens, but do not differ significantly between the communities. In both, iron seems to be more important than calcium in reducing phosphate solubility. Iron richness in the C. diandra fens is caused by present inflows of ground- or surface water, while in C. lasiocarpa fens, which succeed the former, iron richness is the result of historical inflows.  相似文献

There are large temporal and spatial variations of methane (CH4) emissions from natural wetlands. To understand temporal changes of CH4 production potential (MPP), soil samples were collected from a permanently inundated Carex lasiocarpa marsh and a summer inundated Calamagrostis angustifolia marsh over the period from June to October of 2011. MPP, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, abundance and community structure of methanogenic archaea were assessed. In the C. lasiocarpa marsh, DOC concentration, MPP and the methanogen population showed similar seasonal variations and maximal values in September. MPP and DOC in the C. angustifolia marsh exhibited seasonal variations and values peaked during August, while the methanogen population decreased with plant growth. Methanogen abundance correlated significantly (P?=?0.02) with DOC only for the C. lasiocarpa marsh. During the sampling period, the dominant methanogens were the Methanosaetaceae and Zoige cluster I (ZC-Ι) in the C. angustifolia marsh, and Methanomicrobiales and ZC-Ι in the C. lasiocarpa marsh. MPP correlated significantly (P?=?0.04) with DOC and methanogen population in the C. lasiocarpa marsh but only with DOC in the C. angustifolia marsh. Addition of C. lasiocarpa litter enhanced MPP more effectively than addition of C. angustifolia litter, indicating that temporal variation of substrates is controlled by litter deposition in the C. lasiocarpa marsh while living plant matter is more important in the C. angustifolia marsh. This study indicated that there was no apparent shift in the dominant types of methanogen during the growth season in the species-specific freshwater wetlands. Temporal variation of MPP is controlled by substrates and substrate-driven changes in the abundance of methanogenic archaea in the C. lasiocarpa marsh, while MPP depends only on substrate availability derived from root exudates or soil organic matter in the C. angustifolia marsh.  相似文献

For trees, fast growth rates and large size seem to be a fitness benefit because of increased competitiveness, attainment of reproductive size earlier, reduction of generation times, and increased short‐term survival chances. However, fast growth rates and large size entail reduced investment in defenses, lower wood density and mechanical strength, increased hydraulic resistance as well as problems with down‐regulation of growth during periods of stress, all of which may decrease tree longevity. In this study, we investigated the relationship between longevity and growth rates of trees and quantified effects of spatial environmental variation (elevation, slope steepness, aspect, soil depth) on tree longevity. Radial growth rates and longevities were determined from tree‐ring samples of 161 dead trees from three conifer species in subalpine forests of the Colorado Rocky Mountains (Abies lasiocarpa, Picea engelmannii) and the Swiss Alps (Picea abies). For all three species, we found an apparent tradeoff between growth rate to the age of 50 years and longevity (i.e. fast early growth is associated with decreased longevity). This association was particularly pronounced for larger P. engelmannii and P. abies, which attained canopy size, however, there were also significant effects for smaller P. engelmannii and P. abies. For the more shade‐tolerant A. lasiocarpa, tree size did not have any effect. Among the abiotic variables tested only northerly aspect significantly favored longevity of A. lasiocarpa and P. engelmannii. Trees growing on south‐facing aspects probably experience greater water deficits leading to premature tree death, and/or shorter life spans may reflect shorter fire intervals on these more xeric aspects. Empirical evidence from other studies has shown that global warming affects growth rates of trees over large spatial and temporal scales. For moist‐cool subalpine forests, we hypothesize that the higher growth rates associated with global warming may in turn result in reduced tree longevity and more rapid turnover rates.  相似文献

Abies balsamea and A. lasiocarpa are closely related North American balsam firs that are generally thought to hybridize and intergrade where their ranges overlap in west-central Alberta. To test this hypothesis, a series of collections was made from ten populations along an east-west transect between western Saskatchewan and central British Columbia. Each tree was scored for various vegetative and cone characters. The resulting data were analyzed by Principal Components Analysis and Canonical Variates Analysis. Analyses based on vegetative data produced somewhat different results from analyses based on cone data, indicating that vegetative and sexual features of the trees respond to different selection pressures at the ecologically diverse sample sites. The combined results of analyses of vegetative and sexual data indicate that the ten populations do not represent elements of two morphologically distinct taxa. Instead, the results apparently reflect population differentation within a single, regionally variable complex in response to local selection pressures following east-west gene flow. It is recommended that the separate species designations, A. balsamea and A. lasiocarpa, be retained since: 1) present day elements of the complex are evidently derived from separate refugia isolated by the Rocky Mountains during past glacial periods, and 2) gradual morphological differences exist between populations on each side of the Rocky Mountain crest.  相似文献
