* Different portions of tree root systems play distinct functional roles, yet precisely how to distinguish roots of different functions within the branching fine-root system is unclear. * Here, anatomy and mycorrhizal colonization was examined by branch order in 23 Chinese temperate tree species of both angiosperms and gymnosperms forming ectomycorrhizal and arbuscular-mycorrhizal associations. * Different branch orders showed marked differences in anatomy. First-order roots exhibited primary development with an intact cortex, a high mycorrhizal colonization rate and a low stele proportion, thus serving absorptive functions. Second and third orders had both primary and secondary development. Fourth and higher orders showed mostly secondary development with no cortex or mycorrhizal colonization, and thus have limited role in absorption. Based on anatomical traits, it was estimated that c. 75% of the fine-root length was absorptive, and 68% was mycorrhizal, averaged across species. * These results showed that: order predicted differences in root anatomy in a relatively consistent manner across species; anatomical traits associated with absorption and mycorrhizal colonization occurred mainly in the first three orders; the single diameter class approach may have overestimated absorptive root length by 25% in temperate forests.  相似文献

In natural systems, organisms are simultaneously engaged in mutualistic, competitive, and predatory interactions. Theory predicts that species persistence and community stability are feasible when the beneficial effects of mutualisms are balanced by density-dependent negative feedbacks. Enemy-mediated negative feedbacks can foster plant species coexistence in diverse communities, but empirical evidence remains mixed. Disparity between theoretical expectations and empirical results may arise from the effects of mutualistic mycorrhizal fungi. Here, we build a multiprey species/predator model combined with a bidirectional resource exchange system, which simulates mutualistic interactions between plants and fungi. To reach population persistence, (1) the per capita rate of increase of all plant population must exceed the sum of the negative per capita effects of predation, interspecific competition, and costs of mycorrhizal association, and (2) the per capita numerical response of enemies to mycorrhizal plants must exceed the magnitude of the per capita enemy rate of mortality. These conditions reflect the balance between regulation and facilitation in the system. Interactions between plant natural enemies and mycorrhizal fungi lead to shifts in the strength and direction of net mycorrhizal effects on plants over time, with common plant species deriving greater benefits from mycorrhizal associations than rare plant species.  相似文献

A perennial challenge in ecology is to develop dynamical systems models that appropriately abstract and characterize the dynamics of natural systems. Deriving an appropriate model of system dynamics can be a long and iterative process whose outcome depends critically on the quality of empirical data describing the long‐term behavior of a natural system. Most ecological time series are insufficient to offer insight into the way organizational hierarchies and spatial scales are causally linked to natural system dynamics. Moreover, the classic tradition of hypothesis testing in ecology is not likely to lead to those key insights. This because empirical research is geared almost exclusively toward testing model predictions based on underlying causal relationships assumed by theorists. So, empirical research relies heavily on theory for guidance on what is or is not dynamically relevant. I argue here that it is entirely possible to reduce much of this guesswork involved with deciding on causal structure by giving empirical research a new role in theory development. In this role, natural history and field observations are used to develop stochastic, individual‐based and spatially explicit computational models or IBMs that can explore the range of contingency and complexity inherent in real‐world systems.
IBMs can be used to run simulations allowing deductions to be made about the causal linkages between organizational hierarchies, spatial scales, and dynamics. These deductions can be tested under field conditions using experiments that manipulate the putative causal structure and evaluate the dynamical consequences. The emerging insights from this stage can then be used to inspire an analytical construct that embodies the dynamically relevant scales and mechanisms. In essence, computational modeling serves as an intermediate step in theory development in that a wide range of possibly important biological details are considered and then reduced to a subset that is dynamically relevant.  相似文献

It is widely recognized that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) influence plant community structure. Several studies in the past few years have focused on the effect of AMF on plant diversity, showing contradictory results. On the basis of studies carried out in grasslands, it has been proposed that these results may not be in conflict but rather depend on mycorrhizal dependence of dominant and subordinate species in the plant community. Here, we propose a simple conceptual model to explain the effect of AMF on plant diversity and dominance hierarchy. Our model suggests that the effect of AMF on plant diversity can be explained mainly by mycorrhizal dependence of subordinates. It also gives predictions for a wider range of community types, and helps in identifying the systems in which empirical data are most critically needed.  相似文献

Ecosystem carbon (C) balance is hypothesised to be sensitive to the mycorrhizal strategies that plants use to acquire nutrients. To test this idea, we coupled an optimality‐based plant nitrogen (N) acquisition model with a microbe‐focused soil organic matter (SOM) model. The model accurately predicted rhizosphere processes and C–N dynamics across a gradient of stands varying in their relative abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) trees. When mycorrhizal dominance was switched – ECM trees dominating plots previously occupied by AM trees, and vice versa – legacy effects were apparent, with consequences for both C and N stocks in soil. Under elevated productivity, ECM trees enhanced decomposition more than AM trees via microbial priming of unprotected SOM. Collectively, our results show that ecosystem responses to global change may hinge on the balance between rhizosphere priming and SOM protection, and highlight the importance of dynamically linking plants and microbes in terrestrial biosphere models.  相似文献

Unlike photosynthetic plants, several distantly related nonphotosynthetic plants are highly specialized toward their mycorrhizal fungi. It is unknown whether this specialization varies geographically or is influenced by the environment. We have investigated these questions in the nonphotosynthetic orchids Corallorhiza maculata and C. mertensiana by amplifying fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) fragments from widespread mycorrhiza samples and then discriminating putative fungal species using ITS restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs). Three fungal species were found across 27 plants representing seven populations of C. mertensiana; 20 species were found across 104 plants and 21 populations of C. maculata. All fungi belonged to the Russulaceae, an ectomycorrhizal family. Partitioning of Simpson's diversity showed that 48% of the variance in occurrences of fungal species coincided with population boundaries in C. mertensiana, vs. 68% in C. maculata. This differentiation coincided with geography but not habitat in C. mertensiana. In contrast, likelihood ratio tests showed strong associations between fungal occurrence and both habitat and phenotype in C. maculata. For example, C. maculata populations growing under oaks had no fungi in common with nearby populations growing under conifers, and those above 2000 m had no fungi in common with those below 2000 m. However, plant genetic differentiation may underlie some of these patterns. C. mertensiana and C. maculata never shared fungal species, even when growing intermixed at the same site, demonstrating genetic control that was independent of habitat. Similarly, intermixed normal and pale-coloured variants of C. maculata had no fungal species in common. These results demonstrate fine-scale genetic influences and geographical mosaicism in a mycorrhizal interaction.  相似文献

Aim

The fine roots of trees may show plastic responses to their resource environment. Several, contrasting hypotheses exist on this plasticity, but empirical evidence for these hypotheses is scattered. This study aims to enhance our understanding of tree root plasticity by examining intra-specific variation in fine-root mass and morphology, fine-root growth and decomposition, and associated mycorrhizal interactions in beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) forests on soils that differ in resource availability.

Methods

We measured the mass and morphological traits of fine roots (i.e. ≤ 2 mm diameter) sampled to 50 cm depth. Fine-root growth was measured with ingrowth cores, and fine-root decomposition with litter bags. Mycorrhizal fungal biomass was determined using ingrowth mesh bags.

Results

Both tree species showed more than three times higher fine-root mass, and a ten-fold higher fine-root growth rate on sand than on clay, but no or marginal differences in overall fine-root morphology. Within the fine-root category however, beech stands had relatively more root length of their finest roots on clay than on sand. In the spruce stands, ectomycorrhizal mycelium biomass was larger on sand than on clay.

Conclusions

In temperate beech and spruce forests, fine-root mass and mycorrhizal fungal biomass, rather than fine-root morphology, are changed to ensure uptake under different soil resource conditions. Yet enhancing our mechanistic understanding of fine-root trait plasticity and how it affects tree growth requires more attention to fine-root dynamics, the functional diversity within the fine-roots, and mycorrhizal symbiosis as an important belowground uptake strategy.

Associations between mycorrhizal fungi and plants can influence intraspecific competition and shape plant population structure. While variation in plant genotypes is known to affect mycorrhizal colonization in crop systems, little is known about how genotypes affect colonization in natural plant populations or how plant sex might influence colonization with mycorrhizal fungi in plant species with dimorphic sexual systems. In this study, we analyzed mycorrhizal colonization in males and females of the wetland dioecious grass Distichlis spicata, which has spatially segregated sexes. Our results suggest that D. spicata males and females interact with mycorrhizal fungi differently. We discuss the implications for the role of this sex-specific symbiotic interaction in the maintenance of the within-population sex ratio bias of D. spicata.  相似文献

Plant roots in natural ecosystems are typically colonized by a wide range of fungi. Some of these are pathogenic, others appear to be opportunistic and have no apparent impact, while mycorrhizal fungi are generally regarded as mutualistic. Of the various types of mycorrhizal fungi, the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) association is by far the most abundant and widespread. While the most widely accepted model of AM function depends upon plants benefiting from the facilitation of phosphorus uptake, recent data from field-based studies in temperate ecosystems indicate that only plant species with poorly branched root systems benefit from AM fungi in this way: species with highly branched root systems may benefit in other ways, such as by being protected against root pathogenic fungi. These two responses apparently represent extremes along a continuum of AM benefit determined by root system architecture.  相似文献

The effects of elevated CO2 concentration upon the mycorrhizal relationships of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) seedlings were investigated. Plants were grown for 4 months with their shoots exposed to ambient (CAMB=360 μl l−1) or elevated (CELEV=700 μl l−1) CO2 environments while their root systems, either colonised by the mycorrhizal fungi Paxillus involutus or Suillus bovinus, or left in the non-mycorrhizal condition, were maintained in sealed dishes. In one series of these plants the effects of CELEV upon the extent of mycorrhizal development and upon their growth and nutrition were determined, while another series were transferred from the dishes after 1 month, to transparent observation chambers before being returned to the two CO2 environments. In these chambers, the effects of CELEV upon development of the external mycelial systems of the two mycorrhizal fungi was determined by measuring the advance of the hyphal fronts of the mycorrhizal fungi across non-sterile peat from the colonised plants. The dry mass and number of mycorrhizal tips were significantly higher in CELEV than in the CAMB condition in plants colonised by both fungi in the dishes. Yields of whole plants and of shoots were higher in the CELEV treatment whether or not they were grown in the mycorrhizal condition, but the greater yields were not associated in these sealed systems with enhanced nutrient gain. The dry mass of non-mycorrhizal plants was greater than that of those colonised by mycorrhizal fungi under elevated CO2. This is thought to be attributable to the energetic cost of production of the larger mycorrhizal systems in this treatment. The extent of development of the mycorrhizal mycelial systems of both fungi was greatly increased in CELEV relative to that in CAMB environments. It is hypothesised that increased allocation of carbon to mycorrhizal root systems and their associated mycelia would provide the potential for enhancement of nutrient acquisition in open systems of greater fertility.  相似文献

A central challenge in global ecology is the identification of key functional processes in ecosystems that scale, but do not require, data for individual species across landscapes. Given that nearly all tree species form symbiotic relationships with one of two types of mycorrhizal fungi – arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi – and that AM‐ and ECM‐dominated forests often have distinct nutrient economies, the detection and mapping of mycorrhizae over large areas could provide valuable insights about fundamental ecosystem processes such as nutrient cycling, species interactions, and overall forest productivity. We explored remotely sensed tree canopy spectral properties to detect underlying mycorrhizal association across a gradient of AM‐ and ECM‐dominated forest plots. Statistical mining of reflectance and reflectance derivatives across moderate/high‐resolution Landsat data revealed distinctly unique phenological signals that differentiated AM and ECM associations. This approach was trained and validated against measurements of tree species and mycorrhizal association across ~130 000 trees throughout the temperate United States. We were able to predict 77% of the variation in mycorrhizal association distribution within the forest plots (P < 0.001). The implications for this work move us toward mapping mycorrhizal association globally and advancing our understanding of biogeochemical cycling and other ecosystem processes.  相似文献

Few studies have examined how below-ground interactions among plants affect the abundance and community composition of symbiotic mycorrhizal fungi. Here, we combined observations during drought with a removal experiment to examine the effects of below-ground interactions with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) shrubs on the growth of pinyon pines (Pinus edulis), and the abundance and community composition of their ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi. Shrub density was negatively correlated with pinyon above- and below-ground growth and explained 75% of the variation in EM colonization. Consistent with competitive release, pinyon fine-root biomass, shoot length and needle length increased with shrub removal. EM colonization also doubled following shrub removal. EM communities did not respond to shrub removal, perhaps because of their strikingly low diversity. These results suggest that below-ground competition with AM shrubs negatively impacted both pinyons and EM fungi. Similar competitive effects may be observed in other ecosystems given that drought frequency and severity are predicted to increase for many land interiors.  相似文献

In this article we discuss the possible significance of biological processes, and of fungi in particular, in weathering of minerals. We consider biological activity to be a significant driver of mineral weathering in forest ecosystems. In these environments fungi play key roles in organic matter decomposition, uptake, transfer and cycling of organic and inorganic nutrients, biogenic mineral formation, as well as transformation and accumulation of metals. The ability of lichens, mutualistic symbioses between fungi and photobionts such as algae or cyanobacteria, to weather minerals is well documented. The role of mycorrhizal fungi forming symbioses with forest trees is less well understood, but the mineral horizons of boreal forests are intensively colonised by mycorrhizal mycelia which transfer protons and organic metabolites derived from plant photosynthates to mineral surfaces, resulting in mineral dissolution and mobilisation and redistribution of anionic nutrients and metal cations. The mycorrhizal mycelia, in turn provide efficient systems for the uptake and direct transport of mobilised essential nutrients to their host plants which are large sinks. Since almost all (99.99 %) non-suberised lateral plant roots involved in nutrient uptake are covered by ectomycorrhizal fungi, most of this exchange of metabolites must take place through the plant–fungus interface. This idea is still consistent with a linear relationship between soil mineral surface area and weathering rate since the mycelia that emanate from the tree roots will have a larger area of contact with minerals if the mineral surface area is higher. Although empirical models based on bulk soil solution chemistry may fit field data, we argue that biological processes make an important contribution to mineral weathering and that a more detailed mechanistic understanding of these must be developed in order to predict responses to environmental changes and anthropogenic impact.  相似文献

The Orchidaceae are globally distributed and represent a diverse lineage of obligate mycotrophic plants. Given their dependence on symbiotic fungi for germination and/or plant development, fungal community structure in substrates is expected to influence the distribution and persistence of orchid species. Yet, simultaneous characterization of orchid mycorrhizal fungal (OMF) communities in roots and in soil is rarely reported. To explain the co-distributions of OMF in roots, orchid-occupied, and bulk soil, we characterized mycorrhizal fungi associated with Platanthera praeclara over multiple years across its entire natural distribution within the North American tallgrass prairie. Root derived OMF communities included 24 Ceratobasidiaceae and 7 Tulasnellaceae operational taxonomic units (OTUs) though the orchid exhibited high spatio-temporal specificity toward a single Ceratobasidiaceae OTU, which was strongly stable across population sizes and phenological stages of the sampled individuals. The preferred OMF OTUs were primarily restricted to orchid-occupied locations while infrequent or absent in bulk soil. Variation in soil OMF assemblies was explained most by soil moisture, magnesium, manganese, and clay. In this first study of coupled root and soil OMF communities across a threatened grassland ecosystem, we report a strong relationship, further nuanced by soil chemistry, between a rare fungus and a rare orchid.  相似文献

Mycorrhizas: Gene to Function   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Substantial progress has been made toward development of molecular tools for identification and quantification of mycorrhizal fungi in roots and evaluation of the diversity of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi and the phylogeny and genetic structure of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. rDNA analysis confirms high diversity of ECM fungi on their hosts, and for AM fungi has revealed considerable genetic variation within and among morphologically similar AM fungal species. The fungal and plant genes, regulation of their expression, and biochemical pathways for nutrient exchange between symbiotic partners are now coming under intense study and will eventually be used to define the ecological nutritional role of the fungi. While molecular biological approaches have increased understanding of the mycorrhizal symbiosis, such knowledge about these lower-scale processes has yet to influence our understanding of larger-scale responses to any great extent.  相似文献

In an era of rapid global change, our ability to understand and predict Earth's natural systems is lagging behind our ability to monitor and measure changes in the biosphere. Bottlenecks to informing models with observations have reduced our capacity to fully exploit the growing volume and variety of available data. Here, we take a critical look at the information infrastructure that connects ecosystem modeling and measurement efforts, and propose a roadmap to community cyberinfrastructure development that can reduce the divisions between empirical research and modeling and accelerate the pace of discovery. A new era of data‐model integration requires investment in accessible, scalable, and transparent tools that integrate the expertise of the whole community, including both modelers and empiricists. This roadmap focuses on five key opportunities for community tools: the underlying foundations of community cyberinfrastructure; data ingest; calibration of models to data; model‐data benchmarking; and data assimilation and ecological forecasting. This community‐driven approach is a key to meeting the pressing needs of science and society in the 21st century.  相似文献
