Lathyrus sect. Lathyrostylis includes 20 Eurasian species that are more or less xerophytic. They are mainly distributed in South Europe and Southwest Asia, especially in Turkey. The majority of the species inhabits dry meadows, scrubs, Pinus forests, macchies, rocky slopes and screes. The following diagnostic characters are valuable: All species are perennial. The pinnate leaves consist of (1–)2–3(–8) pairs of parallelveined, amphistomatic leaflets and the rachis ending in a simple tip. The style is linear to broadly spathulate but not twisted. Within the section neither subsections nor series can be distinguished. The study is mainly based on herbarium specimens. Only few species had been cultivated. A key to species and subspecies and new maps, mainly based on revised herbarium specimens, are given. Species and infraspecific taxa are described, and their variability, relationships, phytogeography and ecology are discussed. At last some supplements and corrections to the revision of Lathyrus sect. Orobus (Bässler 1973) are added.  相似文献

Fifty rhizobial isolates of Lathyrus and Oxytropis collected from northern regions of China were studied in their genotypic characterization based upon analyses of ARDRA, 16S-23S IGS PCR-RFLP, TP-RAPD, MLEE, sequences of 16S rDNA gene and housekeeping genes of atpD, recA and glnII. The results demonstrated that most of the Lathyrus rhizobia belonged to Rhizobium and most of the Oxytropis rhizobia belonged to Sinorhizobium. A novel group of Rhizobium sp. I and S. meliloti were identified as the main microsymbionts respectively associated with Lathyrus and Oxytropis species in the collection area, which were new associations between rhizobia and the mentioned hosts. This study also provides new evidence for biogeography of rhizobia. The structure-function relationship of eight structurally very similarLathyrus lectins, which are two-chain lectins from theVicieae tribe, has been studied. Hemagglutination activity, inhibition of hemagglutination, glycoprotein reactivity and mitogenic activity were determined for each of the lectins. Despite the close structural resemblance, marked differences in the carbohydrate binding activity of theLathyrus lectins were recorded. These functional differences were related to small conformational changes due to minor differences in amino acid sequence of eachLathyrus lectin.  相似文献

Summary The taxonomic relationships between 52 accessions of 12 Vicia species and three accessions of Lathyrus were examined using nuclear RFLP- and PCR-generated data. Two hundred and sixty informative restriction fragments or amplification products were analysed by single linkage analysis, average cluster analysis, and the Wagner parsimony method. Dendrograms constructed from each type of analysis showed similar overall topologies and could be divided into three parts corresponding respectively to the Lathyrus outgroup, the species grouped in the section Faba/narbonemis complex, and the species belonging to the sections Hypechusa and Peregrinae. With few exceptions, the majority of accessions belonging to one species grouped together before branching to other species. An analysis of mitochondrial DNA phenotypes was both consistent with and complemented the results from the nuclear data. Overall, the species relationships show a good correlation with the classification of Maxted et al. but suggest that V. faba is more closely aligned to species from the sections Hypechusa and Peregrinae than to those in the narbonensis complex. In addition, the position of two new species, V. kalakhensis and V. eristaloides, as members of the narbonensis complex was supported by the molecular data, which also allowed a preliminary classification for recently collected Vicia accessions.  相似文献

Using either leaf or cotyledon tissues, the phytoalexin response of over 60 representative members of the genera Lathyrus, Lens, Pisum and Vicia was determined. Twenty-nine Vicia species produced furanoacetylenes, as did the two Lens species examined. By contrast, Pisum and Lathyrus failed to produce any of these phytoalexins, but formed pisatin instead. Thus, pisatin was formed as the major phytoalexin in 29 of 31 Lathyrus species tested, representing 10 sections within the genus. This dichotomy in phytoalexin response is discussed in relation to the taxonomy of the tribe Vicieae.  相似文献

Summary Evolution and divergence among, species within the genusLathyrus have involved an approximately fivefold increase in the amounts of nuclear DNA. Most species inLathyrus are diploids with the same chromosome number, 2n=14. Significant changes in the amounts of repetitive sequences have accounted for much of the evolutionary DNA variation between species. Seven diploidLathyrus species with a twofold variation in nuclear DNA amounts between them were investigated. Using higher derivative analysis of the thermal denaturation profiles of the reassociated repetitive DNA, the reiteration frequency and divergence of repetitive families were compared. Much variation in the reiteration frequency was observed within and between species. In species with larger 2C DNA amounts repetitive families had on average greater amounts of DNA. Despite the massive differences in DNA amounts, six species were consistently similar in the number of repetitive families in their genomes, and they showed a similar pattern in base sequence divergence. In terms of base sequence relationships the repetitive families appeared to be heterogeneous. The evolutionary significance is discussed.  相似文献

A pea rust fungus, Uromyces viciae-fabae, has been classified into two varieties, var. viciae-fabae and var. orobi, based on differences in urediniospore wall thickness and putative host specificity in Japan. In principal component analyses, morphological features of urediniospores and teliospores of 94 rust specimens from Vicia, Lathyrus, and Pisum did not show definite host-specific morphological groups. In molecular analyses, 23 Uromyces specimens from Vicia, Lathyrus, and Pisum formed a single genetic clade based on D1/D2 and ITS regions. Four isolates of U. viciae-fabae from V. cracca and V. unijuga could infect and sporulate on P. sativum. Among diploid Lathyrus species a threefold variation in nuclear DNA amount is attributable to differences in the amount of repetitive DNA. Cross reassociation among repetitive and among non-repetitive DNA fractions from different species shows substantial divergence in DNA composition. The divergence in base composition is correlated with nuclear DNA amount. The degree of divergence is of the same order of magnitude in both the repetitive and nonrepetitive fractions.  相似文献

Lathyrus cicera L. (chickling pea) and L. sativus L. (grass pea) have great potential among grain legumes due to their adaptability to inauspicious environments, high protein content and resistance to serious diseases. Nevertheless, due to its past underused, further activities are required to exploit this potential and to capitalise on the advances in molecular biology that enable improved Lathyrus spp. breeding programmes. In this study we evaluated the transferability of molecular markers developed for closely related legume species to Lathyrus spp. (Medicago truncatula, pea, lentil, faba bean and lupin) and tested the application of those new molecular tools on Lathyrus mapping and diversity studies. Genomic and expressed sequence tag microsatellite, intron-targeted amplified polymorphic, resistance gene analogue and defence-related gene markers were tested. In total 128 (27.7 %) and 132 (28.6 %) molecular markers were successfully cross-amplified, respectively in L. cicera and L. sativus. In total, the efficiency of transferability from genomic microsatellites was 5 %, and from gene-based markers, 55 %. For L. cicera, three cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence markers and one derived cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence marker based on the cross-amplified markers were also developed. Nine of those molecular markers were suitable for mapping in a L. cicera recombinant inbred line population. From the 17 molecular markers tested for diversity analysis, six (35 %) in L. cicera and seven (41 %) in L. sativus were polymorphic and discriminate well all the L. sativus accessions. Additionally, L. cicera accessions were clearly distinguished from L. sativus accessions. This work revealed a high number of transferable molecular markers to be used in current genomic studies in Lathyrus spp. Although their usefulness was higher on diversity studies, they represent the first steps for future comparative mapping involving these species.  相似文献

Pinus ponderosa forests occupy numerous topographic and soil complexes across vast areas of the southwestern United States, yet few data exist on species distributions and vegetation–environment relationships for these environmentally diverse landscapes. We measured topography, soils, and vegetation on 66, 0.05-ha plots within a 110,000-ha P. ponderosa landscape in northern Arizona, USA, to discern vegetation–environment relationships on this landscape. We analyzed associations of environmental variables with plant communities and with single-species distributions, and we classified ecological species groups (co-occurring plant species exhibiting similar environmental affinities). Gradients in community composition paralleled gradients in soil texture, available water, organic C, total N, and geographic precipitation patterns. Soil parent material, affected by the presence or absence of volcanic activity, is a primary factor constraining vegetation patterns on this landscape. Using discriminant analysis, we built a model that correctly classified the most important of four grasses (Bouteloua gracilis, Muhlenbergia montana, Sporobolus interruptus, or Festuca arizonica) on 70–80% of plots based on five environmental variables related to soil moisture and resource levels. We also classified 52 of the 271 detected plant species into 18 ecological species groups. Species groups ranged from Phacelia and Bahia groups occupying xeric, volcanic cinder soils low in organic C and total N, to Festuca and Lathyrus groups characterizing moist, loam and silt loam soils. We applied the species groups by estimating P. ponderosa diameter increment in a regression tree using abundances of species groups. The most rapid P. ponderosa diameter growth of 5 mm/year occurred on plots with high importance of the Festuca and Lathyrus groups. Our results on this semi-arid landscape support several general ecological species group principles chiefly developed in temperate regions, and suggest that vegetation–environment research has great potential for enhancing our understanding of P. ponderosa forests occupying vast areas of the southwestern United States.  相似文献

Oviposition behavior and larval mortality of the pea weevil, Bruchus pisorum L. on Lathyrus tingitanus L. and Lathyrus sativus L. were studied to determine the mechanisms by which these plant species resist pea weevil attack. Female weevils caged on pods of these species oviposited at a reduced rate compared to those caged on pods of pea, Pisum sativum L. Females kept in vials in the laboratory and given a choice between L. sativus pods and pea pods oviposited at a higher rate on pea and the glass vial than on L. sativus. Two to three days following oviposition, L. tingitanus pods developed callus tissue growth beneath the eggs. These growths later covered much of the pod. L. sativus pods exhibited a similar response to hatching larvae. Pea weevil larvae attempting to penetrate pods of both species died. Larvae placed inside L. sativus pods established in seeds and had no greater mortality after 72 h than those placed inside pea pods. Identified defenses in lathyrus against pea weevil attack consist of antibiosis as well as antixenosis. These resistance mechanisms are located in the pod.
Résumé Les espèces de Lathyrus sont indemnés d'attaques de la bruche du pois, Bruchus pisorum, bien que le pollen de deux membres de ce genre ait induit, après ingestion, l'ovogenèse des femelles. La ponte et la mortalité larvaire de B. pisorum sur L. tingitanus et L. sativus (Leguminosae) ont été examinées pour déterminer les mécanismes permetant à ces espèces de résister à l'attaque de cette bruche. Des femelles aux ovaires développés ont été mises en cage en serre, avec des gousses de chacune des deux espèces de Lathyrus et de Pisum sativum; les femelles ont pondu beaucoup moins sur Lathyrus que sur Pisum. Au laboratoire, des femelles aptes à pondre, placées dans des bocaux avec des gousses de même taille de L. sativus et P. sativus, ont pondu sur le pois et le bocal que sur L. sativus.Deux à 3 jours après contamination par les oeufs de bruche, les gousses de L. tingitanus forment des cals sous les oeufs. Ces excroissances s'étendent de telle sorte que la majorité de la gousse en est recouverte quelques jours plus tard; les gousses de L. sativus présentent une réponse semblable mais plus localisée. La croissance du cal se produit en réponse à l'éclosion plutôt qu'à la ponte, car aucune n'a été observée sous les oeufs qui n'ont pas éclos, et aucune s'étend au-delà des zones immédiatement sous les oeufs éclos. Les larves de B. pisorum tentant de pénétrer dans les gousses des 2 espèces meurent, tandis que des larves placées à l'intérieur des gouses de L. sativus n'ont pas présenté une mortalité supérieure dans les graines au bout de 72 h à celle des larves placées à l'intérieur des gousses de pois. On peut envisager que la reconnaissance de stimuli dissuasifs par les femelles de bruches ait pu évoluer en réponse à la présence de mécanismes de défense de la gousse.

Background

The Lathyrus genus includes 160 species, some of which have economic importance as food, fodder and ornamental crops (mainly L. sativus, L. cicera and L. odoratus, respectively) and are cultivated in >1·5 Mha worldwide. However, in spite of their well-recognized robustness and potential as a source of calories and protein for populations in drought-prone and marginal areas, cultivation is in decline and there is a high risk of genetic erosion.

Scope

In this review, current and past taxonomic treatments of the Lathyrus genus are assessed and its current status is examined together with future prospects for germplasm conservation, characterization and utilization. A particular emphasis is placed on the importance of diversity analysis for breeding of L. sativus and L. cicera.

Conclusions

Efforts for improvement of L. sativus and L. cicera should concentrate on the development of publicly available joint core collections, and on high-resolution genotyping. This will be critical for permitting decentralized phenotyping. Such a co-ordinated international effort should result in more efficient and faster breeding approaches, which are particularly needed for these neglected, underutilized Lathyrus species.  相似文献

The sphingoid long-chain base (LCB) composition of glucosylceramides was characterized in 31 species of Fabaceae including the model legumes Lotus japonicus and Medicago truncatula. With the exception of Lupinus texensis L, the 8-trans/cis-unsaturated isomers of 4-hydroxy-8-sphingenines [i.e., t18:1 (8t) plus t18:1 (8c)] were the major components in each species. In tribe Fabeae, each species from four genera—Pisum, Lathyrus, Lens, and Vicia—showed that more than 50% of dihydroxy sphingoid LCBs are 8-sphingenines [i.e., d18:1 (8t) plus d18:1 (8c)]. These results suggest that the sphingoid LCB composition of glucosylceramides reflects the phylogenetic relationships within the Fabeae.  相似文献

The genus Lathyrus includes a number of neglected wild relatives of pea with potential as genetic resources for acquisition of stress resistance traits, but, due to little breeding, genotypes under culture are mainly landraces and seldom true varieties. Development of in vitro approaches for Lathyrus is also limited, and assessments of nuclear DNA content, for taxonomical or breeding purposes, are sparse. Genome size and AT/GC ratio were determined by flow cytometry, allowing for distinction between protein and forage L. sativus, L. cicera, L. ochrus and L. clymenum and the ornamental sweet pea (L. odoratus), and also between landraces within L. sativus L. and L. cicera L. In addition, explants from in vitro seedlings of eight genotypes from the five Lathyrus species above were cultivated in vitro, plant regeneration was achieved for all landraces and species, and the nuclear DNA content of the regenerants was compared with that of their mother plants, whereby the true-to-typeness of such regenerants was confirmed.  相似文献

Abstract 1. The taxon known as the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, is composed of a series of host plant associated populations and is widely used as a model system to explore ecological speciation and the evolution of specialisation. It is thus important to know how maternal and pre‐adult experience influences host plant utilisation in this species. 2. The relative importance of the maternal and pre‐adult host plant for adult fecundity and host preference was investigated using three aphid clones collected from Lathyrus pratensis and maintained on Lathyrus or Vicia faba. 3. No significant effects of the maternal host plant on offspring fecundity were detected. 4. The host plant on which the aphid grew up influenced adult fecundity, although in a complex way that depended on both the adult host plant species and when after transfer to the test plant fecundity was assessed. 5. All three clones preferred to colonise Lathyrus over Vicia, and this preference was stronger for aphids raised on Lathyrus. 6. The significance of the results for studies of the evolution of specialisation and speciation that employ A. pisum is discussed.  相似文献

There is approximately a doubling of the total nuclear DNA between the 8 Lathyrus species and there are significant differences in the amounts of DNA in euchromatin and heterochromatin. Between the 8 species chiasma frequency and total nuclear DNA are not correlated but within complements it is positively correlated with the amount of DNA in the chromosomes. There is no significant correlation between chiasma frequency and euchromatin DNA nor between chiasma frequency and heterochromatin DNA among species, but among chromosomes, as with total DNA, it is positively correlated with euchromatin DNA and heterochromatin DNA. Results show that despite the large differences in DNA amounts between species there are genomic constraints underlying the frequency and distribution of chiasmata in the chromosome complements.  相似文献
