Summary Leeches were placed in a 0.8 m linear temperature gradient from 0°C to 40°C. The temperature selected by the leeches was recorded over 30 min intervals; series of animals then received an injection of either pure sterile water,Escherichia coli endotoxin (LPS) at doses of 0.05, 0.25 and 10 g·g–1, alcohol, or prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) at doses of 2 and 4 g·g–1. After a latency of about 90 min, the leeches developed a dose-dependent fever in response to LPS. Maximal preferred temperature was near 29.6±1.4 whereas the control was 20.5±0.6°C. PGE1 also evoked dose-dependent fevers of the same magnitude as LPS (30.0±1.0°C), but without latency. Another series of leeches received an injection of LPS of 10 g·g–1 while in water containing 1.6 mg acetaminophen per 20 l water. Acetaminophen prevented the development of LPS fever. It is concluded that annelids respond to infection with a behavioral fever analogous to that of vertebrates. 相似文献

Summary The effect of a predatory leech, Nephelopsis obscura, on survivorship, growth, and production of chronomid larvae was studied by enclosure experiments carried out in a small pond. The prey population was composed almost entirely of the tubiculous, microphagous chironomid larvae, Chironomus riparius and Glyptotendipes paripes. Nephelopsis significantly reduced chironomid survivorship within the enclosures, and accounted for most of the measured mortality of fourth instar larvae. The cropping by Nephelopsis was not significantly biased toward either prey species. In long-term experiments (66 d) chironomid biomass in enclosures without leeches reached much higher levels than in enclosures containing Nephelopsis. This increase in biomass was due to growth of surviving larvae, rather than recruitment, since emergence and oviposition were not going on during the course of the experiments. The enhanced survivorship of larvae within leech-free enclosures was eventually accompanied by reduced growth and specific production (daily production/biomass) for C. riparius, which made up about 90% of the larval population. Growth and specific production of G. paripes (10% of larval population) was not affected. Short-term experiments (25 d) involving manipulation of densities and species ratio (9:1 CR:GP and 1:9 CR:GP) of larvae revealed that growth of the majority species was strongly influenced by larval density, whereas growth of the minority species was not. The same pattern was observed both in the presence and in the absence of Nephelopsis and was a result of differences in resource utilization between the two species. In the shortterm experiments, growth rates estimated for larvae exposed to leeches were significantly less than those for larvae in leech-free enclosures. This could be due either to size-biased consumption of larvae by Nephelopsis, or possibly a disturbance factor leading to reduced larval food intake and/or increased metabolic costs. 相似文献

The feeding rates and vertical distribution of the freshwater leech Nephelopsis obscura, fed on different densities of third instar Chironomus riparius, were determined in the laboratory at three different constant dissolved oxygen regimes (10%, 100%, 300% saturation) at 15 °C. The rate of feeding increased linearly with prey density up to maximal field prey densities, with no satiation response. Analysis of covariance showed that the rate (slope) at which prey were consumed was not significantly different among oxygen regimes but the amount eaten at any given prey density was higher in higher dissolved oxygen saturations. Analysis of the vertical distribution of N. obscura at different oxygen saturations and prey densities showed a higher proportion of N. obscura on or in the mud substrate compared to the water column at 100% and 300%. No correlation was found between prey density and the vertical distribution of N. obscura, but the numbers of prey eaten were correlated with the proportion of N. obscura on the mud substrate. These results indicate that higher percentage dissolved oxygen regimes increase the feeding of N. obscura and are of potential importance in explaining the seasonal depth distribution and microdistribution patterns recorded for N. obscura. 相似文献

Significant inter-populational differences in propensity to attempt boring into (accept) various types of fruit for oviposition were found among Ceratitis capitata females from two wild sources and one laboratory source. Evidence suggests that (a) fruit size had a strong influence whereas fruit taxonomic status had little influence on the acceptance pattern of each population, and (b) at least a portion of the inter-populational variation had a genetic basis.
Zusammenfassung Bei zwei Wildherkünften und einem Laboratoriumsstamm von Ceratitis capitata wurden Weibchen auf ihre Neigung zur Probebohrung in Früchte vor der Eiablage untersucht; dabei ergaben sich gesicherte Unterschiede zwischen den Populationen. 1. Benthic macroinvertebrate distribution was examined in relation to channel characteristics (including stability), substratum, hydraulic variables, primary production (chlorophyll a ) and coarse particular organic matter (CPOM) in an alpine glacial stream, the Mutt (Upper Rhône valley, Switzerland). Co-inertia analysis and canonical correspondence analysis were used to identify the major environmental gradients influencing community variations.
2. The Mutt (length: 3.6 km, altitudinal range: 1800–3099 m a.s.l.) exhibited typical characteristics of a kryal stream. Average summer temperature remained below 2 °C immediately downstream from the snout but was on average 5 °C higher 1700 m downstream. Seasonal variations in water sources were evidenced by the high late-summer (September) contribution of groundwater with increased conductivity.
3. Sixty-six taxa were recorded from the five reaches sampled at three periods (snowmelt, ice melt and low water in late summer) in 1996 and 1997, of which 29 were Chironomidae. Three taxa of Diamesinae were the first colonizers of the stream below the glacier, but 16 taxa, including Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera, were already recorded 200 m downstream. Water depth, channel slope and Pfankuch's Index of channel stability were strongly correlated with the longitudinal faunal gradient. Mercury-resistance genes were detected byin situ hybridization using new synthetic oligonucleotide probes specific formerA andmerB genes according to the published sequences of the corresponding enzymes. These DNA probes were used for the detection of specific mercury-resistant microorganisms isolated from the Rhine River which had been polluted 3 years previously in 1986. Mercuric reductase and organomercurial lyase genes persist in the bacterial genome even after the disappearance of the pollutant but are absent in axenic amoebae. Remote high elevation sites are thought to be good sites to monitor global change and anthropogenic effects on ecosystems. This study was conducted during 1987–1990 in a high elevation wetland (3593 m) located in the Green Lakes Valley, Front Range, Colorado (USA). Salix spp. was the dominant riparian species in this 2 ha. wetland. Small shallow pools (<0.5 m depth) constituted a water area of 236 m3. The major source of water during the study period was snowmelt. The wetland had a well defined outlet and inlet, although an undetermined amount of water entered as groundwater from the snow patch above. Outlet discharge was 424–460 m3 during the month of July and declined thereafter as water input from the snowpatch declined. Inlet discharge was 67% of outlet discharge. Water temperatures in the outlet were always less than 6.8°C, pH 6.0–6.3, and mean conductivity 30.8 µS cm–1. Both NO

A minimum of 16–54 samples would be needed to detect a significant interannual change in biomass on tiles after 35 days assuming that the extreme case for periphyton patchiness. Silver fir presently occurs in many mountainous regions of eastern, western, southern and Central Europe. In order to elucidate the biogeographic history of fir populations in different European areas, the distribution of area-specific alleles at eight enzyme loci and the allele frequency distributions at seven polymorphic enzyme loci were investigated in seed or bud samples from 48 provenances comprising 98 single stands. Due to great genetic divergence among different populations located near the ancient glacial retreats, it was concluded that silver fir survived in five refugia during the last glaciation but migrated from only three refugia to its present natural range. The occurrence of unique alleles in particular fir areas indicated its migratory routes to the north and the existence of a few introgression zones where silver fir from different refugia has met during its expansion. 相似文献

The talitrid amphipods were found for the first time in the Northeastern Baltic Sea in 1999. Orchestia cavimana inhabited damp wracks cast up on shore within a 200 m area of Saaremaa Island. In the following year, the species expanded its range to a few kilometres. In 2002, six additional locations of O. cavimana were found in Saaremaa Island and two locations in the Northwestern part of Estonia. Abundances and biomasses were highest in the first year of the invasion. In the following years, the values stabilized on remarkably lower levels. Population characteristics of the species varied significantly between locations. The average biomass and abundance were 9 g dw m−2 and 1975 ind m−2, respectively. Wrack biomass and interaction between wrack biomass and exposure were the best predictors of the abundances and biomasses of O. cavimana. Humidity explained additional variability in biomasses. The size structure of the population of O. cavimana was mostly related to humidity and wrack biomass. The Southern coast of the Baltic Sea may be regarded as the initial donor region for the Estonian populations of O. cavimana. The vector of this invasion is most likely related to the natural dispersal of the drifting algae but human activities as a transport vector can not be excluded. The incredible speed of the invasion of O. cavimana and its high biomasses indicate that the species will very likely extend its distribution along the coast of the Northeastern Baltic Sea in the following years. 相似文献

Evolutionary variation of aspartate aminotransferase and superoxide dismutase isoenzymes in 14 wild and cultivated species ofPhaseolus andVigna has been studied by electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gel. The American cultivated beans of the genusPhaseolus s. str.,P. vulgaris, P. coccineus, P. lunatus andP. acutifolius, form a homogeneous group with only minor isoenzyme variation. The genusVigna, on the contrary, proves to be heterogeneous in isozyme characters. Several clusters of taxa can be distinguished in close correspondence with modern treatments of the genus. The isoenzyme data support the inclusion of the Asian Azuki beans of subg.Ceratotropis inVigna, but argue against the transfer of the S. American speciesP. adenantha. The cowpea complexV. unguiculata s. lato of sect.Catiang forms an uniform and isolated group, distinct from other sections of subg.Vigna, and shows affinity toPhaseolus s. str. by some isoenzymes. The evolutionary relationships of 186 accessions ofCapsicum from Mexico were studied through enzyme electrophoresis. A total of 76 alleles representing 20 genetic loci coding for nine enzyme systems were observed and the allelic variations of enzymes were studied for geographical distribution. Allele frequencies were used to estimate the apportionment of gene diversity within and between populations and to construct a dendrogram based on a similarity matrix containingNei genetic distances. — The gene diversity estimates suggest that the structure ofCapsicum populations in Mexico consists of predominantly homozygous genotypes presumably due to a self-pollinated breeding system and population bottlenecks. Significant genetic differentiation was found mainly between populations of differing geographical regions.—Based on the results of this study, three species of domesticatedCapsicum can be identified in Mexico,C. annuum var.annuum, C. chinense, andC. pubescens. Semidomesticated and wild forms include two species,C. frutescens andC. annuum var.glabriusculum. A sharp geographical division results between the latter species;C. frutescens was collected exclusively in the southeastern states of Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco; whereas wild and semidomesticated forms from the rest of the country areC. annuum. Based upon the similarity of enzyme genotypes of semidomesticated and wild forms, the primary center of domestication of cultivatedC. annuum was estimated to be the region comprising the states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, San Luis Potosi, Veracruz, and Hidalgo in eastern Mexico. Environmental variation in food resources modifies performance of herbivores, in addition to genetic variation and maternal effects. In marine benthic habitats, eutrophication may modify herbivores diets by changing host species composition or nutritional quality of algae for herbivores. We studied experimentally the effects of diet breadth and nutrient availability for the host algae on fitness components of the herbivorous isopod Idotea baltica. We fed the adult isopods with the brown algae Fucus vesiculosus and Pilayella littoralis and juveniles with the green alga Cladophora glomerata. By using half-sib families, we were able to separate the genetic, environmental and maternal effects on intermolt duration and size of the juveniles. The mothers confined to the diet consisting of both Fucus and Pilayella grew better and produced larger egg mass than those having consumed Fucus alone. Nutrient enhancement of algae did not influence the performance of the adult herbivores. However, the juveniles achieved twice the weight as well as shorter intermolt duration when consuming nutrient-treated C. glomerata. Mothers nutrition, either nutrient enrichment of her food algae or diet breadth, did not affect juvenile survival or growth as such, but we found evidence that the broader diet consumed by the mother mediated offspring performance by further accelerating growth rate of the offspring that fed on nutrient-treated alga. Intermolt duration was a highly heritable trait, but size showed very low heritability. Instead, maternal effects on size were substantial, suggesting that differences among mothers in their egg-provisioning ability strongly affect weight gain of their offspring. A high amount of additive genetic variance in intermolt duration implies potential for quick evolutionary responses in the growth schedule in the face of changes in the selective environment. We conclude that eutrophication, in addition to improving growth and reproduction of I. baltica by enhancing food quality and by providing opportunity for broader, more profitable diets, may act as a selective agent on life-history traits. Eutrophication of coastal waters is thus likely to reflect in herbivore density, population dynamics and eventually, grazing pressure of littoral macroalgae. 相似文献

The pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis (L.) was used for a laboratory assessment of seasonal variation in palatability of three freshwater macrophytes: Potamogeton lucens, Elodea canadensis and E. nuttallii. For each species, 2–5 populations were investigated in spring and in summer. Preliminary results showed that the feeding
rate of similarly-aged snails bred under standard conditions was stable over time. In contrast, snail feeding rate on the
three macrophyte species decreased from spring to summer, which was therefore interpreted as a decrease in plant palatability.
This decrease was probably due to tissue maturation, as suggested by the concomitant increase in the dry matter content of
leaves of the three species. The high palatability of the species studied during the spring may prove detrimental in cases
of strong herbivore pressure, and could have consequences for macrophyte distribution among aquatic habitats. 相似文献

Faunal changes within a managed bed of the common reed (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin.) were monitored by bi-monthly sampling over 6 years. The reedbed was subject to an annual cycle of summer draw-down and winter reflooding. Water level fluctuations annually result in two distinct communities becoming established, a wet (submersion) community composed of aquatic invertebrates and a dry (exposure) community composed of terrestrial and semi-aquatic taxa. The most numerous family found in the sampling programme was the Chironomidae. Reedbeds are ecotonal wetlands with the fauna being opportunistic resulting principally from range extension of communities in the neighbouring aquatic and terrestrial areas of permanence. Colonization from aquatic refugia following flooding is relatively slow. The alternation annually between the submergence and exposure conditions is highly disruptive and results in low species diversity and a reduction in invertebrate numbers. The high degree of inter-annual variability recorded demonstrates the importance of long-term sampling programmes. 相似文献

Cross-pollination was tested between different genotypes ofLycopersicon pimpinellifolium in an experimental plot situated in the southerly range of the species. Rates of cross-pollination were found to be highly correlated with flower size and were related to a lesser extent with degree of stigma exsertion. Comparisons of fertility suggest that exsertion of 1.5 mm or more from the anther tube orifice interferes with automatic self-pollination, thereby increasing rates of cross-pollination. A single species ofExomalopsis (Anthophoridae), observed to visit all tested genotypes ofL. pimpinellifolium, was responsible for most of the pollination. Alboglossiphonia polypompholyx spends most of its life cycle endoparasitic in the mantle cavity of the snail Bulinus truncatus — possibly its only host. Adult A. polypompholyx leaves the snail about one month before the commencement of egg-laying. Hatching occurred after about 15 d and after brooding on the venter of the parent for 7–10 d, the young briefly become free-living before entering the mantle cavity of B. truncatus. Within the mantle cavity, A. polypompholyx feeds and grows for 16–20 weeks before leaving the snail as adults. In the field and in laboratory experiments, adult leeches left the snails in August/September and January with cocoons produced in October/November and February/March, respectively. Medicago intertexta andM. ciliaris have been controversially recognized as separate species. The only reliable diagnostic character, gland-tipped trichomes on the fruits inM. ciliaris, is controlled by presence of a single dominant allele, and such one-character taxonomies are debatable. Contributing to the difficulty,M. muricoleptis andM. granadensis, the other two species ofMedicago sectionSpirocarpos subsectionIntertextae, are sometimes confusingly similar toM. intertexta or to each other. Allozyme differences provided 95% verification of the suitability of the gland-tipped trichome character for separatingM. intertexta andM. ciliaris, thus corroborating their recognition as separate taxa. Several measures of allozyme variation indicated thatM. intertexta is more polymorphic than its sister species. Heterozygosity was also highest inM. intertexta, suggestive of a higher outcrossing rate, which is also consistent with larger floral size. Heterozygosity ofM. intertexta was concentrated in Sicily and nearby countries. Taxonomic difficulties in identifying SicilianM. intertexta are well known, and may be the result of interspecific hybridization and introgression.Medicago muricoleptis differed from the above two species in the frequency of several alleles, whileM. granadensis possessed numerous unique alleles consistent with its complete absence of genetic exchange with the other three substantially interfertile species. 相似文献

Trade-offs can maintain genetic diversity and constrain adaptation; however, their magnitude may depend on ecological factors.
I considered whether resistance to the herbicide triazine in Amaranthus hybridus (Amaranthaceae) imposed the trade-off of increasing susceptibility to herbivorous insects. I grew triazine-resistant and
triazine-susceptible plants under contrasting levels of light and fertilization, and quantified susceptibility to herbivores
using the specialist Disonycha glabrata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and the generalist Trichoplusia ni (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Resistance to triazine increased susceptibility to both species of herbivorous insects, as manifested
by greater feeding preference, growth, and survival of herbivores. However, these effects were more pronounced with T. ni and for plants grown under high light. My results demonstrate the presence of a trade-off between resistance to triazine
and susceptibility to herbivorous insects that may in turn impose an ecologically based fitness cost, and illustrate the potential

Intraspecific genetic variation of Echinococcus multilocularis, the etiologic agent of human alveolar echinococcosis, has been evaluated among 76 geographic isolates from Europe, Asia and North America by using sequence data of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA. Relatively low genetic variation was found only in the mitochondrial DNA sequence consisting of 3 protein-coding genes. Pairwise divergence among the resultant 18 haplotypes ranged from 0.03 to 1.91%. Phylogenetic trees and parsimony network of these haplotypes depicted a geographic division into European, Asian and North American clades, but 1 haplotype from Inner Mongolia was unrelated to other haplotypes. The coexistence of the Asian and North American haplotypes could be seen, particularly on the St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea. These data suggest an evolutionary scenario in which distinct parasite populations derived from glacial refugia have been maintained by indigenous host mammals. The nuclear DNA sequence for the immunodominant B cell epitope region of ezrin/radixin/moesin-like protein (elp) was extremely conservative, indicating that the elp antigen is available for immunodiagnosis in any endemic areas. 相似文献
