Leaching of NO 3 ? derived from ammoniacal fertilizers in the topsoil and subsequent uptake of NO 3 ? by plants from deeper layers may be used as a method of biological amelioration of subsurface soil acidity. This paper reports a glasshouse column experiment testing the above concept. Nitrogen with labelled 15N was supplied with and without lime to the surface soil (0–10 cm) as urea, (NH4)2SO4 or Ca(NO3)2 at a rate equivalent to 120 kg N ha?1. Soil columns were regularly watered from the top to facilitate NO 3 ? leaching. An aluminium-tolerant wheat genotype was grown for 38 days. The application of lime with nitrogen fertilizers increased growth of shoot and roots in all soil layers. The application of Ca(NO3)2 resulted in about 66% of recovery efficiency irrespective of whether lime was applied in the surface. This in turn resulted in about 0.2 units increase in rhizosphere pH in the subsurface (10–15 cm) soil layer compared to the same layer of the unlimed control. The supply of urea and (NH4)2SO4 alone or with lime did not increase rhizosphere pH in the subsurface soil layers. Importantly, this study indicates that it is possible to exploit the process of nitrate uptake by wheat to increase pH in acidic subsurface soil.  相似文献

Research in the soil of the tropics mostly has demonstrated the decline of soil organic carbon (SOC) after conversion of primary forest to plantation and cultivated lands. This paper illustrates the dynamics of SOC on the island of Java, Indonesia, from 1930 to 2010. We used 2002 soil profile observations containing organic carbon (C) analysis in the topsoil, which were collected by the Indonesian Center for Agricultural Land Resources Research & Development from 1923 to 2007. Results show the obvious decline of SOC values from around 2% in 1930–1940 to 0.8% in 1960–1970. However, there has been an increase of SOC content since 1970, with a median level of 1.1% in the year 2000. Our analysis suggests that the human influence and agricultural practices on SOC in Java have been a stronger influence than the environmental factors. SOC for the top 10 cm has shown a net accumulation rate of 0.2–0.3 Mg C ha?1 yr?1 during the period 1990–2000. These findings give rise to optimism for increased soil C sequestration in the tropics.  相似文献

Soil solution composition changes with time and distance from the root surface as a result of mass flow, diffusion, plant nutrient uptake and root exudation. A model system was designed, consisting of a root compartment separated from the bulk soil compartment by a nylon net (30 m mesh size), which enabled independent measurements of the change of soil solution composition and soil water content with increasing distance from the root surface (nylon net). K+ concentration in the rhizosphere soil solution decreased during the initial growth stage (12 days after planting, DAP). Thereafter K+ accumulated with time, due to mass flow as the dominating process. The extend of K+ accumulation depended on the initial fertiliser application. As K+ concentrations in soil solution increase, not only as a result of transport exceeding uptake, but also as a result of decreasing soil water content, it is hypothesised that K concentration in soil solution is not the only trigger for the activity of K transporters in membranes, but ABA accumulation in roots induced by decreasing soil matric potentials may add to the regulation. A strong decrease of rhizosphere pH with time is observed as a result of H+ efflux from the roots in order to maintain cation-anion balance. In addition the K+ to Ca2+ ratio was altered continuously during the growing period, which has an impact on Ca2+ uptake and thus firmness of cell walls, apoplast pH, membrane integrity and activity of membrane transporters. The value of osmotic potential in the rhizosphere soil solution increased with time indicating decreasing soil water availability. Modelling approaches based on the data obtained with the system might help to fill in the time gaps caused by the low temporal resolution of soil solution sampling method.  相似文献

Soil water repellency (SWR) has a drastic impact on soil quality resulting in reduced infiltration, increased runoff, increased leaching, reduced plant growth, and increased soil erosion. One of the causes of SWR is hydrophobic fungal structures and exudates that change the soil–water relationship. The objective of this study was to determine whether SWR and infiltration could be manipulated through inoculation with fungi. The effect of fungi on SWR was investigated through inoculation of three fungal strains (hydrophilic – Fusarium proliferatum, chrono-amphiphilic – Trichoderma harzianum, and hydrophobic – Alternaria sp.) on a water repellent soil (WR-soil) and a wettable soil (W-soil). The change in SWR and infiltration was assessed by the water repellency index and cumulative infiltration respectively. F. proliferatum decreased the SWR on WR-soil and slightly increased SWR in W-soil, while Alternaria sp. increased SWR in both the W-soil and the WR-soil. Conversely T. harzianum increased the SWR in the W-soil and decreased the SWR in the WR-soil. All strains showed a decrease in infiltration in W-soil, while only the F. proliferatum and T. harzianum strain showed improvement in infiltration in the WR-soil. The ability of fungi to alter the SWR and enmesh soil particles results in changes to the infiltration dynamics in soil.  相似文献

Walk into any field and you will at once see dozens of plant and animal species. However, below your feet and largely unnoticed, lies a population of unseen millions. Can the introduction of powerful molecular biological techniques increase our understanding of how these hidden bacterial communities function in their natural environment?  相似文献

Soil aggregates govern soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration. But, sparse understanding about the process leads to inaccuracy in predicting potential of soil to stabilize C in warming world. We appraised effects of 43 years of fertilization on relative temperature sensitivity of SOC decomposition (Q10) in soil aggregates to know whether SOC quality or quantity governs Q10. Treatments were: fallow, control, 100% recommended dose of nitrogen (N), N and phosphorus (NP), N, P and potassium (NPK), and NPK + farmyard manure (FYM) (NPK + FYM). Macroaggregates, microaggregates and silt + clay (s + c) fractions were incubated for 16 weeks at 25, 35 and 45 °C, SOC quality (R0) and Q10 were computed. SOC mineralization from macro- and micro- aggregates were 34 and 28% higher than s + c across the treatments. The s + c fraction of NPK + FYM had ~ 41, 40 and 24% higher C decay rate than NPK plots at 25, 35 and 45 °C, respectively. For s + c fraction Q10 increased over other aggregates. Mean Q10 of s + c fraction was ~ 18.3 and 17.5% higher than macro and micro-aggregate-C, respectively. R0 was the lowest for NPK + FYM, suggesting long-term manuring with balanced NPK significantly enhance recalcitrance of C. We observed Q10 of macroaggregates and s + c fraction is controlled by C quality but C quantity governs Q10 of microaggregates in Vertisol. Specifically, microaggregates of NPK + FYM were more temperature sensitive, and could be vulnerable to C loss. Hence, practices facilitating microaggregate formation should be avoided. Thus, we recommend manure application for facilitating C sequestration.

Changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) storage have the potential to affect global climate; hence identifying environments with a high capacity to gain or lose SOC is of broad interest. Many cross-site studies have found that SOC-poor soils tend to gain or retain carbon more readily than SOC-rich soils. While this pattern may partly reflect reality, here we argue that it can also be created by a pair of statistical artifacts. First, soils that appear SOC-poor purely due to random variation will tend to yield more moderate SOC estimates upon resampling and hence will appear to accrue or retain more SOC than SOC-rich soils. This phenomenon is an example of regression to the mean. Second, normalized metrics of SOC change—such as relative rates and response ratios—will by definition show larger changes in SOC at lower initial SOC levels, even when the absolute change in SOC does not depend on initial SOC. These two artifacts create an exaggerated impression that initial SOC stocks are a major control on SOC dynamics. To address this problem, we recommend applying statistical corrections to eliminate the effect of regression to the mean, and avoiding normalized metrics when testing relationships between SOC change and initial SOC. Careful consideration of these issues in future cross-site studies will support clearer scientific inference that can better inform environmental management.  相似文献

Plants and soil are the base for sustainably surviving human beings on the globe as the role of materials, energy, resources and environment (Shao & Chu 2008; Shao et al. 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012a,b; Liu & Shao, 2010; Ruan et al. 2010; Xu et al. 2010, 2012; Shao 2012; Huang et al. 2013). This topic has been extensively investigated for 100 years with more achievements in many sectors and practical significance in conducting high-efficient agriculture and eco-environmental construction. The plant–soil interaction is the core issue of this topic, which has been given much attention for the past 30 years (Wu et al. 2007, 2010; Zhang et al. 2011, 2013; Xu et al. 2012, 2013).  相似文献

Calcium (Ca)-rich food can increase feeding of Lumbricidae. Earthworms can be genetically differentiated at a small spatial scale and acclimatize to the local environment during growth. Soil feeding and subsequent cast production by earthworms affects soil N mineralization. Here, we hypothesized that soil feeding and subsequent cast production by Lumbricidae species increases with high soil Ca content and that this increase is stronger in worms from high-Ca soil. We also hypothesized that changes in the soil feeding of Lumbricidae species along with the Ca content affects the soil N mineralization via changes in the cast production. Using a geophageous earthworm species (Eisenia japonica) originated from two different Ca environments (calcareous soil and sedimentary soil), we investigated cast production and soil N mineralization in three soils (sedimentary soil, sedimentary soil with Ca addition, and calcareous soil). The soil feeding of E. japonica from both origins did not always increase despite the high soil Ca content. We suggest that both the Ca content and other soil conditions (e.g., soil C:N) might be major factors in increasing soil feeding by E. japonica. Furthermore, the influence of Ca addition on cast production varied according to the earthworm origin. As expected, these differences in cast production are linked to soil N mineralization (especially nitrification). In summary, our study suggests that the acclimatization and/or adaptation of Lumbricidae species to local environmental factors not only soil Ca content explains spatially heterogeneous soil N mineralization in forest soil.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the aboveground vegetation in relation to the soil seed bank throughout a 60-year succession process following agricultural abandonment in a semi-arid Mediterranean gypsum habitat. There is little information regarding the relationship between these two community components in the context of succession on semi-arid gypsum soils. Aboveground vegetation and the corresponding seed bank of gypsum plant communities were sampled through a chronosequence of 24 abandoned fields. Generalized linear models were used to model seed species richness and density, redundancy analyses to model the effect of time since abandonment and the effect of soil physicochemical parameters on seed bank species composition, and Mantel tests to analyze resemblance between above- and belowground species composition. In this last case, the effect of time since abandonment was controlled using a partial Mantel test. Mantel correlograms using time intervals instead of distances were used to describe the resemblance of above- to belowground species occurrence in different aged fields. No significant variability in seed species richness, seed density, or species composition due to time since abandonment was found. Differences in seed species composition were mainly due to small spatial scale predictors such as slope and soil calcium content. High correlations between species composition in the soil seed bank and the aboveground vegetation were detected during succession. The lack of a significant trend in aboveground species replacement over time was also reflected in seed bank composition. We concluded that the rapid establishment of strict gypsophyte species relied mainly on the long-term persistence of these species in the seed bank.  相似文献

Ring hydroxylating dioxygenases (RHDOs) are one of the most important classes of enzymes featuring in the microbial metabolism of several xenobiotic aromatic compounds. One such RHDO is benzenetriol dioxygenase (BtD) which constitutes the metabolic machinery of microbial degradation of several mono- phenolic and biphenolic compounds including nitrophenols. Assessment of the natural diversity of benzenetriol dioxygenase (btd) gene sequence is of great significance from basic as well as applied study point of view. In the present study we have evaluated the gene sequence variations amongst the partial btd genes that were retrieved from microorganisms enriched for PNP degradation from pesticide contaminated agriculture soils. The gene sequence analysis was also supplemented with an in silico restriction digestion analysis. Furthermore, a phylogenetic analysis based on the deduced amino acid sequence(s) was performed wherein the evolutionary relatedness of BtD enzyme with similar aromatic dioxygenases was determined. The results obtained in this study indicated that this enzyme has probably undergone evolutionary divergence which largely corroborated with the taxonomic ranks of the host microorganisms.  相似文献

The root microbiota—a fingerprint in the soil?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Background

The root system of a plant is known to host a wide diversity of microbes that can be essential or detrimental to the plant. Microbial ecologists have long struggled to understand what factors structure the composition of these communities. An overlooked part of the microbial community succession in root systems has been the potential for individual variation among plants shaped by early colonisation events such as microbial exposure of the seed inside the parent plant and during dispersal.

Scope

In this review we outline life events of the plant that can affect the composition of its root microbiota and relate ecological theory of community assembly to the formation of the root microbiota.

Conclusion

All plants are exposed to environmental conditions and events throughout their lifetime that shape their phenotype. The microbial community associated with the plant is ultimately an extension of this phenotype. Therefore, only by following a plant from its origin inside the flower to senescence, can we fully understand how the associated microbial community was assembled and what determined its composition.  相似文献

Experiments suggest that biomass-derived black carbon (biochar) affects microbial populations and soil biogeochemistry. Both biochar and mycorrhizal associations, ubiquitous symbioses in terrestrial ecosystems, are potentially important in various ecosystem services provided by soils, contributing to sustainable plant production, ecosystem restoration, and soil carbon sequestration and hence mitigation of global climate change. As both biochar and mycorrhizal associations are subject to management, understanding and exploiting interactions between them could be advantageous. Here we focus on biochar effects on mycorrhizal associations. After reviewing the experimental evidence for such effects, we critically examine hypotheses pertaining to four mechanisms by which biochar could influence mycorrhizal abundance and/or functioning. These mechanisms are (in decreasing order of currently available evidence supporting them): (a) alteration of soil physico-chemical properties; (b) indirect effects on mycorrhizae through effects on other soil microbes; (c) plant–fungus signaling interference and detoxification of allelochemicals on biochar; and (d) provision of refugia from fungal grazers. We provide a roadmap for research aimed at testing these mechanistic hypotheses.  相似文献

Abiotic nitrate incorporation in soil: is it real?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In acid forest soils nitrate (NO3) from anthropogenic nitrogen deposition is retained at levels beyond what can be explained by known biological mechanisms. A number of researchers have hypothesized that abiotic NO3 incorporation into soil organic matter might be responsible for this phenomenon, however studies have been limited to a few temperate forest sites. The goal of this study was to determine if abiotic NO3 incorporation is important across a wide range of soil types. We collected 44 soils from a number of different ecosystem types in North and South America and measured the extent of abiotic NO3 incorporation. Significant abiotic nitrate incorporation did not occur in any of the soils examined. We show that the apparent abiotic incorporation observed in previous studies is likely the result of iron interference with NO3 measurements. Our results suggest that abiotic NO3 incorporation is not a likely explanation for the high rates of NO3 retention observed in some ecosystems.  相似文献

Aims

Biological soil crusts (biocrusts) are widespread in many drylands, where plant growth is limited due to water scarcity. One of their most important functions is the stabilization of the topsoil, particularly in regions with sandy soils prone to desertification. Since the mechanisms playing a role in soil stabilization are poorly understood, this study aims to shed light on the connection between crust stability and different cementing agents.

Methods

We measured the penetration resistance and the concentrations of different cementing agents of biocrusts in the Israeli Negev Desert. Structural equation modelling was performed to examine the direct and indirect effects of the variables analyzed and identify variables that are best able to explain the observed patterns of penetration resistance.

Results

All observed variables showed a high variability within and between sites. Structural equation modelling revealed that the main parameters explaining penetration resistance are the content of fines and the electrical conductivity, while carbonates and organic carbon only have an indirect effect.

Conclusions

Our results suggest that adding silt and clay to (natural or induced) biocrusts is very likely to produce stronger, more stable crusts, which will be more effective in combating desertification and improve their ability to survive trampling by livestock.

This study investigated a solidification treatment process for soils that are contaminated with hydrocarbons at levels of 0.5 and 3.0% by weight of benzene. The contaminated soils were bound in a concrete matrix and the migration of organics from the concrete to air was evaluated. If the hydrocarbon emissions are sufficiently attenuated, the concrete containing such contaminated soil can be used for exterior construction applications.

The experimental specimens consisted of concrete mixtures in which 40% of the sand was replaced with the contaminated soil. The mixtures’ ratio of cement, aggregate, sand, and water is 1:1.5:1.5:0.5 by weight. The study included specimens with and without class C fly ash replacing 10% of the cement. In addition, two unfixed control specimens were prepared for each contamination level. The concrete‐soil mixtures were placed in sealed jars and air was passed through the head space of the jars and then through carbon adsorption tubes for measurement of contaminant flux from the surface of the specimens. Measurements were made during and after concrete curing. The results were fitted to a Fickian diffusion model to estimate effective diffusivity in the concrete‐soil specimens.

The test results showed that the effective diffusivity of the contaminant within the concrete was reduced by three to five orders of magnitude over the molecular diffusivities in unfixed contaminated soil used as control. It was observed that the presence of fly ash in the concrete affects the hydrocarbon release and causes an additional decrease in effective diffusivity of about one order of magnitude. Contaminant emissions during the curing phase were found to exceed rates predicted by the Fickian model. This is apparently due to the water used in the concrete. Total emissions, however, never exceeded values emitted from the unfixed controls. This study indicates that fixation of low hydrocarbon levels within concrete is a technically viable and safe technology for recycling petroleum‐contaminated soil.  相似文献

Interactions between bacteria and protozoa in soil were studied over 2-week periods in the field and in a pot experiment. Under natural conditions the total biological activity was temporarily synchronized by a large rainfall, and in the laboratory by the addition of water to dried-out soil, with or without plants. In the field, peaks in numbers and biomass of bacteria appeared after the rain, and a peak of naked amoebae quickly followed. Of the three investigated groups—flagellates, ciliates, and amoebae—only populations of the latter were large enough and fluctuated in a way that indicated a role as bacterial regulators. The bacterial increase was transient, and the amoebae alone were calculated to be able to cause 60% of the bacterial decrease. The same development of bacteria and protozoa was observed in the pot experiment: in the presence of roots, amoebic numbers increased 20 times and became 5 times higher than in the unplanted soil. In the planted pots, the amoebic increase was large enough to cause the whole bacterial decrease observed; but in the unplanted soil, consumption by the amoebae caused only one-third of the bacterial decrease.  相似文献

During the Gulf Crisis, the State of Kuwait was subjected to hazards caused by the oil well fires. The discharged oil formed over 300 oil lakes, covering land areas in excess of 49 km2. In addition, deposits from aerial fallout covered massive areas of Kuwait's desert soil. It has been widely recognized that the heavily oil‐contaminated soil must be remediated in order to avoid total damage to the land, water ecosystems, and/or the eventual release of hazardous particulate compositions to the atmosphere. A large number of diverse technological options were being considered for the remediation of contaminated soil. Bioremediation techniques involving enhanced landfarming was selected and evaluated at pilot scale

The experiments were initiated in November 1992 at the Burgan oil field in which 16 landfarming plots of 120 m2 each were constructed. The study continued for 18 months, during which time petroleum hydrocarbon concentration, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), and heavy metals were monitored regularly. The result obtained showed that landfarming treatment resulted in more than 80% reduction of oil contamination within 15 months. The treatment also resulted in a substantial reduction of the PAHs concentrations.  相似文献

Thallium is an extremely toxic metal which, due to its similarities to K, is readily taken up by plants grown in Tl-contaminated soils. Thallium is also a precious metal nearly as economically valuable as gold. Thallium is efficiently hyperaccumulated in Iberis intermedia as aqueous Tl(I) with highest concentrations within the vascular network of leaves. In this study we examine the utility of synchrotron X-ray differential absorption-edge computed microtomography (CMT) in determining the distribution and compartmentalization of thallium (Tl) in Iberis intermedia. We found Tl to be distributed in solution throughout the vascular system of I. intermedia. Current laboratory experiments are examining the characteristics and potential recovery of Tl by I. intermedia with the objectives to remediate its toxic risks and to facilitate its reclamation for reuse. However, the recovery and reuse of Tl from I. intermedia by way of phytomining requires knowledge on the speciation, distribution and compartmentalization of thallium. CMT shows great promise for application in a wide variety of metal-related structural issues due to its high 3D resolution and being a non-destructive analysis tool.
