Merozoites were found in blood smears from calves, lambs, and pigs exhibiting signs of acute sarcocystosis after oral infection with sporocysts of Sarcocystis bovicanis, Sarcocystis ovicanis, and Sarcocystis suihominis. In each of 3 experiments, whole blood containing merozoites was transfused from an infected host to 2 uninfected recipients of the same species; 2 additional animals of the same species served as uninfected nontransfused controls. The bovine, ovine, and porcine donors all died of acute sarcocystosis. Clinical signs of sarcocystosis were not seen in any transfusion recipients or controls. All recipients and controls were killed and histologic specimens of esophagus, diaphragm, heart, skeletal muscle, and tongue were examined microscopically. Large numbers of intramuscular cysts were present in transfusion recipients, whereas few or no cysts were present in controls, indicating that S. bovicanis, S. ovicanis, and S. suihominis had been transmitted between intermediate hosts of the same species by blood transfusion. 相似文献

The Blood Transfusion Centers (B.T.C.) are mainly concerned with the selection of CMV infection free blood donors, the screening of the anti CMV antibody high titre plasma donors and the evaluation of specific anti CMV Immunoglobulin preparations. Various serological methods could be used but they are of different value depending the purposes of the B.T.C. The neutralization test (Nt), with the addition of complement is specific and detects the protecting AB against the glycoproteins of the viral envelope. The complement fixation test (CF) using extracts of CMV infected cells as antigen largely varies in its sensitivity according to the quality of the antigen. In any case, the CF test is not sensitive enough to detect a latent CMV infection in a certain percentage of the non immunosuppressed adults, but could be used for the selection of anti CMV antibody high titres carriers. Three sensitive methods: passive haemagglutination, indirect immunofluorescence and indirect ELISA tests, might be used for the detection of latent CMV infections. They detect various AB against various internal and external components of the CMV. They are submitted to various sources of errors. The sensitivity of the indirect IF test is mainly restricted by the quality of the antigen preparation, its specificity by the presence of anti cells antibodies in the sera, the Fc receptors in the antigens and the specificity of the conjugates. The indirect ELISA which is submitted to the same causes of errors is a highly sensitive test, easy to perform, reagents are available, and automatic processors have been developed. When compared with the previous techniques, the ELISA test is suitable for the screening of CMV free donors, when it is performed with an highly sensitive antigen. It could be also used for the screening of high antibody titre carriers: its correlation with the CF test is quite good (r = 0,82). When comparatively applied to the titration of Immunoglobulins preparations, made from plasmas or placentas, for either IM or IV administration, the Elisa test gives AB titres different from those obtained with Nt and indirect IF. The calibration of a standard Immunoglobulin reagent is urgently needed and double blind clinical assays of the protective effect of various preparations of specific anti CMV Immunoglobulins have to be promptly designed. 相似文献

为了解兰州地区人群TTV的感染状况,作者采用套式PCR法,以TTV-DNA的ORFl中的一段309nt的序列为扩增序列,对36份兰州地区无偿献血人群血清DNA进行扩增,将扩增阳性片段测序并进行序列同源性比较,结果发现兰州地区无偿献血人群TTV感染率为52.7%。10份兰州序列之间的同源性为88.6%~95.4%,兰州序列与日本TA287株的同源性为88.1%~93.3%,表明兰州地区无偿献血人群TIN感染非常普遍,兰州地区TTV流行株存在变异,至少有基因亚型存在。 相似文献

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are often associated with chronic diseases and can have severe impacts on host reproductive success. For airborne or socially transmitted pathogens, patterns of contact by which the infection spreads tend to be dispersed and each contact may be of very short duration. By contrast, the transmission pathways for STIs are usually characterized by repeated contacts with a small subset of the population. Here we review how heterogeneity in sexual contact patterns can influence epidemiological dynamics, and present a simple model of polygyny/polyandry to illustrate the impact of biased mating systems on disease incidence and pathogen virulence. 相似文献

The study of 500 blood donors, of 23 prostitutes, 22 confirmed AIDS cases and 19 ARC patients in Abidjan showed that HIV-2 prevalence in blood donors (3.4%) was somewhat higher than that of HIV-1 (2.4%). Furthermore HIV-2 alone was found associated with 14% of AIDS cases and 21% of ARC, while HIV-1 was associated with 32% of the cases. Antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 were found in 54% of AIDS and ARC cases, as well as in 48% of the prostitutes sera. These preliminary results suggest that HIV-2 is pathogenic, being causally involved in some AIDS cases and does not protect from HIV-1 pathogenic potential. 相似文献

ObjectivesTo follow up recipients of 20 000 units of blood to identify any transmissions of infections through blood transfusion.DesignFollow up study of recipients of transfusion.Setting 22 hospitals in north London.ParticipantAdult patients who had recently been transfused.Results9220 patients were recruited, and 5579 recipients of 21 923 units of blood were followed up. No transfusion transmitted infections were identified. The incidence of transfusion transmitted infections was 0 in 21 043 units (95% confidence interval for risk 0 to 1 in 5706 recipients) for hepatitis B; 0 in 21 800 units (0 to 1 in 5911 recipients) for hepatitis C; 0 in 21 923 units (0 to 1 in 5944 recipients) for HIV; and 0 in 21 902 units (0 to 1 in 5939 recipients) for human T cell leukaemia/lymphoma virus. Three patients acquired hepatitis B during or after hospital admission but not through transfusion; 176 (3%) had pre-existing hepatitis B infection. Sixteen (0.29%) patients had hepatitis C, and five (0.09%) had human T cell leukaemia/lymphoma virus.ConclusionsThe current risk of transfusion transmitted infections in the United Kingdom is very small, though hospital acquired infections may arise from sources other than transfusion. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are predicted to play an important role in the evolution of host mating strategies, and vice versa, yet our understanding of host-STI coevolution is limited. Previous theoretical work has shown mate choice can evolve to prevent runaway STI virulence evolution in chronic, sterilizing infections. Here, I generalize this theory to examine how a broader range of life-history traits influence coevolution; specifically, how host preferences for healthy mates and STI virulence coevolve when infections are acute and can cause mortality or sterility, and hosts do not form long-term sexual partnerships. I show that mate choice reduces both mortality and sterility virulence, with qualitatively different outcomes depending on the mode of virulence, costs associated with mate choice, recovery rates, and host lifespan. For example, fluctuating selection—a key finding in previous work—is most likely when hosts have moderate lifespans, STIs cause sterility and long infections, and costs of mate choice are low. The results reveal new insights into the coevolution of mate choice and STI virulence as different life-history traits vary, providing increased support for parasite-mediated sexual selection as a potential driver of host mate choice, and mate choice as a constraint on the evolution of virulence. 相似文献

The transmission of Keystone virus in the mosquito Aedes atlanticus and of Rickettsia rickettsii in the tick Dermacentor andersoni is modeled and analyzed. Both of these infections can be transmitted vertically from an infective parent to newborn offspring as well as horizontally via direct or indirect contacts with infected individuals. The vertical transmission mechanism plays a major role in the maintenance of these infections and its effects are analyzed in detail. This same mechanism can act as a means for controlling the size of the infected host population and an analysis of this effect is also provided. The sensitivity of the threshold parameters and the endemic prevalence rates of the disease to variations in the basic infection transmission components are investigated. The transmission components that are considered include the ability to transmit the pathogen vertically as well as horizontally, the size of the host population, and survival probabilities of the hosts. 相似文献
