Protein turnover rates in neonates have been calculated largely by measuring urinary [15N]urea enrichment following administration of [15N]glycine. Although ammonia has been increasingly recognized as an end product of nitrogen metabolism, in neonates it yields a different estimate of protein turnover than does urea. Comparisons of ammonia and urea end products in parenterally fed neonates have not previously been reported. A third and independent way of estimating protein turnover, developed for adults, is to use breath 13CO2 as an end product following administration of [1-13C]leucine. We therefore carried out simultaneous measurements of protein turnover in 10 parenterally fed neonates, using the three end products. The infants were clinically stable, weighed 2.6 +/- 0.2 kg, and received 3.1 +/- 0.2 g.kg-1.d-1 of amino acid, 2.2 +/- 0.1 g.kg-1.d-1 of lipids, and an energy intake of 90 +/- 4 kcal.kg-1.d-1 (1 kcal = 4.186 kJ). The turnover estimates derived from the 13CO2 and [15N]urea end products were very similar. The [15N]ammonia end product produced values approximately 66% (p less than 0.01) of the other two. We conclude that the ammonia and urea end products probably originate in different precursor pools. The similarity of the urea and breath carbon dioxide results helps validate the use of the urea end product in studying the nitrogen metabolism of parenterally fed neonates. Ideally in future studies two or more end products should be used, since they provide information about different aspects of the neonates' protein metabolism.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of human milk feeding on the nitrogen metabolism of appropriate-for-gestational age infants of birth weight 1.5-2.0 kg. Eight infants received pooled mature human milk. The remaining 20 were divided into two equal groups, who received one of two low-protein, milk-based formulae. The formulae were identical in composition except for the protein source, which was either casein- or whey-predominant. The three diet groups received similar total nitrogen (390 mg N.kg-1.d-1) and energy (500 kJ.kg-1.d-1) intakes. The human-milk-fed group, however, received a significantly higher intake of nonprotein and urea nitrogen and a significantly lower true protein nitrogen. Nitrogen metabolism was studied using a modified constant infusion of [15N]glycine, mixed with the feeding every 2-3 h. Urine was collected in approximately 3-h aliquots and analysed for total ammonia and urea nitrogen. Excretion of the 15N label was measured in urinary urea and ammonia. No differences were seen between the three diet groups in total [15N]urea or [15N]ammonia urinary excretion. However, the concentration of 15N in urinary urea in the human-milk-fed group was lower than in the two formula-fed groups. This reduction in concentration appeared due to a higher dietary intake of urea among the human-milk-fed group, and the consequent dilution of the label in the urine. As a result, protein turnover rates calculated from the [15N]urea end product were artificially raised in the milk-fed group, and were significantly higher than those in the formula groups.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Although the importance of postexercise nutrient ingestion timing has been investigated for glycogen metabolism, little is known about similar effects for protein dynamics. Each subject (n = 10) was studied twice, with the same oral supplement (10 g protein, 8 g carbohydrate, 3 g fat) being administered either immediately (EARLY) or 3 h (LATE) after 60 min of moderate-intensity exercise. Leg blood flow and circulating concentrations of glucose, amino acids, and insulin were similar for EARLY and LATE. Leg glucose uptake and whole body glucose utilization (D-[6,6-2H(2)]glucose) were stimulated threefold and 44%, respectively, for EARLY vs. LATE. Although essential and nonessential amino acids were taken up by the leg in EARLY, they were released in LATE. Although proteolysis was unaffected, leg (L-[ring-2H(5)]phenylalanine) and whole body (L-[1-13C]leucine) protein synthesis were elevated threefold and 12%, respectively, for EARLY vs. LATE, resulting in a net gain of leg and whole body protein. Therefore, similar to carbohydrate homeostasis, EARLY postexercise ingestion of a nutrient supplement enhances accretion of whole body and leg protein, suggesting a common mechanism of exercise-induced insulin action.  相似文献

The effects of regular submaximal exercise on dietary protein requirements, whole body protein turnover, and urinary 3-methylhistidine were determined in six young (26.8 +/- 1.2 yr) and six middle-aged (52.0 +/- 1.9 yr) endurance-trained men. They consumed 0.6, 0.9, or 1.2 g.kg-1.day-1 of high-quality protein over three separate 10-day periods, while maintaining training and constant body weight. Nitrogen measurements in diet, urine, and stool and estimated sweat and miscellaneous nitrogen losses showed that they were all in negative nitrogen balance at a protein intake of 0.6 g.kg-1.day-1. The estimated protein requirement was 0.94 +/- 0.05 g.kg-1.day-1 for the 12 men, with no effect of age. Whole body protein turnover, using [15N]glycine as a tracer, and 3-methylhistidine excretion were not different in the two groups, despite lower physical activity of the middle-aged men. Protein intake affected whole body protein flux and synthesis but not 3-methylhistidine excretion. These data show that habitual endurance exercise was associated with dietary protein needs greater than the current Recommended Dietary Allowance of 0.8 g.kg-1.day-1. However, whole body protein turnover and 3-methylhistidine excretion were not different from values reported for sedentary men.  相似文献

Chickens weighing approx. 1500 g were fasted 64 hr and then continuously infused with [6-3H]glucose to determine effects of ethanol on plasma glucose concentrations and on rates of glucose turnover. Ethanol infusions (222 or 444 mumol/min X kg-1 body weight) did not cause hypoglycemia although the high dose infusion slightly decreased the rate of glucose turnover. Metabolite ratios measured in livers of chickens infused with the high dose of ethanol indicated that the hepatic cytosolic redox state was relatively unchanged. Chickens have an unusual resistance to ethanol-induced hypoglycemia.  相似文献

Contribution of bone turnover to the hypercatabolic state observed in sickle cell anemia is unknown. We examined the association between markers of bone turnover and basal rates of whole body protein turnover and energy expenditure in 28 adolescents with homozygous sickle cell anemia (HbSS) and in 26 matched controls with normal phenotype (HbAA). Whole body protein breakdown and synthesis were measured using a stable isotope of [15N]glycine, resting energy expenditure was measured by whole room indirect calorimetry, and the rate of pyridinoline cross-link (PYD) excretion in urine and fasting serum levels of the type I procollagen carboxy-terminal propeptide (PICP) were measured with commercial kits. Urinary PYD and serum PICP were significantly elevated in HbSS patients. The increase in procollagen synthesis, indicated by high levels of PICP, was significantly correlated with increased whole body protein synthesis. The increase in type I collagen degradation, indicated by high PYD excretion, was significantly correlated with increased protein breakdown. We conclude that increased rates of bone turnover contribute to the increased rates of protein turnover and energy expenditure observed in adolescents with homozygous sickle cell anemia.  相似文献

The age-related decline in fat-free mass is accelerated in women after menopause, implying that ovarian hormone deficiency may have catabolic effects on lean tissue. Because fat-free tissue mass is largely determined by its protein content, alterations in ovarian hormones would likely exert regulatory control through effects on protein balance. To address the hypothesis that ovarian hormones regulate protein metabolism, we examined the effect of menopausal status and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on protein turnover. Whole body protein breakdown, oxidation, and synthesis were measured under postabsorptive conditions using [(13)C]leucine in healthy premenopausal (n = 15, 49 +/- 1 yr) and postmenopausal (n = 18, 53 +/- 1 yr) women. In postmenopausal women, whole body protein turnover and plasma albumin synthesis rates (assessed using [(13)C]leucine and [(2)H]phenylalanine) were also measured following 2 mo of treatment with oral HRT (0.625 mg conjugated estrogens + 2.5 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate, n = 9) or placebo (n = 9). No differences in whole body protein breakdown, oxidation, or synthesis were found between premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Protein metabolism remained similar between groups after statistical adjustment for differences in adiposity and when subgroups of women matched for percent body fat were compared. In postmenopausal women, no effect of HRT was found on whole body protein breakdown, synthesis, or oxidation. In contrast, our results support a stimulatory effect of HRT on albumin fractional synthesis rate, although this did not translate into alterations in circulating albumin concentrations. In conclusion, our results suggest no detrimental effect of ovarian hormone deficiency coincident with the postmenopausal state, and no salutary effect of hormone repletion with HRT, on rates of whole body protein turnover, although oral HRT regimens may increase the synthesis rates of albumin.  相似文献

Growth is accompanied by and depends on energy storage in growing tissue. The rate of energy storage in growing low birth weight infants depends on the rate of energy intake and on the rates of energy excretion and expenditure, both of which (on a body weight basis) are much higher than in adults, and both of which increase with increments of gross energy intake. Energy-balance studies of growing low birth weight infants on gross energy intakes approximating 500 kJ X kg-1 X d-1 of mothers' milk or of infant formula indicate that the composition of extrauterine weight gain of the low birth weight infant differs from that of the fetus of similar gestation, in that the energy storage cost of growth is much higher. Attempts to increase metabolizable energy intake beyond 500 kJ X kg-1 X d-1 by energy supplementation alone do not result in proportionately increased rates of weight gain; low birth weight formulae, in which energy, protein, and mineral contents are all increased can result in large weight gains with proportionate increases in rates of protein and fat accretion.  相似文献

Mice lacking NPY Y1 receptors develop obesity without hyperphagia indicating increased energy storage and/or decreased energy expenditure. Then, we investigated glucose utilization in these animals at the onset of obesity. Fasted NPY Y1 knockouts showed hyperinsulinemia associated with increased whole body and adipose tissue glucose utilization and glycogen synthesis but normal glycolysis. Since leptin modulates NPY actions, we studied whether the lack of NPY Y1 receptor affected leptin-mediated regulation of glucose metabolism. Leptin infusion normalized hyperinsulinemia and glucose turnover. These results suggest a possible mechanism for the development of obesity without hyperphagia via dysfunction in regulatory loops involving NPY, leptin and insulin.  相似文献

Albumin is the major binding protein in the human neonate. Low production of albumin will lower its transport and binding capacity. This is especially important in preterm infants, in whom albumin binds to potentially toxic products such as bilirubin and antibiotics. To study the metabolism of plasma albumin in preterm infants, we administered a 24-h constant infusion of [1-(13)C]leucine to 24 very low birth weight (VLBW) infants (28.4 +/- 0.4 wk, 1,080 +/- 75 g) on the first day of life. The caloric intake consisted of glucose only, and therefore amino acids for albumin synthesis were derived from proteolysis. The fractional synthesis rate (FSR) of plasma albumin was 13.9 +/- 1.5%/day, and the absolute synthesis rate was 148 +/- 17 mg x kg(-1) x day(-1). Synthesis rates were significantly lower (P<0.03) in infants showing intrauterine growth retardation. Albumin synthesis increased with increasing SD scores for gestation and weight (P<0.05). The FSR of albumin tended to increase by 37% after administration of antenatal corticosteroids to improve postnatal lung function (P=0.09). We conclude that liver synthetic capacity is well developed in VLBW infants and that prenatal corticosteroids tend to increase albumin synthesis. Decreased weight gain rates in utero have effects on protein synthesis postnatally.  相似文献

The role of circulating, non-esterified, long-chain fatty acids (NEFA) as a source of energy for the whole animal and skeletal muscle was investigated in fed non-pregnant sheep at rest and during exercise. Infusion of tracer quantities of [1-14C]oleic or [1-14C]stearic acid was combined with the use of arteriovenous difference studies on fed sheep at rest or during a 2 h period of exercise on a belt treadmill moving at 4.5 km h-1. At rest all parameters of NEFA metabolism indicated a minimal role for oxidation. Thus the concentration in plasma (0.07 +/- 0.01 mmol l-1), entry rate (0.08 +/- 0.02 mmol h-1 kg-1 body wt), contribution to whole animal oxidation (1.2 +/- 0.3%) and utilization of NEFA by skeletal muscle (0.046 +/- 0.008 mmol h-1 kg-1 muscle) were all low. Exercise prompted a shift to lipolysis and accordingly the above parameters increased markedly some 13-24-fold. The circulating concentration of ketone bodies showed only a small increase during exercise and consequently the role of ketone bodies as an energy source during exercise was minimal. Glucose utilization by skeletal muscle was considerable in animals at rest and it represented the most significant potential fuel of skeletal muscle. Exercise resulted in a sustained increase of 3-4-fold in the utilization of glucose by skeletal muscle. Thus the traditional view that NEFA and not glucose is a predominant fuel of skeletal muscle of fed sheep should be appraised.  相似文献

Consumption of dihydroxyacetone and pyruvate (DHP) increases muscle extraction of glucose in normal men. To test the hypothesis that these three-carbon compounds would improve glycemic control in diabetes, we evaluated the effect of DHP on plasma glucose concentration, turnover, recycling, and tolerance in 7 women with noninsulin-dependent diabetes. The subjects consumed a 1,500-calorie diet (55% carbohydrate, 30% fat, 15% protein), randomly containing 13% of the calories as DHP (1/1) or Polycose (placebo; PL), as a drink three times daily for 7 days. On the 8th day, primed continuous infusions of [6-3H]-glucose and [U-14C]-glucose were begun at 05.00 h, and at 09.00 h a 3-hour glucose tolerance test (75 g glucola) was performed. Two weeks later the subjects repeated the study with the other diet. The fasting plasma glucose level decreased by 14% with DHP (DHP = 8.0 +/- 0.9 mmol/l; PL = 9.3 +/- 1.0 mmol/l, p less than 0.05) which accounted for lower postoral glucose glycemia (DHP = 13.1 +/- 0.8 mmol/l, PL = 14.7 +/- 0.8 mmol/l, p less than 0.05). [6-3H]-glucose turnover (DHP = 1.50 +/- 0.19 mg.kg-1.min-1, PL = 1.77 +/- 0.21 mg.kg-1.min-1, p less than 0.05) and glucose recycling, the difference in [6-3H]-glucose and [U-14C]-glucose turnover rates, decreased with DHP (DHP = 0.25 +/- 0.07 mg.kg-1.min-1, PL = 0.54 +/- 0.10 mg.kg-1.min-1, p less than 0.05). Fasting and postoral glucose, plasma insulin, glucagon, and C peptide levels were unaffected by DHP.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Effects of glutamine on whole body and intestinal protein synthesis and on intestinal proteolysis were assessed in humans. Two groups of healthy volunteers received in a random order enteral glutamine (0.8 mmol.kg body wt(-1)x h(-1)) compared either to saline or isonitrogenous amino acids. Intravenous [2H5]phenylalanine and [13C]leucine were simultaneously infused. After gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, whole body protein turnover was estimated from traced plasma amino acid fluxes and the fractional synthesis rate (FSR) of gut mucosal protein was calculated from protein and intracellular phenylalanine and leucine enrichments in duodenal biopsies. mRNA levels for ubiquitin, cathepsin D, and m-calpain were analyzed in biopsies by RT-PCR. Glutamine significantly increased mucosal protein FSR compared with saline. Glutamine and amino acids had similar effects on FSR. The mRNA level for ubiquitin was significantly decreased after glutamine infusion compared with saline and amino acids, whereas cathepsin D and m-calpain mRNA levels were not affected. Enteral glutamine stimulates mucosal protein synthesis and may attenuate ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis and thus improve protein balance in human gut.  相似文献

Leucine kinetic and nitrogen balance (NBAL) methods were used to determine the dietary protein requirements of strength athletes (SA) compared with sedentary subjects (S). Individual subjects were randomly assigned to one of three protein intakes: low protein (LP) = 0.86 g protein.kg-1.day-1, moderate protein (MP) = 1.40 g protein.kg-1.day-1, or high protein (HP) = 2.40 g protein.kg-1.day-1 for 13 days for each dietary treatment. NBAL was measured and whole body protein synthesis (WBPS) and leucine oxidation were determined from L-[1-13C]leucine turnover. NBAL data were used to determine that the protein intake for zero NBAL for S was 0.69 g.kg-1.day-1 and for SA was 1.41 g.kg-1.day-1. A suggested recommended intake for S was 0.89 g.kg-1.day-1 and for SA was 1.76 g.kg-1.day-1. For SA, the LP diet did not provide adequate protein and resulted in an accommodated state (decreased WBPS vs. MP and HP), and the MP diet resulted in a state of adaptation [increase in WBPS (vs. LP) and no change in leucine oxidation (vs. LP)]. The HP diet did not result in increased WBPS compared with the MP diet, but leucine oxidation did increase significantly, indicating a nutrient overload. For S the LP diet provided adequate protein, and increasing protein intake did not increase WBPS. On the HP diet leucine oxidation increased for S. These results indicated that the MP and HP diets were nutrient overloads for S. There were no effects of varying protein intake on indexes of lean body mass (creatinine excretion, body density) for either group. In summary, protein requirements for athletes performing strength training are greater than for sedentary individuals and are above current Canadian and US recommended daily protein intake requirements for young healthy males.  相似文献

Heart failure (HF) is a slow progressive syndrome characterized by low cardiac output and peripheral metabolic, biochemical, and histological alterations. Protein loss and reduced protein turnover occur with aging, but the consequences of congestive HF (CHF) superimposed on the normal aging response are unknown. This study has two objectives: 1) to determine whether there was a difference between older age-matched controls and those with stable HF (i.e., ischemic pathology) in whole body protein turnover and 2) to determine whether protein metabolism in liver and skeletal muscle protein turnover is impacted by CHF. We measured the whole body protein synthesis rate with a U-(15)N-labeled algal protein hydrolysate in 10 patients with CHF and in 10 age-matched controls. Muscle fractional synthesis rate of lateral vastus muscle was determined with [U-(13)C]alanine on muscle biopsies obtained by a standard percutaneous needle biopsy technique. Fractional synthesis rates of five plasma proteins of hepatic origin (fibrinogen, complement C-3, ceruloplasmin, transferrin, and very low-density lipoprotein apoliprotein B-100) were determined by using (2)H(5)-labeled l-phenylalanine as tracer. Results showed that whole body protein synthesis rate was reduced in CHF patients (3.09 +/- 0.19 vs. 2.25 +/- 0.71 g protein x kg(-1) x day(-1), P < 0.05) as was muscle fractional synthesis rate (3.02 +/- 0.58 vs. 1.33 +/- 0.71%/day, P < 0.05) and very low-density lipoprotein apoliprotein B-100 (265 +/- 25 vs. 197 +/- 16%/day, P < 0.05). CHF patients were hyperinsulinemic (9.6 +/- 3.1 vs. 47.0 +/- 7.8 microU/ml, P < 0.01). The results were compared with those found with bed rest patients. In conclusion, protein turnover is depressed in CHF patients, and both skeletal muscle and liver are impacted. These results are similar to those found with bed rest, which suggests that inactivity is a factor in depressed protein metabolism.  相似文献

Aging in humans is associated with loss of lean body mass, but the causes are incompletely defined. Lean tissue mass and function depend on continuous rebuilding of proteins. We tested the hypotheses that whole body and mixed muscle protein metabolism declines with age in men and women and that aerobic exercise training would partly reverse this decline. Seventy-eight healthy, previously untrained men and women aged 19-87 yr were studied before and after 4 mo of bicycle training (up to 45 min at 80% peak heart rate, 3-4 days/wk) or control (flexibility) activity. At the whole body level, protein breakdown (measured as [13C]leucine and [15N]phenylalanine flux), Leu oxidation, and protein synthesis (nonoxidative Leu disposal) declined with age at a rate of 4-5% per decade (P < 0.001). Fat-free mass was closely correlated with protein turnover and declined 3% per decade (P < 0.001), but even after covariate adjustment for fat-free mass, the decline in protein turnover with age remained significant. There were no differences between men and women after adjustment for fat-free mass. Mixed muscle protein synthesis also declined with age 3.5% per decade (P < 0.05). Exercise training improved aerobic capacity 9% overall (P < 0.01), and mixed muscle protein synthesis increased 22% (P < 0.05), with no effect of age on the training response for either variable. Fat-free mass, whole body protein turnover, and resting metabolic rate were unchanged by training. We conclude that rates of whole body and muscle protein metabolism decline with age in men and women, thus indicating that there is a progressive decline in the body's remodeling processes with aging. This study also demonstrates that aerobic exercise can enhance muscle protein synthesis irrespective of age.  相似文献

The metabolism of oligodendrocytes has been studied using cultures of oligodendrocyte-enriched glial cells isolated from cerebra of 5–8-day old rats. Cultures containing 60–80% oligodendrocytes were incubated for 16h with [3-14C]acetoacetate, d-[3-14C]3-hydroxybutyrate, [U-14C]glucose, l-[U-14C]glutamine and [1-14C]pyruvate or [2-14C]pyruvate in the presence or absence of other oxidizable substrates. Labelled CO2 was collected as an index of oxidative metabolism and the incorporation of label into total lipids, fatty acids and cholesterol was used as an index of the de novo synthesis of lipids. Glucose, acetoacetate, D-3-hydroxybutyrate, pyruvate and l-lactate were measured to determine substrate utilization and product formation under various conditions. Our results indicate that glucose is rapidly converted to lactate and is a relatively poor substrate for oxidative metabolism and lipid synthesis. Ketone bodies were used as an energy source and as precursors for the synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol. Preferential incorporation of acetoacetate into cholesterol was not observed. Exogenous pyruvate was incorporated into both the glycerol skeleton of complex lipids and into cholesterol and fatty acids. l-Glutamine appeared to be an important substrate for the energy metabolism of these cells.  相似文献

The rate of glucose turnover (R(a)) and gluconeogenesis (GNG) via pyruvate were quantified in seven full-term healthy babies between 24 and 48 h after birth and in twelve low-birth-weight infants on days 3 and 4 by use of [(13)C(6)]glucose and (2)H(2)O. The preterm babies were receiving parenteral alimentation of either glucose or glucose plus amino acid with or without lipids. The contribution of GNG to glucose production was measured by the appearance of (2)H on C-6 of glucose. Glucose R(a) in full-term babies was 30 +/- 1.7 (SD) micromol. kg(-1). min(-1). GNG via pyruvate contributed approximately 31% to glucose R(a). In preterm babies, the contribution of GNG to endogenous glucose R(a) was variable (range 6-60%). The highest contribution was in infants receiving low rates of exogenous glucose infusion. In an additional group of infants of normal and diabetic mothers, lactate turnover and its incorporation into glucose were measured within 4-24 h of birth by use of [(13)C(3)]lactate tracer. The rate of lactate turnover was 38 micromol. kg(-1). min(-1), and lactate C, not corrected for loss of tracer in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, contributed approximately 18% to glucose C. Lactate and glucose kinetics were similar in infants that were small for their gestational age and in normal infants or infants of diabetic mothers. These data show that gluconeogenesis is evident soon after birth in the newborn infant and that, even after a brief fast (5 h), GNG via pyruvate makes a significant contribution to glucose production in healthy full-term infants. These data may have important implications for the nutritional support of the healthy and sick newborn infant.  相似文献

1. Parameters of in vivo glucose utilization by sea bass (132 +/- 6 g, mean +/- SEM) acclimated at 15 degrees C in sea-water were measured after single injection of labelled glucose. 2. Glucose turnover rate (RG; mumol . min-1 . kg-1) was found to be 0.55-065 (2-3H glucose) and 0.34 +/- 0.42 (U14C glucose). 3. Glucose transit time was 443-449 min, glucose mass 233-261 mumol . kg-1, and glucose recycling 37%. 4. Oxygen consumption (MO2) amounted to 94 +/- 6.2 mumol . min-1 . kg-1. 5. The comparison with other fish species, mammals and birds, taking into account body size, temperature, diet, exercise, in poikilotherms and homeotherms leads to the calculation of a glucose turnover index (RGI = RG x 6 x 100 x MO2(-1)). 6. Value of this, generally lower in ectotherm teleosts (2-9), than in endotherms: mammals, birds and thunidae (22-60), confirms the minor quantitative importance of glucose in the metabolism of most fish.  相似文献

Summary Seasonal and nutritionally induced changes of whole body protein metabolism have been studied in 45 to 57 mm shell-length Mytilus edulis from Whitsand Bay, southwest England. The subtraction of measured net protein balances from coincident rates of protein synthesis, determined in vivo by supplying 15N-labelled alga and monitoring the enrichment of excreted ammonia, enabled computation of protein breakdown rates. Over the range of protein absorption from zero to 0.58% of total soft tissue protein 24 h-1, fractional rates of protein breakdown decreased from 0.41 to 0.03%, whereas protein synthesis and net protein balance both increased from 0.25% to 0.39% and from-0.16% to 0.36%, respectively. The progressive reduction in fractional protein degradation with elevated net protein balance represented a protein sparing effect, whereby the efficiency of protein synthesis (defined as net synthesis/overall synthesis) confirmed theoretical predictions of as much as 92% during periods of maximal growth. In addition, 38% of breakdown products were recycled directly to synthesis under conditions of zero net balance, with an increasing contribution evident upon further decreases of protein absorption. The overall response was characterized by a consistently conservative elemental turnover of nitrogen relative to carbon, so that as a fraction of each element absorbed, between 1.2 and 1.9 times as much nitrogen was incorporated within structural materials. Such conservation was most pronounced among mussels starved prior to experimentation, indicating nutritionally related efficiencies in the utilization of resources for synthesis. The changing balance between individual processes also effected large alterations in proportional size of the metabolic pool of free amino acids (0.2 to 14.5% of total soft tissue nitrogen). Finally, it is suggested that adjustments of protein synthetic rate may be significant in the regulation of energy expenditure, accounting for at least 16% of basal energy requirements. Results throughout have been compared and contrasted with those for mammals, and whole-body measurements of both protein synthesis and breakdown proposed as a valuable index for environmental effects on instantaneous growth and metabolism.  相似文献
