We theoretically study mode hybridization and interaction among surface plasmon polariton Bloch wave mode, Fabry–Perot cavity mode, and waveguide mode within a plasmonic cavity composed by two parallel planar bimetallic gratings. Four hybridized modes result from mode hybridization between surface plasmon polariton Bloch wave modes on the two gratings are observed. By changing the dielectric environment, mode hybridization behavior can be manipulated. Importantly, waveguide-plasmon polariton mode due to hybridization between grating supported surface plasmon polariton Bloch wave mode and cavity supported waveguide mode is observed. We demonstrate that surface plasmon polariton Bloch wave mode and Fabry–Perot cavity mode with the same mode symmetry can interact by presenting an anticrossing behavior, which can be controlled by laterally shifting one grating with respect to the other that causes a phase difference shift of the two involving modes. The proposed plasmonic cavity offers potentials for subwavelength lithography, tunable plasmonic filter, and controllable light-matter interaction.  相似文献

We investigate plasmon excitations within a regular grating of double-layered gold/insulator nanoparticles in the infrared and visible spectral region. Provided a flat gold film as substrate, strong coupling between the localized surface plasmon modes and their image-like excitations in the metal is observed. The interaction results in a strong red shift of the plasmon mode as well as the splitting of the modes into levels of different angular momenta, often referred to as plasmon hybridization. The diameters of the nanoparticles are designed in a way that the splitting of the resonances occurs in the spectral region between 0.1 and 1 eV, thus being accessible using an infrared microscope. Moreover, we investigated the infrared absorption signal of gratings that contain two differently sized nanoparticles. The interaction between two autonomous localized surface plasmon excitations is investigated by analyzing their crossing behavior. In contrast to the interaction between localized surface plasmons and propagating plasmon excitations which results in pronounced anticrossing, the presented structures show no interaction between two autonomous localized surface plasmons. Finally, plasmon excitations of the nanostructured surfaces in the visible spectral region are demonstrated through photographs acquired at three different illumination angles. The change in color of the gratings demonstrates the complex interaction between propagating and localized surface plasmon modes.  相似文献

We theoretically investigate the coupling between Tamm plasmons and localized surface plasmons (LSPs) as well as propagating surface plasmons (PSPs) in a multilayer structure consisting of a metallic nanowire array and a spatially separated metal–dielectric Bragg reflector (DBR). A clear anticrossing behavior of the resonances is observed in the dispersion diagram resulting from the coupling, which is well explained by the coupled oscillator model. The coupling also creates new hybrid LSP or PSP modes with narrow bandwidths and unique spectral features. Upon the excitation of these hybrid modes, the local fields underneath the nanowires for the hybrid LSPs or near the lower metal layer surface for the hybrid PSPs are both enhanced greatly as compared with those achieved in the structure without DBR, which has potential applications in nonlinear optics and surface-enhanced spectroscopies.  相似文献

A novel plasmonic structure based on an anticrossing bandgap prism coupling technique is proposed. The study has been carried out using photonic crystals based on diffraction gratings (bounded by dielectrics with identical dielectric functions) together with a high refractive index prism to couple the long-range surface plasmon polaritons to photons. We analyse the structure and demonstrate the ability for tuning the propagation constants of plasmon modes by changing the thickness of the gold grating. The comparison to non-bandgap techniques is studied, and the influence of the plasmonic configuration on the plasmon propagation constant is discussed as well. Experimental measurements were also carried out to confirm the validity of our model.  相似文献

The optical properties of a compound structure with metallic nanoparticle and nanohole arrays are numerically investigated by the means of finite-difference time domain method. We report on the observation of multi-valleys in the reflection spectra due to the excitation of surface plasmon (SP) resonant modes of the compound structure. Simulation results show that multiple SP resonances consist of surface plasmon polaritons on the gold film, localized surface plasmons on the nanoparticles, and coupling mode between them. These findings are important for applications utilizing multiple surface plasmon resonances.  相似文献

We study analytically propagating surface plasmon modes of a Kerr slab sandwiched between two graphene layers. We show that some of the modes that propagate forward at low field intensities start propagating with negative slope of dispersion and positive flux of energy (fast-light surface plasmons) when the field intensity becomes high. We also discover that our structure supports an additional branch of low-intensity fast-light guided modes. The possibility of dynamically switching between the forward and the fast-light plasmon modes by changing the intensity of the excitation light or the chemical potential of the graphene layers opens up wide opportunities for controlling light with light and electrical signals on the nanoscale.  相似文献

A nanoscale surface plasmon all-optical diode is proposed based on a plasmonic slot waveguide having an asymmetric plasmonic grating in the center. The asymmetric configuration of the plasmonic grating and the unique dispersion relations of the plasmonic slot waveguide ensure the nonreciprocal transmission properties. High transmittance contrast ratio of 1,150 is achieved theoretically. The performance of the surface plasmon all-optical diode does not have any high power requirement. This may open a new way for the study of integrated photonic devices based on surface plasmons.  相似文献

The propagation of a surface plasmon polariton wave at the interface of a metal and an ambichiral nanostructured medium was theoretically investigated in the Kretschmann configuration using transfer matrix method. The dependence of optical absorption linear polarization on structural parameters was reported. The results were compared with those obtained from the interface of a metal and a chiral dielectric medium as a reference structure. We found that multiple plasmon modes are excited at the interface of metal and ambichiral dielectric medium. Our calculations revealed that there exist five plasmon modes for chiral, trigonal, and tetragonal structures; three plasmon modes for pentagonal structure; two plasmon modes for hexagonal structure; and one plasmon mode for dodecagonal structure that propagate with different phase speeds. The obtained results showed that only one plasmon mode occurs at all pitches, while other modes exist at some of the pitches of anisotropic chiral and ambichiral dielectric mediums. The time-averaged Poynting vector versus the thickness of metal film confirmed that the energy of photons of incident light is transferred to surface plasmon polariton quasiparticles and the surface plasmon polariton wave is localized at the interface of metal and ambichiral dielectric medium.  相似文献

Because of the interaction between dipole resonances of the inner gold sphere and the outer gold shell, gold-dielectric-gold multishells with sub-50 nm diameter may at most have three hybridization modes of surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Theoretical calculations based on quasi-static theory indicate that there are blending and splitting of SPR bands in the absorption spectra, which makes the number of absorption peak tunable by changing the radius of inserted gold sphere, thickness of gold shell, dielectric constant of middle dielectric shell or outer environment. The two absorption peaks at longer wavelength, which correspond to the hybridization from the bonding shell plasmon and the sphere plasmon, are usually intense and well tunable. The absorption peak at shorter wavelength, which corresponds to the symmetric coupling between the anti-bonding shell plasmon and the sphere plasmon, is relative weak and only occurs with large dielectric constant of the middle shell, small dielectric constant of the outer surrounding, large inner radius of the gold shell, and small radius of the inner gold sphere. Furthermore, the physical origin of these plasmon hybridizations in gold-dielectric-gold multishells nanostructure has also been illuminated by analyzing the local electric field distributions.  相似文献

The surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-induced local field effect in Al-Au-Ag trimetallic three-layered nanoshells has been studied theoretically. Because of having three kinds of metal, three plasmonic bands have been observed in the absorption spectra and the local electric field factor spectra. The local electric field enhancement and the corresponding resonance wavelength for different plasmon coupling modes and spatial positions of the Al-Au-Ag nanoshells with various geometry dimensions are investigated to find the maximum local electric field enhancement. The calculation results indicate that the giant local electric field enhancement could be stimulated by the plasmon coupling in the middle Au shell or the outer Ag shell and could be optimized by increasing the Ag shell thickness and decreasing the Au shell thickness. What is more, the local electric field enhancement also nonmonotonously depends on the dielectric constant of the environment; the local electric field intensity will be weakened when the surrounding dielectric constant is too small or too large.

Localized and propagating surface plasmon resonances are known to show very pronounced interactions if they are simultaneously excited in the same nanostructure. Here, we study the Fano interference that occurs between localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and propagating surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes by means of phase-sensitive spectroscopic ellipsometry. The sample structures consist of periodic gratings of gold nanodisks on top of a continuous gold layer and a thin dielectric spacer, in which the structural dimensions were tuned in such a way that the dipolar LSPR mode and the propagating SPP modes are excited in the same spectral region. We observe pronounced anti-crossing and strongly asymmetric line shapes when both modes move to each other’s vicinity, accompanied of largely increased phase differences between the respective plasmon resonances. Moreover, we show that the anti-crossing can be exploited to increase the refractive index sensitivity of the localized modes dramatically, which result in largely increased values for the figure-of-merit which reaches values between 24 and 58 for the respective plasmon modes.  相似文献

We demonstrate directional enhanced fluorescence emission from fluorophores located above gold wire gratings. In contrast to previous studies on corrugated films, efficient coupling was recorded for multiple plasmon modes associated with both the active and substrate side of the wires. This difference is likely due to the subtle differences in how light interacts with corrugated films versus metal films with periodic subwavelength slots. For corrugated films, coupling between modes on opposite sides of the grating are out of phase, and therefore plasmon modes on the opposite side of the grating are only weakly excited. For wire gratings, transmission and reflection features have been modeled well with a dynamical diffraction model that includes surface plasmons, which allows for efficient coupling to surface plasmon modes on both sides of the grating. We also compared the two mechanisms for fluorescent enhancement, namely the intense electromagnetic field associated with surface plasmons and excited fluorophores radiating via surface plasmon modes. We found the latter mechanism clearly dominant.  相似文献

The collective wave type plasmon polariton self–modes in the metallic (Au, Ag) nano-chain were determined and analyzed with respect to the nano-sphere size and chain separation parameters. At some regions for parameters, the undamped modes were identified when the interaction had been assumed as the near-field-zone dipole coupling. These modes were found on the rim of stability of the linear theory, which indicates artifact of the model of near-field coupling. Inclusion of the medium- and far-field zone contributions to dipole interaction removes, however, instability and allows for fully analytical demonstration of quenching of irradiation losses of plasmon polaritons in the chain to the level of only ohmic attenuation. The plasmon polariton dispersion and the group velocity of plasmon polariton wave packets were examined with respect to nano-sphere and chain parameters and mode polarization. Previous numerical results related to long-range plasmon polariton propagation in the chain are transparently interpreted within the analytical approach.  相似文献

In vitro cell-based assays are widely used during the drug discovery and development process to test the biological activity of new drugs. Most of the commonly used cell-based assays, however, lack the ability to measure in real-time or under dynamic conditions (e.g. constant flow). In this study a multi-parameter surface plasmon resonance approach in combination with living cell sensing has been utilized for monitoring drug-cell interactions in real-time, under constant flow and without labels. The multi-parameter surface plasmon resonance approach, i.e. surface plasmon resonance angle versus intensity plots, provided fully specific signal patterns for various cell behaviors when stimulating cells with drugs that use para- and transcellular absorption routes. Simulated full surface plasmon resonance angular spectra of cell monolayers were compared with actual surface plasmon resonance measurements performed with MDCKII cell monolayers in order to better understand the origin of the surface plasmon resonance signal responses during drug stimulation of cells. The comparison of the simulated and measured surface plasmon resonance responses allowed to better understand and provide plausible explanations for the type of cellular changes, e.g. morphological or mass redistribution in cells, that were induced in the MDCKII cell monolayers during drug stimulation, and consequently to differentiate between the type and modes of drug actions. The multi-parameter surface plasmon resonance approach presented in this study lays the foundation for developing new types of cell-based tools for life science research, which should contribute to an improved mechanistic understanding of the type and contribution of different drug transport routes on drug absorption.  相似文献

Self-assembled photonic crystals grown from different colloidal sizes are coated with gold nanoparticles preferentially on their surface. The effect of localized surface plasmon resonance and the photonic stopband on the Raman scattering from these crystals is analyzed from the angle-dependent scattering measurements. The coupling of photonic and plasmonic modes at the surface of the photonic crystal is verified by measuring the increment in Raman scattering from the crystals containing the gold nanoparticles, and this increment is found to follow the spectral trend of localized surface plasmon resonance.  相似文献

Based on the interplay between propagating surface plasmon polaritons (PSPs) in graphene ribbon and double layer sheets structure, we theoretically demonstrate a tunable strong coupling mechanism significantly different from reported conventional noble metal nanostructures. The strong electromagnetic coupling between the low order antisymmetric and high order symmetric PSPs modes occurs due to the intersections of dispersion curves, which leads to a modification of plasmonic dispersion and multiple significant anti-crossing regions. Of particular, this strong coupling is controllable through external gate voltage of graphene sheets or ribbon. The results offer an effective regime to dynamically tune the interaction of graphene PSPs, which may find applications in the field of nanophotonic devices in the mid-infrared range.  相似文献

We study the properties of surface plasmon polaritons at an interface between a metal and a strongly nonlinear magnetic cladding, characterized by permeability $\mu=\mu_\textrm{l}+\mu_{\textrm{nl}} H^2$ . It is observed that the dispersion of modes has a significant dependance on the incident power. The incident power can be adjusted to control the propagation length. In addition, the structure shows strong confinement of the modes at the interface.  相似文献

We computationally demonstrate one-way optical transmission characteristics of a subwavelength slit. We comparatively study the effect in single layer and double layer metallic corrugations. We also investigate the effect of a dielectric spacer layer between double corrugations to control the volumetric coupling of plasmon and optical modes. We computationally show unidirectional transmission behavior with an ultrahigh contrast ratio of 53.4 dB at λ?=?1.56 μm. Volumetric coupling efficiency through the nanoslit strongly depends on the efficient excitation of both the surface plasmon resonance and metal–insulator–metal waveguide modes. We show that the behavior is tunable in a wide spectral range.  相似文献
