Essential oils were eamined in nine clones of Mentha arvensis, four clones of M. spicata, and 20 clones of M. gracilis. An F1 hybrid of M. arvensis M. spicata, selected on the basis of morphology and chromosome number, was matched with one clone of M. Gracilis. Genes for the inheritance of limonene, 1,8-cineole, linalool, isomenthone, carvone, and piperitenone oide were identified in one clone of M. arvensis and two clones of M. spicata. The range of essential oil compounds detected indicates that no one character can be used to identify M. gracilis, but the critical compounds of the oil of M. gracilis can be derived from crosses of M. arvensis M. spicata.  相似文献

Three major cultivated Mentha spp. (M. arvensis, M. citrata and M. cardiaca) were grown under short-days, normal-days or long-days for 60 cycles. Subsequent to photoperiodic treatment, the plants were assessed for growth behaviour, essential oil content, oil composition and essential oil biosynthesis. The species grew better under long-day conditions. The long-day treatment resulted in flowering in M. citrata, which normally does not flower under our conditions. The oil concentration and biogenesis was maximal in short-day plants. The photoperiodic treatment also affected the oil composition. The observations are discussed in relation to physiology of the oil biogenesis.  相似文献

The pine engraver Ips pini (Say) is known to include three pheromone races, but gene flow between these races has not been investigated. We used maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation to infer gene flow between 22 widely distributed North American populations of I. pini for a total of 217 individuals, based on 354 bp of the cytochrome oxidase I gene. Gene flow was estimated cladistically as migrants per generation (Nm) and as haplotype variation between populations (Nst). Three distinct mtDNA haplotype lineages, generally corresponding to eastern (I), Rocky Mountain (II) and western (III) regions of North America, were resolved with a total of 34 distinct I. pini haplotypes. The distributions of these lineages were largely congruent with the geographical ranges of the ''New York'', ''California'' and ''Idaho–Montana'' pheromone races. Only individuals with lineage I mtDNA were observed among eastern populations, whereas individuals with lineage II or III mtDNA predominated among western populations. Gene flow (Nm and Nst) was generally moderate between all populations. However, the presence of lineage I mtDNA on the eastern side of western North America and the absence of lineage II and III mtDNA in eastern North America suggest directional gene flow from east to west. These results indicate that female-controlled assortative mating among pheromone races may disrupt gene flow between conspecifics, reflecting incomplete pre-mating barriers.  相似文献

The variation of the essential oils composition of 10 Tunisian Mentha x rotundifolia (L.) Huds. Populations and their antioxidant activity were assessed. Essential oils showed high percentages of oxygenated monoterpenes and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons. Rotundifolone, p-menthane-1,2,3-triol, β-caryophyllene and germacrene D were identified as main compounds at the species level. A variation in the essential oil composition was observed according to the populations and ecological factors. The populations 7, 8, 9 and 10 from the upper semi-arid bioclimatic zone and situated at high altitudes, exhibited the highest amount of rotundifolone. The populations 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 from the lower humid showed a rotundifolone/β-caryophyllene/germacrene D chemotype. The population 6, situated at the lowest altitude, was characterized by the highest amount of p-menthane-1,2,3-triol. The level of antioxidant activity of the populations was linked to their chemical composition difference. The highest scavenging activity and the best ability to reduce ferric ions were recorded for the population 10. The most important capacity to inhibit β-carotene bleaching was revealed for the population 8. For all populations, the antioxidant activities were substantial but lower than antioxidant standards used (Trolox and BHT).The populations (7, 8, 9 and 10) from the upper semi-arid showed the best yields of essential oils and the highest contents of rotundifolone. Chemotypes within these populations could be selected for improvement programs.  相似文献

Populations of Mentha longifolia, an endangered species in Israel, were tested for essential oil composition and conservational ability. In 2002-2003, 25 wild populations country-wide were tested, indicating population divergence into two chemotypes. Chemotype A was characterized by high levels of menthone and pulegone, and chemotype B by high levels of piperitenone oxide and piperitone oxide. Chemotype A was more abundant (22 of 25 populations) than chemotype B (11 of 25 populations). However, a chemotype/population interaction was not recorded (P?>?0.05). In spring 2003, seven of the 25 wild populations were resampled, propagated, and cultivated at the Newe Ya'ar campus. Then, in 2004, the propagated plants were tested for essential oil composition. The propagated plants maintained the essential oil composition as well as the chemotype-frequency distribution of the original wild population from which they were obtained. Since a chemotype/population interaction was not recorded, and the cultivated plants displayed the wild population essential oil composition, it can be concluded that i) the chemotype diversity is genetically based, and ii) the M. longifolia populations sampled can be horticulturally conserved.  相似文献

Plants of Japanese mint (Mentha arvensis L. subsp. haplocalyxBriquet var. piperascens Holmes) were grown under 100, 64, 49and 28% conditions of prevailing radiation for 10 weeks, withharvests at 4, 6.8 and 10 weeks. Measurements were made on plantgrowth, yields of essential oil and chemical composition ofoil. The greatest morphological responses to increased shading intensitywere increases in stem length and leaf area. Little responseto shading was shown by mean relative growth rate (RGR) or meannet assimilation rate (NAR) while that of mean leaf area ratio(LAR) was marked. No significant differences in oil yield werefound among different treatments at the final harvest nor werethere great differences in amounts of menthol and menthone,two important constituents of Japanese mint oil. The experiments indicate that, within the experimental limitsimposed, Japanese mint tends to compensate in growth and oilproduction for shading effects. This work may also explain thedifferent and sometimes contradictory results reported in theliterature on the effects of shading on mint oil production  相似文献

The external phenolic resin on the leaves of Larrea tridentata contains eighteen flavone and flavonol aglycones (mostly as methyl ethers), one dihydroflavonol and two lignans (including nordihydroguaiaretic acid). Except for a few isolated 2n populations which exhibited minor differences, a single chemical type was observed for all three ploidy levels (2n, 4n and 6n) in the North American L. tridentata suggesting an autoploid origin for the tetraploid and hexaploid races. The resin chemistry of the North American taxon was most similar to that of the Argentinian diploid L. divaricata, although the resin of the latter taxon did not contain the three 8-hydroxyflavonols; however, 8-hydroxyflavonol aglycones were detected in Peruvian populations of L. divaricata.  相似文献

Geographical variation in the periodicity of gypsy moth outbreaks   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The existence of periodic oscillations in populations of forest Lepidoptera is well known. While information exists on how the periods of oscillations vary among different species, there is little prior evidence of variation in periodicity within the range of a single Lepidopteran species. The exotic gypsy moth is an introduced foliage-feeding insect in North America. Its populations are characterized by high amplitude oscillations between innocuously low densities and outbreak levels during which large regions of forests are defoliated. These outbreaks are recognized to arise periodically with considerable synchrony across much of the gypsy moth's North American range. Our analysis indicates that gypsy moth outbreaks in North America are periodic but they exhibit two dominant periodicities: a primary period of 8–10 yr (as previously reported) and a secondary period of 4–5 yr (a new finding in this study). The outbreak periodicity varied geographically and this variation was associated with forest type. We found that in the most susceptible forest types, those on xeric sites where oak is often mixed with pines, outbreak periodicity had a more dominant 5-yr period while in forest types characteristic of more mesic sites where oak was mixed with maples and other species, cycles were clearly operating on a 10-yr period.  相似文献

Samples of 31 populations of Parthenium hyserophorus from varius areas of its world distribution were examined for their sesquiterpene lactone composition. On the basis of the occurrence of sesquiterpene lactones the samples were divided into seven chemical types. The most common is a type represented by plants containing parthenin as a major sesquiterpene lactone, and coronopilin and tetraneurin-A. All samples from North and Central America, Venezuela, South Africa, India, Australia, and one sample from Jamaica belong to this type. This suggests that P. hysterophorus recently introduced to South Africa, India and Australia originates in North and (or) Central America. On the other hand, there is a great diversity among examined South American populations. Plants from these populations usually contain hymenin which is their major sesquiterpene lactone. Some populations may also contain coronopilin, hysterin, and dihydroisoparthenin. A high diversity in the sesquiterpene lactone chemistry and the morphological differences between individual South American populations of this species indicate the possible existence of several taxa.  相似文献

Molecular variation in Antitrichia curtipendula (Hedw.) Brid. s.l. was studied based on the nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the chloroplast markers trn L- trn F and rpl 16, and analysed by neighbour joining (for ITS; recombination present), maximum parsimony (chloroplast markers) and TCS (haplotype network). Old World plus E North American populations belong to a different lineage than those of W North America. These are molecularly well differentiated and are treated as A. curtipendula and A. gigantea (Sull. & Lesq.) Kindb. Two distinct groups of Old World haplotypes are separated by one 'missing' haplotype and are interpreted as cryptic species. Tropical African populations share one ITS deletion and form a lineage within one of the cryptic species. Molecular variation within A. gigantea , within each of the two cryptic Old World plus E North American (except tropical African) haplotype groups, and among tropical African populations are of similar magnitude, suggesting that analogous mechanisms and similar time spans explain the found variation. Events related to Pleistocene climatic oscillations are suggested as having caused this differentiation within each group, whereas the African lineage was probably split off before this. Two morphological races have previously been recognized within the sedge, Carex lepidocarpa , in Sweden. These largely allopatric races are accorded specific status, as C. lepidocarpa s.s. and C. jemtlandica , in Scandinavian floras. A study of allozyme variation in populations from 80 Swedish sites supports the morphological evidence for racial differentiation within C. lepidocarpa. The two races differ from each other in terms of allele frequencies at polymorphic loci and also show different levels of within-population genetic diversity. Material that is morphologically referable to C. lepidocarpa s.s. is characterized by relatively high levels of allozyme variation, both within and between populations. Carex lepidocarpa s.s. is widespread in southern Sweden. In contrast, material that is morphologically assignable to C. jemtlandica shows low levels of within-population genetic diversity, and there is little differentiation between the geographically separated isolates of C. jemtlandica in northern Sweden and on the Baltic island of Gotland. The high degree of morphological similarity and moderate levels of genetic differentiation between the two races within C. lepidocarpa indicate that it is more appropriate to recognize the races as subspecies than as species. The low levels of genetic variation in C. jemtlandica , both within and between populations, suggest that C. jemtlandica may have arisen from C. lepidocarpa (or a near ancestor of C. lepidocarpa) as a result of population fragmentation and isolation in glacial refugia, or during the process of post-glacial colonization of Scandinavia. Lack of allozyme evidence for extensive hybridization between the two races of C. lepidocarpa , despite their ability to hybridize freely where their ranges overlap at present, supports the suggestion that the two races have had separate post-glacial histories.  相似文献

Mentha spicata is the commonest mint species growing wild in Greece, exhibiting great morphological and chemical variability. The oil content from different wild populations examined ranged from 0.3% to 2.2%; the most common value being ca.1%. Though commercially exploited M. spicata plants are always rich in carvone and dihydrocarvone, wild populations are very variable; four different chemotypes were distinguished within the species. These chemotypes are characterized by the high contribution of the following compounds: (1) linalool, (2) piperitone oxide or piperitenone oxide, (3) carvone-dihydrocarvone and (4) pulegone-menthone-isomenthone. This chemical variability suggests the possibility of further developing and exploiting the full potential of the species.  相似文献

An examination of the leaf oils of Melaleuca quinquenervia over its geographical range in Australia and Papua New Guinea has shown wide variation in chemical composition but only two major chemotypes. Chemotype 1 is comprised of E-nerolidol (74–95%) and linalool (14–30%) and is found from Sydney, north along the east coast of Australia to Selection Flat, New South Wales, with an isolated occurrence near Maryborough, Queensland. Two divisions occur in this chemotype which are based on the presence or absence of significant proportions of linalool (14–40%). Chemotype 2 contains 1,8-cineole (10–75%), viridiflorol (13–66%), α-terpineol (0.5–14%) and β-caryophyllene (0.5–28%) in varying proportions and order of dominance in the oils. It is found throughout the distribution of the species, from Sydney to Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia. Within chemotype 2 there appears to be a continuous spread of oil composition without formation of any further discrete divisions as in chemotype 1.Analyses have shown that M. quinquenervia trees that occur at latitudes south of 25°S have high oil yields (1–3% w/w%, fresh leaves) and comprise chemotypes 1 and 2. North of 25°S, however, chemotype 1 does not occur and oil yields amongst the Australian populations are uniformly low (0.1–0.2%).  相似文献

Our data on the intercontinental population biology of Letharia vulpina show an unexpected shift from a recombining North American population with unique haplotypes to genetically depauperate Swedish and Italian populations, each with many representatives of a single repeated haplotype. Analysis of eight loci in 47 individuals supported recombination in North American populations and showed almost no variation among European populations. We infer that a genetic bottleneck caused by limited long-distance dispersal accounts for the lack of genetic variation found in marginal populations. This lack of variation in the European populations makes it impossible to use population genetic means to distinguish clonal reproduction from self-fertilization or even outcrossing, but phenotype indicates that reproduction in the marginal populations is by clonal spread, via soredia and isidioid soredia.  相似文献

The northern pike Esox lucius L. is a freshwater fish exhibiting pronounced population subdivision and low genetic variability. However, there is limited knowledge on phylogeographical patterns within the species, and it is not known whether the low genetic variability reflects primarily current low effective population sizes or historical bottlenecks. We analysed six microsatellite loci in ten populations from Europe and North America. Genetic variation was low, with the average number of alleles within populations ranging from 2.3 to 4.0 per locus. Genetic differentiation among populations was high (overall θST = 0.51; overall ρST = 0.50). Multidimensional scaling analysis of genetic distances between populations and spatial analysis of molecular variance suggested a single phylogeographical race within the sampled populations from northern Europe, whereas North American and southern European populations were highly distinct. A population from Ireland was monomorphic at all loci, presumably reflecting founder events associated with introduction of the species to the island in the sixteenth century. Bayesian analysis of demographic parameters showed differences in θ (a product of effective population size and mutation rate) among populations from large and small water bodies, but the relative differences in θ were smaller than expected, which could reflect population subdivision within the larger water bodies. The pollination ecology of Gentianella uliginosa , a rare annual in The Netherlands, was studied in three relatively small coastal dune populations. In all populations, the species was fully self-compatible: manual self pollination resulted in a seed set of 92–94%. Autofertility was also high (seed set of caged, unhandled flowers 80–85%). The homogamous flowers were visited by Bombus pascuorum , which collected nectar and transported pollen sternotribically. Differences among populations in bumblebee visitation rate did not affect natural seed set. In one plot, seed set following natural pollination was lower than after manual selñng, and as high as after spontaneous selñng. As flowers here were also visited frequently, this might be due to pollen limitation through heterospecific pollen competition. Support for this hypothesis was derived from another population, where seed set after natural pollination was lower in a plot dominated by co-flowering Mentha aquatica than in a plot with few Mentha. However, differences in water availability might also have caused this. In one population, seed sets of the cross pollination and spontaneous selfing treatments were lower than those of the manual selñng and natural pollination treatments. Whether the low outcrossing success can be attributed to small differences in the treatment of the experimental plants or to outcrossing depression remains unclear. We conclude that this annual species is most likely a predominant selfer. Its high autofertility is probably an adaptation to its wet dune slack habitat, where reproductive assurance may be important to cope with unpredictable fluctuations in water table, summer droughts and pollinator service.  相似文献

Juniperus communis var. communis L. is an aromatic plant – typical boreal element of flora. In the extensive literature concerning J. communis, there is much data on the composition and the content of essential oil of needles and coneberries, but a detailed analysis of terpene distribution within and between populations is missing. A representative pool of 74 J. communis individuals originating from ten populations of Northern Poland was investigated in order to evaluate the intra‐ and interpopulational variability of the terpene pattern. Headspace solid‐phase microextraction (HS‐SPME) coupled with GC/MS and GC/FID was applied in achiral and enantioselective analysis. The majority of the samples (85%), despite different origin, were similar in the terpene pattern. High diversity of terpenes was observed within the populations and low diversity between them. High variation of enantiomeric composition was in accordance with large variation of individual compounds in general (achiral analysis). J. communis samples from Northern Poland could be distinguished by the α‐pinene/sabinene ratio, and they were divided into three chemical races.  相似文献

During screening of some essential oils against Penicillium italicum, the oils of Mentha arvensis, Ocimum canum and Zingiber officinale were found to exhibit absolute fungitoxic activity against the test fungus. The oils were subsequently standardized through physico-chemical and fungitoxic properties. Practical applicability of the essential oils was observed in control of blue mould rot of oranges and lime fruits caused by P. italicum during storage. The Mentha oil-treated oranges and lime fruits showed enhancement of storage life of 6 and 8 days, respectively. The storage life of Ocimum oil-treated oranges and lime fruits was found to be enhanced by 6 days while in the case of Zingiber oil, it was 4 and 8 days enhancement of shelf life of oranges and lime fruits, respectively. Studies of natural and sexual selection in wild populations of Drosophila have historically provided strong inference for the maintenance of inversion polymorphism. Analysis of geographical variation in the Drosophila robusta chromosomal data collected over more than 50 years from 133 natural populations across eastern North America has confirmed several north–south and east–west clines in the frequencies of some gene arrangements and linked arrangement combinations. Patterns of geographical variation, including several north–south clines, revealed by regression and spatial autocorrelation analyses are concordant with palaeoclimatic shifts, Pleistocene glaciations and historical changes in the composition of North American forest communities. Because D. robusta is a sap-breeder, using the microbe-infested sap exudates of a number of deciduous tree species in which they carry out their life cycle, shifts in climate and palaeovegetation types since the formation of the eastern deciduous forests in the Miocene are hypothesized to be major factors influencing patterns of inversion polymorphisms across the range of this drosophilid species. In areas where sharp deviations in frequencies have been observed, particularly in the mid-western and western portions of the range, these divisions parallel historical geographical disjunctions in the species range that have yet to promote divergence and species formation despite the long history of D. robusta in North America.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 81 , 395–411.  相似文献

For about twenty-five years a fairly widespread disease of bulbous iris has been known, the cause of which has always been attributed to a biologic race of the stem eelworm Ditylenchus dipsaci (Kühn, 1857), Filipjev, 1936.
Thorne (1945) showed that the nematode causing rot in potato tubers is different from D. dipsaci and named it D. destructor. This nematode has since been reported from Mentha arvensis L. by Hurst (1948) and from Sonchus arvensis L. by Goodey & Goodey (1949).
Examination of nematodes from diseased iris bulbs showed them to possess rounded tail tips and six incisures on each lateral field; characters by which Ditylenchus destructor is distinguished from D. dipsaci.
Cross-inoculation experiments showed that the eelworm causing disease in potato tubers would invade and set up characteristic symptoms in iris bulbs and, in the opposite direction, the eelworm responsible for disease in iris bulbs would give rise to characteristic symptoms in potato tubers. Transfer was also effected from potato and iris to Mentha arvensis and from iris to Sonchus arvensis.
The history of the disease in bulbous iris is briefly reviewed and the biology of Ditylenchus destructor discussed and compared with that of D. dipsaci.
The conclusion that D. destructor is the nematode causing eelworm disease of bulbous iris has been reported earlier (Goodey, J. B. 1950).  相似文献
