Although information concerning variation among and within populations is essential to understanding an organism's life history, little is known of such variation in any species of scorpion. We show that reproductive investment by the scorpion Centruroides vittatus varied among three Texas populations during one reproductive season. Females from the Kickapoo population produced smaller offspring and larger litters than females from the Independence Creek or Decatur populations; this pattern remained when adjusting for among population variation in either female mass or total litter mass. Relative clutch mass (RCM) and within-litter variability in offspring mass (V*) did not differ among populations. Among-population variation may result from genetic differences or from phenotypically plastic responses to differing environments. Within populations, the interrelationships among reproductive variables were similar for Decatur and Independence Creek: females investing more in reproduction (measured by total litter mass, TLM) produced larger litters and larger offspring, and V* decreased with increased mean offspring mass (and with decreased litter size at Decatur). At Kickapoo, larger females produced larger litters and had larger TLM; females investing more in reproduction produced larger litters but not larger offspring. Within litter variability in offspring mass was not correlated with any reproductive variables in this latter population. These patterns may be explained by the fractional clutch hypothesis, the inability of females precisely to control investment among offspring or morphological constraints on reproduction. 相似文献

The scorpion, Centruroides vittatus, lives in groups, which may allow females to discriminate among mates. We examine possible female mate discrimination based on the duration of the kiss phase of courtship, during which sperm is transferred, and on the duration of the promenade a deux phase of courtship that precedes sperm transfer. Larger males spent less time during the promenade and more time during the kiss phases of courtship. We discuss the implications of this to sexual selection in scorpions. 相似文献

For the first time the scanning electron microscope was used to compare developmental changes in scorpion embryos and the first and second stadia. In the buthid species of this study, Centruroides vittatus, and all other scorpions, the newborn climb up on their mother's back and remain there without feeding for several days. At this location, they undergo their first molt and in a few days they disperse, fully capable of foraging in the terrestrial environment. The results here support earlier suggestions that the first stadium (pronymph) is a continuation and extension of embryological development. The first molt results in a nymph with exoskeletal features much like those in the adult. In the first molt the metasoma becomes relatively longer, and the sting (aculeus) becomes sharp and functional. The metasomal segments are modified for dorsal flexion and sting use. The embryos and the pronymphs have spiracles that open into an invagination near the posterior margin of flap-like abdominal plates in segments 4-7 of the ventral mesosoma. The second instars have spiracles that lead to book lungs farther anterior in sternites. Tubular legs with cylindrical segments in embryos and pronymphs become more sculptured and oval in the transverse plane. Each leg in the pronymph has a blunt, cup-shaped tip while distal claws (ungues, dactyl) are present in the second instar and subsequent stages. There are some sharp bristles and primordial sensilla in the pronymphs, but the second stadium has adult-like surface features: rows of knobs or granulations (carinae), serrations on the inner surfaces of cheliceral and pedipalpal claws, filtering hairs at the mouthparts, peg sensilla on the pectines, and mechano- and chemoreceptor sensilla on the body and appendages. Scorpion embryos and pronymphs have some structures like fossil scorpions thought to have been aquatic. There is a gradual development of features that appear to be terrestrial adaptations. Evidence is provided for the formation of the sternum from third and fourth leg coxal primordia and possibly from the first abdominal segment. Maturation, minimum length at first maturity, spawning season, spawning periodicity, sex-ratio and absolute fecundity of Mystus vittatus, a common bagrid catfish, have been investigated. The observations show that spawning takes place during September and October. Each individual spawns only once in the season as evidenced by the study of the intraovarian ova. A previously undescribed toxic peptide named Cl13 was purified from the venom of the Mexican scorpion Centruroides limpidus. It contains 66 amino acid residues, including four disulfide bonds. The physiological effects assayed in 7 different subtypes of voltage gated Na+-channels, showed that it belongs to the β-scorpion toxin type. The most notorious effects were observed in subtypes Nav1.4, Nav1.5 and Nav1.6. Although having important sequence similarities with two other lethal toxins from this scorpion species (Cll1m and Cll2), the recently developed single chain antibody fragments (scFv) of human origin were not capable of protecting against Cl13. At the amino acid sequence level, in 3 stretches of peptide Cl13 (positions 7–9, 30–38 and 62–66) some differences with respect to other similar toxins are observed. Environment perception by scorpions is an issue of great interest, and there is controversy about the use of pectines in this function. This paper investigates the mechanoreceptive function of pectines of the yellow scorpion Tityus serrulatus. The study was conducted in laboratory conditions from July 2003 to July 2004. Ninety females were maintained in six terraria (N = 15). Three of them were named “control” group (intact pectines) and the others “treatment” group (pectines covered with paraffin). Three experimental tests (an ethogram, a test of prey detection and a test of perception of substrate-borne vibrations) were performed to compare skills of animals with and without blocked pectines. The ethogram showed that treated individuals significantly reduced their exploratory activities, spent more time resting, and aggregated more than the control ones. Prey detection tests showed that the blocking of pectines made the yellow scorpions inefficient to detect and capture prey. Vibration tests showed that animals with blocked pectines also did not respond to the vibrations produced in the substrate, whereas the opposite occurred with the control group. These results suggest a mechanoreceptive function for T. serrulatus pectines, and show that the detection of ground vibrations by these structures is important for prey perception and orientation in the Brazilian yellow scorpion. 相似文献

Scorpions, especially in urban areas of tropical and subtropical regions, present a common risk of poisoning. In Mexico, scorpion envenomation is considered a public health problem. Despite the frequency of scorpion sting cases, there are to date no uniform criteria for their treatment. In Mexican traditional medicine, different plant species have been widely used as a remedy for treating scorpion poisoning. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of Bouvardia ternifolia, Aristolochia elegans and Vitex mollis extracts on Centruroides limpidus limpidus venom lethality in mice, and to determine their antagonist activity on guinea pig ileum. The hexane and methanol extract from B. ternifolia modified the LD50 of C. limpidus limpidus venom from 0.750 +/- 0.08 to 1.64 +/- 0.19 and 1.16 +/- 0.14 mg/kg, respectively. The extracts of A. elegans produced lower antitoxic activity, while extracts of V. mollis did not show any protection. On in vitro test, addition of B. ternifolia and A. elegans extracts strongly inhibited, in a concentration-dependent manner, the ileum contractions induced by venom. In general, the results demonstrated the effectiveness of these two plant species in modifying the lethality of C. limpidus limpidus venom in mice. 相似文献

Summary The retinal efferents of the catfish, Mystus vittatus, were investigated with the use of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique. Most retinal fibres extended contralateral to the eye that had received HRP label, while a few fascicles projected to the ipsilateral side without decussation in the optic chiasma. The contralateral fibres projected to the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the nucleus opticus dorsolateralis, the nucleus of the posterior commissure, the nucleus geniculatus lateralis, pretectal nuclear complex, and to two layers of the optic tectum, i.e., stratum fibrosum et griseum superficiale and stratum griseum centrale. The accessory optic tract arose from the inner area of the optic tract and extended ventromedially to the accessory optic nucleus. The ipsilateral fascicles projected to almost all the above mentioned nuclei, but these projections were comparatively sparse. Voltage-gated potassium channels of the ether-a-go-go related gene (ERG) family are implicated in many important cellular processes. Three such genes have been cloned (erg1, erg2 and erg3) and shown to be expressed in the central nervous system (CNS) of mammalians. This communication describes the isolation
and characterization of two isoforms of scorpion toxin (CeErg4 and CeErg5, systematic nomenclature γ-KTx1.7 and γ-KTx1.8,
respectively) that can discriminate the various subtypes of ERG channels of human and rat. These peptides were purified from
the venom of the Mexican scorpion Centruroides elegans elegans. They contain 42 amino acid residues, tightly folded by four disulfide bridges. Both peptides block in a reversible manner
human and rat ERG1 channels, but have no effect on human ERG2. They also block completely and irreversibly the rat ERG2 and
the human ERG3 channels hence are excellent tools for the discrimination of the various sub-types of ion-channels studied.

Summary The reproductive cycle and reproductive effort (RE) of 2 populations of the acmaeid limpet Patelloida mufria were investigated in a subtidal region of N.S.W., Australia. These two populations had vastly different densities, rates of growth and mortality. Nonetheless, their patterns of spawning were remarkably similar with 5 spawning periods during the year of monitoring, and their values for RE were very similar; individuals from each population spawned about 35% of their somatic weight each 6 months. This does not, therefore, conform with theories that the RE of populations should be correlated with their rates of mortality. The results for P. mufria were compared with those of 4 populations of Cellana tramoserica and 2 of P. alticostata which had been studied previously at this location. There was still no general correlation between RE and mortality, but by only using certain combinations of these 8 populations (i.e. only one from each species at a time), positive or negative correlations could be obtained. This illustrated the need to ensure that intraspecific variability is accounted for in any analysis of life-history strategies. Finally, it was concluded that instead of the absolute vale of RE being important, the amount of flexibility in this and other traits may represent the real difference in strategies amongst species. 相似文献

We studied the effects of primiparity on litter size, offspring size, and cub loss in brown bears (Ursus arctos) in two study areas (north, south) in Sweden from 1987 to 2006. Sexually selected infanticide (SSI) has been suggested previously
as a mortality factor in our study populations. Females in the south became primiparous earlier than females in the north.
Primiparous females had significantly smaller litters of cubs than multiparous females. We found no evidence that primiparity
was costly in terms of the interlitter interval. Primiparous mothers had a higher probability of cub loss than multiparous
mothers. The probability of cub loss was analyzed separately for the pre-mating and the mating season. The probability of
cub loss by primiparous females in the pre-mating season increased with both increasing population density and deteriorating
food conditions, whereas the probability of cub loss during the mating season decreased with increasing age of primiparity
and increased with male turnover (a variable predicting SSI). The temporal patterns of cub loss by primiparous females suggested
that the critical times for reproductive success by primiparous females were the pre-mating season (from birth to shortly
after leaving the den) and the mating season. Cub loss in these periods was independent and caused by different factors. Cub
loss before the mating season seemed to be most influenced by food conditions, whereas that during the mating season appeared

In this study, polymorphisms in the goat GnRHR gene exon 1 were detected by PCR-SSCP and DNA sequencing methods in 786 individuals from two different goat breeds. Two haplotypes (A and B), two observed genotypes (AA and AB), and two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected, which resulted in five amino acid substitutions. The frequencies of haplotypes A and B in the two goat breeds were 0.78–0.83 and 0.17–0.22, respectively. The SNP locus was in Hardy–Weinberg disequilibrium in the two goat breeds (P < 0.05). Polymorphisms of the GnRHR gene were shown to be associated with litter size in the two goat breeds. The SNPs in the goat GnRHR gene had significant effects on litter size (P < 0.05). Therefore, these results suggest that the GnRHR gene is a strong candidate gene that affects litter size in goat. 相似文献

The SEM was used to study the development of respiratory structures in successive stages in relation to the overall changes occurring in the scorpions. Book lung development is a slow process, starting with spiracles and a sac‐like atrium in the early embryo and continuing lamellar formation to 150 or more in the adult. In the embryo, the primordial epithelial cells become aligned in a planar pattern as they secrete granules of material that aggregate spontaneously to form the cuticular walls of the lamellae. A blade‐like structure is formed consisting of cells sandwiched within the two cuticle walls they secreted. These cells are in the primordial air channel. The adjacent hemolymph channel is nearly devoid of cells, but cross‐bridges develop and help stabilize the cuticle walls and maintain the width of the channel. The cells in the primordial air channel undergo cytolysis, leaving it open for air except for cuticular cross‐bridges. Development continues in the newborn (first instars); the air channels of some lamellae still contain cells and are not yet functional for gas exchange. The first instars are weak and relatively inactive. They climb up on the mother's dorsum until the first molt (about 8 days). With the cuticular walls of the lamellae in place, cells adhering to the wall in the hemolymph channel produce a thin, new tissue layer (epithelium) on the lamellar wall facing the hemolymph channel. This layer has many discontinuities as though it is slowly developing. Formation of the tissue layer and cytolysis of the cells in the air channels continue through the first molt in which little book lung cuticle is shed as exuvium. The air channels of the second instars (foraging nymphs) are now cell free and open for air passage except for the cross‐bridges. The tissue layer is still incomplete and continues to be formed. It may provide the hypodermal primordium for cuticle replacement in later molts, but development was not studied beyond the second instar except for comparison with book lungs in the adult. The blade‐like lamellae in the adult are larger and more numerous than in the second instar, but in the anterior book lung the shape of the cuticle wall and cross‐bridges and the widths of the air and hemolymph channels are about the same as in the second instar. The air channels in the posterior part of the lamellae have distinctive, vein‐like space‐holders. The similarity of the adult anterior lamellae with those in the second instar suggests retention of this part through the 4–5 molts to maturation, and/or cell processes like those in the embryo are repeated, but this needs to be examined in further studies of cell and cuticle changes before and during the molts. Invertebrate offspring are usually larger in colder environments. To test for possible effects of covariates (e.g. maternal phenotype and feeding conditions) on this pattern, we performed a laboratory experiment to look at the effect of temperature on newborn weight in the planktonic crustacean Daphnia magna. Three tempèratures (12°C, 16°C and 22°C) and two food levels (10,000 cells ml–1 and 150,000 cells ml–1) were used, and offspring were examined from the first five clutches of mothers that had been maintained under the constant experimental conditions for three generations. Preliminary analysis suggested that newborn weight was significantly affected by temperature although patterns in the data were not clear cut. In addition, the covariates mother weight and clutch size were positively and negatively correlated with newborn weight, respectively; and later clutches tended to contain heavier offspring. Therefore, in an effort to control for the effects of the covariates, repeated-measures analysis of covariance was performed using ratio values of newborn weight/mother weight (relative newborn weight) as the dependent variable, clutch size as the covariate and clutch number as the repeated measures term. Now, temperature as a main effect in an ANCOVA model did not significantly influence relative newborn weight. The repeatedmeasure term clutch number also became nonsignificant, indicating that when differences in mother weight due to age were accounted for there were no overall differences in relative newborn weight between clutches from a particular mother. Temperature effects on relative newborn weight were only significant as part of interaction terms with food concentration and with clutch number. Thus there were different weight responses to temperature within food levels, and between clutch numbers within food levels. Under the low-food conditions newborn were heaviest at 16°C, lightest at 12°C and intermediate at 22°C. Conversely, under the high-food condition newborn were lightest at 16°C, heaviest at 12°C and again intermediate at 22°C. However, newborn tended to be heavier under the low food condition, and food concentration was highly significant as a main effect. Mother growth rate showed no significant relationship with newborn weight. It is concluded that direct temperature effects on relative newborn weight are marginal and nonsignificant. Temperature effects through interactions with food concentration and clutch number are important determinants of newborn weight, but relatively speaking account for only a small proportion of observed variance in newborn weight (25%), compared with the direct effect of food concentration (67%). 相似文献

Populations of Daphnia galeata from the deep stratified moderately eutrophic reservoir and the shallow highly eutrophic carp ponds differed in the reproductive effort of the first laboratory generation cultivated at a rich algal diet. Varroa tolerance as a consequence of host immunity may contribute substantially to reduce worldwide colony declines. Therefore, special breeding programs were established and varroa surviving populations investigated to understand mechanisms behind this adaptation. The aim of this study was to investigate the reproductive capacity in the three most common subspecies of the European honey bee (Carnica, Mellifera, Ligustica) and the F2 generation of a varroa surviving population, to identify if managed host populations possibly have adapted over time already. Both, singly infested drone and worker brood were assessed to determine fertility and fecundity of varroa foundresses in their respective group. We found neither parameter to be significantly different within the four subspecies, demonstrating that no adaptations have occurred in terms of the reproductive success of Varroa destructor. In all groups mother mites reproduce equally successful and are potentially able to cause detrimental damage to their host when not being treated sufficiently. The data further suggests that a population once varroa tolerant does not necessarily inherit this trait to following generations after the F1, which could be of particular interest when selecting populations for resistance breeding. Experimental evaluation of the reliability of placental scar counts in American mink (Mustela vison)
Counting of placental scars in the uterus is a valuable method to estimate female fecundity in wild-ranging mammalian populations,
but the reliability of placental scar counts (PSC) has only been thoroughly assessed for a few species. Here we evaluate the
reliability of PSC in American mink (Mustela vison) through examination of farm animals with known reproductive history. PSC estimated pregnancy rate and litter size accurately
in individuals up to 3 months postpartum. Placental scars were detectable in most female American mink sampled 7–8 months
postpartum, but the proportion of minks misclassified as barren was overestimated, and mean litter size was underestimated.
We found a large variation in the intensity of pigmentation in placental scars with similar age. Differentiation of scars
according to shading as indicating either successful full-term pregnancies or post-implantation loss of embryos was not possible.
We propose that these results are applicable for fecundity analysis in American mink and closely related mustelids. 相似文献
