Plants from a sun and shade population were grown in two environments differing in the ratio of red to far-red light (R/FR ratio). A low R/FR ratio, simulating vegetation shade, promoted the formation of long, upright-growing leaves and allocation towards shoot growth, whereas a high R/FR ratio had the opposite effects. The increase in plant height under the low R/FR ratio was accompanied by a reduction in the number of leaves. Population differences in growth form resembled the differences between plants grown in different light environments: plants from the shade population had rosettes with long erect leaves, whereas plants from the sun population formed prostrate rosettes with short leaves. Plants from the shade population were more responsive to the R/FR ratio than plants from the sun population: the increases in leaf length, plant height, and leaf area ratio under a low R/FR ratio were larger in the shade population. However, differences in plasticity were small compared to the population difference in growth form itself. We argue that plants do not respond optimally to shading and that developmental constraints might have limited the evolution of an optimal response. We investigated the sublethal effects of a predatory crab, Cancer productus (Randall), on the behavior and growth of its snail prey, Littorina sitkana, by setting up controlled rearing and prey-size selection experiments. L. sitkana were collected from three sites on San Juan Island, WA, USA. These sites varied in snail size, abundance, and vertical distribution, and in the abundance of the crab predator C. productus. Snails from all three populations were raised for 34 days under the following treatments: no-crab control, a non-feeding C. productus encased in mesh box, and an encased C. productus feeding on L. sitkana. The non-feeding crab treatment did not affect snail foraging behavior or growth rate in comparison with the no-crab control. In contrast, the presence of a feeding crab elicited escape behavior in the snails, halted grazing, and consequently reduced growth rates. A population difference in escape behavior was observed: upward migration in snails from rocky shores and hiding in crevices in snails from a mud flat. It thus appears that chemicals leaching from crushed conspecific snails, rather than the presence of the crab predator, act as the “alarm substance” to which L. sitkana react. The magnitude of the growth depression in the presence of feeding crabs was 85%, with no difference among the three populations. Once the feeding crab stimulus was removed, snails in all populations resumed normal growth, suggesting that this response to feeding predators is reversible with changing environmental conditions. Laboratory experiments were set up to determine if all size classes of L. sitkana are equally susceptible to C. productus predation. C. productus consistently selected the largest of three size classes of L. sitkana. These results suggest that slow growth rate and small size in L. sitkana may actually be an adaptation for coexisting with high C. productus abundance, rather than simply a cost of escape behavior.  相似文献

Although diel dissolved oxygen curves in aquatic ecosystems usually have a unimodal shape, occasionally bimodal curves are observed. Examples of bimodal curves are found throughout literature for various types of aquatic systems; nevertheless, the phenomenon has been generally ignored. In the present study diel changes in dissolved oxygen, temperature, and irradiation were continuously monitored over a 2 year period in an artificial pond. Through analysis of variance an attempt was made to isolate the physical circumstances under which bimodal oxygen curves can be expected. It is suggested that a persistent high irradiation level and/or its accessory high rate of temperature increase and/or a usually simultaneous high rate of primary production may induce bimodal oxygen curves. However, a conclusive explanation could not be given.

Summary Wire cages with different-sized meshes were placed on trunks and around leaves at different heights in oak trees and in forest litter. Gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, instars II–V tethered with threads were placed in each cage (instars II–III only in leaf cages) as well as outside the cages. Predation of larvae decreased from near ground to mid-crown in trees and was highest in litter and very low on leaves. Predation in litter was not strongly related to cage type, suggesting that small, invertebrate predators were active there, but IV–V instars on trunks were mainly killed by relatively large predators, probably forest mice and shrews. Influences of the time of day and weather on predation were evaluated by observing tethered V–VI instars in litter and on tree trunks hourly. Ants, particularly carpenter ants (Camponotus ferrugineus) and Formica sp., and probably vertebrates, were conspicuous predators in the litter. Ants were most active at lower relative humidities, while other predators were apparently not influenced by humidity. No daily activity rhythms of predation were noted. Invertebrates appear to be important predators of larvae only in the litter whereas vertebrates, such as forest mice and shrews, also readily attack larvae on tree trunks.  相似文献

The development of molecular probe technologies over the last several decades has enabled more rapid and specific identification and enumeration of phytoplankton species compared to traditional technologies, such as light microscopy. Direct comparisons of these methods with respect to physiological status, however, are sparse. Here we directly compare quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and sandwich hybridization assay (SHA) for enumerating the raphidophyte Heterosigma akashiwo at several points during its growth phase, over a diel cycle and with macronutrient stress in laboratory cultures. To ensure consistency between comparisons, a single cellular homogenate was generated from each culture and split for analysis by qPCR and SHA. Since the homogenate was generated from the same number of cells during each experiment, results reflect changes in nucleic acid content (rRNA and DNA) at each time point or in response to environmental conditions relative to a reference sample. Results show a greater level of precision in SHA results which contributed to significant (2–3 fold) differences in rRNA content per cell in several of these analyses. There was significantly greater rRNA content during lag and exponential phases compared to stationary phase cultures, and a significant decrease in rRNA content during the light cycle compared to cells harvested in the dark. In contrast, there were no significant differences in DNA content per cell as determined by qPCR over a diel cycle or during different growth phases. There was also no decrease in either rRNA or DNA content for cultures under low P conditions compared to nutrient replete conditions. However, both rRNA and DNA content were significantly lower under N stress when compared to nutrient replete conditions. Results of this study suggest that growth stage, nutrient stress and cell cycle may impact molecular analyses, and that physiological status should be taken into account when using these methods for HAB monitoring.  相似文献

Effects of clonal integration on plant plasticity in Fragaria chiloensis   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
Peter Alpert 《Plant Ecology》1999,141(1-2):99-106
The ability of clonal plants to transport substances between ramets located in different microsites also allows them to modify the plastic responses of individual ramets to local environmental conditions. By equalising concentrations of substances between ramets, physiological integration might decrease responses to local conditions. However, integration has also been observed to increase plasticity and induce novel plastic responses in ramets. To ask how integration modifies plant plasticity in the clonal herb, Fragaria chiloensis, ramets were given either low light and high nitrogen or high light and low nitrogen, simulating a pattern of resource patchiness in their native habitat. Ramets in contrasting light/nitrogen treatments were either connected or single. Effects of light/nitrogen and connection were measured at three levels of morphological organisation, the organ, the ramet, and the clonal fragment. Connection between ramets reduced or had no effect on plastic responses in leaf size at the level of the plant organ. This suggested that integration dampened certain plastic responses. Connection induced a new plastic response at the level of the clonal fragment, an increase in allocation to vegetative reproduction in patches of low light and high nitrogen. It is concluded that clonal integration can have different effects on plant plasticity at different levels of plant organisation. It appears that, at least in this species, integration can increase plasticity at the level of the clonal fragment and concentrate vegetative reproduction in particular microsite types.  相似文献

Synopsis During their seaward migration, juvenile salmonids encounter structural and visual cover which varies between and within watersheds. In this study, the effects of two types of cover (turbidity and artificial vegetation) on the predation mortality of juvenile salmonids exposed to fish piscivores was investigated in outdoor concrete ponds. During experiments, adult coastal cutthroat trout, Oncorhynchus clarkii clarkii, were allowed to feed on juvenile salmonid prey — chinook salmon, O. tshawytscha, chum salmon, O. keta, sockeye salmon, O. nerka, and cutthroat trout — in separate trials. Daily instantaneous per capita predation rate was determined for each turbidity and vegetation treatment, within each trial. Mean predation rates varied between 1% and 76% daily. In the presence of cover, mean daily predation rates were 10–75% lower than those in controls (no vegetation and clear water), depending on prey species. Predation rates were significantly lower in the presence of vegetation cover and did not covary with prey size or species. The effects of turbidity were generally not significant and were not additive with the effects of vegetation. However, turbidity appeared to significantly reduce the effectiveness of vegetation as cover for juvenile chinook and sockeye salmon. We suggest that these two forms of cover do not affect risk of predation by fish piscivores to juvenile salmonids via the same mechanism.  相似文献

We studied the effects of genotypic and plastic variation in vertical and horizontal spacer lengths on plant performance in a stoloniferous herb subjected to opposing selection regimes. We hypothesized that longer vertical structures are beneficial if plants are subjected to competition, but they should negatively affect plant performance if plants are exposed to aboveground disturbance. To test these hypotheses we subjected 34 genotypes of Trifolium repens to competition and disturbance treatments. Competition was imposed by a grass canopy consisting of Lolium perenne, and disturbance was simulated by regularly clipping the target plants and all the surrounding vegetation at 1 cm above soil level. Conform to our hypothesis, genotypes with longer vertical structures (petioles) produced fewer ramets than genotypes with shorter petioles in the disturbance treatment. However, genotypes with longer petioles did not perform better under competition than genotypes with shorter petioles. Genotypes with highly plastic vertical structures tended to produce more shoot mass under competition, and they produced fewer ramets if subjected to disturbance. Unexpectedly, horizontal structures (stolon internodes) expanded in response to competition which, furthermore, was associated with enhanced plant performance. However, producing longer internodes is inherently associated with costs in terms of increased resource allocation to the longer structures, but not to benefits in terms of increased resource capture. Positive correlations among the length and plasticity of vertical and horizontal structures may explain the apparent positive effect of producing longer internodes on plant performance. Our data thus support the notion that trait correlations may weaken selective forces acting on a focal trait in a specific environment if opposing selection pressures act on genetically correlated traits.  相似文献

Phaeodactylum tricomutum Bohlin (strain TFX-1) was grown under light-, nitrogen-, and phosphorus-limited conditions in continuous or semicontinuous cultures under a 12L-12D light regime. The C, N, and P contents were determined at each steady state, as was the partitioning of cellular organic carbon into protein, lipids, polysaccharides, and metabolic intermediates. All determinations were made at the beginning and again at the end of the light period. The rates of nutrient assimilation and of synthesis of biochemical constituents during the light and dark periods were calculated from the above data, and the periodicities of these processes characterized. The elemental composition of the cells was different under each limitation. In particular, phosphorus limitation severely restricted the ability of the cell to store nitrogen in non-protein forms. Biochemical composition and the diel periodicity of cellular processes also differed between limitations. Nutrient uptake was most strongly periodic under light limitation. Protein synthesis showed increased periodicity under nitrogen limitation, relative to the other limitations, while the periodicity of lipid synthesis was reduced under phosphate limitation. Polysaccharide was synthesized at high rates during the light period and consumed in the dark under all limitations.  相似文献

In nature, seasons may be more reliably announced by changes in photoperiod than in temperature. To evaluate the role of day length in setting oxidative capacities of trout muscle mitochondria, we acclimated trout to summer (15 °C, 16L:8D), winter (5 °C, 8L:16D) and mixed conditions (15 °C, 8L:16D). Maximal oxidative capacities of isolated mitochondria at 5 and 15 °C were higher in mixed than summer conditions and higher again in winter conditions. At 5 °C, state 4 rates changed little with acclimation state whereas at 15 °C state 4 rates were lower in summer than in mixed or winter conditions. Using concentrations of the adenylate nucleotide translocase as the denominator for these rates gave much the same conclusions. By using inhibitors to block flux at specific points in the electron transport chain, we found that flux through Complexes II–IV was lowest in summer acclimated trout, increased upon acclimation to mixed and to winter conditions. Flux through complex IV was similar in trout acclimated to summer and mixed conditions, but increased significantly with acclimation to winter conditions. Flux through complex IV was 1.5 fold higher than state 3 rates for summer-acclimated trout but was similar to state 3 rates in trout acclimated to mixed or winter conditions. Our results indicate that a reduction in day length initiates increases in mitochondrial oxidative capacity typically associated with cold acclimation and that acclimation to both cold temperatures and short day lengths enhanced these changes. The overall similarity of the responses of state 3, of flux through complexes II–IV and of flux through complex IV suggests that a generalised mechanism such as changes in the phospholipid composition of the inner mitochondrial membrane may coordinate these changes.  相似文献

Many animals are active only during a particular time (e.g., day vs. night), a partitioning that may have important consequences for species coexistence. An open question is the extent to which this diel activity niche is evolutionarily conserved or labile. Here, we analyze diel activity data across a phylogeny of 1914 tetrapod species. We find strong phylogenetic signal, showing that closely related species tend to share similar activity patterns. Ancestral reconstructions show that nocturnality was the most likely ancestral diel activity pattern for tetrapods and many major clades within it (e.g., amphibians, mammals). Remarkably, nocturnal activity appears to have been maintained continuously in some lineages for ~350 million years. Thus, we show that traits involved in local‐scale resource partitioning can be conserved over strikingly deep evolutionary time scales. We also demonstrate a potentially important (but often overlooked) metric of niche conservatism. Finally, we show that diurnal lineages appear to have faster speciation and diversification rates than nocturnal lineages, which may explain why there are presently more diurnal tetrapod species even though diurnality appears to have evolved more recently. Overall, our results may have implications for studies of community ecology, species richness, and the evolution of diet and communication systems.  相似文献

Synopsis The downstream transport of fish larvae is well known from temperate running waters, but there exists remarkably little information for tropical streams. We sampled drift in two Andean piedmont streams during the dry seasons of 1986–1988. Bryconamericus deuterodonoides (Characidae) larvae were found to be extremely abundant in some drift collections, with peak drift densities exceeding those of temperate streams by as much as an order of magnitude. Drift of fish larvae displayed pronounced diel periodicity, with more than one-quarter of a million larvae collected during the night compared to two individuals during the day. Fish larvae were more abundant during the latter compared to early part of the dry season, even in years when streams were reduced to small isolated pools by the end of the season. These observations indicate that the dry season represents an important period of reproduction for the characid, Bryconamericus deuterodonoides, and possibly other neotropical fish species.  相似文献

Synopsis Widespread male body size variation in P. latipinna appears to be attributable to genetic variation in the size at maturation. The contribution of adult growth needs to be assessed because adult growth rates may vary with size at maturation and local environment. In our laboratory study we examined adult growth patterns as a function of size at maturation and juvenile experience (favorable or unfavorable conditions). In our field study we assessed adult growth as a function of initial size and environmental condition (using males in enclosures in contrasting habitats). Adult growth rates in the laboratory were an order of magnitude higher than rates observed in field enclosures. Growth rates varied with male size, increasing with increasing male size in the laboratory study but decreasing with increasing male size in the field study. The laboratory results alone would have cast considerable doubt on the ability to interpret size distributions of field-collected males, but the field results indicate that adult growth is sufficiently low that it can be ignored as a source of body size variation within and among populations.  相似文献
