A lab-scale investigation was conducted to examine the effectiveness of a multi-fed upflow anaerobic filter process for the methane production from a rice winery effluent at ambient temperatures. The experiment was carried in two identical 3.0-l upflow filters, a single-fed reactor and a multi-fed reactor. The results showed that the multi-fed reactor, operated at the ambient temperatures of 19–27 °C and influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 8.34–25.76 g/l, could remove over 82% of COD even at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 37.68 g-COD/l d and a short hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8 h. This reactor produced biogas with a methane yield of 0.30–0.35 l-CH4/g-CODremoved. The multi-fed upflow anaerobic filter was proved to be more efficient than the single-fed reactor in terms of COD removal efficiency and stability against hydraulic loading shocks. A linear-regression model with influent COD concentration and HRT terms adequately described the multi-fed upflow anaerobic filter system for the treatment of rice winery wastewater at ambient temperatures.  相似文献

The high organic content of Olive Mill Wastewaters (OMW) causes some difficulties in maintaining the anaerobic process efficiency at high level. The two phase anaerobic system was used to treat olive mill wastewaters, diluted with tap water. Phase separation was accomplished through control of the hydraulic retention time and initial COD removal in two reactors operated in series. The effect of substrate concentration and phase separation on removal efficiency has been investigated. Experimental results indicated that yield of 0.322 to 0.335 litre biogas/g COD removal were obtained with two phase anaerobic treatment and space loading rate of 2.3 and 2.4 gCOD/l.day. The maximum methane production rate near to the theoretical value and corresponded to 360 ml of CH4 for 1g COD removal.Abbreviations OMW Olive Mill Wastewaters - VFA Volatile Fatty Acid - COD Chemical Oxygen Demand - HRT High Retention Time - TKN Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen  相似文献

Palm oil mill effluent (POME) with average chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of 70,000 and 30,000 mg/L, respectively, can cause serious environmental hazards if discharged untreated. There are conventional palm oil mill effluent (POME) treatment systems that require large footprint, long HRT and fail to meet the Malaysian Department of Environment (DOE) discharge limit. Hence, the current research is aimed to design a novel integrated anaerobic–aerobic bioreactor (IAAB) for POME treatment in order to overcome these shortcomings of the conventional system. IAAB is a new bioreactor configuration which integrates anaerobic and aerobic digestion in one reactor. The overall removal efficiencies in steady state condition in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS) were more than 99% at the organic loading rate (OLR) of 10.5 g COD/L day with methane yield of 0.24 L CH4/g COD removed. The effluent quality remained stable (BOD < 70 mg/L) and complied with the discharge limit (BOD < 100 mg/L). Overall, the IAAB system exhibited good stability and pH adjustment was unnecessary. The results show that the IAAB achieves higher performance in terms of organic removal efficiency and methane yield at higher OLR and shorter HRT as compared to the conventional system. Further evaluations of its long-term performance are proposed for the subsequent study.  相似文献

Summary An anaerobic hybrid reactor was used in the anaerobic treatment of an acidic petrochemical effluent. An organic loading rate of 20.04 kg COD/(m3d) at a HRT of 17 hours was obtained with a volatile fatty acid removal of 91%, and COD removal of 84%. A final reactor effluent containing 44 mg/l ammonia nitrogen and 12.3 mg/l PO4-P was produced.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion of cheese whey wastewaters (CW) was investigated in a system consisting of an ecological pretreatment followed by upflow anaerobic filter (UAF). The pretreatment was conducted to solve the inhibition problems during anaerobic treatment of CW caused by the amounts of fats, proteins and carbohydrates and to avoid the major problems of clogging in the reactor. The optimized ecological pretreatment of diluted CW induce removal yields of 50% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 60% of total suspended solids (TSS) after acidification by Lactobacillus paracasei at 32 degrees C during 20 h and neutralization with lime. The pretreated CW was used to feed UAF (35 degrees C). The effects of organic loading rate (OLR) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the pretreated CW anaerobic degradation were examined. The average total COD removals achieved was 80-90%. The performance of the reactor was depressed by increasing the COD concentration to 20 g/l (OLR = 4 gCOD/ld) and the COD removal efficiency was reduced to 72%. Significant methane yield (280 l/kg COD removal) was obtained at an HRT of 2 days.  相似文献

The C:N ratio of the pharmaceutical wastewaters is usually suitable for a combination of the anaerobic pretreatment with the high COD removal and aerobic posttreatment with the efficient biological N removal. This kind of anaerobic-aerobic process was tested in semipilot scale by using a UASB reactor and an activated sludge system with a predenitrification (total volume 100 1). It was found that at a total HRT of 2.3 days an average of 97.5% of COD and 73.5% of total N was removed. The UASB reactor was operated at 30°C with a volumetric loading rate of 8.7 kg.m-3.d-1, the efficiency of COD removal was 92.2%. The processes, which take part in the biological removal of nitrogen, especially the nitrification, were running with lower rates than usually observed in aerobic treatment systems.Abbreviations AAO anaerobic anoxic oxic configuration - AOO anaerobic oxic oxic configuration - B V volumetric organic loading rate (kg COD.m-3. d-1) - dB x specific COD removal rate (mg COD. g-1 VSS. d-1) - DNR denitrification rate (mg N–NO3. g-1 VSS. h-1) - ECOD efficiency of COD removal (%) - HRT hydraulic retention time (d) - NR nitrification rate (mg N–NO3. g-1 VSS. h-1) - R recirculation ratio (%) - SBP specific biogas production (m3.kg-1 removed COD) - SRT solids retention time; sludge age (d) - SS suspended solids (g.1-1) - UASB upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor - VSS volatile suspended solids (g.1-1)  相似文献

In this study, the performance of the anoxic filter bed and biological wriggle bed-ozone biological aerated filter (AFB-BWB-O3-BAF) process treating real textile dyeing wastewater was investigated. After more than 2 month process operation, the average effluent COD concentration of the AFB, BWB, O3-BAF were 704.8 mg/L, 294.6 mg/L and 128.8 mg/L, with HRT being 8.1-7.7 h, 9.2 h and 5.45 h, respectively. Results showed that the effluent COD concentration of the AFB decreased with new carriers added and the average removal COD efficiency was 20.2%. During operation conditions, HRT of the BWB and O3-BAF was increased, resulting in a decrease in the effluent COD concentration. However, on increasing the HRT, the COD reduction capability expressed by the unit carrier COD removal loading of the BWB reactor increased, while that of the O3-BAF reactor decreased. This study is a beneficial attempt to utilize the AFB-BWB-O3-BAF combine process for textile wastewater treatment.  相似文献

In order to maximize the efficiency of methane fermentation on short-chain fatty acids, growth media containing acetic acid and butyric acid as major carbon sources were supplied to a thermophilic down-flow anaerobic packed-bed reactor. The organic loading rate (OLR) to the reactor ranged from 0.2 to 169 kg-dichromate chemical oxygen demand(CODcr)/m3-reactor/day, corresponding to a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of between 1.4 h and 20 days. Stable methane production was maintained at HRTs as short as 2 h (OLR=120 kg-CODcr/m3/day), with the short-chain fatty acids in the feed almost completely removed during the process. The apparent substrate removal efficiency, determined from the total CODcr values in the influent and effluent, was 75% at short HRTs. However, the actual substrate removal efficiency must have been greater than 75%, since a fraction of substrate was also utilized in microbial cell synthesis, and these cells were part of the measured total CODcr.  相似文献

Integrated biological process for olive mill wastewater treatment   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The biological process for OMW treatment is based on an aerobic detoxification step followed by methanization step and aerobic post-treatment.The first aerobic detoxification step of OMW supplemented with sulfate and ammonium was carried out by the growth of Aspergillus niger in a bubble column. This step decreased OMW toxicity and increased its biodegradability because of phenolic compounds degradation. Growth of A. niger resulted in 58% COD removal, with production of biomass containing 30% proteins (w/w). Filtration of OMW was enhanced by this fermentation because the suspended solids were trapped in the mycelium. The filtrate liquid was then methanized using an anaerobic filter packed with flocoor. This reactor showed a short start up and a good stability. COD removal was around 60% and the methane yield (1 CH4/g COD removed) was close to the theoretical yield. The anaerobic filter effluent was treated in an activated sludge fluidized reactor containing olive husk as a packing material. Husks were maintained in fluidization state by the aeration. This step induces COD removal at 45% and sludge (up to 2 g/dm3).The entire process allowed a global COD reduction up to 90%; however, the black colour due to polyphenolic compounds with high molecular weight persisted.  相似文献

This study was focused on several physico-chemical and biological treatment methods that may affect the reduction of the organic load in olive mill wastewater (OMW). In this study, removal of 95% of the phenolic compounds present in OMW was achieved using sand filtration and subsequent treatment with powdered activated carbon in a batch system. This pretreatment for OMW was found to enhance the anaerobic activity of the sludge in the batch system significantly. The efficiency of organic load removal achieved by the anaerobic treatment of untreated OMW in batch reactors with tap water dilution factors below 1:10, reached approximately 65% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. However, in the up-flow sludge anaerobic blanket (UASB) reactor, COD removal efficiency of 80–85% was reached at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 5 days with an influent COD concentration of 40 g l−1 and organic loading rate (OLR)=8 g−1 COD l−1 per day.  相似文献

Background

A modified laboratory-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was used to obtain methane by treating hydrous ethanol vinasse. Vinasses or stillage are waste materials with high organic loads, and a complex composition resulting from the process of alcohol distillation. They must initially be treated with anaerobic processes due to their high organic loads. Vinasses can be considered multipurpose waste for energy recovery and once treated they can be used in agriculture without the risk of polluting soil, underground water or crops. In this sense, treatment of vinasse combines the elimination of organic waste with the formation of methane. Biogas is considered as a promising renewable energy source. The aim of this study was to determine the optimum organic loading rate for operating a modified UASB reactor to treat vinasse generated in the production of hydrous ethanol from sugar cane molasses.

Results

The study showed that chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was 69% at an optimum organic loading rate (OLR) of 17.05 kg COD/m3-day, achieving a methane yield of 0.263 m3/kg CODadded and a biogas methane content of 84%. During this stage, effluent characterization presented lower values than the vinasse, except for potassium, sulfide and ammonia nitrogen. On the other hand, primers used to amplify the 16S-rDNA genes for the domains Archaea and Bacteria showed the presence of microorganisms which favor methane production at the optimum organic loading rate.

Conclusions

The modified UASB reactor proposed in this study provided a successful treatment of the vinasse obtained from hydrous ethanol production.Methanogen groups (Methanobacteriales and Methanosarcinales) detected by PCR during operational optimum OLR of the modified UASB reactor, favored methane production.

In order to investigate the influence of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on organic pollutant removal in a submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR), a laboratory-scale experiment was conducted using domestic sewage as influent. The dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration was controlled at 2.0– during the experimental period. The experiments demonstrated that when HRT was 3, 2 and 1 h, the reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) was 89.3–97.2, 88.5–97.3 and 80–91.1%, and the effluent COD was 38.9–11.2, 41.6–10.8 and 63.4–, respectively. It is suggested that an HRT of 1 h could meet the normal standard of discharged domestic sewage, and an HRT of 2 h could meet that of water reclamation. In addition, we use mathematical software MATLAB to analyse the relation of mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) and COD removal. The results showed that the optimum MLSS concentration should be maintained at around in the SMBR. The results also showed that the COD removal was related to HRT (τ), influent concentration (S0) and sludge loading rate for COD removal (NS). Moreover, the high COD removal could be achieved through adjusting τ, S0 and NS.  相似文献

An algal-bacterial microcosm was synthetically constructed of Chlorella vulgaris MMl and Pseudomonas MTl. This microcosm was able to treat simulated wastewater supplemented with mixtures of phenol and pyridine up to 4.6 and 4.4 mM, respectively, in a continuous stirred tank bioreactor (CSTR) using photosynthetic oxygenation. Complete pollutant removal and detoxification and 82 % removal of introduced chemical oxygen demand (COD) were achieved at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 2.7 days. Increasing the influent load to 5.3 and 6.3 mM reduced the removal of phenol, pyridine and COD to 78, 21 and 59 %, respectively. Fertilization of the photobioreactor with 24 mM NaHCO3 restored the treatment and detoxification efficiencies. The system was able to additionally mitigate up to 72 mM NaHCO3 at the same HRT. Although the fertilization increased the system treatment efficiency, the settleability of the algal-bacterial microcosm was significantly reduced. When the photobioreactor was operated at HRT of 2.7 days in a 12/12 h of dark/light cycle, complete removal of 4.7 mM phenol was recorded but only 11 % of 5.7 mM pyridine was removed. The COD removal efficiency and CO2 mitigation were also reduced to 65 and 86 %, respectively, and the effluent retained significant toxicity where 73 % inhibition was recorded. Elongation of the illumination time to 48 h (HRT of 4 days at 12/12 h dark/light cycle) restored the treatment and detoxification efficiencies.  相似文献

A study of the anaerobic digestion of wastewater derived from the production of protein isolates from chickpea flour was carried out in a laboratory-scale, mesophilic (35 °C) fluidised-bed reactor with saponite as bacterial support. Soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) removal efficiencies in the range of 96.8–85.2% were achieved in the reactor at organic loading rates (OLR) of between 0.58 and 2.10 g chemical oxygen demand (COD)/l per day, hydraulic retention times (HRT) of between 14.9 and 4.5 days and average feed COD concentration of 9.1 g/l. Eighty-five percent of feed COD could be removed up to OLR of 2.1 g COD/l per day. The yield coefficient of methane production was 0.34 l of methane (at STP) per gram COD removed and was virtually independent of the OLR applied. Because the buffering capacity of the experimental system was maintained at favourable levels with excess total alkalinity present at all loadings, the rate of methanogenesis was not affected by loading. Experimental data indicated that a total alkalinity in the range of 1090–2130 mg/l as CaCO3 was sufficient to prevent the pH from decreasing to below 7.2 for OLR of up to 2.7 g COD/l per day. The volatile fatty acid (VFA) levels and the VFA/alkalinity ratio were lower than the suggested limits for digester failure (0.3–0.4) for OLR and HRT up to 2.7 g COD/l per day and 3.5 days, respectively. For a HRT of 2.8 days (OLR of 3.00 g COD/l per day) the start of acidification was observed in the reactor.  相似文献

This paper describes the thermophilic anaerobic biodegradation of wine distillery wastewater (vinasses) in a laboratory fluidised bed reactor (AFB) with a porous support medium. The experimental protocol was defined to examine the effect of increasing organic loading rate on the efficiency of AFB and to report on its steady-state performance. Moreover, in order to evaluate treatment efficiency and to investigate fermentation kinetics in an AFB reactor, experimental data were used to estimate the ‘active biomass’ concentration using an autocatalytic kinetic model proposed in this paper, since viable biomass in AFB reactors is very difficult to measure experimentally. The AFB reactor was subjected to a program of steady-state operation over a range of hydraulic retention time (HRTs) of 2.5–0.37 days and organic loading rate (OLRs) up to 5.88 kgCOD/m3/day in order to evaluate its treatment capacity. The AFB reactor was initially operated with organic loading rate of 5.88 kgCOD/m3/day and HRT of 2.5 days. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was found to be 96.5% in the reactor while the methane content of biogas produced in the digester reached 1.08 m3/m3digester/day. Over 94 days operating period, an OLR of 32 kgCOD/m3/day at a food-to-micro-organisms (F:M) ratio of 0.55 kgCOD/kgVSatt/day was achieved with 81.5% COD removal efficiency in the experimental AFB reactor. At this moment, the methane content of biogas produced in the digester reached 9.0 m3/m3digester/day. The proposed kinetic model is able to estimate kinetic constants of the biodegradation process: non-biodegradable substrate (Snb) and active adhered biomass concentration (Xa). The parameters of the model were obtained by the curve-fitting method to the proposed kinetic model using the COD as substrate of the anaerobic process and assuming a maximum specific μmax: 0.72 per day. The comparison of the measured concentration of volatile attached solids (VSatt) with the estimated ‘active’ biomass concentration indicated that extremely high ‘active biomass’ concentrations can be maintained in the system because biofilm thickness is limited by the liquid flow rate applied. This is due to the fact that the anaerobic fluidised bed system retains the growth support medium in suspension by drag forces exerted by upflowing wastewater, and the distribution of biomass holdup (in the form of a biofilm) is thus relatively uniform.  相似文献

Ozonation pretreatment was applied to palm oil mill effluent (POME) prior to anaerobic digestion using the anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR). Ozonation increased BOD/COD by 37.9% with a COD loss of only 3.3%. At organic loads of 6.48-12.96 kg COD/m3/d, feeding with non-ozonated POME caused a system failure. The ozonated POME gave significantly higher TCOD removal at loadings 6.52 and 9.04 kg COD/m3/d but failed to sustain the operation at loading 11.67 kg COD/m3/d. Effects of cycle time (CT) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) were determined using quadratic regression model. The generated response surface and contour plot showed that at this high load conditions (6.52-11.67 kg COD/m3/d), longer HRT and shorter CT gave the ASBR higher organic removal efficiency and methane yield. The model was able to satisfactorily describe the relationship of these two key operating parameters.  相似文献

This paper describes the thermophilic (55 °C) anaerobic biodegradation of a mixed feed composed of vinasses and cutting oil wastewater (COW) in a laboratory upflow anaerobic fixed-film reactor (UAFF) with a porous support medium. The experimental protocol was defined to examine the effect of increasing the percentage of cutting oil wastewater in the feed. The UAFF reactor was initially started-up with vinasses as the only carbon source at an organic loading rate of 22.3 kg COD/m3 day and HRT of 0.8 days using porous particles as the support (SIRAN). The percentage of organic matter composed of vinasses was subsequently reduced while increasing the amount of cutting oil until 100% of cutting oil wastewater was added in the feed. Four stages were considered in the study (0, 42.4, 66.6 and 100% COW). HRT was adjusted in order to maintain an approximately constant organic loading rate applied to the system. Under theses conditions, the UAFF reactor was subjected to a programme of steady-state operation with hydraulic retention times (HRT) in the range 0.8–0.15 days and organic loading rates (OLR) between 22.3 and 14.9 kg COD/m3 day in order to evaluate the treatment capacity of the system. The COD removal efficiency was found to be 87% COD and 94.6% TOC in the reactor when treating vinasses at 22.3 kg COD/m3 day. The volumetric methane level produced in the digester reached 0.45 m3/m3 day. After an operating period of 120 days, the reactor was fed with cutting oil wastewater (COW) as the only source of carbon. An OLR of 16.7 kg COD/m3 day was achieved with 85.8% COD removal efficiency (58.1%TOC) in the experimental UAFF reactor. Under these conditions the volumetric methane produced in the digester was negligible.Hence, COW can be removed, if not degraded, by anaerobic treatment in the presence of a biodegradable co-substrate. Wine vinasses degradation creates conditions for non-biological removal of COW constituents. More studies are necessary in order to test the mechanisms of organic removal when biodegradation apparently had ceased. Also, toxicity assays of COW are necessary to evaluate the toxicity to the methanogenic community.  相似文献

A study of the anaerobic digestion of wastewater derived from the production of protein isolates from extracted sunflower flour was carried out in a laboratory-scale, mesophilic (35 degrees C) fluidized-bed reactor with saponite as bacterial support. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies in the range of 98.3-80.0% were achieved in the reactor at organic loading rates (OLR) of between 0.6 and 9.3 g COD/I d, hydraulic retention times (HRT) of between 20.0 and 1.1 d and average feed COD concentration of 10.6 g/l. Eighty percent of feed COD could be removed up to OLR of 9.3 g COD/l d. The yield coefficient of methane production was 0.33 l of methane (at STP) per gram of COD removed and was virtually independent of the OLR applied. Because the buffering capacity of the experimental system was maintained at favorable levels with excess total alkalinity present at all loadings, the rate of methanogenesis was not affected by loading. The experimental data indicated that a total alkalinity in the range of 2,000-2,460 mg/l as CaCO3 was sufficient to prevent the pH from dropping to below 7.0 for OLR of up to 9.3 g COD/l d. The volatile fatty acid (VFA) levels and the VFA/alkalinity ratio were lower than the suggested limits for digester failure (0.3-0.4) for OLR and HRT up to 9.3 g COD/l d and 1.1 d, respectively. For a HRT of 0.87 d (OLR of 12.1 g COD/l d) the start of acidification was observed in the reactor.  相似文献

In this study, a three-stage-integrated process using the hydrogenic process (BioH2), methanogenic process (BioCH4), and a microbial fuel cell (MFC) was operated using molasses wastewater. The contribution of individual processes to chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and energy production was evaluated. The three-stage integration system was operated at molasses of 20 g-COD L?1, and each process achieved hydrogen production rate of 1.1 ± 0.24 L-H2 L?1 day?1, methane production rate of 311 ± 18.94 mL-CH4 L?1 day?1, and production rate per electrode surface area of 10.8 ± 1.4 g m?2 day?1. The three-stage integration system generated energy production of 32.32 kJ g-COD?1 and achieved COD removal of 98 %. The contribution of BioH2, BioCH4, and the MFC reactor was 20.8, 72.2, and, 7.0 % of the total COD removal, and 18.7, 81.2, and 0.16 % of the total energy production, respectively. The continuous stirred-tank reactor BioH2 at HRT of 1 day, up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket BioCH4 at HRT of 2 days, and MFC reactor at HRT of 3 days were decided in 1:2:3 ratios of working volume under hydraulic retention time consideration. This integration system can be applied to various configurations depending on target wastewater inputs, and it is expected to enhance energy recovery and reduce environmental impact of the final effluent.  相似文献

The effects of increasing nitrobenzene (NB) concentrations and hydraulic retention times (HRT) on the treatment of NB were investigated in a sequential anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR)/aerobic completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR) system. In the first step of the study, the maximum COD removal efficiencies were found as 88% and 92% at NB concentrations varying between 30 mg L?1 and 210 mg L?1 in ABR. The minimum COD removal efficiency was 79% at a NB concentration of 700 mg L?1. The removal efficiency of NB was nearly 100% for all NB concentrations in the ABR reactor. The methane gas production and the methane gas percentage remained stable (1500 mL day?1 and 48–50%, respectively) as the NB concentration was increased from 30 to 210 mg L?1. In the second step of the study it was found that as the HRT decreased from 10.38 days to 2.5 days the COD removal efficiencies decreased slightly from 94% to 92% in the ABR. For maximum COD and NB removal efficiencies the optimum HRT was found as 2.5 days in the ABR. The total COD removal efficiency was 95% in sequential anaerobic (ABR)/aerobic (CSTR) reactor system at a minimum HRT of 1 day. When the HRT was decreased from 10.38 days to 1 day, the methane percentage decreased from 42% to 29% in an ABR reactor treating 100 mg L?1 NB. Nitrobenzene was reduced to aniline under anaerobic conditions while aniline was mineralized to catechol with meta cleavage under aerobic conditions.  相似文献
